10 Awesome Free Albums From Independent Artists & Labels [Sound Sunday August 7th]

Posted on 08 August 2011. Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/images/recurring/sound-sunday.png"/>Welcome to Sound Sunday!

If I could recommend you to listen to only one song today, it would be the instrumental piece 8.19 by Matt Stevens on Spencer Park Music’s Label Sampler (first song). Fortunately, however, there are tons of great tracks in this edition that are worth recommending. My favorite album this week is Red Robot’s Identification. I have also included several samplers to offer a bit more variety and a taste of more different artists and genres.

Whether or not you enjoy the music in this edition, please post your feedback in the comments. I also accept album suggestions and genre requests via email [tina at makeuseof dot com].

title="The Apache Relay Homepage" href="http://www.theapacherelay.com/website/">The Apache Relay – American Nomad

Genre: indie, alternative, roots

From their href="http://www.facebook.com/theapacherelay?sk=info" title="The Apache Relay Facebook">Facebook Biography: “The Apache Relay takes more long car rides than most bands. But only a portion of their car time is dedicated to their touring schedule — the rest is something like driving in the middle of the night from Nashville to Alabama and back, just to listen to a new record 12 consecutive times. Despite their wagon’s sketchy brakes, this happens a lot. It’s where the indie-roots band discovered a shared love for the timelessness of Motown records, the weight of Springsteen’s Nebraska, the textures of modern rock bands, as well as the intensity of really skilled acoustic players.

From the album introduction on NoiseTrade: “It’s hard to believe a band like POPCULT hails from the American Midwest (Denver, CO). title="The Apache Relay Homepage" href="http://www.theapacherelay.com/website/">The Apache Relay – American Nomad

Genre: alternative, pop

From the album introduction on NoiseTrade: “It’s hard to believe a band like POPCULT hails from the American Midwest (Denver, CO). With sounds nostalgic of alternative brit-pop in its heyday (e.g. young Coldplay, early Muse), one would assume the band originated overseas, where they’d at least be old enough to buy a drink.

10 Awesome Free Albums From Independent Artists & Labels [Sound Sunday August 7th]

Posted on 07 August 2011. Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/images/recurring/sound-sunday.png"/>Welcome to Sound Sunday!

Red Robot is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Identification is their debut album, released only a few days ago. On their href="http://www.myspace.com/redrobotband" title="Red Robot MySpace">MySpace page Andy reveals the story behind the band name: “I used to write stories as a little kid about a Red Robot who used to save lives with all his crazy gear and heroics. At some point (thankfully), I stopped writing these stories and started writing songs instead, so now we’re sharing it with all of you. So the name pretty much connects to how my imagination is used today.
