The Make-Over Features Of Mail In OS X Lion [Mac]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1081.jpg" alt="Screenshot1081" />Out of the 250+ new features in Apple’s Mac OS X Lion, the Mail application seems to have received the biggest number overall. No doubt for most of us, checking our email is a bittersweet daily task. We may look forward to receiving messages from friends and family, or notices about a cool software update, but checking emails and managing them can sometimes be a sheer hassle.

In its latest version of Mail, Apple streamlined the user interface of the application so that emails can be previewed, sorted, and searched more effectively. I have already href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-taming-os-lion/">written about one new feature in Mail, but there are several others that you may have overlooked. Let’s see what time-saving features the new Mail has to offer.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1079.jpg" alt="Screenshot1079" width="580" height="342" border="0" />

Column Views

The most significant streamlining that Apple did to the user interface of Mail is to incorporate column views. The left column is for  mailboxes and folders; the center section contains your Inbox of email messages; and the third column consists of selected message(s). In the column view, you can now streamline and group messages into “conversations,” with senders you have replied back to.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1080.jpg" alt="Screenshot1080" width="580" height="364" border="0" />

Also, with the new bookmarks bar feature (which I will talk about next) in Mail, you may find less need for the first column. So you can simply hide it, especially if you’re running Mail on a small laptop Mac.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_2.png" alt="Maillion 2" width="480" height="117" border="0" />

style="text-align: center;">Notice also that the Inbox includes a preview, consisting of the first two lines of each message.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_151.png" alt="Maillion 151" width="275" height="387" border="0" />

Favorites Bar

One of the best and, I think, most useful new features in Mail is the favorites bar that sits right below the toolbar. The favorites bar includes a few default Mail folders, such as Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Notes.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_16.png" alt="Maillion 16" width="555" height="106" border="0" />

With these folders at the top, you may not need the first column as much in Mail. Also, what you may not realize at first – because it was not obvious to me for several weeks after using the new Mail – is that you can drag other mailboxes, folders, and accounts (in the form of an alias) to the favorites bar. This feature essentially works like the Bookmarks Bar in Safari.

Search Features

Apple has also improved the search capabilities of Mail. Now when you search for a name or other subject, the search results get broken down by “People“, “Subjects” and “Mailboxes“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_61.png" alt="Maillion 61" width="325" height="439" border="0" />

When you select a search result, you can further narrow the type of email you are looking for, for example, “From“, “To” or “Entire Message“.  I think Apple understood that for many users, searching for a name or subject is often faster than using mailboxes and folders.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_12.png" alt="Maillion 12" width="374" height="123" border="0" />

You can also refine your search by using what is called “Tokens“. For example, if you want to find all the emails you received from Amazon.com in the month of August, you can simply type, “Amazon August 2011“. There doesn’t seem to be a definitive list of tokens that can be used for searches, but a few that worked for me include: “last week”, “last month” and “last year”.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_13.png" alt="Maillion 13" width="382" height="116" border="0" />

One more time saving feature is that you can actually save searches. After conducting a search, you can click the Save button on the right side of Mail, and from there a Smart Mailbox rule will be initiated for you. You can add and change the rules, and save the mailbox, which automatically updates itself based on the rules you set. Smart Mailboxes, which I have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/five-essential-smart-mailboxes-for-apple-mail-mac/">written about before, and in my href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-the-awesome-automation-guide-for-mac-users">MUO Guide to Mac Automation, are huge time savers when it comes to managing e-mails.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/savesearches.png" alt="Savesearches" width="580" height="157" border="0" />

Flagging & Sorting

For Mail power users, Apple has also made it easier to sort messages in the Inbox – by Attachments, by Date, by Flags, Subject, and so forth. This type of sorting is also useful when you want to sort and delete messages in bulk.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/maillion_71.png" alt="Maillion 71" width="400" height="344" border="0" />

For those of you who like to flag messages, Apple included multiple colored flags, which are similar to the multi-colored labels in the Finder. Just right- or control-click on a message to select and add a flag to it. As you will see, you can also filter messages by flags. You can change the label for flags, by looking under the Reminders > Flagged section in the first column of Mail. Flags that you have applied to messages will appear in that section. Double-click on a flag’s label to change it.

href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot65.png"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-85932" title="muoscreenshot65" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/muoscreenshot65.png" alt="" width="211" height="117" />

Archive Messages

If you have a batch of emails that you would like to archive, the new version of Mail makes it easier to do so. Simply select designated messages, and choose Message> Archive in the menu bar.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/archivemail.png" alt="Archivemail" width="356" height="410" border="0" />

Archiving messages is a great way to de-clutter and manage messages in your mailbox.

As you tinker around and use Mail more you will discover a few other small changes that might make the task of reading and managing emails a little less troublesome.

Tell us what you like and dislike about Mail in Mac OS X Lion, and what features you find the most useful.

Personalize Your System & Enable Hidden Features With Deep [Mac]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1016.png" alt="" />While Apple provides numerous ways for Mac users to customize and change hundreds of features and preferences – from desktop images, to the default Dock position, to advanced Terminal hacks – some third-party developers have provided even more ways to personalize, enable, and disable hidden functions.

Titanium’s href="http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php?sid=edae21f46f6ac4b1e4b4800a719b92f7">Deeper personalization utility for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion is one the best programs I know of to make tweaks to your Dock, QuickTime, Safari, iTunes, log-in window, Spotlight, and much more (we have also previously covered a similar program called href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-tools-to-keep-your-mac-in-tip-top-shape/">MainMenu). Some of the changes you can make with Deeper can also be done in the Preferences options of the Finder and other Mac applications, but let’s check out some of the unique hacks that can be done using Deeper.

General Functions

Deeper has over a hundred functions that you can customize on your Mac. In the General category, (I’m using the Snow Leopard version of Deeper for this review. The Lion version has some slight differences. Both downloads href="http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php">here) you can specify the default image format for screen captures, and where you want them saved.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1021.png" alt="Screenshot1021" width="580" height="559" border="0" />

Among the other functions, you can also select to have Deeper display one of a dozen animated backgrounds on your desktop. It’s like running a screensaver on your desktop as you’re working in any application.

Also, if you’re annoyed by those alert messages you get after downloading and opening an application, Deeper allows you to disable that message.

Finder Functions

Most of the function changes in the Finder category require you to restart the Finder in order to have the changes applied. Be careful, selecting some of these functions will immediately relaunch the Finder.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1025.png" alt="Screenshot1025" width="580" height="361" border="0" />

In this category, you get options to make the background of the menu bar transparent, grey, or white. You can also show or hide the “Eject” and “Burn to Disc” functions in the drop-down File menu.

Another interesting change you can make is to the folder content previews for Quick Look. Selecting this option “allows you to display a transparent folder icon as well as the preview items located in the selected folder. When the folder contains more than one item, a small animation rotates the various previews.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1032.png" alt="Screenshot1032" width="580" height="337" border="0" />

Dock Functions

In addition to the existing options you have for controlling the Dock, Deeper provides even more. You can select to change the appearance of the Dock to a 3D with mirror effect or 2D transparency effect. You can also select to have the Dock show only running applications.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1018.png" alt="Screenshot1018" width="375" height="54" border="0" />

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1019.png" alt="Screenshot1019" width="348" height="50" border="0" />

In addition, you can lock the size of the icons in the Dock, as well as selecting and enabling what is called Single Application mode. This function works like iOS apps. When you click the icon and application in the Dock that is already launched, it will appear in the foreground and hide the other applications simultaneously.

Other Categories

The five other categories in Deeper include function changes that can be made in QuickTime, Safari, Mail, log-in, Spotlight, and several other native OS X utility applications. A few changes unique to Deeper include the ability to change the background image of the log-in screen of your Mac.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/screenshot1026.png" alt="Screenshot1026" width="574" height="93" border="0" />

If you have one or more Macs that are publicly used, say in a school, Deeper can disable the Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out menu items in the Apple menu. You can choose a different Start-up Mode for your Mac – either Normal, Safe Mode, Verbose, or Single user.

For iTunes, you can disable the iTunes Store and Ping in the side menu bar, as well as enable half-star ratings. When this function is applied, you just have to click beside a point or a star to assign a 1/2 notation.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-shot-2011-08-22-at-7.13.04-PM.png" alt="Screen shot 2011 08 22 at 7 13 04 PM" width="467" height="124" border="0" />

There are a couple of dozen other functions you can enable with Deeper, including debug menus, setting the Help Viewer window to “floating mode”, and enabling the developer mode of the Dashboard. Deeper is clearly for Mac users who want to get more out of their computer. The application’s Help documentation explains every category and function, and it’s easy to restore functions to their default status.

The New Features In WordPress 3.2 & Why You Should Upgrade

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/wordpress-logo-300x300.png?54167">If you haven’t noticed already from your blog dashboard, WordPress has just released version 3.2, the next major release. Quite a lot has changed, so let’s take a closer look at why you might want to upgrade. There’s a whole host of speed and UI improvements awaiting you, as well as a brand new default theme.

New Minimum Requirements

First up, WordPress has raised the bar for your server requirements, and you absolutely must be running PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0 or higher. If you’re not sure what versions you’re running, an easy way to check is to create a php file in the root of your website (any filename will do as long as it ends in .php, but for the sake of demonstration I’ll call mine phpinfo.php) – then add the following single line of code to the file:

class="wp_syntax"> class="code">
<?php phpinfo();?>

Save, and access the file using your browser. Directly at the top will be a line saying which version of php you have, and if you do a text search for “Client API version”, you’ll see what version of MySQL you have too.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/phpversion.jpg?54167">

Ready To Upgrade?

Having checked the minimum requirements, take a full backup of your files and database. I described href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/backup-website-ssh-command-line/">how to do this via the command line before, or you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-methods-storing-wordpress-blog-backups/">try the non-techie method if you don’t have SSH access.

Bear in mind that while the majority of plugins generally don’t have an issue, if you’re using something particularly hardcore such as caching or major functionality changes then you may run into some problems. In that case your only option is to either restore from a backup or find alternative plugins. Make sure all of your plugins are up to date before proceeding with the core WordPress update through the admin panel.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wordpress-updateme.jpg?54167">

What Do To If Things Go Wrong

The first step is to try a manual installation. Download a fresh copy of the files from href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress.org and re-upload everything to your FTP server EXCEPT wp-content. If you overwrite your wp-content folder, all your uploads and pictures etc will be gone, as I found out once. Be careful! Once fully uploaded, manually visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php to run the upgrade process manually on the database.

If you’ve upgraded but you’re getting errors or a blank screen, it may be a particular plugin. Rename your plugins folder to temporarily deactivate them all, then move them back one by one to find the culprit.

So, What’s New?

Speed!

For those of us with larger sites, speed is a major issue. 3.2 brings a ton of speed improvements, most notably in the admin side of things where you’ll find yourself zipping around now. The core code has been updated too, removing unnecessary functions and optimising database queries.

Distraction Free Writing

Wow – this is actually really cool. When using the visual editor to write your post, there’s a new button on the toolbar. Click that to hide all interface elements, and jump straight into a WriteRoom-esque fullscreen distraction-free UI.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/fullscreen-button.jpg?54167">

Moving the mouse will cause a minimal set of buttons to display as well as the exit fullscreen, but they soon fade to this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/distraction-free-writing.jpg?54167">

Beautiful… and combined with the speed improvements I think this will really cause a lot of people to stop writing offline in tools such as Windows Live Writer. Fullscreen mode also works in HTML view, but the button the toolbar is labelled as simply “fullscreen”, so it’s easier to find.

New Default Theme

Twenty-Eleven is the new included theme, and it’s simple incredible. Built from the ground up to take advantage of HTML5, it now offers far more customisation than ever before, including options such as layout. It’s going to set new standards in theme design and puts many premium templates even to shame. Let’s have a closer look.

Post Formats

Built into the theme are now Tumblr-like post format options – asides, links, quotes, gallery. I haven’t had time to explore these formats in much depth, but for many these are going to be the highlight of the new theme I think.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twenty-eleven-dark.jpg?54167">

Layout & Style Options

Choose between either light or dark, sidebar on left or right or none at all, and change the default link color. You can get a dramatically unique look in seconds. The underlying look and feel of the theme is fantastically clean and tidy.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/theme-options.jpg?54167">

Random Headers

Upload more than one file to use as a header and you’ll now be able to rotate through them randomly, which is nice.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/random-images-header.jpg?54167">

For some rather odd reason, they decided to remove the sidebar from single post pages, a rather obvious oversight but one that is easily fixed by downloading a href="http://futurewebblog.com/add-sidebar-support-posts-twenty-eleven-theme/">slightly modified child theme from here.

Better Admin Toolbar

It was an interesting feature added in version 3, but to be honest I never saw much point to the admin bar. Thankfully, it’s been updated with lots more useful links on the Add New menu, so I might re-enable it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/better-admin-bar.jpg?54167">

Should You Upgrade?

The underlying code in WordPress 3.2 has been cleaned up so that not only the backend is faster but core functions too, so for that alone it’s worth upgrading. The new default theme is such a vast improvement that hopefully it’ll prevent some of the cookie-cutter default installs I see so many of when people just can’t be bothered to customise their blog at all.

That’s all for today – if you have problems upgrading then let us know in the comments or crowd source your problem to the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/">tech support community part of MakeUseOf. class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/flipboard-1.jpg?54167" alt="" />RSS feed apps for the iPad are almost a dime a dozen, but only a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-free-rss-readers-ipad/">few top ranking ones have the magazine style quality and features of  class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8">Flipboard, the first in its category. Last week Flipboard rolled out a slew of upgrade features, a few not found in the RSS apps of its three top competitors -  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pulse-free-visual-display-rss-news-reader-ipad/">Pulse, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feedly-mobile-news-google-reader-feeds-stylish-app-ios-android/">Feedly, and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">Zite.

    Flipboard CEO, Mike McCue said on TechCrunchTV that the upgraded Flipboard has been downloaded by over 2.5 million users.

    New Features

    The 1.5 version of Flipboard includes faster red ribbon access to all your social networks, favorite sections, and a wide range of pre-selected feeds to choose among, from news and business to sports and science. You can actually now view the content of feeds without adding them to your own list.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0509.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="IMG 0509" width="435" height="580" />

    You can do a search for people, publications, websites, or topics such as National Geographic, Design or Ashton Kutcher. You can add MakeUseOf simply by tapping on the red ribbon in the upper-right side of the screen and typing, “makeuseof.com” in the search field.  Select the MUO feed and if you like, add it to your Flipboard.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0510.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="IMG 0510" width="580" height="208" />

    A few long awaited features of the new Flipboard include the ability to favor open articles, as well the ability to save articles to your Instapaper account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_0514.png?54167" border="0" alt="IMG 0514" width="501" height="365" />

    Since the debut of Flipboard last year, the 1.5 update is faster and more streamlined, but with the same magazine style feel of flipping pages and reading content. Plus now you can use Flipboard to connect with your contacts on Twitter and Facebook, including LinkendIn integration for additional social sharing and updating.

    Mike McCue told TechCrunch that the iPhone version of Flipboard is also in the works and will be coming out soon.

    Try New Firefox Features Before Anyone Else With Firefox Nightly & Other Channels

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-75.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" />Mozilla has recently been trying to up its game in the browser war, and step up the innovation. They realized they needed to get new features to end users more quickly, so to do this, they set up several new “channels”. If names like Firefox Nightly, Aurora and Beta seem confusing, hopefully this post will help set things right.

    In brief, these are the channels:

    • Stable: For users who just need a stable browser that works.
    • Beta: This channel is “close to stable”, but not really stable yet. By using the Beta channel, you’re helping Mozilla test new features.
    • Aurora: The “less than stable” channel; you’re approaching cutting-edge territory here, and taking an active part in the development effort.
    • Nightly: Fresh from the oven, may unexpectedly break at any time. This is as bleeding-edge as it gets.

    Now let’s see how you can get each version, and learn a bit about switching channels.

    Stable Builds

    This is the build you can get right off href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/?from=getfirefox">Get Firefox. Simply press the big green button, and the safest version of Firefox will be downloaded to your computer. At the time of this writing, this is version 4.0.1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-76.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="580" height="350" />

    Beta & Aurora

    To start using the Beta and Aurora builds, go to the href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/">Firefox Channels homepage and take your pick:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-81.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="580" height="229" />

    Note where it says “Coming Soon!” under the Beta version — we’ll be revisiting this point. At this time, the only “testing” build you can get from this page is the Aurora build. But it turns out that from within Aurora, you can switch between the Stable, Beta and Aurora channels. Just click the menu button, go to Help > About Aurora, and click the Change link shown in the screenshot:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-78.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="375" height="191" />

    You will then be taken to a channel selection screen with a dropdown and an explanation for each of the channels:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-79.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="374" height="262" />

    I was able to join the Beta channel from this screen. I switched to “Beta” and clicked Apply and Update. Firefox then fetched a 17.2MB download and smoothly switched to the Beta channel:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-80.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="384" height="184" />

    This goes to show that even Mozilla might be slightly confused by its own release cycle. How come you can switch to Beta from within Aurora, but can’t download the Beta from the channels page, where it tells you it is “coming soon”?

    Nightly Builds

    If using Aurora feels a bit tame, you can kick things up a notch and start using the Nightly builds. To download the installer, go href="http://nightly.mozilla.org/">here and grab the installer for your platform. Note the decidedly less flashy interface here:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-82.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="385" height="327" />

    Once installed, the Firefox nightly build sets up a shortcut in your Start menu simply called “Nightly“. At the time of this writing, the nightly build was version 6.0a1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-83.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="341" height="183" />

    Note that even though this is a more advanced build than Aurora, it does not have a built-in channel switcher. It installs itself alongside Aurora/Beta and the stable version. This means you can be testing or using three different versions of Firefox at the same time, on the same computer.

    Unlike Chrome, where you can href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-chrome-canary-technology-explained">have Canary and “regular” Chrome running at the same time, you can only have a single Firefox build running at any one time on your computer. So if you’ve got an open browsing session in Nightly and click the Aurora shortcut on your Start menu, you’ll simply get a new Firefox Nightly window. Confusing, I know.

    A Word of Warning

    For some strange reason, both the Nightly and Beta assume you want them to act as the default browser for your computer. That means that during the installation process, you’re going to have to consciously look for the “set as default” step and opt out of making an experimental, unstable browser your default browser. An interesting design choice by Mozilla, no doubt.

    In Closing

    Trying out new and experimental software builds isn’t always comfortable, and it sure can get confusing. But Mozilla is a true community effort, and if you believe in its core mission, this can be a nice way to participate and contribute towards making Firefox a faster, more stable browser.  Let us know in the comments if you use one of the test versions and how it works out for you. />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-79.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="374" height="262" />

    I was able to join the Beta channel from this screen. I switched to “Beta” and clicked Apply and Update. Firefox then fetched a 17.2MB download and smoothly switched to the Beta channel:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-80.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="384" height="184" />

Note the decidedly less flashy interface here:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-82.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="385" height="327" />

    Once installed, the Firefox nightly build sets up a shortcut in your Start menu simply called “Nightly“. At the time of this writing, the nightly build was version 6.0a1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-83.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="341" height="183" />

At the time of this writing, this is version 4.0.1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-76.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="580" height="350" />

    Beta & Aurora

    To start using the Beta and Aurora builds, go to the href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/">Firefox Channels homepage and take your pick:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-81.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="580" height="229" />

    Note where it says “Coming Soon!” under the Beta version — we’ll be revisiting this point. At this time, the only “testing” build you can get from this page is the Aurora build. But it turns out that from within Aurora, you can switch between the Stable, Beta and Aurora channels. Just click the menu button, go to Help > About Aurora, and click the Change link shown in the screenshot:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-78.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="375" height="191" />

    You will then be taken to a channel selection screen with a dropdown and an explanation for each of the channels:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-79.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="374" height="262" />

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-80.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="384" height="184" />

Note the decidedly less flashy interface here:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-82.jpg" alt="firefox nightly update" width="385" height="327" />

    Once installed, the Firefox nightly build sets up a shortcut in your Start menu simply called “Nightly“. At the time of this writing, the nightly build was version 6.0a1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-83.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="341" height="183" />

At the time of this writing, this is version 4.0.1:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-76.jpg" alt="firefox nightly" width="580" height="350" />

    Beta & Aurora

    To start using the Beta and Aurora builds, go to the href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/">Firefox Channels homepage and take your pick:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-81.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="580" height="229" />

    Note where it says “Coming Soon!” under the Beta version — we’ll be revisiting this point. At this time, the only “testing” build you can get from this page is the Aurora build. But it turns out that from within Aurora, you can switch between the Stable, Beta and Aurora channels. Just click the menu button, go to Help > About Aurora, and click the Change link shown in the screenshot:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-78.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="375" height="191" />

    You will then be taken to a channel selection screen with a dropdown and an explanation for each of the channels:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/image-79.jpg" alt="firefox nightly tester tools" width="374" height="262" />

    I was able to join the Beta channel from this screen. I switched to “Beta” and clicked Apply and Update. Firefox then fetched a 17.2MB download and smoothly switched to the Beta channel:

    3 Free Photo Customization Websites With The Best Features

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto07.png" alt="photo customizing sites" />If we were to be judged by the amount of photos we take on a regular basis, most people would qualify as photographers. Today, almost everyone owns a digital camera, either as part of a mobile phone or in the form of a dedicated device. Taking pictures has become something everybody can do. Anytime. Anywhere.

    Taking lots of pictures of course doesn’t mean they are any good. Professional photographers know that often the real work is done in post-processing. While the goal of every photographer is to take the perfect snapshot that requires zero editing, the manifold tools that are available can also be a source of great entertainment for the hobby picture takers. Not only can you improve your photos by adjusting the frame, correcting blemishes, or changing the color, you can also add cool effects and fun elements.

    title="Aviary" href="http://www.aviary.com/">Aviary

    In case you were hoping to find an online alternative to Photoshop…voilà, you have just found it! Aviary currently is the most powerful image editor suite on the net. Moreover, it is very easy and intuitive to use. Advanced features are available through separate tools, which helps to keep the option madness at bay. Best of all, you can start customizing your photos right away, signing up is not required.

    It all starts with a photo. To start customizing with the basic editor on the front page, simply upload your photo or paste the URL via the respective button in the top right. In the next step you can choose from several great features for customizing photos, for example whiten (teeth), red-eye (removal), blemish (correction), resize, and sharpen.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto01.png" border="0" alt="photo customizing sites" />

    If you want to make more advanced changes, scroll down and load one of the advanced creative tools

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto02.png" border="0" alt="photo customization site" />

    For a more detailed review of Aviary’s advanced creative tools, check out this MakeUseOf article: title="Edit Images Online with The Aviary Photo Editor Suite" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/edit-images-online-with-the-aviary-web-suite/">Edit Images Online with The Aviary Photo Editor Suite. Also check out title="Feather" href="http://www.aviary.com/html5">Feather, Aviary’s HTML5 photo editor and our review about it: title="Feather – A Light, Simple But Powerful HTML5-Based Online Photo Editor" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/feather-light-simple-powerful-html5based-online-photo-editor/">Feather – A Light, Simple But Powerful HTML5-Based Online Photo Editor.

    An alternative to the Aviary suite is title="Pixlr" href="http://pixlr.com">Pixlr, which was reviewed in detail here: title="Easy & Powerful Online Image Editing With Pixlr" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easy-and-powerful-image-editing-with-pixlr/">Easy & Powerful Online Image Editing With Pixlr.

    href="http://fotoflexer.com">FotoFlexer

    If you’re looking for something that has more out of the box effects to customize your photos with, have a look at FotoFlexer. It may not make much an impression at first sight. Once you’re in, however, you will notice what a great tool it is! No signup is required, there’s a simple interface, it’s easy to use, and it’s packed with features.

    You can start by uploading a photo from your hard drive or edit photos from a selection of photo customizing sites, including Flickr, Facebook, or Picasa. For this demonstration, I connected FotoFlexer to my Flickr account.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto03.png" border="0" alt="photo customization site" />

    After you select a picture, the image editor loads and you can start having fun. You can choose from several different tabs, including a basic editor, effects, layers, and geeky stuff, meaning more advanced editing.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto04.png" border="0" alt="photo customization site" />

    href="http://www.befunky.com">BeFunky

    BeFunky is one of these tools that look super simplistic at first sight, but then turn out to offer way more than expected. The root to this first impression is the minimalistic, almost oversimplified interface. What hides behind it, however, is a range of options and a fast engine that allows almost instant changes.

    Pictures can be uploaded, downloaded, printed, or shared via the respective buttons in the top right. What they hide is that you can connect to several networks to collect or spread your images. Via the respective buttons in the top left you can switch between the edit and create mode. Editing refers to basic image editing, i.e. cropping, resizing, adjusting color etc. Creating is everything else, i.e. adding effects, frames, text, and other goodies. Each selection changes the available features in the sidebar.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto05.png" border="0" alt="photo customization website" />

    The only drag I found with BeFunky is that you are constantly reminded that there is a pay version by the ‘Upgrade Now’ button in the bottom right and the many ‘Premium Effects’ that are only available with the upgrade. While there are free items for every single of the dozens of effect categories, it’s a nagging reminder that you could get access to even more.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/CustomizePhoto06.png" border="0" alt="photo customizing sites" />

    A tool that looked promising, but turned out to be very slow was title="Picture2Life" href="http://www.picture2life.com">Picture2Life. Creating a free account is optional and it offers a huge amount of quick fixes, effects, and adjustments. Unfortunately, the interface is not as intuitive as that of other tools and it takes forever to make changes. If you are looking for the tool with the most features though, do give it a spin!

    If you’re willing to register to access a tool that provides many one-click effects, try out title="flauntR" href="http://www.flauntr.com">flauntR. We have reviewed the tool in this article: title="FlauntR – A Killer Online Image Editing Tool" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/flauntr-a-killer-online-image-editing-tool/">FlauntR – A Killer Online Image Editing Tool.

    With so many great tools available online, do we really still need software for customizing photos? What photo customizing sites do you prefer to use?

    Features That May Make You Want To Start Using Windows Live Messenger

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/livemessenger2.jpg" alt="windows live messenger" />If you are an avid user of IM messaging systems, then you will know that here at MakeUseOf, we are constantly in search of new IM apps, as well as the latest advancements in the field of messengers. Shankar’s article of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tools-to-use-with-your-instant-messenger/">15 IM tools is a good example of that.

    For years, MSN Messenger was a well known and popular chat program a lot of folks used. With the advent of GTalk, Yahoo IM, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-reasons-online-meebo-instant-messenger/">Meebo, Digsby, Trillian, and so many other chat programs, MSN really started falling by the wayside. In order to rebrand the IM app (along with grouping other social network services under the one umbrella), the app was renamed “Windows Live Messenger” and packaged along with other Windows Live apps.

    id="more-67630"> /> Last year Jack did an awesome job covering a number of the best features href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-cool-tips-tricks-in-windows-live-msn-messenger/">Windows Live Messenger has to offer. In this article, I’d like to cover some some additional features, and ways you can use Live Messenger to quickly transfer photos and other files to your friend’s computer.

    Integrating Windows Messenger With Everything

    One of the most annoying things about most of the older, original IM applications like Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger is the fact that they are so isolated from other social networks where your friends hang out. This is gradually changing as these older IM apps have to compete with newer IM systems like Meebo or Yoomo that integrate multiple IM accounts into one client.

    On Windows Messenger, you can now import contacts from your external social networks by clicking on the “Add Contact” icon and selecting “Add people from other services…

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67631" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live1.jpg" alt="windows live messenger" width="322" height="313" />

    You can import contacts from all of your top social networks and email systems like Facebook, LinkedIn, Outlook, AOL Mail and even your Gmail account.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67632" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live2.jpg" alt="msn live messenger" width="519" height="540" />

    MSN Messenger will sort through the email addresses of your contacts and try to determine whether or not these people are already in the Windows Live system. You can select which people you want to connect with inside Windows Live Messenger, and the system will send a mass invite out to those friends.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67633" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live3.jpg" alt="msn live messenger" width="559" height="402" />

    Sending Files & Photos On MSN Messenger

    Once you open up a chat with one of your online contacts, at any point during the chat, you can send over a file by clicking on “Files” and “Send a file or photo…

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live4.jpg" alt="msn live messenger" width="475" height="414" />

    The file appears embedded right inside the chat itself. If it’s a photo you’re sending, Windows Messenger will now actually display a thumbnail image of the photo. A request is sent to your friend to accept the file transfer. Once they accept, you’ll see the status bar showing the transfer taking place.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live4b.jpg" alt="messenger live" width="478" height="414" />

    As you can see, sending and receiving files in Live Messenger is pretty straightforward. However there are a few things you should set up before you start receiving files from friends. Click on Tools, Options, File Transfer to access the file transfer properties.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live5.jpg" alt="messenger live" width="526" height="372" />

    Here you can set up how incoming files you receive from friends are automatically handled. You can save incoming files to a specific folder, enable automatic anti-virus scanning of those files using whatever software you prefer (or install Windows Live OneCare).

    Windows Live For Mobile

    If you want to send and receive files and photos from your mobile device, you can enable Windows Live for Mobile on your account by clicking on “Phone” and the “Mobile Settings” button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live6.jpg" alt="messenger live" width="528" height="341" />

    Once you’ve set up Windows Live for Mobile, you can automatically share pictures that you take on your phone, and you can access the whole range of mobile apps now available on Windows Live Mobile.

    Additional Features Available On Live Messenger

    There are also a whole range of cool things you can do with Live Messenger – some have been part of the software for a while and others are somewhat new.

    If you read my article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-reasons-msn-gaming-zone">the MSN Gaming Zone, then you will know that Microsoft is trying to compete in the online gaming industry. One way it is doing that is by integrating online games into the Live Messenger. All you have to do is click “Games” at the top of the chat window and available games you can play with your chat partner will appear on the left.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67640" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live8.jpg" alt="" width="563" height="484" />

    Another useful feature that Jack mentioned in his article is the Request Remote Assistance feature. Although I do have to report that when I tested this feature with our writer Dave, we found that the remote access component is flaky at best. It actually sent both of us offline and didn’t work. So, this feature may or may not work for you – but it seems Microsoft has a bit more work to do to get this working for everyone.

    Another little feature you might not have realized exists in Live Messenger is the little “record” icon at the bottom of the chat next to the emoticons. You can quickly record yourself and send the clip over the chat session to your friend. This is useful for when you’re not really interested in an audio chat, but you did want to send a clip of yourself doing something like singing.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-67643" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/live11.jpg" alt="windows live messenger" width="379" height="193" />

    Whether or not you like Microsoft, it seems that Windows Live Messenger, formerly MSN Messenger, will probably be around for a long time. It does seem that Microsoft is continually improving on the IM software by adding some additional, pretty cool features like those listed above. However, whether it will be able to fully compete in the future with all of the new, jazzy IM clients coming out remains to be seen.

    Do you find these features useful? What other things do you think Microsoft should do to improve their IM client? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. />

    A Review Of The New Features Included In Windows Media Player 12

    style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/0-wmp12-intro.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="216" />Are you a fan of Windows Media Player? Aside from the other href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-media-players-for-windows/">top media players for Windows, a lot of Windows users still use it because it comes pre-installed and has most (if not all) of the features you would look for in a standalone media player.

    As Saikat href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-tips-to-enrich-your-entertainment-with-windows-media-player-11/">pointed out a while back, Windows Media Player 11 had a lot of shortcuts, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-windows-media-player-plugins/">plugins, and nifty features to make your experience more enjoyable. But what does Windows Media Player 12 have to offer? In this new release of Windows’ popular media player program, you’ll see improvements in supported formats and streaming capabilities, new playback modes, and more.

    id="more-65931"> /> In this article, I’m going to show you what’s new in this edition of WMP, so if you’re a Windows 7 user now’s the time to consider upgrading.

    What’s New Inside Windows Media Player 12?

    Designed by media lovers, for media lovers. Windows Media Player 12–available only in Windows 7–plays more music and video than ever…

    As I stated earlier, if you’re a fan of href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player">Windows Media Player, you should enjoys the changes made to the latest version.

    The first thing you might want to know is that Windows Media Player 12 plays more types of media than its predecessors. Aside from supporting most AVI, DivX, MOV, and Xvid files, WMP 12 has built-in support for many popular audio and video formats, including 3GP, AAC, AVCHD, MPEG-4, WMV, and WMA. What does this mean for Windows 7 users? No need to worry about installing codecs!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1428.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="322" />

    Aside from having the ability to play more file types, you can now play those files in more places as well. Windows’ new “Play To” feature allows you to stream music and video to other PCs running Windows 7, as well as other compatible devices around your home.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1424.png" alt="" width="270" height="364" />

    To use href="http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/5/7/571420b3-57b5-4617-9c1e-d8880f46806c/571420b3-57b5-4617-9c1e-d8880f46806c.wmv">Play To, just righ-click the tracks you want to play from your library, or add them to your WMP 12 playlist, and click Play To. This feature makes it easy to stream music, video, and photos from your computer to other PCs, TVs, or stereos on your home network. For example, you can stream music from your PC to your home entertainment system or stream slide shows/videos to your TV.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/playto.jpg" alt="" width="478" height="401" />

    Likewise, href="http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/d/4/d44c5aa6-0ab1-4826-8c16-4bedcdd96ab7/d44c5aa6-0ab1-4826-8c16-4bedcdd96ab7.wmv">Remote Media Streaming allows you to tap into your WMP 12 library over the Internet and enjoy your files while you’re away from home.

    To use Remote Media Streaming, both computers must be running Windows 7. Windows Media Player will walk you through the steps to turn it on, which will require you to associate both PCs with an online ID, like a Windows Live email address. Once you’re all set up, however, then you can connect to your library from afar.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-18_1430.png" alt="" width="350" height="277" />

    Other features of note include the new Now Playing mode, while being very minimalistic, gives you a new taskbar thumbnail with playback controls, smarter DVD playback, 15-second song previews, and jump lists for fast access to your favorite media.

    Conclusion

    If you haven’t upgraded to Windows Media Player 12 just yet, you can download the application href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player">here. You can see most of these features in this href="http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows%207/main/4/1/41793244-4077-4253-b74c-969caf240ab5/41793244-4077-4253-b74c-969caf240ab5.wmv">video walkthough.

    Let’s hope this article has helped you to get fully updated on what’s happening inside Windows Media Player 12. Now you can get back to watching movies, listening to tunes, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-youtube-video-windows-media-player/">downloading YouTube videos, and all that good stuff. I’m a fan of WMP 12 and will continue to experiment with it to see what else it lets me do. Stay tuned!
