ClamWin, An Open-Source Anti-Virus Solution For Your PC [Windows]

clamwin antivirusNew online threats emerge every day, attacking corporations and consumers alike. These potentials threats aren’t disguised just as links or emails anymore.  They could be coming for your personal information in all sorts of ways. And we’re making it easy for hackers when we post personal stuff on Facebook and Twitter.

There are a lot of things you can do to protect yourself. You can educate yourself on new potential threats, read on how to keep your computer secure, and what security software doesn’t protect, and obtain the best tools for the job, whether they are anti-virus programs or extensions.

Here, I’ll be taking a look at ClamWin, an open-source anti-virus program that’s been around for a while. Should you get it? Read on to find out.

Getting ClamWin

ClamWin is an anti-virus program based on the only open-source anti-virus solution in the market, Clam AV, which is a toolkit initially designed for UNIX.

As you can probably tell by the name, ClamWin is available as a download for Windows machines only. You can download the installer here, which is almost 40MB, or you can also try the portable app for anti-virus protection on the go.

If you’re wondering about which version to go with, I’m using the portable version 0.97.3 for this review. This latest release has improved bytecode signature matching, in addition to the reigning features that characterize this anti-virus – virus scanner, scanning scheduler, automatic virus database updates, and integration with Windows Explorer and Microsoft Outlook.

If you’re using the installer, be aware that the Ask toolbar might be offered during the installation. Make sure you read what the checkboxes are offering before you click Next. I didn’t see any such thing during the portable application “installation”.

Launching ClamWin

When you first launch ClamWin, you’ll likely need to download the built-in database of viruses.
clamwin antivirus
Doing so will just take a few seconds if you’re connected to the Internet.

Once ClamWin has finished updating its Database, you can see the main window where you’ll have the options to set your preferences, update your virus definition database once again, scan programs currently running in memory and finally, scan specific files or directories.

Running Memory Scan

Selecting this option allows you to scan the programs that are currently running in memory. If you’re as paranoid as this author, t’s probably a good idea to update your virus definition database before running your scans.

Unless you’re running Photoshop, Mozilla Firefox, and many other resource hogs, this scan should be completed in a couple of minutes. Mine took just over 3 minutes and scanned 28 processes in memory.

Running File Or Directory Scan

In the main window, there will be a directory browser where you can select a whole drive (e.g. your C drive), specific folder or even a file to scan.
clamwin
Depending on what you chose, this scan can obviously last a while. When I was running a scan for my D drive, ClamWin was also working really hard, using almost 109 MB of RAM. Not that it’s a bad sign, but it’s probably a good idea not to multi-task on your PC while you let a scan run through an entire disk drive. After a scan is finished, you can see the report right after, save it or access it in the main window menu.

If a virus is detected during the scan, there are three options you can choose from in the Preferences: Quarantine it, report it, or remove it.
clamwin
If you’re particular about your scans, you can also filter files to be included or excluded from the scan in the Preferences. You can also limit a file size to scan or not, and also whether to extract files from zipped files in the Preferences window.

If you installed ClamWin instead of using the portable version, you’ll be able to schedule scans right in the Preferences window, increasing security for your PC.
clamwin antivirus
If you’re using the portable version and wish to schedule scans, you could always use Windows Task Schedulerand clamscan.exe which should be under ClamWinPortable/App/clamwin/bin.

ClamWin shines for being an open-source anti-virus program with file and directory scanners, scanner scheduler, automatic downloads of virus databases and more. It does lack a real-time scanner, which could be a big con, but for basic protection and its price, it’s a great product to have on your PC security arsenal.

New Malware Hides From Anti-Virus Software In Your BIOS [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/biosthumb1.jpg" alt="" />Malware researchers and malware programmers are in constant competition, the latter hunting for new ways to hide, the former sniffing out those methods. BIOS, the basic operating system pre-installed on computer motherboards, is the perfect place to hide, but has been thought generally safe from intrusion.

A new piece of nasty known as Trojan.Mebromi has been found capable of re-flashing a computer’s motherboard BIOS in order to insert new code which, in turn, corrupts a computer’s master boot record. In doing so, this Trojan hides in a place where href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/anti-virus/">anti-virus programs can’t look and executes its payload in an environment where they don’t exist.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/BIOS1.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="299" />

That’s not to say removing this threat would be impossible, but it is difficult, as pointed out by security researcher Marco Giuliani. “Developing an antivirus utility able to clean the BIOS code is a challenge, because it needs to be totally error-proof, to avoid rendering the system unbootable at all.

There is some good news. The current incarnation of this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-realtime-malware-protection-removal-tools/">malware can’t run if it isn’t given escalated privileges, so UAC should keep you safe if you use it. The Trojan also can’t infect computers running href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/difference-64bit-32bit-operating-system/">64-bit operating systems, either. Finally, Award BIOS is the only target.

Mebromi is not the first malware to exploit the BIOS, but it is the first to be caught in the wild for over a decade.  I wouldn’t worry about a rash of BIOS infections just yet, however. This malware targets a security flaw discovered in Award BIOS five years ago, but never used and apparently never patched. If the developers finally fix that flaw, the window of opportunity will be closed – for now, at least.

JottiQ – Scan Suspicious Files Using Multiple Anti-Virus Apps At The Same Time

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0-jottiq-intro.png" alt="multiple antivirus scanner" width="248" height="203" />How much “stuff” do you really download on the Internet? Whether you’re downloading movies ( href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-movies-illegally-makeuseof-polls/">we know you do!), href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-websites-check-music-releases/">new music, software, or participating in some other activity that may or may not violate the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-digital-media-copyright-act/">Digital Media Copyright Act, you are potentially exposing your computer to corrupt files, malware, and viruses. Even if you only use your computer once a month and you only visit a single website you still face this risk.

There are a lot of different ways to scan the files you download to see if they are clean, but none quite like JottiQ.  JottiQ takes advantage of Jotti’s href="http://virusscan.jotti.org/en">online malware scanner, which uses multiple popular antivirus programs to scan your files, without having to download or install any of them.

id="more-66710">

What Is JottiQ?

As I stated above, href="http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=p2p3vctnmg0uata8a0d4kp60m5&topic=24663">JottiQ is a tool that makes it more convenient to use Jotti’s malware scan, which is an online service optimized for one-by-one scanning of files you do not trust. If you’re wary of a file you downloaded because you have a strange feeling about the site it came from or you’re just curious, JottiQ is a good way to relieve that stress.

So is JottiQ a virus scanner? No, not really.

JottiQ is merely the go-between that relays the files you wish to have scanned to the online Jotti’s malware scan service. JottiQ should be considered to be an investigative tool and as such will not offer any options to delete or otherwise affect the files you scan.

JottiQ will scan the heck out of your files though, utilizing popular anti-virus apps like Avast, AVG, AntiVir, and over a dozen other programs. If your recently downloaded files are infected with something, you’ll know about it.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-03-01_0019.png" alt="multiple antivirus scanner" width="290" height="294" />

The application allows you to build a queue of files needing scanning. It also uses Jotti’s internal cache to speed up scans, lists scanners with detections at the top of the list in red, allows you to open scan results in your browser, and is integrated with right-click functionality so you can just click a file and scan it immediately.

How To Start Using JottiQ

To start using JottiQ, head over to href="http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=p2p3vctnmg0uata8a0d4kp60m5&topic=24663">this page and download the JottiQ v1.0.3 installer. Run the installer and you’ll be able to install the core components of the app. If you’re missing any applications required to run JottiQ, like I was, you will be notified and JottiQ can download and install them for you.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-28_2343.png" alt="multiple antivirus" width="503" height="388" />

The installation process doesn’t take very long at all and is very easy to go through. Once you’re all done, you can start dragging files into JottiQ’s main window to queue them up for the multiple antivirus scanners. Or you can just right-click a file to scan it, if you installed context menu support (default setting).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-28_2343_001.png" alt="multiple antivirus" width="459" height="219" />

JottiQ will give you an initial scan result to let you know if it thinks your file is safe or not, even before you get the actual results from the various programs scanning the file.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-28_2344.png" alt="multiple antivirus" width="501" height="387" />

Off to the right of the app, you’ll see the list of all the anti-virus programs being used to run the scans, as well as what the individual results were for each program. If your file does happen to get a hit on one or more of the programs listed, you should be able to install that specific application for removal.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-03-01_0115.png" alt="multiple antivirus scanner" width="580" height="350" />

That’s all there is to it. JottiQ offers a light-weight, simple way to check your files without installing a lot of programs to figure out what will remove a potential threat. While I’d recommend you install an anti-virus program to begin with, JottiQ should help you out in case one of your downloads has you worrying.

What do you think of JottiQ?
