Last week, our MakeUseOf poll asked you if you share passwords with your spouse. I was quite surprised to note that most of you do share passwords of some sort. I had thought that with so many geeks as readers we would have had far tighter security – even when committed partners are concerned. But, apparently that’s not the case. We’re generally quite a trusting bunch!

Not everyone was quite so trusting though – 29% of voters don’t share passwords at all. But this was definitely the minority, with most voters sharing at least some of their passwords with their partner. A staggering 33% of voters share all of their passwords: banking, social networks, email – everything. 26% of you are quite happy to share passwords for household stuff like banking. Overall, out of a total of 414 voters, a whopping 71% of MakeUseOf readers are happy to share some of their passwords with their spouse. Very trusting!

To all of you out there sharing passwords with your spouse, I truly hope that your trust isn’t misplaced and that your spouse is both careful and trustworthy. Also, for those of you sharing online banking details, I can honestly say from the bank’s point of view that you really shouldn’t be doing this. If it’s a joint account, it’s recommended that you both get your own online banking login.

IrfanView is a compact graphic viewer for Windows. It’s small, fast, and offers an incredible amount of features. Best of all, it’s freeware.

Per default, IrfanView comes with some basic features, including multi-language support, a large number of supported file formats, paint options, slideshow capability, batch conversion, and a lot more. The application can be enhanced further by installing a myriad of IranView plugins.

To help you get an idea what is available and make a decision which ones you really need, I’m reviewing some of the coolest IranView plugins.

IrfanView Plugins come in five different packages: a media, a formats, an effects, a misc, and a full plugin collection. In addition, there are plugins that are not yet part of any of the packages.

The packages are .zip archives and each plugin can be installed separately. The installation procedure is described in the included readme text file. The full package is also available as self-installing .exe file.

1. SLIDESHOW: Save Slideshows As An .exe or .scr file

As mentioned above, IrfanView has the capability to show slideshows of your pictures. To set up a slideshow, go to > File > Slideshow and set up your show. Per default, you can save the file names to a .txt file and re-load it to show the same slideshow again. With the slideshow plugin, you can also save your show as .exe or .scr, which will preserve all your settings.

This plugin is part of the media collection. If you would also like to burn your slideshows to a CD, get the BURNING plugin from the same plugins collection.

2. EXIF: View Exif Data From JPGs

Exchangeable Image File Format (Exif) data provide information about the camera settings used to take the respective picture. The EXIF plugin makes this information viewable for JPG images. When the plugin is installed, go to > Image > Information and click the > EXIF info* button.

This plugin is part of the misc collection.

3. FILTERS_UNLIMITED: Use Filters Unlimited plugins From PhotoShop

If you’re using PhotoShop, you can use its Filters Unlimited plugins in IrfanView with the help of this plugin. Naturally, you will need a copy of Filters Unlimited itself. The IrfanView plugin is merely an interface.

When everything was installed correctly, you can go to > Image > Effects > Filters Unlimited to start using the respective filters.

This plugin is part of the effects collection. A similar plugin is FILTER_FACTORY.

4. MPG: Extract Frames From MPEG Files

Using this plugin, you can extract a set of frames from .mpeg movies. The images will be saved as .bmp files.

This plugin is part of the formats collection.

5. FORMATS: Extend Support For Rare Image Formats

Quickly get additional file type support and view all files with these extensions in IrfanView: PSP, G3, RAS, IFF/LBM, BioRAD, Mosaic, XBM, XPM, GEM-IMG, SGI, RLE, WBMP, TTF, FITS, PIC, HDR, MAG, WAD, WAL, DNG, EEF, NEF, ORF, RAF, MRW, DCR, SRF/ARW, PEF, X3F, CAM, SFW, YUV, PVR, SIF.

This plugin is pat of the formats collection.

Some other IranView plugins from that collection should also be noted. There is QUICKTIME which obviously adds support for Quicktime files, then there is another that allows you to play MP3 files in IrfanView, and finally you can also watch Flash movies in IrfanView, if the respective plugin is installed.

6. OCR_KADMOS: Adds OCR Features

OCR_Kadmos is an optical character recognition (OCR) component for IrfanView. It will recognize and extract text from loaded images. Load an image that contains text, then go to > Options > Start OCR… (Plugin). The software window opens. Select the type of text and language, then select the text you wish to see recognized with the mouse. The recognized characters will appear in a window in the bottom left.

This plugin is not yet part of a package mentioned above. For now you have to download and install it separately.

If you blog, you’ll understand perfectly that writing using a web editor – like blogging – is totally different from writing using an ordinary word processor, like what most people do at work. Even though today’s blogging platforms have already provided users with a visual editor and regular people without extensive HTML knowledge can write content for the web easily, the default editing features are limited. A blogging platform’s built-in editor has far less features than the simplest desktop text editor.

Meet CKEditor (previously known as FCKEditor), the web-based WYSIWYG text editor which promises to bring common editing features found on desktop editing applications like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice to the web. And for WordPress users, the power of CKEditor is brought to the WP editor in the form of Dean’s FCKEditor for WordPress plugin.

Activating The Advanced CKEditor WordPress Plugin

Just like any other WordPress plugins, you can easily install the FCKEditor via the WordPress Plugins menu. All you have to do is click the “Add New” button, enter ‘FCKEditor’ into the search field, and click the “Install Now” link from the search result.

After the installation process is done, activate the plugin by clicking the “Activate Plugin” link.

And what exactly will happen by activating the plugin? To give you a better picture, let’s compare the look of WordPress editor with and without FCKEditor. This is the default editor:

And below, the CKEditor WordPress editor plugin is integrated into the blogging platform. The WordPress editor is transformed into a full-featured word processor with advanced editing features that you won’t find in the original editor.

But the transformation is not limited to the blogging editor but also in the comment section of the blog posts. Armed with this ability, visitors can leave more than just simple plain text comments.

Getting Familiar With The Editor

For those who might feel a little bit overwhelmed by all of the colorful buttons and want a distraction-free writing environment, you can hide those buttons by clicking the small arrow button at the right corner of the writing area.

And for those hardcore web coders who can’t sleep well before a little dose of “a href”s or “div style”s (you know who you are), you can still access the HTML editor by clicking on the “Source” button – the first button on the top left corner of the editor.

There’s also the “Smileys” button that will give you a bunch of smileys that you can insert into your writing.

Surely, there are tons of other features that you get from FCKEditor such as the ability to change the font color on the fly, create subscripts and superscripts, insert flash elements, change font type, size, style, and more. If you want to know which button is related to which feature, just hover your mouse pointer above one of the buttons and FCKEditor will gladly tell you.

Messing With The Settings

If you want to dig a little bit deeper into FCKEditor, you can go to “Settings – FCKEditor” menu from the WordPress sidebar.

Inside, you will find several options that you can ‘tweak’, such as the skin and built-in spell checker from the “Common Options“.

Or the height of the editor and the ability to choose which buttons should appear on the editor’s toolbar from “Post/Page Editor options“. If you use several buttons regularly and never touch the others, you can delete the unused buttons simply by deleting their names from the “Set the toolbar buttons” field.

The similar thing goes for “Comment Editor Options“. You can activate/deactivate FCKEditor for the blog comment section, set the editor’s height, and decide which buttons should appear in the comment editor.

The last option is “Upload Options” where you can define what kind of files are allowed to be uploaded to the blog. The ability to define accepted file extensions opens up some other possibilities, such as using the blog server’s storage as an “emergency” file storage.

Please remember to click the “Update Options” button after your modification to save all the changes.

Desktop Word Processor On Your Blog

Using FCKEditor plugin for WordPress is like doing blogging via a desktop word processor that you use everyday. Having the familiar look and functionalities can surely help you boost your productivity while blogging (not to mention having an alternative online word processor that you can use anytime and anywhere as long as you have access to internet).

Organizing Your MP3s and Editing Your ID3 Tags Manually?

Nothing is more annoying then going through your music archive and seeing “Track 01″, “Unknown Artist”, or “Unknown Album.” If you have a basic Internet connection this problem can usually be solve by utilizing your “Update Info” or similar media player’s information gathering method. This gathers information on songs from an extensive online database. Yet, this doesn’t always solve the the issue, leaving some MP3s without media information (i.e. burned CD’s, indie artist, etc). There are a few simple methods for updating these files ID3 tags manually. The updating method may vary depending on the media player you are using.

1) Open your preferred media player, and locate the files you want to update.

2) For updating files in iTunes: After locating the file right-click the file and select “Get Info” from the menu.

For updating in Windows Media Player: After locating the file right-click on the section you want to update and select “Rename” from the menu.

3) iTunes: After selecting “Get Info” a dialog box will open with multiple blanks. Fill-in the corresponding information with the blank titles. After filling in the first page switch between the tabs at the top to fill in optional information, such as website, artwork, etc.

Windows Media Player: After selecting “Rename” type in the corrected information in the text field.

4) iTunes: After filling in the blanks click on the “OK” button in the bottom corner to save changes.

Windows Media Player: Once you’ve filled in the information for a section click anywhere off that text field to close it. Do this for each section you want to edit.

To edit multiple MP3s select all the files that need to be corrected and follow the same steps. These methods utilize the most common two media players for editing ID3 tags and organizing MP3s. The method for editing and organizing will be different depending on the media player, but most will utilize some variation of these methods. There are also many programs that will aide in updating and organizing. These programs will automatically update files that the “Update Info” engine built into the media player may not recognize.

Automatic Tag Mp3 Editor

One of these programs is TuneUp. The TuneUp program comes with multiple features that make updating the meta-data and cover art easier, and also attaches to the side of iTunes allowing for simple drag and drop from the iTunes library. The feature Clean listens to the MP3 and checks it with an existing database allowing even more accurate updating, and also allowing to decide if the updated information is the correct before applying it to the ID3 tag of the MP3. Another feature is Cover Art. This feature checks the ID3 tags of files and searches for the cover art of the file. Searching a database this feature provides multiple choices for cover art to allot for increased accuracy.

These features are great for updating the meta-data of the MP3, but programs like this also come with additional features that may not necessarily relate to updating ID3 tags and organizing MP3s, but are helpful and relatively related. One such feature is Tuniverse. This takes the currently playing MP3 and displays artist biographies, related artist, related music videos, and merchandise opportunities based on the playing MP3. Another feature is the Concerts feature that tracks the upcoming shows of all the artist in your media library, and also allowing for one-click ticket purchase of the same concerts.

TuneUp is available for download from the Internet either for a free downgraded version, or a fee for the full version. The difference between the free version and the paid version is modest. The free version allowing only a select number of MP3s sent through Clean or album covers retrieved from Cover Art, as opposed to the unlimited uses from the paid versions. The free version does allow for unlimited use of Tuniverse and Concerts, though. Yet, for $29.95 for a lifetime usage of the program, the paid versions assets far outweigh those of the free version’s.

Programs like TuneUp aide greatly in the organization of MP3s, keeping from sifting through endless files and updating each manually, which can eat up hours of time depending on the amount of MP3 files that you keep on your hard drive.

YouTube has had ways to editor your video for some time now, but it would probably be a stretch to call those features an actual video editor. They were more of a supplement, making it possible to add annotation and other notes to your video. If you needed to cut or change your video you had to use your own video editor, such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.

Now, that has changed. YouTube has released the first version of the YouTube Video Editor. This editor honestly doesn’t have a huge amount of functionality, but it does let you accomplish a few things which you couldn’t previously accomplish on YouTube.

Cropping Videos

Cropping a video is one of the most basic and most often used features of any video editing software. Chances are that if you’re looking to publish on YouTube, you aren’t aiming to reach Hollywood level quality. You just need to make sure that you edit out the parts of the video which make you look dumb.

To crop a video, the first thing you need to do is drag and drop the video you want to edit into the video editing section, which is represented by a video icon.

Now you need to hover your cursor over the thumbnail of your video in the edit section. A scissor icon will appear over the thumbnail. Click on that, and you’ll open the edit view. In order to crop the clip, you need to click on either of the white bars to the left or right of the timeline, then drag the bar over. This will highlight part of your video clip’s timeline in white. The white part of the clip is what is being cropped out.

Click on Save. This will save your edit in the YouTube video editor, but won’t save it to YouTube. To do that, you need to click on the Publish button in the upper right hand corner of the editor. Before you do that, though, be sure to give your edited video a name!

Splicing Videos

Splicing two videos together is extremely easy with the YouTube Video Editor. Just drag and drop the thumbnails of both videos into the edit section, then publish the video.

That is literally all you have to do. Just keep in mind that YouTube Video Length limits still apply. You may need to crop out part of a video and then place it into a seperate YouTube video.

Adding and Editing Audio

Adding audio has become a popular feature in YouTube. It makes it easy to add a sort of theme song to your video clips. This is very useful if you have a clip where the sound isn’t really applicable to what is happening on the video, or the sound is simply unintelligible. Better to have your viewers listening to music than a much of gobbly-gook, right?

The YouTube Video Editor includes an Audioswap library search function which lets you browse through the entire Audioswap library on YouTube. This can be accessed by opening the Audio tab of the YouTube Video Editor.

You browse by Genre and Artist or you can try and find your favorite artist by using the search function. Audioswap is still a fairly limited library, but there is usually an appropriate track available. Once you’ve found the track that you want to use you can choose it by either clicking the plus icon at the right or by dragging and dropping the track from the Audio tab to the audio edit section at the bottom of the YouTube Video Editor.

That’s It, For Now

These basic functions are all that the YouTube Video Editor can handle, at least for now. Their inclusion is very useful, as it helps chop up videos into sizes which are YouTube friendly and also makes the addition of audio quicker and easier. Hopefully the functionality of the YouTube Video Editor will only be expanded with time.
