How To Access SkyDrive From Your iPhone

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/drive_blue_disk.png" alt="access skydrive from iphone" />While the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quickly-safely-share-photos-files-msn-messenger/">whole href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/review-windows-live-mail-2011/">line of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-live-essentials-customize/">Windows Live products seems to have received a growing href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-microsoft-products-2/">positive response, even more so with the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-cool-windows-7-cloud/">revamp in looks and features, Windows Live services still seem a bit under hyped. One such service, Windows Live SkyDrive, is (according to this author) highly underrated.

SkyDrive offers about 5 times more free storage than other popular href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-live-skydrive-3-alternative-storage-services/">online storage services (e.g. Dropbox and Box), and allows for easy href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-photos-free-25gb-windows-live-skydrive/">photo album and file sharing. Perhaps the best part yet is that you can create and edit documents on the cloud with Office Web Apps, and even href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/map-online-services-as-a-network-drive-with-gladinet-windows/">upload Office documents to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/upload-sync-files-skydrive-windows-explorer/">SkyDrive from Windows Explorer via WebDAV.

SkyDrive doesn’t just serve as an online storage and sharing site. If you own a smartphone or Wi-fi enabled device, you could skip transferring files via USB cable and retrieve them from SkyDrive. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t released as of yet, official SkyDrive apps for either Android or iOS. There are, however, unofficial apps, such as the free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/sorami-access-skydrive-from-android-phone/">Sorami for Android (which I’ve tried and works well) and the $4.99 iSMEStorage for iOS [ href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ismestorage/id359916522?mt=8">iTunes link].

Here we’ll take a look at the mobile site that serves up Windows Live SkyDrive on Safari and any other browser on the iPhone.

Navigating The Mobile Windows Live Site

On your mobile browser, type live.com in the URL bar and hit Go. The site seems mostly optimized for the Hotmail service, so you’ll be directed to your Hotmail inbox at first. Tap the Menu option on the top right of the screen so you can see links for SkyDrive, among other Windows Live services. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0073.png" alt="access skydrive from iphone" width="320" height="480" border="0" /> /> Once you tap on SkyDrive, you’ll see all of your content, sorted by folders. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0066.png" alt="skydrive iphone app" width="320" height="480" border="0" /> /> If you tap on any folders, you’ll be directed to a thumbnail view of that folder, much like you would expect. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0065.png" alt="skydrive iphone app" width="320" height="480" border="0" /> /> If you long hold on any image you have in a SkyDrive folder, Safari doesn’t seem to be able to capture the image for saving. I had to try in a separate browser (Atomic Lite) to save the image. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0075.png" alt="skydrive iphone app" width="320" height="480" /> /> For other types of files, including OneNote files, the mobile SkyDrive site compresses the files and provides zip files for download, most likely because there’s no mobile OneNote file viewer. Here’s a screenshot of my “Main” OneNote notebook. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0067.png" alt="skydrive iphone" width="320" height="480" /> /> For actual Office documents, you can easily view them on the mobile site, as well as download the original files, see thumbnails, navigate to a page in a multi-page document, see the text only, and more. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-18_034215.png" alt="skydrive iphone" width="580" height="436" /> /> For other types of files, such as PDF, Safari Mobile will display the file, but you can also launch another app to display the same file. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-18_035307.png" alt="access skydrive from iphone" width="580" height="438" /> /> That’s about all the features you’ll see in the mobile site. In my testing, loading href="http://skydrive.live.com">skydrive.live.com gave me blank pages at least half a dozen times so if you end up experiencing the same thing, just try later or go back to live.com.

While I need to admit that it’d be a lot nicer if there were official apps on Android and iOS to access SkyDrive, right now the mobile site for SkyDrive serves its purpose. Still, let’s hope this article gets read and considered by Microsoft developers so we can actually use SkyDrive more seamlessly on our mobile phones with downloadable apps.

Do you wish Microsoft would come out with official apps for SkyDrive? Let us know in the comments!

3 Ways To Add & Access Windows 7 Shortcuts To Work More Productively With Your Mouse

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut01.png?54167" alt="" />When it comes to using the computer, there are essentially two groups of people: those that always have their hands on the keyboard and are obsessed with keyboard shortcuts and those that do everything technically possible with the mouse. If you belong to the latter group, this article is for you.

In this article I will show you how to optimize your Windows 7 desktop for working with the mouse and point out tricks to increase your productivity.

1. Enable Toolbars & Quick Launch Bar

Keeping all your program shortcuts on the desktop is not very productive if it’s always covered by open windows. Hence the better solution is to enable Taskbar Toolbars for your most used programs or add program and folder shortcuts to the Quick Launch Bar.

Add Taskbar Toolbar:

  • right-click Taskbar
  • expand > Toolbars
  • check desired toolbar or select > New Toolbar…

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut02.png?54167" border="0" alt="add taskbar toolbar" />

You can turn any folder into a custom toolbar and fill it with shortcuts. />

Enable Quick Launch Bar:

Per default, the Quick Launch bar is disabled in Windows 7. However, it’s quite simple to add it.

  • follow steps above and select > New toolbar…
  • under > Folder enter the path > %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch and click > Select Folder
  • to customize your new Quick Launch toolbar, unlock the taskbar
  • you can now right-click > Quick Launch and set your preferences
  • while the taskbar is unlocked you can also drag and drop it to a different location

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut03.png?54167" border="0" alt="add quick launch bar" />

You can now use the Quick Launch bar to hold shortcuts for frequently used programs, folders, or files. Simply drag and drop them from the desktop into the Quick Launch bar.

2. Use Aero Peek

Aero Peek is a Windows 7 features that replaces the ‘show desktop’ shortcut that was formerly found in the Quick Launch bar. If you don’t want to clutter your Taskbar with toolbars or a Quick Launch bar and prefer to keep your shortcuts on the desktop, Aero Peek allows you to quickly show the desktop using your mouse. Simply move the mouse to the bottom right of your screen. After a second, all windows will become transparent and the desktop will show. A left-click will minimize all open windows and another left-click will restore them.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Aero02.png?54167" border="0" alt="show desktop with aero peek" />

3. Add class="vt-p" title="Handy Shortcuts" href="http://www.thewindowsclub.com/create-windows-desktop-shortcuts-easily-with-handy-shortcuts">Handy Shortcuts To Your Desktop

Handy Shortcuts is a free portable app for Windows 7 and Windows Vista that can add up to 20 different Windows functions as shortcuts to your desktop. Simply download and run the executable file, then click > Create next to the Windows functions you wish to see as shortcuts on your desktop.

My favorite three shortcuts are:

  • Shutdown Windows
  • Add and Remove Program
  • Safely Remove Hardware

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut04.png?54167" border="0" alt="add desktop shortcuts" />

We have previously reviewed a similar tool for Windows XP here: class="vt-p" title="Windows System Tools at your Fingertips with FastKake" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-system-tools-at-your-fingertips-with-fastkake/">Windows System Tools at your Fingertips with FastKake.

    Access All Your Travel Guides & Maps Offline With Stay [iPhone]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone.jpg" alt="offline maps iphone" />Traveling is a hot summer topic for most countries around the world. Since most of us are going on vacation and planning a nice trip, we tend to review and share more traveling tools during the high traveling season.

    We have had a bunch of useful class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/travel-planner/">travel planning tips already. Here’s a fun class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/social-travel-plans-gtrot-facebook/">Facebook tool to make your travel plans social, here’s how you can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/virtualtourist-planning-trip/">plan a road trip with Virtual Tourist and don’t forget to check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/gowaza-travel-plan-map/">Gowaza to make an informative travel plan map. This time we are sharing a brand new travel planning iPhone app from class="vt-p" href="http://www.stay.com">Stay.

    Stay is a free fun web-based tool we have class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/stay-printable-travel-guides/">reviewed previously. Basically, it offers a great feature set for planning and mapping your traveling and then saving and sharing your plans with friends, relatives or random people. Just a few days ago, the site launched their class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stay-com/id438740289?mt=8">official free app for the iPhone which makes downloading and accessing your travel guides much easier.

    Creating Your Guides

    To create a travel guide, you will still have to use the web-based application. This is the first thing to do because you won’t be able to do anything with the app unless you have an account with Stay.com with travel guides already created.

    Creating a guide is addictive though. The web interface is clean and very easy to use: you just browse the places and add them to your guide. There is no clutter or extra details interrupting the process. You browse the categories (like “Attractions”, “Restaurants”, “Art Galleries”, ” Hotels”, etc) and add anything that looks worth visiting to your guide. Search results are sorted by popularity among the site users – which makes picking fun places even easier.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-01.jpg" alt="offline maps iphone" width="550" height="434" />

    Once your guide is ready, you can download it to your iPhone.

    Using The iPhone Application

    To upload your saved guides to your iPhone you will need class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stay-com/id438740289?mt=8">Stay’s official application which is free. When you have it installed, log into your Stay.com account (it supports Facebook login which makes things even faster). Immediately after you log in, you can download your guides.

    The best thing about having this app is that all your city guides will have a complete offline map, so when you are away traveling, you don’t need to worry about finding an Internet connection:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-02.jpg" alt="offline maps" width="350" height="525" />

    To edit, improve or complete any of your existing guides, you will need to use the web-based interface again. But the good thing is, your iPhone guide will be updated automatically:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-03.jpg" alt="offline maps" width="350" height="525" />

    Travel Guides Inside Your iPhone

    You will most likely love having your travel guides inside your iPhone because:

    • Your guides are well structured (all your favorite destinations are broken into categories, so you can easily plan each day of your vacation),
    • You can view your guide on the map with all your chosen destinations pinned;
    • Each place you have added to your guide has a “more info” section with photos, description and location details.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-04.jpg" alt="offline maps iphone" width="500" height="375" />

    What do you think of the tool? It looks like a high-quality free app that is worth a check. I am not sure how the app works for less popular locations though. I have checked a few and it seemed to be rather detailed. What’s your experience? />

    The best thing about having this app is that all your city guides will have a complete offline map, so when you are away traveling, you don’t need to worry about finding an Internet connection:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-02.jpg" alt="offline maps" width="350" height="525" />

    To edit, improve or complete any of your existing guides, you will need to use the web-based interface again. But the good thing is, your iPhone guide will be updated automatically:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-03.jpg" alt="offline maps" width="350" height="525" />

    Travel Guides Inside Your iPhone

    You will most likely love having your travel guides inside your iPhone because:

    • Your guides are well structured (all your favorite destinations are broken into categories, so you can easily plan each day of your vacation),
    • You can view your guide on the map with all your chosen destinations pinned;
    • Each place you have added to your guide has a “more info” section with photos, description and location details.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/stay-com-iphone-04.jpg" alt="offline maps iphone" width="500" height="375" />

    What do you think of the tool? It looks like a high-quality free app that is worth a check. I am not sure how the app works for less popular locations though. I have checked a few and it seemed to be rather detailed. What’s your experience? />

    GeeMail – Access Gmail Outside the Browser With This Simple Desktop Client

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/0_geemail.jpg" alt="" />Gmail is now the only email service I use. It’s fast, extremely simple, has a lot of great features, and it has everything I’m looking for from an email client. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-labs/">Google Labs alone makes Gmail worth giving a try if you haven’t used it before, and there are plenty of third party add-ons you can utilize as well. Just recently, in fact, I showed you TaskForce, which gives you an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/taskforce-easiest-convert-gmail-emails-tasks/">easy way to convert Gmail emails into tasks.

    One of the things I’ve always liked about Gmail was that it was the first true cloud app I got used to accessing. Being completely browser based, it helped me transition from desktop apps to web-based ones, possibly because there simply weren’t any desktop email clients that could live up to what Gmail offered, at least for me, anyway.

    That no long holds true now that I’ve found GeeMail. GeeMail is a standalone Gmail client for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it’s a great answer for your offline needs.

    What Is GeeMail?

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.sourcebits.com/geemail/">GeeMail runs on Adobe AIR (cross-platform), and it looks and feels a lot like the Gmail that you’re used to. Since GeeMail supports the old UI of Gmail itself, things just work the way they do in Gmail, even the keyboard shortcuts.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/1_geemail.jpg" alt="" width="526" height="431" />

    With GeeMail, you can view all of your mail and even reply to messages while offline. When you do, your replies will be sent the next time the application detects that you are connected to the Internet.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2_geemail.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="319" />

    Gmail tried to give users an offline solution using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-online-apps-offline-with-google-gears">Gears, but GeeMail is a lot faster. It can grab hundreds of your most recent messages within minutes. It can do this because it only pulls in the bare essentials. Gmail’s labeling structure, for instance, won’t be pulled in by GeeMail unless you are online.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3_geemail.png" alt="" width="540" height="382" />

    There is no configuration with GeeMail. The program has everything in place which is required to access your Gmail, meaning you don’t need to configure POP and IMAP settings like traditional email clients.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/4_geemail.png" alt="" width="513" height="228" />

    GeeMail also has a search feature, which I believe is newly added. You can search emails regularly, or click on Advanced Search to do things like search only messages from or to a specific person.

    How Do I Use GeeMail?

    To get started with GeeMail, just head over to their class="vt-p" href="http://www.sourcebits.com/geemail/">website and click the Free Download button. The client will install with Adobe Air and the first time you run it you will see a login screen that looks strikingly similar to Gmail’s online login page. Type in your credentials to log in and get your mail.

    GeeMail will take a minute to connect to your Gmail account and load, but once it does you will have all of your email and labels in the app to begin viewing.

    Conclusion

    As with any email client, GeeMail takes a bit of getting used to, but once you have it where you feel comfortable, it’s quite useful for you. I will be sticking with the online version of Gmail, but this presents a nice offline solution for me if I ever need to read something important when my Internet connection goes down.

    Monitor Access & Guard Your Android Privacy With LBE Privacy Guard

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/lbelogo.png"/>One of the biggest reasons that I liked the idea of getting an Android phone was the entire concept of an operating system protected from viruses or other malicious software, thanks to the fact that installed apps don’t have root access to the OS.

    However, it didn’t take long before I wanted to enable root access so that I could install and run even more apps. The problem that arises is that once you’ve opened up that vulnerability, there is always the risk that you could accidentally install malicious software.

    We’ve covered a number of security apps for the Android, such as my article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mobile-defense-free-mobile-phone-tracking-system-android/">Mobile Defense, and Matt’s article on whether you need href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antivirus-android-phone-geeks-weigh/">antivirus protection for your Android.  However, vulnerability on any smartphone doesn’t only come just from possible viruses. It also comes from the potential that malicious software could hijack your data connection, sending emails without your knowledge, or hijacking your cellular account and sending SMS messages or making calls without your permission.

    Protect Yourself With LBE Privacy Guard

    When you first install the href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security&feature=search_result">LBE Privacy Guard, you’ll see all of the apps that are currently set as monitored and trusted. You can not only protect yourself from viruses, but you can monitor every access point in and out of your phone.

    In this way, the app goes far beyond “antivirus” software – it’s not necessarily protecting your phone from malicious software as it is monitoring all access points and letting you know exactly what’s going on with your phone. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor1.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" /> /> When you first run the software, all apps are set up as “monitored apps.” If you click on “Trusted Apps”, you’ll see that starting out only LBE Privacy Guard is included. Any application placed in this category is not monitored at all, so choose carefully!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor2.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    On the main menu, you’ll see all of the categories that the LBE Privacy Guard can monitor and control in order to protect your privacy. Categories include location sharing, financial information, your phone contacts and data, and much more. If the apps don’t have permissions enabled in these categories, then they aren’t sending or receiving data.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor3.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Click on PIM Access Manager to view apps that currently have permissions to send or receive SMS messages from your phone or to otherwise access your cellular phone line.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor4.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    If you click on any of these applications, you’ll see that you have three choices when setting permissions – either permit access, reject access, or require the application to prompt you for permission every time access is attempted.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor5.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    As you can see, all of the apps have the default setting of prompting required. This is a good setting to start out with, because you can see which apps you have running frequently access which data services. If you see any surprises, you can disable the apps that you didn’t know were accessing your services.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor6.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Other categories you’ll want to check out include things like location information (which apps have access to your GPS coordinates). Obviously this would be a significant privacy concern if there’s some app sharing your location details that you don’t know about.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor7.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Then there are apps that have access to your Internet/data connection. If you really want to keep close tabs on all data going in and out of your phone (especially if you are on a metered data plan), then this LBE Privacy Guard can be a real life saver.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor8.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    To change permission settings for any specific app, from the main menu select “App Management” and then click on the app that you want to modify. On the app permission screen, you can add or remove the requested access that the application wants to use, or you can choose to enable “Trust” to make it a “trusted application.”

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor9.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    A trusted application is one that not only has permissions to access your phone services that it wants to access, but it isn’t even monitored or logged by LBE Privacy Guard at all.  This is a good option for any applications that you absolutely know you can trust, like Gmail or Evernote.

    If you’ve noticed your phone running more slowly, or you have higher access charges on your bill than you expected, enable LBE Privacy Guard and give it a try. See if it comes up with any surprising applications that request access to your phone’s services.

    Let us know what you think of the app. And if you know of any other useful antivirus apps or connection monitoring apps like this one for Android phones, share your insight in the comments section below! />

    DocumentCloud: Direct Access To The Documents Behind The News

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documents.png" alt="news documents" />Want to know what’s really going on? Read the documents behind the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/news/">news. Journalists strive to summarize complex documents, but sometimes its nice to read source material in its entirety. Thanks to href="http://www.documentcloud.org">DocumentCloud, an web service partnered with various media organizations, now you can. Whether you’re a blogger looking for information others missed or just an enthusiastic follower of a particular story, DocumentCloud is a site you should bookmark.

    Everyone’s heard of WikiLeaks; most have heard of its recent spinoff href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/openleaks-wikileaks-alternative-live-news/">OpenLeaks. DocumentCloud isn’t aiming to compete with the likes of these organizations, who give leaked documents to the press and then to the masses. Instead DocumentCloud aims to give media organizations a place to submit their own news documents source material for the public to view it. It’s a supplement to what you get from the newspaper or television, not an alternative to it.

    With partnerships with a fast-growing number of news organizations, you’ll find a wide variety of news documents worth browsing.

    Finding Documents

    Head to DocumentCloud’s href="http://www.documentcloud.org/public">public search page to get started. You’ll find the interface easy to use, but let’s go over it briefly.

    To get started, you can type search terms. For example:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documentcloud-search.png" alt="news documents" width="580" height="298" />

    There are a lot of documents here, so be sure to search for something that interests you.

    Not sure if you want to search? You can browse by media source; the panel on the left lists them. Or, if you prefer, you can check out a list of entities mentioned in a lot of documents:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documentcloud-entities.png" alt="cloud documents" width="326" height="261" />

    This list includes people, organizations, cities and even phone numbers mentioned in documents. It’s a quick way to find interesting documents, if you’re just browsing.

    Once you’ve found a document you like, you can open it by clicking the globe icon beside it. This will direct you to the document itself, on the website of the organization that shared the document. Shared documents look like this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documentcloud-biggie.png" alt="news documents" width="580" height="248" />

    Yes, some of these are heavily redacted (though not quite as much as this document, which outlines the murder of rapper Biggie Smalls). That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of information in them, or that they couldn’t be a great read.

    Sources

    DocumentCloud is unique in that it allows media organizations to partner with it. href="http://www.documentcloud.org/contributors">Current partners are listed here, and include a lot of big names in North American journalism. As the project expands I’m sure the list will become more international.

    Want to become a source yourself? Unlike WikiLeaks, the process isn’t anonymous. Indeed, you need to represent a media organization, upload your documents on behalf of that organization and have approval from your editor before you can proceed. Find out more at href="http://www.documentcloud.org/contact">DocumentCloud’s contact page.

    Conclusion

    The web increases access to information; this site is an example of that. Unlike WikiLeaks however, DocumentCloud works with media outlets directly. Traditional media organizations, despite predictions to the contrary, aren’t going away anytime soon. They do the heavy lifting that makes good reporting possible, and sharing information with the masses only increases their relevance. Due to this, I think DocumentCloud is a great service for news outlets and consumers of news alike.

    Access Your Media Library On Any Device With QVIVO

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/0-qvivo-intro.jpg" alt="access media library" />How much content do you have lying around on your computer? By content, I mean music, photos, television episodes, downloaded movies, and so on. My computer is a multimedia machine as I am always on the lookout for the latest song or new show that is out.

    One thing that’s always been tough for me though, was keeping my collection organized and easily accessing my media library. Sure, I have iTunes, but I use it mainly because it’s the best app for keeping my iPod in sync. But isn’t there an app out there that will let me do more with my content? There is, and it’s called href="http://qvivo.com">QVIVO. If you’re looking to not only organize your media library, but make it extremely accessible to all your devices, I think you’ll really like what QVIVO has to offer.

    What Is QVIVO?

    href="http://qvivo.com">QVIVO is an application that works to make your entire media library digitally organized and easily accessible from any device. It’s designed to be the hub for your entire movie, TV, music, photo, and online video collection, and it organizes your media into libraries, plays many different file types, and even includes social elements like Facebook sharing.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-19-at-8.36.07-AM.jpg" alt="access media library" width="578" height="397" />

    QVIVO builds your library with cover art, trailers, actors, artists, and more from the files on your computer, and it is capable of playing them all back for you, regardless of format or resolution.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-19-at-8.36.58-AM.jpg" alt="access media library remotely" width="578" height="335" />

    You can also keep your friends up to date on what you love with QVIVO by posting reviews, rating your collection, uploading photo albums to Facebook, and chatting with your friends. That’s right, QVIVO features live Facebook messaging, which means you can chat with your friends about your favorite show while you’re watching it.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-19-at-8.30.12-AM.jpg" alt="access media library remotely" width="261" height="513" />

    Another cool feature of QVIVO is that it works just about everywhere. Apps are on the horizon for the iPad, Android tablets, TVs, and more, so you’ll be able to access your media library and stream from anywhere in your home with any number of compatible devices.

    How Do I Get QVIVO?

    In order to download and start using QVIVO, you just head over to their href="http://qvivo.com/beta/download/">signup page and fill in some basic information, including your desired username, email address, and password. Then, you will have the option of linking your Facebook account with QVIVO, but you are able to skip this step for now if you like.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-19-at-8.16.04-AM.png" alt="access media library" width="432" height="201" />

    On the next page you’ll see download links for both Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) and Mac (Intel 64-bit Snow Leopard), with Linux coming soon. QVIVO is still in beta, but very soon it will also be available for your iPhone, iPad, and Android devices as well.

    Once you sign up for QVIVO, you’ll receive an email with a confirmation link. When you click that you’ll be taken to My Account for the first time, where you can adjust your settings, connect with Facebook, etc.

    Conclusion

    In conclusion, I really like the look of QVIVO. From what I’ve seen, they’ve done some nice work. I especially like the layout and overall look of the app, as well as how it sorts your content. The social features make it interesting for me, and I’m looking forward to checking out the iPad app. What do you think of QVIVO? />

    Access Flickr On Your iPad With Flickpad For Free

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/flickpad.png" border="0" alt="ipad flickr app" width="138" height="140" />With all of its potential to be used by photographers as a portfolio on the go, the iPad still doesn’t have an official class="vt-p" href="http://flickr.com">Flickr app. While it’s possible to use the free iPhone app, the experience is not ideal, particularly where resolution and clarity are a must. class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flickpad-for-free/id384893889?mt=8">Flickpad For Free [iTunes link] is the ideal replacement for the official Flickr app. Not only is it optimised for the iPad’s screen, it pretty much blows the official Flickr iPhone app out of the water with its features.

    With Flickpad for Free you can keep all of your Flickr photos with you on the go, while also following your contacts latest uploads on the photo sharing website. Flickpad for Free comes with a few interesting features that sets it apart from other apps, but navigating the app may take some getting used to.

    id="more-61457"> /> All of the features of the app are also available for your class="vt-p" href="http://facebook.com">Facebook photos, in addition to features specific to the social network – with the ability to ‘like’ photos as an example.

    The app loads to a page showing the latest photos from your contacts, randomly strewn across the screen. Flick photos away to load more new images from your contacts. If you have added your Facebook account as well, your friend’s photos will be displayed here as well.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/homepage.jpg" border="0" alt="ipad flickr app" width="580" height="435" />

    Opening any given photo allows you to add or view comments, add it to your Flickr favourites, email it, open it in Safari or save it to your photo library.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/image.jpg" border="0" alt="flickr ipad upload" width="580" height="435" />

    Flickpad for Free is a little less than intuitive when it comes to the navigation. Three buttons are featured at the top right hand corner of the screen. The first button, Explore, takes you beyond your contacts, and allows you to take a look at some of the more popular work that is being shared on Flickr.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Explore.jpg" border="0" alt="flickr ipad upload" width="580" height="435" />

    The second button takes you to a menu from which you can view your own Flickr sets or favourites, your Facebook photos, and photos you have already seen or added to your favourites on Flickpad.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Navigation.png" border="0" alt="flickr ipad upload" width="284" height="480" />

    Your own sets and photographs, as well as those of other users, are displayed in a grid.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/sets.jpg" border="0" alt="flickr ipad" width="580" height="435" />

    The last button, the search button, allows you to search for friends or for keywords on Flickr, as well as for friends on Facebook. This is probably one of Flickpad’s most obvious weaknesses – there is no easy or intuitive way to navigate to your Flickr contacts’ or Facebook friends’ photos, other than by performing a search.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Search.png" border="0" alt="flickr ipad" width="307" height="202" />

    Having access to a list of your contacts, or even a link on any given photo leading to the user’s profile page would be a more ideal way to navigate your way around the app. That said, under Settings, you can access a list of your Flickr and Facebook contacts – not to navigate to their profiles or photos – but decide whether or not you want their photos to appear on your homepage.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/contacts.jpg" border="0" alt="ipad flickr app" width="580" height="435" />

    Flickpad supports multiple Flickr accounts, allowing you to quickly switch between different accounts, aside from being able to access your Facebook photos.

    If we could suggest another small change to Flickpad, aside from the navigation, it would be a few choices other than the faux-wood background. Personally, I would prefer a plain, dark background, particularly when you open up photos.

    There is a paid version of the app currently available for $4.99, but after the latest update, the only difference is that the free version is ad-supported – which is a very small price to pay for all the features you’re going to get in return.

    Access Your Computer From Anywhere Using Your iPad

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/remote.jpg" alt="remote access computer"/>Accessing your computer from anywhere using your href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/ipad">iPad is relatively easy to achieve, whether you’re using a Mac, PC, and even in some cases, a Linux machine. You can gain href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/remote-access">remote access to your own computer when you’re away from home or the office, help a friend out with their computer remotely, or even give a presentation from your computer to someone else’s iPad, all with the use of apps available for download for free from the iTune’s store.

    In addition, if you would rather access specific folders or files (of any kind) that has also been made possible for Mac and PC users.

    VNC and Screen Sharing

    TeamViewer HD

    href="http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx">TeamViewer is one of the easiest ways to get full access to your computer from your href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teamviewer-hd/id379424610?mt=8">iPad [iTunes link]. While Teamviewer is also compatible with the href="http://teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx?os=iphone">iPhone/iPod Touch and Android phones, using it on the iPad is of course much easier because of the larger screen that gives you easier control over the various features.

    To get started with TeamViewer HD, install the application on your Mac, PC or Linux machine, and launch it. It will instantly give you a username and password that you can share with anyone with whom you want to give remote access, or use with the iPad app.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/TeamViewer.jpg" alt="remote access computer"/>

    No need to mess around with hostnames and ports – it’s all done for you. The great thing about TeamViewer is not only its ease of use, but also the flexibility with which you can use due to the fact that it supports so many platforms.

    If you would prefer to use an easy-to-remember password on a consistent basis, you can select it under your preferences, otherwise the password will change each time you close the application.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Preferences.png" alt="remote computer access software"/>

    From your mobile device, you can type with an onscreen keyboard and control the mouse by dragging the cursor around the screen, giving you full access to all features on your computer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/TeamVieweriPad.jpg" alt="remote computer access software"/>

    TeamViewer HD is free for non-commercial use only, and is offered on good faith that users won’t abuse their policies. The application is ideal for giving tech support to family and friends, controlling your own computer from wherever you are, or even can be used to give realtime demonstrations from your PC to someone else’s iPad.

    Connect My Mac

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/connect-my-mac/id364933429?mt=8">Connect My Mac [iTunes link] is another easy way for Mac users to gain access to your computer using an iPad or iPhone. Rather than have to install anything on your computer, the connection can be achieved using your Mac’s inbuilt sharing settings.

    Navigate to your System Preferences and open the Sharing window. Make sure that Screen Sharing is checked, and make a note of the VNC address that is displayed on the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Sharing.png" alt="remote computer access software"/>

    Don’t forget to add a password, found under computer settings, to limit access to your computer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/password.png" alt="remote access ipad app"/>

    Launching Connect My Mac, enter the address as your hostname, enter your password, and connect.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/CMM1.png" alt="remote access ipad app"/>

    The advantage to using Connect My Mac over TeamViewer is the fact that you don’t have to install any extra software on your computer, and that you also have access to the Cmd+Opt+Esc function in the event that any of your applications freeze.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/CMM2.jpg" alt="remote access ipad app"/>

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iremotedesktop-free/id394062949?mt=8#">iRemoteDeskTop Free [iTunes link] from the same developers as Connect My Mac gives Windows users similar access to their Windows desktops. Unlike Connect My Mac, however, it will require the installation of a small program on your Windows machine to gain access.

    Media and Files

    If you would rather access specific media and files on your iPad, or even download them to your iPad, your best bet is href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/access-media-collection-browser-zumocast/">ZumoCast [iTunes link]. The app which is, amazingly enough, free gives you access to all kinds of files, including your music and video files, and pretty much any folder you choose. All you have to do is install the ZumoCast app on your Mac or Windows machine, and you’ll have easy and secure access to your files from your iPad or iPhone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/ZumoCast.png" alt="remote access computer"/>

    2 Great News Resources You Can Access via Facebook

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/0-fb-news-intro.jpg" />Where do you get your href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/news">news from? Less and less of you are thinking ‘ href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/newspapers">newspaper‘ every day. This is generally due to the fact that newspapers aren’t fast enough. For breaking news, most of us flock to our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watch-live-tv-news-online-livestation/">television to find out what’s going on. For even faster results, we turn to the Internet.

    It’s where we go on the Internet that interests me. Not everyone frequents news sites to find out what’s going on. In a lot of cases, we’re looking to the places we already spend the most time at–Google, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-track-breaking-news-alerts-online-with-twitter/">Twitter and Facebook. Facebook, as it turns out, is a great place to get our news, especially since it’s where we spend the most time online.

    In this article, I’ll show you 2 great places that you can get all the top news headlines from using Facebook.

    id="more-56025">

    Why Not Traditional News Sites?

    What makes Facebook so great is the sheer amount of power it holds in its 500+ million user base. The size of Facebook has basically made it a necessity for businesses to get in the game and create a Facebook page, and this includes news organizations.

    Let me paint a picture for you. You’re at your desk viewing your computer. You open your web browser up and start typing an address. Your destination? Facebook, of course. Now, let’s say you come across some buzz in your news feed about something newsworthy that just took place. What do you do?

    I’ll tell you what you don’t do–leave Facebook to head to a news site. These sites already have a presence on Facebook, so there really is no need to leave. You can simply click through to their page to get the information you need, as well as other users’ reactions to it.

    href="http://facebookheadlinenews.com/">Facebook Headline News

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/1-fb-news-headlinenews.jpg" />

    Let’s say you like the idea of getting your news on Facebook, but you don’t know what source to use. Facebook Headline News is an amazingly simple site that pulls in all of the top headlines from the news sources on Facebook.

    While it is a standalone website, all of the content is taken from Facebook pages. Headlines are separated by news outlet, and you have the option of clicking the header to be taken to that organizations Facebook page, or if you see a story of interest you can click the link to be taken directly to the article.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/2-fb-news-headlinenewstech.jpg" />

    Facebook Headline News is great because it allows you to view all of the industry news of a particular topic without having to follow all of the news sites associated with it. This prevents you from overloading your news feed in Facebook with, well, news.

    There are over 20 topics, including business, gadgets, gaming, technology, movies, music, TV, videos and sports.

    href="http://www.facebook.com/news">News on Facebook

    In contrast, if you would like less news and more headlines, you should investigate the News on Facebook page.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/3-fb-news-page.jpg" />

    Run by employees at Facebook, the news page ( href="http://www.facebook.com/news">facebook.com/news) is used to highlight news and media companies, giving you the “inside scoop” on what news sites are posting on Facebook.

    Comprised primarily of headlines from major news outlets like the BBC, CNN, and ABC News, you can check in daily to see what’s going on or ‘Like’ the page to get updates in your feed. If you’re not that into news but still want to know what’s going throughout the week this is a pretty good resource for you.

    Conclusion

    With these two resources, you can get all the news you’re looking for right from Facebook. Add these pages into your daily routine and you will know everything that’s going on in the world.

    4 Ways To Securely Configure A Wireless Router As A Public Access Point

    how to make wireless router into access pointDo you have some reason to offer free wifi to others? Maybe you own a business and you want to share your Internet with the customer waiting room.  Perhaps Uncle Fred is over for a while and he needs WiFi but you don’t need him snooping around your home network.  Or you could just be benevolent and want to share your Internet with neighbors and wardrivers.  There may also be ways to actually make some money from sharing your WiFi but we’ll get into that.

    OK, so here’s the situation.  You want to share the Internet but not your personal stuff.  There are actually several different ways of doing this.

    Get A Router That Supports Guest Browsing

    how to make wireless router into access pointWhat’s that?  They actually make routers with this ability already built in?  Yes they do and some of them are really easy to use.  You may think that it would have to be one of those extremely expensive routers but you’d be wrong.  For instance there is Cisco’s Valet which costs about $100 and is supposed to be quite easy to set up and use.

    Finding a router with the ability for guest browsing is the easiest way how to make a wireless router into an access point and keep your own network secure.  However, money is involved and we all know how we feel about that around here.

    Use One Non-Wireless Router & Two Wireless Routers

    You may be asking why I would suggest such an answer when the previous tip fits the bill with only one router.  What if you have some extra  hardware sitting around and you don’t want to go out and buy one of those new-fangled routers that support guest browsing?

    OK, so the idea here is to run the Internet connection through the non-wireless router and then connect the two wireless routers from their WAN ports to LAN ports on the non-wireless router.

    wireless access point router

    As long as you don’t add any static routes to the non-wireless router, you will actually be running two wireless networks that can’t “see” one another.  Use one as your own secure wireless network and the other can be the public access point.

    Install Firmware On Your Wireless Router That Supports Guest Browsing

    wireless access point routerFirmware is basically the program that runs on your router that allows it to do what it does.  There is an open source firmware that is compatible with many routers called dd-wrt.

    In Jorge’s article about how to turn an old router into a wireless bridge, he is kind enough to explain the process of installing the firmware on your router.  I will caution you the same way he did and say that you really need to follow the instructions for your router type very carefully because it is possible to render the router useless.

    There are tutorials out there to show you how to configure the public access point feature (this one is quite easy to follow).  Once finished, you should have a public access point similar to those coffee shop connections with a splash screen and all.

    Get Fonera 2.0 & Make Some Money With Your Public Access Point

    wireless router access pointVisit Fon.com and get an idea of what they are trying to do with their router offerings.  Built in is the ability to make a a few bucks by sharing your wifi signal.  The idea is that when a non-Fon user logs on, they have to pay and this is when you get paid.

    Fon spots (what they call their public access points) are free to other Fonera owners so just purchasing one gives you access to any of the one million other Fon spots in the world.

    Check out the video introduction.

    Now you have no excuse to leave your wifi open and insecure for the world to use.  I gave you four methods how to securely make a wireless router into an access point and I even included one way to possibly make some money doing so.  So tell me, how will you securely share your wifi?

    Ipod Mp3 Downloads – Total Access

    The Downloads

    Downloading media to your MP3/iPod has been around for many years, it’s just as old as the MP3players them self’s. Finding the resource that allows you to get this exciting content is the big issue among iPod/MP3 owners.

    Experiencing Excitement

    With everyone ranting and raving about their great download service getting them the iPod MP3 Downloads right when they want them exactly when they want them all right under their finger tips, is driving people to find this resource.

    iPod MP3 down loads are becoming hugely popular these days, because they allow several songs or pieces of audio to be stored without occupying a large amount of storage space also allowing you to download whatever you want.

    The Numbers Are Large

    There are about 110 million active iPod/MP3 users world wide. Did you know the average iTunes member down loads a minimum of 300 songs and 20 movies a year. That’s $500 a year on just down loads. WOW! Did you also know that iTunes is losing customer’s and members by the hundreds each and every year. It won’t take you long to figure that one out. These people are exploring their options.

    The iPod MP3 Download Resource

    You must know that there is no such thing as free iPod MP3 music downloads. You may have seen such sites advertised that way, but the truth is they all want you to purchase a membership fee in order to gain access to the free MP3 down loads. So why advertise FREE when all you have to say is ” You Can Get Access To Over 300 Million iPod MP3 Downloads For As Low As $34.95″. The price is completely worth the package deal and has been satisfying customer’s worldwide.

    Imagine being able to download anything you want anytime you want. Movies, Music, Games, & everything else. Just imagine the possibilities of unlimited access. You would never have to pay each time you want to download your favorite song, like the hit new single by AKON and definitely never pay month by month. Now that sounds very tempting.

    Take Me To The Source

    Another thing to keep in mind is there are some MP3 sites out there that offer this very rewarding feature. However, you need to be cautious, as they are illegal and could potentially get you into big trouble. Honestly, you don’t want the law knocking down your door because you download some MP3 Downloads, do you?. Of course not. Typically the best way to get around this issue, is to find an MP3 Download review site of your choice. Allowing you to see what’s hot, new and exciting in the MP3 down loads world.

    Great Lengths

    There are some excellent reviews out there that go through a lot of trouble to get the outstanding results that they have by using their own money to see what you would get if it were your money. Most iPod MP3 download review sites even have an editors choice pick or even just their best choice among all their choices. Now that would be they way to go about finding the site you like, because recommendations always rock.

    Gaining Access to the SYSTEM account

    Here is a simple tutorial you can use to gain access to the SYSTEM account, which is basically a superadministrator account. With access to the SYSTEM account you can change Administrator passwords and using the Group Policy Editor you can lock the Administrator out of tasks completely. I have only tested this on Windows XP. There is no guarantee that this will work on any other operating system. Here is a step by step tutorial to gain access to the system account: 1. Click on Start, go to Run and type cmd.exe. 2. On the command prompt that opens, type “at (time) /interactive cmd.exe” (without quotes. the time field can be any time you want but I recommend 1-2 minutes into the future so that you do not have long to wait. For example, if the current time is 9:10 PM you would type “at 21:21 /interactive cmd.exe” without quotes into the command prompt. It must be done in 24 hour time, or else it will not work) 3. Wait for the new command prompt to open. When it does, press CRTL+ALT+DELETE. 4. In Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and end the explorer.exe process (the Windows shell). 5. Close out of Task Manager and exit the 1st command prompt you opened, being careful not to exit out of the new one. 6. In the new Command Prompt type “cd ..” without quotes. 7. In the Command Prompt type “explorer.exe” without quotes. 8. The Windows shell should start. It may set up your desktop and documents folders. When it is finished you will have access to the SYSTEM account. Have fun

    Access Legal Systems And Dps Software – The Partnership Works!

    In March 2009 DPS Software announced that they had taken over the development and

    maintenance, support services, sales and ongoing training duties of Access Legal Systems. The take over of Access Legal Systems means that firms such as CTurner Solicitors, who use both Access and DPS Software solutions, now use one company for the support and maintenance services of their software.

    CTurner Solicitors is a general legal practice situated in the market town of Blackburn, Lancashire. This three partner firm was originally established over twenty years ago when it specialised in law relating to the road haulage industry. Since then, it has expanded to cover a wide range of specialist areas including conveyancing, criminal and family law, personal injury and employment.

    CTurner have implemented a fully integrated system for accounts and case management, drawing on the expertise of Access Legal Systems and DPS Software. The firm use Access Legal Systems for the accounts, time recording and case management in Family, Personal Injury and Conveyancing. This system works in conjunction with their Criminal Billing System from DPS Software.

    The Solutions

    CTurner Solicitors have been a long term user of accounts and practice management systems from Access Legal Systems. The firm installed a DOS‐based system in 1992 and since then, the system has evolved into one of the most feature‐rich Windows‐based systems currently available.

    Access Legal Accounting and Time Recording System has been designed to meet the requirements of the Solicitors Accounts Rules 1998 and provide the solicitors’ practice with the financial and management information necessary to manage the practice and comply fully with the solicitors accounts rules.

    The product can be run as a stand alone application or it can be fully integrated with the Access Practice and Client Database, Case Management and Time Capture systems to provide fully comprehensive practice management, marketing and fee earner support systems.

    The time billing system enables all time spent in the preparation of letters and emails, the handling of telephone calls or attending meetings to be automatically captured along with all disbursements. In addition, the integrated diary system enables the firm to keep track of all key events and dates to ensure that every case was being handled efficiently. Staff are alerted of all events such as court dates, document submissions, witness notifications, contract exchange and completion dates enabling key actions to be completed in a timely manner.

    The Access Legal practice management system delivers major benefits by enabling the departments where it is in use to maintain complete records of everything relating to individual matters. This information is readily available to members of staff from any PC and has reduced the handling of paper‐based files.

    The firm’s Access Legal System works alongside their DPS Criminal Billing System. DPS One Office Crime CDS system contracting operates according to the latest criminal Publicly Funded & Franchising criteria. It is a unique and powerful system which can literally save hours of valuable fee earning time and facilitates accurate and efficient billing.

    The Practice Manager at CTurner Solicitors commented: “In common with many other legal practices, there is an increasing emphasis on integration to drive down costs and meet the demands of an ever more competitive business environment. Our system has the flexibility to adapt to our way of working and is enabling the management team to keep a close watch on the business to ensure that every case is handled to the highest professional standards.”
