Good job, Internet. You win.

As the day of online activism opposing SOPA and PIPA continued, supporters quickly began to have second thoughts. Now, the final blows have been struck. Senator Harry Reid has decided to put the Protect IP Act on permanent hiatus, and Representative Lamar Smith pulled his support for the Stop Online Piracy Act. In doing so, the bills have been effectively killed.

There was amusement to be had from watching those who formerly backed the bill scatter as the wave of anti-SOPA/PIPA press swept the Internet on January the 18th. Sites regularly used by nearly everyone with Internet access, such as Google and Craigslist, placed public denouncements of the bills on their sites. Over 4.5 million people signed Google’s online petition against the bills.

Other sites, such as Wikipedia, Reddit and Wired, restricted access to their content as a warning about what could happen if the bills became law. An estimated 162 million people visited Wikipedia during its 24-hour blackout, no doubt helping to spread the word.

Today’s news that the bills will not be moving forward was met with celebration that – this being the Internet – manifested itself in images like the one above. It is unlikely that we’ll ever see these particular bills come to a vote now that they’ve been so thoroughly tarnished.

But don’t be surprised if we see the ideas resurface later. Even while removing support for SOPA, Representative Lamar Smith stated “The Committee will continue work with copyright owners, Internet companies, financial institutions to develop proposals that combat online piracy and protect America’s intellectual property.” Translation? This isn’t over.

There are few companies easier to bash than Ubisoft when it comes to copy protection. The company has long used an activation scheme on most of its games that ties activation to your computer’s hardware configuration. This means that when you change your hardware, you have to re-activate your Ubisoft games before they’ll run.

Such a process isn’t entirely unheard of in software. Registration keys for Microsoft Windows work in a similar way. But Microsoft’s product registration usually only kicks in after a major system change, such as a motherboard upgrade. Ubisoft’s DRM is apparently a bit more sensitive.

This was discovered by Guru3D when they attempted to use the new game Anno 2070 for graphics benchmarking. Though aware of the game’s DRM, the site figured that swapping out video cards would be OK. They were wrong. Swapping cards required that the software be activated all over again. That would be fine if Ubisoft offered unlimited activations, but they don’t. Many of the company’s titles only come with three activations. If you use them up, you could be out of luck.

Ubisoft’s support does state that further activations can be provided if you use them up, but Guru3D’s initial attempts to obtain them were refused. The site has since been contacted by Bluebyte, the developer of Anno 2070, and activation for the site’s copy has been unlocked. But this action is almost certainly a unique response to Guru3D’s complaint.

If you’re going to buy an Ubisoft game, you’d better be careful about your hardware upgrades.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/logo.jpg" alt="" />The world’s most advanced mobile operating system just got better, or so they say – and I’m inclined to agree. Apple’s latest iOS release finally brings some much-requested features to the iDevice line-up, with even the original iPad and iPhone 3GS benefiting from the update. Whether you’ve got a new iPhone 4GS or an old iPod Touch 3G there are over 200 improvements, additional security precautions and that silky smooth interface we’re oh-so-used to on our smartphones these days.

Here’s a quick checklist for those of you who have updated recently.

iCloud

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months you’ll have heard of iCloud, a smart new way to access your files from multiple devices. In order to use iCloud you’ll first need to sign in from your device, and you can do this under iCloud in Settings.

iCloud includes an @me.com email address which you’ll need to register in order to proceed. Once you have registered your account and linked it to an Apple ID you’ll see something similar to the screenshot below, which controls what is backed up. Remember, you only have 5GB of free storage to start with – though you can buy more in the Storage & Backup menu below these settings.

With your iCloud set-up either update Mac OS X which includes iCloud integration, or grab the Windows iCloud Control Panel from Apple. With this installed, ensure iCloud Backup is enabled on your device and your pictures, contacts, notes and anything else you specified will appear on your PC after each daily backup (when the phone is plugged in, locked and connected to Wi-Fi).

Twitter

This latest update brings deep Twitter integration into iOS, meaning you can Tweet from nearly anywhere on your phone. This also means that you only need to log into Twitter once and each app that requests access to your account you will only require one-time authorization.

You can find Twitter under Settings, where you can log into multiple accounts. Here is also where you control which applications have access to your credentials, so you can quickly disable anything that’s misbehaving. Once you’ve logged in you’ll still need to download the Twitter app from the App Store, grant it access to your account and you’re set to tweet.

Oh and see that Update Contacts button? That will pull information from your contacts and try to determine whether they’re using Twitter, adding relevant information and pictures. Handy.

Notifications

Finally! iOS users have proper, non-intrusive notifications and a lovely new Notification Center to store them. No longer will you miss a tweet, email or Game Center notification as they’re all accessed by swiping from the top of the screen vertically down.

You can set up your notifications on a per-app basis in Settings then Notifications. Note there are three options for most apps – None which shows up nothing on-screen but plays a sound, Banners which displays a small reminder at the top of the screen without interrupting your Angry Birds session and Alerts which are the notifications seen in iOS 4.3 and below.

I had quite a task setting up Twitter notifications, mainly because the app did not ask me for permission on first boot. If you can’t find Twitter under Notifications and would like to add it to your Notification Centre, reboot your phone and re-launch the app. You should be prompted to allow push notifications, and afterwards you can return to Notifications and add it much like your other apps.

Grab Some Apps

It comes as no surprise that Apple also produce apps for their mobile OS, and a few new ones were released in conjunction with iOS 5. Amongst them is Find My Friends, an app which allows iOS users to locate each other using on-request location detection. It might run your battery down a bit faster than normal use but it’s both fun and useful, especially if you’re a concerned parent or some kind of stalker.

In one giant leap forward for mobile security, Find My iPhone is another addition that’s completely free to use. Once iCloud has been set-up, visit iCloud.com and click Find My iPhone. After supplying a password Apple will attempt to locate your phone provided you haven’t turned off location services in Settings.

For those of you with multiple devices there is an app available for download to help you keep track of your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone from anywhere in the world, allowing you to wipe, lock or send messages to it should it go missing. Lastly iBooks is a handy Apple-engineered eReader and PDF wallet that’s ideal for keeping bus timetables and classic literature to hand.

Finally…

Now that you’ve updated to iOS 5 you no longer require iTunes in order to update your device. Those of you who only ever installed iTunes in order to update can now boldly remove iTunes from your Windows PC or simply forget it exists on a Mac. It’s worth mentioning that if you’re interested in syncing your device with a computer wirelessly you’ll still need it (at least for the time being anyway).

I’ve read a lot of complaints about Newsstand, and how it cannot be hidden in a folder somewhere. Unfortunately Newsstand is a folder and thus will have to be hidden on your final page of apps if you don’t intend on using it.

Conclusion

Of course there are a lot more features and improvements, amongst them incredibly fast page rendering times within mobile Safari and iMessage, a service that’s set to cause a headache for both carriers and BlackBerry, I’m sure. Last but not least you can finally take a picture with the volume up button – now that’s progress.

What are your favourite features of iOS 5? Anything else you’d recommend? Do you like the improvements? Have your say in the comments below.

So much so that when Jobs was forced to take time off work to recover from his health issues, things started to look a bit shaky at Apple and many were left wondering what the company would do when Jobs wasn’t around anymore. Many may consider Jobs to be a God but he isn’t immortal (not even Apple has cracked that one yet!).

This great infographic, made by Online College Resource, outlines the rise and fall of Apple’s fortunes, based on Jobs’ leaves of absence. It also has a nice introduction to Apple University, which was set up to “teach Apple employees how to think like Steve Jobs and make decisions that he would make”. So clearly they are preparing for an Apple-PJ (Post-Jobs).

class="vt-p" href="”http://www.boxee.tv/box”">Boxee Box has the tech world buzzing. Will this startup, armed with the power of open source, be able to compete with Google and Apple’s offerings in the TV marketplace? I think so, mostly because of the many amazing things you can make Boxee do.

Don’t believe me? Try it out. You don’t need to buy the box to use the service: you can install it on any Windows, Mac or Linux machine and then plug that into your television (or just use on your computer as is!)

It’s easy to think of Boxee as a one-trick pony: a neat way to bring the likes of Hulu to your television. There’s more than that though: Boxee can compile videos from your social networks, aggregate your podcasts and even serve as a decent launcher for your favorite games.

One of those apps I can’t live without, I think that Boxee is the best media center around. To really get the most out of the application, though, you need to set it up well. Here are five tips to get you started.

Enable Twitter/Facebook/Buzz

This is just awesome: every video shared by your social media contacts is aggregated on Boxee. Head over to Boxee.tv and log in. Click the Services button and you can authorize Boxee to access your social networks.

Sign in to all your services here and they’ll integrate really nicely into Boxee. Then, when you get to your TV, you’ll be able to browse all the videos your friends are sharing. This could be footage of your newborn cousin, or an insane panda shared by an Egyptian colleague. (thanks, Nancy!) Point is, you can watch these videos from the comfort of your couch instead of at your desk at work.

To me this is a valuable way to keep work and play separate: I only watch web videos while at home. It’s nice to have quick access to these videos from my couch.

RSS Feeds

While you’re logged into Boxee, you might as well add some RSS feeds. Click the Feeds button and you can very quickly add your favorite podcasts:

Any RSS feed can go here, so be creative. If there’s a show Boxee doesn’t have an app for you can add it this way, as I did with Homestar Runner (although they sadly don’t update much these days). It’s also how I get my all-important weekly fix of The Bugle (which someone really needs to develop a Boxee App for, but I digress).

You’ll find your feed in the RSS app, once you add them. If you don’t have this app already, find it by opening the Apps section, then browsing to the App Library. Search for “RSS” and you’ll quickly find the feed.

Explore The Apps

While you’re looking at the App Library, I highly suggest you explore. You’ll find a great app for keeping track of the weather, another one for watching Funny Or Die videos and channels for many of the web’s hottest shows. Heck, there’s even a Justin.TV app you could use to watch sports not broadcast in your country. Browse the app library and I promise you’ll find something you like.

Add The Master Repository

But if not, consider adding FuzzTheD’s excellent master repository. This can quickly give you access to plenty of apps not found in the App Library. Doing this is really easy; just open the Apps section on Boxee, then bring up the left panel. At the bottom of the left panel you’ll see this button:

Click it, and you’ll see an option to add a repository. Add dir.fuzzthed.com and you’re in business: you now have access to an alternative collection of apps. Some of these may well find their way into the library eventually, but it’s fun to be able to stay on the cutting edge. Let me know what kind of jewels you find here in the comments below.

Set Up Games & ROMs

While you’re playing around with that repository, you might as well add the Launcher app and turn Boxee into the ulitmate ROM and game launcher. I find this rounds out my television nicely, giving me access to my favorite retro games. It works really well with Multi-emulator Mednaen.

Got Any More?

Can you guys think of any more must-do tweaks to Boxee? I’d love to hear them below. Go ahead and share them and you just might find yourself mentioned in an upcoming MakeUseOf post.<br

MP3 file will “lose” in certain situations. For example, it may lose a MP3 file if MP3 player software is forced to quit unexpectedly, or if your computer has a power interruption while you’re playing, or if you close the file without saving changes,or virus attacks,or fomatted by a mistake,or deleted by a mistake operation.
If you format hard drive and deleted MP3 files by a mistake operation will loss data, you need data recovery software to recover MP3 files.
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3( MP3 ), is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players. MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group as part of its MPEG-1 standard.
The use in MP3 of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners. An MP3 file that is created using the setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file that is about 1/11th the size of the CD file created from the original audio source. An MP3 file can also be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality. The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people.

The MPEG-1 standard does not include a precise specification for an MP3 encoder, but does provide example psychoacoustic models, rate loop, and the like in the non-normative part of the original standard.
Decoding, on the other hand, is carefully defined in the standard. Most decoders are “bitstream compliant”, which means that the decompressed output – that they produce from a given MP3 file – will be the same, within a specified degree of rounding tolerance, as the output specified mathematically in the ISO/IEC standard document.
Several bit rates are specified in the MPEG-1 Layer 3 standard: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256 and 320 kbit/s, and the available sampling frequencies are 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz.

When performing lossy audio encoding, such as creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio. Using a lower bit rate provides a relatively lower audio quality and produces a smaller file size. Likewise, using a higher bit rate outputs a higher quality audio, but also results in a larger file.

Every Windows XP computer contains a mountable or system volume, which has operating system installed on it. After completion of POST (Power On Self Test) operation, your computer reads the system partition and loads operating system. However, if your system is unable to recognize the boot or system partition, your Windows machine may not boot up.

This behavior enders your system unusable and inaccessible, causing severe data loss. In such critical situations, an updated and valid backup proves great help. But, if backup is not available, windows recovery is the only way to go.

In a practical instance of unbootable Windows XP computer, you may come across the below error messages while booting up y our computer:

“Unmountable Boot Volume”

After the above error message, boot process gets interrupted. The operating system can not load and you can not get into your system. In order to fix this behavior and recover Windows data, you must figure out the root of this problem.

What causes ‘Unmountable Boot Volume’ Error in Windows XP?

You may run across this behavior of Windows XP due to any of the below reasons:

The Boot.ini file of your Windows XP computer is either missing or damaged.

The hard drive is bad and unreadable.

Solution

There are two possible solutions of this problem, depending upon the cause of the problem:

Missing or Corrupt Boot.ini File-

Boot your system in recovery console.

Type chkdsk /p in recovery console to check if drive is bad.

Reboot your system if chkdsk does not find any error.

If you system has same problem after running chkdsk, reboot your system back into recovery console.

Run chkdsk /r to locate bad sectors and retrieve data.

Bad or Unreadable Hard Drive-

If critical data structures, like file system, boot loader, and MBR (Master Boot Record) of your Windows XP, are corrupt, you need to format the hard drive and reinstall operating system to fix the issue.

Although, formatting can fix most of such errors with your Windows computer, but also removes all the data from hard drive and puts you in need of Windows Data recovery.

Recovery is potential through advanced and powerful third-party tools, known as windows data recovery software. They are competent enough to systematically scan entire hard drive and extract as much data as possible from it.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most efficient and indigenous utility to ensure absolute recovery in all data loss situations. The software works well with Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000. It supports recovery from NTFS5, NTFS, FAT32, VFAT, FAT16, and FAT12 file system partitions.

have bought one mp3/mp4 player from china. It had 2 GB memory and it had new version of firmware. Due to some error in mp3 player, I format it. Then when I checked memory space, I found that it has only 109 MB. I don’t know why mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format. Anyone else having the same problem. Please help me.
Thank you.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Hey you are using fake mp3/mp4 player and that’s why you are getting such type of problem. You must check before buying whether it is working properly or not. Most of the people have such type of problem, who have take china made electronic device. If your mp3/mp4 player has warranty then you have toreplace it with new one to get rid out of this problem.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Have you tried to format it using Command prompt. If not then use following steps to do this.
1.First connect your mp3/mp4 player to computer.
2.Now open Command prompt.
3.Now type “format _ ” (Instead of “_” use drive letter of your mp3/mp4 player )
That’s it.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
You have to use TestDisk utility to fix this problem. TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
I able to fix this problem by using SD Formatter 2.0. I think you also use it to get rid out of this problem. This software formats all SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards using a formatting program that complies with official SD memory card requirements. SD formatting provides quick and easy access to your SD memory card. SD or SDHC memory card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with official SD memory card requirements and optimum performance may not be experienced.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
I also had the same problem. Then as per your answer I used TestDisk utility to fix this problem and it really works for me. But one problem is there. I able to recover only 1gb from it. This means that now my mp3/mp4 player shows only 1gb free space instead of 2gb. Can anyone tell me how do I get back to 2gb. Is there any kind of software available.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Hey I also have the same model and same problem. I also format my mp3 player and then it shows only 178mb free space. I tried various method to fix this problem, but nothing happened. Then after frustrating I replace my mp3/mp4 player with new one and I able to fix this problem. I think you also replace your mp3/mp4 player with new one to get rid out of this problem.
