Share Audio & Video With Your Friends When You Check In At Places With Clingle [iPhone & Android]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0_clingle.jpg" alt="check in mobile app" />Do you ever witness interesting things happening whenever you go out? Better yet, are you one of those people who seeks out interesting things? If so, you probably cherish those moments with your friends, especially the ones who were there with you at the time. But how do you share a place with those of your friends that weren’t with you?

Well, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/gps/">geo-location apps sure help. You can use these types of applications to check in wherever you’re at and tag things to share with your friends, filling them in on where you’ve been and giving them a brief inside look at what made it so interesting. Most location-based apps focus on letting you share a photo along with your location at the places you visit, but what if they were to take it a step further?

In this article, I’m going to show you the one geo-location app that allows you to attach audio and video to your check-ins, which should help give you (and your friends) some added value around every check-in that you make from here on out.

What Is Clingle?

href="http://clingle.com/">Clingle is a geo-location app that incorporates multimedia into your check-ins. Like other location-based applications, Clingle utilizes the GPS utility of your mobile device to help you interact with others and share information about the interesting things you see and places you visit.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/1_clingle.jpg" alt="check in mobile app" width="324" height="487" />

Clingle makes capturing and sharing moments a rich experience. When you’re out visiting an area, you can use the app to take live video, explore popular places around you, start conversations, or leave messages for friends at specific locations. And if you like, you can also leave them a video, photo, or even audio to further engage them.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2_clingle.jpg" alt="check in mobile app" width="361" height="542" />

What differentiates Clingle from other check-in apps is the inclusion of video into check-ins. One of the things I love about apps like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/foursquare/">Foursquare and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/recommend-stuff-social-network-followers-oink-kinetik-iphone/">Oink is the ability to add photos to check-ins, which really add to the experience and help users show off a little bit about the places they’re visiting, activities they’re doing, and things they’re seeing. According to Clingle, “It’s the best way to check-in ever!

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/3_clingle.jpg" alt="check in android app" width="350" height="526" />

The other cool feature is being able to leave messages – called Clings – at places for your friends. These can be in the form of a surprise audio, video, or picture message that friends would then have to unlock when they visit a particular place. Regardless of the type of Cling you leave for your friends, it should be a nice surprise for them once they unlock it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/4_clingle.jpg" alt="check in android app" width="361" height="542" />

You can also start a private group conversation with your friends, which you can use to do anything from planning a future trip with them to sharing a song that comes to mind whenever you visit a specific place. iTunes audio can be used as Clings too, which really makes sharing audio easier.

Currently, Clingle works best for users located in the US, UK, India, and Singapore, but you’ll soon be able to use it everywhere. It’s available for href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clingle/id449924410?mt=8">iPhone and href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clingle">Android, with support for other devices coming soon as well.

What do you think of Clingle? Will you be adding video to your check-ins?

How To Mute Sound On Webpages With Embedded Audio Or Flash

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox.jpg" alt="mute webpage" />It happens to all of us. We love using class="vt-p" href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/">browser tabs to open more and more links in the background and then go through them one by one. However it is really irritating when some of the tabs in the background auto-play video or audio files which interferes with what you are currently listening to or which distracts you from your normal browsing or working routine.

Luckily, there are a few handy tools that could prevent that annoying experience or at least help you quickly cope with the distractions. The tools below will come in handy to:

  • Disable sound from unwanted ads (especially on pages which were open in the background and you can’t quickly find the source of the sound);
  • Open several flash games or YouTube videos in background tabs and play the sound from the one tab only;
  • Browse without the fear that someone at work will find out what you are really doing;
  • Browse pages with auto-playing videos and audio files without being distracted from what you are currently listening to.

Firefox

There’s no instantly available option in Firefox that lets us quickly mute sound in a (background) tab but luckily there are a few workarounds that make disabling auto-playing and muting sound at least easier to access.

Audio Controller

class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/audio-controller/">Audio Controller is a little FireFox addon that lets you quickly switch the sound off in your browser via the addons bar icon.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-01.jpg" alt="mute webpage" width="168" height="85" />

It is also supposed to work via the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+M) but that didn’t work for me for some reason.

Flash Block

class="vt-p" href="http://flashblock.mozdev.org/">Flash Block is a great addon that disables all auto-playing videos and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-block-annoying-ads-in-firefox/">helps you get rid of unwanted ads in FireFox. The addon instead displays a “Flash” icon.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-02.jpg" alt="mute website" width="194" height="227" />

Hover over the icon to play the video on request:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-03.jpg" alt="mute website" width="374" height="213" />

Obviously, it will only help you mute sound coming from flash videos and ads.

Google Chrome

class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nmkbaaijgpppbokgnhhoakihofedkgcc">Mute Tab is a dream extension for any browser owner. It lets you quickly control the sound of any open tab in your browser:

  • Quickly identify where a sound is coming from using the list of all possible sound sources or track down the source of the sound via an icon (optional);
  • Control the sound of a single tab, all tabs, or all tabs but the current one – from the toolbar icon – or mute all sounds in the background by default.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-06.jpg" alt="mute website" width="346" height="306" />

From Options You Can

  • Set to automatically mute all background tabs;
  • Change icon when tab might have sound;
  • Show specific possible sound sources

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-05.jpg" alt="mute web browser" width="551" height="524" />

Opera

class="vt-p" href="http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/846/">Opera’s built-in options don’t give you any way to quickly mute sound from a webpage or a plugin. Even using those options (you can quickly trigger them using the F12 keyboard shortcut on Windows), sound from flash applications might still go through.

There’s one possible solution Opera recommends to mute webpages on its official guide: a very old class="vt-p" href="http://indev.no/flashmute.aspx">Flash Mute program that is still supported by Opera (it doesn’t seem to work for Firefox though). The tool works on Windows and sits in the system tool tray letting you quickly mute any flash video with the CTRL+ALT+M keyboard shortcut:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mute-sound-firefox-04.jpg" alt="mute webpage" width="226" height="235" />

Do you have any other useful tips on muting webpages in a browser? If so, please share them in the comments!

SongSprite – A SUPER Simple Way to Create & Share Audio Playlists From YouTube

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0_songsprite.jpg?54167" alt="" />In an article I wrote back in February entitled,  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-websites-check-music-releases/">The 4 Best Websites To Check Out New Music Releases First, I pointed out that  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube is a great place to find new music. Simply put, there are lots of music videos on the site and no matter what you’re into I guarantee they’ve got it.

But do you know what the problem is with YouTube as a music-listening platform? It wasn’t really built for that, and because it wasn’t, it lacks a few key things that a typical music platform would have, like the ability to save music playlists. Okay, so YouTube does technically have a playlist feature for music, but you still have to wait for the video to load in order to listen to your song, and sometimes that can be a pain. I’ve found a simpler way to do things, and it’s called SongSprite.

What Is SongSprite?

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/5_songsprite.png?54167" alt="" width="476" height="394" />

class="vt-p" href="http://www.songsprite.com/">SongSprite ( class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/songsprite-create-audio-playlists/">directory app) pulls the audio from YouTube videos and lets you make your favorite tracks into a playable playlist that you can share with others. You simply get the URLs of the YouTube videos you’d like to play or share, paste them into SongSprite and then you will be able to listen to them or send a link to your newly created playlist to whoever you like.

SongSprite allows you to connect, collaborate and share playlists in real time with your friends.

The process of creating a playlist is SongSprite is extremely simple.

How Do I Use SongSprite?

The first place you need to go is YouTube and start browsing for music you would like to add to your new playlist.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/1_songsprite.jpg?54167" alt="" width="553" height="510" />

Once you find a song that you like, just go up and copy the URL for it. Shortened links won’t work, so make sure the URL you grab is of normal length. Paste the link into the box on SongSprite and click the Add button to the right. If you’re using class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/chrome/">Google Chrome as your browser, the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-extremely-chrome-extensions-life-easier/">Split Screen extension would be great for this. Check it out.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2_songsprite.png?54167" alt="" width="287" height="200" />

You’ll know you entered the information correctly because it will place the name of the song into your list below. You can keep adding songs in this way until you are happy with the playlist you’ve created.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3_songsprite.png?54167" alt="" width="307" height="100" />

To share your playlist once it is done, just copy the URL below the player and paste it in an email or IM, or click the Share icon to send the link to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, or StumbleUpon.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/4_songsprite.png?54167" alt="" width="328" height="46" />

Conclusion

While having the ability to take content from YouTube and listen to it via a site like SongSprite is extremely convenient for all of us, I doubt that YouTube would really take kindly to this type of “extension”, seeing as none of YouTube’s ads or copyright permissions seem to come with the music you’re getting with the service. Having said that, I do think SongSprite is a great resource and a site that I could see myself using again and again. I invite you all to check it out and let me know what you think.

    How To Remove Ambient Noise From Your Audio Files Using Audacity

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/shutterstock_75960835-300x300.jpg" alt="how to remove background noise from audio" />If you’re a little bit musical or you make your own podcasts, you’ve probably noticed that sometimes your recordings can sound a little annoying due to the background noise captured in the recording process. This white noise is not always easy to remove, but can be minimalised by the use of free tools and a little know-how.

    href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity is a free program available for Mac, Windows and Linux, so most people should be able to download this and use it to clean up their recordings. Today we’ll take you through a few simple steps you can use on all recordings to remove background noise from audio.

    Install Audacity

    When you’ve href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">downloaded Audacity, you’ll notice that it’s able to be used to import or record music and vocal tracks and can be used to mix tracks together for other purposes. This makes it very useful to musicians and podcasters alike, whether you are an amateur or a professional. It’s very easy to isolate sections of each individual track and use the editing features to remove the ambient noise in the background.

    Import Or Record Audio

    Either import the audio file you wish to clean up, or use Audacity as the recording tool. In Mac you need to go to Project > Import Audio, whereas in Windows you’d use File > Import > Audio.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Import-audio.png" alt="how to remove background noise from audio" />

    Isolate A Quiet Moment

    After importing, you’ll see the tracks of the audio file as separate lines in Audacity. This shows the waveform of the track. Flat sections are quiet while big vertical lines indicate the noisy sections.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Tracks.png" alt="noise removal help audacity" />

    Zoom in until you can find a moment where there was no deliberate sound in the track (the flattest bit you can find), such as when you paused for a moment. Go to View > Zoom In. Then highlight the flat section by clicking and dragging with your mouse across that part of the track. Audacity suggests this selection href="http://wiki.audacityteam.org/w/index.php?title=Reducing_noise&redirect=no">shouldn’t be longer than a half a second.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Selection-from-track.png" alt="noise removal help audacity" />

    This will isolate a moment where all you recorded was the ambient background noise. By letting Audacity know precisely how much background noise there was, it can calculate how to remove it from the rest of the track.

    Step 1 – Get Noise Profile

    Once you’ve selected the quiet part of the track, go to select Effect > Noise Removal.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Noise-removal.png" alt="noise removal help audacity" />

    This opens up a dialogue to remove the noise. You’re performing Step 1 here, so click on “Get Noise Profile” and the dialogue will disappear. You can do this again at any time and it will overwrite the previous selection. What happens next is a little confusing, as it has already acknowledged your quiet section of your audio track and simply shut the window on you.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/noise-removal-window.png" alt="how to remove background noise from audio" />

    Step 2 – Apply Noise Reduction

    Now Audacity needs to know which parts of the audio track you want to apply the noise reduction to. Most likely, you’ll want to apply the reduction to the whole project, so click CTRL-A or CMD-A to select all. If you want to select just a portion of the track or just one track, place your cursor at the start of your desired selection and go to Edit > Select > Cursor to End. Then, to remove ambient noise from the selection, go to Effect > Noise Removal again.

    We’ve done step 1, so skip to step 2 now. Move the slider to indicate how aggressively you want Audacity to strip the background noise from your track. Many people tend towards the lower end, since stripping out too much sound can make voices sound quite tinny and weird. You can preview the sound or go straight to “Remove Noise“. If you don’t like it later, you can undo it. Make sure you listen to it before you go on to make more changes.

    When you view your tracks, you should be able to see that the peaks are not quite as high, and the flat sections are far flatter now.

    If you’re dealing with a special case, such as removing noise from cassette audio, take a look at the full href="http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Noise_Removal">Audacity wiki page on noise removal. There’s some great tips.

    8 Online Audio Pronunciation Guides That Help You Speak Words Correctly

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;margin-top:5px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Shutterstock-Pronunciation.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation guide" width="250" height="188" />It is said that the French are very particular about their language and the way it’s spoken. Pronouncing French words is rather difficult as it has lots of silent letters and syllables; even a single letter pronounced in different ways.

    But wait: is English any different? In fact, we may not be paying attention because to most of us speaking and pronouncing English comes naturally.

    There are many though, for whom English is a second or a third language and it takes some effort on their part to understand the way the words are spelled and spoken. This is where pronunciation guides become useful.

    id="more-66569"> /> There’s a long list of common words that are often mispronounced (“Arctic” not “Artic”; “athlete” not “athelete”; “cornet” not “coronet”). While every self respecting href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/dictionary/">online dictionary includes audio pronunciation these days, here are eight more that are dedicated to teaching correct pronunciation with the help of audio.

    href="http://www.forvo.com/">Forvo

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation01.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation guide"width="580" height="352" />

    Forvo.com is one of the most broad based audio pronunciation guides available on the web today. The figures sum it up – 903,848 words; 909,460 pronunciations in 267 languages. Forvo in its aim to index all the words spoken worldwide also allows “bad words” as long as they are politely pronounced and appear in well-known dictionaries. You can also find short idioms and a few known titles in the index. Everyone can record pronunciations, thus contributing to the index. The most covered languages are English, Portuguese, and Russian. The audio pronunciations are also organized in various categories like sports, science, politics etc.

    href="http://www.howjsay.com/">Howjsay

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation02.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation" width="580" height="268" />

    The site with an ‘unpronounceable’ name defines itself as a free online talking dictionary of English pronunciation. You have to simply type in the word and mouseover the result to hear it spoken as it should be spoken. Words are pre-recorded in human voice. Pronunciation is in Standard British English, with World English alternatives like American English also provided. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/howjsay/">Directory mention)

    href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/pron/">BBC Learning English

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation04.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation" width="580" height="435" />

    When it’s the Queen’s Language, the BBC’s World Service has to be an important educational resource. The pronunciation tips are less of a straightforward guide and more of a how-to on the methods one can employ to understand how a word is spoken. The spelling of a word is not always an accurate guide to how it is pronounced, and that’s why BBC helps out with the sounds behind the English language.

    href="http://www.inogolo.com/">Inogolo

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation05.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation" width="580" height="328" />

    The English pronunciation guide covers names of – people, places, and sundry other subjects like sports, religion, food, drink, and many more.   For instance, if you don’t know how “Lager” is said out aloud in a bar, check out the site. Both phonetic and audio pronunciations are available. The pronunciations are in American English spoken in the general American accent. If you are still having trouble, check out the link to the pronunciation key that’s on each page. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/inogolo-correct-name-pronunciation/">Directory mention)

    href="http://hearnames.com/">HearNames

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation06.jpg" alt="free pronunciation guide" width="580" height="338" />

    Every culture has its own dialect and its own diction. Getting names right in the correct accent can save you from a red face when you visits a foreign country (or even in one’s own). This site helps out by giving you a name pronunciation guide across different languages. The names are spoken by native speakers. Some languages have few entries, but the collection is good because it attempts to cover languages which we might consider uncommon. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/howtosaythatname-howto-pronounce-difficult-names/">Directory mention)

    href="http://septicscompanion.com/">The Septic’s Companion

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation07.jpg" alt="free pronunciation guide" width="580" height="305" />

    We had listed this website when we had gone over href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-online-slang-dictionaries-learn-jargon-street-language/">10 Online Slang Dictionaries To Learn Jargon & Street Language. The site makes this list again, because it’s a handy guide to British slang pronunciations with audio. A few words don’t have audio files associated with them but they are in the minority. This guide should be a great help for those trying to fit into the street culture in an around Britain.

    href="http://www.rachelsenglish.com/">Rachel’s English

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation08.jpg" alt="free pronunciation guide" width="580" height="342" />

    Learning pronunciation can be fun as the series of videos on this website set out to prove. The videos are well made and each goes into the nuances of American English. Videos explain how different sounds come together to form a word. Each sound has two videos. The first is a very short video, simply the sound and an example word. The second video is a how-to video which goes deeper how the tongue vocalizes the sound. Each video also has a video text with the transcript.

    href="http://sayit.solid1pxred.com/">SayIt

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Pronunciation09.jpg" alt="audio pronunciation guide" width="580" height="351" />

    SayIt takes the SMS route to help you out with word pronunciations. When you hit a difficult word, just send a SMS to the service’s number and the app will call you back with the exact pronunciation. You can also choose to hear the complete definition of the word. It is a U.S only service, though. Carrier charges may apply. The pronunciation by SMS service uses Forvo.com’s pronunciation guide at the backend. (See href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/sayit-correct-pronunciation-of-words/">Directory mention)

    Correct pronunciation also helps in spelling a word correctly. The reverse is also true to a certain extent. If you carefully examine your speech, you will see a lot of common errors we make every day when it comes to pronouncing words correctly. These useful online guides help to nip those faults in the bud.

    Tell us about your struggle with pronunciations and any resource that you used to crack it.
