class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0_foodie.jpg" alt="" />Food makes the world go round. Whether dining out a few times a week, exploring new recipes, or simply taking pictures of your food and sharing it with others (which is called foodtography), there are a lot of people out there who love enjoying a good meal. If you consider yourself a foodie, you probably take advantage of a few key apps to document everything you’ve eaten.
Even apps like
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/foursquare/">Foursquare and
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/search/?cx=009717636731598800244%3Aqhe4rh7wuxs&cof=FORID%3A11&q=instagram&sa=">Instagram, which weren’t necessarily intended for sharing just food items, have been getting used that way for quite some time. In Instagram’s case, I would argue that foodtography played a major role in why the app became so popular amongst iPhone users.
So what’s next for foodies? In this article, I’m going to show you some more apps which should help you locate places and meals you’ll like, as well as document those meals you’ve eaten and enjoyed.
The first iPhone app I’d like to share with you is called Ness. Ness is a visually appealing food search engine that enables you to discover places you’ll love based on the types of foods that you like to eat. Just tell Ness what you like – and what you don’t – and it will get smarter over time, recommending to you new places to try.
Ness is also social. The app shows you the places your Facebook and Foursquare friends have rated, reviewed, or checked into, and allows you to share the things you like with them. Ness’ Likeness Engine incorporates your ratings/reviews and recommendations from friends to suggest new places that meet your tastes.
When you start using the app, Ness asks that you rate 10 restaurants that you’ve visited in the past. It will use this information to learn about your tastes when you rate your dining experiences and follow friends whose opinions influence your decisions. Results are tailor-made just for you.
If you’re into recommendations, Alfred is another great app for you foodies out there. Alfred is your personal food butler/robot who recommends places based on your favorites. When you select a few of your favorite places for lunch, dinner, nightlife, coffee, brunch, etc. you will begin to receive custom results in the form of restaurants you will enjoy.
Connect Alfred with your Facebook account and you will be able to select the friends that you are out with. Alfred will then “tune” his recommendations to match everyone’s taste. The app is pretty intuitive and you do interact with Alfred as if he’s a real person. He asks you questions and even lets you ask your friends where they think you should grab a bite to eat.
If you’re not interested in going out to eat, you should check out the Foodily app for iPhone. Foodily (
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/foodily-learn-to-cook-recipes-for-friends/">directory listing) gives you daily recipe inspirations from your friends, food experts, and people you follow. It even lets you utilize your phone’s camera to pair your own food pictures with recipes from across the web.
Foodily has a recipe news feed that updates every time you open the app, giving you new recipe ideas, photos of what your friends have made, and search options to help you discover meals to make.
If you are eating out, you can take a picture at a restaurant, type a few ingredients into Foodily’s search bar, and get a similar recipe for you to cook at home. The photo functionality is also great for pairing a dish you’ve personally made with the recipe you found on a food blog, from a magazine, or wherever.
The Eatery is another great food-related application that takes advantage of your phone’s camera. With this app, you can snap photos of your food and The Eatery will give you a second opinion on the healthiness of your meal. The idea behind the app is that documenting the meals you eat is the first step to building awareness around healthy eating.
The Eatery will help you discover how well you eat from week to week, where you eat your best and worst meals, and what factors into potentially bad habits. Personally I think it’s pretty cool how information is presented to you upon simply snapping pictures of your food (which you probably do anyway).
As a bonus, I also recommend you check out
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rate-share-discover-meals-restaurants-forkly-iphone/">Forkly, which I covered a couple of months back. When you’re done experimenting with these foodie apps, come back and tell us what you think!
One of the things I like best about Android is how customizable it is. The Market is full of themes you can apply to different launchers, and if your Android device is
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/root-android-phone-superoneclick-2/">rooted, you can even apply themes to the system as a whole, changing the appearance of the notification bar, buttons, and more. But it can often be annoying to sift through the myriad themes just to find the few good ones. That’s where this post, and
href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.n3xgenapps.theme.manager">N3xGen Theme Manager, comes in.
N3xGen Theme Manager is a free app that provides an easy, comfortable way to browse and filter lots of themes. Let’s look at how it works, and also at a few of the better free Android themes out there.
The app bills itself as a “theme market’, and accordingly, it’s styled to look very similar to the new Market app. At the main screen, you can see the most recent themes, each with its price clearly marked (so you don’t have to waste time on paid themes if you just want the free ones). Along the bottom is a toolbar that lets you filter the view to see only ADW themes, themes for LauncherPro, Android system themes, and Go! Launcher themes.
System Themes
Let’s focus on the System Themes category, which contains themes for the T-Mobile Theme Chooser. While you won’t find Theme Chooser on the Market, it is a part of
href="http://www.cyanogenmod.com/features/themes-support">CyanogenMod, a popular alternative ROM supporting many devices. While filtering by system themes, you can swipe left to reveal other useful filters and zoom in on just the themes you want to see:
Above you can see what the screen looks like mid-swipe, when switching between “All Themes” to Categories. You can also filter by developer, and by free or paid themes.
Some Awesome Themes
Now that we’ve seen how the app works, let’s look at some of the beautiful themes you can discover with it. Here’s what a single-theme view looks like:
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image3.png" alt="android themes" width="300" height="500"/>
/> This is for
href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.r3dx.theme.lunarui.black&feature=search_result">LunarUI Black. Here’s what the theme itself looks like:
This one is called
href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kgill7.theme.NakedSimplicityB&feature=search_result">Naked Simplicity. Not everything you see above is a part of the theme – it mainly changes the notification bar, which ends up looking something like this:
Finally, let’s look at one of the paid themes, just to see what they’re like. This one’s called
href="https://market.android.com/details?id=sh.pra.chroma&feature=search_result">Chroma 2.0 and it costs $1.29. There is also
href="https://market.android.com/details?id=sh.pra.chromab&feature=more_from_developer">Chroma (basic), which is free. The paid version looks like this:
This will take you to the Market, where you can buy or install the theme just like you would any other app.
Once the theme installs, run Theme Chooser. Again, this application is not available on the Market, but it is available with CyanogenMod and other
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-custom-rom-android/">custom ROMs. Theme Chooser looks like this:
You can swipe left and right to scroll between your existing themes. Once you found the one you wish to use, simply hit Apply. And… that’s it. There is no step 2. The end result looks like this:
I’m not sure yet if Chroma 2.0 is the theme for me (it looked better in the screenshots, to be honest). Do you have a suggestion for a better free Android theme? Let me know in the comments!
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/commandlinefu-icon.png" alt="linux command line" />Browse an assortment of amazingly useful commands. Whether you’re an veteran system admin or a command-line neophyte striving to discover more,
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com">CommandLineFu is a vote-driven collection of commands that serves up thousands of ideas you should have thought of but didn’t.
Some see the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/command-line/">command line as Linux’s weak point, the ultimate symbol of a system lacking ease of use. Others know the command line as one of Linux’s best features, giving learned users quick access to features most computer users don’t even know exist. There’s a reason even Mac OS X comes with a full-featured terminal. CommandLineFu is an encyclopedia of exactly those features. A database featuring over 8,000 unique commands, this site can seem overwhelming at first – just like the command line itself. Dig in though, and you will wonder just how you used a computer without the command line.
Sorry, Windows users – the majority of these commands only work on Linux. Some work on Mac OS X as well.
Browsing
Head over to
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com">CommandLineFu to get started. You will immediately see the commands submitted most recently.
You can “grep” (read: search) the archive, if you want, or simply click “All Time Greats” to see the most popular commands. Or if you prefer, simply browse the massive tag cloud that makes up this sites right sidebar.
A Few Highlight Commands
Experienced command line users will immediately find things they are interested in, but what about everyone else? Here is a quick list of my discoveries from this site.
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/71/serve-current-directory-tree-at-httphostname8000">Quick, Temporary Web Server
Want to quickly share a file with someone? Set up your own web server in a few keystrokes with this handy command:
python -m SimpleHTTPServer
Just like that, your current directory will be shared. Here’s what it looks like in a web browser:
Naturally, you’re going to need to set up your router properly if you want to share with someone outside your current network. A dedicated IP or a service like
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-home-network-dyndns/">DynDNS will also be needed. Still, for local file sharing, it’s hard to beat the above command: it’s quick and easy. It worked for me on Ubuntu and OS X.
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/13/run-the-last-command-as-root">Run Preview Command As Sudo
This one’s probably only useful for users of Ubuntu, or other systems utilizing
href="http://xkcd.com/149/">sudo. It allows you to re-run the last command you executed as sudo, perfect if you forgot to add that vital preface.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/commandlinefu-sudo.png" alt="linux command line tools" width="580" height="178" />
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/3386/check-your-unread-gmail-from-the-command-line">See Your Unread Emails
Want a quick rundown of your unread emails? this simple command can do the trick, provided your email client of choice is Gmail.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/commandlinefu-gmail.png" alt="linux command line tools" width="580" height="233" />
It worked for me on Ubuntu and OS X; Linux users should make sure “curl” is installed.
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/1556/currently-mounted-filesystems-in-nice-layout">See Your Mounted Devices
A mounted device is any storage drive plugged into your system and working. Need to see a full list of them? Simple.

href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/1713/watch-star-wars-via-telnet">Watch A Text Version of StarWars
Okay, this one’s not useful. It is, however, awesome. Watch a text-only version of Star Wars, complete with ASCII animated characters:
Do you want to know every time a new awesome command is discovered? CommandLineFu offers three different Twitter and RSS feeds for just that purpose. Which one you use depends on how frequently you want updates;
href="http://www.commandlinefu.com/site/faq">check them all out here.
Conclusion
This site is awesome. Exploring it can teach you a great deal about not only the command line but also about computers in general.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/0_ipadnews.jpg" alt="best news apps for ipad" />One thing I’m sure I don’t have to tell you is that news is changing. Everything from the way information is reported down to the way it’s consumed has undergone a change in recent years, and it has led to a more personalized news experience that takes place in real-time.
The fact that anybody in the world can go on a network like Twitter and report news has a lot to do with this. If I see news happening outside my window (which is highly likely in New York City), I can act as a first respondent of sorts and break the story with a tweet.
Other key advancements in news consumption have been the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ipad/">iPad and, more importantly, the news-related apps that were designed specifically for this device. Some of the best news apps let you pull in data from your social networks, as well as pieces of news from other key outlets. Let’s take a look at some of the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-ipad-apps">best iPad apps for viewing news.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/1_flud.jpg" alt="best news apps for ipad" width="362" height="482" />
FLUD is a really cool news app for iPad that keeps you up-to-date. The app is customized to your tastes as you can follow all of your favorite blogs and news sites. You can share content via Twitter, Facebook, and email as well as bookmark stories using Instapaper and Read It Later all in one place. Also, anything you or anyone else bookmarks is promoted to the “FLUD feed”.
Like all of the apps listed here, FLUD has a beautiful user interface. You can search for RSS feeds inside the app and add them with a single touch, connect to Google Reader, mark articles you love, organize feeds into categories, and more.
Flipboard needs no introduction. This app was named Apple’s iPad App of the Year and one of TIME’s top 50 innovations of 2010. Flipboard offers you a simple way to flip through news, photos, videos, and social updates in a magazine like layout that is easy to scan. You can customize your Flipboard with sections created from your favorite news, people, blogs, topics, etc.
Be sure to also check out

Taptu, which
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/taptu-multiplatform-mobile-news-reader-curator-ios-android/">we’ve covered before, is a social news feed reader that lets you add your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the content from your favorite websites and blogs (via RSS feeds or Twitter) into beautiful streams for easy navigating. Like the other news apps on this list, Taptu also lets you share news with your friends via Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and email, as well as save items to Instapaper for later viewing.
Pulse is also up there among the most best news apps for the iPad, having been named to the App Store Hall of Fame. Pulse takes your favorite websites and and transforms them into a colorful and interactive mosaic. You can tap on an article to see a clean view of the news story. Pulse also lets you save stories for reading later across all platforms and syncs them with Instapaper, Read it Later, and Evernote. Sharing a story is a simple two-tap process.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/5_zite.jpg" alt="best news apps for ipad" width="484" height="360" />
Zite,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">covered back in March, is a little different from its predecessors on this list because it comes right out and tells you it’s a personalized magazine. Zite automatically learns what you like and gets smarter as you use it. It gives you personalized news, articles, blog posts, videos, and other content from a variety of mainstream and niche publications and websites.
You can also sync it with your Twitter or Google Reader accounts to further improve the “learning” process.
Conclusion
All of these iPad apps have something great to offer and you can get addicted to any one of them. As of now they are all free, so give them a try and let us know which one is your favorite. I have a feeling your iPad is about to replace some of the newspapers you’re used to reading, as well as cut deeply into your TV news watching time.
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/data.jpg?54167" alt="graphical news"/>Strangely, while watching news has stayed on the normal course, reading news has taken varied (and interesting) routes. There has been no better medium than the web to explore news in all its different avatars. RSS feeds and news tickers have become old-hat when you have more interactive apps coming in. Thanks to information overload, visualizing data has come into the picture…literally.
Data visualization starts with the idea of giving you a graphical tool to wrap all that information around your head. In the case of news, it ends with a really cool and interesting way to see news a bit differently.
Some of the data visualization based apps that focus on news may be experimental. It’s difficult to say whether graphical news apps will take off or not; but for now they remain as offbeat ways to browse and read news.
It’s called a typographic news explorer. The interesting graphical news app is meant to break you out of the usual way you browse for news – from the top down. This one fosters creativity. It all starts with a doodle. You get a blank canvas and a search box. Search for a news item and then just doodle around to get all interlinked stories. As you doodle on, the news items branch out and you can go on a wild, chaotic journey through all the information that’s out there. Doodling also gets you the original source of the news. It’s difficult to explain this app in words – try it out.
To describe the site in their own words – Every hour, 10×10 collects the 100 words and pictures that matter most on a global scale, and presents them as a single image, taken to encapsulate that moment in time.
If that went over your head, just launch the app and play around with the little thumbnails. At the backend, the app has scanned the RSS feeds of several leading international news sources (ABC, BBC, Reuters etc.) and culled the most important keywords using a special algorithm. The top 100 words are chosen along with their images. This human history goes into the 10×10 grid. You can check it by the hour and also go back into history with the cool timeline.
We have featured this cool graphical news app
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/oursignalcom/">before in our directory of
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/news/">news apps. It’s like a news aggregator with a difference – a visual one. Just like any other news aggregator, it plucks the most popular news stories from Digg, Reddit, Delicious, Yahoo! Buzz and Hacker News and displays them in one place. The more popular the story the bigger it appears on the homepage. Clicking on the square takes you to the source. You can also preview it in the bottom frame. With a registration and log-in, you can set about customizing the ways news squares will be displayed like choosing a theme and entering your own choice of feeds. The results are not always perfect but you can try it out. It’s also quite similar to
href="http://newsmap.jp/">NewsMap which is a Google News aggregator.
Newser makes news reading more fun by taking news stories from around the world and showing them as thumbnails on a grid. Clicking on them takes you to the news stories. This is not really offbeat, but nonetheless a visual departure from the normal way of scanning headlines. We had taken a previous look at Newser when we mentioned

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro2.jpg" alt="logo art" />It seems like there’s a growing number of users that have given GIMP, Inkscape and other open-source software a chance. In many cases, being liberated from the grips of commercial software does not mean professional-grade graphics cannot be created. With a lot of patience, skill and enthusiasm, many users have demonstrated time and again that
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/photoshop">Photoshop really isn’t the only tool capable of producing high-quality visual art.
To prove my point, I’ve scoured the web and DeviantArt in search of great graphics. The result was absolutely exhilarating. Not only did I find many magnificent pieces made entirely with open-source software, I also was surprised to find a growing community of professional visual artists dedicated to spreading the word about GIMP, Inkscape, MyPaint, etc. using them exclusively to produce their artworks and even extending them to produce improved painting packages like
href="http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/">GIMP Paint Studio. There were too numerous works worthy of mention here, but including all of them would have probably made this too long of a post. So here are some stunning pieces flowing around deviantArt.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro2.jpg" alt="logo art" />It seems like there’s a growing number of users that have given GIMP, Inkscape and other open-source software a chance.
So here are some stunning pieces flowing around deviantArt.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-youtube-video-converters/">YouTube. As the web’s most popular video sharing website, YouTube often has a vast array of weird and wonderful YouTube channels to subscribe to.
So sit back, make sure your Flash player is up-to-date and enjoy some of the funniest and most entertaining collections of
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/18-free-ways-to-download-any-video-off-the-internet/">videos on the web.
Calling all
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-idiot-guide-photoshop">Photoshop users, if you’ve not seen the “You Suck At Photoshop” series from MyDamnChannel then you’ll probably wet yourself when you do. The series of 20 videos follows the troubled Donnie as he teaches you how to not suck at Photoshop whilst his life gradually falls apart.
With lashings of dark humour and the occasional star (Flight of the Conchords actress
class="vt-p" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1102891/">Kristen Schaal features in the channel’s comedy soap opera “Horrible People”) it’s always worth checking out the latest uploads.
Stuart Ashen’s regular video reviews have earned him a loyal following, with nearly 100,000 subscribers to his channel. The plucky Brit takes it upon himself to review the worst pieces of technology around including fake

Stuart’s die-hard fanbase has grown to the point where his subscribers willingly spend their own money and send him crap bits of tech to review. The channel is updated fairly regularly, providing you with new bits of tat to gawp and laugh at.
For anyone with a remote interest in Japan,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/web-resources-learn-japanese-online-free/">Japanese culture and the far-eastern way of living. The channel follows American comedian
class="vt-p" href="http://www.tokyocooney.com/HereIsJapan/">Kevin Cooney as he works, plays and attempts to survive in Tokyo.
Topics include how to get a haircut in Japan, the many flavours of Japanese ice cream and the day-to-day goings on of an American in the land of the rising sun. Each video is boosted by Kevin’s naturally funny narrative, and more updates are due soon (thanks to overwhelming demand on his YouTube profile).
Virtual home to British comedian Adam Buxton (as the name suggests), the channel provides somewhat geeky comedy twists on a lot of popular themes. Examples include a mash-up of Steve Jobs’
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/jailbreaking-for-noobs/">iPad keynote speech with Star Wars (I know) and clever voice-overs of TV shows and adverts.
A master of cutting up video and audio only to arrange it for comedic effect, Cassetteboy sets about attacking the films, radio and TV shows we know and love. A lot of his material is based on British television, but the time and effort put in to each can be appreciated by anyone.
Some of his best work took months to complete (check out Cassetteboy vs. The Apprentice above) so updates can take a while, but they’re always worth the wait.
Inspired by Dali? Mentally unstable? Incredibly talented? Well at least the latter is true about this freelance animator’s YouTube channel. With his own brand of internet-insanity, Cyriak’s
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/animatedexplanations-how-to-animations/">animations often leave you with a sense of “how did he do that then?” as he takes the mundane, adds a repetitive electro soundtrack and turns up the wackiness to 11.
Dancing cows that turn into spiders? Is it art? Who cares, these things take months to make and minutes to appreciate. Some of the very best animations and CGI on YouTube, bar none.
Many gamers out there will be familiar with

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/buying-brand-new-games-online-with-incredible-discounts/">video-games reviewers and general all-round funny guys. With weekly updates that include games reviews, features and blasts from the past this YouTube channel will suit anyone with even a relaxed interest in the world of gaming.
The team answer questions (in video format) and regularly upload play-through videos of upcoming releases, demos and other games. If you like games mixed up with humour, then Giant Bomb gets you.
The BBC Comedy YouTube channel is a regularly updated portal for the whole world to enjoy (unlike many of the BBC’s other services,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/access-bbc-iplayer-uk/">which are UK-specific) that features web-exclusive content that’s bound to make you laugh.
With coverage of many comedy festivals, snippets from BBC programming and the latest and greatest stand-up acts from around the world there’s something for everyone.
The only band to appear on the list, these guys made internet history with the Here It Goes Again video which featured some very tightly choreographed treadmill work. Since then they seem to have spent as much time coming up with viral videos as they have writing music.
Even if you’re not a fan of the music the videos will make you smile, and it’s quite easy to appreciate the immense amount of time and effort goes into each new release.
If you’re interested in science, how things work and even attempting your own home-based
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-research-weird-science-claims/">science experiments then this one’s for you. The channel focuses on experimentation, on subjects such as how to make your own glow sticks (and how they work, of course) to plunging your hand into liquid nitrogen (wouldn’t recommend it).
As well as genuinely fascinating science, there’s information on where to get many of the chemicals used in the experiments so
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/unleash-the-mad-scientist-within-you/">you can join in too if you’re brave enough. Just don’t do anything stupid.
