Make The Web A Better Reading Place With The New Readability

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/00-Reading.jpg" border="0" alt="new readability" />The Internet might be a great source of information, but it’s not always a great place to read that information. Some web owners try too hard to monetize their site that all of the advertisements prevent visitors from having a nice reading experience. Then there are also the other factors that make the situation worse, such as bad page layouts and poor combinations of fonts and background colors. That’s why web reading tools like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/make-that-web-pages-text-easier-on-the-eyes-with-readable-any-platform/">Readable, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/readability/">Readability, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/instapaper-bookmark-posts-read/">Instapaper, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/print-create-pdf-from-webpages-pdf-files-webpages-joliprint/#comments">Joliprint have become indispensable partners for many Internet users.

To give general web users a better reading and writing environment, Readability – one of the pioneers in web reading technology – has rolled out its href="https://www.readability.com/">new version. This new Readability focuses not only on the readers, but also on web publishers.

id="more-67925">

From Bookmarklets To Add-Ons

Basically, web services like Readability will convert any webpage into a more read-friendly format. To know more about the concept, let’s watch this short introduction video.

classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=19267888&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=ffffff&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=19267888&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=ffffff&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

The old version of Readability relied on a Javascript bookmarklet for the conversion. Users would install the bookmarklet on their browser’s bookmark bar, and every time they wanted to have a more read-friendly version of a webpage, they would have pressed the bookmarklet.

Even though the bookmarklet is still functional, the New Readability utilizes browser add-ons to carry out the conversion task. To get the add on for your browser, click the “Get the Add-On” button on Readability’s href="https://www.readability.com">main page.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/07a-Readability-Get-Add-On.png" border="0" alt="new readability" width="580" height="160" />

The site will detect what browser you use and give you the download link accordingly.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08a-Readability-Install-Add-On.jpg" border="0" alt="make website readable" width="350" height="420" />

After the download is finished, install the add-on. In my experiment, the Safari version of the Readability add-on required a manual installation.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08b-Readability-Install.jpg" border="0" alt="make website readable" width="530" height="250" />

After a quick installation, the Readability add-on button will appear next to the URL field.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08c-Readability-Add-On-Installed-2.jpg" border="0" alt="make website readable" width="450" height="100" />

You can enable or disable the add-on from the Preferences window.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08c-Readability-Extensions-Settings.jpg" border="0" alt="making websites readable" width="580" height="436" />

Using The Add-On

To see the differences between the old and new version of Readability, I opened a MakeUseOf page and pressed the Readability button. The article page was quickly converted into a clean, easy-to-read page. But so far, it’s more or less similar to the old version.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08z-Readability-Result.jpg" border="0" alt="making websites readable" width="580" height="392" />

The big difference is in the tool sidebar. Along with the familiar “Reload” and “Print” buttons, the new version also gives users tools to quickly change the page layout according to their preferences. Click one of the boxes under “Font & Color” and the layout will change into a pre-defined layout.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08g-Readability-Appearance.jpg" border="0" alt="making websites readable" width="580" height="420" />

The tool will also let users quickly change the width of the text area and also the font size, which is useful if you have sight problems.

If you prefer clean text for your articles, Readability lets you “convert links to footnotes“. No more blue-underlined text as every link will now go to the end of the article. You can also hide the images within the article if you want to.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08i-Readability-Links-2-Footnotes.jpg" border="0" alt="08i Readability Links 2 Footnotes" width="580" height="280" />

Another additional feature on the sidebar is the sharing button. Now you can easily share the article that you are currently reading via Twitter, Email and Facebook. Readability goes one step further by providing you with a shortened URL of the article.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/08j-Readability-Share-Article.jpg" border="0" alt="08j Readability Share Article" width="580" height="280" />

More Publisher Friendly

The problem with most services like Readability is that they are not publisher friendly. Stripping down a webpage into the clean, easy-to-read format also means stripping out all of the publisher’s income.

To solve this problem, Readability offers a paid subscription model to its users. Subscribers can choose how much money they are willing to pay every month (with the minimum amount being US$ 5.00). Readability will then give 70% of the money to writers and publishers, while keeping the remaining 30% to maintain and improve the service.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/09a-Readability-Subscribe.jpg" border="0" alt="09a Readability Subscribe" width="580" height="386" />

To make the offer more compelling, paid subscribers will get more features compared to free users, such as the ability to save articles to read later and also mobile access to the saved articles.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/09b-Readability-Feature-Comparison.jpg" border="0" alt="09b Readability Feature Comparison" width="380" height="210" />

If you are a writer or publisher and you want to participate in the program, you can add the “Reading Buttons” on your website(s). Adding the buttons is as easy as embedding the provided script.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/09c-Readability-Reading-Button.jpg" border="0" alt="09c Readability Reading Button" width="580" height="280" />

Also don’t forget to register your site to join the “Readability movement“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/09e-Register-Your-Site.jpg" border="0" alt="new readability" width="580" height="300" />

As a reader, I think the New Readibility is way better than the old one. Especially with the addition of quick layout and sharing tools. As a writer, I think the paid subscription model offered by Readibility might be one of the solutions to provide readers with a more comfortable reading environment while keeping that environment publisher friendly.

Make Better Use Of Multiple Twitter Accounts With SharedMinds

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/smlogo.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts" width="150" height="150" />When it comes to using Twitter, I’ve always stuck to either using the Twitter website or using an IM client that happens to be Twitter-enabled. I’ve tried a few of the Twitter clients that were reviewed here at MUO, like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/seesmic-look-a-new-free-twitter-tool-for-the-non-geek-windows/">Seesmic or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/send-longer-tweets-tweetdeck-deckly-news/">Tweetdeck and even some of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-cool-web-based-alternatives-to-tweetdeck-and-seesmic-desktop/">the alternatives that Mahendra covered further back.

In every case I found that the desktop client fell short in some feature that I needed. This was especially true once I started managing several Twitter accounts, and logging in and out of accounts in order to send individual tweets just wasn’t an option. I needed something light on resources, fast, efficient and very easy to switch between accounts. After testing a bunch of different clients, I’ve finally settled on an interesting client you may or may not have heard about called href="http://bsix12.com/smd/">SharedMinds Desktop.

id="more-66072">

Set Up Your Accounts & Get Started

Getting started on SharedMinds took about 20 to 30 seconds, literally. There was no online account sign-up and no painful account setup procedures. I just installed the software, launched it, typed in my multiple Twitter account credentials and that was it. SharedMinds was plugged into everything I do on Twitter.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/sharedminds1.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts" width="507" height="303" />

Once you sign in with your Twitter accounts, all tweets from your friends you’re following on all of those accounts will show up in the tweet pane. I just have to say that of all desktop Twitter clients, SharedMinds really makes it intuitive and simple to monitor and use as many Twitter accounts as you like.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66074" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared2.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts free" width="566" height="418" />

Do you want to only see activity on one account at a time? No problem, just scroll down to the “Current View” section on the left navigation bar and change the “Account Filter” dropdown to whatever account you’d like to use at any given time.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared4.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts free" width="227" height="240" />

Of course, no Twitter client is complete unless it can view the Twitter public timeline. SharedMinds can do this, and it also lets you quickly look through currently trending topics or perform searches on all public tweets, all from the comfort of your desktop client.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared3.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts free" width="534" height="412" />

I also really like the layout of the preview pane more than just about any other client I’ve seen. You can see not only the actual tweet, but there’s a quick little profile preview of the person that issued the tweet, complete with Twitter stats and website. At the top of the preview pane you can click on tabs that let you view all of that person’s recent tweets, the actual Twitter profile page, the link that they tweeted, or all recent mentions of that user.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66077" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared5.jpg" alt="multiple twitter accounts" width="437" height="274" />

By the way, when you click to view the embedded link, SharedMinds will show you the website within the preview pane itself – it’s an embedded browser window. You can literally view everything within this fully functioning desktop application.

One of the most important aspects of a Twitter client is how quickly and easily you can respond to tweets in some way. SharedMinds manages to pack all of the functionality you need into a small space. The fastest way to react to a tweet is to hover your mouse over the profile icon, and you’ll see four little icons show up – reply, direct message, retweet or other options.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared7.jpg" alt="multiple twitter accounts" width="297" height="297" />

What are the other options? Well, if you right click on the tweet itself, you’ll see a menu list of all of the available actions you can take. These include searching Twitter for more tweets from that user, following or unfollowing the user, or retweeting and replying. Once again, this is an area SharedMinds makes multiple accounts a breeze, because you can use the dropdown accounts list in this menu to quickly change which Twitter account will take the action you select. It doesn’t get any more painless than that!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared6.jpg" alt="multiple twitter accounts" width="353" height="374" />

When it comes to issuing your own tweets, SharedMinds has you covered. Yes, you can just type in your tweet and hit enter, but you could also attach an image to your tweet, quickly shorten URL’s you’ve included, or “TweetShrink” some long entry you’ve typed so that it fits within Twitter’s limits. You’ve even got spell check built in!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66080" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared8.jpg" alt="" width="325" height="193" />

One of the biggest pet peeves I had with a number of the other Twitter desktop clients, aside from the fact that using multiple accounts was a real chore, is the docking issue. If you just want to slide the display of tweets over to the right or left side of the screen, you really need a way to shrink down the desktop app into a single column. Many other clients won’t easily let you do this, but SharedMinds lets you “unpin” the navigation bar and remove the preview pane so that the final screen looks like below.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/shared9.jpg" alt="manage multiple twitter accounts" width="312" height="414" />

If you do need to navigate, just hover your mouse over the navigation button and it’ll pop out. After you move your mouse off it, it collapses back to the left. It really is a brilliant Twitter client that I’m pleased and excited I finally discovered. Even if you swear by other clients, give SharedMinds a shot and let us know what you think.

Manage Your Unread RSS Feeds Better With These Tips

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/00.jpg" alt="manage rss feeds" width="270" height="195" />You may have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-feeds-work-simple-terms-technology-explained/">RSS feeds accumulating dust over time, but that unfortunately doesn’t mean the number of unread items will kindly reduce for you. Usually, the feeds (find some interesting ones href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-rss-feeds-motivational-quotes-day/">here) get updated often and increase daily so in order to catch up with the reading, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/enjoy-fullblown-visual-rss-feeds-feedlooks/">displaying your feeds somewhere more accessible or at least, have them come to you may prove useful.

What’s better than showing you your feeds to read right on your desktop? You could benefit from any built-in gadgets that can show you bits of news to help you catch up with unread pieces.

id="more-65469">

Be Selective With The Feeds You’re Trying To Keep Up With

In order to reduce the number of items to read, you could also narrow down the topics you’re interested in, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/edit-existing-rss-feeds-yahoo-pipes/">edit the RSS feed yourself (unless your favorite blog offers feeds by categories)  to remove items that you’re not going to read or care about anyway. If you want to be in total control of what shows up in your feeds, you can also href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-create-an-rss-feed-for-your-site-from-scratch/">create your own feeds by learning a bit of code.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/111.png" alt="manage rss feeds" width="462" height="213" />

To save yourself some time, there’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-online-alternatives-standard-rss-readers/">Skeedy, a web-based app that helps you follow your favorite topics, instead of any specific blogs. You could also try your luck with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/summarize-website-rss-feeds-easily-tldrit/">tldr.it, which summarizes long articles or frequently-updated feeds to smaller, more manageable versions.

Making Your Feeds Come To You (Display Them On Desktop)

If you’re more like me and have a few favorite blogs you’re always looking forward to read but don’t have enough time, consider displaying your feeds on your desktop with gadgets for Windows. While Windows Vista’s sidebar gadgets often left the user with more to be desired, Windows 7’s gadgets have a few additional features. You can make the gadgets a bit bigger, and for the feeds gadget, you can even add and edit the feeds (which I don’t think you could do in Vista).

The list of feeds on the feeds gadget by default are, according to Internet Explorer 7 , the feeds you’ve subscribed to and ones that you might be interested in. In order to add your favorite blogs to the RSS reader gadget in Windows 7, you’ll need to first visit the webpage you wish to see on your desktop (for instance, CNN) in Internet Explorer and subscribe to the feed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="348" height="274" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/31.jpg" alt="" width="447" height="318" />

You can double-check that you’ve added the site by going to Favorites > Feeds. Now, right-click on the desktop and select Gadgets.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="235" height="316" />

Once the gadgets show up, add the RSS gadget and click on the wrench icon for Options on the side of the gadget.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0.5.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="348" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/52.jpg" alt="unread rss reader" width="380" height="229" />

You should now have the recently added feed in the drop-down list.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/61.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="379" height="262" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/71.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="377" height="267" />

You can now select how many entries to display and click OK. If you resize the widget, you’ll probably get a better view of the feeds.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/9.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="243" />

The benefit of having a gadget on Windows 7 is that it won’t be too resource-intensive and you don’t need to download anything extra, just a tiny bit of set up in Internet Explorer.

Using additional, third-party RSS feed viewer gadgets include href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=bb23ed80-d97c-43b3-bdc0-bfebb73c481c&bt=8">Feed Viewer, href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=cff1abbd-2cc8-4afa-9043-22912db23490&bt=1">Hermes auto-scrolling reader and href="http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=7c034078-195c-40d1-a2f0-8394d0b036df&bt=1&pl=1">RSS Reader Plus can be a great idea because they are usually steps above the simple (built-in) RSS reader. With RSS Reader Plus, for instance, you can customize everything in the feed displayed, including fonts, color and sizes.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/10.jpg" alt="unread feeds" width="315" height="708" />

It even provides scrolling text, especially useful when you’re trying to get an overhead of everything that’s being expressed. One thing about the RSS Reader Plus is that it’s currently very young so there are typos in the gadget.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/desktop.jpg" alt="manage rss feeds" width="525" height="330" />

If you prefer full-blown programs, you could benefit from using href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feedling-read-feeds-pc-desktop-windows/">Feedling, which sticks your feeds on top of your wallpaper, perfect for this purpose (see Timmy’s screenshot above). Don’t forget there are many traditional desktop applications, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/desktop-google-reader-awesome-rss-reader-syncs-google/">the cross-platform Google Reader app, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-bandit-impressive-open-source-desktop-feed-reader/">the open-source RSS Bandit.

    Twezr – Better Way To Stay In Sync With Your Friends And Contacts [iPhone]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1227.png" alt="twezr iphone" width="194" height="194" />How close are you with the people you have listed under Contacts on your phone? My guess is pretty close, seeing as you take them with you everywhere you go. If this is the case, I would also bet that you reach some of these people in multiple ways, like Twitter perhaps, or Facebook.

    class="vt-p" href="http://twezr.com/">Twezr gives your contact list a major upgrade while still enabling you to see your friends and other contacts in the same place. If you have an iPhone, Twezr is an essential app. Imagine being able to look at the contact list on your phone and see emails from your friends, Facebook messages, and direct messages on Twitter, all in one place. See the benefits?

    id="more-63616"> /> In this article, I’ll be taking you through the ins and outs of this application, showing you everything you can do with it.

    What Can I Do With Twezr?

    Twezr is your personal organizer – the best way to stay in sync with your close friends and co-workers.

    Essentially, class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twezr-your-contacts-email/id379278108?mt=8#">Twezr (App Store link) organizes all of your contacts for you. It takes all of the content they’ve shared with you (emails, tweets, etc.) and it puts it in one place on your phone. This allows you to quickly view and respond to the people you’re closest with, even if you aren’t near your computer. No longer will you have to spend all of your excess time logging in and out of your various accounts or running different apps.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1229.png" alt="twezr iphone" width="333" height="476" />

    One of Twezr’s key features includes generating a prioritized To See list with your contacts. It’s what tells you when you have shared items from your friends via email, Facebook, and Twitter.

    You can also prioritize your contacts based on how frequently you’ve interacted with them, which offers you a way of sorting your contact list by the people you talk to and interact with the most. Twezr organizes all of the messages you get so they’re easy to sift through.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1229_001.png" alt="twezr app" width="332" height="478" />

    Aside from seeing when you get a message, you can also read and respond to your emails, DMs, tweets, and wall posts right within the app. If you have multiple Twitter or Facebook accounts, you can view those too. You can also post status updates on multiple accounts, which is a key feature.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1230.png" alt="twezr app" width="332" height="478" />

    Think incoming messages will be hard to keep track of with Twezr? The app also features an intuitive color-coding system, as well as multiple viewing options, like sorting by contact, message type, or platform.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1230_001.png" alt="twezr app" width="335" height="479" />

    Lastly, the search capabilities you get with Twezr are phenomenal. You can run a full text search across all your email and incoming messages, as well as search all your contacts by their first/last name, email address, company name, or Twitter handle.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-17_1230_002.png" alt="twezr iphone" width="332" height="477" />

    To view some of the benefits you’ll be getting with Twezr, check out this short class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQXDhx10h4I&feature=player_embedded">YouTube video:

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cQXDhx10h4I?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cQXDhx10h4I?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Conclusion

    Twezr lets you combine the profiles of all your contacts across iPhone, Microsoft Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, IMAP accounts, Facebook, and Twitter and it creates a single comprehensive profile for each.

    One thing I forgot to mention was how easily you can make phone calls, send SMS, email, Facebook, or Twitter messages with Twezr, which is definitely a plus. All-in-all, I was thoroughly impressed with this iPhone app. What do you think of it? />

    Is The New Twitter Better Than Desktop Clients?

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/twitter-icon-copy.png" alt="twitter client you don't have to download" width="240" height="240" />Integrated pictures, keyboard shortcuts, a decent way to track conversations and a slick new look. That’s what some users of Twitter found recently, and they were really happy. Twitter isn’t sure how long it will take to push these features out to everybody, but if you primarily use Twitter from a client such as Tweetdeck or Gwibber you may have access and not know it.

    We at MakeUseOf don’t hide our love for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gwibber-the-everything-client/">Twitter. You can class="vt-p" href="http://twitter.com/#!/MakeUseOf/staff">find the entire MakeUseOf staff on Twitter, and most of us are pretty active there.

    Our articles about Twitter, though, largely revolve around ways to avoid going to the site altogether.

    id="more-54652"> /> For example, I recently pointed out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-linux-twitter-clients/">five Linux Twitter clients you’ve probably never heard of and Steve recommended you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-great-reasons-seesmic-desktop-2-twitter-client/">use Seesmic Desktop 2 as your Twitter client. The new Twitter might convince people like us to stop using a client and use Twitter directly. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the new Twitter, as compared to desktop clients.

    First Off: Do I Have It?

    A lot of people are wondering how to tell if they have access to the new Twitter. Well, you probably don’t; Twitter’s not sure how long it will take to roll out to all users. To find out for sure head over to class="vt-p" href="http://twitter.com">Twitter.com and look for a message like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-turn-on.png" alt="twitter client you don't have to download" width="419" height="91" />

    If you see that, all you need in order to try out the new Twitter is click the yellow button. If you don’t see that I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for a while, but keep reading to see what’s coming up later. Switching back to the old Twitter is as simple as clicking your name in the top-right corner, then clicking “leave preview”.

    What’s New?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-left.png" alt="twitter client" width="527" height="306" />

    The first thing you’ll notice is that everything is wider. Like before there are two main panels, the left and the right. The left panel does largely what it did before – displaying tweets – and the right panel does largely the same thing as well – displaying information such as who you’re following and what topics are currently trending.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-right.png" alt="best twitter client" width="380" height="354" />

    So, at first it looks like this is the same old Twitter, albeit a much wider one. But it’s not. Click on a Tweet and the right panel becomes useful. For example, if there’s a link to a picture, you’ll see the picture:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-media.png" alt="" width="576" height="270" />

    If the tweet is part of a conversation, you’ll see the rest of the conversation:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/twitter-conversation.png" alt="best twitter client" width="580" height="377" />

    You get the idea; the right panel includes information to give the tweet context. Even if there’s no picture, or no conversation, you’ll see information about people mentioned in the tweet. It’s all about giving context to the little piece of information Twitter encourages us all to push out every day, which I think is welcome.

    You’ll also notice that your profile has a little room to breathe now, giving more emphasis to your location and bio than the old interface:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-profile.png" alt="best twitter client" width="562" height="213" />

    Finally, for those of you who resent having use a mouse to browse your tweets, the new interface provides you with a handy supply of keyboard shortcuts. Press “?” and you’ll see a list.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/newtwitter-keyboard.png" alt="twitter client you don't have to download" width="579" height="264" />

    Get to know those and you could save a lot of time browsing Twitter (or, perhaps more realistically, waste a lot more time browsing Twitter).

    What’s Missing?

    If you consider yourself an avid user of TweetDeck or Gwibber, you might notice a few key features are missing here. The biggest problem, for me, is the lack of support for automatic URL shortening. There might be a Firefox or Chrome plugin to solve this problem, I realize, but it would be really nice for such a functionality to be built in.

    The other main advantage Twitter clients have over Twitter itself? Integration with other services. I know, I know, Twitter isn’t going to natively support Facebook or LinkedIn messages anytime soon, but to me that’s the entire appeal of a client.

    Still, overall I have to say Twitter is now an impressive alternative to any client. I’ll be using it a lot more now than I ever did before.

    What about you guys? Do you yet have access to the new Twitter? If so, do you like it? Or did you turn it off almost right away? Sharing in the comments below is an awesome thing to do, and if you have the new Twitter it just might make Mark very jealous. />

    Power Tab Editor: Can Free Tablature Software Make You A Better Guitarist?

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/guitar2.jpg" alt="free guitar tablature" width="199" height="260" />Paul McCartney cannot read class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-6-sites-to-find-and-print-free-sheet-music-nb/">sheet music, and nor can I. The internet has done wonders for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/essential-guitar-tools-and-software/">budding bedroom musicians all over the world. Since the rise in the popularity of free guitar tablature websites, it is now possible to conduct a quick search and learn how to play some of your favourite songs without actually reading music.

    For those of you still in the dark, guitar tabs offer a visual representation of a guitar’s fretboard except instead of notes and musical symbols you get numbers and letters. Each line represents a string, each number represents a fret – anything extra, like bends and slides are added with good old ASCII characters.

    Simple? Well yes and no.

    id="more-52583"> /> The only problem with guitar tabs lies in their approachability and ease of use. As the concept isn’t that deep, some important bits – like timing – are overlooked. This means that if you haven’t class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stream-music-for-free-with-spotify-invites-available/">got the song on in the background (or a perfect memory, of course) then getting it spot-on can be frustrating.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/nothingelse.jpg" alt="free guitar tablature" width="506" height="245" />

    Enter Power-Tab, a free guitar tablature editor with MIDI accompaniment. The software is aimed at both composers and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/zentao-free-electric-guitar-lessons-absolute-beginners/"> average Joes looking to learn a few songs. The interface looks complicated, but if your only request from the software is to learn a song or two you’ll soon get nicely acquainted with the Play button – which is all you need.

    Those of you who fancy using the software to its fullest potential will find a cornucopia of features, but it certainly helps if you’ve had a bit of experience writing music before. As you construct your tab, Power Tab Editor will transcribe your numbers and letters into actual sheet music – a very nice touch.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tabsheet.jpg" alt="guitar tablature" width="540" height="326" />

    Tabbing music is a simple case of choosing a string and assigning a numerical number. You can use the keyboard for this, and though it may seem an arduous process the features provided in the software make for a powerful tool.

    Anyone Can Play Guitar

    The software does a great job of providing you with a true-sounding MIDI representation that’s perfect for helping decide rhythm and tempo. This does of course depend on the skill and determination of the person who originally tabbed the song, but if you find a few good sources (more on that later) you’ll be rocking out in no time.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/northingelsept.jpg" alt="guitar tablature" width="561" height="551" />

    Head over to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.power-tab.net/">official website to download Power-Tab, the .ZIP file you need is just a little under 6MB. Once you’ve downloaded, extract and run the set-up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/installing.jpg" alt="guitar tablature" width="515" height="422" />

    Once you’ve installed and had a quick play, you’ll probably want to find a few songs to learn. The internet holds the key to a great number of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-cool-websites-with-guitar-tuning-tones/">guitar-related tools and you can download Power Tab (.PTB) files from a couple of good sources, though the developers are reluctant to link or provide any on their site.

    One of the best sources for .PTB files (and everything else guitar-related) is class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/">Ultimate-Guitar. The Russian-hosted site has grown exponentially since 1998 and now hosts an impressive collection of normal tabs, Guitar Pro tabs and precious .PTB files.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/ug.jpg" alt="free guitar tablature" width="565" height="400" />

    This is the first place I go to when I want a tab, and the whole portal provides news, reviews and a regular stream of new tabs. If all else fails then there’s always class="vt-p" href="http://www.911tabs.com/power_tabs/">911Tabs, a search engine which crawls other tablature websites and has a section dedicated to Power Tabs.

    Conclusion

    If you often find yourself stuck when it comes to rhythm and timing when trying to play your favourite songs then you’ll probably find Power Tab Editor to be a welcome addition to your Windows PC. Those of you who’ve “always wanted to tab something” will find this one easy to learn with plenty of features to map out some of the most complicated solos. It probably won’t make you a better guitarist overnight, but any software that can help teach you guitar for free deserves a look-in.

    Google: ?we Want to Make All Browsers Better?

    Google released the web browser Chrome in September. But why were they doing it? How would it affect their relationship with Mozilla? And did they really include a mode specifically designed to allow users to view porn anonymously? Zeta throws these questions, and more, at Anthony House, Google UK’s Communications & Public Affairs Manager

    What was the impetus for developing a browser?
    As Google employees, we spend most of our time doing everything from requesting vacation time to writing documents in Google Docs to filing expense reports through the web browser. And so we are probably more aware than most people of the opportunities and limits of web browsers generally. It’s not anything to do with animosity towards other browsers but we thought that we could make some unique contributions technologically. We’ve put all the code online now and you can see that we’ve taken some code from Firefox, code from WebKit and added our own things. Even if people don’t use Chrome, we’re hoping that Google is contributing to making all browsers better by making the code open source.

    How does Chrome differ to other browsers?
    We wanted to give people another option but we didn’t want to make life more difficult for developers. So we didn’t build our own rendering engine. Google Chrome is actually built on top of the WebKit rendering engine. Any web page that works on Safari, which is also a WebKit based browser, should work on Chrome. Beyond that, we wanted to make sure that people could have as fast, as safe and as stable a browsing experience as possible. The bells and whistles that you see in Google Chrome aren’t the type that immediately lend themselves to the eye. For instance, we developed our own JavaScript engine, called V8, which deals with JavaScript in a way that traditional JavaScript engines haven’t. It makes JavaScript more stable and also faster and avoids memory leaks. And we wanted it to be simple. We wanted to make the user interface very clean, we wanted to make it intuitive to use. Whatever powerful computer science is going on behind the scenes, we wanted it to be straightforward for people to use.

    Google recently extended its agreement with the Mozilla Foundation to provide a search box within Firefox until 2011. Given that the deal generates more than three-quarters of Mozilla’s revenues, will the release of Chrome affect the relationship at all?

    No. Actually, John Lilly, the CEO of Mozilla, put up a blog post about it. We work very closely with the Mozilla Foundation and a lot of our engineers contribute code actively to the Firefox project. Our vision is that there are good things in both Chrome and Firefox and having more choice for consumers is better and it stimulates more innovation. If we’re competing against other people who are coming up with brilliant ideas, that drives our teams to come up with better ideas as well.

    In the long-run, does Google have its eye on Internet Explorer’s market share?

    I think what would thrill us most is if every browser, Explorer included, got better because of Chrome. There’s no monetisation strategy for Chrome, it’s just about making the web better because, in the long run, that’s better for Google. A stronger web browser makes it easier for people to spend more time online. And if people spend more time online, some of them will do more Google searches. And some of those people will click on more ads and that’s good for us. Chrome doesn’t need a huge market share but we want it to be influential in making the web a better place.

    Does Chrome reflect a shift towards a web desktop, where applications and documents are all stored online?

    The bigger question about moving to the web desktop and the future of operating systems involves a bit too much crystal ball gazing. At the end of the day, a computer needs an operating system just to process enough information to get to the web. Operating systems do a lot more things as well that the web isn’t actually equipped to do. They’re complementary, certainly today and for the foreseeable future. If somebody gave you a computer with no operating system, you’d say, “This is completely useless.” You need the first step to even get to the second.

    To what extent do you see Chrome as a year zero for browsers?

    I think year zero for browsers was when Mosaic was released in 1993. We’re still building on a lot of things that have been done in the past. If you look back 10 years, the web pages that you’re using today are very different. And it’s not just because your connection speed is faster. Things like Ajax, which was first implemented in Internet Explorer in 1999 but not really used until 2003 or 2004, and is only gaining wide use now, that’s a big change. Not from a consumer perspective – because, as far as they’re concerned, it’s basically, “Can I use these things that I find on the web?” – but from the perspective of the creativity that web developers can use in building things for the web.

    What does Chrome do with users’ data? Should people be concerned about privacy?

    It sends the same things that every browser sends to the web and the information you send doesn’t go through Google. Being an open source project, you can actually go to the underlying code and you can see that, in this way, it’s exactly the same as other browsers. You search through the Omnibox but, when you install Chrome, we use the default search engine on your default browser. So, if you’ve been using Windows Live as your search provider on Internet Explorer and you download Chrome, then your search provider in Google Chrome will be Windows Live. And then no information at all goes to Google.

    A lot has been made of the Incognito function, which was quickly dubbed the ‘porn mode’? Is that unfair?

    There are lots of ways that Incognito mode can be useful. I use it whenever I look at my bank account details because that means that there’s no record of that happening on my computer. It’s no different than what you could do in any browser before, which is go through your session and then delete the history and cookies. It’s just a way to make it easier for people who don’t want to go through a whole bunch of menus to keep their information private, whatever it is. Clearly, most people jump to that conclusion [that it's designed for viewing adult sites covertly] but I don’t think that was primarily what we were thinking. There are more serious issues with keeping your browsing history private.

    Do you anticipate Chrome incorporating Firefox-style add-ons at some point?

    We’re passionate Firefox supporters and most Firefox supporters are passionate about their add-ons, so it’s fair to say that we’re looking into it quite seriously. We’re not confirming anything, we never pre-announce. But it’s safe to say that we too are interested in add-ons.

    When can we expect Chrome to be available for Mac and Linux?

    Mac and Linux are the next big goals and we’re working on them but we don’t have any announcement to make yet.

    Apart from search, Google now offers a web browser, email, instant messaging, word processing and more. What’s next?

    Mobile phones. We’re very excited about Android. We announced the software last year and we think that mobile is huge. There are three billion mobile phones in the world today and there are only one billion internet connections. So it’s a significantly larger portion of the population and we’re trying to find as many ways as we can to bring them information. It all comes back to democratising access to information, which is the prime motivator in everything we do.

    Get Registry Cleaner Download for Better Computing

    A registry cleaner download can ensure faster, safer and hassle free computing. Regular registry clean up is a must if you want your PC to give you optimum performance. Registry file is maintained by Windows operating system to store all the information about the hardware and software configurations and settings of the computer. Each time you make any changes to the system, a log is generated in the registry. This process of storing the system data is effective as the data is easily accessible by the system while running the computer.

    But the negative side of the Windows registry is that it can not delete the outdated entries itself. As you keep using your computer and make changes to the system settings, the registry file gets bulkier. Every time you install or uninstall a program, make changes to the system settings and add or remove new hardware components an entry is generated in the registry. As new entries keep on adding to registry file and old with outdated entries remaining in the registry, it gets cluttered with unimportant entries, making the system slow and unsteady. To get rid of these problems you can take a registry cleaner download and install the software to keep your PC registry up to date. With so many free registry cleaner download options available on the internet, you are free to choose any of them to ensure better performance of your PC.

    Once you get the registry cleaner download, you can install the software to scan the registry regularly for outdated entries. The registry cleaner software will automatically delete the outdated entries to keep the registry in perfect condition. This process is very effective to clean the registry without much effort. Moreover, the registry cleaner tool keeps a back up of the registry before it makes any modifications to the file. So, if your system poses any difficulty after you have done registry clean up, just restore the back up and your system will run as usual. Isn’t it great?

    So, if you are running a Windows operating system in your PC, it is very much important that you take a registry cleaner download. It will make sure that your computer registry is well maintained to give you faster and better computing experience. With the widely available registry cleaner tools over the internet it takes least effort to keep your PC registry in perfect condition.

    4 New Features That Makes Google Docs Even Better

    google docs featuresGoogle Docs has been by far one of the more useful offerings from Google in my life.  Sure, Gmail is a close second because I do use it every day.  However, since there are other worthy alternatives to using Gmail for my email, Google Docs will have to be my pick.

    One of the major reasons why Google Docs is useful to me is because of the amazing collaborative features it has.  Being able to work together on spreadsheets and documents has been imperative in the past few years.

    That being said, web-based word processing has had its downfalls (check out the debate).  One of the downfalls is Google’s ability to render documents correctly.  Let this article serve to prove that Google is working on the issues and hopefully someday online word processing can possibly replace the old school offline way of doing things.  In its newest release, Google Docs has worked on four areas that makes it even better than before.

    Real Time Collaboration

    Like I mentioned earlier, one of the Google Docs features I love is that I have the ability to collaborate with other editors.  Now Google has improved this to the point of real time collaboration.  This means that I can be working on a document or spreadsheet at the same time as another editor and we can actually see changes as they take place.

    Notice in the screenshot how there is a block highlighted in a color and how a name pops up.This tells me that a change is taking place at that exact moment.

    google docs review

    Chat With Other Collaborators

    This Google Docs feature goes right along with real time collaboration.  When Google acquired EtherPad (read more about it), perhaps they put them to work on Google Docs instead of Google Wave.  Either way, I see this as a great improvement to Google Docs; a move that makes a lot of sense.

    Now when you have another editor working on the same document, the name shows up at the top right side of the screen.  Clicking on the name will drop down an EtherPad-type chat sidebar.  Looks familiar, right?  Very cool though.

    google docs features

    Higher-Quality Imports

    In the past, importing documents created by offline word processors to be edited via Google Docs usually turned up some wonky formatting issues.  If it is true that they are improving the import abilities, I am all for it.  This is one area I see as holding me back from going all out using just web based word processing.  Google, never stop improving in this area.  We want to see the exact document that we uploaded, please.

    Ruler

    Last but not least, Google Docs has added a ruler at the top of the documents editor.  Word processors for years have had this feature.  Why it’s only now becoming available in Google Docs, I’m not sure.  However, having it finally here is a blessing.

    As you can see, we can now more easily format our documents.  A quick glance at the ruler, and perhaps a few quick adjustments, and we are on our way to a more better formatted word processing life.

    google docs features

    Even with these new Google Docs features, online word processing has much to be desired.  What else do you think Google Docs should add?  And what is your favorite (new or not) feature of Google Docs?

    Remove temporary files from your PC:
    Windows system automatically store temporary files at some location on your PC. These temporary files can eat a lot of system memory so you can free up your system memory by removing the temporary files. For instance, Windows XP offers a “Disk Cleanup” utility for removing all the unwanted temporary files stored on your PC.

    Identify and repair disk errors: You can check for the integrity of the files stored on your computer hard disk by running the Error checking software utility present in Windows operating system.

    Rearrange data stored on your hard disk: Several times the data stored on the hard disk is in fragmented form thereby consuming a large system memory. So, for improving the performance of your computer you should defragment all the data stored on the hard disk. Windows include a built-in software utility known as “Disk Defragmenter”, which is capable of defragmenting the hard disk. Follow this step every month for a better system performance.

    Protect your PC against viruses:
    It is strongly recommended to install some good antivirus software having the automatic update feature to provide real time protection for your PC against viruses, worms and other types of malicious codes.
