6 Reasons To Go Back To Playing Minecraft [Gaming]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/minecrafthumb.jpg" alt="" />In case you haven’t heard, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/minecraft-version-10-arrives-november-18th-release-preview-news/">Minecraft was just officially released. Yes, the game has been available to play for a couple of years, but it was in beta. Now the beta label is gone and the game is considered – well, complete – but if you’ve ever bought it before, you can enjoy all the updates without having to pay another dime, even if you paid back when the game was just $15 (or less)!

Let’s take a look at a few reasons why it’s a good idea to give the game another whirl.

The Adventure Update

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/minecraftadventureupdate.jpg" alt="" width="512" height="352" />

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-survive-fight-online-game-minecraft/">Minecraft beta version 1.8, also known as the Adventure Update, was the biggest – or at least, the most interesting – update to Minecraft, ever. It arrived on September 12th and, as the same suggests, is aimed to provide players with a better adventure.

This means a lot of elements of the world were re-worked. Instead of terrain being generally similar across an entire pre-generated world, it’s now possible to find deserts and mountains and plains all in the same world. There are also new blocks, new monsters, new optical pre-generated structures like villages and strongholds (full of loot, but also baddies) and new combat mechanics.

New Roleplaying Elements

Role-playing has always been sort of assumed in Minecraft, sometimes to the point where players would customize their avatars using modifications. To help players advance, experience points were officially introduced in the Adventure Update and have been further refined for release, finally giving players some progression – as well as extra incentive for finding and killing monsters.

Experience is simply acquired by killing mobs, and it is spent at an Enchanting Table, where you can turn experience into special traits for items. You can create armor that protects against fire, tools that don’t break as quickly, and weapons that knock back enemies.

New Creatures

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/minecraftendermaneyes.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="350" />

When I first started playing the game, I only had a few things to worry about. Those were href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/zombies/">zombies, creepers, spiders and skeletons. That seemed like enough, but after playing for some time, it did become a bit old.

Now, Minecraft has a buffet of baddies to deal with. There’s gooey slimes, strange glowing-eye Endermen, and even skeletons riding spiders. There are also NPCs that can be helpful, like wolves, which will become tame and defend you if you feed it.

Hardcore Difficulty

During the initial phases of Minecraft’s popularity, a lot of people compared it to href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_Fortress">Dwarf Fortress. That actually wasn’t the best comparison, partly because Dwarf Fortress is a far more unforgiving game. Dwarves lost are dead forever, and it’s not hard to end up with everyone wiped out.

Now, players wanting to make those old comparisons more valid have their chance. Hardcore plays just like survival mode, but the difficulty is set locked on hard, and player death is permanent. Give it a stab and see how long you survive!

The Nether & The End

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/minecraftnether.jpg" alt="" width="551" height="343" />

In October 2010, Minecraft received a new realm called The Nether. It’s a different dimension that exists in all pre-generated worlds, and is only accessible via a portal. It’s a strange, dark world full of hostile mobs and lava, but it is also useful as a means of fast-travel, because movement in The Nether is multiplied by eight. Players can take advantage of this by building portals between locations.

Recently, as part of the final release, Minecraft saw the release of The End. This strange world, home of the Endermen, takes some considerable effort to even enter. It requires that a special portal be built, and players will have to visit dangerous and rare places (like strongholds) to find the right components.

You Can Beat The Game

The name of The End is not coincidental. If you’ve ever had the urge to actually beat Minecraft, it’s now possible to do so.

To do it, you need to craft a portal to The End, enter that strange realm, and then slay an incredible beast called the Enderdragon. This whole process take lots of patience, determination, and luck, so don’t think it will be a matter of just waltzing in and beating the Enderdragon a few hours later.

If you manage to beat the dragon you’ll be treated to an end credit sequence, and your character will earn an absurd amount of experience. You’ll also be able to obtain a Dragon Egg, though so far, they don’t hatch into anything.

Conclusion

Remember, if you’ve ever purchased Minecraft while it was in beta, you still have access to it and all of these changes now that the game is on its first release version. Since there’s no cost, going back is just a matter of reinstalling the game. Let us know what you think of the changes in the comments.

How To Use Find My iPhone To Get Your Stolen iPhone Back

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Find-my-iPhone-icon.png" alt="find my iphone app" />Long story short: my wife had her iPhone stolen when she misplaced it at work the other day. I was instantly able to log into her iCloud account and follow the device all the way back to a residential address, saving her the trouble of searching around the warehouse. We locked the phone and sent a polite message asking the ‘culprits’ to return it for a (very small) reward, but failing that we had their address to cross-reference on the employee database.

The next day we saw the phone travelling back to her workplace in the early morning, and when she arrived she found the phone had been anonymously returned with no reward asked for.

This story has a happy ending of course, but Apple’s free Find My iPhone service is also able to deal with the less happy outcomes in a way that minimizes your risk for greater losses. Let’s look into the app and see how you can ‘MakeUseOf’ it when your phone is lost or stolen.

So What is Find My iPhone?

Find My iPhone has been a part of Apple’s Mobile.Me service for a while now, and is now upgraded and included in the standard, free iCloud account. You can title="From MobileMe To iCloud: It’s Worth The Move" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mobileme-icloud-worth-move/">read all about iCloud here. The most recent update means that Mac computers can also be tracked. Here’s my wife’s iPhone, in the process of being stolen (this isn’t their home address, this was on the way).

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-90757" title="being-stolen" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/being-stolen.png" alt="find my iphone app" width="580" height="468" />

I must have it! How do I enable It?

1. Make sure you’ve signed up and enabled iCloud on your device. From Settings > iCloud you can sign up for, or if you’ve already got an account connected, scroll down and ensure Find My iPhone is enabled (by default it isn’t enabled).

2. Location service must also be enabled – from Settings > Location Services > On

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/location-servies.png" alt="find my iphone" width="580" height="435" /> /> 3. Scroll down on the same screen to Find my iPhone at the bottom of the list and click through to enable it specifically there.

To set it up on your Mac, you need to have the latest OSX, iTunes and iCloud specific updates installed. There should then be a new iCloud control panel icon in your preferences screen.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/icloud-imac.png" alt="find my iphone" width="580" height="435" />

What Can I do When My Phone Is Stolen:

Open up the Find my iPhone app from either any other iOS device (you need to href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8">download it from the app store first), or log on to href="http://icloud.com">icloud.com from a computer.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/icloudcom.png" alt="find my iphone" width="580" height="368" />

You should see a list of devices registered to your account, and location discovery will begin. Click on the device once it’s been located correctly.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/my-devices.png" alt="" width="314" height="275" />

You should now see it on a map, but clicking on the device, then the small blue “i” will open up the menu of actions you can take. There are 3 choices:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/found-location.png" alt="find my iphone app" width="404" height="358" />

  • Play Sound or Send Message: This allows you to send a quick “this message is lost/stolen” type message as well as sound an alarm which works even if the phone is in silent mode. Note, this is also a great way to find your phone at home!
  • Remote Lock: This places the device into a locked mode exactly as if you had setup a regular lock screen before it was stolen. You choose the 4 digit code now, so make sure you don’t forget it.
  • Remote Wipe: This is final and more drastic option – it will initiate a low level format of all your data, leaving it like a fresh iPhone straight from the factory. Be very careful when using this, as you will no longer be able to track, lock, or message this device if you use this option.

Your first move should be to lock the device and prevent any calls from being made. This isn’t going to stop anyone from reformatting the phone, but it will stop most thieves from getting at your data for now or making random expensive calls.

Second, follow the device via the GPS signal. If you’re the daring type, you could try chasing it down. It is probably best not to try anything crazy until you know it’s been stolen though, at which point calling the police with a residential address is definitely an option.

Next, send a message offering a reward and contact details.

At this point, you’re going to have to gamble. If it was indeed stolen, and the thief knows what they’re doing then your personal data is definitely at risk. Use remote wipe as a last option only if you’re confident you won’t get the device back.

Lastly, be sure to phone your mobile provider and lock out the SIM. This will prevent them making calls/texts and prevent any further expenses, but it’s not going to get your phone back.

It goes without saying that you should also call the police and get an incident or report number – you’ll need this to claim on insurance. Most contents insurance usually comes with the option to cover devices while they’re out of the house, so if you’re lucky then you can get a new phone.

A Solution for Android Users

Not wishing to exclude those inclined to the other mobile OS – title="How To Prepare Your Laptop For A Case Of Theft" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/prepare-laptop-case-theft/">Prey is a free service able to track up to 3 devices, and even has the ability to take photos of the thief using the laptop webcam or front camera. Sadly, Find My iPhone doesn’t let you do this, and I’m unable to find a similar app that does. The Prey page states they’re currently working on an iPhone version, but it’s been saying that for years. Looks like Android users have a one-up on us here!

I do recommend you enable some kind of service now as a precaution as you’ll never be able to do it when you’ll really need it. Find My iPhone is free, and if it saves you the $400 on a new phone, it’s more than worth it. Do you have any experience using Find My iPhone to get your phone back, or even a computer? Let us know in the comments, I’d love to hear how it worked out for you.

How To Simplify Google Search Results To Bring Back Old-Style Google

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/simplify-google-results.jpg" alt="simple search results" />While I am sure Google always has good intentions behind their new projects and features, you can’t please everyone. Many of the tweaks that have been introduced to search results pages have been found annoying by many users.

The search preview (working from the magnifying glass icon) keeps getting in the users’ way when they are trying to copy anything from search results or just browse further. A +1 button is too easy to click by mistake (and it can actually be distracting). The sidebar with search options moves the search results to the right and also distracts from the normal search process (especially if you never need the options).

While we are waiting for Google to give their users the choice (offering an easy way to switch any of the new features off from their own Options section), here are a few ways to simplify search results:

1. Use Google Mobile

This is the easiest and the quickest solution – just use the Google Mobile interface for your desktop browser.  Simply bookmark  class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/m">Google Mobile.

Here’s how you can add this search to your browser -  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-custom-search-engines-google-chrome/">Google Chrome, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/making-your-own-firefox-search-plugins-other-tips/">Firefox, class="vt-p" href="http://help.opera.com/Linux/9.52/en/search.html">Opera

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/simplify-google-results-02.jpg" alt="simple search results" width="521" height="452" />

2. Use A Combination Of User Scripts

We have covered quite a few tips previously – each tip helps to solve part of the problem; now combine them to get rid of all (or selected) annoyances:

  • Here is how you can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-ditch-google-search-sidebar/">get rid of the Google Search Sidebar (by using a Greasemonkey script or creating a search plugin. Note that the URL tweak mentioned in that post doesn’t seem to work any longer).
  • Find the tips on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/permanently-disable-google-instant-google-suggest/">disabling Google Instant and Google Suggest here (the last part contains some tips on disabling Google preview).
  • Finally, learn how to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rid-unwanted-redirects-google-search-results/">strip the Google tracking code from search result URLs (to easily copy target URLs right from search results pages).

Before:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/remove-redirects-02.jpg" alt="google search results" width="475" height="181" />

After:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/remove-redirects-01.jpg" alt="google search results" width="550" height="144" />

3. Use Third-Party Custom Searches

You can create Google custom searches yourself or you can use one of multiple already built Google search tools that strip everything except the actual search results.

Note however that the results through Google API can be somewhat different from what Google shows through their own normal web interface (for example custom search results class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/disable-googles-personalization-search-results/">will be depersonalized). However unless you are a search marketing professional who focuses on how Google ranks webpages), you are unlikely to ever notice the difference.

Here are two possible custom Google search tools to try using -  class="vt-p" href="http://www.d8search.com/">D8Search and class="vt-p" href="http://www.safe-find.com/">Safe-Find (the latter uses Google’s filtered SafeSearch technology to block adult material from your search results).

  • No tracking code in the URL: you can “Copy Link Location” and easily paste the full URL any time.
  • No Instant Preview and no +1 button.
  • No left-sidebar search options (D8Search moves some of the most useful options next to the search bar).
  • Unlike Google Mobile, these will also strip “Indented Results” (these are results from the same domains – Google usually shows them in one cluster). Both the Google Mobile and Custom search tools will strip Google Sitelinks (extra results from the same domain displayed in two columns).

Compare:

Normal search results (you can see the sitelinks in a red frame):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/simplify-google-results-03.jpg" alt="google search results" width="500" height="546" />

Google Mobile results (you can see “Indented Results” in the red frame):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/simplify-google-results-04.jpg" alt="simple search engine" width="500" height="377" />

Custom search results (one result per domain):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/simplify-google-results-01.jpg" alt="simple search results" width="550" height="376" />

As far as you can see, there’s no single good solution for those who only want to search and nothing else. However playing with various possible workarounds is likely to help you find what works for you. Good luck!

I’d love you to complete this tutorial with your own suggestions and tips!

Cloud Export: Back Up Your Online Data To Your Hard Drive [Windows & Ubuntu]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cloudbackup-icon.png?54167" alt="online data back up"/>Back up information you’re currently trusting the cloud with to your own hard drive. With support for most href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google/">Google products and a few others, including Twitter and IMAP mail, Cloud Export is a piece of software every cloud computing enthusiast should probably look into.

The cloud is great, but it’s out of your hands. Most of the time that’s fine, but there is always the chance that something goes wrong cloud-side. As such, if you really want to know that your information is safe, you should back it up yourself. That’s why the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/dataliberationfront-google-data-backup/">Data Liberation Front, a service provided by Google, offers guides for backing up Google products.

Guides are nice, but automated software is better. CloudExport is based on what Data Liberation offers; it’s just automated. It comes in the form of a Windows executable (which is easy to use) and a cross-platform python script (slightly less easy to use, but not impossible).

Using Cloud Export

Get started by href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/cloudexport/files/">downloading Cloud Export. You’ll find a .exe file for Windows users and a Python script for everyone else. Windows users can install as usual. Keep reading to find Ubuntu instructions.

Fire up Cloud Export and you’ll see a simple user interface. Click “Add new account” to get started:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-start.png?54167" alt="online data back up" width="579" height="226" />

As you can see, you’ll need to pick which things you want to back up. Click a general category and you’ll be presented with individual things you can backup:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-details.png?54167" alt="on line data back up" width="580" height="295" />

Select your services and enter your account information. Note that, to back up Gmail, you’ll need to href="http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77695">enable IMAP in Gmail.

One you’ve go everything set up you can start the backup process. This might take a long time, especially if you’re downloading all of your email, so be patient:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-downloading.png?54167" alt="on line data back up" width="580" height="194" />

Your files will be put wherever is configured in settings; by default a new “Export” folder is added to your user folder:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-files.png?54167" alt="on line data back up" width="580" height="174" />

As you can see, I backed up my contacts, calendar and photos. I was particularly happy to get my high-res photos from Picasa:

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-photos.png?54167" alt="how to back up data" width="578" height="141" />

Overall this is a great way to back up the cloud. Try it out yourself and let us know how you like it!

Currently Supported Cloud Backups

Cloud Backup supports a lot of services already. They are, according to the readme:

  • Normal Google accounts:
    • Contacts
    • Gmail
    • Reader
    • Picasa
    • Blogger
    • Health
    • Finance
    • Calendar
    • Talk
    • Docs
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-google-free-email-domain/">Google Apps accounts:
    • Contacts
    • Gmail
    • Calendar
    • Talk
    • Docs
  • Twitter
  • Identi.ca
  • RSS
  • XMPP/Jabber
  • IMAP (download email)
  • OFX

See an application you’d like to be included? You can href="http://www.nabber.org/contact/?subject=Cloud%20Export:%20New%20Application">request applications be added to CloudExport.

Ubuntu Instructions

Getting this working in Ubuntu is possible. You’ll need to install one package: python-tk. Install this using apt-get or href=""apt:python-tk">simply click here.

Once you’ve done that you simply need to make the file cloudexportw.py executable, then run it from the command line:

python cloudexportw.py

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cexport-ubuntu.png?54167" alt="online data back up" width="580" height="189" />

The process should be similar on other Linux systems; feel free to leave information about this in the comments below.

Conclusion

Backing up your information is important, but how many of us regularly back up information we store on the cloud? It doesn’t matter how much you love and trust the companies that are storing your data for you; something could eventually go wrong. If that happens, you’ll be glad you backed up your information.

Do you think it’s worthwhile, though? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, along with any other tips for backing up cloud services. />

    Nurse Windows Back To Health With System Speedup Pro [Giveaway]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/360amigo.jpg" />Unfortunately, your Windows installation isn’t going to remain fast, speedy and well-behaved forever. Nothing quite beats a fresh installation, but if you’d rather not go through the process of restoring all your documents, drivers and personal settings then maybe href="http://www.360amigo.com/">System Speedup Pro from 360Amigo can help.

    It does what it says right on the tin – checks your PC for known problems affecting performance and attempts to restore some of the speed you once had to your tattered operating system. We’re literally giving away 25 copies (worth almost $500!), so read on to find out how you can win!

    id="more-62988">

    Features

    href="http://www.360amigo.com/en/features">360Amigo System Speedup Pro is the commercial branch of the company’s System Speedup product, and features a number of improvements over its free counterpart. Both versions are compatible with most recent versions of Microsoft Windows including 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista and 7.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63000" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/main.png" alt="" width="580" height="420" />

    The application serves as a 3-in-1 tool for improving PC performance. Within the package, you get a system cleaner, system optimiser and a set of disk tools.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62999" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/junkfiles.png" alt="" width="348" height="275" />

    The system cleaner provides a one-click solution to fixing your computer problems. System Speedup Pro scans your hard disks for known “junk data” such as temporary files that are no longer required and automatically converts them to juicy, usable disk space.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63001" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/results.png" alt="" width="403" height="236" />

    Common problems are fixed instantly (no pesky confirmations) and the scanner will also check your registry for problems too. Privacy is also a concern, and traces of personal data can be deleted permanently using the scanner.

    If you’re not the most organised of people then you can also schedule scans (a feature only found in the Pro version) for a time that best suits you.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63002" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/scheduler.png" alt="" width="522" height="377" />

    In addition to the very capable scanner, System Startup Pro can also be used to optimize other areas of your Windows PC. The program can check your disks when Windows boots and decide whether you’ve got any unnecessary programs in your startup (trust me, you probably have). Pruning your startup list is a sure-fire way to regain precious performance, so it’s a relief to see it included.

    You can also view a complete list of currently active connections with the included NetState tool, so you can monitor internet activity and keep tabs on your bandwidth and there’s even a bundled disk defragmenter (why not?).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62997" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/connections.png" alt="" width="460" height="256" />

    The disk tools included with 360Amigo are a big added bonus, including the ability to scan for and remove unneeded applications, a file recovery tool and a tool for managing and removing old System Restore points.

    Finally, for when you do decide to format your PC, you can even show a list of currently installed drivers. A nice touch, and one that makes reinstalling Windows that little bit easier.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62998" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/drivers.png" alt="" width="549" height="295" />

    360Amigo System Speedup Pro provides an easy way for users to tackle computer problems without going through the hassle of doing it by hand. This is especially good for those who dread the thought of reinstalling Windows, resolving driver issues and starting from scratch.

    How do I win a copy?

    A Document Scanning And Storage Tool – Read & Back Up Documents!

    Posted on 29 July 2010. Tags: , , , , , ,

    In the event that you’re starting to hunt for a document scanning and storage tool and you’re wondering which one would work best for you, then you just have to listen to some good advice on the subject that should greatly simplify your search for the best scanner for you. Choosing to use a mobile scanner can greatly enhance the way you handle digital data, including when the safeguarding of irreplaceable printable data is concerned. Rather than making an impulsive purchase, we recommend that you browse the information that follows.

    Like any other current and sophisticated hardware device, portable scanners have become easy to learn and to get comfortable with. These scanners are useful for a multitude of scanning tasks, for instance, business contacts, expenses, travel claims, checks or bank statements, etc. In a matter of seconds they yield amazing image quality in formats ranging from images to text. In most cases nowadays, the outlay for a document scanning and storage tool can be considered a wise investment for your home and office needs.

    One of the most popular qualities of these handheld scanners is the simplicity of using them no matter where you are. Installed on the scanners is the latest software which makes it easy to create high-quality output from whatever you choose to scan and save the image or data in a number of different ways. Let’s say you need to scan an id card. the scanner extracts the ‘snapshot’ of the card, the cardholder’s photo and signature, and all the text of the id card arranged in appropriate files, which can then be exported to a clipboard or another software program.

    Before shopping for a document scanning and storage tool we advise you to go through the following list of tips: (1) what will your scanner’s main purpose be? (2) search the internet for scanners you think might fit your needs; (3) compare the scanners’ technical pros and cons; (4) make sure the manufacturer is reliable and make sure the customer feedback is mostly positive; (5) establish freight charges and procedures for returns.

    Anti-Virus Software Fighting Back Against Computer Infections

    Posted on 10 July 2010. Tags: , , , , , ,

    Many computer users adopt the ‘it will never happen to me’ policy, but there are a number of computer viruses out there just waiting to infect and destroy the information contained on their hard-drive. This is why companies invented anti-virus software, which is a program that automatically helps to detect the presence of viruses on a computer or in a file before it is opened.

    Click to Free Download Best Spyware Removal Software

    Anyone who spends a considerable amount of time surfing the internet, visiting unfamiliar websites or downloading photographs is at a higher risk for computer viruses than those who do not. Computer viruses are typically attached to word processing documents, computer programs and images which, if downloaded, may instantly affect the computer’s performance.

    If a computer virus infects a computer, the owner may immediately lose everything in their computer and may be forced to use the factory restore disk. This CD, which is accompanied by most new computers, will restore the computer to it’s original factory settings.

    Anti-virus software is quite affordable considering it’s wealth of use. Without it, computer users are at constant risk for computer viruses. Anti-virus software can generally be found at any computer manufacturer’s website, retail store’s electronic department or online at many retailers selling computers.

    Click to Free Download Best Spyware Removal Software

    Anyone who suspects that their computer may be infected with a virus should refrain from sending any e-mail messages or uploading photos to family or friends. Otherwise, the virus may spread to infect their computers as well.

    Anti-virus software is available most commonly on a CD-Rom, but may also be downloaded from some manufacturers. By double clicking on the software, the anti-virus program will begin to perform a scan of your entire computer. As it progresses, it will give you an update on any potential located viruses or files that may be of concern. In addition, some anti-virus software will allow users to scan a single file before opening it. For example, if a computer user were to download an image but wanted to run a virus scan on it prior to opening the file, he/she could click on the anti-virus software and direct it toward the file in question. The anti-virus program would scan the file for potential viruses and will post the results immediately on the computer screen. This will allow the computer user to know which files are safe and which are not.

    In today’s world, anti-virus software is to computers as Tylenol is to headaches. It’s both a preventative approach and a cure for certain ailments affecting a computer. If a user does not have anti-virus software pre-installed into their computer, it is recommended that they purchase a program immediately before logging on to the internet.

    Anti-virus Software for Back to School

    Posted on 08 July 2010. Tags: , , ,

    As parents, college students and kids alike prepare for the back-to-school season, there are plenty of things on everyone’s minds. While university enrollees prepare to throw down hundreds on college textbooks, younger students are getting their school supplies lists from new teachers. However, there is one item that should be on every new school year list: anti-virus software.

    These days, most every student uses a computer for homework, research and we cannot forget about games and music downloads. Using a PC is nearly mandatory in anyone’s daily life in the 21st century, especially a student’s. For many college students, heading back to campus means connecting their wireless routers to the university network, which may pose a greater threat than the Web connection from the comfort of your home.

    The Information Age has opened doors to countless benefits, but also pitfalls. More students are expected to email professors or teachers with file after attached file of book reports and research papers. What about online classes? Many college campuses require students to participate in Web portal classroom discussions and work critiques, which utilizes file sharing.

    Anti-virus software is a key component of any student’s desktop or notebook PC, mainly because of the high volume of downloads, emails and files that are sure to make their way into each and every computer. According to a consumer survey, about 78% of respondents intend to spend the most on school supplies, coming in over apparel and book bags. While school supplies used to mean folders, pens and post-it’s, items like anti-virus software are becoming the norm and the necessary. After all, the more you use a computer, the better your security and virus protection must be.
