GetFoldersize Calculates Hard Disk Usage Quickly & Easily [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gfs8.png" alt="" />Have you ever went to download something only to realize that your hard drive is almost full? Have you even wondered where all of your space is going? I know I have, and fortunately GetFoldersize is here to rectify the situation by calculating the exact amount of space every single folder on your computer is using.

This is great because you can decide what you really need and what you don’t. You can then realize that maybe you don’t need that 300GB folder of “adult entertainment” you have held onto for years.

It will take a little time and effort on your part, but thanks to GetFoldersize, it becomes a lot easier to find out what is taking up the largest amount of space on your drive. Once you free up the space with GetFoldersize, make sure to adopt some helpful class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-ways-free-up-disk-space-netbook/">techniques to help conserve space and keep your hard drive running like a dream.

Installation

Head over to class="vt-p" href="http://www.getfoldersize.com/">GetFoldersize’s website, click download and choose one of the available servers to download from. They have a standard Windows edition, as well as a portable edition if you prefer to install the program to a thumb drive. They support every major version of Windows in both 32 and 64 bit.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gfs1.png" alt="" width="560" height="414" />

Once the file is downloaded, extract and run the .exe. Follow the installer instructions.

Using The Program

GetFoldersize has one main purpose, and that is to calculate the amount of space all the folders on your drive are taking up, and then break it down by percentage, so you can see exactly where your space is used. The program is very easy to use, so even a computer novice will be able to run it smoothly.

When the program first opens you are given all your drives and the available space on each. You get a percentage of how much space is free, and how much space is used.

You can either scan all your system drives, which will take a little time depending on how big they are and how much stuff you have on them, or you can choose one drive and run a scan on just that one. The buttons for scanning your drive are at the top of the screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gfs4.png" alt="" width="519" height="236" />

The results will show up on the left side of the screen. It will display all the folders on the drive, how much space each one is occupying and the overall percentage of the drive it is using. To navigate through the various folders on your drive simply click the plus and minus buttons next to a folder name to expand or contract that folder.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gfs5.png" alt="" width="500" height="137" />

Features

The most useful reason for running a scan like this is to find out which programs are really sucking down your space. When you go to the Add/Remove programs section on Windows, many of the programs do not list their size. With GetFoldersize that will no longer be a problem, since it will scan your program files folder and let you know exactly what useless program is sucking the life from your hard drive.

GetFoldersize also allows you to scan remote machines on your network. This is pretty nifty for businesses that want to know where their hard drive resources are going.

It will also find the largest file on a drive. This allows you to quickly and easily tell which files are taking up your space the most. Simply click the icon labeled “123″ to see a list of all files sorted by size.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gfs7.png" alt="" width="398" height="55" />

When you find something that is taking up too much space which you don’t need any more, you can delete the file right there in the program. So there’s no need to open up Windows Explorer to get rid of the space eaters.

Conclusion

class="vt-p" href="http://www.getfoldersize.com">GetFoldersize is a pretty cool program that does what it sets out to do, and does it in a very easy fashion. It’s completely free, and worth checking out if you are looking to clean up your hard drives and get some better performance out of your machine.

Did you try GetFoldersize? What was taking up all of your space? Let us know in the comments.

Site To Phone Lets You Easily Send Links & Text To Your Smartphone

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image62.png?54167" alt="send text to phone" />I spend a large chunk of my life in front of my computer. For those rare times I need to leave my chair and actually go do something in the real world, I sometimes want to take a chunk of the Web with me. Perhaps it’s a link to a Google Map helping me get to where I want to go (assuming it’s not the bathroom), or a bit of text about the place.

Google already offers something called class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chrometophone&hl=en">Chrome to Phone, but it’s very limited. It works only with Chrome, and only with Android devices.   class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/">Site to Phone, despite the similar moniker, actually supports all major browsers (not just Chrome) and all major phone OS’s (not just Android).

Upon arriving at the website, you’re presented with a huge button that simply cannot be missed:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image63.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="580" height="212" />

Tapping the button generates an ID, and invites you to browse to it from the phone. This is something you’ll have to do manually. Grab your phone and tap out the address as it appears on the screen.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image64.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="426" height="390" />

Let’s do that right now.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image65.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

Rather than get an APK file or a Market link with a purpose-build Android app, we’re presented with a simple list of instructions using what the phone already offers. In other words, this is just a glorified bookmark. Some people may think it’s a bit low-tech, but personally, I like the idea of making my phone do more without actually installing new apps.

The instructions didn’t work exactly as planned, because I use an alternative launcher. I had to add the bookmark manually to my launcher ( class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex">Go Launcher EX), but once that was done, it looked like this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image66.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone from computer" width="300" height="500" />

Tapping the button indeed brought me back to the page, where I clicked the “Complete Setup” button. Instantly, the window changes – I’m in:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image67.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="580" height="389" />

That’s it! I can now paste anything in that box, hit Send to phone, and it will show up on the smartphone version of the website. Sure, the downside is that I won’t get push notifications and links won’t automatically open, but it took mere seconds, was free, and did not require any software installation. Also, note the huge range of mobile OS’s and browsers supported: Since Site to Phone is implemented in such a simple way, it can easily support just about anything that has Web access.

Okay, let’s try it out by sending some text. I just entered a bit of text on the desktop, hit Send, and tapped the shortcut on my home screen. The page reloaded on my phone’s browser, and I got this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image68.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="300" height="500" />

Yes, so they’ve added a needless escape character (I typed “I’ve” and they rendered “I\’ve”), but other than that, that’s exactly what I wrote. I can now easily copy and paste that text. Sadly, sending a link didn’t work as well as I expected it to:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image69.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="361" />

As you can see, the URL wasn’t turned into a link. That’s a bit of a downer, but maybe I’ve done something wrong (please enlighten me in the comments, if so).

Back on the desktop side of things, you may not want to go to the Site to Phone website everytime you want to send over a quick snippet of text to your phone. So now would be a good time to look at the browser tools Site to Phone offers:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image70.png?54167" border="0" alt="send phone text" width="580" height="301" />

So there’s a bookmarklet (for anything and everything), an IE Accelerator and a Chrome extension. Let’s try the Chrome extension. We get a toolbar button, and clicking it instantly sends the current page to the phone:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image71.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="445" height="170" />

Tapping the link on my phone’s home screen launches me instantly onto the site I sent to the phone:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image72.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="300" height="500" />

But getting to my previous notes is difficult – going to the website on the phone just sends me to MakeUseOf again. I tried several times, but kept getting the same thing. This may be one case where this minimalistic app oversteps its bounds and tries to be a bit too clever for the user’s own good. To fix this, go into the class="vt-p" href="http://sitetophone.com/options.php">options page and enable Device control panel:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image73.png?54167" border="0" alt="image" width="439" height="197" />

Now, when you tap the shortcut icon on the phone home screen, you’re taken to the Site to Phone page even if you’ve just sent a link to the phone.

The Chrome add-on also lets you send text to your phone effortlessly. Simply select any chunk of text in Chrome and right-click it:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image74.png?54167" border="0" alt="send text to phone" width="523" height="193" />

Tapping “Send text to phone” just works; you don’t get a notification or any other bells and whistles, but when you go to the website on your phone, you’re going to find that text waiting for you right there.

Bottom Line

Site to Phone gets a thumbs-up from me. I love the minimalistic way this solution uses existing, simple and widely supported Web technologies, and the huge amount of devices and browsers it supports. If you’re looking for a low-fat way to get links and text to your phone, look no further.

    Easily Export Your Facebook Events To Google Calendar [Chrome]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/755652287549775328.png?54167" alt="facebook events to google calendar" />The world today is becoming more and more digital, with the world becoming so reliant on the Internet that even real world things happen alongside the Web. Sites like Foursquare and Yelp exist specifically for blending the real world and the Internet world into one coherent unit. Facebook gets in the mix with their events system. I can’t even remember the last time I have been to a party that wasn’t listed as a Facebook event.

    However, what if you don’t use Facebook to keep track of your work calendar and doctor appointments? How can you merge your Facebook events and your professional events? Google has the answer, and it’s by simply importing your Facebook events to your Google calendar and having everything in one place.

    Facebook comes with a little export button at the bottom that allows you to export events, but it isn’t the smoothest process and involves copying and pasting URL’s around, and honestly who wants to do that?

    Set Up

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/install.png?54167" alt="facebook events to google calendar" width="571" height="273" />

    To get everything up and running, you first need the Google Chrome extension which you can find class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kdcimpbhnilcgolicdnepifecokinjof?hl=en-US">here. Then install the extension. After the extension is installed you will need to restart Google Chrome to have the changes take effect. Then head on over to Facebook.

    Using The Extension

    As long as you have an event in your list, click on it and go to the event screen. At the top of the screen, right below the title, you will see the link “Add to Calendar.”

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/how_to_add.png?54167" alt="export events facebook to google calendar" width="504" height="295" />

    Clicking this will automatically take you into the event creation screen on Google Calendar. If you have not set up a Calendar on your Google account before, Google will ask for some basic information such as your time zone, your name and so on.

    Once you are in the event screen you are given all the standard options such as adding other people to the event, making the event public or private, whether you would like an email notification, and even adding a map.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/screen.png?54167" alt="export events facebook to google calendar" width="489" height="558" />

    It even adds a link to the original Facebook event so you can easily jump back and forth between the original and your newly created Google event.

    Once everything has been set to your liking, and you have added a pretty color to the event, click “save” and the event will show up in your Google Calendar.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/result.png?54167" alt="facebook events to google calendar" width="265" height="266" />

    Also Check out

    Once you have merged all your Facebook events to Google Calendar you may want to check out the Google Calendar extension in the app store to work nicely along with your carefully chosen events. It allows you to keep all of your appointments close at hand, so you never miss a doctor’s appointment, or in my case, a game of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/learn-play-ultimate-frisbee-pro-5-websites">Ultimate Frisbee again.

    Conclusion

    This is an app I plan on adding to my daily life. While out of the box it is fairly easy to export events into Google Calendar, but why not have an app that makes it even easier? That is exactly what this app does. It makes adding an event as simple as a couple of mouse clicks, and it’s done; out of sight, but hopefully not out of mind.

    Quickly & Easily Manipulate HTML5′s Canvas Element With jCanvas

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_intro.jpg?54167" alt="html 5 canvas tag" />The web as we know it is evolving faster than ever before. As of late, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/html5/">HTML5 is coming into the scene, providing the capability of developing highly interactive web apps without the need for the proprietary class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/flash/">Flash. Instead, all a user needs is a supported, modern web browser, and they’ll be able to enjoy the best of what the web has to offer.

    However, creating such interactive content is never as easy as pie, and that rule doesn’t exclude class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/html-5">HTML5‘s main element that does all the work: canvas. If you’ve been following what the latest browsers have to offer, some of them may include a GPU-accelerated experience that makes the canvas element run a lot better. There are frameworks available that try to make the canvas element a little bit easier to develop for, notably class="vt-p" href="http://jquery.com/">jQuery. But even then, jQuery makes you type quite a bit. Web developers, here’s something better for you.

    About jCanvas

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_simpler.jpg?54167" alt="html 5 canvas tag" width="580" height="245" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/index.html">jCanvas is a little jQuery plugin written entirely in JavaScript that makes working with jQuery, and thereby HTML5′s canvas element, a lot easier. Web developers will get a lot of benefit out of using jCanvas. By using jCanvas, you get to work with much simpler code, in which the plugin will do the work and translate it into the relevant code for jQuery to run.

    Examples of Use

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_ellipses.jpg?54167" alt="html canvas html" width="580" height="375" />

    jCanvas can draw a large number of objects. For example, here we can see an ellipse that is filled in with a gradient. There are plenty of parameters that you can set and still keep the amount of actual code as small as possible. In this example, the gradient parameters were set first (distances, colors, etc.), followed by the drawing of the ellipse itself. For programmers, this should be a very eye-appealing way to write code with no over-the-top syntax.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_pixels.jpg?54167" alt="html canvas html" width="580" height="375" />

    In this example, a regular jpg image is being halfway inverted. The first function (or set of instructions) sets how the inversion takes place, while the second function draws the image and loads the inversion function onto it. When the code runs, you get a halfway-inverted image.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_shapes.jpg?54167" alt="html 5 canvas tag" width="580" height="379" />

    In our final example, different shapes are drawn by means of different functions provided by jCanvas. The green, unfilled rectangle was drawn by a simple function dedicated to rectangles. As always, you can customize your rectangle, even with parameters for the stroke width and corner radius (the amount that the corners should be rounded). The pentagon is drawn by a more generic function that applies to all regular polygons. You can also apply all the same parameters as with the other functions.

    The difference is important because you can draw a square with both the rectangle and polygon functions, but you can only draw rectangles with the rectangle function. (Squares are rectangles, but rectangles aren’t always squares!)

    Other Information & Support

    There’s a lot more you can do with each function, plus there are many more functions that you can use! You can download jCanvas by going class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/download.html">here. If you need any help, the full, well-written class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/docs.html#syntax">Documentation page should clarify most if not all questions. If that still doesn’t work, you can contact the developer of jCanvas by checking out his information class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/support.html">here. If you wish to try out jCanvas before playing around with it on your own site, the developer has set up a very cool-looking class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/sandbox.html#%24%28%22canvas.test%22%29%0A.drawArc%28{%0A%20%20fillStyle%3A%20%27%2389a%27%2C%0A%20%20x%3A%20100%2C%20y%3A%20100%2C%0A%20%20radius%3A%2050%0A}%29%0A">Sandbox page where you can enter code and watch the magic happen.

    Finally, if you would like to help contribute to the open source jCanvas project, you are more than welcome to do just that by going class="vt-p" href="https://github.com/caleb531/jcanvas">here. jCanvas is always being improved by the developer, and new releases are made available every few weeks.

    Conclusion

    jCanvas is a great web tool to use to make your programming experience much simpler, especially if you are a heavy user of the canvas element. Again, some of the highlight features are:

    • Draw shapes, paths, images, and text.
    • Style these using colors, gradients, patterns, and shadows.
    • Manipulate the canvas (rotate, scale, etc).
    • A huge range of options to suit your needs.

    Internet users will thank you as well for using jCanvas, because you’ll have more time to completely develop your web app and make sure that it has all the functionality you want it to have while enjoying great performance.

    Are you a web developer who is involved in HTML5? Do you think jCanvas will help you with your development? What features would you like to see in jCanvas? (please check the documentation first for what’s already implemented!).

    About jCanvas

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_simpler.jpg?54167" alt="html 5 canvas tag" width="580" height="245" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://calebevans.me/projects/jcanvas/index.html">jCanvas is a little jQuery plugin written entirely in JavaScript that makes working with jQuery, and thereby HTML5′s canvas element, a lot easier. Web developers will get a lot of benefit out of using jCanvas. By using jCanvas, you get to work with much simpler code, in which the plugin will do the work and translate it into the relevant code for jQuery to run.

    Examples of Use

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jcanvas_ellipses.jpg?54167" alt="html canvas html" width="580" height="375" />

    How To Easily Transfer Photos Between Your Facebook Albums

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Facebook300.jpg?54167" alt="" /> class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook has been around forever. At least that’s the way it sometimes feels. But it’s been around long enough for most of us to accumulate many photo albums, which can sometimes be quite chaotic. With smartphones entering our lives, uploading photos to Facebook has become a day-to-day thing, and we do so almost without thinking. So now that we’ve found easy ways to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/automatically-insert-photo-captions-upload-facebook/">upload photos and even class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-cool-facebook-apps-photos/">edit them, what happens when we find ourselves with 20 small albums that don’t necessarily make sense?

    Facebook offers a relatively easy way to transfer photos between albums, so you can get your albums organized and coherent again. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps.

    Accessing “Edit Photos”

    As to be expected from Facebook, there’s more than one way to access the “Edit Photos” section. Both are very easy, and you can choose whichever fits your personality better (for me it’s the second one).

    The Homepage Method

    If you’d like to access it from your homepage, look for “Photos” on the left side of your screen. If you don’t see it, you might need to click “More“. It will be where your requests and apps are. This will show you everybody’s photos in one place, which is also handy sometimes. In order to access only your photos, click “My Uploads“.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-26.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="459" height="293" />

    Using this method, you’ll see an “Edit Album” link below each album – click it to access the editing section of your chosen album.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-27.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="510" height="195" />

    The Profile Page Method

    If you’d like to access it from your profile page, simply look for “Photos” under your profile picture. Clicking it will take you immediately to all your albums.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Facebook2.png?54167" alt="" width="189" height="304" />

    If you’re using this method, you’ll have to first choose the album you wish to edit, click on it in order to enter it, and from there find the “Edit Album” link at the top. Click on it to enter the editing section of the album.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-28.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="552" height="207" />

    A small window will open, within which you’ll find an “Edit Photos” link at the bottom left side.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-29.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="464" height="265" />

    I sometimes wonder if Facebook’s developers really enjoy creating multiple ways to do the same thing. It might at first seem more accessible this way, but I actually find it more confusing! They could at least make the methods more similar. But anyway, both these methods will take you to the exact same place, and I can find pros and cons in each, so just go for it and choose one.

    Moving The Photos

    Now that you’re inside the guts of your album, you can choose which photos you’d like to move to different albums. The cool thing about this is you can move each photo into a different album in one fell swoop. It is surprisingly effective.

    For each photo you want to move, simply choose the right album from the “Move to:” dropdown menu which is located under each photo.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-30.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="244" height="302" />

    Once you’re done, click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page, and that’s it! All your photos should now be located within their new albums. You can see that I managed to do it, and the visitor from my room is now in a different album!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image-31.jpg?54167" alt="Image" width="368" height="210" />

    Convert Videos & Export Them To iTunes Easily With Evom [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0_evom.jpg" alt="export videos to itunes" />Anyone who is a fan of converting and watching videos on their iPad or other class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios/">iOS device will understand that this can be difficult at times. There are a lot of programs out there capable of getting the job done for you. So many, in fact, that one could argue that there are actually too many, which can make it even more confusing trying to find the right one.

    Once you do find the right tool, you still have to face the task of getting your newly converted files over to iTunes and syncing them to your devices, which can be more difficult than it sounds.

    With class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">Evom for Mac, however, this whole process is extremely easy. Evom is a lightweight video converter and transfer tool that will export converted videos directly to iTunes for you. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy…it’s high speed!

    What Is Evom?

    Evom, a product of the Little App Factory, enables you to drag-and-drop and convert videos quickly and easily. It lets you enjoy online content without being tethered to the web and, like I stated in the introduction, it was built for speed. It is designed to convert movie files and Flash videos quickly, taking advantage of your Mac’s multi-core processor, allowing you to get content off of the web and onto your favorite devices.

    With Evom, you can drag folders, individual files, or links into the program’s window to start, and your items will be converted for you and exported directly into iTunes or – optionally – saved to your desktop. Once converted, your videos will be compatible with your iPods, iPhones, iPads, and many other devices.

    How Do I Use Evom?

    Although I gave you a rough idea of how Evom works above, let’s take a closer look at the actual process from start to finish. The first thing you’ll need to do if you want to take advantage of Evom’s power is head over to the website and class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">download the app.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/1_evom.png" alt="export videos to itunes" width="291" height="403" />

    Once you’re ready to go with Evom, just drag or specify the video folder you would like to convert video from. If you leave the iTunes option selected, your videos will go straight to your iTunes folder after conversion to be synced with your iOS devices.

    When you drop video files that you want to convert, a configuration box will pop up asking you to specify the output format, as well as the output folder, title, and quality of video.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2_evom.png" alt="how to add videos to itunes" width="448" height="434" />

    If you don’t want Evom to convert videos for some specific device, you can always choose to convert video in a specific format. Evom supports the AVI, FLV, MP4, HTML5, MOV, MPG, and WMV formats. Also, you can extract audio out of a video file and convert it into OGG and MP3 format.

    As a side note, Evom is also capable of converting selected videos directly to your Apple TV in a compatible format.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3_evom.png" alt="export videos to itunes" width="289" height="402" />

    Once you’ve made all of your selections and set up class="vt-p" href="http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/">Evom just the way you want it, you can go ahead and click Convert to transform your files into watchable ones.

    4 Ways To Easily Embed Part Of A YouTube Video

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" />We have shared quite a few useful YouTube-related tips so far. Here are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-youtube-url-tricks-you-should-know-about/">10 YouTube URL tricks to play with as well as some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-common-youtube-annoyances-rid-userscripts/">YouTube annoyances and ways to get rid of them. You may also get inspired by this post listing href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tools-to-do-10-cool-things-with-youtube-videos/">10 cool things to do with a YouTube video. This post shares another quick tip: embedding only part of a YouTube video.

    While there’s really only one way to do that (the first one listed below), there are also a few well-used tools that can help you cut off a part of the video and embed it. This post is intended to shed some light on how these tools work and what they actually do.

    1. Use the Embedded Player Parameter

    The most straightforward way to embed a video while skipping the first XX seconds of it is to use the &start= parameter which works both for the “old-style” (“classic”) and iFrame player:

    Old-style player:

    <object width=”425″ height=”349″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/9_eRmA2ea8E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0;&start=38“></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/9_eRmA2ea8E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0;&start=38” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”425″ height=”349″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-01.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="450" height="125" />

    iFrame player:

    <iframe width=”425″ height=”349″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/9_eRmA2ea8E?rel=0&start=38” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Likewise, there’s also the &end= parameter that makes the video stop playing at a specified time.

    2. Chop With TubeChop

    href="http://www.tubechop.com/">TubeChop (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tubechop-chop-share-parts-youtube-vids/">review here) offers a clean interface allowing you to easily cut any part of the video out. You just need to specify the time frame to chop either using the time controls or the pink slider. The tool also lets you add your own comments to embed with the video.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-02.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos" width="550" height="355" />

    As a result, you get a new code to embed. The major drawback of using the tool is that your new embed code is based on the tubechop.com domain which might be less reliable than using the youtube-run code (I tend to think that TubeChop’s servers are much more likely to go down than YouTube’s servers which may mean that your embedded videos will be frequently inaccessible):

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-03.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="530" height="134" />

    There is also no iFrame-based alternative for the embedded code (which is believed to be more mobile-friendly).

    3. Slice With Splicd

    href="http://www.splicd.com/">Splicd (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/splicd-isolate-share-interesting-parts-youtube-videos/">review here) is another alternative online tool that lets you specify the time frame to play any YouTube video within. It also requires absolutely no extra effort (like registration or anything similar). All you need is to provide the direct link to your video page on YouTube.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-04.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos" width="550" height="126" />

    The resulting code is youtube-run and contains a link back to splicd.com (the latter can be obviously easily removed if you want):

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-05.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="526" height="203" />

    4. Snip With SnipSnip

    href="http://snipsnip.it/">SnipSnip (see our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/snipsnipit-snip-youtube-videos/">review here)  is a web-based tool that cuts a part of any video out and lets you easily share it using the shortened link:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-06.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="444" height="293" />

    The resulting code is YouTube-based and also contains a link back to the service.

    To Sum Up

    To avoid any confusion, let’s sum up what you can do with any of the above methods and how they are different:

    border="3" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="5" width="500" align="center" bordercolor="#000066">

    Easily Build & Edit Your Facebook Pages With Static HTML WYSIWYG Editor

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/00a_WYSIWYG.jpg" alt="setup facebook page" />Everybody that I know has at least one  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook account, but not many of them have set up a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-controversial-facebook-fan-pages">Facebook Page. One of the popular excuses is because building a Facebook page is difficult. It’s a pity because Facebook Pages is a great promotion tool. You can use it to promote your blog, your product, or even yourself.

    If you are a code novice and want to build and edit your Facebook pages without touching any codes, you could easily do it using href="http://apps.facebook.com/statichtml/">Static HTML – a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web editor, built specifically for Facebook Pages.

    Add The App

    Static HTML is a Facebook app that you can install by clicking href="http://apps.facebook.com/statichtml">this link. After the routine verification and confirmation process, you are ready to start building and editing your Facebook pages.

    The first thing that you need to do is register your page(s) with the Static HTML app. Pick one of the pages from the dropdown list and click “Register“. But if you don’t have any page yet, you need to create one. Please refer to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-promote-your-blog-using-facebook-pages/">this article to do that.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/01a-register-and-add.jpg" border="0" alt="setup facebook page" width="580" height="356" />

    After that, click the “Add” button, and your page will appear under the “Facebook page name” list. Click “edit” to start the editing process.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/01c_start_editing.jpg" border="0" alt="customize facebook page" width="580" height="120" />

    There are two editing mode that you can choose: WYSIWYG and HTML mode. Since our discussion today is about no-code editing, we’ll choose the first.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/02b_start_editing.jpg" border="0" alt="customize facebook page" width="580" height="220" />

    Static HTML also provides two editing panes. The first one is the main content, and the second one is the optional fan gate content. The “fan gate” is the concept of showing the main content only to those who have clicked on the “Like” button. If you want to activate a fan gate, choose the “If user have not liked, below content will be shown” option.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/02c_fan_gate_option.jpg" border="0" alt="customize facebook page" width="580" height="200" />

    We’ve discussed another method of activating the fan gate in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/promote-blog-business-facebook-wildfire-iframe-app/">this article.

    Enter The Editing Process

    Building a page using Static HTML’s WYSIWYG editor is similar to creating a document on a word processor. You write your content and modify the fonts (size, family, format, color, and background color). Standard editing features like Align, Bullets and Numbers, Bold, Italic, and Underline are also available.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04a_editing_font.jpg" border="0" alt="creating a facebook fan page" width="580" height="350" />

    You can also add images to enrich the page. There are two options to add images: hotlink to the existing images on the web, or upload your own images (hosted on ImageShack).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04b_upload_image.jpg" border="0" alt="creating a facebook fan page" width="580" height="250" />

    Those who are familiar with HTML and want to enrich certain parts of the page with HTML codes can activate HTML mode by clicking on the HTML icon.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04d_edit_html.jpg" border="0" alt="creating a facebook fan page" width="580" height="350" />

    Static HTML allows you to add a link to anything on the page. Just select the element and click on the “Add Link” button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04e_add_link.jpg" border="0" alt="04e add link" width="580" height="300" />

    Fill in all the necessary information about the link on the pop-up window and click “Submit“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04f_link_info.jpg" border="0" alt="04f link info" width="580" height="300" />

    Don’t forget to click “Update” when you have finished the editing process.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04g_update.jpg" border="0" alt="04g update" width="580" height="450" />

    Static HTML will confirm that you’ve completed the process and give you the option to “return to homepage“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/04h_complete.jpg" border="0" alt="04h complete" width="580" height="200" />

    This is the result of my short experiment using Static HTML. It’s the page that will be shown to those who haven’t clicked on the “Like” button. You can use other “incentives” to lure visitors to click the “Like” button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/07a_result.jpg" border="0" alt="07a result" width="580" height="440" />

    Tidying Up

    As you’ve noticed from the picture above, the name of the page I created is “Static HTML“. You can edit the name by clicking on the “Edit Info” link under the page name.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/08a_edit_info.jpg" border="0" alt="08a edit info" width="580" height="150" />

    Then select “Apps” from the sidebar menu.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/08b_edit_app-2.jpg" border="0" alt="08b edit app 2" width="200" height="300" />

    Locate Static HTML in the apps’ list and click the “Edit Settings” link.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/08c_edit_settings.jpg" border="0" alt="08c edit settings" width="580" height="100" />

    You can write down the name that you want for your page. Then click “Save” and “Okay” to finish the process.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/08d_change_name.jpg" border="0" alt="setup facebook page" width="450" height="200" />

    After trying out Static HTML, I can say that this app is one of the easiest ways to build and edit Facebook Pages. Granted, the tool might be too simple and not powerful enough for veteran web builders, but it’s adequate for beginners.

    How To Easily Synchronize Folders Outside Dropbox Using Symlinks

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;margin-top:5px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/00-Dropbox-Logo.jpg" width="200" height="180" alt="symlinks dropbox"/>There’s a long running discussion on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quora-share-knowledge-find-answers-toughest-questions/">Quora that grabbed my attention. The topic is about the rel="nofollow" href="http://www.quora.com/Dropbox/Why-is-Dropbox-more-popular-than-other-programs-with-similar-functionality">reason why Dropbox is more popular than other free programs with similar functionality. The various answers boiled down to this: simplicity. You put your files in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dropbox/">Dropbox folder, and that’s it. The system will take care of the rest, including synchronizing everything to the cloud and to Dropbox folders on other computers linked to that account.

    But this simplicity also means that you have to drag whatever you want to sync to the Dropbox folder. While this kind of arrangement is fine for most users, some users don’t want to re-shuffle their files and folders just for the sake of synchronizing. Luckily, there’s another possibility to synchronize folders outside Dropbox without messing up the structure of your folders: using symlinks.

    id="more-66682">

    The Symlink

    For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term “Symbolic Link” or simply “symlink”, here’s the href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symlink">Wikipedia quote:

    … In computing, a symbolic link (also symlink or soft link) is a special type of file that contains a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that affects pathname resolution ….

    … Symbolic links operate transparently for most operations: programs which read or write to files named by a symbolic link will behave as if operating directly on the target file. However, programs that need to handle symbolic links specially (e.g., backup utilities) may identify and manipulate them directly …

    Using symlinks to synchronize folders outside Dropbox is very easy. Create a symlink of the folder and put the symlink inside the Dropbox folder. Any change which happens to the symlink will be reflected on the original folder and vice versa. Symlink allows you to synchronize any folder that you want to Dropbox while having to move anything,

    The question is, how do you create a symlink?

    The Windows Method

    The easiest way to create a symlink under Windows is to use an application called href="http://wiki.dropbox.com/DropboxAddons/DropboxFolderSync">Dropbox Folder Sync. There’s one caveat though, the app will only work if the disk is formatted with NTFS as other Windows’ disk formats don’t support symlinks.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/01a_DFS_Install.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox" width="531" height="384" />

    • After the installation process is done, the app will ask you to set the location of your Dropbox folder.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02a_Set_Dropbox_Folder.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox folder" width="242" height="145" />

    • You can do that by clicking the “Change Setting” option on the main interface.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02b_Change_Settings.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox folder" width="336" height="263" />

    • Then browse to the location of the Dropbox folder.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/02c_The_Chosen_Folder.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox folder" width="324" height="331" />

    • Then including any folder to the Dropbox folder will only be a matter of right-clicking the folder and choosing “Sync with Dropbox“. Then the “UnSync with Dropbox” command can be used to exclude it.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/03a_Sync_With_Dropbox.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox windows" width="500" height="100" />

    The Mac Method

    There are several options that you can use to create symlinks on the Mac, including doing it manually with the help of Terminal and command lines. But the easiest method is by utilizing a simple app called href="http://wiki.dropbox.com/DropboxAddons/MacDropAny">MacDropAny.

    • Every time you run the application, it will ask you to choose which folder you want to sync via Dropbox. Browse to the location of the folder and/or create a new one.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/04a-Create-New-Folder.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox windows" width="535" height="400" />

    • Now choose where in the Dropbox folder you want to put the symlink. If you are an organization freak, you could create a new folder called ‘External Folders‘ or something similar, and put all the symlinks there.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/04b-Where-in-Dropbox.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox windows" width="535" height="400" />

    • The last step is to give a name to the link. To avoid confusion, it’s better for you to name it something similar to the original folder.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/04c-Name-The-Link.jpg" border="0" alt="symlinks dropbox" width="360" height="149" />

    Best Of Both Worlds

    There are other apps that will let you sync any folder on your computer to the cloud. But those apps require some complicated settings. By using symlinks to help you sync folders outside Dropbox, you get the best of both worlds: the simplicity of Dropbox, and the power of more advanced apps.

    Do you synchronize folders outside Dropbox? Have you tried one of the apps that we discussed today? Or do you have another solution to achieve the same goal? Share your thoughts and opinions using the comments below. />

    Linux Live USB Creator: Easily Boot Linux From Your Flash Drive

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/LogoText.png" alt="linux boot from usb" width="300" height="101" />Trying out Linux should be easy; with the help of Linux Live USB Creator it is. Quickly get any Linux distribution to boot from your USB key, complete with a persistent mode for keeping applications and documents in place. You can even install a portable version of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/virtualbox/">Virtualbox to your USB key so you can run Linux comfortably from within Windows.

    With support for a shockingly high number of Linux distributions and an easy-to-use Windows interface, Linux Live USB Creator makes the creation of USB boot disks effortless. From downloading the ISO to formatting your drive, there’s not much about USB booting this application doesn’t make easier than similar software.

    id="more-65110"> /> Feel free to href="http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/home">download Linux Live USB right now, and keep reading for an overview of the program.

    5 Simple Steps

    First things first: fire up the program. You’ll see 5 sub-windows, representing the five steps to making a Live USB key. The first is simple enough:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-1key1.png" alt="linux boot from usb" width="580" height="244" />

    That’s right: you need to pick which key you want to boot Linux from. Once you’ve done this, pick the version of Linux you want to boot. If you’ve got an ISO or a CD handy you can use that, or you can pick from many downloadable distros:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-2source.png" alt="linux boot disk" width="579" height="176" />

    If you select a distro from this list the program will take care of downloading the ISO for you:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-download.png" alt="linux boot disk" width="580" height="148" />

    So far, so good. If you want your key to keep downloaded programs and documents in place, you’re going to want persistence mode. This is step 3; simply scroll to leave room:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-3persistence.png" alt="linux boot disk" width="577" height="123" />

    Step four is optional, but includes some handy tools:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-4options.png" alt="usb linux boot jump drive" width="577" height="115" />

    Here you can choose to hide the created files on your key from being seen by Windows, useful if you plan to use your key for more than just booting Linux. You can optionally format the drive you’re writing to, and choose whether or not you want your Linux distro to be loadable in Windows.

    Once you’re done you can click the lightning bolt in the fifth box to start the creation of your live CD. Congratulations; you’ve got yourself a bootable USB key.

    Live Virtual Machine

    The options include a step for launching your key in Windows. What is that about? Well, once your disk is created, open it up in Windows Explorer. You’ll find a new file that looks like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lili-virtual.png" alt="linux boot from usb" width="170" height="189" />

    You can click this to boot your Linux distro without rebooting Windows, which is handy from time to time. Naturally you’re going to want a pretty powerful computer to try this out, but it’s a nice added touch.

    Supported Distros

    Wow. Just, wow. This program supports the automatic downloading and installation of many different Linux distributions. Highlights include:

    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ubuntu/">Ubuntu and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/versions-ubuntu-technology-explained/">Ubuntu’s many versions.
    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gparted-ultimate-partitioning-software/">The GParted Live CD

    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/xpud-quick-booting-easy-64-mb-linux-distro-linux/">xPud
    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-advanced-hard-drive-cloning-solution-from-clonezilla/">Clonezilla

    There’s more; check out href="http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/supported-linuxes">Live Linux USB’s official list of Linux distros for a complete list.

    Conclusion

    Linux Live USB isn’t the first program to help users make live USB keys; href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-linux-with-ease-using-unetbootin/">uNetBootin does the same job. What Linux Live USB does better than this program is make the process painless. It’s worth checking out just for that, but href="http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/02/lili-for-windows-the-easiest-way-to-try-linux/">according to blog OMG Ubuntu, this program works more consistently than others. So it’s easier and better.

    2 Ways To Easily Navigate Through (Long) Articles In FireFox

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings.jpg" alt="navigate web page"/>The Internet and the href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/search-engine">search engines made it so easy to find plenty of information about anyone or anything. In fact we can now find and go through so much content that we barely have time to read. We rather scan through the articles to get the main idea or to get to the place which is really important to us.

    Today’s post will make the task of “scanning” webpage content easier, smarter and more efficient: both the addons listed here create a short outline of the current page and let you quickly jump to the part of the page that seems to be most relevant.

    id="more-64439">

    Navigate the Page Using Subheadings

    href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/headingsmap/">HeadingsMap is a handy FireFox addon that generates the page map based on its headings and subheadings.

    Headings and subheadings are the elements of the page marked-up using <h1> – <h6> tags. Website content creators use the tags to structure the page based on topics and subtopics. Here’s an easy way to describe what page headings are about:

    Back in school when you were taught how to write papers, you had your main idea with the main heading (H1) and then supporting facts with subheadings (H2) and often those supporting facts had their own supporting facts (H3).

    Website content creators are guided by the same principle when creating a web page content – therefore extracting those subheadings is a great way to generate the outline of the current article. The HeadingsMap addon makes this outline and it also makes it clickable.

    The heading map is triggered in the sidebar once you click the <h/> icon in the status bar:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-02.jpg" alt="navigate web page" width="150" height="92" />

    Here’s the heading map of one of the recent MUO articles, for example:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-01.jpg" alt="firefox navigate" width="550" height="266" />

    Notice that the addon highlights the places where the structure is somewhat broken: in our case, that’s h4 tag coming above h3 tag.

    Notice also that it brings you to the subheading on the page and highlights it in yellow once you click it in the heading map.

    Note: website owners are not always really consistent when it comes to using the h1-h6 tags, so the outline won’t always be correct (but it will still represent the contests of the page):

    • Some subheadings get omitted and missed;
    • Some elements of the page are marked-up with h1-h3 tags for “search engines” (as these are believed to be good places to put your keywords).

    Navigate the Page Using the Tag Cloud

    While the above addon relies on website owners and how they use the heading tags, this tool uses its own built-in algorithm to do the text analysis of any page and to generate a href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/tag-cloud">tag cloud representing its most frequent words and pages.

    Once you have the addon installed, use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+U to generate a tag cloud for the current web page (Note: the same shortcut generates the tag cloud for a part of the page as well: just select the area you want the tag cloud for and use the shortcut – this is very handy when you, for example, want to omit readers’ comments, navigation, etc).

    Here’s a tag cloud for the exact same MUO article:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-03.jpg" alt="firefox navigate" width="550" height="346" />

    Now just click any tag that you want more context for and you’ll be taken to its first occurrence on the web page; click again and you’ll be taken to its next occurrence (the type of behavior you have with the addons that allow to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-tools-highlight-google-search-terms-target-page/\">highlight Google search terms on the target page):

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/navigate-page-headings-04.jpg" alt="navigate web page" width="550" height="249" />

    Are there any other addons that offer some alternative and interesting ways to navigate the current page? Please share them in the comments! />

    4 Sites for Groups to Easily Share Photos from One Event

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/album.jpg" alt="how to share photos" />As the pro-democracy protests throughout Egypt held the world captive, a flood of photos has been coming in from photojournalists and activists. The photos were posted through various online services from href="http://flickr.com">Flickr to href="http://twitpic.com">Twitpic to href="http://facebook.com">Facebook. Unless you knew who to follow on Twitter, it was impossible to take in all of the incredible images coming in of protests throughout the country.

    There are various free services that aim to make the sharing of these kinds of photos much easier. These services offer a few methods to funnel images into one location. Whether you want to know how to share photos from one event with a small group of friends, or are trying to find a way to collect a treasure of photos that document a significant moment in world history, here are a few ways to do just that.

    id="more-64968">

    DropEvent

    Getting started with href="http://www.dropevent.com/">DropEvent, you can create your event and determine whether you want to approve photos before they are added, and if adding photos is invite only or open to the general public.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/DropEvent1.png" border="0" alt="how to share event photos" width="510" height="570" />

    You can then add photos yourself uploading them from the website. There is also an email feature, allowing to send in photos from your mobile phone, but in our experience it wasn’t successful.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/DropEvent2.png" border="0" alt="share photos online free" width="337" height="325" />

    Invite friends to contribute to the album via an email invitation, and they can then add photos using the same methods. To add photos, they don’t have to sign up, but will have to provide their email address, but it won’t be displayed with the image.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/DropEvent3.png" border="0" alt="share photos online free" width="402" height="429" />

    DropEvent’s simple upload interface is easy to use, but the display of photos can come across as a little clunky. It would also be nice to be able to identify (or choose to identify) who uploaded a photo especially for groups of friends. It’s also worth noting that the DropEvent invitation ended up in the Spam folder in Gmail.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/DropEvent4.jpg" border="0" alt="share photos online with group" width="580" height="645" />

    Yogile

    We’ve covered href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/yogile-alternative-flickr-collaborative-twist/">Yogile before and while the photo layout will appeal to the more artistic photographer, free accounts are limited to only 100 MB per month.

    Like on DropEvent, you can choose whether or not to approve photos before they are added. Images are added by you or other users through the web interface. Just share the email address or album URL with friends and they can access it instantly.

    If they opt not to sign up for a Yogile account, your friends can still add photos, but the drawback is, of course, that photos uploaded without logging in are not attributed to anyone.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Yogile.png" border="0" alt="free share photos" width="512" height="520" />

    We love Yogile’s simple approach and minimalist layout, but the 100 MB limit puts it out of the running for collecting events on a very large scale, so is better suited for small groups of friends.

    Picasa

    href="https://picasaweb.google.com/">Picasa is another ideal choice for creating group albums for any given event or concept whether on a small or large scale. The advantage to using Picasa is that it’s a popular service that many people use anyway, so you won’t have to convince them to use another service.

    When creating the album be sure you create a public album, or one that you can share with friends by sending them the link.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Picasa1.png" border="0" alt="free share photos" width="580" height="337" />

    After sharing the album by sending an email invitation, you can then decide which of your friends can add photos to the album. The catch with Picasa is that they have to have a google account, and that you have to manually toggle the upload icon next to each person’s name on the right hand side of the album. It would be nice to be able to have a universal toggle button for all friends.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Picasa2.png" border="0" alt="free share photos" width="299" height="124" />

    Each Picasa album is limited to 1,000 photos and your entire storage on Picasa is limited to 1 GB.

    Flickr Groups

    Of course href="http://www.flickr.com/">Flickr does offer a similar concept through their groups feature. href="http://www.flickr.com/groups_create.gne">Flickr Groups are probably the ideal method for someone looking for a free way to amass as many photos from one event in one place, without any limit on the number of photos themselves.

    style="text-align: center;"> src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/FlickrGroups.jpg" border="0" alt="how to share photos" width="580" height="390" />

    At the same time, if you would rather use Flickr for a private or invitation only album of photos, these options are available when creating a group.

    Do you have any tips on how to share photos amongst one group? Let us know in the comments.
