How To Dual-Boot The Windows & Linux OS’s On Your Computer

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/dualboot-logo.png" alt="dual boot windows linux" />It’s like having two computers in one – start your system up and choose between Windows and Linux. It’s called dual-booting, and it gives you access to two of the best operating systems on the planet.

Why dual-boot? Maybe you want the security of Linux when you’re browsing the web, but want access to the vast library of games Windows can offer? Perhaps you want to explore Ubuntu and other Linux systems but want to leave Windows around in case you need it?

The easiest way to get dual-boot working is to use href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-safely-dual-boot-windows-and-linux-with-wubi-installer/">Wubi, the Ubuntu installer that runs from within Windows. There are downsides to Wubi however, including stability issues and occasional trouble upgrading. That’s why there is no replacement for setting up working partitions and installing Linux. Whatever your reason for dual-booting, rest assured – the process is easy if you know what you’re doing.

Install Windows First – Then Linux

Put simply, if you want to set up a dual-boot setup, you need to install systems in the proper order. Install Windows first, then install Linux.

Why? Basically, Windows does not recognize the existence of other operating systems. It is a bit of a psychopath, assuming that if you’re installing Windows, you only need Windows. As such, Windows does not provide any way for you to access your other operating systems installed alongside it.

Don’t worry, though. Almost all Linux distros recognize that Windows exists, and are willing to share the computer with Windows. This is why you should always set up Windows first, then set up Linux. This will give you a choice of operating systems when you start your computer.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/grub.jpg" alt="dual boot windows linux" width="580" height="322" />

There are href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot">ways to install Windows after Linux and still dual-boot, but they aren’t recommended for beginners. The simplest thing is to always install Windows before installing Linux.

If you’re installing Windows now, leave some space free on the hard drive. 10GB is probably enough depending on what you plan to do in Linux, but how much space you give each system will ultimately depend on what you plan on doing with them and which system you see as being your primary system. Give this some thought.

Dp you want to install Linux alongside an already-existing Windows installation? This is also possible, although a little more complicated. I’d highly recommend defragmenting your drive before you do anything else, however.

Back Up!

If you plan on dual-booting, you should really backup your data. It’s unlikely, but there’s always a chance when you’re messing around with your disk partitioning that something might go wrong. You can backup your data manually if you like, or you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-advanced-hard-drive-cloning-solution-from-clonezilla/">use Clonezilla to backup your entire operating system.

Do you need more information? Check out our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-stuff-happens-the-backup-restore-guide">free backup guide or our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-50-cool-uses-for-live-cds">live CD guide to find out more.

Install Linux

Once you’ve backed up your information you’re ready to install Linux. Doing this is easy, just download the ISO file for your Linux distro of choice, burn it to a CD and then boot from the CD.

If you want an easy-to-set-up distribution, I recommend Ubuntu. Its guided installation process will help you make room for itself:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/dualboot-question.png" alt="dual boot linux and windows" width="580" height="217" />

Pay careful attention to your options. You want to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, not replace Windows. Once you select this option you will be taken to the partition editor. If you left empty space, simply use this empty space to install Ubuntu. If you haven’t, you’ll need to shrink your Windows partition first. Do this by right-clicking your Windows partition, then lowering the space it takes up.

Do you want access to your Windows files from Ubuntu? You can. During installation, set up your Windows drive to be mounted every time you boot.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/dualboot-mount.png" alt="dual boot windows linux" width="580" height="187" />

Unfortunately it’s a lot harder to get Windows to see files from your Linux partition. There are some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/work-with-linux-partitions-from-windows/">tools for the job, but in my experience they rarely work well consistently.

Your New System

Congratulations! You’ve now got a dual-boot environment set up. It was pretty easy, wasn’t it?

Cold Calling Computer Technicians: Don’t Fall For A Scam Like This [Scam Alert!]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/intro1.jpg" alt="" />You’ve probably heard the term “don’t scam a scammer” but I’ve always been fond of “don’t scam a tech writer” myself. I’m not saying we’re infallible, but if your scam involves the Internet, a href="../service/windows">Windows PC and a cold calling technician, it won’t take long for the penny to drop.

I’m basing this article on my experience with a would-be scammer who called my parents house last week. This isn’t the first time Mr Windows Repair Guy has so helpfully graced us with his detailed instructions, and this time I was determined to find out exactly what the deal was.

Tell your friends, tell your relatives – Microsoft does not call to fix your PC.

The Call

When the phone rang, the guy on the other end claimed to be from “Windows Technical Support”. Many people would probably notice that something is awry at this point, as Microsoft isn’t known for cold calling to tell you there’s a problem with your computer. Straight away I knew it was the good old “you’ve got viruses, and we can fix ‘em” scam, so instead of the “where’s the Start button on my Linux desktop?” routine I had fun with last time, I thought I’d play along.

I was informed that Microsoft had detected that I had viruses on my computer, and that if I didn’t follow his advice to remove them, my computer could “crash unexpectedly at any time” (tell me something I don’t know).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/1management.png" alt="" width="572" height="329" />

So I sat down at my parents’ new Windows 7 machine and asked him what sort of viruses I had. He told me to click on Start, right-click on Computer and choose Manage. Then I was told to click Event Viewer, Custom Views then Administrative Events.

This is where the scam gets somewhat believable. This screen displays a log of messages from various services and programs running on your PC. At first glance, there are a lot of red crosses and warning triangles, which could probably look quite serious to an average user.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2administrativeevents.png" alt="" width="545" height="375" />

Apparently, these were my viruses!

The Fix

I was then asked if I could delete any of these new-found viruses with a simple right-click and Delete. As we all know by now – these aren’t viruses. Additionally, you can’t remove the log with the right-click context menu, so I guess they’re just here to stay?

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/3myvirus.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="263" />

Of course the fix was only round the corner. Once I’d informed my new best friend that I couldn’t remove them, he told me to open Internet Explorer (!) and assured me there was software available to help victims like me.

The website I was told to visit was AMMYY.com (which we are not linking to), but the software didn’t seem to match up. This website claims to provide a remote desktop solution, not the malware dressed up as security software I was expecting.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/4canuhasdelete.png" alt="" width="294" height="557" />

At this point I had been on the phone for a good 15 minutes, with much of the conversation lost in translation as I struggled to understand the heavy Indian accent. I had words, informed him that I knew exactly what was going on and would be reporting the incident to BT (the telephone provider) as well as shaming him in any way possible and bid him adieu.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ammyy.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="356" />

Didn’t stop him calling back immediately though did it?

The Cost

There are a plethora of reasons you shouldn’t trust a cold caller, but even more so when it comes to your PC, your personal information and suspicious software. The costs associated with someone gaining remote access to your computer could be devastating. Sensitive information relating to bank accounts, passwords for paid services and documents that could be used to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-ways-prevent-identity-theft-computer-hackers-2/">forge an identity could be stolen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/5ohnoeitsascam.png" alt="" width="561" height="458" />

Goods could be ordered via services that save your billing information and any sites that remember logins will be easily accessible. In addition to theft, safeguards like anti-virus programs might be disabled and further malicious software like keyloggers and trojans could be installed.

There is unfortunately very little that can be done to combat these scams. I phoned BT and was told that the numbers from this type of call are virtually untraceable, but calls came from “somewhere in Asia” and were a persistent problem. If the perpetrators are using href="../tags/voip">VoIP services like Skype, the calls are not easy to trace, and it’s not impossible to use a ringback service to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-online-tools-to-identify-the-owner-of-a-phone-number/">decipher the number.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article has provided some brief insight into this kind of scam, which is prevalent all over the world. Unless you fancy becoming part of the big bad botnet, you’d better never trust a caller like this. Variations are common – sometimes it’s bogus anti-virus software that requires payment, or similar – so remain vigilant.

I’m not sure whether AMMYY.com are a legitimate company or not, but Panda’s Firefox plugin doesn’t rate the website and nor does a quick Google search which brings up all sorts of “scam” notices. I’m going to recommend that nobody uses an AMMYY.com product, purely on the basis that there are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-easy-screen-sharing-and-remote-access-tools-all-free/">lots of quality proven alternatives that aren’t linked to dishonest individuals who want your money, data and bandwidth.

Have you had any phone calls like this? Do you know anyone who has? Consider sharing this article, and spreading the word. Comments and discussion are welcome below this article.

3 Tools To Remind Yourself To Take A Break & Relax While Working At The Computer

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks08b.png" border="0" alt="relax at work" />Working on the computer may not be very physical, nevertheless it’s tough on your body. Sitting all day can hurt your lower back and has a negative impact on your circulation. Extensive typing can stiffen the muscles in your upper back and neck, and finally staring at the screen for hours on end is very tiring and can cause serious problems, such as dry eyes. Moreover, office work has been associated with insomnia and anxiety. If you are damned to spend your working hours behind a desk, you had better find ways to do something good for your body.

The good news is that short breaks of class="vt-p" title="MakeUseOf Tag: Relax" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/relax/">relaxing and stretching can do wonders for your class="vt-p" title="MakeUseOf Tag: Health Tips" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/health-tips/">health and well being. And who doesn’t like to take breaks during work? In this article I will show you tools you can integrate into your workday to remind you that you need to take a break.

class="vt-p" title="Protect Your Vision" href="http://www.protectyourvision.org/">EVO

EVO is a website helper which runs your selection of a default or custom timer that will remind you of a 5 or 10 minute break. The setup is simplistic and not intrusive. During the screen, EVO can black out your screen and count down the time of your break.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks01.png" border="0" alt="take a break" />

EVO also provides instructions for eye gymnastics that you can go through during your break.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks02.png" border="0" alt="eye gymnastics" />

The creators of EVO have also launched a website that has information about the class="vt-p" title="Computer Vision Syndrome" href="http://computer-vision-syndrome.org/">Computer Vision Syndrome.

class="vt-p" title="Big Stretch Reminder" href="http://www.monkeymatt.com/bigstretch/">Big Stretch Reminder (Windows)

Big Stretch Reminder is a reminder app designed to remind you to do regular stretches during your work day. It comes with a variety of options, including custom settings. You can select the time between breaks from a list of predefined options or create a custom setting.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks07.png" border="0" alt="stretch reminder" />

For the reminder mode you can choose between a non-intrusive balloon mode or an intrusive popup mode. The third option, the micro-break mode, is of the intrusive popup type. The message that is shown along with your break reminder can be a random tip or customized.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks06.png" border="0" alt="take a break" />

class="vt-p" title="Breaker" href="http://davidevitelaru.com/software/breaker/">Breaker (Windows)

If you’re a workaholic who has no trouble getting lost in work and forgetting the time, then you should try Breaker. It’s a simple software that lets you set up breaks individually in a loop or pattern.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks03.png" border="0" alt="break reminder software" />

The app runs in the system tray and when you hover over it you can see the countdown to your next break. Once the time has run out, a quiet alarm and a little window in the bottom right of the screen reminds you that it’s time for a break or to get back to work.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Breaks04.png" border="0" alt="countdown" />

Since Breaker allows the creation of custom patterns, it is also a great tool to easily remind yourself of meetings or appointments scattered throughout the day.

    Test Your Computer For Security Misconfigurations With Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA06.png" alt="security misconfiguration" /> class="vt-p" href="http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/cc184923">Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) is a free tool, designed for IT professionals of small and medium-sized businesses. Given its clear graphical user interface however, it also serves as a great security tool for personal use. MBSA analyzes the class="vt-p" title="MakeUseOf Tag: Security" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/security/">security setup of local and networked Windows computers and can identify common security misconfigurations or missing updates.

    You can class="vt-p" title="Download MBSA 2.2" href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=02be8aee-a3b6-4d94-b1c9-4b1989e0900c">download MBSA 2.2 from the Microsoft Download Center. It is available for 64-bit (x64) and 32-bit (x86) Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2. Moreover, it comes in four different languages: German (DE), English (EN), French (FR), and Japanese (JA).

    Getting Started

    The startup interface of MBSA is very simple and basically offers only three options: scan a computer, scan multiple computers, or view existing security scan reports. The sidebar also offers links to the program documentation and the Microsoft security website.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA01.png" border="0" alt="security misconfiguration" />

    Note that you require Administrator rights for all machines that you wish to scan. You can scan a single or multiple systems based on the computer name or IP address. If you select to scan multiple computers, you need to enter a domain name or a range of IP addresses.

    For this demonstration I went with scanning a single computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA02.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    The scanning options are straightforward, although not necessarily clear for the inexperienced user. If you don’t understand what some of the options mean, click the > Scanning Options link at the bottom for detailed explanations. The information will load in a separate Internet Explorer window.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA03.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    The scan merely takes a few seconds and returns an overview of issues found in different categories. Each item is scored and a summary of the result is provided, along with links to further information material.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA04.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    Checks that were passed receive a green score, items that could not be checked are marked with a grey minus, room for improvements is highlighted by a blue score, a yellow score indicates a non-critical vulnerability and a red score alerts the user to a failed check and thus a critical security issue. Follow the respective links for detailed information about what was scanned or instructions on how an issue can be corrected.

    All reports are saved and can be accessed at a later time for reference. You can also print or copy your report to the clipboard.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA05.png" border="0" alt="security misconfiguration" />

    Conclusion

    Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer is a very good tool to quickly get an overview of security-related settings on your Windows machine. Instructions for correcting detected security misconfigurations are very clear and should therefore be easy to follow for the average user. Overall, the documentation is surprisingly detailed and well done, almost as if Microsoft expected non-IT folks to use this tool.

    It must be said though that fixing most configurations does require some basic understanding of how Windows works. For example an issue with the file system is not necessarily security relevant and the instructions do not provide information on how to find the drive that doesn’t run NTFS. Moreover, some issues require advanced knowledge and should be left to the experts to be fixed, for example setting a password expiration.

    For more information, also have a look at this article from Microsoft Patterns & Practices: class="vt-p" title="How To: Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer" href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff647642.aspx">How To Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston is a truly great channel with an immense collection of programming tutorials. The href="http://www.thenewboston.com/">official website contains a list of all the tutorials made so far, which are well into the thousands (about 1500 videos as of this writing). Not only does it have tutorials for various programming languages, but it also has videos on href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston#grid/user/C315B2A086BA6AAF">building computers, tutorials for software like Dreamweaver and After Effects, as well as 3D-modeling software. The website now also has plans to present tutorials for a variety of other topics, like Math and Biology. Since all these tutorials are free, thenewboston is probably the greatest source of video tutorials for people interested in beginning programming languages. Bucky, the instructor behind most of the videos, explains concepts like a peer, so his tutorials are definitely very easy to follow and catch up to.

    To jump into thenewboston’s tutorials for different computer programming languages, check out:

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro11.png" alt="learn computer programming"/>For a lot of students, summer vacation has arrived and it’s an ideal time to stretch out and relax, or alternatively, catch up in your favorite hobbies and perfect your skills. With the advent and growth of YouTube and plenty of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-12-sites-watch-videos-youtube/">other high-quality video-sharing websites and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/teaching-fun-efficient-proprofs-educational-toolset/">tools like flashcard software, learning new things visually by yourself has never been easier. Even though YouTube is used regularly to share href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/my-top-ten-favourite-funniest-youtube-videos/">comedic href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-funny-youtube-video-channels-worth-keeping/">clips, it’s without a doubt, a rich pool of educational videos . You’ve seen many articles on our site listing some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-amazing-youtube-channels-subscribe/">amazing YouTube channels to become more educated in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/educational-youtube-channels/">a variety of general topics, to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-youtube-dance-lessons-learn-cool-dance-moves/">learn cool dance moves, even some channels for non-native speakers to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-channels-learn-speak-english/">learn and perfect their English, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-youtube-channels-linux-enthusiasts-follow/">dedicated channels for Linux enthusiasts that learn about Linux news and issues.

    Since it never hurts to learn something new, especially a skill set like computer programming in different languages, we will go over some of the best channels that will introduce you to the world of programming. Let’s look at which channels made the cut.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston is a truly great channel with an immense collection of programming tutorials.

    So you can get a taste of thenewboston’s teaching style, here’s a video from this Java series where Bucky explains href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymorphism_(computer_science)">polymorphism:

    style="text-align: center;"> width="580" height="360"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0xw06loTm1k?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0xw06loTm1k?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    thenewboston also has a number of tutorials for different Adobe Products:

    There’s a an impressive number of additional topics that thenewboston has covered already. You can check out all his videos sorted by series at the official website’s Tutorials page href="http://www.thenewboston.com/?page_id=14">here.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet">Xoaxdotnet (For C++ Tutorials)

    Xoaxdotnet has a variety of tutorials (almost 200 videos) on literature, Algebra, and even neural networks and more general Computer Science concepts (such as href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet#grid/user/89B61F78B552C1AB">sorting and searching algorithms, as well as big O notation), but for the most part, this channel has focused on and produced lots of C++ tutorials:

    Here’s the first video of this series:

    style="text-align: center;"> width="580" height="465"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WYbeLBVG34I?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="465" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WYbeLBVG34I?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Those are probably the most distinctive ones, but be sure to check out the complete list of videos he has produced, sorted by topic href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet#g/p">here.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/phpacademy">phpacademy (For PHP Tutorials)

    Like the channel name suggests, phpacademy focuses on teaching PHP, and some MySQL. href="http://phpacademy.org/videos/index.php?all">With over 200 videos, phpacademy is one of the most subscribed guru channels of the United Kingdom so it’s definitely worth a look if you’re interested in creating more dynamic websites.

    Can You Actually Hire Computer Hackers Online? [Geeks Weigh In]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hirehackerthumb.jpg" alt="computer hackers" />Ask 5 different people about who the typical hacker is, and you’ll likely receive 5 different responses. Some see computer hackers as rebels against governments and corporate entities that have become corrupt, while others consider them to be nothing more than Cheeto encrusted losers sitting in their mother’s basement.

    The different legends about hackers can make them seem like a potential resource for those who feel the need to go beyond the law. Be it as simple as trying to crack an important encrypted file you’ve forgotten the password to, or as devious as keeping tabs on a person’s moves online, there are reasons why a hacker-for-hire might appeal. But can you actually lay out your own cash for this service, or will you just be scammed?

    A Dangerous Underworld?

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hirehacker1.jpg" alt="computer hackers" width="550" height="367" />

    You might expect that finding a hacker would require delving into a shadowy underworld filled with people using cheap pre-paid class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-3-secret-mobile-phone-tricks-fun-phone/">mobile phones and handles like xXx1337HackerxXx. Digging into this might be possible, but risky.

    You’d be wrong. Finding a computer hacker – for basic password cracking and similar services, at least – is not difficult. A simple Google search for “hackers for hire” will reveal the sites for a number of organizations like class="vt-p" href="http://www.hiretohack.net/">Hire 2 Hack and class="vt-p" href="http://www.hirehacker.net/">HireHacker. These organizations promise that they can crack databases, emails or websites.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hirehacker2.jpg" alt="benefits of computer hackers" width="550" height="197" />

    Of course, they want money in exchange. Hire 2 Hack, for example, has a $150 minimum charge for hacking an email account. More complex work, like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-to-learn-how-to-hack-like-a-pro/"> hacking a website, usually requires that you submit information about the website you’d like to hack in order to receive a quote. It’s not much different than hiring a contractor to fix your patio.

    Playing With Fire

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hirehackers3.jpg" alt="computer hackers" width="500" height="422" />

    At first glance, many of the hacking services online look at least somewhat legitimate. Although not the same as a legitimate company website, they usually offer multiple payment options and conform to a reasonable standard of website design and copy editing. Most of the red-flags that indicate a scam website, like annoying pop-ups, poor grammar and audio/video content that plays without permission, are not found on these sites.

    However, that doesn’t guarantee that these sites are safe. Since the service is illegal, you are not going to have much leverage if there is a customer service issue. In my research, I found that there are surprisingly few complaints online about people being simply ripped off by such services, but it’s always a risk.

    A bigger risk is the potential that your hacking request will be used as blackmail. There are several articles online describing a situation where a person hires a hacker to obtain a password or perform some other service, only to have the hacker turn around and threaten to tell the target who hired them. A post by someone named Matt Bennet on class="vt-p" href="http://www.ripoffreport.com">Ripoff Report accuses YourHackerz.net of class="vt-p" href="http://www.ripoffreport.com/internet-services/yourhackerz-yourhack/yourhackerz-scam-yourhackerz-c-768bz.htm">blackmailing him for $1,000.

    Of course, all of this information is obscured by the anonymity of the Internet. For example, the above report only accuses YourHackerz.net of blackmail, but the poster does not report that he actually paid the money or provide any substantial details about his experience. Is Matt Bennet real, or is he a competitor trying to discredit the service? What about the posters who reply to Matt Bennet’s article, claiming they had successful experiences? Are they real, or are they simply trying to drum up business with fake reviews?

    Conclusion

    Can you hire hackers online? Yes, you can. I’m sure you could hire them offline as well, if you know who to speak to or where to look.

    The more important question is – can you trust computer hackers you hire online? In my opinion, no, you can’t. This does not mean every hacker service, or even a majority of them, is a scam or is staffed by malicious hackers looking to blackmail customers. However, because the service is illegal, there’s no way to determine the reputation of the service, and there’s no accountability. This means there is no basis for trust.

    If you do choose to hire a hacker, it would be wise to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-ways-prevent-identity-theft-online-activities/">protect your identity. Do not use your real email address, do not provide personal information, and for the love of all that is holy, don’t pay with a credit or debit card!

    How To Diagnose Hardware Problems When Your Computer Won’t Turn On

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hardware-preview-image.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on"/>Last week I showed you some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-diy-computer-repairs-easily/">simplest DIY repairs and upgrades that you can do yourself, but one reader asked how to diagnose which component was the problem. Today I’d like to walk you through the process of diagnosing a faulty PC that won’t turn on, then next week I’ll show you some more in-depth tools to pinpoint problem hardware in a situation where the computer will turn on, but is acting strangely.

    Obviously, if the power won’t start on your PC then no amount of software tools is going to help you, so it’s time to open the case and start the hardware diagnosis process.

    Strip Non-Essentials:

    The first thing I do if the computer won’t turn on is to disconnect or even physically remove any non-essential system components. This includes:

    • PCI / ISA / PCI Express Cards – Anything apart from your video card (and your video card too if you have an onboard port you can use instead) should be removed, such as sound cards, networks cards, modems, additional interface cards. You may think these are unlikely to cause issues, but one of my old machines refused to boot last week because the network card had developed a fault. Removed it, and all was fine.
    • Hard disks – You need only remove the power to these.
    • CD-ROM – Again, only take out the power cable.

    Having that done, try the power again. Are you seeing any activity at all? Is there a power light on your motherboard?

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/computer-repair.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on" width="580" height="385" />

    If you get a slight burst of power but ultimately the system won’t boot, it’s possible that either your motherboard or power supply itself is faulty. It’s quite common in old PCs to find capacitors on the board itself that have literally exploded, flooding out liquid inside and causing this kind of behavior. Check around your motherboard quickly to see if you can find any traces of the dreaded “bulging capacitor” – the tops may have opened, you may see brown liquid on the  board, or it may just be bulging slightly:

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/bulging-capacitor.jpg" alt="why wont my computer turn on" width="580" height="435" />

    If you can’t see any obvious capacitor problems, then move on to diagnosing the power supply.

    Diagnosing a Faulty Power Supply:

    A power supply is the most common component to fail along with hard drives and fans, usually down to either the moving fan inside the power supply itself or again, capacitors. However, you should under no circumstances ever try to repair a faulty power supply – the only option is to replace it. Even if it appears to be broken, there’s a very high chance that some high voltages are still stored inside. I DON’T suggest you pull out a multimeter and start trying to test various bits of it.

    There are two way to diagnose a faulty power supply, one is with a spare, and the other is with a second computer. If you have a spare, trying swapping the faulty one out and the spare in. If you have a spare computer, grab the power supply out of that and try swapping it in instead. Obviously, this is going to show you straight away that the power supply is at fault. To avoid jumping to wrong conclusions though, be sure you are plugging in ALL the leads you need to. Modern motherboards need not only the large 20-pin power plug, but often additional 4 or 8 pin plugs for additional processor or video driving power. Check your motherboard manual, or look closely around the CPU fan for connectors like this. If it looks like you ought to plugging something in there, download and read through our href="http://manuals.makeuseof.com.s3.amazonaws.com/MakeUseOf.com-Your_PC_Inside_And_Out_Part_1.pdf">free guide to your PC inside and out, especially the page on power connectors.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/power-connectors.jpg" alt="computer wont turn on" width="580" height="277" />

    The final option is to try your suspected faulty one with another computer, but given that there is a chance it will harm the components I don’t suggest you try this with hardware you really value.

    Unplugging X made it work again:

    If, having unplugged everything non-essential you find your computer now boots fine, you can start the laborious process of testing each component individually. Start with the video card, then move on to additional cards and components until you find the one that’s blocking system boot.

    Beeping:

    Computers are actually remarkably good at diagnosing themselves, and will often produce their own error codes in the form of a series of beeps. Though the beep codes vary by manufacturer, you can be sure that they have something to do with either your CPU, your memory, or the video card. Check the manual or manufacturers site for codes specific to your motherboard, or you try looking at this href="http://www.pctechbytes.com/hardware/bios-beep-codes-for-ami-bios-award-bios-phoenix-bios">table of generic beep codes for older BIOSes. The most common beep code I come across is a continuous series of beeps, which indicated a memory error. It could be as simple as not seating the memory in the slot correctly (and will often come out during a move).

    If your computer will turn on and function correctly, but you sometimes still hear a series of beeps during use, it means your CPU is overheating, most probably due to a fan this is starting to fail. You can try to clear the gunk and dust away from the heat-sink and fan as a short term fix, but look to replacing the whole thing. I didn’t feature this in the list of easy DIY repairs for a reason and I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner, but if you’re serious about becoming PC hardware proficient then it’s a good href="http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_cpu.htm">process to learn.

    This pretty much covers diagnosing a PC that won’t turn on, so next time I’ll be showing you how to pinpoint hardware problems even if your PC is functioning somewhat, or at least getting to the boot phase.

    If you have any stories of hardware woes, do let us know about it in the comments. You can also feel free to post with any hardware help you might need, but you’ll get a wider range of responses if you ask in our special href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">Question and Answer site.

    7 Great Cross-Platform Emulators For 5 Classic Computer Platforms

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro12.jpg" alt="classic computer emulators" />In the same vein as the recent flurry of console class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/emulation">emulation articles, today we’re focusing on classic computer platforms of decades gone by. Whilst there were quite a few, we’ve chosen 5 of the most popular and well-known systems along with their respective emulators.

    Whilst gaming took off with the mainstream crowds in the arcades, and eventually via consoles in living rooms; early computers played their part too with often entirely different playable creations. Whether you want to relive some classic gaming moments or experience the thrill (!) of your first word processing program, these emulators can help.

    All bases are covered, be it class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/windows/">Windows, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux/">Linux or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/mac/">Mac. In addition to an emulator, you’re going to need some games or programs (ROMs, disk images) and in some cases a BIOS file.

    Commodore – 64 [ class="vt-p" href="http://frodo.cebix.net/">Frodo]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/c64.jpg" alt="classic computer emulators" width="580" height="367" />

    The Commodore 64 has gone down in history as the best-selling personal computer model ever, with somewhere between 12 and 17 million units sold over its 12 year lifespan. Initially introduced in early 1982, the Commodore 64 had a staggering 64Kb of RAM and came in a self-contained unit, incorporating a keyboard.

    The machine sold well initially as it exceeded the abilities of similar IBM machines, with improved sound and graphical abilities over its rivals. It has even been compared to Henry Ford’s iconic Model-T for its part in bringing modern, affordable technology to the masses.

    class="vt-p" href="http://frodo.cebix.net/">Frodo is a cross-platform emulator that will enable you to sample many of the 10,000 or so commercially produced titles for the platform. The homepage is packed with extra software downloads, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/">manuals and guides for writing your own C64 programs.

    Sinclair – ZX Spectrum [ class="vt-p" href="http://fms.komkon.org/Speccy/">Speccy] [ class="vt-p" href="http://k1.dyndns.org/Develop/projects/zxsp-osx/distributions/">ZXSP]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ZXSpectrum48k.jpg" alt="computer emulator" width="580" height="426" />

    Also released in 1982, the ZX Spectrum was an 8bit personal computer incorporating the keyboard-and-computer design that was so popular at the time. There were a variety of models made over the system’s lifespan, each with differing, improved innards.

    The class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-5-best-most-reliable-surces-to-download-freeware-programs/">software library features more than 20,000 titles and incredibly people are still writing for the ZX Spectrum, with more than 90 releases last year. This is more down to the popularity of emulators, and the original ZX units are highly sought after by collectors.

    class="vt-p" href="http://fms.komkon.org/Speccy/">Speccy is an emulator which supports a range of ZX Spectrum models. It runs on Windows and Linux. Mac users might want to try class="vt-p" href="http://k1.dyndns.org/Develop/projects/zxsp-osx/distributions/">ZXSP.

    Commodore – Amiga [ class="vt-p" href="http://www.amigaemulator.org/">UAE] [ class="vt-p" href="http://www.winuae.net/">WinUAE]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/amiga1200.jpg" alt="computer emulator" width="580" height="183" />

    A personal computer platform that’s very dear to my heart, the Amiga range was home to some unique and important developments for both software and games. The first Amiga system, the A1000 was described as “years ahead of its time” and hailed as the “world’s first multimedia, multitasking personal computer” by PC World in 2006, and listed as the seventh most important computer of all time in the same magazine.

    It was the budget Amiga models that really shone though – the A500, A600 and A1200 came through as real gaming machines, giving birth to still-playable and celebrated titles like Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.amigaemulator.org/">UAE is an Amiga emulator for UNIX (Linux, et al.) with class="vt-p" href="http://www.winuae.net/">WinUAE being the Windows port. There are plenty of ports of UAE to Mac OS and far more obscure platforms.

    Microsoft – MS-DOS [ class="vt-p" href="http://www.dosbox.com/">DOSBox]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/MS-DOS_Prompt_MemoryCheck.gif" alt="computer emulator" width="580" height="364" />

    For those of you who are younger than the rest of us, before Windows there was DOS (which stood for Disk Operating System). Each version of Windows released prior to XP was essentially a shell for DOS, albeit with some big and fairly obvious enhancements.

    Many games and early software suites thrived on the DOS platform. The growing popularity of IBM PCs in the early 90′s paved the way for PC-borne classics like Lucas Arts’ Monkey Island series, Apogee’s Commander Keen and id software’s groundbreaking class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-cross-platform-fps-games/">FPS, Wolfenstein.

    The success of the PC as a gaming machine wasn’t set in stone at this point either, with Commodore’s Amiga bringing up the rear (and somewhat failing catastrophically outside of the UK due to poor marketing on Commodore’s end). These days many franchises owe their inception and popularity to original DOS classics, and you can play these with the fantastic class="vt-p" href="http://www.dosbox.com/">DOSBox emulator.

    If you’re stuck and need some help, we’ve got class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/dos-computer-games-run-windows-7/">a handy article to help you on your way.

    Apple – Macintosh & Macintosh II [ class="vt-p" href="http://basilisk.cebix.net/">Basilisk II]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/mac128.jpg" alt="classic computer emulators" width="300" height="352" />

    Who could forget about Apple, and the classic Macintosh released in 1985? This was the very first personal computer to enjoy commercial success using a graphical user interface (GUI) rather than a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/command-line/">command line.

    This soon evolved, and the original Macintosh was renamed the Macintosh 128k when the upgraded 512k version came out. In 1987 Apple released the Macintosh II, which retailed for just under $5,500. Whilst it was an expensive bit of kit, it was the first PC to use a 32bit colour display and the first to be able to display photo-realistic images without expensive add-ons

    You can emulate classic Mac I & II software on your Linux, Mac OS X or Windows PC with class="vt-p" href="http://basilisk.cebix.net/">Basilisk II, an open source emulator.

    Conclusion

    With these five systems there’s enough software to entertain even the mildest of curiosities. If you long for the days of floppy disks and 8bit displays you’ll do well to start with a few of these! If you’re more interested in consoles be sure to check out our emulation series, we’ve got class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-nostalgic-emulators-vintage-video-gaming-enthusiasts-19721980/">vintage consoles, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-retro-emulators-play-early-80s-home-consoles-pc-19811986/">early 80s offerings, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-emulators-play-oldschool-16-32-bit-consoles-pc-19871993/">16 and 32bit machines and some of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-great-emulators-play-modern-home-consoles-pc-19942001/">more recent releases too.

    Any favourite classic PCs of years gone by? What did you start out on? Let it all out in the comments.

    How To Change Your Computer Name In Ubuntu 10.10 [Linux]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro1.png" alt="change computer name in ubuntu" width="240" height="180" />MakeUseOf has posted free PDF manuals for users interested in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">switching to Linux because there are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-reasons-disgruntled-windows-user-ubuntu/">many good reasons to. The href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-tools-tips-sexier-ubuntu-interface/">desktop customization options are endless, and so it’s not hard to modify bits of your computer, whether you’re in  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1004-extremely-simple-operating-system-linux/">LTS Lucid (check href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/versions-ubuntu-technology-explained/">this post to understand why there are so many different versions of Linux) or Karmic, for which there is a  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-incredible-guide-to-ubuntu-karmic-koala-linux-pdf/">comprehensive and free PDF manual.

    Today, we’ll go over a small tip involving how to modify the computer name, which you were able to set when you installed Ubuntu.

    id="more-67103"> /> You might want to change the computer name for a number of reasons: Perhaps you want to shorten the name, or maybe there was a typo in the old computer name. Whatever it is, be sure to see the following instructions, which were tested in Ubuntu 10.10, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-fun-ways-explore-ubuntu-1010-linux/">a fun OS which we have explored href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1010-maverick-meerkat-linux/">here, although these will probably work for 10.04 too. For earlier editions or versions of Ubuntu, href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8955992#post8955992">check these instructions that don’t require the use of the command line.

    • First, press Alt-F2 to bring up the Run dialog. Type the following:
    style="margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 5px; border: 1px solid #c6d7e1; background-color: #d8eaf2;">gksu gedit /etc/hostname
    • and hit Run.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/02.png" alt="change computer name in ubuntu" width="442" height="207" />

    • Type your administrator password when you’re prompted, and click OK. You’ll see a gedit text editor window open, displaying your current computer name. Replace the text with your desired name. Remember to hit Ctrl+S to save your file before closing the file.

    class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67116" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/01.png" alt="ubuntu computer name change" width="481" height="456" />

    • Now bring up the Run dialog again by pressing Alt-F2. This time, type:
    style="margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 5px; border: 1px solid #c6d7e1; background-color: #d8eaf2;">gksu gedit /etc/hosts
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/11.png" alt="ubuntu computer name change" width="459" height="227" />

    • If you get a prompt to type your administrator password, do so to proceed, but it’s possible you might not even get that prompt before the hosts file loads up in gedit. Now locate the last line of the first block of text and replace the text with the name you chose earlier. Hit Save when you’re done correcting.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/03e.png" alt="" width="580" height="368" />

    • Close the file and restart the system. Once you’re back on your desktop, open a terminal window and verify that you have your new computer name at the header.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/04.png" alt="ubuntu computer name change" width="401" height="261" />

    You should be all set if you use Ubuntu’s default web browser, Firefox. If however you use Google Chrome or Chromium, you may receive an error message that prevents the browser from opening after the system restart. I renamed the computer at least twice for this article and only got the error message after the first system renaming test.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/05.png" alt="ubuntu computer name change" width="492" height="231" />

    If you did get the error message, read on.

    • To get Google Chrome or Chromium up and running again, bring up the handy Run dialog again and type what’s next:
    style="margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 5px; border: 1px solid #c6d7e1; background-color: #d8eaf2;">/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.config/google-chrome
    • OR
    style="margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 5px; border: 1px solid #c6d7e1; background-color: #d8eaf2;">/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.config/chromium/ style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/06.png" alt="ubuntu computer name change" width="440" height="218" />

    • Find and delete the SingletonLock file.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/07.png" alt="change computer name in ubuntu" width="502" height="477" />

    • Open up Google Chrome or Chromium as either one should now run like normal in your freshly-renamed computer.

    Additional commenters from all over the web recommend doing “sudo hostname [NEW COMPUTER NAME]” on the terminal, which seems to only tease with a temporary change as the new name is nowhere to be seen after a reboot. I’ve also seen suggestions to restart the hostname service, but that hasn’t worked for me.

    Do you know of other ways, perhaps more convenient ones or ones that don’t require a system restart, to change your computer’s name in Ubuntu? Share your nuggets of wisdom in the comments!

    7 Hilarious Practical Joke Ideas To Play On Your Friend’s Computer [Windows]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;margin-top:5px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/frustratedcomputer.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="204" />For some people, playing a good practical joke isn’t only for April Fool’s day. Whether you’re the office prankster or you want to pull a really good one on your best friend, a personal computer is one of the best tools to do so.

    A computer is the type of device that lends itself to practical jokes, simply because it’s so easy to set things just enough off balance that an unsuspecting user will think things have gone completely awry. This doesn’t mean that you should do something that’s harmful, like infect it with a virus, but there are a number of little things you can do that will drive your friend up the wall.

    id="more-66046"> /> Last year, Justin outlined four really funny things you could do with your home computer to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/four-funny-ways-to-prank-your-parents-with-the-family-computer/">prank your unsuspecting parents. This included classic computer pranks like tweaking Microsoft Word auto-replace or installing the blue screen of death screensaver. I enjoyed those so much that I thought it’s high time for another round of computer pranks that will have your friend ready to throw their computer in the trash!

    7 Computer Practical Jokes

    Some of these computer pranks are more advanced, and others are a bit basic. Choose the prank based on how computer savvy your friend is. One of the fastest and easiest ways to prank someone is to manipulate the behavior of their mouse. To do this, just go to into the Control Panel and find the Mouse settings. On the Buttons tab, you’ll see settings for the left and right mouse buttons.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank1.jpg" alt="" width="482" height="481" />

    Just switch the settings so that the right button is to “click” and the left button is the “shortcut menu.”  Now, when they try to click an icon or open a file, a menu will pop up rather than the file opening.

    Another way you can tweak the mouse for a really funny prank is to slow down the pointer to the absolute slowest speed. To do this, instead of going to the Buttons tab, go into the Pointer Options and slide the pointer speed selection all the way down to the slowest setting.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank5.jpg" alt="" width="489" height="558" />

    If you’ve ever used a mouse that’s this slow, then you know how infuriating it can be. Again, these are only good for pranking non-computer savvy users, because average to advanced users will know exactly where to go in order to fix the mouse behavior.

    Now, if you want to try something that is not so subtle, try tweaking the font color for Windows settings. Many people don’t realize how easy it is to alter the look of Windows. Changing the Windows font to white will render a lot of things completely invisible. Just open the Window Color and Appearance settings in the Control Panel, select the item you want to alter (like hyperlinks, window titles or window menu items) and set the font to white.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank2.jpg" alt="" width="463" height="500" />

    A third great computer prank is a classic. The premise is that you will create a desktop background image that is identical to the user’s real desktop, except none of the icons are clickable. This confuses a lot of people into thinking their computer is locked up. Just take a quick snapshot of the desktop area using your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-tools-for-creating-screenshots-and-screencasts/">favorite screenshot app, or just using Print Screen.  Then, move all of the desktop icons to a temporary folder, completely clearing the normal desktop.

    Now you’re ready to add your static picture as the desktop background. Just right click on the desktop, go to Personalize and click on Desktop Backgrounds.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank3.jpg" alt="" width="447" height="398" />

    Go to the directory where you saved the bitmap of the desktop capture, and select it as your new desktop background. Now, when they try to click on the desktop icon over and over, nothing will happen!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank4.jpg" alt="" width="381" height="309" />

    If that prank is a little too involved for you, another great joke you can play is altering a commonly used shortcut into an annoying audio file. All you have to do is right click on the icon and in the properties, just type in the location of a really funny audio file for the shortcut target.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank6.jpg" alt="" width="398" height="325" />

    One of the funniest audio tracks I’ve used for this is “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” – it’s hilarious watching their expression when one of the most annoying songs in the world starts blasting.

    Another alternative to this prank is playing around in the Startup folder. On Windows 7, you can find Startup in the list of Program Files when you click start. Open up that folder and paste a shortcut to the annoying audio file into it.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/prank7.jpg" alt="" width="386" height="448" />

    Turn up the sound and then turn off the computer. The next time they boot up the computer, watch their reaction!

    This last prank is my own personal creation – I call it the “fake boot virus.” Basically, you create a Windows script that shuts down the computer, and put it in the Startup folder. Here is the script that will accomplish a complete shutdown of a Windows system without prompting.

    style="border: 1px solid; margin: 10px 0px; padding: 15px 10px 15px 50px; color: #00529b; background-color: #bde5f8; font-family: courier,lucida console,monospace;"><job> /> <script language=”VBScript”>

    Dim objShell

    Dim strComputer /> Dim strShutdown

    Do /> strComputer = “Owner-PC”

    strShutdown = “shutdown -s -t 0 -f -m \\” & strComputer /> set objShell = CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”) /> objShell.Run strShutdown

    Wscript.Quit

    </script> /> </job>

    Save it as “shutdown.wsf”, and place it in Startup. The moment they start up the PC, it will immediately shut down again. Watch as it dawns on them that they have some horrible computer virus! To end their misery, just boot it while holding down Shift (or into safe mode), and delete the file in the Startup folder.

    Computer pranks like these are not always enjoyable for the person being pranked – after all, some people have to struggle enough as it is just to get the computer to work normally on a good day. But sometimes, pulling a good computer prank reminds people just how vulnerable we all are to assuming the absolute worst whenever something strange starts happening with our computers.
