This week I will be talking about Pokemon, and why the Pokemon games are not just child’s play.

People tend to think of Pokemon as being just for kids, but as I have mentioned in a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/master-pokemon-trainer-3-websites/">previous article about Pokemon websites, I respectfully disagree. I started playing Pokemon when the first handheld games came out for the original GameBoy. I remember it being one of the very first video games that I sunk hundreds of hours into, and I remember loving every second of it.

Flash forward to today, and I am 24 years old. Pokemon Black and White have come to market recently, and while the changes to the games have been incremental, I still find myself with over 100 hours in play time in the new ones. There is not a single other video game franchise that I have come back to as much as Pokemon.

The Difficulty Of The Game

style="margin-right: 20px; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Pokemon-Black-Version-DS-_.jpg" alt="pokemon games" width="256" height="192" align="left" />Pokemon has always been able to strike the perfect balance to be easy enough for a child to play, and yet deep and challenging enough for an adult such as myself to enjoy. Right from the introduction of the game, it is geared to teach you how to play, while actually letting you play at the same time.

The very early stages of the games consist of easy battles designed to get you used to the way the game plays, but as the game progresses the battles start to get more and more challenging. Kids can have fun running around the world and collecting Pokemon and even if the very end of the game is too challenging for them it does not matter, because they will be having so much fun playing either way.

The Hidden Depth

There is a dirty secret underground world to Pokemon that most players will never even bother to explore. This is the competitive Pokemon scene. In this world the game is not as simple as collecting Pokemon and fighting your way to the elite four. They are worried about what kind of battles their Pokemon participate in so they can properly level them up a certain way through EVs. When I was a little kid I had no idea that any of this existed, and that is the beauty of the system; you do not need to explore any of this to have fun, but if you are looking for a deeper experience, then the option is there.

Value

Pokemon games are long. It is easy to invest well over 100 hours in a Pokemon game, and considering they cost half as much as a new game for Xbox 360 or PS3, this is a great value proposition. This is of course if you buy the newest Pokemon game. If you play the older ones you can easily href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/desmume-a-free-nintendo-ds-emulator-to-play-nds-games-on-your-pc-nb/">emulate them for free, or buy a used copy for next to nothing. Any game that you can get many hours of enjoyment out of for extremely cheap is right up my alley, and Pokemon fits the bill perfectly.

Portability

Who doesn’t love being able to take something they enjoy with them everywhere they go? Well since every major Pokemon release has been on a portable Nintendo platform, that is not an issue. Pokemon is perfectly made for a portable system because it is the kind of game you can pick up and play for short bursts, or sit and play for hours on end. Either way, you will feel satisfied with your experience.

Just Downright Fun

All of these others reasons are great, but the most important reason is that Pokemon is just a fun game. I don’t care if you are 12 or 60, Pokemon has something fun in it for you. You like exploring? Check. You like interesting stories? Has that too. How about collecting? No worries. Oh you like fighting? Well that’s in there too. Pretty much every important thing that makes a game fun is in Pokemon.

Conclusion

If you haven’t played a Pokemon game since you were a child, I recommend swallowing your pride and going back and playing one again. I can promise you that you will enjoy it. Even if you just put a couple of hours into one of the games for nostalgia’s sake, you will not regret it.

Whether you want to download songs from anywhere, view lyrics for currently playing songs, scrobble your songs to Last.FM or just remove the stripes from the interface, userscripts from around the web have you covered.

The new class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-music-puts-tunes-online/">Google Music Beta puts your tunes online, meaning you can stream them from any web browser. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/greasemonkey/">Greasemonkey allows creative hackers to add new features to online services. So it’s only natural that there are already some great userscripts out there for Google Music. I’ve found four and compiled them below. All of them work on Firefox with Greasemonkey; Chrome users can install these scripts too, but results will vary.

It’s perhaps the first question I hear when I explain Google Music – can I download songs from it? Officially, the answer is no. Unofficially, yes. A script makes this possible. Once you’ve installed this script, and start playing a song, you’ll see a down arrow to the left of the other buttons:

Don’t see it? Refresh your Google music page; it will show up. Press the button to start the download:

As you can see, the currently playing track can be downloaded. The file will be called “stream.mp3″, but you’ll find that the ID3 tag is still in place. This would be a stressful way to move a large quantity around but works wonderfully with individual tracks.

Whether you listen to music from languages you don’t speak natively or you just never got the hang of comprehending Bob Dylan, sometimes lyrics can be helpful. Google Music doesn’t come with lyric support, but there’s a script for the job:

Using this one couldn’t be easier; simply install the userscript and lyrics will start showing up every time you open a song. This one does take up some screen real estate, so netbook users might not like it, but it does what it says on the box.

Are you a fan of both class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/lastfm/">Last.FM and Google Music? Good news – you can now “scrobble” songs played on Google Music. A simple script does the job, and does it well. Install the script and you’ll see this option:

Click it, sign in with your account and you’ll be able to continue recording which songs you like best.

Remove The Stripes From Google Music

This one’s probably less “useful” than the others, but it’s worth pointing out. Google Music looks completely different than other Google services, sporting a orange and grey colour scheme and a lot of diagonal stripes. If you don’t dig the stripes however, you can remove them.

Conclusion

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/firefox-find.jpg" alt="firefox findbar"/>The ability to quickly scroll down to any word on a page is enormously helpful: I for one use FireFox Findbar almost every time I land on a page from search results to quickly find my search terms (something that also can be automated with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-tools-highlight-google-search-terms-target-page/">term highlighting tools). And yes, I so miss the feature when I happen to read “real” books!

While the option in itself is awesome, there’s always some room for improvements. This post lists 3 tools that will let you have even more fun with FireFox CTRL+F command: (1) visualize search term occurrence in the scrollbar; (2) create the page summary and (3) find “similar” words while controlling the proximity). Enjoy!

1. Scrollbar Search Highlighter

href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/scrollbar-search-highlighter/">Scrollbar Search Highlighter imitates default Google Chrome behavior: it visualizes all instances of the word you are searching on the current page. It works in conjunction with “Highlight All” feature that causes all the matches to be highlighted on the page – with this addon enabled, the matches are additionally highlighted in a small bar alongside the scrollbar:

Unfortunately, unlike Chrome default feature, this addon doesn’t scroll down to the term occurrence if you click a tiny color mark in the scroll bar.

The options allow you to set the color and hide the highlights after you close the Findbar:

2. Find All

href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/find-all/">Find All is another addon to easier find the term instances on a page. In essence, it creates the summary of the page text containing all your search term together with its immediate context:

• A new button “Find all” is added to your Findbar (it can optionally substitute “Highlight all” button)
• When clicked, a new field appears with your search term occurrences and its context in plain text;
• Clicking the rows will scroll the actual page up / down to the term occurrence on the page.

The addon options let you:

• Change the font size of the results list;
• Change the background color of rows in results list;
• Select matches on the page instead of highlighting them.

You are also able to show the “Highlight all” button (which is hidden by default) together with “Find All” one:

3. Smart Find

href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/smart-find/">Smart Find is a bit different addon. It lets you find a word occurrence even if you have slightly misspelled the word (or just can’t remember how to spell a complex word):

• Just have it installed and notice a new “Similar” option added to your Findbar;
• Whenever that option is checked, you’ll be able to find “Similar” term occurrences on the current page;
• The misspelled word will first be marked as red (“un-found”), but clicking up / down arrows (or using CTRL+G or ENTER keyboard shortcuts), will switch between “similar” terms:

You can also set the similarity level in Edit -> Find Similar Level -> Low/Medium/High (which is supposed to set how similar the term should be to be found). However I haven’t noticed considerably different behavior when switching between similarity levels:

Google Docs has been by far one of the more useful offerings from Google in my life.  Sure, Gmail is a close second because I do use it every day.  However, since there are other worthy alternatives to using Gmail for my email, Google Docs will have to be my pick.

One of the major reasons why Google Docs is useful to me is because of the amazing collaborative features it has.  Being able to work together on spreadsheets and documents has been imperative in the past few years.

That being said, web-based word processing has had its downfalls (check out the debate).  One of the downfalls is Google’s ability to render documents correctly.  Let this article serve to prove that Google is working on the issues and hopefully someday online word processing can possibly replace the old school offline way of doing things.  In its newest release, Google Docs has worked on four areas that makes it even better than before.

Real Time Collaboration

Like I mentioned earlier, one of the Google Docs features I love is that I have the ability to collaborate with other editors.  Now Google has improved this to the point of real time collaboration.  This means that I can be working on a document or spreadsheet at the same time as another editor and we can actually see changes as they take place.

Notice in the screenshot how there is a block highlighted in a color and how a name pops up.This tells me that a change is taking place at that exact moment.

Chat With Other Collaborators

This Google Docs feature goes right along with real time collaboration.  When Google acquired EtherPad (read more about it), perhaps they put them to work on Google Docs instead of Google Wave.  Either way, I see this as a great improvement to Google Docs; a move that makes a lot of sense.

Now when you have another editor working on the same document, the name shows up at the top right side of the screen.  Clicking on the name will drop down an EtherPad-type chat sidebar.  Looks familiar, right?  Very cool though.

Higher-Quality Imports

In the past, importing documents created by offline word processors to be edited via Google Docs usually turned up some wonky formatting issues.  If it is true that they are improving the import abilities, I am all for it.  This is one area I see as holding me back from going all out using just web based word processing.  Google, never stop improving in this area.  We want to see the exact document that we uploaded, please.

Ruler

Last but not least, Google Docs has added a ruler at the top of the documents editor.  Word processors for years have had this feature.  Why it’s only now becoming available in Google Docs, I’m not sure.  However, having it finally here is a blessing.

As you can see, we can now more easily format our documents.  A quick glance at the ruler, and perhaps a few quick adjustments, and we are on our way to a more better formatted word processing life.

Why is it that small businesses rarely consider document scanning and management. Even those who produce half a dozen invoices or despatch notes daiily can gain access to a competitive edge by adopting DM as a company policy

1. Viewing documents at the PC without the need to visit the filing cabinet.

2. It is virtually impossible to lose or misfile documents with an electronic document scanning system, something which cannot be said of physical filing.

3. Security of sensitive documents e.g. HR files, can be limited to “need to know” basis only by issueing passwords to the relevant parties.

4. You do NOT need to show Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs the originals of any documents. They are quite happy to view electronic copies.

5. The ability for multiple users to view documents at the same time. e.g. sharing access to electronically scanned invoices with your accountant or bookkeeper.

6. More space efficient. Storing documents electronically frees up valuable office space that would otherwise be taken by filing cabinets.

7. A basic system can be purchased for a few hundred pounds making adoption of document scanning a very cost effective solution.

8. Expandable and scalable system to cope with growth.

9. More time efficient as physical files take time to produce whereas document scanning can be done at each users desk or at a central scanning point.

10. Far more productive. Gartner estimate that a 45% saving in paper handling times is achievable by implementing a document scanning & management system.

With so many variations of document scanning and management to consider it is highly recommended that you choose your supplier carefully and take out references and ask for testimonials.

The choices are mind boggling for those with no experience or knowledge of document scanning or document management and I would recommend doing some research to establish the credentials of a truly independent document management expert, either locally or nationally Ask for testimonials and obtain 2 or 3 different quotations/proposals.Don’t deal with a provider who only carries one range of hardware or software, they may be independent but a choice of one is no choice at all. As a rule of thumb find a supplier who is an authorised reseller of at least 3 recognised scanner brands and at least 2 software offerings.

When talking to the supplier explain clearly what documents you wish to manage and think carefully about the information you need to extract from the page. For example, you may want to cross refer an invoice with a delivery note either by date order or by customer name or order number. This process is called indexing and every business has different requirements.

Ensure that whoever you decide to place your business with has a good track record and have been in business long enough to have a high level of specialist industry knowledge. Ask them for written undertakings of software updates or licenses and establish that these will be provided either free of charge or at pre-arranged cost effective pricing levels.

Finally, don’t get drawn into long contracts, there is no need for this and any business who asks to tie you in to a year long contract or 6 month cancellation clause have no faith in their ability to keep you consistently happy.
