Apple Releases iTunes 10.4 With Full Screen Support, Updates iWork [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunesthumb.jpg?54167" alt="" />Just a few days after the introduction of Apple’s latest operating system, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">OS X Lion, the company has revealed a small update to iTunes 10.4. The update’s most obvious addition is a new full screen mode that works alongside Lion’s multi-touch support to provide a smooth, immersive experience. Users can navigate back to the desktop with a three-finger swipe, making for quick navigation between full screen iTunes and other applications.

The update also finally provides iTunes with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows/">64-bit support, a change that won’t have obvious short-term impact but is necessary for the software’s future development. Cupertino’s developers state that this improvement results in better performance and stability. However, the switch to 64-bit could potentially break class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">some iTunes plugins until they are updated.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunes104.jpg?54167" alt="" width="519" height="265" />

iWork has received an update to version 6, which provides the software with support for Lion’s new functionality. Resume, Auto Save, and Version features are now a part of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, making it easier for users to switch between documents and recover them should a crash or other error occur.

You’ll need Lion OS X to receive the full benefit of iTunes 10.4, but the software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or better. The update to iWork version 6 requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or better, but most of the new features will not work without Lion.

    Apple Is Refunding Dissatisfied Final Cut Pro X Customers [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/finalcutpro2_1.png" alt="" />Last week, Apple released a revamped and much cheaper version of its leading video editing program Final Cut Pro. The new version class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-cut-pro/id424389933?mt=12">Final Cut Pro X sells for just $300, down from $1,300 – although the previous version included a suite of other movie production applications. Despite the cheaper price and overhaul of the program however, many veteran users are dissatisfied because Final Cut Pro X does meet their expectations, and it looks as though Apple may be refunding many of those disgruntled customers.

    In the class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/">App Store, customer‘s negative comments (with an average app rating of 3.5 stars) criticized Final Cut Pro X for – among other things – its inability to import FCP 7 projects, not being able to view imported clips on an external video monitor, and missing many other professional features that were part of the older version.

    Apple has class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/">responded to many of the criticisms, but some customers have reported getting a refund for their purchase.  Sample letters like this one have shown up in the Apple class="vt-p" href="https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3134462?start=75&tstart=0">Final Cut Pro X Support Discussion board.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/finalcutprorefund.png" alt="" />

    Typically, Apple’s refund policy maintains that all sales coming through the Mac and iTunes App Stores are final, but clearly in this case they are making an exception.

    Though Apple will over time work out the kinks and problems with Final Cut Pro X, these problems may signal that Apple needs to reconsider allowing App Store customers to download trial versions of apps in App Store before they are fully purchased. What do you think?

    Is Your MacBook’s Bottom Peeling? Apple Has A Replacement [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/macbookbottomthumb.jpg" alt="" />Is the rubberized bottom of your white unibody class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/11-cool-and-sometimes-useless-things-you-can-do-with-your-macbook/">MacBook beginning to peel? Apparently you’re not alone, as Apple is now offering free replacements, though only for users experiencing this very specific issue.

    The problem, according to Cupertino’s engineers, is that “under certain circumstances, the rubber surface on some MacBooks may separate from the bottom of the system“.  The class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/">MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program has been set up to take care of customers who have fallen victim to this problem.

    MacBooks that have shipped between October 2009 and April 2011 are covered. This is another way of saying “all white unibodies” as Apple didn’t start shipping laptops with a white rubber bottom until the release of the white plastic unibody on October 20, 2009. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/macbook-pro-unboxing-video-sproof/">MacBook Pros are not part of this program, as they have a different bottom.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/macbookbottom1.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="337" />

    A replacement can be ordered online, or can be obtained by setting up an appointment with a Genius at an Apple retail store. If you choose the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-awesome-do-it-yourself-sites/">do-it-yourself option you’ll receive not only a replacement bottom cover, but also a screwdriver sized to fit the screws on the bottom of your Mac and a full set of new replacement screws. Instructions are included.

    If you already had this problem and were forced to pay for a replacement, Apple can issue a refund.

    How To Set Up Home Sharing On Your Apple Mobile Device [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ituneslogo_1.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" />Well, it took Apple long enough, but now you can finally stream the contents of your iTunes library on your Mac or PC to your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod touch, or either versions of your iPad without using a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-your-entire-itunes-library-to-your-iphone-over-the-internet-mac-only/">third party application. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-your-entire-itunes-library-to-your-iphone-over-the-internet-mac-only/">SimplifyMedia was the first to bring iTunes music sharing to users, but the recent iOS 4.3 update includes Home Sharing, which enables you to stream your iTunes library via your home WiFi network.

    Unfortunately though, you still can’t share your library outside of your network using the Home Sharing feature. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/access-media-collection-browser-zumocast/">Zumocast is the application you will need to do that.

    Setting Up Home Sharing

    In order to use Home Sharing, you will need to download and install the latest version of iTunes 10.2 on your Mac or PC, and the latest version of iOS 4.3 on your iOS device (by the way, this latest iOS update can’t be installed on the iPhone 3G).

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" width="544" height="471" />

    Next, in iTunes, open Preferences  > Sharing and enable “Home Sharing over Local Network“. If you have a huge iTunes library you might want to limit the content that is shared so it can be accessed quicker on your remote device. You can also require a password to secure your connection. If you have iTunes running on another Mac or Windows PC you can also share your library to those machines.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_4.png" border="0" alt="sync apple mobile" width="580" height="375" />

    On your iOS 4.3 device, open the Settings app and select iPod in the Settings column. From there you will need to provide your Apple ID and password to activate Home Sharing on the device.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_11.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="579" height="403" />

    Now, with your iTunes running on your networked computer, launch the iPod app on your device and select Library. At the top of the left column, select your iTunes library. If you’re streaming to your iPad or iPod touch, I believe, you will need to open the Videos app to view the movies, TV shows, music videos and video podcasts streaming from your computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/homesharing_1.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="496" height="96" />

    In your streaming iTunes library, you can switch and navigate between Songs, Artists, Albums, Genres and Composer. See the menu bar at the bottom of the streaming library.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ratetracks.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile" width="546" height="140" />

    Fortunately, you can also rate the streaming music you’re playing your iOS device and it will be updated in the library of your base computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/wakeethernet.png" border="0" alt="itunes apple mobile device" width="490" height="337" />

    If you’re concerned about not being able to access your networked iTunes library when your computer is asleep, open System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the Wake for Ethernet network access box, so your iTunes library will be available even when your computer is asleep.

    What’s Missing

    Home Sharing is a long overdue feature for iTunes and iOS devices. However, it is still lacking in the bells and whistles that would make it more useful.

    For instance, while Home Sharing streams all your iTunes playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, iTunes U programs, it does not allow you to wirelessly download individual tracks to your iOS device. So say you want to listen to a few podcast episodes on your commute to work without the benefit of a WiFi connection. Well, you will have to either do a wired sync to iTunes in order to get those selected downloads, or you will need to open the iTunes app on your device, search for the podcast episodes you want to hear and manually download them. What a pain. If you’re streaming content from your computer, you should be able to select and download it to your device.

    Despite these drawbacks, let us know how Home Sharing is working for you.

    Using Rules To Get Apple Mail Under Control

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/shutterstock_541347131.jpg" />The constant flow of emails is no doubt the bane of many computer users. Emailing is among the fastest forms of communication, but you constantly have to deal with impertinent messages, spam, and online promotions.

    If you’re looking for ways to get your emails under control, Apple’s Mail app features a way to set up rules for what happens to emails when they arrive. Setting up and maintaining some simple rules in Mail can significantly cut down on the amount of time you’re spending shifting through and deleting unwanted emails.

    The following are suggested rules for controlling your mail.

    id="more-63868"> /> However, it’s important that you customize or add rules that apply to the types of emails you receive on a regular basis. Also, see my article on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/five-essential-smart-mailboxes-for-apple-mail-mac/">smart mail folders for suggested ways to get your emails under control.

    Junk Mail

    Apple’s Mail comes with some default settings for junk mail. Open the Mail’s Preferences and click on Junk Mail to review the current settings. I believe the default settings for Junk Mail look like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/JunkMail.png" border="0" alt="JunkMail.png" width="550" height="444" />

    You can simply have junk mail moved to a Junk mailbox which provides a way to double-check those messages to see if they are indeed junk. Sometimes when you register on a website, the registration email notification might be considered junk mail when it first arrives in your mailbox, so you can check your junk mailbox to see if it was sent there.

    If you want more control over your junk mail, you can select “Perform custom actions” (Click the “Advanced to configure” button), which will present you with a set of rules for what gets labeled junk.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Advanced.png" border="0" alt="Advanced.png" width="550" height="444" />

    This is a good example of the type of rules you can configure to control what happens to your emails when they arrive in your box. So now let’s explore another rule that will automatically set designated email as read.

    Mark As Read

    Since I got tired of checking and deleting emails on both my desktop computer and mobile devices, I created what might be considered a pretty extreme rule. It marks all my daily incoming emails as read, unless the sender is in my Address Book. I also make sure that some VIP emails are never marked as read, for example mail from my editors at MUO.

    The rule is set up like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/MarkAsRead.png" border="0" alt="MarkAsRead.png" width="550" height="433" />

    To set up this rule, click on Rules tab in Mail’s preferences. Click the Add Rules button. With the first condition, change “any” to all.

    Next, click on the “Any Recipient” pop-up window and select “Date Received”. In the second set of drop-down conditions, select “Is Less Than,” and in the third, input “1″ days old.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Received.png" />

    Next, click the + button and select “Sender is not in my Address Book.” Now this assumes that your Address Book is maintained with the names and addresses of people, clients, and companies who are most important to you.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/notaddressbook.png" />

    You can also click the + button and add another condition; select “Sender is not in my Previous Recipients,“ which means that messages from senders you have responded to before will not be marked as read.

    For added measure, you can include specific addresses for which you do not want messages marked as read.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/specificaddresses.png" />

    Next, under Perform the following actions: select “Mark as Read” in the pop-up menu.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/MarkasRead-1.png" />

    If you’re accustomed to checking and deleting daily mails, this rule may throw you a bit at first, because essentially all your emails will now be marked as read except the emails that you designated should not be.

    However, you will still want to peruse daily emails though they are marked as read. Here’s how you do that. You can simply check your Inbox and see all incoming messages. You can also create a Smart Mailbox that will capture all your emails for the current day.

    To set this up, select Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox in Mail’s menu bar. Set up the rule this way:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/todaysmessages.png" />

    For additional ideas on automating tasks on Mac computer, check out my free PDF, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">The MUO Guide to Mac Automation.

    Also, let us know about other email rules you use to keep your mailbox under control.

    Which Apple Mobile Device Do You Find Most Useful? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/poll2.png" />Last week, we asked readers “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/site-stock-photos-makeuseof-poll/">Which Is The Best Site For Stock Photos?” and found some interesting results, including the fact that most of our readers like to get stock photos for free.

    With 143 votes tallied, we’ve got the following breakdown: 27% MakeUseOf readers prefer to get stock photos from Flickr; 26% use iStockPhoto.com; 21% like stock photos from Stock.xchng; 6% use Shutterstock.com; 4% like Fotolia.com; 4% use Photobucket.com; while GettyImages.com was used by 3%. The remaining services polled were used by fewer than 2.5% of people each.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    id="more-61580"> /> As you can see, Flickr narrowly beat the paid stock photo options.
