class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/webbrowser.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Your browser is the centerpiece to your internet experience and keeping it nice and portable is an awesome luxury. While PortableApps.com does a great job of bundling our most popular software together into portable, auto-launching applications, I tend to avoid the packages because I often install my portable applications within Dropbox. A lot of portable applications, typically designed for USB drives, don’t mesh well with Dropbox. I’ve found some that do, though.

You may not have heard of a couple of these browsers, but each and every one brings a unique benefit to your portable arsenal. Don’t let the fact that you may not have heard of them stand in the way of finding your new favorite browser.

Avant Browser

We’ve already covered a nice and in-depth review of the Avant browser, but it’s time to rehash the software now that an official portable version is readily available on their official website.

Avant is like a souped-up version of Internet Explorer. One of the main differences is how well Avant handles Flash, in comparison. Avant is only a little slower than the current Firefox build, which puts it plenty ahead of IE’s speed. It’s also got a ton of features built in, like ways to disable on-page sound, scripting, and animations right out of the box.

You can download the official portable version here.

Pale Moon

What Avant is to Internet Explorer, Pale Moon strives to be alongside Firefox. Pale Moon is an alternative, slim-downed version of the Firefox browser that is built on Firefox’s official source code. The browser has been around for years and has been proven to use less memory than the original Firefox without the user being able to notice much difference alongside the powerhouse browser that Mozilla has on their hands.

You can download Pale Moon’s official portable release from this page.

Browzar

Browzar has a distinct advantage over the rest on this list in respect that the official build of the original browser itself is portable. Browzar leaves an incredibly small fingerprint and is one of the most secure and easy-to-use browsers that I’ve used right from a flash drive.

While it does lack somethings in the features category, Browzar can’t be beaten when you’re looking for something to jump on and jump right off with. Browzar will even clear every single bit of sensitive, session-specific data after closing.

You can download it here.

Opera@USB

I decided to save the best for last. While Opera may already be my favorite official browser in the first place, it is not the Opera team who developed this third-party portable port. Nonetheless, it’s flawless. It’ll even update alongside released Opera versions and still maintain it’s portable status.

Other than that, there’s really not too much more to explain about Opera@USB. It is simply Opera in a portable package. Give Opera a shot just for a few days and I promise you’ll start to fall in love a little. You can click here to download Opera@USB.

Though unheard of and maybe even a little obscure, these portable gems will help put your flash drive on the right track. If you enjoyed this list, check out 100 other portable applications that you may enjoy. Shoot me a line about any of these in the comments.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/i-dont-like-this.jpg" alt="things people do on facebook"/>Hello, Facebook user. Browsing Facebook for at least an hour a day? Have over 200 friends? Used Facebook for a few months? By the time you’ve read through this post, I can promise that you’ll have nodded your head in agreement at least once.

When Google+ was first announced, I immediately assumed it would be a hit. Not because of how Google is so interlaced with the rest of our internet, but because of “Facebook fatigue“. Change is very refreshing and exciting (as long as it’s not Facebook changing… itself) and seems to have a gravitational pull online.New stuff is cool to us. The great transition from MySpace to Facebook was a clear example.

But, how does one fall victim to Facebook fatigue? While that’s a question that is conditional to the temperament of each individual user, I can bet that experiencing any of the following five antics will have you begging for a Dislike button.

We ranted a bit with 5 Things You Need To Stop Posting On Facebook. I rant on with five more.

Indirect Status Updates

If you’re above the age of 30, you probably don’t experience this horrible Facebook phenomenon quite as often as the rest of us. This is the go-to move of every disgruntled 16-year-old girl. It’s also high up there with males who need a cowardly and passive-aggressive way to openly rage at their ex-girlfriend. In the end, both end up looking pathetic, psychotic, and/or immature. Come on, you know what I’m talking about:

“I hate him so much. I can’t stand being around him every day of my life.”

“I like how my best friend seems to never be there for me…”

“Seriously, who hangs up on somebody in the middle of a conversation?”

All of these are cries for attention. All of these are very narrowly directed at one person or one small group of people. All of these are weird and annoying. All of these could just as easily point directly at the person, but that would still be immature. Send them a damn personal message, don’t go embarrassing yourself and looking like a wreck in front of your friends. Stop it.

<img
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/annoying_facebook.jpg" alt="things people do on facebook" width="525" height="300" />

I feel a little different about cute messages or ones that are positive and cheerful in nature. You get a pass on that, just don’t do it more than three times per week please.

MySpace-esque Behavior & “Games”

I hate to be the guy to claim, “That’s so MySpace!” but listen: The general quality of the Facebook community was at its peak when MySpace was alive and well. MySpace was for glittery graphics, profile songs, Mafia Wars, and comment spam. It generally seemed to appeal to kids in high school and younger. Facebook was for the clean-cut college student and above. It was for people who enjoyed an organized, no-nonsense approach to social networking.

<img
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/myspace-a-place-for-headaches.jpg" alt="annoying facebook posts" width="400" height="249" />

Unfortunately, that has all changed. Here are a few of the cancers that Facebook has unfortunately inherited:

The “TBH” word game – “LMS TBH” (Like my status, to be honest) is a little social game where users who Like another’s status will receive an honest opinion about themselves posted to their Wall.

“Inbox me numbers” – This is basically a private and more ridiculous mutation of TBH. You send a private message to a user with a random number. Instead of posting to your Wall, they post the numbers they received to their own Wall and then an opinion or memory about the corresponding person who sent them that particular number.

Ridiculous chain messages – “Repost this status or 12 kids will die of cancer”, “R.I.P. David: Just kidding. If you had an emotional response to David’s fake death, repost this on your Wall”, “Facebook is going to shut down in three days unless you pay them $50 for an account, let’s repost this a million times and stop them”, etc.

Friend-tagging word games – “Look at your friends displayed to the left. The first five are your co-stars in the next terrible sci-fi movie,” with five witty character names to label for each, etc.

There are more examples out there, but I’m annoyed in even describing these four.

Using Apps that Spam Walls or Tags

Okay, you definitely know this one. FarmVille? Sims Social? Horoscopes? The “Report Card” app that tags a ridiculous amount of your friends? Every birthday calendar app that obnoxiously invades your Wall?

This is just flat-out annoying. A lot of these applications spam your friends’ Walls, too. The fact that it spams yours is annoying enough. This hits hard because you’ve got to be considerate about things that not only affect your friends’ profiles, but yours as well. We see it on our News Feed. It spams the hell out of us. How about an application for horoscopes that messages you privately? Don’t get your hopes up, it’ll never happen because these apps thrive on virability and they need exposure through you so that they can be monetized.

<img
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/facebook_spammy.jpg" alt="annoying facebook posts" width="580" height="265" />

Being a Downer

Sometimes it’s like Frownbook. Lighten up! If you use your Facebook only to vent out your frustration and depression, you’re doing it wrong. I’ve never done it myself, but I can’t imagine that it is the best form of therapy. See a professional if it becomes a habit.

<img
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/sad_facebook.png" alt="annoying facebook posts" width="500" height="158" />

Again, it goes back to being considerate and we all see it. I don’t want to be brought down by your six depressing posts per day. If that happens, I’m going to have to remove you, and then what if you notice? That’s going to upset you even more, maybe!

Using Facebook as Twitter

You know that friend who blows up your News Feed with a new status every 30 minutes? Have them look into Twitter. Maybe they’ve heard of it. Facebook’s not the place to tell us you’re waking up, driving to the store, watching TV, eating food, feeling sick, and laying in bed all within the same day and in separate posts.

<img
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;"src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/facebook-vs-twitter.jpg" alt="things people do on facebook" width="580" height="295" />

So, who among you is saying – guilty as charged? Facebook is a social network. Just like our real world one, it falls upon us to keep it clutter free. Don’t you think so? What are your pet peeves when it comes to Facebook.

Based on some of my past articles, you may already know that I hail from the online community of Reddit (and so do a couple of my fellow writers). However, as with any online community, there are certain types of users that absolutely drive me nuts. But do I actually do anything about it? Not really.

With that in mind, I typically try to be kind, and furthermore, I try to remember this wise adage that a good friend once told me – “Don’t feed the trolls.” Basically, it’s always a good option to take the high road. However, it’s fine to occasionally vent off-site, right?

So, here’s taking a look at three types of Reddit commenters that drive me up the wall.

Irrelevant Commenters

I don’t understand it, but every once in a while, a commenter will pop up out of the blue with something that only halfway relates to the Reddit post. I’m not quite sure, but this is a character that I dub the “Irrelevant Commenter”.

The Irrelevant Commenter shows up in the strangest of places, and sometimes, he’ll even venture away from Reddit onto other sites, leaving his comments that have virtually nothing to do with the link. Strangely enough, when someone responds to his totally irrelevant comment, he seems to disappear without even an explanation of his actions. But no matter where he is, he always leaves a comment that barely has anything to do with the subject that is being discussed.

You may actually link to this article that you are reading right now on Reddit, and you may even earn sweet karma for it! However, if the Irrelevant Commenter shows up, he will leave something like, “I just love MakeUseOf – particularly that American writer J. Lockhart. He looks so good in that tie!”

As you can tell, the comment is somewhat connected to the link. Unfortunately though, it provides zilch when it comes to constructively contributing to the conversation. Despite my distaste for the Irrelevant Commenter, I find him just a little more forgivable than the other two.

Grammar Nazis

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a writer, and yes, I know quite a bit about grammar, proper spelling, and the various other twists and turns that the English language likes to take. I’m certainly not perfect with every single thing that I put on the page (to my editors, I apologize), but I’d like to think that I have passed the stage of being a novice when it comes to writing.

However, with that in mind, even I don’t have a problem with the occasional grammatical error on a Reddit post. The purpose of the site is to share information and ideas with other people – not be online masterpieces of literature. Despite my fear of the English language’s eventual demise, I can usually let it slide when it comes to Reddit (and yes, even Facebook).

Unfortunately though, for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. The action in this case is my flippant attitude towards grammar on Reddit, and the reaction is the guy that likes to pick through even the most important of posts and point out the minor grammar errors that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand. That being said, Grammar Nazis are simply not my favorite Redditors. We’ve got better things to worry about, my friends.

Repost Hall Monitors

The Internet is full of recycled information, so what ends up on your monitor is typically going to end up on another person’s months from now. Heck, it’s even more likely that whatever is currently on your monitor was on someone else’s before even that. People come and go on Reddit, and it’s a given that users are going to repost stuff that they have just discovered.

There are quite a few folks who tend to complain whenever there’s a repost on Reddit, and for some reason, I don’t have an earthly clue as to why. Part of my curiosity stems from this question – are they on Reddit that much so that they know each and every time a link is reposted? C’mon.

Sure, you can check to see if a link has already been submitted using the site’s search function before posting. However, when the last time that same link was posted months ago, it might be okay to bring it back. Beyond that, even the creators of Reddit ask the users not complain about the reposts through the Reddiquette – the law of the land for all things Reddit.

The irony of the matter is that those who are complaining are the ones that are actually in violation of the website’s usage policies. Some of them complain that the “original posters aren’t getting the karma that they deserve”. I say that the Repost Hall Monitors are probably worrying more about the karma than the original poster.

(By the way, you may have noticed that the Reddiquette also says not to complain about complaints about reposts. Good thing we’re not on Reddit, right?)

Conclusion

These are just a few of my pet peeves about Reddit users, and I’m definitely not trying to get all “holier than thou” on you with the three mentioned. However, some people tend to take the site just a little too seriously. That’s all it is, though – a website.

What are some of your pet peeves about Reddit? What other sites have users that drive you nuts?

The main reason why you would want to delete similar images is to save some space on your hard drive. Going through your image folder deleting extra images is too time consuming. Besides, many of the similar images can have different names which makes identifying them almost impossible.

Luckily, there’s a free tool to semi-automate the process.

SimilarImages is a desktop application that finds similar (or duplicate) images on your hard drive among different folders.

The tool has already been mentioned in our round-up of ways to find duplicate image files on a Windows PC but the tool definitely deserves a closer look.

Settings

The best thing about the tool is that it lets you configure the “similarity” threshold with enables you to configure which image pairs should be shown when comparing.

Image file pairs with a comparison value greater than the set threshold are ignored. Some recommended threshold settings include:

To find duplicates(fastest mode): 0 – 10

To scan through photos: about 12

To scan through folders containing scans: 50 – 60

You can also set the folder preferences:

Inclusive Search will only compare files located in the same folder with each other.

Exclusive Search means that only files not contained within the same folder will compared with each other.

Speed

If you have a lot of images and photos on your computer, the first check will take quite a while. However the great thing about the tool is that it keeps its own index of scanned images. Next check will run across its fast Graphics Library. This makes scanning much faster.

The program even keeps track of your not-a-duplicate decisions: if you enable Cache-System, SimilarImages will remember when you indicate that a pair is not a duplicate. When you later check the same folders again it would bring up the same false-positives.

You can access and clear the gallery from the tool “Cache” menu.

(Semi-) Automated Deletion

The tool also aims at making deleting duplicate files faster. Semi-automated deletion feature helps you choose which file to delete from a pair faster: when enabled, one file of a pair will be pre-selected depending on your rules.

For example, you can set to always pre-select a smaller image in a pair or the one with lower resolution or always the newer file. This definitely makes deleting extra images faster!

You can always set the tool to auto-delete a duplicate image in a pair (based on your above settings).

Working with Image Pairs

Once the application is done scanning the specified folders, it shows you the similar image pairs. Each image has a thumbnail, file size, dimensions, last-modified date and other properties. You can delete any of the files or replace one with the other.

The X-icon lets you delete the file.

The TwoFiles-icon lets you swap the file. (Swapping means in this context: The other file will be overwritten with this file, thus the contents of the first file will be kept but with the name of the second file.)

The Clear-icon lets you delete both files.

The Runner-icon lets you delete the file marked for semi-automated deletion.

Looks like a great tool to sort out your stored image files and free up some space. What are your thoughts?

I recently picked up an external hard drive for my Mac (one terabyte of memory to be exact), but I really needed to use it for both my Mac and my Windows laptop. However, as you may know, Mac formatting and PC formatting for external hard drives are totally different.

Granted, it’s possible you may already know how to partition an external hard drive DIY-style. Furthermore, your hard drive may already come with onboard software that does it for you (but honestly, I really don’t like using those included apps at all). However, let’s take a look at how to do so.

Open The Disk Utility Application

In order to prep things for your partition, it would be best to use an external hard drive that you absolutely do not have any important files on whatsoever. If you already have thrown some stuff in there (like I did when I was first trying this out), go ahead and copy them over to your computer. With that being said, make sure that the external hard drive is at least plugged in for this to work (the reason I say this is the same reason that costume companies write “cape does not enable wearer to fly” on their superhero outfits).

In case you have never used this app before, just go into your Mac’s Applications, click on the Utilities folder, and find the Disk Utility application. (For those of you still searching, it looks like a hard drive with a stethoscope on it.) Open it up, and you’ll be treated to a brand-spankin’ new window on your screen.

On the left-side of this window, you will see the different hard drives connected to your computer. You will see your main hard drive (or hard drives) located within the computer on this section of the window, but you should also be able to find your external hard drive somewhere in the midst of it all.

After you do this, be sure to open the contextual menu of this hard drive (two-finger click on trackpad or CTRL + click) and select the Unmount option of the drive. This is very important in order for this project to work for you.

Set Up The Partition

As you might be able to tell by the screenshots, I have already partitioned my external hard drive (JxHart Mac and JxHart PC). However, you can still follow along by looking at the rest of the Disk Utility window.

When you first look at this window, you will see a few tabs that give you a variety of options for your external hard drive. One of them will simply say Partition, and as you might be able to guess, this is the one that you want to select. After doing so, you will arrive on a menu that provides you with what you need to partition the hard drive. The item on this page that you should look for will be a drop-down menu labeled Volume Scheme.

Since we are partitioning the external hard drive for just both Mac and PC, you should set the Volume Scheme up for two partitions. Once you do this, you will be given two easy-to-use graphic images of simple boxes that represent the two partitions. What you can now do with these is set up how much memory you want for each partition.

Work Out The Sizes And Formats

On my external hard drive, I gave the Mac portion 950 gigs of space and the PC portion 50 gigabytes of space simply because I use the Mac side a little bit more. With that in mind, I am still able to open up the PC portion of the hard drive on my Mac and take files from it. However, I cannot add or delete files. That’s why it’s good to have the partition.

After you have decided on the sizes of each partition, you should then go back and change the names for each one. I would suggest that they reflect what you will be using each partition for, such as “Mac HD” and “PC HD”. Realistically, you could change the names of the partitions before sizing them, but this is really up to you.

Finally, you absolutely need to change the writing format of your external hard drive for each partition so this does exactly what you are wanting this to. To do so, select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option for the Mac side of your external hard drive and the ExFAT option for the PC side of your external hard drive.

When you are ready for the partitioning to begin, simply click Apply and you are good to go. It’s really simple to do, and you should be able to complete the project within minutes.

Conclusion

Most likely you can (definitely) follow a similar process with other operating systems such as Linux or even some hipster OS that we’ve never even heard about. Furthermore, you could make two or more Mac-related partitons as a way to just keep yourself organized. I’ll also assume that you could use one of those partitions for Time Machine if you are using something a little more permanent.

Which other apps or programs do you use to partition hard drives or external hard drives? Do you have any other tips to add on to what I have written here?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cloudbackup-icon.png?54167" alt="online data back up"/>Back up information you’re currently trusting the cloud with to your own hard drive. With support for most Google products and a few others, including Twitter and IMAP mail, Cloud Export is a piece of software every cloud computing enthusiast should probably look into.

The cloud is great, but it’s out of your hands. Most of the time that’s fine, but there is always the chance that something goes wrong cloud-side. As such, if you really want to know that your information is safe, you should back it up yourself. That’s why the Data Liberation Front, a service provided by Google, offers guides for backing up Google products.

Guides are nice, but automated software is better. CloudExport is based on what Data Liberation offers; it’s just automated. It comes in the form of a Windows executable (which is easy to use) and a cross-platform python script (slightly less easy to use, but not impossible).

Using Cloud Export

Get started by downloading Cloud Export. You’ll find a .exe file for Windows users and a Python script for everyone else. Windows users can install as usual. Keep reading to find Ubuntu instructions.

Fire up Cloud Export and you’ll see a simple user interface. Click “Add new account” to get started:

As you can see, you’ll need to pick which things you want to back up. Click a general category and you’ll be presented with individual things you can backup:

Select your services and enter your account information. Note that, to back up Gmail, you’ll need to enable IMAP in Gmail.

One you’ve go everything set up you can start the backup process. This might take a long time, especially if you’re downloading all of your email, so be patient:

Your files will be put wherever is configured in settings; by default a new “Export” folder is added to your user folder:

As you can see, I backed up my contacts, calendar and photos. I was particularly happy to get my high-res photos from Picasa:

Overall this is a great way to back up the cloud. Try it out yourself and let us know how you like it!

Currently Supported Cloud Backups

Cloud Backup supports a lot of services already. They are, according to the readme:

Normal Google accounts:

Contacts

Gmail

Reader

Picasa

Blogger

Health

Finance

Calendar

Talk

Docs

Google Apps accounts:

Contacts

Gmail

Calendar

Talk

Docs

Twitter

Identi.ca

RSS

XMPP/Jabber

IMAP (download email)

OFX

See an application you’d like to be included? You can request applications be added to CloudExport.

Ubuntu Instructions

Getting this working in Ubuntu is possible. You’ll need to install one package:
python-tk
. Install this using apt-get or simply click here.

Once you’ve done that you simply need to make the file
cloudexportw.py
executable, then run it from the command line:

python cloudexportw.py

The process should be similar on other Linux systems; feel free to leave information about this in the comments below.

Conclusion

Backing up your information is important, but how many of us regularly back up information we store on the cloud? It doesn’t matter how much you love and trust the companies that are storing your data for you; something could eventually go wrong. If that happens, you’ll be glad you backed up your information.

Do you think it’s worthwhile, though? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, along with any other tips for backing up cloud services.<br
