Overwhelmed By Selection? How To Find The Perfect Laptop, Tablet Or Camera

electronics buying guideA while ago, I wrote about a web app that helps you make some sense of the vast selection of smartphones currently available on the market. While Geekaphone was great, it was limited to smartphones only, and we all know that’s not the only thing that comes with a huge selection.

Recently, I had to purchase a laptop for a family member, who couldn’t even begin to find her way amongst all the possible options. Even for me, the selection was overwhelming. Where do you start? So imagine my joy when I found out that the makers of Geekaphone now offer a similar service for other items, such as tablets, cameras, TVs and even laptops. With Sortable, you can sort through different products according to the things you find most important, and find out what the best product is for your specific needs. You can also easily compare different items, and learn about similar items for you to consider.

Getting Started With Sortable

The first thing you have to do with Sortable, is decide what you want to buy. And this is probably the hardest decision you’re going to have to make in the whole process. On the main screen, you can also choose your maximum price, but you can always change that as you go along. Now all you have to do is click “Go”.

electronics buying guide

If you’re truly dumbfounded and have no idea what you’re looking for, Sortable offers a list of popular devices in each category. You can start by browsing these devices, and looking at the most popular comparisons other people have made. This should get you up to speed with the hottest trends on the market.

Finding The Right Device For You

Before you even start digging in, Sortable will recommend the best devices based only on your price range. The best device will appear on the left side of the screen, and more options will appear on the right.

buying electronics

As you go along, you’ll think of things that matter to you more than others, or things the device you choose must have. You can easily screen the results by almost any imaginable parameter. This includes everything from brand, network and form factor…

…to card format, display and ports. These change, of course, when searching for different products. Simply go over these criteria, choose your preferences and watch what happens to the results below.

sortable-5

When you find a device you’re interested in, you can get a comprehensive overview of the device’s specs, including photos, advantages, tradeoffs and reviews from Amazon.

image

You can also see how the device matches up to its competitors in various categories, and get an idea of what other similar devices are on the market, and what makes them better or worse than this device.

Comparing Items

If you’ve found two items you like, and would like to know which one is better for you, Sortable offers a comprehensive comparison between any two items, which includes any differences and similarities, a full specs comparison, and even a visual comparison.

To compare two items, either check the compare box when browsing items, or click the “compare” link at the top left.

buying electronics online

Here, you can fill in any two devices. You don’t have to remember the full name, simply start typing the brand name, and Sortable will offer different models for you to choose from.

sortable-8

You will then get a short overview of reasons to consider each device. You can already see significant differences here which can help you choose.

buying electronics online

If this is not enough, you can bore down into the more detailed differences, including a full specs comparison of every little aspect of the devices.

sortable-9

Editing Information

As you can see, there’s a huge amount of information in those specs. Naturally, some information is missing, and some information may be inaccurate. But there’s something you can do about it! When you’re viewing a item’s specs, and you find a missing piece of information or something you believe to be wrong, simply click the edit icon on the right and add or change that spec.

sortable-11

You don’t even have to create an account to do this, but if you do, you can keep track of your edits and become a known contributor on the site. If you choose to claim your account (personalize it, as opposed to keeping it anonymous), you can sign in with either Facebook, Google or Yahoo.

sortable-12

On the front page, Sortable features all the top contributors for each category (even if they are anonymous), and you can view a detailed list of their edits.

sortable-13[4]

More Products

Wish you could use Sortable to find more products? Well, it seems that they’re definitely planning on it. If you want to influence what those next products will be, click the Sortable icon on any page, and choose “Vote on what’s next!

sortable-14

This will direct you to Sortable’s Facebook page, where you can vote on what new products you’d like to see on Sortable. Looks like cars are leading the pack!

electronics buying guide

Bottom Line

The only thing that’s apparently missing from Sortable is a price comparison feature between different stores. The site seems to be tightly integrated with Amazon, and all buy links direct to there. But price comparison engines are a dime a dozen, and once you manage to decide what you want to buy, finding the right price should be a piece of cake. In fact, ignoring the price makes the site much more usable internationally, since prices and stores vary depending on where you are. Specs usually don’t.

What do you think of Sortable? Know of other good comparison engines we should try? Share in the comments.

Will Camera Phones Replace Compact Digital Cameras? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image81.png" alt="image" />Last week we asked if you were going to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/iphone-4s-makeuseof-poll/">rush out and buy the iPhone 4S or not. It seems nearly half of the readers are happy with their current phone, but everyone else wants an iPhone 4S at some point.

Out of 587 votes, here’s the breakdown: 47% of voters are sticking with their current phone; 32% voters are rushing out to buy the iPhone 4S as soon as possible; while 21% voters want the iPhone 4S somewhat, but aren’t in any hurry to go out and get it.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

Considering that the 47% voters sticking with their current phone includes non-iPhone users along with content users of older iPhone models, that’s a lot of people who want the iPhone 4S!

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iPhone-4S-Poll.png" alt="" />

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Will Camera Phones Replace Compact Digital Cameras?

Cameras in phones keep getting better and better. It’s pretty easy to find a phone with an 8 megapixel camera and a flash, and they’re not even that expensive. And while almost everyone will buy a cellphone, cameras are considered to be more of a luxury. So do camera phones mean the end for the compact digital camera? Do you still spend money on regular cameras, or are you content with those that come in your phone?

align="center">

What do you think are the pros and cons of each type of camera? Is the megapixel count really what’s important? If not, what do you consider to be the important things in a camera? Let us know!

5 Ways To Have Fun With Your Smartphone Camera [Android]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam01.png" alt="have fun with android" border="0" />Most Android phones and tablets come with a small camera, often two. Typically, the in-built webcam is used for video chatting or video calls. If these are the only tasks you use the camera of your Android device for, then you are wasting precious potential for a lot of fun.

Let me introduce you to five alternative uses for your Android device’s webcam, which involve fun and professional photo effects, time lapse photography, voice control, and motion detection. With the apps I suggest, you can monitor your candy stack, turn boring snapshots into pieces of art and take a group photo by shouting at your camera from across the room.

Motion Detection [Android 2.0+]

title="Camera Trigger" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.busywww.cameratrigger">Camera Trigger is designed to take a snapshot upon detecting motion in a defined area within the camera’s field of vision. It can make a single shot or take photos continuously as long as motion is detected within the designated hotspot. To indicate the event it will also play a sound.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam04.png" alt="have fun with android" border="0" />

When you launch the app you will be taken through a very well done tutorial that explains the setup and functions in cartoon style.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam03.png" alt="top fun android apps" border="0" />

A drawback of the app is that it only works for as long as the screen of your Android device doesn’t turn off.

Voice Control [Android 2.2+]

title="Say Cheese" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.saycheese&feature=search_result">Say Cheese is a pretty neat app all together, but voice control is definitely its coolest feature. You can trigger the camera with the words cheese or smile, you can zoom in, zoom out, zoom max, or zoom clear, and you can do a camera switch. It takes only minimal practice to get the keywords and the app will work fairly well off the bat.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam05.png" alt="top fun android apps" border="0" />

Stealth mode is another interesting feature, in which all sounds are turned off and the app is darkened to a barely visible toggle button. To take a picture in stealth mode, you simply press anywhere on the screen. A first vibration of the device will confirm that the camera is focusing and a second indicates that the picture was captured.

Photo Effects

HDR is the acronym for style="text-decoration: underline;">High style="text-decoration: underline;">Dynamic style="text-decoration: underline;">Range, a photo processing technique that allows for “a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image” [ title="Wikipedia: HDR Imaging" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging">Wikipedia].

HDR Camera [Android 2.2+]

title="HDR Camera" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.almalence.hdr&feature=search_result">HDR Camera is an app that automatically creates HDR images. You can control the outcome by adjusting the settings, for example by changing color vividness to saturated or black and white.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam06.png" alt="top fun android apps" border="0" />

FXCamera [Android 1.5+]

Another interesting app is title="FxCamera" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=ymst.android.fxcamera&feature=search_result">FxCamera, which provides a set of effects, including ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye, SymmetriCam, or Warhol. You can also get a plain and simple normal camera view.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam02.png" alt="android fun apps" border="0" />

Unfortunately, it is not tablet-fit as it only takes up a small portion of the screen.

Time Lapse

Action Snap [Android 2.1+]

title="Action Snap" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=oursky.gesturecam&feature=search_result">Action Snap is a camera app specialized on capturing action and movement. It can take multiple photos in intervals of 0.1 to five seconds or more (custom setting). When the time has elapsed and all picture were taken, the tool combines them all into one neat image.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AndroidWebcam07.png" alt="have fun with android" border="0" />

You can share images created with Action Snap on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr using Steply.

Canopy Camera Tools – Create Time-Lapse Movies & Take Better Pictures On The Go [iOS]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro2.jpg" alt="time lapse movies" />Quality, free and above all useful camera apps are often hard to come by on the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios">iOS platform. Both class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/share-life-photos-free-instagram-app-iphone/">Instagram and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/snapbucket-fun-mobile-photo-styling-sharing-app-photobucket-ios-android-smartphones/">Snapbucket are great for quickly sharing stylised snaps, but they don’t add any genuinely useful features for everyday shots or video.

class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/canopy-camera-tools/id417407454?mt=8">Canopy Camera Tools is an app designed to help you get the most out of your mobile photography, and much like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/frame-frame-free-photography-app-ios-stopmotion-antishake/">Joby’s Frame X Frame it has been created with a specific attachment in mind – the Kapok Canopy Case, with tripod mount. You don’t need a tripod to benefit from this one, as there are plenty of features you can use in your hand. You could always fashion something to hold your device steady (I find Blu-Tack works well without leaving a mess) if you fancy creating a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/chronolapse-desktop-client-create-timelapse-screencasts-ease/">time-lapse sequence.

Getting The Basics Right

The iPhone (or any iOS device) camera isn’t the be-all and end-all of mobile photography. Whilst the iPhone is the most popular and oft-used “camera phone” solution; Apple’s in-built app leaves you wanting a bit more control and a few extra features.

Without being overly complicated, Canopy places 6 main buttons on your viewfinder, which can be toggled on and off with a tap. These are persistent in both Camera and Video modes, which are selected at the bottom of the screen, along with quick access to existing photos and app settings.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/1.jpg" alt="time lapse movies" width="580" height="387" />

The left hand side of the screen allows you to choose between front and rear facing cameras, toggle time-lapse mode and the camera timer which is perfect for group shots and also works with video. On the right hand side of the screen there are buttons for controlling flash behaviour, toggling exposure lock and white balance lock.

The lock buttons are especially useful, and add some genuinely useful functionality to your phone. For example, whilst taking a video by default the camera will adjust exposure as light changes. Should you want to maintain exposure throughout the video, exposure lock allows you to do this and your camera won’t re-balance every time you move.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/settingslocked.jpg" alt="iphone camera apps" width="580" height="387" />

This also goes for white balance, and if you’re really serious you could use a piece of white or grey card to take a perfect white balance reading and lock this for the duration of your video or photo session.

Advanced Features, Better Results

Of course Canopy also includes the aforementioned time-lapse mode, which automatically stitches your photos into a video. It works, though as the handy notification I received pointed out – phone calls will interrupt any sequences you’re working on. The best way around this is to activate Airplane Mode from your device’s Settings.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/timelapse.jpg" alt="iphone camera apps" width="580" height="387" />

Time-lapse photography takes up a decent wedge of battery (I’ve yet to use an app which is “light” on power for this task) so make sure you’ve got enough battery to complete the sequence and find your way home afterwards. It works well, and doesn’t fill your camera roll with hundreds of images – great news.

The Settings menu afoot the viewfinder is also full of goodies. Much like Frame X Frame there is a spirit level (for that perfectly straight horizon) which – unlike Frame X Frame – does work in landscape mode. There’s also a grid that can be activated for aiding composition.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/settings.jpg" alt="iphone camera apps" width="580" height="387" />

Saving the best till last, it is also possible to use touch gestures to control the camera and this can be customized in the Settings area. As you can see from the screenshot below, the default configuration is pretty intuitive.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tap_gestures.jpg" alt="time lapse movies" width="580" height="387" />

Conclusion

Canopy Camera Tools is probably the best free camera app I have used on the iOS platform. Features like time-lapse, exposure and white balance lock along with well-implemented touch gestures make it a joy to use, and provide some excellent results. You really don’t need a tripod, Kapok case or Gorillamobile to enjoy Canopy. Grab it now and start taking better pictures!

    10 Powerful & Useful iPhone Camera Apps To Help You Take Better Pictures

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/iphonecamera.png" border="0" alt="iphone camera apps" />Right behind the Nikon D90, Apple’s iPhone 4 is the most popular camera in terms of pictures taken and uploaded to the photo sharing site, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/flickr">Flickr. While this little camera in your pocket has its limitations, there are hundreds of apps that provide it with some truly professional features and enhancements.

    There are hundreds of paid apps built for the iPhone camera, but there are also some really useful free options. I selected free apps that are both good demos of their counterpart full versions and/or just useful apps for the serious iPhone photo hobbyist. If you know of other good free options, please let us know about them.

    Cropping Apps

    The iPhone camera doesn’t have a post-shot crop tool, and if you’re serious about iPhone photography, you should have an app that enables you to crop photos. Many paid advanced photo editor apps include a cropping feature, but I found two iPhone camera apps that are devoted to just cropping and resizing images.

    The aptly named app, class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crop/id405666696?mt=8">Crop [iTunes Store link], enables you to crop and rotate your images without losing quality to your cropped images. It’s simple to use, and you don’t have to tap several buttons to get what you need.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot492.jpg" border="0" alt="iphone camera apps" width="580" height="419" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-rotate-crop/id438891150?mt=8">Rotate and Crop [iTunes Store link] includes the same features Crop, but it also allows you to make some exposure image adjustments, as well as share and export your edited images to Evernote, Dropbox, and a few other applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot493.jpg" border="0" alt="best iphone camera apps" width="580" height="382" />

    Photo Album

    The iPhone includes a photo library application for storing photos you import from your computer via iTunes, as well as the Camera Roll of images you snap with iPhone itself. But you should have one or more photo album apps that allow you to create folders of images that you import from your existing camera roll, your photo library, or images you download from the Internet on your iPhone.

    Photo Mashups

    If you want to do something fun and creative with your iPhone photos, there are a couple of free options. class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/realcoverlite/id411889666?mt=8">RealCoverLite [iTunes Store Link] allows you to place a photo inside a magazine cover without having to mess around with layering and masking. The Lite version offers only 6 covers (the full version includes 90), but it’s great for seeing what this app can do.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot496.jpg" border="0" alt="best camera apps iphone" width="580" height="438" />

    Your cover images can be emailed and shared with others. You can also include additional text on template covers.

    Creating photo collages is another cool way to show off photos. class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photomashup/id398870403?mt=8">PhotoMashup [iTunes Store Link] allows you to copy and paste several photos from your iPhone photo library, and save or email them as a collection in one file. From there you can layer photos on top of one another. They can be moved around and rotated.

    Timer Apps

    It’s also good to try out one or more time shutter apps on your iPhone. These iPhone camera apps are useful for shooting self-portraits, group and close-up shots. class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-timer/id304581144?mt=8">Photo Timer is one of the best options, and it’s free for a limited time. It not only enables you to set a timer for the shutter release, but it also includes a photo composition guide, burst mode, and photo sharing to Facebook, Twitter, MobileMe, Tumblr, and email.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot498.jpg" border="0" alt="best camera apps iphone" width="580" height="426" />

    If and when Photo Timer is no longer free, class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/auto-shutter/id380995955?mt=8">Auto Shutter is another option, which does exactly what it’s named for.

We have published reviews about few good free options, including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/photoshop-express/">Adobe’s Photo Express and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-sites-enhance-instagram-experience/">Instagram, but here are a few more.

The paid version includes 100 more effects, but this free version is a good demo of what the app can do. You only have to tap once to apply an effect and see the applied effect.

    10 Powerful & Useful iPhone Camera Apps To Help You Take Better Pictures

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/iphonecamera.png" border="0" alt="" />Right behind the Nikon D90, Apple’s iPhone 4 is the most popular camera in terms of pictures taken and uploaded to the photo sharing site, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/flickr">Flickr.

Many paid advanced photo editor apps include a cropping feature, but I found two apps that are devoted to just cropping and resizing images.

    The aptly named app, class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crop/id405666696?mt=8">Crop [iTunes Store link], enables you to crop and rotate your images without losing quality to your cropped images. It’s simple to use, and you don’t have to tap several buttons to get what you need.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot492.jpg" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot492" width="580" height="419" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photo-rotate-crop/id438891150?mt=8">Rotate and Crop [iTunes Store link] includes the same features Crop, but it also allows you to make some exposure image adjustments, as well as share and export your edited images to Evernote, Dropbox, and a few other applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot493.jpg" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot493" width="580" height="382" />

    Photo Album

    The iPhone includes a photo library application for storing photos you import from your computer via iTunes, as well as the Camera Roll of images you snap with iPhone itself. But you should have one or more photo album apps that allow you to create folders of images that you import from your existing camera roll, your photo library, or images you download from the Internet on your iPhone.

    class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ipic-manager/id427523435?mt=8">iPic Manager [iTunes Store Link] is a good free option. You can quickly add multiple photos from your existing iPhone library as well take a photo and have them instantly added to your selected folder. You can also password protect your images.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot494.jpg" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot494" width="580" height="406" />

    You might also want to have a photo album app that is completely devoted to safeguarding selected photos on your iPhone. class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/private-photo-vault/id417571834?mt=8">Private Photo Vault [iTunes Store Link] is another such option. This app also allows you to password protect individual albums, run a slide show, take photos from within the app, and much more.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/muoscreenshot495.jpg" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot495" width="580" height="423" />

Your cover images can be emailed and shared with others. You can also include additional text on template covers.

    6 Quick Fixes To Common Cell Phone Camera Problems

    common cell phone problemsBack in May, MakeUseOf published 10 Tips to Take Better Digital Pictures With Your Phone’s Camera.

    In this article, I will address some particular common cell phone problems that users run into when taking photos with a cell phone camera; and we all know, there are plenty.

    The problems addressed in these article will apply to most any cell phone camera, though I use the iPhone 3G camera for illustration.

    Blurry Images

    The easiest and probably most common cell phone problem with cell phone photos is they end up blurry. This occurs for a couple of reasons.

    • Cell phone cameras need to be properly held. You always want to hold the camera steady with both hands. The tricky part is clicking the shutter button after holding and composing a shot. So one thing to remember is that typically the shutter of the camera does not activate until the button is released. That means you can first push and hold down the button, frame your shot, and then release the button to release the shutter. Avoid trying to frame the shot while you push down the button.

      how to fix cell phone camera

      Also try to rest part of your phone on one of your fingers or in the palm of your hand to get a firm grip.

    • You might also try bracing your camera against a wall or on a table to help you steady a shot. Even setting up a tripod for your cell phone camera is a useful idea for portrait and group shots.
    • The less ambient light you’re shooting in, the more likely you’re going to get blurry photos. Because you can’t increase the shutter speed or open the aperture wider on a cell phone camera, you need to shoot in the brightest area possible, or use a flash if your camera has one.
    • If the shot is not blurry but still not as sharp as it needs to be, you can try using an image editor to sharpen the images — but this is less than ideal.

    Shooting Moving Subjects

    Because cell phone cameras have slow shutter speeds, it’s nearly impossible to capture moving subjects. To address this problem, you might try using an iPhone camera application that delivers multiple shots (or what is called burst mode) after the shutter is pressed. Check out this article for a couple of great iPhone photography apps: The Best Free Alternatives To Top Commercial iPhone Photography Apps

    Furthermore, to shoot moving subjects like children you definitely want to shoot in the brightest possible light to compensate for the slower shutter speed. The photo below is an example of the type of moving subjects that are nearly impossible to freeze capture using a cell phone camera.

    common cell phone problems

    Photos Lack Contrast

    As with most digital photography, photos typically lack good contrast especially when shot in low light settings. The best solution for this is using an image editor and processing photos after they are taken.

    how to fix cell phone camera

    Image editors such as the free iPhone app, Photoshop Mobile, have automatic brightness/contrast tools that can make the colors in your photos pop.

    how to fix cell phone camera

    Subject Looks Too Small

    There’s an easy solution to this one. Shoot close. You need to zoom in with your feet, even if you camera has a digital zoom. Fill the frame with the subject of the image. This is something that you do no matter what you’re using. In an image editor, you can also crop your images to make the subjects closer; however, because cell phone cameras have lower resolution than many point-and-shoot cameras, cropping too much may result in increased pixilation, especially when photos are printed. So zoom with your feet, instead of the lens, to get the best close-up you can. Experiment with shooting from different angles to get a better shot.

    Images Are Dark

    The obvious problem with dark photos is that there was not enough light when you took the shot. If your camera does not have a flash and you’re shooting in a low light area without a flash, there’s really nothing you can do to address this problem except get more light on the subject. Indoor lights at night are typically not enough light for cell phone cameras. You will need a flash.

    common cell phone problems

    Backlight

    Also, watch for what is called backlighting. That is, when there’s more light in the back of the subject than there is facing the subject. So make sure the light is coming from behind you and is facing the subject.

    In my experience, camera apps like the free and pro version of Camera Plus for the iPhone address some the problems described above. While cell phone cameras may never be a good replacement for point-and-shoot cameras, the portability of mobile cameras make learning how to use them more effectively worth the effort.

    Let us know how you fix particular common cell phone camera problems. Have you found an application or two that is helpful for your camera photography?

You don’t need to download anything other than what comes with your version of GMOD to get these effects. However, I do recommend downloading the NPC Camera add-on at this link garrysmod.org to use an NPC point of view to film your machinima movies (includes slight head-bobbling). There are many other different styles of filming you can utilize out there but the ones addressed here in this video are geared toward single player directors.
