<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/RightAlign.png">How many times has someone sent you a link to a website infested with incredibly hard-to-read fonts? It’s happened to all of us, and there’s not much we can do about it – or is there?

There are a few folks on the Internet who have experienced the same problem as you, and fortunately, they decided to do something about it. So graciously accept Grandma’s chain email link with no questions asked, and try out these web tools that all have one sole purpose – to allow you to see text on the web how you want to see it.

FontFonter [Web App]

It should be made clear that FontFonter isn’t going to transform the world’s worst website into something pristine and beautiful. Let’s face it. Bad web design is bad web design, and there’s nothing you can do to change it. However, it will make websites easier to read. Just punch your desired URL into FontFonter’s address bar, click the “FontFont It!” button, and embrace the glorious TypeKit font-changing magic.

With FontFonter, we can change any website’s fonts using three classifications: serif, sans-serif, and all. Basically, that means you could fix the website up with a whole new font scheme, or you could make everything uniform by deciding all the fonts should be the same. The tool is fairly easy to use in that you can replace all of a website’s sans serif fonts with your choice, and vice versa for serif. As mentioned, you can replace both of the website’s sans-serif and serif fonts with the same typeface.

The downside to FontFonter is the fact that it doesn’t provide previews of what fonts look like, so if you don’t have a mental list of TypeKit fonts, you are going to end up playing the lottery for a little while trying to find something suitable. Granted, this is a small price to pay, for as you use FontFonter over time, you will become familiar with your top choice selections.

Google Font Previewer [Chrome Extension]

The Google Font Previewer was created with web developers in mind, but it is also quite useful for the standard Internet consumer. The Chrome extension is designed for web designers who want to see how fonts from the Google Font API directory appear on webpages when in use, but it can also be a nice aid for those desiring a better font for easier readability.

After downloading the Font Previewer extension, you’ll be able to find it just to the right of Chrome’s address bar. Simply click it while on the website of your choice, and it will provide you with a multitude of options to mix things up. Select the fonts using the provided list, and customize with options such as increasing the text weight, changing the entire text to caps, or bumping up the percentage of text size in increments of 50.

In the case that you are actually designing a website, you could tackle the job using the Font Previewer’s CSS selection feature. Instead of testing your entire site while only looking at one selected font, you could actually enter specific tags that will change only parts of your work. This method is better than going back into the code every time you want to tweak something just to see how it would look.

Readable [Firefox Add-on]

Back in MakeUseOf’s past article, 4 Tools to Make Web Pages Easier to Read for People with Poor Eyesight, we were introduced to the Firefox Readable add-on (as well as its almost-identical relative, Reader). The add-on does not necessarily change the text styling of the actual website per se, but it does make the text found on it, well… readable.

If you want to read a particular article but struggle with the font that it is written in, simply click the Readable button for a nice change of scenery. Upon its activation, the add-on will open the content of the website in a theater-style presentation that features the page’s text and images in a very primitive, yet user-friendly, sans-serif form. Furthermore, highlighting a portion of the text only converts the selection, reducing clutter that you would normally have to scroll through.

Granted, even really nice things have their flaws, and in a cruel move, the activation button itself is the Achilles heel of Reader. The browser button is ironically incredibly tiny and almost blends in with the browser itself, presenting a very difficult-to-see design feature for those that the add-on is designed to help. However, this one problem does not sink the Readable boat, for as a whole, it is an excellent tool that can be used for the reading-impaired.

Conclusion

These three web-tools primarily focus on the text content of a website rather than the website as a whole, but as someone who once suffered serious migraines due to a great deal of in-browser reading, they are certainly a blessing. However, if you would like to find even more resources for easier in-browser reading, you should take a look at MakeUseOf’s 7 Firefox Add-ons That Improve Webpage Readability Level.

What are some of your least favorite fonts used in web design? How have these tools helped you? What other tools would you recommend?

<firstimage="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro1.png">switching to Linux because there are many good reasons to. The desktop customization options are endless, and so it’s not hard to modify bits of your computer, whether you’re in LTS Lucid (check this post to understand why there are so many different versions of Linux) or Karmic, for which there is a comprehensive and free PDF manual.

Today, we’ll go over a small tip involving how to modify the computer name, which you were able to set when you installed Ubuntu.

You might want to change the computer name for a number of reasons: Perhaps you want to shorten the name, or maybe there was a typo in the old computer name. Whatever it is, be sure to see the following instructions, which were tested in Ubuntu 10.10, a fun OS which we have explored here, although these will probably work for 10.04 too. For earlier editions or versions of Ubuntu, check these instructions that don’t require the use of the command line.

First, press Alt-F2 to bring up the Run dialog. Type the following:

gksu gedit /etc/hostname

and hit Run.

Type your administrator password when you’re prompted, and click OK. You’ll see a gedit text editor window open, displaying your current computer name. Replace the text with your desired name. Remember to hit Ctrl+S to save your file before closing the file.

Now bring up the Run dialog again by pressing Alt-F2. This time, type:

gksu gedit /etc/hosts

If you get a prompt to type your administrator password, do so to proceed, but it’s possible you might not even get that prompt before the hosts file loads up in gedit. Now locate the last line of the first block of text and replace the text with the name you chose earlier. Hit Save when you’re done correcting.

Close the file and restart the system. Once you’re back on your desktop, open a terminal window and verify that you have your new computer name at the header.

You should be all set if you use Ubuntu’s default web browser, Firefox. If however you use Google Chrome or Chromium, you may receive an error message that prevents the browser from opening after the system restart. I renamed the computer at least twice for this article and only got the error message after the first system renaming test.

If you did get the error message, read on.

To get Google Chrome or Chromium up and running again, bring up the handy Run dialog again and type what’s next:

/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.config/google-chrome

OR

/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.config/chromium/

Find and delete the SingletonLock file.

Open up Google Chrome or Chromium as either one should now run like normal in your freshly-renamed computer.

Additional commenters from all over the web recommend doing “sudo hostname [NEW COMPUTER NAME]” on the terminal, which seems to only tease with a temporary change as the new name is nowhere to be seen after a reboot. I’ve also seen suggestions to restart the hostname service, but that hasn’t worked for me.

Do you know of other ways, perhaps more convenient ones or ones that don’t require a system restart, to change your computer’s name in Ubuntu? Share your nuggets of wisdom in the comments!

How to fix Windows Startup Error/Windows Error Recovery? And when none of the options on boot manager work, how can you fix your PC? What if you don’t have the windows installation disc, or don’t know where it is?

Learn how to fix this error, even if you do not have the windows installation disc.

Windows Boot Manager – Windows Error Recovery.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix this problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click “repair your computer”
4. Safe Mode
5. Safe Mode with networking
6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
7. Last known good configuration
8. Start Windows normally

Don’t worry if none of these options work.

If your computer came with Windows operating system installed when you purchased it, you have the OEM version (original equipment manufacturer version that will lack some features of a full version and are not eligible for upgrades) and will not have a installation disk. Many PC vendors are not even providing recovery discs these days. Instead the recovery files are stored in a hidden partition on the hard drive, which makes it even harder to fix any errors.

Not providing OS installation disk is convenient for PC vendors and manufacturers but not for us – the PC users. If you do have the installation disc and when you run the disk, you can reformat your hard drive and reinstall an image of your computer that is a replica of the way your system was on the day you bought it (factory settings). Any changes that you have made will be wiped out. All those programs you installed, all those Microsoft patches and updates, all of it will be gone. Use the product key found on the Windows sticker on your computer when it asks for the product key. It is always better to find the windows product key in advance (Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder can find your product key from Windows Registry) and keep it in a safe place, because you will need this info when you want to restore your PC back to factory settings.

There is also an option to repair your OS on installation disk. But if you’ve corrupted registry files, choosing repair OS does nothing and your only option is a full reinstall. And, you’ll have to re-download all the software, games etc., that was on it before, because you will lose all your data.

What if you don’t have installation disc or repair OS option fails? Why should you lose all your important data? But wait, there is a shortcut called Reimage and you can still keep up all your data, applications and games.

Reimage is a fully automated online PC repair tool that reinstalls the operating system without touching user data or applications. It uses a huge database or repository of over 25 million components of system files to compare to those which are missing or corrupt on your system. And on a brief analysis it will make the necessary corrections making your PC as good as a freshly installed one, only with all your files still there.

You might be thinking, how can you perform an online repair? if your computer can’t even start. Well that’s good question. You have to visit Reimage’s Site and Click on the Support Tab to visit ‘Build a Boot CD’ Page. Make a boot CD and do a Scan and Fix at http://www.reimagepcrepair.comand correct all your corrupted system files. You will then be amazed to see the dead PC live.

Reimage is the only technology in the world that can fix your PC even after it is already damaged. Reimage is not just a registry cleaner, anti-spyware, windows repair and an Anti-virus software… Reimage is a full-service, comprehensive “PC-Wash” that retrieves a “Just-Like-New” computer while keeping your personal data secure and protected. Reimage reinstalls the operating system without touching user data or applications.

My friend asked about how to change the passwords of users in Windows XP. I just researched and found out some ways to change the password of users in Windows XP. I’m explaining every way one by one. If you know any other interesting way, please let me know through comments.

Using Ctrl Alt Delete

This is the easiest one in my opinion. If your press Ctrl Alt Del when you are logged onto your Windows XP machine, it will show you the classic security options.

Select change password and change the password of the logged on user.

Note: If the security options does not appear. Task manager shows up instead of the security options. Just go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts –> Change the way Users Log on or off.

Uncheck Use the Welcome Screen. Log off and logon again. Now pressing Ctrl Alt Del will show the security options window.

Using Control Panel

To change your password using Control Panel, go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts

Tip: You can also open control panel by Start –> Run –> control. This will open Control Panel.

Select the user for which you want to change the password and select Change my password.

Please note that you may need appropriate privileges to change the password of another user.

Using Command Prompt

To change the password of a user from the command prompt, go to Run –> cmd.

Command prompt will open. Use the following commands to change the password:

net user username password /domain

Replace username with the original username and password with the new password you want to assign to that user. /domain is optional. If you are in a domain environment, specify the domain name otherwise, if you’re using a local user, leave /domain. If I want to change the password of user Sanix to 12345. I will issue the following command at command prompt:

net user Sanix 12345

It will change the password of the user Sanix to 12345. Please note that if you’re not logged on as an administrator, you will get the following error:

“System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied”

If you want to have full usage of the net user command, go to the following Microsoft Article.

Using Control userpasswords2

To use this classic user management, go to Start –> Run –> control userpasswords2

This will open the classic user accounts management window. Select any user and select reset password.

Using Computer Management Console

To use the computer management console to change the passwords of the users, right click My Computer –> Manage –> Local Users And Groups –> Users

Right click the username for which you want to change the password and select Reset Password.

If you have any other method of changing the password, please let me know through comments. Thanks.

Using password tool

Windows Password Key 8.0 is considered as the best tool to reset local administrator and user passwords on any Windows system. It creates a password recovery CD/DVD, USB Flash Drive for home, business and enterprise with an extremely competitive price. And most of all, it’s the most popular and safe solution for removing your Windows password until now. No need to call a technician, no need to re-install anything, and you certainly don’t need to reformat. It works on all and any Windows versions and computers any age.

Note: This information applies only to the password for logging in to the Windows XP operating system. If you have forgotten your password for logging in to a computer running the Windows XP operating system, there are a few different options: If you created a password reset disk for windows XP, you can use that disk to reset the password on your acount. For more information on how to create and use password reset disks go to the the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

If you want to know another utility way to reset the password of any user that has a valid local account on your XP system, by modifying the crypted password in the registrys SAM file. You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.

Windows password key 8.0.

http://www.lostwindowspassword.com

It works excellent, that is, easy to solved your problem just take you 5 minutes. It also creates a password recovery CD/DVD,USB Flash Drive for home, business and enterprise.

Download here:

http://www.lostwindowspassword.com/downloads/Windows_Password_Key_Demo.exe

Today I also want to talk “Administrator Account Not Used for Logon“

The administrator account and password created during setup are used to log on in safe mode only. To create a password for user accounts, double-click manage users in control panel.

Therefore, if you are propted for the user name and password (or if you are prompted only for the password) when you use the net use command(but not because you used an asterisk[*] in the net use command for password prompting) and the /savecred switch, the credentials are saved.

(1) When you type the net use * \\ computer_name \ share_name /savecred command, the user is prompted for a user name, and then the user is prompted for a password.

(2) When you type the net use * \\ computer_name \ share_name /u: domain_name \ user_name /savecred command, the user is prompted for a password.

(3) However, when you type one of the following commands, a key is not created:

net use * \\ computer_name \ share_name * /user: domain_name \ user_name /savecred

-or-

net use * \\ computer_name \ share_name * /savecred /user: domain_name \ user_name

If you type net help use at a command prompt, more information is displayed about the net use command.

Hope these can help you.
