Do You Try To Avoid Additional Tethering Fees? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg"/>Last week we asked you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/alwayson-internet-connection-makeuseof-poll/">whether you had an always-on internet connection, because we wanted to know how many of you could still play games that require an always-on connection. It seems that most of you do have an always-on connection, but some of you who commented are upset that games require such things all the same.

We collected a total of 505 votes, divided like this: 87% voters have a reliable always-on internet connection; 7% voters have an always-on connection which is not reliable; 5% voters only connect to the internet when required; and 1% voters have no internet connection of their own.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

Although many users have reliable internet connections, there are still 13% of voters who would be unable to play games which required an always-on internet connection.

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Do You Try To Avoid Additional Tethering Fees?

Many smartphone providers have recently taken steps to make users pay more for basic services. Tethering laptops and other devices to a smartphone used to be an included service on most phone plans (not all), since the process of tethering was available with the phone and both parties considered tethering data costs as included in the phone’s data plan.

Now things have changed and many providers have begun to charge additional fees for use of a tethering service. Some have even gone a step further and have begun to block applications which attempt to get around tethering costs. The tethering fees range from modest monthly fees to outrageous daily fees, but the issue at hand is whether you agree with them in the first place.

Consider this: If your phone OS has tethering as a standard feature (like Android) and you’ve already got a plan for your data, are you going to try to avoid being charged extra to tether your laptop? What do you think is fair?

align="center"> />

What fees does your provider charge for tethering? Do you think it’s fair for these fees to be charged? Was tethering mentioned in your contract? What do you use to get around tethering fees? Let us know in the comments!

We need to clarify one important fact – by installing the wrong drivers for a device, it may not work properly and may even cause serious windows errors. Acting as a ‘communicator’ between windows and a device, a driver has a very critical role, as without it you won’t be able to operate any of your devices. Let’s just hope that maybe in the future our windows update feature would offer automatic updates to these critical files as well. In case you know of other pc users who face driver problems of any kind, then feel free to forward them the following article.

4 Easy Ways to Avoid Plagiarism on Your Blog

ways to avoid plagiarismBeing original all the time can be tough, but copying another person’s work and passing it as our own is a punishable offense. Nothing can hit the credibility of a blog hard than a plagiarism charge.

It may not be you, but one of the new interns at the blog could have lifted content off another blog to make the deadline. How to ensure your blog’s reputation is not tarnished? Check out our coverage of 4 online plagiarism checkers after the jump for excellent ways to avoid plagiarism on your blog.

PercentDupe

ways to avoid plagiarism

PercentDupe is an online plagiarism and duplicate content detection tool. This web app offers two ways to check the originality of the written content in question. You can either use a weblink from your blog (either from a test blog or a published post) or just copy and paste the content in the text box. Results are pretty comprehensive with the link to the original article from where the content was copied and how much percentage of the content has been plagiarized from the original. Since the service is still in beta, PercentDupe lists a maximum of seven links from where the written content was copied from.

crossrefme

steps to avoid plagiarism

With its innovative & unique algorithm, crossrefme dredges through millions of web pages to check if the content under examination has already been published elsewhere on the Internet. The content check process as simple as copying & pasting text in the text box. The results page is nicely designed and displays multiple links from where the content is copied from, along with the percentage of similarity between both the versions. In addition to the individual percentages of originality, there is also an overall originality indicator on top of the results. The result also highlights sentences and words that have been copied from the original prominently. This tool is one of the best ways to avoid plagiarism.

Dupli Checker

With a bunch of options to tweak and multiple search engine integration, Dupli Checker is quite feature rich. Users can choose between the classic and advanced duplicate detection options. Neither of the option changes the way the search for duplicate content occurs, only the manner in which the results are displayed. When the classic option is selected, individual results are shown for each and every sentence. This sure is an unconventional way to check for plagiarism but the results turned out to be fine.

steps to avoid plagiarism

Results from the advanced search were more precise with only the most relevant duplication links listed and are presented in a more refined style.

steps to avoid plagiarism

Results from both advanced and classic modes were more precise with Google as the search engine, though users can toggle between Yahoo and MSN to execute the duplication checks.

Google

Now what to do when you forget to keep bookmarks of these plagiarism checkers or if any of these sites are down for maintenance? There is always the almighty Google to turn to. Online plagiarism checkers do not index the web themselves to check for duplicates. When you execute a plagiarism check, the algorithm under the hood of these websites searches the pages indexed by Google, Yahoo, MSN or any other search engine for that matter. So in most cases, online plagiarism checkers act as better wrappers to deliver the results from a search engine. Let us go ahead and see how to search at the source.

ways to avoid plagiarism

In the search box, just type text followed by the content in quotes. The syntax is: text “Enter the content to check here”. Voila! We now have the links to pages from the content has been lifted.

Final Thoughts

During my evaluation, I found PercentDupe to be pretty good and very close to premium services like Copyscape. Though the Dupli Checker’s idea of searching for every sentence is weird, the results were fine in the advanced mode. The only downside of using Google to search for duplicates is that the search query is limited to 32 words. But considering the power of Google’s algorithm, the results were spot on.

For a list of more plagiarism checkers, check out our roundup on “5 Free Websites To Catch The Copycats” and the one about Plagium. Are there any other better ways to avoid plagiarism using online or desktop tools? If so, please share it us.

How To Avoid A Potentially Dangerous Computer Virus

The fact is, virus coders are becoming more sophisticated every day. As computer users become more educated and anti virus software gets more effective, virus coders are always looking for ways to get past both internet users and anti virus software.

This means that users need to remain ever vigilant to avoid becoming the victim of a potentially very harmful computer virus. It is important for every computer owner to know that not all viruses are the same. Some computer viruses are just annoying, generating popup ads as you browse the web, or increasing the amount of SPAM you receive.

Other types of computer virus, however, can be more dangerous. Some computer viruses can wipe out a hard drive, or steal your personal information and files. To make matters worse, some computer viruses are able to hide in a computer for some time, activating at a future date and doing their damage when triggered by certain events or dates.

Fortunately, computer owners do not have to be at the mercy of computer virus coders. There are a number of measures computer users can take to protect themselves from viruses, Trojan horses, adware, spyware and other malicious code on the internet.

For starters, it is essential that all computer users install a good quality anti virus software program BEFORE their computer is connected to the internet. This is because there are programs that constantly search the internet, looking for computers that are unprotected by virus scanning software. A recent survey by a security organisation found that it takes only minutes for a computer to become infected with viruses and spyware. Installing an anti virus software program is vital to protecting yourself from these malicious programs.

It is also important to update that anti virus software program on a regular basis. In the past, many computer security experts recommended doing updates on a weekly basis, but most agree that weekly updates are no longer sufficient. It is generally best to update the anti virus software you install daily, and to schedule those updates to run automatically. Running the updates automatically will ensure you do not forget to update the software, and running the updates daily will ensure that you are protected against the latest threats.

Most users will want to schedule the updates to their virus scanning software to occur during the night, when they are asleep. Running these updates when the computer is not in use is a good idea for a number of reasons. For one thing, updating the anti virus software when the computer is not in use will ensure that there are no conflicts, and that the program is able to update itself to detect the latest computer virus. Running the updates after hours will also prevent the updates from interfering with web surfing or any other activity. Running a computer virus protection update can sometimes interfere with other software, so it is best to run it automatically, when you do not need the computer for other things.

Windows Vista Feature to Avoid Power Misuse

One of the significant features Microsoft introduced in Vista is new power saving mode. Windows XP has two power saving mode, Standby and Hibernate. Windows Vista replaced them by Sleep mode. Hibernate is still available as an advanced power setting, but the Sleep mode is the default one and has more advanced features.

While in sleep, computer uses very less power for internal use. In notebooks, with the minimum power used during sleep mode, system goes to stand by mode and the state of the system is saved in the memory. If battery power goes down to critically low level, the system wakes for a very short time to save the needed information onto the hard drive, and immediately goes to hibernate state.

In Desktop systems, the process is little different. Here Microsoft Vista uses “hybrid sleep”. In hybrid sleep, the state of the system is stored both in RAM and on disk, so that system can recover it’s state in case the power is lost. After saving the state of the system, it goes to sleep mode from where computer can easily bring back to working state. Top goal of introducing this mode is enabling easy and first ‘on’ and ‘off’ of the computer. While making sure computer can save all data when the system is turned off, and brings in same state while you turn back on. In order to ensure that “off” worked effectively with this new model, instead of waiting for green signal from each application in the computer, Windows Vista sending notice to each application, services and devices about the power saving state and wait for maximum 2 seconds for them to finish up their current job and put themselves into a state from where they can continue when the system wakes up. Similarly Windows vista is very fast to come back from the sleep state. When you open the lid of your laptop, you will find your system becomes instantly on, sometime you may wonder if it was on whole time.

Another goal is to reduce the power consumption when the system is idle. Normally we want to avoid long boot process of the computer, so we prefer to keep the system up 24X7. This may be nice to keep your system always ready to work but in this way we are wasting huge amount of power. Windows Vista’s sleep mode made dramatic change to reduce computer’s idle power consumption. While a typical Pentium 4 system uses 102.6 watts of power, same PC while in sleep consumes only 5.6 watts. Vista provides API for the application developers so that application can get notifications about the power scheme being used on the system and then adapt their behavior for the power scheme.

Using Microsoft group policy IT administrator of a Business organization can decide that all machines will go to sleep after specified time of inactivity. Normally in large organization tons of computers sitting idle and because of that huge power gets wasted. This feature must help them to reduce power wastage.

Tibia Security Guide: Avoid Getting Hacked!

Disclaimer: Reading this guide will not prevent you from being hacked but it will strongly reduce your chance on getting hacked.

1) Never give your password or account number to other people. Even if they say that they need it, or that they are Gamemasters, Tutors or Counsellors; you shouldn’t give it. Tibia or CIP-soft will never ask your account number of password. Don’t believe it when they tell you that you get a free premium account or free items. CIP (the makers of tibia), will never give away free premium account.

2) Never enter your password on other websites than tibia.com. There are some websites that promise you free items or free premium account or even other things, but these are hack sites. They want your account number and password to take all your items. Be careful too whit websites looking exactly the same than the official website. Keep in mind that tibia.com is the only official website.

3) Don’t make your password too easy, and don’t store the password or account number in a file on your computer. Good hackers will be able to hack your computer and read everything that is on it. Make also sure that they don’t hack your e-mail account because then they can hack your tibia account very easy. Use a firewall to protect yourself against hackers and viruses.

4) Never believe mails that CIP send you. Sometimes you get a mail from the official e-mail address from CIP-soft, but this is a hacking mail too. They say that you lose your account if you don’t click on the link and fill in the page, but you will just lose your account if you click on it. If you think that you have done something wrong, check your computer for viruses whit a virus scanner.

5) Don’t play tibia on a public computer like in a library, an internet bar, school… Maybe they can check the history and hack your account. There are hackers that can check everything you do on that computer very easy.

6) Don’t believe letters in your depot that you have won something like a free premium account or a trial period for premium account. If it is, it will stand on the website tibia.com. CIP is to busy to send mails or letters to every person. Also don’t believe it if you get free items. Latest sending a letter that you’ll get banned is very popular. Do not mail or visit (to) anything. This is not true, and you won’t get banned. CIP will never warn you of anything by in-game letters.

7) Don’t trade or share your account. Sometimes people ask you to share an account, but never do it because they can log in whit your character and take all your stuff, and sharing is against the rules. Never buy an account from another player. They sell it, and after you bought it, they just enter a recovery key password and they have the account back. It’s very easy to get hacked this way. And last but not least, account selling, buying, sharing or trading are forbidden and will result in a ban/deletion of all accounts taking part in it.

8) If you have Premium Account, you can personalise your account. It increases the safety of your account, and if you are hacked you can send a copy of your passport to get your account back. You also get a recovery key password. Write down this password, and if you are hacked you can enter it in the lost account interface to get your account back immediately. If you want to get rid of the key logger, try a virus scan, and if this doesn’t find anything reinstall windows (format your pc).

9) Don’t download any programs that help you whit playing tibia that aren’t from the official site .They will tell that it are great programs, and most of them does work, e.g. there are programs that eats, fishes, casts spells and make runes automatically or there are programs that you will never need a torch again… Never download these programs. Some of these programs are: Tibia GG, Tibia Proxy, AFK program… Btw, those programs are pretty useless after the last update. Also be careful with the place where you download TibiaCam. For experienced hackers it’s not very hard to put a key logger in it and republish it.

10) Installing a firewall will increase your security. Don’t tell around what firewall you use, so the hackers can’t put them down. Tell as less info about yourself and your pc as possible. The less they know, the better.
