Wallch: A Desktop Rotator With An Awesome Earth At Night Effect Built In [Linux]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-icon.png" alt="linux desktop rotator" />Rotate your Linux wallpaper whatever way you like it. Whether you want to set up a precise, well-timed “playlist” of wallpapers or show off a random assortment of your favorite pictures, href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/wall-changer/files/2.0/Gnome%202%20Version/">Wallch is the perfect program for adding some variety to your Linux computing. It even offers a real-time earth at night wallpaper.

We’ve taught you a bit about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/wallpaper/">wallpaper here at MakeUseOf. We’ve even shown you some Linux wallpaper advice where you can  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/completely-customize-kde-wallpaper-linux/">completely customize your KDE wallpaper. Not all Linux users use KDE however, and even outside of KDE, not all Linux wallpaper managers work with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1104-unity-big-leap-linux/">Ubuntu’s Unity desktop. Wallch does, but that’s not the only reason this software is worth checking out. Adding wallpaper and setting it up to show it just the way you want it is not only simple but fun. Simply put, it’s wallpaper management done right. I’d like to see this, or something similar, built into a future release of Ubuntu and other distros.

What It Does

Load Wallch for the first time and you’ll need to add some pictures. You can add individual pictures or entire folders; just click the buttons to the right of your “playlist”:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-main.png" alt="linux desktop rotator" width="580" height="344" />

Once you’ve added some pictures you can organize your collection. Remove shots that won’t work as wallpaper, or put the pictures in the order you desire. Or, if you don’t desire order, select the random option. You can set an amount of time for wallpapers to stick around, or you can randomize the timing as well.

Head over to settings (click “Edit“, then “Preferences“) to get a bit more control over the application:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-settings.png" alt="desktop rotation software" width="572" height="391" />

You’ll almost certainly want to turn off wallpaper notifications. I’ve no idea why someone would want a bubble popping up telling them their wallpaper has changed. Isn’t seeing the different wallpaper enough? Whatever.

Earth At Night!

Want something a little different? Wallch offers, as an alternative to folders full of wallpaper, a wallpaper that reflects reality. It’s a satellite image of earth showing where it is day and where it is night.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-earthaction.jpg" alt="desktop rotation software" width="580" height="220" />

The really cool part? This updates to reflect the real world. Every half hour you’ll have a slightly different picture reflecting the earth’s rotation and its effect.

Do you want to set this up? Click Edit, then click Extras. You’ll then see a simple configuration menu.

href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-liveearth.png"> class="size-full wp-image-84548 aligncenter" title="wallch-liveearth" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wallch-liveearth.png" alt="linux desktop rotator" width="580" height="260" />

You’ll need to press “Stop” in the main windows before you can do this, if you had a slideshow running already. Once you do that you’ll have access to one of the cooler wallpapers in existence.

Install Wallch

Ready to install? href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/wall-changer/files/2.0/Gnome%202%20Version/">Download Wallch at SourceForge. Debian and Ubuntu users will find a handy .deb file; other Linux users will need to compile source code. Hopefully packages for other Linux distros are coming soon. Heck, this program is ready to be added to repositories.

Conclusion

Wallpaper switchers aren’t exactly useful, but they can be fun. Computers can become mere workplaces, but every office needs some decoration. This software lets you customize your virtual workplace easily. I’m glad I found this one, even if I plan on mostly using the world at night wallpaper.

Do you find this program useful, cool or neither? Let me know in the comments below, along with any alternative programs for the job. Also feel free to post links to your favorite desktop wallpapers.

I found this program href="http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/08/wallch-wallpaper-changer-adds-unity-features/">thanks to OMG! Ubuntu, an Ubuntu blog I love to read. Thanks guys!

10 Environmental Games That Teach Kids About Earth, Ecology & Conservation

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Earth-Child.jpg" alt="environmental games" width="200" height="258" />It has often been said that the kids of today will inherit the Earth of tomorrow. It will surely be one where the challenges of climate change and environmental conservation will be stiffer.

With the right eco-education, we can hope they will hit the ground running. A lot of schools and educational institutions are doing their bit by including the href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/environment">environment as part of the curriculum. Words like ‘carbon footprint’ and global warming’ comes to them as easily as the name of any present-day rock star.

That’s cool. But who said that ecological or environmental education needs to be bookish or donnish?  Thanks to online games, it can be brought out from textbooks into the fun world. Online environmental games games that teach class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/kids/">kids about animals and conservation make the task interactive.

id="more-52330"> /> class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/children/">Children can immediately learn that each action has a contributing effect. Plus, these interactive class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-educational-websites-for-children-that-are-fun/">educational websites on the environment make both the teaching and learning enjoyable without losing out on the lessons.

Here are ten games and game websites that teach kids about the environment and the world around them.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.planet-science.com/randomise/start.html">Planet Science

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games01.jpg" alt="environmental games" width="580" height="371" />

The Planet Science games cupboard is a collection of online interactive games and other fun activities like quizzes. Try your hand on Planet 10 and see if you can create a perfect world. It’s not that easy because you have to mix and match the building blocks to create a perfect world.

Or you could learn a bit about energy and its conservation from the lighter games like Energize.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/climate_challenge/">BBC Climate Change

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games02.jpg" alt="ecology games" width="580" height="414" />

Here’s your chance to see if you can do better in the hot seat. The game tests your decision making skills while holding the top job of President of the European Nations. You must tackle climate change and stay popular enough with the voters to remain in office.

class="vt-p" href="http://climway.cap-sciences.net/us/index.php">Clim’way

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games03.jpg" alt="ecology games" width="580" height="378" />

The Clim’way game is again about helping the larger community reach some specific climate goals. You have to create a climate plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a certain percentage in a certain time frame. Your plans can include setting up alternative energy sources, reducing human consumption etc.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.webearthonline.com/">Web Earth Online

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games04.jpg" alt="ecology games" width="580" height="405" />

How would you cope in the environment of today if you were an animal or bird? Use this multi player online game to find out. Pitted against you will be species which may be friend or foe. Then you have the natural world to deal with too.

You will get to play through the entire life cycle of the animal you choose. Like all animal species, the objective is to survive and thrive. The basic game is free.

class="vt-p" href="http://resources.kaboose.com/games/earthday.html">Earth Day Games

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games05.jpg" alt="ecology games" width="580" height="351" />

Earth Day has passed us by, but the games that were set up to promote it endure on many sites around the web. Kaboose.com has a small collection of simple Flash based environmental games like class="vt-p" href="http://funschool.kaboose.com/globe-rider/earth-day/games/game_clean_up_your_world.html" target="_blank">Clean Up Your World. The games are simple enough to introduce the youngest of the lot to the need for environmental cleanliness.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.epa.gov/recyclecity/">Recycle City

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games06.jpg" alt="green games" width="580" height="299" />

Continuing in the same spirit of cleaning up the litter around you, head for Recycle City. In the Dumptown Game, as the Dumptown Manager, you can create your own scavenger hunt and learn what it takes to help protect the environment.

class="vt-p" href="http://wwf.panda.org/how_you_can_help/games/">World Wildlife Fund

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games07.jpg" alt="green games" width="580" height="367" />

As WWF says, these are games with a message. Nine games listed on one page and a tenth one on Facebook (that’s about looking after a polar bear). My picks are the blaster games. For instance, in the Toxic Blaster, I am piloting a jet-sub into the insides of a polar bear, a whale, and a man to blast away toxic molecules. But be warned, those contaminants can destroy the sub too.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.ecokids.ca/pub/games_activities/index.cfm">Ecokids

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games08.jpg" alt="green games" width="580" height="379" />

The Canadian website Ecokids has quite a list of little environmental games arranged in categories like Wildlife, Climate Change, Energy, Water, Waste, Land Use etc. The learning based environmental games are also bunched up according to age levels. For instance, in The Journey of a Wildlife Photographer you have to become a wildlife photographer and check out how animals and birds have adapted to the environment.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/Vermi/">The Adventures Of Vermi The Worm

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games09.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="293" />

Go along with Vermi the worm and learn the basics of vermicomposting and its benefits, plus other waste management strategies like recycling. Along the way you will meet other characters like Bubba the Worm, Hugh Hammer, Sunny Flower, and Trashcan. While learning you have to help your buddies too as they reduce, reuse, recycle what’s waste.

class="vt-p" href="http://eelink.net/pages/EE+Activities+-+Interactive">Environmental Education On The Internet

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Environmental-Games10.jpg" alt="environmental games" width="580" height="424" />

This huge list of environmental games and related learning activities is thanks to the North American Association For Environmental Education. From the Second Life based class="vt-p" href="http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/outreach/#sl">NOAA Virtual World to the educational class="vt-p" href="http://astroventure.arc.nasa.gov/">Astro-Venture from NASA where you have to design a habitable planet, the web resources cover quite a lot of environmental ground.

Thanks to online games of various hues, learning need not be a chore anymore. So finish all that homework fast. There’s lot of interactive fun to be had on the World Wide Web. And tell us if you have a favorite environmental game that you would like the world to know about.

    Some Tips & Tricks While Using Google Earth Street View

    google earth street viewGoogle Earth is a great tool to enhance our knowledge of Earth’s geography and, with Google Earth Street View enabled, it is possible for anyone to have a virtual tour of the destinations they love or plan to visit.

    Street View can be enabled in Google Earth by checking the layer of the same name under the Layers section. Once the Street View layer is turned on, geographical locations which have been photographed by the Google Street View vehicles show up in the map marked by little camera icons.

    Even though USA and some other nations have been exhaustively covered, Street View is not available for all countries owing to various reasons including privacy and national security. But wherever Street View panoramas are available, you can apply the following tips to get the best out of Google Earth.

    Navigation

    google earth street search

    Left click on the camera icon of a location to bring up the Placemark with details like physical address of that location. You can launch Street View by clicking on the link in the placemark or by double clicking on the camera icon.

    google earth street view

    Some locations have multiple layers of Google Earth Street View embedded with each layer marking a significant landmark in or around the location. To find locations with layers, just hover the mouse over the location and if you see the Compass symbol, there is more to that place. For example, in the case of Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Library is also linked to the Street View icon and clicking on it takes us directly to the venue.

    Accessing The Panorama

    All the Street View images offer a 360 degree panoramic view of the location. Panoramas cannot be more awesome but it will be quite annoying to see a particular section of the image immediately. Like a puppy chasing its tail, we will have to move left or right to find the spot we are looking for. To avoid this in Google Earth, hover your mouse over the arrows on the top right corner of the Street View.

    google earth street search

    A rectangular thumbnail view of the Street View is displayed and you can just click on it to view the exact location you want to see without having to go round and round the panorama.

    Finding The Distance

    google earth street search

    By using the Ruler tool, we can find the distance between two Street View locations. Once you select the ruler option, just connect the line between two Street View Icons to view the distance between the two.

    Adding Other Layers

    google earth street view

    From the Layers section, we can add overlays to complement the street view. For example, adding the 3D buildings and weather layers adds 3D models of buildings & weather information to the location. These layers can be viewed by adjusting the transparency slider which sits just above the Layers section.

    Final Thoughts

    Street View has been implemented in both Google Maps and Google Earth. However, the Google Earth Street View implementation offers a better 3D experience when viewing the surroundings. Users can also add their own placemarks and create paths between places for future reference & travel.

    One gripe of mine is that the images are not of very high quality and often are fuzzy & look smudged. Considering the fact that Google Earth is a desktop application, high definition images can be handled without hogging system resources unlike a web browser. Hopefully Google will add images of higher resolutions in the near future.

    Google Earth can be a fun application too. Check out how you can use Google Earth to play games, feel the speed of a flight simulator or investigate conspiracy theories.

    A rectangular thumbnail view of the Street View is displayed and you can just click on it to view the exact location you want to see without having to go round and round the panorama.

    Finding The Distance

    By using the Ruler tool, we can find the distance between two Street View locations. Once you select the ruler option, just connect the line between two Street View Icons to view the distance between the two.

    Adding Other Layers
