Giver – Still The Best Way to Send Files Across A Network [Linux]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_intro.jpg" alt="" />You know that, no matter what operating system you use, sharing files across a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/network/">network can sometimes be a pain. Sadly, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux">Linux isn’t always an exception in this category either, although for basic folder sharing some distributions make it easier. Having to set up a shared folder is even more painful when all you really want to do is send a file to a different computer, without having to use class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dropbox">Dropbox or another outside service.

class="vt-p" href="http://code.google.com/p/giver/">Giver, which has already class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-transfer-files-easily-among-linux-machines/">been reviewed back in early 2009, still belongs to the list of top-notch programs. This is even more surprising considering that the last release came out in 2007. Although the program itself hasn’t changed, the distributions themselves have changed dramatically, and yet the program still works.

Giver does file sharing a little differently. Instead of sharing a folder to the network, you can simply choose a file or folder to send to a certain computer. In other words, this is a one-time transaction, like sending an email with an attachment.  That’s all Giver does while barely having any options to configure in order to keep the experience as simple and flawless as possible.

Installation

In my own experience all distributions simply name the package “giver”, but if you use a distribution with a small user base, you may want to double check.

Procedure

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_main.jpg" alt="" width="326" height="561" />

As soon as Giver is installed on the two computers you would like to send files to and from, open up Giver on each computer. It magically detects the instances of Giver running on your own computer and any other computer on the network. From there, you can either left click, choose the option you want, and choose the file/folder to send, or you can drag and drop a file or folder onto a computer in the list to do the same.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_notification.jpg" alt="" width="577" height="54" />

A notification should then appear on the computer that is receiving the file or folder, where you must click Accept in order to start the process. It should go relatively quickly (it’s using your full class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/lan/">LAN or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/wifi/">WiFi speed, after all), and it will be stored in whatever folder you have set.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_accept.jpg" alt="" width="574" height="136" />

Options

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_options.jpg" alt="" width="466" height="560" />

Speaking of options, I’m going to mention them really quick. Like I said, there aren’t very many at all, as you can probably determine from the screenshot. Again, this was meant for easy and flawless operation with no configuration needed out-of-the-box. There are only three possible things you can configure. You can change your name if you would like (which it originally takes from whatever you have set for your system account for “Full Name”), what kind of icon appears whenever people see your computer on their list, and where to save files that were given to you.

Considerations

Linux distributions have changed quite a bit, considering the arrival of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gnome-3-beta-desktop-linux/">GNOME 3 and the general advancement of software stacks. No worries though, Giver runs perfectly fine alongside newer software stacks, and doesn’t give you any problems. However, it would be helpful to note that Giver directly uses ports. Therefore, if a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-open-router-ports-their-security-implications">port is not open thanks to your system firewall, nothing will get through, even if your computer appears on the other person’s list.

Normally, setting a port exception would do the trick (the list even says what port it’s using!), but because Giver randomizes the port each time you start it up, that may not be a viable solution for you. I would think that the developers were fine with it being this way because it is meant to be used over a network anyway, which should be appropriately configured and protected. Therefore, for easy operation you should disable your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firewall/">firewall, but to protect yourself, make sure that your network has a firewall itself and that it works well.

Also, if you’re using this on a mobile computer, I highly recommend that you immediately turn on your firewall again before leaving your protected network. Linux may not be affected by any viruses (at least there’s nothing common out there), but direct attacks from hackers are still a possibility.

Conclusion

For networks, Giver is almost a must, especially in larger environments such as workplaces. Despite its age, it is very stable and works as great as it should. Maybe someday a group can come back and enhance Giver even more by adding new features, such as GTK3 support. However, as long as it runs, everything is in order.

How often do you share files and folders? Do you often find yourself only doing this for some individual files? Would you use Giver, and how would you maybe improve it? Let us know in the comments!

    How To Restore Tabs In Chrome & Firefox Across Machines With TabCloud

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/tabcloudlogo.jpg" alt="how to restore firefox tabs" />Ever since I installed class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/guide-to-ubuntu-karmic-koala">Ubuntu on my machine, I’ve needed more than ever to find ways to synchronize installations of programs I frequently use. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/xmarks-syncs-bookmarks-passwords-major-browsers/">Xmarks worked so incredibly well until it recently started giving me countless errors, as did class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mkhdfdmmoaohalidmbaonmbgfhkhmgme">Swimming Session, on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-awesome-chrome-extensions-productivity/">Google Chrome. Then came class="vt-p" href="http://chrometabcloud.appspot.com/">TabCloud in my search and boy, was I relieved that someone had thought about tabs sessions in different machines and browsers, specifically Chrome (which means it works for Chromium as well) and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/speed-up-firefox-browsing-with-keyboard-shortcuts/">Firefox.

    class="vt-p" href="http://chrometabcloud.appspot.com/">TabCloud is an class="vt-p" href="http://github.com/Connorhd/TabCloud">open-source extension that you can use to save sessions and restore them later on another installation of the supported browsers, even across machines and OS’s.

    id="more-64281"> /> It’s been working unbelievably nicely when I use Chrome in Windows, and Chromium on Ubuntu. Now, with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-bookmarklets-in-quix">Quix solving the bookmark keywords issue, and TabCloud to share links, working in different OS’s isn’t such a pain.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/3.13.png" alt="how to restore firefox tabs" width="329" height="509" />

    TabCloud for Chrome can be found class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/npecfdijgoblfcgagoijgmgejmcpnhof">here, while the experimental Firefox plugin can be downloaded class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tabcloud/">here. You have to sign in with your Google account to get started.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/0.png" alt="restore tabs firefox" width="388" height="292" />

    Saving Your Sessions

    Once you’ve installed this extension and have signed in with your Google account, you can explore the two options available from right-clicking the icon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/18.png" alt="restore tabs firefox" width="462" height="168" />

    You can choose to restore sessions either in the current tab or in a new window. You can also choose whether or not to go through a confirmation dialog when you delete saved sessions or close a window.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/28.png" alt="restore tabs firefox" width="310" height="168" />

    So when you’re ready to save a session, you have to first click on the TabCloud icon, and then on the disk icon, which then saves your tabs. You can easily confirm what you’re saving by looking at the available favicons. You can type a name for the particular session or leave the session name blank, which TabCloud autofills with the date and time of the saved session.

    Managing Your Sessions

    You can also drag and drop the favicons to reorder them, but this is only available on Google Chrome.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/310.png" alt="restore chrome tabs" width="321" height="214" />

    Even if you don’t remember so well what site the favicon represents, you can just hover over the favicon to see a tooltip with the title of the site. You can also click on any one icon to jump directly to that website.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/45.png" alt="restore chrome tabs" width="316" height="268" />

    After you start saving more and more sessions, you can of course delete any of them, but in Firefox you won’t be able to get a confirmation dialog, like you can in Google Chrome.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tips-tricks-google-android-operating-syste/">Android smartphone owners will be happy to know that  class="vt-p" href="http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/tabcloud_miyj.html">there’s an official TabCloud app, so you can continue exploring the same topics you had on your desktop browser, just on a tinier screen. Meanwhile, iOS users can bookmark the  class="vt-p" href="https://chrometabcloud.appspot.com/tabs.jsp">iPhone-friendly page.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/51.jpg" alt="how to restore firefox tabs" width="580" height="435" />

    The main selling point of this amazing extension is that you can very easily save your most current tabs. Xmarks, and even Google Chrome, Firefox and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-extensions-opera-11-alpha/">Opera natively can sync your whole bookmark collection but when you’re using different browsers and want to continue browsing the last set of tabs you had on your work computer or a library machine (with your portable installation of Chrome or Firefox) at home. TabCloud is a remarkable plugin that helps ease the pain that is working across different operating systems and browsers. Its interface is so simple and easy-to-use that you’ll definitely want to tell your friends about it so they too, can have a more enjoyable time working on different machines.

    solve crossword puzzlesThe heights of egotism is said to be found in a person who does the New York Times crossword with a pen. Well, that’s a humorous take on one of the most popular mind sports that goes on around the world every morning.

    Even a diehard faultfinder won’t find fault with the fact that when you solve crossword puzzles, it’s both fun and educational. I certainly went for these two great qualities of crossword puzzles when I looked at a method on designing our own crossword puzzles.

    We talked about the crossword software called Eclipse Crossword in that post. The comments supported the value of crosswords as easy and fun educational tools. It was only later that I came across what is considered to be one of the most popular crossword software going around.

    Across Lite is a little free software that you can use to create, publish, and solve crossword puzzles on your PC.  Let’s take a look at why this 996KB download is favored by the likes of The New York Times, Washington Post, and others for their downloadable puzzles.

    Across Lite to Solve Crossword Puzzles

    Across Lite may be a digital tool but the first look retains some of the black and white appeal from the newspaper. The crossword software opens up with a few choices of sample crosswords. Open one up and see how it looks:

    Just for a bout of egotism, you can switch on the timer.  To bring more of the old newspaper appeal, you can toggle the Pencil icon (again, if you aren’t sure of the answer). Entering letters is easy as selecting a square and pressing a key. You can navigate the Across or Down squares with the mouse or the Tab key. You can also keep score if you fancy yourself across and down the squares.

    If your ego starts taking a beating, you can check your answers or choose to take a few hints, or completely reveal the answers with a button press.

    Across Lite is user friendly for the crossword buff as it comes quite close to digitally replicating the newspaper feel (notice the hand cursor). Inserting, erasing, and viewing answers are easier than on a newspaper.

    Am I Limited To The Sample Puzzles?

    Across Lite’s puzzle format (.puz) is one of the most widely used on the web. That makes Across Lite ideal software for downloading and using .puz files from a myriad of sources. NY Times asks for a premium membership to access their database of puzzles. But they do regularly release a few sample puzzles for download with Across Lite.

    Community forums like Cruciverb have a puzzle database that’s worth a tap. Papers like Boston Globe make their crossword puzzles available for download a few weeks after they appear in print. I got all this information from a simple but informative page maintained by Will Johnston.

    Another great resource is Crossword Puzzles by Ray Hamel. Check out the Software page for a great list of crossword tools.

    But Now I Want To Create Crosswords Of My Own

    A true blue cruciverbalist will not be happy with mere solving. He needs to create too. Crossword constructors send their puzzles to newspapers for publication. Then there is the value of crosswords as a teaching tool. Like promoting some ESL learning on your personal blog or website, or even as a downloadable .puz file.

    Across Lite can create crossword puzzles, but it’s not a one button process. The detailed steps are explained in the downloadable PDF file and also the program’s Help. The gist of it is that you create your crossword clues in a text file following strict syntax rules. The text file is then opened and saved using Across Lite in the default .puz format. You can also print it out.

    Using the syntax route is a bit time consuming, especially when you have quicker online and offline crossword applications available.

    Across Lite is available as a download for both Windows and Mac OS X. A Windows Mobile version is available for purchase.

    Across Lite is a nice and free solution to ditch my Sunday newspaper crossword and curl up with the laptop and a teapot. What do you think?
