Dolphin Browser For Android Now Features Skitch & Evernote Add-Ons [News]

Dolphin has recently announced the release of two brand new add-ons for its popular Android browser. The Dolphin browser already features a number of useful add-ons such as Read It Later, Dolphin Translate, Dolphin.fm, and various tab management add-ons, and has now added the Skitch add-on and the Evernote add-on.

Skitch, a powerful photo editor and annotator, has recently been acquired by Evernote, the popular notetaking app, and both are now available as add-ons for Dolphin browser on Android. To use the add-ons, you will need to have accounts with Skitch and Evernote. With Skitch, you also need to have the actual Skitch app installed on your device. If you don’t already have accounts or the apps, Dolphin will redirect you to the market when you try to use the add-ons.

dolphin-1

To use the add-ons, slide the screen to the left to reveal the right side panel. For Skitch, first find an image you want to edit, and then tap the Skitch icon. This will load the image in Skitch where you can edit and annotate it. For Evernote, simply choose the text you want to save, tap the Evernote icon and insert the clipping. You can upload it to Evernote right from within Dolphin.

Dolphin is promising lots more add-ons in the upcoming year, and asks for user feedback and ideas for new add-ons and features. So if there’s an add-on you always wished you could have in Dolphin, go ahead and contact them. You’ve got nothing to lose!

What do you think of Dolphin’s new add-ons? Did you get a chance to try them yet?

YouTube Launches YouTube For Schools, Features Safe & Educational Content Only [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/youtube-logo.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Do you remember your excitement as a student when the teacher rolled in that huge TV on a cart and announced that you were going to watch a movie? Those were usually the best and most memorable classes. Google figured this out, and so have launched a special YouTube network, just for schools and universities.

href="http://www.youtube.com/schools?feature=inp-bl-paq">YouTube for Schools is a special network which school administrators can turn on to grant access only to href="http://www.youtube.com/education">YouTube EDU content. YouTube EDU is a huge source of educational videos which is divided into videos for primary & secondary education, university and lifelong learning.

But anyone can access YouTube EDU from anywhere, so what’s special about YouTube for School? Using the network, schools can use content from YouTube EDU in a way that doesn’t expose students to inappropriate content. There are no related videos, no comments, and only educational videos to go around. To make it easier for teachers to find the right videos, they have href="http://youtube.com/teachers?feature=inp-bl-paq">been divided into categories such as math, science and social studies, and are further divided into subjects and grade levels within these categories.

src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NegRGfGYOwQ?hd=1" frameborder="0" width="580" height="325">

In order to get started, head over to href="http://www.youtube.com/schools?feature=inp-bl-paq">YouTube for Schools and sign up using the school’s Google account. YouTube for Schools can actually be a useful solution for other organizations, who wish to allow only educational, appropriate content.

Do you like the idea? Or do you think it’s bad for education? Share your opinions in the comments.

    Apple Updates iBook iOS Application With Night Reading Mode & Other New Features [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/iBooks.jpg" alt="" />iBooks has received a nice little update recently that adds a bunch of new features that users were clamoring for. The first major feature is the addition of a night-time reading mode. This makes the background black and the text white. This makes reading less strenuous when in a dark area.

    The next addition in this update is the inclusion of a full screen mode. This takes all of the background stuff on your iOS device off the screen and allows you to better focus on only what you are reading. This is a great addition with the new notification center in iOS 5 because there is lot more going on the screen. Going into full screen mode makes it easier to ignore all that.

    Apple also added a lot of new fonts, so if you have a particular typeface you like to read in, there is a good chance it is there. Apple added fonts such as Athelas, Charter, Iowa, and Seravek. I prefer to stick with the standard font, but if these fonts are your cup of tea, I’m sure you will love this update.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ibooksnight.png" alt="" width="309" height="452" />

    The last features are improvements to the annotation palate and some new covers for books available in the public domain. These changes are more minor, but enjoyable none the less.

    Get the update from the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8">iTunes App Store.

    Grooveshark Update Brings Improved Interface, Music Discovery & New Features

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_logo.jpg" alt="grooveshark music" />Grooveshark has been a personal favourite music streamer for a few years now, particularly since Spotify took half their music offline to non-subscribers and nerfed the free membership. That’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-improve-grooveshark-music-experience/">not to say that Grooveshark is perfect- far from it. The interface has been in need of an update for a while, and finally the service has a new lease of life. Gone is the single, crammed page with umpteen scroll bars and at-times laggy response – Grooveshark just evolved! So is it any good?

    Looking Good

    The biggest change to Grooveshark is the multiple-page layout you’re now forced into using, which is definitely for your own good. Instead of having your music always to the left of what you’re listening to, it now appears on the My Music page. Friends and other users you follow now appear on the Community page, and Searchis fairly self-explanatory.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_navigation.png" alt="grooveshark music" width="424" height="204" />

    The new Explore page is somewhat exciting, as it offers something Grooveshark has never really had before – a way of discovering new bands, artists and songs you may like (but more on that later). Each of these sections is easily accessible regardless of what you’re doing thanks to the new persistent navigation bar at the top of the page. It’s tremendously fast at switching sections even on the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-lightweight-linux-distributions-give-pc-lease-life/">ageing Linux laptopI’m using for this review. The main issue with the old Grooveshark interface was the clutter and by splitting these sections up the developers have made the website a nicer place to be and sped the whole experience up a notch.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_playlist_area.png" alt="listen grooveshark" width="580" height="202" />

    The playlist area appears rather untouched, and remains tricky to scroll using the mouse pointer alone (though obviously, it’s a cinch with a scrollwheel). I particularly like the fact that the playlist now collapses and snaps to a smaller version instead of forcing a square album-art view (though to be honest with you I might just never have noticed that feature before).

    Discovery & Sharing

    href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-free-ways-discover-music-online/">Music discovery has been properly introduced in this version of Grooveshark, and it’s a great relief to finally see it implemented. Much of my previous Grooveshark use would revolve around me already knowing exactly what I wanted to listen to before visiting the service, and the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-online-radio-stations-to-get-your-music-fix/">radio servicenever really did it for me. In essence developers have added a whole new reason to visit the website and use their service – and this is most definitely a good thing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_explore.jpg" alt="listen grooveshark" width="580" height="274" />

    The Explore page is split into three sections – Featured, Popular and Stations. The latter two aren’t too interesting, with Popular listing the most popular tracks and artists on Grooveshark right now and Stations being a portal to the radio feature which plays randomly from a genre. The Featuredpage lists both artists and new releases that the Grooveshark staff have deemed worthy of being in the spotlight. Hovering one of these new releases displays that enticing “play” logo and clicking adds the release to your playlist without moving you around the website. This is progress, as it takes only a few minutes of clicking before you’ve got hours of new music to listen to.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_explore_full.jpg" alt="listen grooveshark" width="580" height="346" />

    Once you’ve found something you like you’ve now got the option of pinning it to your pinboard, as well as the usual href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/groovylists-itunes-playlists-to-grooveshark/">add to playlist/library options you know and love. The pinboard appears on the My Musicpage and provides quick access to subscriptions, radio channels and of course anything else you fancy pinning there. Aside from this small addition, your music library won’t look much different from what you remember, and it works – so that’s a good thing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_my_music_page.png" alt="download from grooveshark" width="580" height="278" />

    Last but certainly not least there is now a faster way of sharing the music you love with friends and social networks. By clicking on a song and dragging it to the right a new menu appears with options for adding that song to your music, favourites, a playlist or a selection of social channels including Twitter and Facebook. It’s not going to change the world but it works fairly well (so does right-click).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_hover_to_share.jpg" alt="download from grooveshark" width="409" height="441" />

    The Problem With Grooveshark…

    I never expected a simple interface update to solve what I consider to be the main issue with the Grooveshark service: the mess. I won’t dwell on it too much but I’m referring to dud music listings, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-ultimate-guide-to-fixing-your-music-collection/">bad metadataand incomplete albums or EPs. Artists appear multiple times, with multiple spellings. Some albums have repeat tracks or are missing most of the listings and the search often suggests “helpful” phrases which lead you to aforementioned erroneous results.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/grooveshark_bad_metadata.png" alt="grooveshark music" width="474" height="288" />

    This should be the next phase for Grooveshark – the cleanup. The service is free, granted, but Grooveshark do actually charge a fee for access to Grooveshark Anywhere (the only way to ‘shark on the go) and Grooveshark Plus (ad-free) – neither of which I would consider with the library in its current state.

    Conclusion

    Grooveshark’s new interface and features are very much welcomed but you’re going to have to contend with the usual mislabeled messy collection whilst using the service. It’s not a dire affair, and once you’ve started to build up a music collection it becomes less of an issue. It is very nice to finally have a proper discovery section thanks to the Explore page, and overall the interface is smoother and far less claustrophobic so well done Grooveshark. What do you think of the new Grooveshark interface and features? Does the library bother you? Anything you’d like to see added to the service in future? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

    7 “Hidden” iOS 5 Features You Might Have Missed [iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/logo.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios">iOS 5 added so many features, tweaks and improvements to Apple’s mobile operating system that many inclusions seem to have gone by unannounced. Everyone (including us) has been href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/notified-revamped-notification-center-ios-5/">raving about the new Notification Center, the 4S href="http://www.makeuseof.com/?p=90999">battery drain feature (!) and the fact that you no longer need href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-sync-your-itunes-library-with-your-music-folders/">iTunes to update, but what else is new?

    In their marketing spiel, Apple were quick to claim “over 200 new features” had made their way into the update, except they never really explained what they all did. Here I’m hoping to shine some light on a few of the more useful, hidden iOS features you might not have noticed yet. iDevices at the ready!

    Keyboard Shortcuts

    Under Settings, General and then Keyboard it is possible to define words you wish to use as shortcuts for longer words or phrases. As you can see, Apple has added the first for you – when typed, “omw” changes to “On my way!” making it easier and faster to type out commonly used phrases in a message or email.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/keyboardshortcuts.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

    These shortcuts are naturally system-wide, and new ones can be added via the Add New Shortcut… button. Useful shortcuts could include “mymail” for your full email address, “myblog” for your website URL and classics like “ttyl” and “glhf” for the gamers out there.

    Custom Vibration Patterns

    By far one of the coolest (if a little pointless, I digress) new features in iOS 5 is the ability to customise or create your very own vibration patterns. To enable custom vibrations navigate to Settings, General then Accessibility where you will find a Custom Vibrations option. Enable it and return to Settings then Sound where there is now an option at the bottom of the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/vibrationpatterns.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

    Tap it to choose from any of the five in-built patterns, or touch Create New Vibration to record your own. Hit Save once you’re happy with your creation to set it as default. This won’t be the most frequently used feature on your phone, though it can be handy if you find yourself constantly missing alerts.

    AssistiveTouch

    iPad owners are lucky enough to be able to use a few multi-touch gestures off the bat (more on this later) but did you know all iOS devices can make use of AssistiveTouch and its custom gestures? Under Settings, General then Accessibility choose AssistiveTouch and notice the small icon in the bottom right hand corner.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assistivetouch.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

    Touch it and you’ll get quick access to your home screen, favourites and of course gestures. These can be defined by tapping Create New Gesture and dragging out a pattern with your finger. Give it a name and function and you’ve got yourself some gesture-based shortcuts.

    Speak Selection & Voice Over

    Two brand new talking innovations that made it into iOS 5 are Speak Selection and VoiceOver which can both be found under Settings, General then Accessibility (and both need to be enabled before you can use them).

    Speak Selection adds a “Speak” option to any text that you select (be it a webpage, an email or a message you’re still typing) before reading the whole thing back to you at a swift pace. The speaking rate can be modified in the same settings menu as above.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/speakselection.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

    VoiceOver is another potentially useful speaking option, and one that is especially handy for those with poor eyesight who have difficulty navigating their device. This feature simply reads aloud from the screen you are on, listing options and other notes. Both are particularly great at what they do, making your iOS device quite the conversationalist!

    Custom Alerts

    At long last it is possible to change the default alerts that were previously locked to default iOS sounds. These options can be found under Settings then Sounds and include Sent/Received Mail tones, Message tones, Calendar/Reminder alerts and a tweet tone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/customalerts.jpg" alt="ios features" width="320" height="480" />

    If you find you’re still missing notifications you can try turning on LED Flash for Alerts under Settings, General then Accessibility. This will flash your camera LED when your phone receives a notification, but be aware your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-ways-boost-cell-phone-battery-life-iphone-android-smartphones/">battery life will probably be affected too.

    In-Built Dictionary

    Another useful feature that made its way into this release is the in-built dictionary which allows you to select a word using the standard text select method and tap Define in order to check its meaning and pronunciation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/dictionary.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

    There is no way to access the dictionary other than via the context menu once a word has been selected.

    iPad Specifics

    Those of you lucky enough to own an iPad will enjoy the few iPad-specific enhancements that iOS 5 has to offer. Multi-touch gestures are now here to stay, and you can use four or five fingers to pinch to reveal the home screen, scroll up to reveal the app-switcher (as opposed to double tapping the Home button) and scroll left or right to switch between apps.

    The other feature worth noting is the split keyboard option which is accessed by holding the bottom left icon on the keyboard in typing mode and choosing Split. This makes typing with your thumbs far more accessible, and the keyboard can even be undocked (hold the button again) in case it’s in your way.

    Conclusion

    These are just a few of the fabled 200+ enhancements Apple managed to squeeze into href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-ios-5-update/">the most exciting version of iOS yet. If you know of any others then please don’t hesitate in sharing them in the comments below.

As you can see, Apple has added the first for you – when typed, “omw” changes to “On my way!” making it easier and faster to type out commonly used phrases in a message or email.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/keyboardshortcuts.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

Enable it and return to Settings then Sound where there is now an option at the bottom of the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/vibrationpatterns.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

Under Settings, General then Accessibility choose AssistiveTouch and notice the small icon in the bottom right hand corner.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assistivetouch.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

The speaking rate can be modified in the same settings menu as above.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/speakselection.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

These options can be found under Settings then Sounds and include Sent/Received Mail tones, Message tones, Calendar/Reminder alerts and a tweet tone.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/customalerts.jpg" alt="ios features" width="320" height="480" />

    Another useful feature that made its way into this release is the in-built dictionary which allows you to select a word using the standard text select method and tap Define in order to check its meaning and pronunciation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/dictionary.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

    The Best New Features Of Magazine Style Apps For the iPad

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/main-screen-1.jpg" alt="ipad magazine"/>I’ve been a huge fan of magazine style apps ever since the release of href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard, followed by href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pulse-news-for-ipad/id371088673?mt=8">Pulse, and then href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite-personalized-magazine/id419752338?mt=8">Zite. These apps pull articles from around the net based either upon your specific topical interests, designated RSS feeds, and/or your Twitter and Facebook timelines.

    The design, layout and presentation of content in these apps take full advantage of the iPad’s size, orientation, and tactile features. Using the finger gestures, you literally flip through articles like you would in an actual paper magazine.

    All three iPad magazine apps have similar features, but each has something unique  that might cause you to use all three. In this article I share some of the best new features in these apps, and explain why you might download one or all of them to your iPad.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard

    href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/flipboard-social-magazine/">Flipboard was the first magazine style app for the iPad. It pulls popular content for all types of topics you select, including entertainment, sports, travel, news and business.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10411.jpg" alt="ipad magazine" width="580" height="369" />

    If you are a heavy Twitter or Facebook user, you will simply love how the content of your social networking feeds are displayed in this application. Flipboard turns your link-based tweets for example into actual articles.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1034.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="435" height="580"/>

    You can even select to view your own tweets, your timeline, your Twitter lists, and even your selected favorites. So basically Flipboard can be your Twitter iPad client as you browse in the app.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10311.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="433" height="378"/>

    The newest feature added to Flipboard is improved Twitter and Google integration, which allows you to post tweets, notes, and attachments directly to your Twitter timeline or Google Reader account, which saves you the trouble of opening separate applications for these postings.

    While you can’t add specific RSS feeds to Flipboard, you can search for any site and link to its content.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pulse-news-for-ipad/id371088673?mt=8">Pulse

    href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pulse-free-visual-display-rss-news-reader-ipad/">Pulse is more of a RSS feed reader for both the iPad and iPhone. Unlike Flipboard and Zite, Pulse does not select articles for you, or pull content from your social network streams. With Pulse however you can have pages and pages of feed articles displayed in columns. You can slide each column to the left and scan preview summaries of downloaded content.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1036.jpg" alt="magazine on ipad" width="435" height="580"/>

    When you select an article, it opens in Reader-only format, minus distracting ads and other abstruse content.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1026.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="433" height="323"/>

    The best and unique feature for Pulse is the ability to select and save articles to your .me Pulse account. All your saved content can be synced between your other iOS device, as well as your online Pulse account.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1030.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="435" height="234"/>

    As with the two other magazine apps, Pulse integrates with Facebook, Twitter, and Mail, but not with Instapaper.

    href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite-personalized-magazine/id419752338?mt=8">Zite

    href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">Zite creates magazine content based on broad topics you select, including fashion, entrepreneurship, health and exercise, travel tips, pets, social media, and the like. You cannot add RSS feeds directly to your Zite collection. It pulls popular content based on topics you select.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1038.png" alt="ipad app magazine" width="435" height="580"/>

    However, Zite’s newest update allows you to connect to your other bookmarking and news service accounts, including Twitter, Google Reader, Delicious, and Read It Later.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1024.png" alt="" width="431" height="287"/>

    Zite will build magazine content from the services, but it will not include all the articles that get added to say your Google Reader account.

    Zite attempts to learn what you like based on the type of articles, topics, and sources you choose. You can directly tell it which type of content you want to see more of.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_1027.png" alt="" width="373" height="228" />

    Another unique and new feature that Zite offers is the ability to have multiple profiles in the application. This means that if you share your iPad with someone else, he or she can create a magazine of their own selected content, separate from yours.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_10401.png" alt="ipad magazine" width="580" height="261"/>

    Let us know what you like about these iPap magazine style readers. If you’re looking for alternatives to these apps, check href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-flipboard-alternatives-computer-ipad/">4 Flipboard Alternatives for Your Computer If You Don’t Own An iPad.

    Get Rid Of Some Annoying Facebook Features With These 4 Add-Ons [Chrome]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image162.png" alt="" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook keeps changing and changing. Every month or so, users enjoy (or deal with) a new change in Facebook’s interface. While some people are really excited about the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebook-timeline-starts-rolling-user-profiles-today-news/">recent Timeline profiles, others are still ticked off at things like the news ticker and the chat sidebar.

    Another thing Facebook keep changing is the way we view images. While Photo Theater keeps improving and is no longer a major source of agitation to Facebook users, and while thumbnails keep growing, some people are still looking for an easy and quick way to view images in full size.

    If one or more of these things are bothering you, I’ve rounded up some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-chrome/">Chrome extensions that are sure to make you a happier Facebook user.

    Facebook Classic

    href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ffdodpcdalagnkbkojidmmcehlnhniad?hl=en-US">Facebook Classic is a Chrome add-on for people who dislike the new ticker, but want to be able to easily toggle it on again. It also gets rid of the new top stories and arranges the newsfeed in chronological order again.

    After you install the add-on and refresh Facebook, the news ticker will disappear completely, leaving only the bottom half of the sidebar with the chat. You’ll also see the “Latest Stories” header instead of the “New Top Story” and “Recent Stories“. The change is not only to the titles – the small triangle to the left of each newsfeed item will also disappear. This triangle is usually used to mark a story as a “top story”.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-12h37_32.png" alt="2011-10-11 12h37_32" width="580" height="429" border="0" />

    If you want to turn on the ticker, find the “Show Ticker” link on the right side. This will toggle the news ticker on. You can toggle it back off whenever you want using the “Hide Ticker” link.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-12h41_10.png" alt="2011-10-11 12h41_10" width="346" height="193" border="0" />

    Facebook–

    href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fecghihpjcmbdaicliecdpofhhianacj?hl=en&hc=search&hcp=main">Facebook– is another Chrome add-on which deals with similar issues. Once you download Facebook–, the news ticker will be gone. Use this add-on if you really don’t want to see the news ticker, because there’s no easy way to toggle it on and off.

    As opposed to Facebook Classic, it also doesn’t leave you with half a sidebar for the chat, but expands the chat so it takes up the entire sidebar, the way it used to be before the news ticker joined the party.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-13h04_51.png" alt="2011-10-11 13h04_51" width="504" height="441" border="0" />

    Another thing Facebook– does is restore the title bar to the way it used to be. You get your Settings button back, and you lose your name and thumbnail in the title bar. Nice if you miss Facebook’s older look.

    Sidebar Disabler

    href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bfipfkeoidmndggnnpobeenlamiclald?hl=en&hc=search&hcp=main">Sidebar Disabler is a Chrome, href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fb-chat-sidebar-disabler/">Firefox and href="https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/facebook-chat-sidebar-disabler/1.9.6/?display=en">Opera add-on which leaves your news ticker alone in its non-sidebar position, and turns the sidebar into the good old Facebook chat.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-13h30_30.png" alt="2011-10-11 13h30_30" width="393" height="563" border="0" />

    If the news ticker is not your problem, but you’re just sick of the sidebar as a concept, you’ll be able to forget about it with this add-on. The old chat returns in full glory, along with the old options and friend lists. You also get to see only your online friends again, which is one of the most sorely missed features in the new chat sidebar.

    FB Photo Zoom

    Moving on to quite a different subject, href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/elioihkkcdgakfbahdoddophfngopipi?hl=en&hc=search&hcp=ext">FB Photo Zoom has nothing to do with news tickers and sidebars, but has a lot to do with the way you view images. Some people still don’t like Facebook’s Photo Theater, and others (like me), are just too lazy to click the thumbnail every time they want to view a full-size image.

    With FB Photo Zoom, hovering over a thumbnail with your mouse cursor will automatically open a preview of the full size image. This preview even moves along as you move your mouse, but disappears immediately if your cursor leaves the thumbnail.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-13h21_58.png" alt="2011-10-11 13h21_58" width="580" height="408" border="0" />

    FB Photo Zoom also comes with some configurable settings. You can use it to disable Photo Theater if you still hate it. You can create a keyboard shortcut to toggle the zooming effect on and off, and another shortcut to force-enable it even when it’s off. You can even control the delays of the fade in and fade out of images.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-11-13h28_13.png" alt="2011-10-11 13h28_13" width="562" height="391" border="0" />

    This also works with the tiny “Friends on Chat” thumbnails, which are so small they’re often unrecognizable. Quite an upgrade to your casual Facebook image viewing experience.

    Bottom Line

    The more changes Facebook makes, the more add-ons like these we’re going to find. I think it’s awesome that so many different ones exist – this way we can each create a user experience that suits us best, and make the most of Facebook without the things that annoy us.

    If none of these add-ons hit the spot for you, you can find some more of them in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remove-facebook-news-ticker-fixed-header-chrome/">this post by Steve. If there are even better Facebook add-ons, or if you think people should stop complaining and enjoy the changes, do tell us about it in the comments!

    Kobo Launches Kobo Vox & An Android eReader With Integrated Social Reading Features [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-22-14h59_23.jpg" alt="" />Kobo has announced a new eReader which they refer to as “the first social eReader”. The new device, Kobo Vox, will include social features that will integrate mainly with Facebook, but also with Twitter and email. Vox will run Android 2.3 on a 7-inch color touch screen, which is meant to enhance not only your reading experience, but also the social part of it.

    The new Vox is actually a tablet, akin to the Kindle Fire, and can be used also for surfing, for checking e-mails, and for downloading apps.

    Kobo are putting a strong emphasis on the social features introduced in the new Vox. Using the social program, Reading Life, you’ll be able to share books, pages, and even single passages with your friends, explore social statistics and comments about what you’re reading, get recommendations for new books and see exactly who’s reading the same book as you are.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-22-14h46_59.jpg" alt="2011-10-22 14h46_59" width="442" height="407" border="0" />

    On the bottom part of each page, Kobo has placed a “pulse” icon. This icon grows larger as the social activity on this page increases. This way you can know what pages are really popular, and read everything your friends have to say while you’re reading.

    What do you think of the social reading idea? Is it just the feature you’ve been waiting for, or will it add unnecessary noise to the reading experience? Let us know.

    Apple Officially Announces iPhone 4S – Features, Price & Release Date [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iPhone-logo.gif" alt="" />The conference started off slow, with Apple pretty much talking about how great they are and how much their products sell. Which is all fine and good, but they know why everyone was there – to finally find out all about the new iPhone.

    The first big piece of news to come out of the conference is that iOS 5 is releasing across all newer (back to 3GS) Apple devices on October 12th 2011.

    The brand new iPhone 4S, which looks just like the iPhone 4 on the outside, has received a major update on the inside. It comes with an A5 processor and is twice as fast as the iPhone 4. It features a dual core graphics chip, making the graphic capabilities up to 7 times better than that of the earlier iPhone. In addition to boosting the raw power, the new device actually gains increased battery life over the iPhone 4. It now has up to 8 hours of talk time.

    The 4S also sports a new 8 megapixel camera. The new camera also takes 73% percent brighter pictures, and is one-third faster than the iPhone 4. The new camera also takes full HD 1080P video and has built-in stabilization.

    The rumored Siri voice control is in the phone, and it looks to be incredibly powerful. It seems to take voice commands to a whole new level. Siri is a personal assistant living in your iPhone.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iphone5apple2011liveblogkeynote1590.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="399" />

    There will be both black and white versions, while the pricing will be 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299 and 64GB for $399. iPhone 4 will be $99 for 8GB and the 8GB 3GS will be free with a contract.

    In the US the new iPhone will be on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon and it will also be available in Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and Japan as well. Pre-orders start on October 7th, and the device goes on sale October 14th. On October 28th the device will roll out to 22 more countries.

    The Make-Over Features Of Mail In OS X Lion [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1081.jpg" alt="Screenshot1081" />Out of the 250+ new features in Apple’s Mac OS X Lion, the Mail application seems to have received the biggest number overall. No doubt for most of us, checking our email is a bittersweet daily task. We may look forward to receiving messages from friends and family, or notices about a cool software update, but checking emails and managing them can sometimes be a sheer hassle.

    In its latest version of Mail, Apple streamlined the user interface of the application so that emails can be previewed, sorted, and searched more effectively. I have already href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-taming-os-lion/">written about one new feature in Mail, but there are several others that you may have overlooked. Let’s see what time-saving features the new Mail has to offer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1079.jpg" alt="Screenshot1079" width="580" height="342" border="0" />

    Column Views

    The most significant streamlining that Apple did to the user interface of Mail is to incorporate column views. The left column is for  mailboxes and folders; the center section contains your Inbox of email messages; and the third column consists of selected message(s). In the column view, you can now streamline and group messages into “conversations,” with senders you have replied back to.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1080.jpg" alt="Screenshot1080" width="580" height="364" border="0" />

    Also, with the new bookmarks bar feature (which I will talk about next) in Mail, you may find less need for the first column. So you can simply hide it, especially if you’re running Mail on a small laptop Mac.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_2.png" alt="Maillion 2" width="480" height="117" border="0" />

    style="text-align: center;">Notice also that the Inbox includes a preview, consisting of the first two lines of each message.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_151.png" alt="Maillion 151" width="275" height="387" border="0" />

    Favorites Bar

    One of the best and, I think, most useful new features in Mail is the favorites bar that sits right below the toolbar. The favorites bar includes a few default Mail folders, such as Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Notes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_16.png" alt="Maillion 16" width="555" height="106" border="0" />

    With these folders at the top, you may not need the first column as much in Mail. Also, what you may not realize at first – because it was not obvious to me for several weeks after using the new Mail – is that you can drag other mailboxes, folders, and accounts (in the form of an alias) to the favorites bar. This feature essentially works like the Bookmarks Bar in Safari.

    Search Features

    Apple has also improved the search capabilities of Mail. Now when you search for a name or other subject, the search results get broken down by “People“, “Subjects” and “Mailboxes“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_61.png" alt="Maillion 61" width="325" height="439" border="0" />

    When you select a search result, you can further narrow the type of email you are looking for, for example, “From“, “To” or “Entire Message“.  I think Apple understood that for many users, searching for a name or subject is often faster than using mailboxes and folders.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_12.png" alt="Maillion 12" width="374" height="123" border="0" />

    You can also refine your search by using what is called “Tokens“. For example, if you want to find all the emails you received from Amazon.com in the month of August, you can simply type, “Amazon August 2011“. There doesn’t seem to be a definitive list of tokens that can be used for searches, but a few that worked for me include: “last week”, “last month” and “last year”.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_13.png" alt="Maillion 13" width="382" height="116" border="0" />

    One more time saving feature is that you can actually save searches. After conducting a search, you can click the Save button on the right side of Mail, and from there a Smart Mailbox rule will be initiated for you. You can add and change the rules, and save the mailbox, which automatically updates itself based on the rules you set. Smart Mailboxes, which I have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/five-essential-smart-mailboxes-for-apple-mail-mac/">written about before, and in my href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-the-awesome-automation-guide-for-mac-users">MUO Guide to Mac Automation, are huge time savers when it comes to managing e-mails.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/savesearches.png" alt="Savesearches" width="580" height="157" border="0" />

    Flagging & Sorting

    For Mail power users, Apple has also made it easier to sort messages in the Inbox – by Attachments, by Date, by Flags, Subject, and so forth. This type of sorting is also useful when you want to sort and delete messages in bulk.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_71.png" alt="Maillion 71" width="400" height="344" border="0" />

    For those of you who like to flag messages, Apple included multiple colored flags, which are similar to the multi-colored labels in the Finder. Just right- or control-click on a message to select and add a flag to it. As you will see, you can also filter messages by flags. You can change the label for flags, by looking under the Reminders > Flagged section in the first column of Mail. Flags that you have applied to messages will appear in that section. Double-click on a flag’s label to change it.

    href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot65.png"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-85932" title="muoscreenshot65" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot65.png" alt="" width="211" height="117" />

    Archive Messages

    If you have a batch of emails that you would like to archive, the new version of Mail makes it easier to do so. Simply select designated messages, and choose Message> Archive in the menu bar.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/archivemail.png" alt="Archivemail" width="356" height="410" border="0" />

    Archiving messages is a great way to de-clutter and manage messages in your mailbox.

    As you tinker around and use Mail more you will discover a few other small changes that might make the task of reading and managing emails a little less troublesome.

    Tell us what you like and dislike about Mail in Mac OS X Lion, and what features you find the most useful.

    Personalize Your System & Enable Hidden Features With Deep [Mac]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1016.png" alt="" />While Apple provides numerous ways for Mac users to customize and change hundreds of features and preferences – from desktop images, to the default Dock position, to advanced Terminal hacks – some third-party developers have provided even more ways to personalize, enable, and disable hidden functions.

    Titanium’s href="http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php?sid=edae21f46f6ac4b1e4b4800a719b92f7">Deeper personalization utility for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion is one the best programs I know of to make tweaks to your Dock, QuickTime, Safari, iTunes, log-in window, Spotlight, and much more (we have also previously covered a similar program called href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-tools-to-keep-your-mac-in-tip-top-shape/">MainMenu). Some of the changes you can make with Deeper can also be done in the Preferences options of the Finder and other Mac applications, but let’s check out some of the unique hacks that can be done using Deeper.

    General Functions

    Deeper has over a hundred functions that you can customize on your Mac. In the General category, (I’m using the Snow Leopard version of Deeper for this review. The Lion version has some slight differences. Both downloads href="http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php">here) you can specify the default image format for screen captures, and where you want them saved.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1021.png" alt="Screenshot1021" width="580" height="559" border="0" />

    Among the other functions, you can also select to have Deeper display one of a dozen animated backgrounds on your desktop. It’s like running a screensaver on your desktop as you’re working in any application.

    Also, if you’re annoyed by those alert messages you get after downloading and opening an application, Deeper allows you to disable that message.

    Finder Functions

    Most of the function changes in the Finder category require you to restart the Finder in order to have the changes applied. Be careful, selecting some of these functions will immediately relaunch the Finder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1025.png" alt="Screenshot1025" width="580" height="361" border="0" />

    In this category, you get options to make the background of the menu bar transparent, grey, or white. You can also show or hide the “Eject” and “Burn to Disc” functions in the drop-down File menu.

    Another interesting change you can make is to the folder content previews for Quick Look. Selecting this option “allows you to display a transparent folder icon as well as the preview items located in the selected folder. When the folder contains more than one item, a small animation rotates the various previews.”

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1032.png" alt="Screenshot1032" width="580" height="337" border="0" />

    Dock Functions

    In addition to the existing options you have for controlling the Dock, Deeper provides even more. You can select to change the appearance of the Dock to a 3D with mirror effect or 2D transparency effect. You can also select to have the Dock show only running applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1018.png" alt="Screenshot1018" width="375" height="54" border="0" />

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1019.png" alt="Screenshot1019" width="348" height="50" border="0" />

    In addition, you can lock the size of the icons in the Dock, as well as selecting and enabling what is called Single Application mode. This function works like iOS apps. When you click the icon and application in the Dock that is already launched, it will appear in the foreground and hide the other applications simultaneously.

    Other Categories

    The five other categories in Deeper include function changes that can be made in QuickTime, Safari, Mail, log-in, Spotlight, and several other native OS X utility applications. A few changes unique to Deeper include the ability to change the background image of the log-in screen of your Mac.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1026.png" alt="Screenshot1026" width="574" height="93" border="0" />

    If you have one or more Macs that are publicly used, say in a school, Deeper can disable the Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out menu items in the Apple menu. You can choose a different Start-up Mode for your Mac – either Normal, Safe Mode, Verbose, or Single user.

    For iTunes, you can disable the iTunes Store and Ping in the side menu bar, as well as enable half-star ratings. When this function is applied, you just have to click beside a point or a star to assign a 1/2 notation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-shot-2011-08-22-at-7.13.04-PM.png" alt="Screen shot 2011 08 22 at 7 13 04 PM" width="467" height="124" border="0" />

    There are a couple of dozen other functions you can enable with Deeper, including debug menus, setting the Help Viewer window to “floating mode”, and enabling the developer mode of the Dashboard. Deeper is clearly for Mac users who want to get more out of their computer. The application’s Help documentation explains every category and function, and it’s easy to restore functions to their default status.

    The New Features In WordPress 3.2 & Why You Should Upgrade

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/wordpress-logo-300x300.png?54167">If you haven’t noticed already from your blog dashboard, WordPress has just released version 3.2, the next major release. Quite a lot has changed, so let’s take a closer look at why you might want to upgrade. There’s a whole host of speed and UI improvements awaiting you, as well as a brand new default theme.

    New Minimum Requirements

    First up, WordPress has raised the bar for your server requirements, and you absolutely must be running PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0 or higher. If you’re not sure what versions you’re running, an easy way to check is to create a php file in the root of your website (any filename will do as long as it ends in .php, but for the sake of demonstration I’ll call mine phpinfo.php) – then add the following single line of code to the file:

    class="wp_syntax"> class="code">
    <?php phpinfo();?>

    Save, and access the file using your browser. Directly at the top will be a line saying which version of php you have, and if you do a text search for “Client API version”, you’ll see what version of MySQL you have too.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/phpversion.jpg?54167">

    Ready To Upgrade?

    Having checked the minimum requirements, take a full backup of your files and database. I described href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/backup-website-ssh-command-line/">how to do this via the command line before, or you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-methods-storing-wordpress-blog-backups/">try the non-techie method if you don’t have SSH access.

    Bear in mind that while the majority of plugins generally don’t have an issue, if you’re using something particularly hardcore such as caching or major functionality changes then you may run into some problems. In that case your only option is to either restore from a backup or find alternative plugins. Make sure all of your plugins are up to date before proceeding with the core WordPress update through the admin panel.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wordpress-updateme.jpg?54167">

    What Do To If Things Go Wrong

    The first step is to try a manual installation. Download a fresh copy of the files from href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress.org and re-upload everything to your FTP server EXCEPT wp-content. If you overwrite your wp-content folder, all your uploads and pictures etc will be gone, as I found out once. Be careful! Once fully uploaded, manually visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php to run the upgrade process manually on the database.

    If you’ve upgraded but you’re getting errors or a blank screen, it may be a particular plugin. Rename your plugins folder to temporarily deactivate them all, then move them back one by one to find the culprit.

    So, What’s New?

    Speed!

    For those of us with larger sites, speed is a major issue. 3.2 brings a ton of speed improvements, most notably in the admin side of things where you’ll find yourself zipping around now. The core code has been updated too, removing unnecessary functions and optimising database queries.

    Distraction Free Writing

    Wow – this is actually really cool. When using the visual editor to write your post, there’s a new button on the toolbar. Click that to hide all interface elements, and jump straight into a WriteRoom-esque fullscreen distraction-free UI.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/fullscreen-button.jpg?54167">

    Moving the mouse will cause a minimal set of buttons to display as well as the exit fullscreen, but they soon fade to this:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/distraction-free-writing.jpg?54167">

    Beautiful… and combined with the speed improvements I think this will really cause a lot of people to stop writing offline in tools such as Windows Live Writer. Fullscreen mode also works in HTML view, but the button the toolbar is labelled as simply “fullscreen”, so it’s easier to find.

    New Default Theme

    Twenty-Eleven is the new included theme, and it’s simple incredible. Built from the ground up to take advantage of HTML5, it now offers far more customisation than ever before, including options such as layout. It’s going to set new standards in theme design and puts many premium templates even to shame. Let’s have a closer look.

    Post Formats

    Built into the theme are now Tumblr-like post format options – asides, links, quotes, gallery. I haven’t had time to explore these formats in much depth, but for many these are going to be the highlight of the new theme I think.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twenty-eleven-dark.jpg?54167">

    Layout & Style Options

    Choose between either light or dark, sidebar on left or right or none at all, and change the default link color. You can get a dramatically unique look in seconds. The underlying look and feel of the theme is fantastically clean and tidy.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/theme-options.jpg?54167">

    Random Headers

    Upload more than one file to use as a header and you’ll now be able to rotate through them randomly, which is nice.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/random-images-header.jpg?54167">

    For some rather odd reason, they decided to remove the sidebar from single post pages, a rather obvious oversight but one that is easily fixed by downloading a href="http://futurewebblog.com/add-sidebar-support-posts-twenty-eleven-theme/">slightly modified child theme from here.

    Better Admin Toolbar

    It was an interesting feature added in version 3, but to be honest I never saw much point to the admin bar. Thankfully, it’s been updated with lots more useful links on the Add New menu, so I might re-enable it.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/better-admin-bar.jpg?54167">

    Should You Upgrade?

    The underlying code in WordPress 3.2 has been cleaned up so that not only the backend is faster but core functions too, so for that alone it’s worth upgrading. The new default theme is such a vast improvement that hopefully it’ll prevent some of the cookie-cutter default installs I see so many of when people just can’t be bothered to customise their blog at all.

    That’s all for today – if you have problems upgrading then let us know in the comments or crowd source your problem to the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">tech support community part of MakeUseOf. class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/flipboard-1.jpg?54167" alt="" />RSS feed apps for the iPad are almost a dime a dozen, but only a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-free-rss-readers-ipad/">few top ranking ones have the magazine style quality and features of  class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard, the first in its category. Last week Flipboard rolled out a slew of upgrade features, a few not found in the RSS apps of its three top competitors -  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pulse-free-visual-display-rss-news-reader-ipad/">Pulse, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feedly-mobile-news-google-reader-feeds-stylish-app-ios-android/">Feedly, and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">Zite.

    Flipboard CEO, Mike McCue said on TechCrunchTV that the upgraded Flipboard has been downloaded by over 2.5 million users.

    New Features

    The 1.5 version of Flipboard includes faster red ribbon access to all your social networks, favorite sections, and a wide range of pre-selected feeds to choose among, from news and business to sports and science. You can actually now view the content of feeds without adding them to your own list.

    You can do a search for people, publications, websites, or topics such as National Geographic, Design or Ashton Kutcher. You can add MakeUseOf simply by tapping on the red ribbon in the upper-right side of the screen and typing, “makeuseof.com” in the search field.  Select the MUO feed and if you like, add it to your Flipboard.

    A few long awaited features of the new Flipboard include the ability to favor open articles, as well the ability to save articles to your Instapaper account.

    Since the debut of Flipboard last year, the 1.5 update is faster and more streamlined, but with the same magazine style feel of flipping pages and reading content. Plus now you can use Flipboard to connect with your contacts on Twitter and Facebook, including LinkendIn integration for additional social sharing and updating.

    Mike McCue told TechCrunch that the iPhone version of Flipboard is also in the works and will be coming out soon.
