Whether you’re downloading movies (
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-movies-illegally-makeuseof-polls/">we know you do!),
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-websites-check-music-releases/">new music, software, or participating in some other activity that may or may not violate the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-digital-media-copyright-act/">Digital Media Copyright Act, you are potentially exposing your computer to corrupt files, malware, and viruses. Even if you only use your computer once a month and you only visit a single website you still face this risk.
There are a lot of different ways to scan the files you download to see if they are clean, but none quite like JottiQ. JottiQ takes advantage of Jotti’s href="http://virusscan.jotti.org/en">online malware scanner, which uses multiple popular antivirus programs to scan your files, without having to download or install any of them.
id="more-66710">
As I stated above, href="http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=p2p3vctnmg0uata8a0d4kp60m5&topic=24663">JottiQ is a tool that makes it more convenient to use Jotti’s malware scan, which is an online service optimized for one-by-one scanning of files you do not trust. If you’re wary of a file you downloaded because you have a strange feeling about the site it came from or you’re just curious, JottiQ is a good way to relieve that stress.
So is JottiQ a virus scanner? No, not really.
JottiQ is merely the go-between that relays the files you wish to have scanned to the online Jotti’s malware scan service. JottiQ should be considered to be an investigative tool and as such will not offer any options to delete or otherwise affect the files you scan.
JottiQ will scan the heck out of your files though, utilizing popular anti-virus apps like Avast, AVG, AntiVir, and over a dozen other programs. If your recently downloaded files are infected with something, you’ll know about it.
style="text-align: center;">The application allows you to build a queue of files needing scanning. It also uses Jotti’s internal cache to speed up scans, lists scanners with detections at the top of the list in red, allows you to open scan results in your browser, and is integrated with right-click functionality so you can just click a file and scan it immediately.
To start using JottiQ, head over to href="http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=p2p3vctnmg0uata8a0d4kp60m5&topic=24663">this page and download the JottiQ v1.0.3 installer. Run the installer and you’ll be able to install the core components of the app. If you’re missing any applications required to run JottiQ, like I was, you will be notified and JottiQ can download and install them for you.
style="text-align: center;">The installation process doesn’t take very long at all and is very easy to go through. Once you’re all done, you can start dragging files into JottiQ’s main window to queue them up for the multiple antivirus scanners. Or you can just right-click a file to scan it, if you installed context menu support (default setting).
style="text-align: center;">JottiQ will give you an initial scan result to let you know if it thinks your file is safe or not, even before you get the actual results from the various programs scanning the file.
style="text-align: center;">Off to the right of the app, you’ll see the list of all the anti-virus programs being used to run the scans, as well as what the individual results were for each program. If your file does happen to get a hit on one or more of the programs listed, you should be able to install that specific application for removal.
style="text-align: center;">That’s all there is to it. JottiQ offers a light-weight, simple way to check your files without installing a lot of programs to figure out what will remove a potential threat. While I’d recommend you install an anti-virus program to begin with, JottiQ should help you out in case one of your downloads has you worrying.
What do you think of JottiQ?

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-sources-follow-computer-virus-news-alerts/">computer virus in the past. If not, then lucky you – but you can never be too safe, especially
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-security-tools-you-absolutely-must-have/">if you’re running Windows.
Online free anti virus scan apps have been around for a while, and whilst they’re no match for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-programs-to-keep-your-computer-secure/">standalone software they certainly have their uses. Perhaps you’re on an unfamiliar PC that’s acting a little strange? Or maybe your existing software has been disabled, and you’ve frantically restarted in Safe Mode looking for a solution.
Below you will find 4 websites to check and verify that your PC is virus free, and 3 to upload and check individual files to help prevent an outbreak. Let the scanning begin!
id="more-56641">
This free scanner will work in all major browsers, and requires a quick addon to be installed before you can scan. Simply visit the site, click Scan Now, agree to the installation and accept the EULA.
Your PC will then be scanned in record time to let you know whether or not you’ve got any nasty viruses, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-get-rid-of-a-trojan-horse-virus-that-wont-go-away/">trojans or other malware hiding in your PC’s memory. It won’t scan your whole hard drive, but if class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-quick-fixes-to-make-your-windows-computer-faster/">your PC is acting up and you suspect malicious software is to blame, QuickScan should find it.
Unfortunately ActiveScan will only work with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-reasons-why-firefox-is-safer-than-internet-explorer/">Internet Explorer or Firefox, although Panda recommends you install the IE Tab Classic extension for compatability if you’re running class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-chrome-extensions-quick-clever-navigation/">Chrome.
For a quick scan of running processes choose Quick Scan or if you’d prefer to delve a little deeper you can opt for a Full Scan. Once you’ve chosen click Scan now and you’ll be prompted to download either an extension (if you’re running Firefox) or an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-installing-an-activex-control-can-open-the-door-to-hackers/">ActiveX control (if Internet Explorer’s your thing).
The scanner will update its definitions and then run the scan of your choice before delivering the good or bad news.
Housecall is completely browser independent, which means you can access it from any web browser. It achieves this by packaging the scanner into a small executable file which when run scans your PC for any signs of malware.
There are two versions to choose from – class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows">32bit and 64bit – and you should make your choice based on your operating system. In case you’re wondering what version you’re running, open Control Panel in your Start menu and choose System. Once you’ve downloaded the file, run it and the definitions will be updated for you.
After you’ve accepted the EULA click Scan Now to see what’s lurking on your PC.
Utilising the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-for-java-application-examples/">Java platform to check your PC for nasties, F-Secure should run in any browser provided you’ve got Java installed and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/what-is-javascript-how-works/">JavaScript enabled. To launch the scanner you must accept the license terms by checking the box and then click Run Check.
You’ll need to authorise the Java applet to run before the scanner will launch in a separate window. You’re then free to choose between Quick Scan, Full Scan and a customized My Scan (where you choose which bits of your hard drive to check).
Once you’ve chosen the scanner will update its definitions (it’ll take a few minutes, but stick with it) and your PC will be checked for problems.
The VirScan service allows you to upload a file (up to 20MB) and check it against more than 30 other sets of definitions from the web’s finest anti-virus solutions.
You can upload class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-top-3-file-compression-extraction-softwares/">.ZIP and .RAR files with a maximum of 20 compressed items, and even give the archive a password of “infected” or “virus”. Simply click Choose File followed by Upload and your file will be scanned, showing you the results in your browser.
With support for both file upload and URL checking VirusTotal is a popular online virus scanner (so check the server load before you submit). Not only can you upload via the web form on the homepage, but you can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/sendtodropbox-email-files-to-your-dropbox/">email your files (again, 20MB maximum filesize) to scan@virustotal.com with “SCAN” in the subject field.
You will then receive your results via email once your scan has been complete. Much like VirScan, VirusTotal uses a database of definitions assembled from all over the web.
Operating much in the same way as the previous two engines, Jotti allows you to upload a file of 20MB or less for submission to a selection of the web’s anti-virus engines.
You should know the drill by now – click Choose File and then Submit file to receive your results.
Online solutions are a great way to protect your data but these services are still no match for installing a dedicated virus scanner on your machine. There’s plenty of completely free solutions out there, some of which have adverts and the odd pop-up and others that just sit there and do their job.
We’ve got class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-best-antivirus-programs/">a list of the 10 best right here, and it’s also worth watching out for spyware with programs like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-and-delete-spyware-with-malwarebytes-windows-only/">Malwarebytes and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/spyware-terminator-%E2%80%93-free-real-time-spyware-protection/">Spyware Terminator. No virus scanner is completely immune to attack, and the best thing to use whilst browsing the web is your common sense.
Have any of these services helped you out in the past? Ever tackled a particularly vicious virus? Got any security tips? Sound off in the comments.

Early morning when Jennifer opened her laptop to check her mails, she found her desktop working very slow. There were several pop-ups which wouldn’t stop to erupt again and again even after Jennifer pressed the close button. The problem didn’t eradicate even after restarting the system. Later it was found that various mails were being copied from her inbox and being sent to various recipients in her address book. All this was indicative towards the fact that Jennifer’s desktop was infected by a virus. Her mistake was twofold. One, she had not installed an Anti Virus software in her system, and two, she had downloaded an unverified program via a mail sent in her inbox.
What we have read above was the tip of the iceberg, some viruses are very serious and they can corrupt and delete important files on your system. Many programs fail running its operations. Your desktop may crash.
There are several new viruses coming in the network every day. It may be difficult to identify a virus unless it itself prompts the user about itself, which is very rare; or if the user has a good Anti Virus System installed in his/her system, then of course the particular Anti Virus system prompts it. But again, having an Anti Virus System alone is not enough. As stated earlier, due to the entry of new viruses everyday, it is very essential to keep on updating the current Anti Virus system in one’s system because the present one will only be able to identify the previously created viruses, and not the daily propagating new ones.
Therefore, to prevent all of this and more, it is a prerequisite to install an Anti Virus System in one’s desktop. It is a very simple easy process. But of course it needs to be chosen carefully, because some Anti Virus systems tend to slow down the speed of your system if not properly used or not updated. They even get attacked by external viruses in case of not updating the Anti Virus system from time to time. To make choices better, there are a vast number of websites which offer you the choices of Best Free Anti Virus Software. There are downloads suitable for your pocket, and you can search for Cheap Anti Virus Software from a pool of choices. Not only this, there are FREE Anti Virus Software Download which can be downloaded on a trial basis, or for a fixed time period. So go ahead, and save your PC from getting infected!

With the number of Windows 7 users is increasing, I think it is essential to discuss what useful Anti-Virus softwares we can install in Windows 7. So here I will show you a some Anti-Virus softwares which are compatible with Windows 7.
Our Recommendation
Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus and it can work really well. Most importantly, it won’t slow down your computer.
Note: Generally speaking, software that works on Windows Vista should work fine on Windows 7 as well, except a software that installs low-level system components, such as an Anti-Virus, firewalls, or similar. These packages are usually designed to run on specific versions of Windows.
Windows AntiVirus Detection
After you first install Windows 7, you’ll get a popup balloon message by saying that you need to find an antivirus program online.
Once you’ve installed a compatible package, you will find the balloon message will go away and you’ll see a message in the Action Center telling you that “Virus protection” is On:
Actually, the packages should also hook into the Windows 7 update mechanism and let you know when your virus definitions are out of date.
Note: On to the list, I took a screenshot of the Action Center screen proving that each package installs and is recognized properly by Windows 7, but I also ran through a couple of quick tests for each package.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
AVG Free is one of the most popular anti-virus softwares now. Fortunately, it is not only work perfectly under Windows 7, but it’s on the list of a small number of software packages that are officially compatible per Microsoft.
You’ll notice that it also offers Anti-Spyware protection, and Windows recommends that you only run a single Anti-Spyware application:
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition
Avira is a popular freeware antivirus with a number of the regulars in favor of it.
Note: This software works without any issues that I could find during my quick testing.
Norton AntiVirus 2009
There is no doubt Norton AntiVirus 2009 works just fine. They are also on Microsoft’s list of compatible software for Windows 7.
Note: Since it also provides anti-spyware protection, maybe you would like to disable Windows Defender for performance reasons.
Avast! AntiVirus Home
Also this one works just fine. You’ll find that this package provides Anti-Spyware protection as well.
Microsoft Windows Live OneCare:
What surprise me is that this one doesn’t even install under Windows 7, just giving you a big fat error message (I guess Microsoft still has some coordination problems.).
In fact, OneCare is going to be discontinued in June 2009, with Microsoft switching to offering a free product instead.
Kapersky Anti-Virus 2009
I list it here not only it works well but also it is preferred by a number of computer users.
McAfee VirusScan:
Actually it is reported to be not working by multiple readers.
Also Working Per Reader Comments
These packages are reported to be working by the readers in the comments below:
-PCGuard Anti-Virus from Virgina Media Broadband
-ESET Nod32 Anti-Virus
-Microsoft Forefront Client Security (Enterprise)
Important Note
Just because all of these packages install and run doesn’t mean they are necessarily “supported” by the vendors.
If you are looking for an Anti-Virus package, this list can help you much.
