7 Best “New” Web Browsers With A Chance Against Chrome & Firefox

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/introE.jpg" alt="new web browsers" />Many people swear by either href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-chrome">Google Chrome or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firefox">Mozilla Firefox, but there are a myriad of other new web browsers that are definitely worth a look. Truly, neither Chrome nor Firefox are perfect. There are some features we would like to see built into Firefox (that meanwhile, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/addons-to-get-the-best-features-of-the-top-browsers-in-firefox/">we’ll just have to satisfy with addons), and others that we still wonder why Chrome hasn’t bothered to include such as  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/functionality-firefoxs-live-bookmarks-google-chrome/">RSS feed detection (which meanwhile can also be satisfied href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbfjd">with an add-on).

A lot of the following browsers ship with addons that you would otherwise have to obtain yourself, so they may make for a fresh breath of air.

href="http://www.chromium.org/Home">Chromium [Cross-Platform]

Since Google Chrome is a fork of the open-source browser project, Chromium, anything that applies to Chromium can be applied to Google Chrome, while not everything that pertains to Chrome can be applied to Chromium.

For instance, to illustrate the very first point, both Chromium and Google Chrome offer Search Suggest, which presents you with a list of suggestions as you pause when you’re typing in your search query. An area where the two browsers differ is in crash reporting or usage statistics; by default, sending these reports is opt-in and disabled in Chromium. Chromium also comes without a PDF Viewer and Adobe Flash Player, but all is not lost since you can actually utilize any of the href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore?hl=en-US&category=ext">extensions in Chrome’s Web Store in Chromium.

Acquiring this browser takes a bit more than just finding the Download section and clicking on the installer link. You can follow these instructions href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_to_install_chrome_and_chromium_side-by-side.php">here or you can use the href="http://crportable.sourceforge.net/">unofficial, portable version on SourceForge.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot01.jpg" border="0" alt="new web browsers" width="580" height="622" />

Chromium-Based Browsers: SRWare Iron & RockMelt

href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php">SRWare Iron [Cross-Platform]

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot02.jpg" border="0" alt="latest web browsers" width="542" height="512" />

If you like Google Chrome’s speed, but are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-steps-to-regain-your-privacy-in-google-chrome/">concerned with privacy, SRWare’s Iron web browser might be for you. Since Google Chrome and SRWare Iron are based on the open source Chromium project, you’ll spot few differences. On the internal side of course, Iron doesn’t include Chrome’s information-collecting features, such as href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php">URL-tracker, error reporting, etc. Aside from those internal differences, Iron works pretty much the way you’re used to in Chrome. Chrome extensions and themes will also work on Iron, just like Chromium.

To check out the portable version and the regular install in Windows, head to the href="http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php">website. Mac users can download Iron href="http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33434/srware-iron">here, while Linux users can go to href="http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2109">this thread.

href="http://www.rockmelt.com/">RockMelt 2 [Windows + Mac] + iPhone Sync

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot04.jpg" border="0" alt="latest web browsers" width="547" height="497" />

If you’re big on sharing interesting news on Facebook, Twitter and/or email, RockMelt (in beta) might be worth a look. It’s similar to Flock, the social browser derived from Mozilla Firefox, in that href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rockmelt-ultimate-social-media-browser-enters-public-beta/">it targets the die-hard social media addict so it integrates notifications from sites like Facebook and Twitter. It comes with a few tricks of its own though, the iPhone app [ href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rockmelt/id416256246?mt=8&ls=1">iTunes link], which syncs your items marked to read later, as well as bookmarks.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot03.jpg" border="0" alt="latest web browsers" width="324" height="484" />

Though RockMelt doesn’t support Google Sync, you can sync your RockMelt browsers across PCs and Macs with your Facebook account.

href="http://www.wyzo.com/">Wyzo 3 [Windows + Mac]

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot06.jpg" border="0" alt="what new web browsers are there" width="554" height="612" />

A few things have changed since we href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wyzo-beta-the-web-browser-for-downloaders/">last reviewed Mozilla-based Wyzo, but it remains the most useful browser for the frequent downloader since it comes with FireDownload, a download accelerator, and FireTorrent, an extension that turns this browser into a torrent client. One new feature in Wyzo 3 is the inclusion of SkipScreen, the extension that allows you to skip waiting screens from popular file-sharing sites, such as MegaUpload and the like, while it no longer seems to ship with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/embed-3d-photo-gallery-blog-cooliris/">CoolIris and FireGestures.

href="http://maxthon.com/">Maxthon 3.0 [Windows/Android]

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot07.jpg" border="0" alt="what new web browsers are there" width="513" height="513" />

We href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/taking-the-maxthon-internet-browser-for-a-test-drive/">first took a look at Maxthon in 2008, where we noted that Maxthon began as an extension of Internet Explorer and so, it uses the same rendering engine. These days, Maxthon supports both the Trident rendering engine (which is the layout engine for IE, so you can still view IE-optimized websites) as well as Webkit, which powers Google Chrome and Safari and renders Maxthon’s Ultra Mode, loading pages almost instantly.

In addition to its dual display engines, Maxthon also has a sea of nice features, such as mouse gestures, bookmark sync with Maxthon Passport, speed dial, popup blocker, online notepad, RSS reader, instant translator, screen capturing tools, and resource sniffer, which detects all video, image, and audio links on a website. The href="http://maxthon.com/maxthon-mobile">Android app also has a few of these features, namely the RSS reader, speed dial, download manager and gestures.

href="http://www.opera.com/browser/">Opera 11 [Cross-Platform]

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot09.jpg" border="0" alt="what new web browsers are there" width="539" height="550" />

In addition to extensions, Opera contains a few more impressive features that make it stand out from the crowd. With Opera, you don’t need another desktop mail program, torrent client, or web server, as Opera offers these services. Since Opera also offers browsers for mobile phones and tablets, you can use Opera Link to sync your bookmarks, speed dial, custom searches, etc. Opera users also get a free space on the My Opera community, that they can use as a blog or to share files.

One additional cool feature that we should mention is Tab Stack, which is one among href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-tabs-opera-pro/">many other tab management features Opera has, and can help you not only group tabs, but also streamline your workflow.

href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home">Internet Explorer 9 [Windows 7/Vista]

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ScreenShot08.jpg" border="0" alt="new web browsers" width="530" height="491" />

IE9 is heaps better than its predecessors, and sports a more minimalistic look, but perhaps the biggest feature it has over other browsers is, without a doubt, its integration with the Windows OS. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/exploring-internet-explorer-9-beta/">Jumplists definitely take advantage of sites like Twitter and Facebook, which behave more like applications, and make some functions more seamless.

    4 Ways To Protect Yourself Against Keyloggers

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keyloggerthumb.png" alt="what is a keylogger" />Keyloggers are one of the most well known and feared security threats on computers today. They’re feared because they are generally hard to detect, and because the damage they do is often meant to extend beyond the infected computer. A virus may seek to crash a computer, ruin its hard drive, or take some files, but a keylogger is usually employed to take personal information, be it a password or credit card number.

    There are many ways to protect against keyloggers, however, and ensure that you don’t become a victim of identify theft or have to deal with any lesser hassle, like a hijacked World of Warcraft account. While no defense is perfect, these steps improve your chances.

    Use A Firewall

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/zonealarm1.jpg" alt="what is a keylogger" width="580" height="455" />

    In most instances, a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/keylogger/">keylogger has to transmit its information to a third party in order for it to do any harm. This means sending information out of your computer via the Internet. Although a very close examination of your network usage might reveal a keylogger, you can’t count on that as a means of monitoring for them. The bandwidth taken up by recorded keystrokes is virtually undetectable in a broadband world.

    A href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-firewalls-windows/">firewall is a great defense against keyloggers because it will monitor your computer’s activity more closely than you ever could. Upon detecting that a program is attempting to send data out, the firewall will ask for permission or display a warning. Some firewall software, such as ZoneAlarm, provides you with the option of shutting down all inbound and outbound data completely.

    The use of a firewall can’t guarantee protection, but it’s an important line of defense that should catch most threats.

    Install A Password Manager

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keylogger21.png" alt="keylogger tips" width="570" height="273" />

    Keyloggers work well because they’re simple. They just take raw information – keystrokes – and ship them out of your computer to a third party. The information they send doesn’t have to take up much bandwidth, and it can be logged quickly without any apparent performance impact on the target PC. Most users infected with a keylogger will never know it unless an account or credit card is hijacked.

    One weakness of keyloggers, however, is the fact that you can’t keylog what isn’t typed. That’s where automatic form filling becomes useful. If a password is filled in automatically by your PC, without any keystrokes, the password will only be susceptible to keyloggers the very first time you type it.

    All the major web browsers have this feature baked in and will ask to store your password information the first time you type it. Some computers ship with software that offers this functionality throughout the entire operating system. If you don’t have this software already installed, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/password-manager-battle-royale-top/">check out our post on the best free password managers.

    Keep Your Software Updated

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/keylogger3.png" alt="what is a keylogger" width="531" height="194" />

    Being proactive about your computer’s security is always a good idea, and the most important part of a proactive defense is keeping software updated. Keyloggers, like most variants of modern malware, can exploit software vulnerabilities to inject themselves into your system without you, and in some cases your antivirus, being any the wiser. Adobe Flash, for example, has href="http://www.f-secure.com/vulnerabilities/SA200900917">had issues with remote code execution exploits in the past. A malicious website could use such an exploit to install a keylogger on your PC.

    Exploits are being found in software all of the time. Even Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are routinely patched to take care of critical exploits. If you don’t update your system you will be leaving it open to all sorts of attacks that could otherwise have been avoided. Yes, making sure all of your software is up to date can be a pain, but consider the alternative. This is an easy, proactive remedy that will stop most attacks before they can start.

    Change Your Passwords Frequently

    For most users, the measures above will provide enough protection to ward off any keylogger woes, but there always seems to be people who have their passwords stolen even though they did everything right.

    This probably is the fault of exploits that have yet to be identified or patched, and it can also sometimes occur because of social engineering – it’s not unheard of for a Twitter account to be hacked and begin tweeting out links to malicious sites and files. Every smart geek is vigilant, but nobody is perfect.

    Changing your passwords frequently will help minimize the potential damage of a keylogging attack. Your password may be stolen, but it would be uncommon for it to be stolen and used immediately, unless that keylogger was targeted directly at you (in which case you may have bigger problems than keylogging!). If you change your password every two weeks, your stolen information will no longer be useful.

    Conclusion

    These methods will help protect against keyloggers by decreasing their opportunity to infect your PC and decreasing the information they can steal if one does happen to be installed. Although you can never protect yourself 100%, taking these steps will decrease your risk.

    Anti-Virus Software Fighting Back Against Computer Infections

    Many computer users adopt the ‘it will never happen to me’ policy, but there are a number of computer viruses out there just waiting to infect and destroy the information contained on their hard-drive. This is why companies invented anti-virus software, which is a program that automatically helps to detect the presence of viruses on a computer or in a file before it is opened.

    Click to Free Download Best Spyware Removal Software

    Anyone who spends a considerable amount of time surfing the internet, visiting unfamiliar websites or downloading photographs is at a higher risk for computer viruses than those who do not. Computer viruses are typically attached to word processing documents, computer programs and images which, if downloaded, may instantly affect the computer’s performance.

    If a computer virus infects a computer, the owner may immediately lose everything in their computer and may be forced to use the factory restore disk. This CD, which is accompanied by most new computers, will restore the computer to it’s original factory settings.

    Anti-virus software is quite affordable considering it’s wealth of use. Without it, computer users are at constant risk for computer viruses. Anti-virus software can generally be found at any computer manufacturer’s website, retail store’s electronic department or online at many retailers selling computers.

    Click to Free Download Best Spyware Removal Software

    Anyone who suspects that their computer may be infected with a virus should refrain from sending any e-mail messages or uploading photos to family or friends. Otherwise, the virus may spread to infect their computers as well.

    Anti-virus software is available most commonly on a CD-Rom, but may also be downloaded from some manufacturers. By double clicking on the software, the anti-virus program will begin to perform a scan of your entire computer. As it progresses, it will give you an update on any potential located viruses or files that may be of concern. In addition, some anti-virus software will allow users to scan a single file before opening it. For example, if a computer user were to download an image but wanted to run a virus scan on it prior to opening the file, he/she could click on the anti-virus software and direct it toward the file in question. The anti-virus program would scan the file for potential viruses and will post the results immediately on the computer screen. This will allow the computer user to know which files are safe and which are not.

    In today’s world, anti-virus software is to computers as Tylenol is to headaches. It’s both a preventative approach and a cure for certain ailments affecting a computer. If a user does not have anti-virus software pre-installed into their computer, it is recommended that they purchase a program immediately before logging on to the internet.

    Registry Cleaner – Protects Your Computer Against the Problems You Are Not Even Aware Of !

    Safeguard Your PC

    A registry cleaner protects your PC from the undesirable processes. Apart from the viruses, there may be quite a few processes running in the computer memory without your knowledge. The results are far from being desirable. Your computer may slow down. Error messages may appear all of a sudden and your anti virus fails to identify the viruses behind them.

    Here are quite a few of the problems against which you may protect your PC by using a registry cleaner.

    Bugs & Errors – A registry cleaner fixes the bugs and the errors. It makes your PC run faster and smoother. Moreover, the programs running in the background will also be taken care of. Most of the time, it slows down the PC. It’s proves to be irritating and you may not even be aware what has actually made the PC slow down.

    Quite a few of the bugs might have crept into the PC from the programs that you might have installed. You may opt for uninstallation. But both, installing and uninstalling may introduce new programs to the computer memory. To your surprise, your PC may be running programs that should not be there anymore. Sometimes, you may discover that files are corrupted during uninstallations. Besides, your PC may restart on its own. The solution to all these problems and more lies in using a registry cleaner.

    Avoid a Crash – It’s easier to avoid a crash in case you use a registry cleaner. You may lose all the data all of a sudden. And what if you don’t even have the backup in another computer or a storage device? A registry cleaner may save you from all the trouble!

    Keep a Check over Programs that Download from the Internet – There are Adwares, Spywares and Spambots, besides quite a few other programs that may download themselves from the internet into your PC. The spywares monitor your PCs activity. Adwares result into unwanted pop-ups and spam mails. These programs go unchecked by an antivirus. But a registry cleaner not only fixes the errors caused by these programs, but even does not allow them to enter your PC in the first place.

    It explains that an anti-virus is not enough to make your PC function properly. A registry cleaner is a must. It keeps your PC problem free! Besides, you should purchase a registry cleaner rather than downloading it free of any charge from the internet. A purchased registry cleaner is more likely to serve your requirements better as you may inquire into all the details before making the payment.

    There are many registry cleaners software on the internet that you should avoid. Choosing the right product can be a daunting task. This is where Top Registry Authority can help you to make the right choice. All you have to do is to visit the website:

    4 – Step Defense Against Spy ware and Parasites

    Everyone knows about spyware, parasites and other malware. I won’t review them all here — but what you may NOT know bout is a PROVEN, FOUR-STEP defense that will virtually guarantee that your computer is protected in a practical, simple manner.

    Let me spoil the secret before you even read the article!

    The steps are:

    1. Install a good anti-virus program.

    2. Install Spybot Search and Destroy.

    3. Install Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

    4. Keep everything up to date!

    Can it really be that simple? YES!!!

    How do I know? This is exactly what I have done to clean and disinfect over 300 computers at two different companies – - keeping them operating parasite-free for the past two years! Here are the details…

    1. Install a Good Anti-Virus Program.

    If you are running any computer without a good anti-virus program these days — you’re committing cyber-suicide!

    It doesn’t really matter which one you use. There is such stiff competition between companies to keep up — every one is pretty much about the same — or at least — it will be very quickly. So don’t sweat it. Use ANY one you want — but just be sure to use one!

    (I personally use McAfee, and receive virus-laden emails every couple of days that are automatically deleted.)

    2. Install Spybot Search and Destroy.

    I don’t generally recommend products, but make the exception in this case because this program REALLY WORKS — and is FREE! (I DO encourage you to make a donation!)

    Another tip: DO USE the “Tea Timer” continuous protection. It is turned off by default — so when you see the prompt to enable it — please do! It is much easier to PREVENT a problem, than to try and cure it later.

    3. Install Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

    Many people believe that just because they have ONE particular anti-spyware program, that they are covered.

    DEFINITELY NOT! Spyware is one case where you absolutely MUST use both a belt and suspenders.

    You will find that there are many bits of malware that Spybot S&D catches, but Microsoft doesn’t — and vice versa.

    Also, one product may catch the parasite, but only the other one can successfully remove it.

    Microsoft Anti-Spyware is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/

    If you have a LEGAL copy of Windows, the download is FREE! (But be warned that they WILL CHECK your windows, and you must download and install the checking too. No big worries.)

    4. Keep Everything Up To Date!

    Last, but certainly not least, you absolutely MUST keep your operating system, anti-virus and anti-spyware products updated.

    Microsoft releases patches and updates to all currently supported versions of Windows almost weekly. Use the “Automatic Update” feature to make sure you get them, or check manually at least once a week through Internet Explorer’s menu option.

    Don’t forget about keeping the other products updated also. In previous versions of Spybot Search and Destroy, you
    needed to do this manually.

    Removal and Cleaning

    Ideally, these four steps should be done just after the system is first set up and before it ever hits the Internet — but if this isn’t the case, don’t be surprised at all the viruses, parasites and malware you may find.

    If this is the case, my recommended removal and cleansing method is a ‘top-down’ approach — from the simplest and
    safest method — down to the more difficult and dangerous.

    (Legal: Everything in this article is “At Your Own Risk”.)

    1. See if the application has a menu entry or an “Uninstall” or “Remove” option anywhere. Most legitimate software (but ones that may carry parasites as extra baggage) may be able to be removed (at least partially) this way.

    2. Under the Windows Control Panel, select the “Add/Remove Programs” applet — look for, and “Uninstall” anything that may be related to the malware. Be aware that many “innocent looking” applications carry spyware, malware and parasites. Remove anything in any way resembling problems exposed through either of the anti-spyware programs.

    3. Use the removal features of the anti-virus and anti-spyware applications. I recommend doing this AFTER the previous two steps, because sometimes the applications will be removed more ‘cleanly’ by reversing their original installation process.

    Note: After performing any step, be sure to repeat the scan with the anti-virus and/or anti-spyware program to see if the problem was really fixed. You should continue trying to remove the problem until the scan comes up clean. This may also mean rebooting your computer between removal attempts.

    Spybot Search and Destroy will prompt you to reboot and attempt removal during the reboot if it encounters a particularly stubborn bug.

    4. In some cases, no amount of scanning/cleaning/rebooting can remove the malware. In this case, you have two options:

    a) Boot the computer into “Safe Mode” and re-attempt the Spybot and Microsoft scan/removal process. (To get your computer to boot into Safe Mode — press just after restart — and select “Safe Mode” from the boot menu.) This may allow you to remove applications that are run automatically at start-up, but that protect themselves by preventing the file from being deleted while the bug is running.

    b) Boot the computer into Safe Mode, Run “Regedit” or “Regedt32″ and try to clean the parasite by searching the registry for strings that the anti-virus programs have found. Note: I won’t provide detailed instructions on registry editing — because if you don’t know how to do it already– you’d probably better not try! It can mess you up.
