Apple Launches iTunes Match In 19 New Countries [News]

Apple has created a stir with their new cloud based music service known as iTunes Match. When it was first announced, there was a general consensus that it had the potential to be amazing. For iPhone owners, the prospect of taking all their music to the Cloud and having it matched with a high quality version direct from Apple’s servers was a winning proposition (especially if those songs were acquired from less than legal channels).

The program finally launched, and we here at MakeUseOf offered a handy guide for getting started. However, upon launch it was not available in all the countries people wanted to use it. Now, Apple is working to rectify that situation by launching the service in 19 new countries. They are mainly focusing on Latin America, the Baltic States and the Netherlands.

The full list of new countries are as follows – Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.

iTunes Match is now available in a total of 37 countries. Apple is obviously trying to expand their service, which costs $24.99 per year, to all kinds of new markets. If it is not available where you live, don’t fret, because you can assume Apple is going to do everything in their power to get it there.

Apple Updates iBook iOS Application With Night Reading Mode & Other New Features [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/iBooks.jpg" alt="" />iBooks has received a nice little update recently that adds a bunch of new features that users were clamoring for. The first major feature is the addition of a night-time reading mode. This makes the background black and the text white. This makes reading less strenuous when in a dark area.

The next addition in this update is the inclusion of a full screen mode. This takes all of the background stuff on your iOS device off the screen and allows you to better focus on only what you are reading. This is a great addition with the new notification center in iOS 5 because there is lot more going on the screen. Going into full screen mode makes it easier to ignore all that.

Apple also added a lot of new fonts, so if you have a particular typeface you like to read in, there is a good chance it is there. Apple added fonts such as Athelas, Charter, Iowa, and Seravek. I prefer to stick with the standard font, but if these fonts are your cup of tea, I’m sure you will love this update.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ibooksnight.png" alt="" width="309" height="452" />

The last features are improvements to the annotation palate and some new covers for books available in the public domain. These changes are more minor, but enjoyable none the less.

Get the update from the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8">iTunes App Store.

Search The Apple And iTunes Store From Your Menubar With Tunesque

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/tunesque-3.png" alt="search itunes"/>In my eyes, software developers can often be the saviors of the world, especially when they develop and release little free Mac gems that save us power users several laborious clicks or taps to get something done. This is the case with a new Apple related search application called href="http://tunesque.afkstudio.com/">Tunesque.

Developed by MTA, Tunesque locates keyword related items in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/itunes-store/">iTunes Music Store and the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-tips-apple-mac-app-store/">Apple Mac store, and displays results in a single display. An app like this simply makes sense and you wonder why Apple didn’t develop it itself.

Quickly Search iTunes

Tunesque resides in your menubar where you click on its icon and enter a search query in the text field. After clicking the return key, Tunesque presents the results of search items in all categories of Apple’s online stores.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Tunesque-4.png" alt="search itunes" width="480" height="580"/>

For example, a search for “Steve Jobs” reveals related songs, TV shows, iOS apps, e-books, podcasts, audiobooks, and iTunes University downloads.

So you can easily see how Tunesque saves you the trouble of opening the bulky iTunes application, and/or the sometimes the buggy App Store app, and then having to make several clicks in order to perform searches.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/tunesque-2.png" alt="itunes search for music on your computer" width="493" height="231"/>

Incidentally, I also like how Tunesque doesn’t do intuitive searching—that is, start performing searches, Google style, as you type a term. That approach seems to sometimes complicate or slightly slow down the search process.

Search Results

As you might expect from looking at the user interface of Tunesque, when you move your cursor over an item, you get an instant preview of that item, including an image and description along with the listed price. Album descriptions, however, for some reason, don’t show up.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Tunesque-1.jpg" alt="itunes search for music on your computer" width="580" height="295" />

Clicking on an item of course will link you to its respective place in the iTunes Store or App Store.

If the drop-down interface of Tunesque seems a little too cluttered with results, you can simply narrow them using to specified keyboard shortcut.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/tunesque-21.png" alt="itunes search for music on your computer" width="493" height="231"/>

Tunesque will also maintain your most recent search queries, so when you return to the application you don’t have to retype the search term again.

In my tests, the search results in Tunesque matched most of the results I got when I did the same keyword search in the iTunes Store. Results may vary for particular searches, but Tunesque is certainly a great place to get started.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Screen-Shot-2011-11-12-at-2.51.29-PM.png" alt="have itunes search for music on computer" width="580" height="318"/>

Customized Searches

The developer also had the foresight to enable users to customize search results. In Tunesque Preferences you can disable store categories (like audiobooks, iTunes U, and podcasts) you’re not particularly interested in.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/screenshot1560.png" alt="have itunes search for music on computer" width="467" height="433"/>

And on top of that, Tunesque searches in a local store of your choice, from the U.S. to the Ukraine and beyond.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/screenshot1561.png" alt="have itunes search for music on computer" width="463" height="434"/>

And for users who don’t like the dark side, you can change up the color scheme to Light.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/screenshot1563.png" alt="search itunes" width="495" height="409"/>

Tunesque may not be for those who like to click and browse around Apple’s respective stores, but it is certainly a welcome solution for those of us who like to quickly search itunes with a lot less clicking.

Tunesque can be downloaded free from the href="http://tunesque.afkstudio.com/">MTA web site or the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunesque/id462203645?mt=12">Apple Mac Store. It does however require your Mac to be running Mac OS X Lion—10.7 or later.

Let us know what you think of Tunesque. Will it be a regular log-in item in your menu bar?

Apple is Offering Free Replacement For 1st Generation iPod Nano [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ipod-nano5.png" alt="" />As rare as it is for Apple to publicly admit a malfunction, this one is too big to overlook. According to Apple, the batteries of some first generation iPod nanos may overheat and become a safety risk. While this is a rare occurrence, Apple has decided not to take risks this time. If you own a first gen iPod nano, check out Apple’s href="http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/">replacement program.

The iPods in question are ones that were manufactured between September 2005 and December 2006, and they are all traced back to a single supplier which apparently produced faulty batteries. To help you decide whether you own the right iPod nano, you can check if it has a plastic black or white front and a silver metal back. If it does, you’re holding a 1st gen Nano.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ipod-nano-serial.png" alt="ipod-nano-serial" width="469" height="431" border="0" />

If you think you own one of the faulty devices, you can use Apple’s wizard to enter its serial number and see whether you should send it back for a new one. The program is only offered in 20 countries, and you’d need to choose your country before you can enter your serial number. If you are eligible, you will receive your new device approximately 6 weeks after Apple receives your faulty Nano. Note that if your iPod is engraved, the replacement unit will not have the engraving.

Don’t forget to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-your-ipod-with-sharepod/">back up your iPod fully before sending it out!

Apple Forced To Replace Frayed MagSafe Power Cords [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/apple-logosilver.jpg" alt="" />Apple has come up against a class action lawsuit. They don’t believe they are at fault, but they’ve decided to settle anyway. Any old school Mac owners who have the original MagSafe power cords, and have had it fray on them, can now get a free replacement or some money. This is great news if you are stuck with a broken charger. Now you don’t have to spend a penny to get a new one.

To file a claim you simply have to head over to your local Apple store, or Apple authorized repair center with your damaged charger cable and they will issue a replacement for free. Thankfully, Apple is making the process nice and easy, so you won’t have to go through with mailing anything to get a new one.

Users have until March 21st, 2012 to file a monetary claim, or December 31st, 2012 to get a replacement cable. If you choose to the monetary route, you will need to go to  href="https://www.adaptersettlement.com/">adaptersettlement.com and register.

There is a catch though. Apple reserves the right to reject your cable if it shows signs of damage that is not caused by this manufacturing defect. They will only replace it if it shows signs of “strain relief damage” which they define as “fraying, melting, straining, sparking, weakening, discoloration, bubbling, overheating and/or separation of the Adapter’s strain reliefs.”

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Strain_relief_cable.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="195" />

If you have one of these cables, then take it to a local Apple store and get your free replacement before it’s too late.

Apple Updates iOS GarageBand App With iPhone Support [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/garageband_icon-300x300.png" alt="" />Apple is keeping busy updating their mobile applications, and now they are bringing a new version of their popular music creation program href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785?mt=8">GarageBand. For starters, this update adds support for iPhone, which is the biggest change. The app has been available for iPad users for some time now, but for users looking to create music on the iPad’s smaller cousin, they were left out in the cold.

Thankfully, with version 1.1, that is isn’t a problem anymore. They made some minor tweaks to the user interface to make the app compatible with a smaller screen. Since the app is universal, users who have already purchased it on the iPad will now be able to download it free of charge.

In addition to adding iPhone support the new version also brings some improvements. They added some improvements in terms of available time signatures. The app now supports 3/4 and 6/8 signatures.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mzl.iqcukeeb.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

On top of some new signatures, you can also change settings for how you export songs to AAC and AIFF formats, giving further customization to the music making process. For touch instruments, you can now adjust the velocity for a little more fine tuning. The last change is the addition of custom chords for Smart Instruments.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mzl.jspgbafi.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

The updated version is available for $4.99 for new users and free for current owners of the original version in the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785?mt=8"> iTunes app store.  If you decide to get it, let us know in the comments what you think of it.

Apple Officially Announces iPhone 4S – Features, Price & Release Date [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iPhone-logo.gif" alt="" />The conference started off slow, with Apple pretty much talking about how great they are and how much their products sell. Which is all fine and good, but they know why everyone was there – to finally find out all about the new iPhone.

The first big piece of news to come out of the conference is that iOS 5 is releasing across all newer (back to 3GS) Apple devices on October 12th 2011.

The brand new iPhone 4S, which looks just like the iPhone 4 on the outside, has received a major update on the inside. It comes with an A5 processor and is twice as fast as the iPhone 4. It features a dual core graphics chip, making the graphic capabilities up to 7 times better than that of the earlier iPhone. In addition to boosting the raw power, the new device actually gains increased battery life over the iPhone 4. It now has up to 8 hours of talk time.

The 4S also sports a new 8 megapixel camera. The new camera also takes 73% percent brighter pictures, and is one-third faster than the iPhone 4. The new camera also takes full HD 1080P video and has built-in stabilization.

The rumored Siri voice control is in the phone, and it looks to be incredibly powerful. It seems to take voice commands to a whole new level. Siri is a personal assistant living in your iPhone.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iphone5apple2011liveblogkeynote1590.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="399" />

There will be both black and white versions, while the pricing will be 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299 and 64GB for $399. iPhone 4 will be $99 for 8GB and the 8GB 3GS will be free with a contract.

In the US the new iPhone will be on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon and it will also be available in Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and Japan as well. Pre-orders start on October 7th, and the device goes on sale October 14th. On October 28th the device will roll out to 22 more countries.

The 7 Leading YouTube Channels For All Things Apple

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/iphone_youtube_1.jpg" alt="" />Hardly a month goes by that Apple doesn’t release or update a new product or piece of software. Trying to keep up with all the best iOS apps and Apple-related accessories can be a little daunting for even the most devoted Apple fan. In addition to the hundreds of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/mac/">articles and several class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/">PDF guides published here on MakeUseOf, there are also several popular YouTube channels that focus on Apple related hardware, software, and accessories.

Each of these channels has 10,000 or more subscribers, and they each contain well put together productions, useful for both new and experienced Mac users. I’ve selected seven popular channels, but I’m sure I’ve overlooked a few. So if you are a more experienced YouTube viewer, feel free to chime with your recommendations.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/Apple#p/u">Official Apple YouTube Channel

It didn’t dawn on me until I started researching this topic that Apple has its own official YouTube channel. Not surprisingly it has almost 180,000 subscribers, with over six million channel views.

width="580" height="430" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v_gQHtXsLtU?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> width="580" height="430" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/v_gQHtXsLtU?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" />

The channel content consists of Apple’s television commercials, keynote addresses, and online promotional videos. It doesn’t invite comments, nor does it subscribe to other YouTube channels. But it does provide the official showings of its major hardware and software products.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/SoldierKnowsBest">SoldierKnowsBest

The vlogger who goes by the name of Mark (a.k.a Soldier Knows Best) appears to be the leading YouTube channel for reviews of Apple products. At the time of this writing, his channel has upwards of 242,205 subscribers, and similar to Apple’s channel, has nearly six million channel views.

width="580" height="430" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/n6oXZSQeGbk?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> width="580" height="430" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/n6oXZSQeGbk?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" />

Some of his latest videos are about his class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT9N52JINJM">favorite iPhone and iPad apps, class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6oXZSQeGbk">OS X Lion Tips and Tricks, his views about the latest class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u_tUDLMeR4">MacBook Airs, a class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YClPHeM27g4">Mac Mini giveaway, and Apple’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEDYXBnioOM">new Cinema displays. His channel content also features reviews of third-party Apple related products and gadgets.

In addition, he has recently released class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/soldier-knows-best-official/id399855672?mt=8">an iOS app that links to the content on all his channels and provides push notification for when new videos are published, and much more.

Stockpeek launches On Apple App Store – First Finance App To Integrate iPad 2 Smart Cover [News]

class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.ghwwlbgq.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" />Apple’s new class="vt-p" href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC947LL/A?n=ipad2&fnode=MTc0MjU2Mjc&mco=MjM2MDgwNDE">Smart Cover has made waves lately. Of course, when a new product like this launches, developers are quick to try and find a way to make their app work with it.  class="vt-p" href="http://stockwatch.toughturtle.com/">Toughturtle has got out front to bring the first full featured financial app that interacts with the Smart Cover. The Smart Cover wakes up your phone and has several folds in it so you can just peek at the screen.

They have integrated a beautiful ticker that you can quickly peek at by just lifting up the first flap on the case. The name class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stockpeek/id445706583#">Stockpeek is an incredibly fitting name for a product such as this, since you can literally peek at your ticker in the app by simply lifting up the case slightly.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.zjzaibuz.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="360" />

In addition to integrating the Smart Cover, Stockpeek is a fully featured stock app that offers everything you could want in terms of browsing and monitoring your stocks. For any serious trader, the one dollar price tag is very reasonable for what you get. They offer the ability to track an unlimited number of stocks, over 50 worldwide exchanges, full screen charts, and a class="vt-p" href="http://stockwatch.toughturtle.com/iPadVersion/features.php">slew of other features.

Of course, if you don’t have an iPad 2 and Smart cover, the app is still fully functional – just without the peeking feature.

INFOGRAPHIC : Apple University – How Will Apple Cope After Steve Jobs Departs?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/stevejobs.png?54167" alt="" />Many times, a company is driven forward to dizzying heights by the ambition and driven personality of its owner and founder, none more so than Apple.  Steve Jobs created the company and Steve Jobs is the company.

So much so that when Jobs was forced to take time off work to recover from his health issues, things started to look a bit shaky at Apple and many were left wondering what the company would do when Jobs wasn’t around anymore. Many may consider class="vt-p" href="http://jobsisgod.com/jobsisgod/Welcome.html">Jobs to be a God but he isn’t immortal (not even Apple has cracked that one yet!).

This great infographic, made by class="vt-p" href="http://www.onlinecolleges.net">Online College Resource, outlines the rise and fall of Apple’s fortunes, based on Jobs’ leaves of absence.  It also has a nice introduction to Apple University, which was set up to “teach Apple employees how to think like Steve Jobs and make decisions that he would make”. So clearly they are preparing for an Apple-PJ (Post-Jobs).

    Apple Releases iTunes 10.4 With Full Screen Support, Updates iWork [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunesthumb.jpg?54167" alt="" />Just a few days after the introduction of Apple’s latest operating system, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">OS X Lion, the company has revealed a small update to iTunes 10.4. The update’s most obvious addition is a new full screen mode that works alongside Lion’s multi-touch support to provide a smooth, immersive experience. Users can navigate back to the desktop with a three-finger swipe, making for quick navigation between full screen iTunes and other applications.

    The update also finally provides iTunes with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows/">64-bit support, a change that won’t have obvious short-term impact but is necessary for the software’s future development. Cupertino’s developers state that this improvement results in better performance and stability. However, the switch to 64-bit could potentially break class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">some iTunes plugins until they are updated.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunes104.jpg?54167" alt="" width="519" height="265" />

    iWork has received an update to version 6, which provides the software with support for Lion’s new functionality. Resume, Auto Save, and Version features are now a part of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, making it easier for users to switch between documents and recover them should a crash or other error occur.

    You’ll need Lion OS X to receive the full benefit of iTunes 10.4, but the software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or better. The update to iWork version 6 requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or better, but most of the new features will not work without Lion.

    Apple Is Refunding Dissatisfied Final Cut Pro X Customers [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/finalcutpro2_1.png" alt="" />Last week, Apple released a revamped and much cheaper version of its leading video editing program Final Cut Pro. The new version class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-cut-pro/id424389933?mt=12">Final Cut Pro X sells for just $300, down from $1,300 – although the previous version included a suite of other movie production applications. Despite the cheaper price and overhaul of the program however, many veteran users are dissatisfied because Final Cut Pro X does meet their expectations, and it looks as though Apple may be refunding many of those disgruntled customers.

    In the class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/">App Store, customer‘s negative comments (with an average app rating of 3.5 stars) criticized Final Cut Pro X for – among other things – its inability to import FCP 7 projects, not being able to view imported clips on an external video monitor, and missing many other professional features that were part of the older version.

    Apple has class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/">responded to many of the criticisms, but some customers have reported getting a refund for their purchase.  Sample letters like this one have shown up in the Apple class="vt-p" href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3134462?start=75&tstart=0">Final Cut Pro X Support Discussion board.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/finalcutprorefund.png" alt="" />

    Typically, Apple’s refund policy maintains that all sales coming through the Mac and iTunes App Stores are final, but clearly in this case they are making an exception.

    Though Apple will over time work out the kinks and problems with Final Cut Pro X, these problems may signal that Apple needs to reconsider allowing App Store customers to download trial versions of apps in App Store before they are fully purchased. What do you think?

    Is Your MacBook’s Bottom Peeling? Apple Has A Replacement [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/macbookbottomthumb.jpg" alt="" />Is the rubberized bottom of your white unibody class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/11-cool-and-sometimes-useless-things-you-can-do-with-your-macbook/">MacBook beginning to peel? Apparently you’re not alone, as Apple is now offering free replacements, though only for users experiencing this very specific issue.

    The problem, according to Cupertino’s engineers, is that “under certain circumstances, the rubber surface on some MacBooks may separate from the bottom of the system“.  The class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/">MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program has been set up to take care of customers who have fallen victim to this problem.

    MacBooks that have shipped between October 2009 and April 2011 are covered. This is another way of saying “all white unibodies” as Apple didn’t start shipping laptops with a white rubber bottom until the release of the white plastic unibody on October 20, 2009. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/macbook-pro-unboxing-video-sproof/">MacBook Pros are not part of this program, as they have a different bottom.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/macbookbottom1.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="337" />

    A replacement can be ordered online, or can be obtained by setting up an appointment with a Genius at an Apple retail store. If you choose the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-awesome-do-it-yourself-sites/">do-it-yourself option you’ll receive not only a replacement bottom cover, but also a screwdriver sized to fit the screws on the bottom of your Mac and a full set of new replacement screws. Instructions are included.

    If you already had this problem and were forced to pay for a replacement, Apple can issue a refund.

    How To Set Up Home Sharing On Your Apple Mobile Device [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ituneslogo_1.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" />Well, it took Apple long enough, but now you can finally stream the contents of your iTunes library on your Mac or PC to your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod touch, or either versions of your iPad without using a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-your-entire-itunes-library-to-your-iphone-over-the-internet-mac-only/">third party application. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-your-entire-itunes-library-to-your-iphone-over-the-internet-mac-only/">SimplifyMedia was the first to bring iTunes music sharing to users, but the recent iOS 4.3 update includes Home Sharing, which enables you to stream your iTunes library via your home WiFi network.

    Unfortunately though, you still can’t share your library outside of your network using the Home Sharing feature. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/access-media-collection-browser-zumocast/">Zumocast is the application you will need to do that.

    Setting Up Home Sharing

    In order to use Home Sharing, you will need to download and install the latest version of iTunes 10.2 on your Mac or PC, and the latest version of iOS 4.3 on your iOS device (by the way, this latest iOS update can’t be installed on the iPhone 3G).

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" width="544" height="471" />

    Next, in iTunes, open Preferences  > Sharing and enable “Home Sharing over Local Network“. If you have a huge iTunes library you might want to limit the content that is shared so it can be accessed quicker on your remote device. You can also require a password to secure your connection. If you have iTunes running on another Mac or Windows PC you can also share your library to those machines.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_4.png" border="0" alt="sync apple mobile" width="580" height="375" />

    On your iOS 4.3 device, open the Settings app and select iPod in the Settings column. From there you will need to provide your Apple ID and password to activate Home Sharing on the device.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_11.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="579" height="403" />

    Now, with your iTunes running on your networked computer, launch the iPod app on your device and select Library. At the top of the left column, select your iTunes library. If you’re streaming to your iPad or iPod touch, I believe, you will need to open the Videos app to view the movies, TV shows, music videos and video podcasts streaming from your computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_1.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="496" height="96" />

    In your streaming iTunes library, you can switch and navigate between Songs, Artists, Albums, Genres and Composer. See the menu bar at the bottom of the streaming library.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ratetracks.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="546" height="140" />

    Fortunately, you can also rate the streaming music you’re playing your iOS device and it will be updated in the library of your base computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/wakeethernet.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" width="490" height="337" />

    If you’re concerned about not being able to access your networked iTunes library when your computer is asleep, open System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the Wake for Ethernet network access box, so your iTunes library will be available even when your computer is asleep.

    What’s Missing

    Home Sharing is a long overdue feature for iTunes and iOS devices. However, it is still lacking in the bells and whistles that would make it more useful.

    For instance, while Home Sharing streams all your iTunes playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, iTunes U programs, it does not allow you to wirelessly download individual tracks to your iOS device. So say you want to listen to a few podcast episodes on your commute to work without the benefit of a WiFi connection. Well, you will have to either do a wired sync to iTunes in order to get those selected downloads, or you will need to open the iTunes app on your device, search for the podcast episodes you want to hear and manually download them. What a pain. If you’re streaming content from your computer, you should be able to select and download it to your device.

    Despite these drawbacks, let us know how Home Sharing is working for you.
