Different music genres are a little like different languages. The more you listen to them, the more you get them. You start recognizing bits and pieces and although you may never become entirely fluent or enjoy the sound, you will eventually understand. I’ve lived within 20 minutes of the Mexican border most of my life. From her EPK: “Alison Carney is a jack of all trades. A singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and an educator, Alison uses everything she does creatively to continuously foster her artistic growth. She is an experienced vocalist whose natural born ability to create sound, is a gift to us all. Born and raised in Washington DC, her sound transcends any categorization of how music is defined. Her live performance can be described as pleasantly energetic and astonishingly chill. With a firm understanding of how sound effects emotion, the structure around her songwriting is structureless. Thus, she presents herself to all in natural form, the result is honest music.”

From the album introduction: “V.I.T.R.I.O.L. is a concept album inspired to the alchemical spirituality and the metaphorical search for the philosopher’s stone. His message is very simple, as well as his musical structure. Four tracks represent the stages of the process (magnum opus), leading to the creation of the stone and to enlightenment. It’s important to remember that, although the operations are described as successive steps of a detailed procedure, this is not a linear path, but a series of narrowing approximations. A spiral evolution, which returns back on itself renewing each time, to match the beginning with the end, overlapping the opposites in the primordial principle from which each entity derives. To represent this continuous stretching and infinite approximation, the album cover is the symbol of the squared circle, suggesting the existence of the alchemist and his spiritual quest is an improving approximation of perfection.”

Despite being a relatively small country with roughly 9 million inhabitants, Sweden has produced an impressive amount of world-renown brands, such as IKEA, Volvo, H&M, or Ericsson, and let’s not forget the Nobel Prize! Swedes are very creative, which is also reflected in the local music scene. Since ABBA’s legendary victory of the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, many famous bands have emerged from Sweden, including Roxette, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, Millencolin, and most recently Mando Diao. This edition of Sound Sunday is dedicated to Sweden and Swedish music.

/> Strangers In Wonderland consists of Åsa Girgensohn, who does all the singing and everything else, and Lasse Thomasson who just does the everything else bit, except for maybe the odd backing vocal or so.”
