Minecraft Version 1.0 Arrives November 18th, Release Preview Available Now [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/creeperface1.jpg" alt="" />Gamers have been playing and enjoying href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-play-minecraft-multiplayer-server-gaming/">Minecraft for nearly 2 years now, but the version offered until now was not, in fact, the full game. It was instead Minecraft Beta, an evolving piece of software with new features added (almost) every month.

As of November 18th, however, the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/beta/">beta officially ends and version 1.0 of the game becomes available. It will include completed versions of features that debuted in the href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/09/13/minecraft-adventure-update-impressions/">Adventure Update and a huge variety of small enhancements such as new blocks, new monsters, and new achievements.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/enderdragon.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="316" />

Perhaps the most important new feature, however, is an end to the game. A new dimension called The Ender, which was first added to beta in October, will be accessible by players. Inside it, players will find the Enderdragon, a mythical beast of great power. Players who manage to defeat it will be given “The End” href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-awards-acheivements-online-scorely/">achievement and be treated to an end-game sequence.

Although the official release of version 1.0 occurs on the 18th, to coincide with MineCon, players can already href="http://twitter.com/#!/jeb_/status/135018767620112385">download the final pre-release beta, which has all the features of the full release.

If you’ve been on the fence about Minecraft, now would be a good time to buy it. The game is 25% off during beta, so you have only a few more days until that discount goes away.

Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader Now Available In Mozilla Firefox [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/kindle-cloud-e1320776717922.jpg" alt="" />Recently, Amazon launched their href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amazon-cloud-reader-web-app-kindle-books/">Kindle Cloud Reader, which allows Kindle users to read their books in many of their favorite browsers. However, one browser that was missing from the list was Mozilla Firefox. From day one, the HTML 5 based service supported Google Chrome, and the mobile and desktop version of Safari. Seeing as Firefox is one of the more popular browsers available, leaving it off the list of supported browsers seemed like an odd choice. Another thing that is extremely odd about this is that Firefox is one of the browsers at the forefront of HTML 5 support.

Now, only two months after the first launch of the service, Firefox is officially supported. This is great news for Kindle users who are loyal to Firefox, because sometimes a computer with a web browser is the only way to get access to your book library. I can’t imagine what caused the delay, but none the less, the wait is over, so all Kindle users who support Firefox can join the rest of us in reading our favorite books.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/kindle_cloud_reader.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="373" />

At this point, Internet Explorer still isn’t supported, and neither are many other mobile devices such as the BlackBerry PlayBook. However, because of the adaptability of HTML 5, it shouldn’t be long before Amazon adds support for these as well.

Gmail’s New Look Is Finally Here, Now Available To Everyone [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-11-02-17h33_45.png" alt="" />After giving us a preview several months ago, Gmail is now launching its brand new look and will automatically update all accounts soon. The new look is keeping up with other Google+ themed changes that have been happening all over Google products (like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-reader-receives-update-adds-google-design-news/">Reader, for example), and comes packed with new features on top of the aesthetic changes.

The change will happen automatically for everyone, but if you can’t wait or just want to see what it’s all about, you can choose to switch by clicking the “Switch to the new look” link on the right side of your Gmail screen (if you use the Gmail tasks feature on the right side of your screen, you will have to close it to see the link).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-11-02-17h34_51.png" alt="2011-11-02 17h34_51" width="548" height="369" border="0" />

One of the most prominent changes is to the themes. Gmail has got a brand new set of themes, and the one you’ve been using is most likely gone, so be prepared for a real change when you switch to the new look. Google has chosen a clean, straight-lined look which resembles Google+, and the old toolbars have been changed into icon-based ones.

Among the new features you’ll also find an improved conversation view complete with profile pictures, a new, customizable search box, more control over the content you see (like labels, chat, etc.) and adjustability to monitors of different sizes.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/gmailconversationview.jpg" alt="" width="578" height="282" />

Watch this short video for a recap of the changes to Gmail:

src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/vfW5e6jVsMs?hd=1" frameborder="0" width="580" height="325">

For now, you can go back to the old look if you don’t like it, but it won’t stay available for long.  Let us know what you think of it in the comments below.  A big improvement or a horrible mess?

Join The Giant Game Of Glitch & Lose Half Your Day [50 Invites Available!]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-300x300.jpg" alt="" />Just when you thought it was impossible for the Internet to get any more distracting, some clever coder comes along and creates something fun and truly addictive like href="http://www.glitch.com/">Glitch. Glitch is basically what happens when MUDs grow up and marry artists. It’s an intricate world full of silly puns and crazy quests, but it’s also gorgeously presented and full of great music. If you’ve ever enjoyed any aspect of multiplayer online games, try Glitch. You’ll love it. Glitch has just launched out of beta and MakeUseOf has 50 invites for you to grab!

I do need to stress that you should NOT try this at work, lest you lose the rest of your day to Glitch – and possibly your job! Once you get started you’ll lose track of time and the hours will just fly by. Watch out!

Get Your Invite

Although Glitch has launched, they’re still only allowing a few people in at a time. MakeUseOf has href="http://www.glitch.com/magic-invites/BQHNo/">50 fast-track invites for you here and once you’re in you can fast-track a handful of your friends via Facebook. If you miss out on the fast-track invites, you can join in the regular queue href="http://www.glitch.com/join/">here. If you’re really lucky one of your Facebook friends might fast-track you.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-Meadow.jpg" alt="" />

Get Playing

Sign up via email or Facebook, then dress up your avatar and get Glitching! The Glitch introduction is pretty self-explanatory and ensures you know all the basics for getting around the game and interacting with the things around you. Within a few minutes, you’ll be exploring and learning more about this weird world.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-Spice.jpg" alt="" />

What’s The Point?

Well, whatever you want it to be. You might choose to make money through gardening skills or alchemy. You might want to buy a fancy house, try all the quests you can or you might decide you want to help build new streets for people to use.

The game will evolve for you as you play, with the aim being to provide infinite game-play for everyone. It’s a non-violent, somewhat co-operative and imaginative game.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-Allspice.jpg" alt="" />

It’s all fun and games, really. That is, until we work out what the Giants have in store for us.

A Glitch Tour

There’s so many great things to see and do in Glitch that it’s perhaps best if I just show you around a little. Throughout this article are some screenshots of some of the more interesting situations and various locations.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-Mining-Pics.jpg" alt="" />

Extras

The Glitch API has been open during beta testing and has resulted in some great add-ons and applications for players outside the Glitch game itself. For instance, there is a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/glitch-hq/id453420240?mt=8">Glitch HQ iOS application which lets players chat and gain new skills while they’re not currently playing the game.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-HQ-IOS.jpg" alt="" />

Premium Features

Glitch is free for all players, but if you want some fancy premium features you can certainly pay for the privilege. Buying href="https://www.glitch.com/credits/">credits or href="https://www.glitch.com/subscribe/">subscribing will give you credits for neat clothing, teleportation tokens and other cool stuff.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Glitch-Community-Machine-Room.jpg" alt="" />

Similar Games

You might be thinking this sounds a little like WOW, Minecraft or even Second Life. In some ways, you’d be right. All of these are massively multi-player online games which strive for infinite game-play. But, at the heart of each of these is a slightly different focus and a very different game. If you’ve enjoyed any of these other games, you should definitely give Glitch a go.

What do you love about href="http://www.glitch.com/">Glitch?

Until now, the game was optimised for the Xperia Play and was not guaranteed to work well with other Android phones. This long-awaited Android application update is great news for Minecraft fans everywhere.

The application’s creators at Mojang were originally due to re-release the game on 29th September, but came across a last-minute bug to iron out. However, the instant that bug is fixed they’ll release a version of Minecraft – Pocket Edition which most Android users [2.3+] can enjoy. As well as offering support for more phones, the re-release has some great new features which Minecraft fans will love.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/MinecraftPocket-Screenshot.jpg" alt="" />

Minecraft lovers can pick up the Minecraft – Pocket Edition application for class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mojang.minecraftpe">4.99€ / US$6.50 from the Android Market or test out the class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mojang.minecraftpe.demo">demo version for free. The applications use Minecraft’s creative mode, and the demo version is limited so that users are unable to save their worlds.

The new application release will also offer touch-screen controls, which you can class="vt-p" href="http://youtu.be/rCcsuPH4vJY">see in action on YouTube here.

New Amazon Tablet Now Available Along With Three New Kindles [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image8.png" alt="" />Amazon has finally launched their much awaited tablet – Kindle Fire. The new lean mean machine is basically a 7-inch Android tablet for only $199, on which you can do anything you would be able to do on a regular wi-fi tablet. In short, Fire is not just for books, it’s for movies, apps, music, and more. The Fire does not have a camera or a microphone, and has no 3G version, but the price tag Amazon put on it certainly makes it a contender.

The Fire comes with 1GHz dual-core CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, free storage on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/amazon-launches-cloud-storage-service-5gb-free-news/">Amazon Cloud Storage and the new “Amazon Silk” browser. It does not, however, have access to Android Market, only to the Android Appstore. Appstore is currently not available worldwide, which means that in certain locations Fire users might not enjoy the full experience the tablet can provide.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-01-14h58_44.png" alt="2011-10-01 14h58_44" width="571" height="297" border="0" />

Along with Kindle Fire, Amazon has unleashed some other new members to the Kindle family. They are now offering the newest version of the Kindle for only $79, and a new Kindle Touch with touch screen in both 3G and wi-fi only versions. You can also still get the old keyboard version if you want.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-01-14h57_29.png" alt="2011-10-01 14h57_29" width="580" height="142" border="0" />

What do you think about Kindle Fire? Are tablets really the new way to read books or does the whole thing defeat the point of eReaders? Tell us in the comments.

Popular Music Program Spotify Available To General Public [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/spotifylogo.jpg" alt="" />For everyone who has been waiting patiently to get into Spotify but couldn’t get an invite, fear not because the wait is finally over. Spotify is now available for anyone to join without an invite, if you live in the US, UK, Finland, France, Norway, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Simply head over to href="http://www.spotify.com">Spotify, register for a free account and you will be ready to go.

Spotify offers three plans, one is free, one costs $5 a month and the last costs $10 a month. The free plan allows users to stream music with ads. The $5 plan removes ads and time limits from the site. The $10 plan removes everything, and allows users to download the music from the service and play it on a personal device without being connected to the Internet.

According to MacWorld, in Europe where Spotify has some 50 million subscribers, only 1 million of those opt for the paid portion of the service. Clearly the free option is the most popular, and now that Spotify is available to all in the USA I don’t see those figures changing. The $10 price point is right on par with similar music streaming services, so I would expect them to be competitive with them.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/spoty.png" alt="" width="502" height="410" />

If you are interested in checking out Spotify, href="http://www.spotify.com">go sign up and let us know in the comments how you like it.

Google+ Now Available To the Masses [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/google_plus_logo.jpg" alt="" />The time has finally arrived for Google+ to be available for everyone. If you have not been able to get a Google+ beta invite from someone, you no longer need to worry. Google is finally ready to truly go head to head with other social networking giants like Facebook and Twitter.

According to Google, they have made exactly 99 improvements to Google+ and the 100th is making Google+ available to everyone. All you have to do is head over to href="http://google.com/+">Google.com/+ and click the Sign In button to sign in with your regular Google account and create your Google+ profile. Of course, if you don’t have a Google account you can click the create new account button to make one.

This is great news for everyone who wants to join Google+. Now they won’t feel left out in the dark. For those of us already on Google+, now we can actually have some more people on there, and the place won’t feel like a ghost town as much….hopefully.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/join+.png" alt="" width="343" height="202" />

Another part of this update to Google+ is video hangouts on mobile devices. Now you can get together with your friends and video chat right from your phone. Sadly, mobile hangouts only work on Android 2.3+ devices, but Google is promising support for iOS devices soon.

TeamViewer’s File Transfer iOS App Available Now [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/team.png" alt="" />Team Viewer is one of the more popular remote desktop applications on the market. They have had an application available for class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewer.apk">Android for some time, and they have finally stepped up with an update for the Apple app store that allows transferring of files to and from the device for free. It’s great to see them step up with such an important feature.

They have an class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teamviewer/id357069581?mt=8&uo=6">iPhone and class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teamviewer/id379424610">iPad version of the application available for free to non-commercial users. If you are using the application for commercial purposes than they offer an app for class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teamviewer-pro/id357051966?mt=8&uo=6">iPhone and class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teamviewer/id379440657">iPad for $99.

The new app supports file sharing with Windows PCs, Lion OS and Linux systems, so no matter what type of computer you are using they have you covered. If you are looking to access your files while away from home, this is a must-have application.

The people behind Team Viewer actually conducted a national survey of 2,000 people and found that 74% of them wanted to be able to access their computer while away from home. I am actually shocked to find the number so high. If you are in that 74%, go and class="vt-p" href="http://teamviewer.com/en/download/mobile.aspx">download the free app, and access all of your stuff no matter where you are.

The 3 Best Android Tablets Available Today That A Buyer Should Check Out

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/bestandroidtabthumb.jpg" alt="android tablets" />While the iPad was able to jump on the tablet market before anyone else, Android tablets from competitors are starting to flow like water. There’s now a wide variety of options available and many of them are quite mature.

There are some Android tablets that stand out from the crowd. Let’s have a look at three of them that any potential buyer should be sure to check out.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/">ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/eeepadtransformer1.jpg" alt="android tablets" width="560" height="488" />

When the Eee Pad Transformer debuted, it made a surprisingly big splash. According to some reports this tablet is the second most popular currently available behind the iPad 2, which is surprising. It’s not as if ASUS has put much effort into marketing.

The reason for its sudden popularity is the optional keyboard dock. While many tablets have docks, the Eee Pad Transformer was designed from the ground up to work with one. Once inserted into the keyboard dock this tablet operates much like a netbook. A battery is hidden in the dock, as well, extending life to between 14 and 16 hours in most situations.

One downside of this Eee Pad is a lack of support for mobile data plans, although a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gs-ltes-understanding-mobile-broadband-technology-explained/">3G version is expected sometime this month.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/eeepadtransformer-21.jpg" alt="best android tablets" width="560" height="372" />

Don’t let yourself be hung up on the dock, however – you don’t need it to make this a great device. The base tablet is excellent and it’s just $399 (the dock is an additional $150). It offers solid build quality combined with an elegant Espresso finish. While the pricing might lead one to think this is a budget option, the Eee Pad is actually on par with the competition, right down to the Tegra 2 processor.

class="vt-p" href="http://shop.lenovo.com/us/products/tablets/ideapad/">Lenovo IdeaPad K1

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/lenovoideapadk1.jpg" alt="best android tablets" width="520" height="434" />

Just released in July, the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is the company’s first consumer Android tablet. Sex appeal is one of the K1’s greatest strengths. It’s offered with several different color options for the back panel and features a smooth design that, in my opinion, is even more attractive than the iPad 2.

Another impressive feature is the user interface. Stock Honeycomb is common on Android tablets, and any changes are usually not for the best. The K1, however, adds a convenient class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/great-3d-launchers-revamp-android-phone-homescreen/">launcher widget in the middle of the home screen that lets users sort apps into specific categories like Watch (movies) or Listen (music/podcasts). This organization reminds me a lot of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-7-libraries-%E2%80%93-and-why-you-want-them/">libraries in Windows 7. There are a few other extras as well, such as an App Wheel that can be used as a quick-launcher for your favorite apps.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/lenovoideapadk1-2.jpg" alt="best android tablets" width="559" height="373" />

The rest of the K1’s features are standard for Android tablets. It has a Tegra 2 processor and battery life of over 8 hours, which is a bit better than average. The only potential deal-breaker is the tablet’s relatively hefty weight of 1.6 pounds. Still, the base price of $499 is attractive.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/index.html">Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/samsunggalaxytab-1.jpg" alt="android tablets review" width="492" height="400" />

Apple’s iPad had no serious competition until Samsung released the Galaxy Tab in the latter half of 2010. The original was quite robust, but in response to the iPad 2 it has been redesigned significantly.

The new version, called the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, is a formidable opponent. It’s slightly lighter than Cupertino’s tablet (1.24 pounds vs. 1.35) and is approximately as thin. The design doesn’t have the punch of the K1 or the elegance of the Eee Pad, but it’s attractive in its own right and it’s lighter than either of those entries. Users can expect over eight hours of endurance from the battery. Like the other entries here, this tablet has a Tegra 2 processor.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/samsunggalaxytab-2.jpg" alt="android tablets" width="594" height="442" />

At $499, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn’t try to win on price alone. The Eee Pad Transformer is clearly better value, but its subdued aesthetics won’t be to everyone’s taste and it’s heavier. The K1 carries extra bulk as well. As a result, this tablet is likely the best choice for frequent fliers, road warriors, and other users who will often be using the tablet without a stand or solid piece of furniture to sit it upon.

Conclusion

In my opinion, these three tablets are the clear winners in the current Android market. The Xoom was great when it came out, but the styling is now unimpressive and the display was never great. The Acer Iconia Tab feels cheap but remains more expensive than the Eee Pad Transformer. Toshiba’s Thrive is bulky yet offers less battery life than the options above.

The market is changing rapidly, so buyers should keep a look out for the latest-and-greatest. But for now, these are truly the best Android tablets.  Do you have one of these three?  If so, how do you like it?

MakeUseOf PDF Guides Now Available On iPad & Smartphones [Announcements]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/featured-ibooks-pdfguides.jpg" alt="" />First off – apologies. We’ve had some issues over the last few months figuring out how to make our amazing and ever expanding selection of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/downloads/">free guides available to iPhone, iPad and Android users. Until now, due to technical difficulties in the way we offer downloads, you had to first download on a desktop, then import the PDF into your device and finally synchronize.

Now you can easily download and view our entire selection of MakeUseOf PDF Guides right there on your smartphones and iPad, without any hassle!

iPad and iPhone

Upon accessing the downloads page, you’ll be presented with all the newest guides in chronological order, with a helpful preview image and a paragraph about the content. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to view more entries from the archives too – as of now our entire back catalog is available to mobile users (including my own magical iPad guide, if you’re interested).

There’s also a great search facility now if you’re looking for something specific. This truly is a fantastic way to view and save our guides, so I’m sure you’ll appreciate it!

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_0067.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

Click through to the guide you’d like, and the download link for your device will be at the top in style="colour: red;">red. Unlike downloading on the desktop, we’ve made it so that you don’t need a password (which you can get by simply subscribing to our email newsletter, by the way) – but this may change in the future.

Note: please only use the red link at the top, do not use the “download it now” links in the rest of the page as these are designed for desktop users.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_0068.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

Give it a while to download – especially on a slow 3G connection – but it should show up right there in your browser if you’re using Safari. For iPhone and iPad users, you are then free to add the book to your iBooks – just give it a single tap and click the Open in iBooks button to add it to your device’s storage:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_0070.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

The PDF guide will then be permanently available in your iBooks shelf and will synchronize with any other devices you own through iTunes, so you can keep reading on your other iPad or iPhone.

Note: If you’re having trouble finding it, remember that PDFs are stored on their own separate book shelf for iBook purchases. There should be a button labelled PDFs at the top of your book shelf.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_0066.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

On the iPhone, the interface is basically identical but with no sidebar.

Android Mobiles

Though the look and feel is the same for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-android/">Android devices, you need an additional app to view PDF files. Our resident Android expert, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/author/erez/">Erez, recommends class="vt-p" href="http://www.appbrain.com/app/adobe%C2%AE-reader%C2%AE/com.adobe.reader">Adobe’s own PDF Reader to handle them, but I must say it’s a shame this isn’t built into the browser. Other users report that some office suites come with PDF readers, and class="vt-p" href="http://www.appbrain.com/app/ezpdf-reader/udk.android.reader">ezPDF appears to be another popular choice.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screen-android.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="471" />

I’m sorry it’s taken so long to make these available for mobile use, and thank you to all those who have contacted us in the past few months to report errors and issues. Please know that your views are heard, and that if you ever contact myself or any other member of the editorial team with comments, suggestions and errors, we do consider everything seriously and very often make changes acting upon your feedback.

Don’t forget, we also have a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">lively tech support community here with editors, writers, and readers alike all on hand to answer your nagging technical issues.

Firefox 4 Release Candidate Available for Download [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/logo2.png"/>We’ve already given you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-reasons-upgrading-firefox-4/">7 reasons you might consider upgrading to Firefox 4, so if you’re eager to try out the latest features, the release candidate is now available for href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/RC/">download. The release candidate has been available for a few days, and for those of you who didn’t want to install the beta, the stability the latest version offers is reason enough to take the plunge.

With changes made both to Firefox’s appearance, as well as countless changes under the hood, there’s a lot worth trying out in the release candidate.

Changes have been made to Firefox’s appearance, specifically changing the tab location, to above the address bar. (Chrome anyone?)

id="more-67598">

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Tabs.png" width="576" height="215" />

A unique new Firefox tab feature is the ability to pin tabs to your browser. This comes in handy for websites you tend to keep open all the time, such as webmail, and is just one of a few features which will appeal to users who’s online life is in the cloud.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/pin.png" width="423" height="228" />

Another useful in-the-cloud feature is the synchronisation feature, all of your your Firefox data – from settings to passwords, from history to open tabs – can be available to you on all of your devices, including Android and iOS devices, through a Firefox sync server.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Synchronisation.png" width="580" height="485" />

The release candidate also launches a revamped add-ons management centre, with an updated slick interface making it easy to search for and install Firefox plugins.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Addons.jpg" width="580" height="284" />

Under the hood, you’ll find that Firefox 4 RC is faster than any previous version – at least 3 and a half times faster than previous versions according to tests.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/speed.png" width="546" height="421" />

In addition, Firefox 4 RC features HTML 5 support, enhanced privacy settings, and crash protection, meaning when Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins crash, you can reload the page without having to restart Firefox.

If you want to give Firefox 4 RC a try, head over and href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/RC/">download your copy now.
