A Guide To Setting Up Your Own Podcast Website & Feed Using WordPress & Podpress

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/featured-podcasting.png" alt="make your own podcast" />I recently had the opportunity to become part of a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/podcast">podcast which I’m sure you’ll hear about soon enough – and it’s all fairly new ground for me. As the only one with enough bandwidth to host, and clearly the most experienced of the group in WordPress ninja-ship, I also took it upon myself to setup the necessary protocols that make an actual podcast, as opposed to being just audio files posted on a blog.

Thankfully, there’s a fantastic, free plugin for WordPress that handles the difficult bits, and I was able to get the show on the road within an hour of buying a domain.

What Is A Podcast, Technically Speaking?

A podcast is a special extended form of RSS, or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-feeds-work-simple-terms-technology-explained/">really simple syndication. Regular RSS just provides HTML content, as well as some additional meta-data such as preview image, a title, a date etc. A podcast feed on the other hand also includes links to the audio/video files in a way that special podcast clients – such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/itunes/">iTunes – can understand.

When a podcast feed is updated, the client will prompt you or automatically download the associated media. iTunes also specifies some additional meta-data fields such as description, which it uses to populate the information in the iTunes podcast directory.

Hosting

First off, you need to think separately about the title="The Various Forms Of Website Hosting Explained [Technology Explained]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/website-hosting-technology-explained/">hosting of the actual podcast media files – typically anywhere from 5MB (10 minutes of audio) to 500MB (video) – to the hosting of the podcast feed.

Today I’ll only be discussing self-hosting both the files themselves and the website used to make the podcast feed, but if you have a particular bandwidth-limited webhost then you may need to consider placing your files on a low-cost host such as title="4 Great Uses For Amazon’s S3 Web Services" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-great-amazons-s3-web-services/">Amazon s3. Either will function the same, but you will need to consider this beforehand. While the bandwidth required to access the feed will be no more than a regular blog, the bandwidth needed for 1,000 people downloading your 100MB podcast every week can rapidly escalate.

An alternative solution is to use a low-cost feed/file host combination, such as href="http://www.libsyn.com">libsyn. The problem with using a hosted service is the same as using a hosted blogging service – if you become popular and need to migrate to your own domain, things can become difficult and you may end up losing listeners in the process.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/libsyn.png" alt="make your own podcast" width="580" height="384" />

On the other hand, many all-in-one hosted solutions offer access to their automated advertising insertion systems. I can’t testify as to the profitability of these, but I assume it’s much the same rules as Adsense – the more downloads you get, the more money you can make. In my opinion, monetization should never be your primary goal on any web project – start off making great content, and only consider monetization once you’ve gained traction.

To clarify a common misconception – the iTunes store will not host your podcast for you, nor will they set up any of the necessary meta-data needed in your feed. This is entirely your responsibility to set up. For podcasts, the iTunes store functions in a similar fashion to a link directory. With the feed correctly set up, you submit the address, and wait for approval. That’s it. You need to provide the file hosting, and the podcast feed hosting.

Using WordPress & Podpress

So assuming you’re going to host your own files on either your own web server or Amazon s3, the next step is to set up a website or front-end to manage the podcast feed, again on your own server, for which we’ll be using the world’s best CMS – href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/wordpress">WordPress. I strongly suggest you get your own specific domain for the podcast too – we got ours for $6 with a coupon at GoDaddy – and that’ll save a world of hassle later on.

A standard WordPress installation won’t do podcasting out of the box, and for this we’ll install a plugin called href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/podpress/">podPress - search for it from the Add Plugin menu option within WordPress.

Basic iTunes meta-data is automatically added to your site feed now. Go to the podPress->Feed/iTunes Settings to customise this with your own:

  • summary
  • preview image (this is what people will see in the store)
  • owner
  • subtitle
  • keywords
  • explicit tag

You’re also able to set up additional feeds, but I won’t go into detail with them here as the setup is significantly more complicated. These can be used if you plan on releasing different formats – for example, keeping the main feed as a plain MP3, or also providing a video feed.

Adding Your First Podcast

Releasing a new episode is basically as simple as creating a new post and associating the relevant media file. You can’t actually upload the podcast on most hosts, due to the upload file size limit which is usually about 2MB. You’ll need to open an FTP connection, create a folder for your podcasts, and enter the URL manually on the post screen in the new podPress section.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/podpress-media-new-post.png" alt="how to create your own podcast" width="580" height="313" />

Anything else you write in the post content area will become the “show notes” and description for iTunes.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/description.png" alt="how to create your own podcast" width="580" height="69" />

Submitting To The iTunes Store

Before you submit, make sure you’ve changed all the defaults from the podPress settings screen, and be sure to have a feed image set, as well as accurately marking if the feed is explicit or not.

You’ll need an iTunes account to submit the podcast. Just navigate to the iTunes Store -> Podcasts section from iTunes, and click Submit a Podcast in the top right. Paste in the feed address of your blog, and step through the wizard. There’s a 2-3 day wait time to be approved, and after that the feed will update daily (so you may not see your new episode immediately in the iTunes directory).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/submit.png" alt="make your own podcast" width="272" height="253" />

I understand Dave is in the process of writing a full guide on the topic of podcasting, so if you’re unsure of the process or you don’t to host it yourself, wait for that in a few months. Comments welcome, or questions if you’re having problems as I’ll try to help as best as I can. If you need more help on blogging in general with WordPress, may I suggest href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/set-up-your-blog-with-wordpress-the-ultimate-guide">my own fantastic free guide.

View Your Facebook Feed In Real-Time On Your Desktop With FlipToast

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/0_fliptoast_intro.jpg" alt="facebook client" />I, like many others I know, spend an obnoxious amount of time on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook. It’s simple math, really. All my friends hang out on Facebook, along with their likes and dislikes, discussions about current events and the latest news, and things like status updates and pictures. Throw in things like addictive games and brand pages centered around everything I have an interest in and, yeah, that equals a lot of time spent on Facebook.

And when I say on Facebook, I mean on Facebook, because let’s face it, there isn’t a great desktop alternative out there….or is there? In this article, I’m going to show you FlipToast, which, as strange as the name may be, is actually a decent desktop app for Facebook.

What Is FlipToast?

href="http://www.fliptoast.com/">FlipToast is a dynamic Facebook href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/desktop-client/">desktop client for Windows and Mac that offers a quick and easy way to stay connected with your Facebook friends. Unlike other clients that are out there, FlipToast provides essential Facebook user interface elements, like live notifications and chat functionality.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/1_fliptoast.jpg" alt="facebook client" width="471" height="649" />

It is designed to notify you about everything related to or going on with your Facebook profile, and it gives you updates in real-time. Whether a friend comments on your Facebook status, tags you in a photo, or adds you to an album, you’ll be updated.

FlipToast is also designed to be distraction-free. You can keep the sidebar and corresponding chat window in any corner of the screen to have for reference while completing other tasks. With the chat functionality, you have the option of going offline at anytime.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2_fliptoast.jpg" alt="facebook desktop client applications" width="300" height="379" />

The photo sharing and uploading feature is also really cool. All you have to do to share a photo on Facebook with FlipToast is drag and drop it onto the application, then you can specify what album information you would like to input and begin uploading.

Also, FlipToast presents an easy way to view your news feed, as all of your recent updates are displayed just as they would be from Facebook itself.

The short video below will further illustrate the usefulness of FlipToast as a desktop client:

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LSLJZQjmMSE?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LSLJZQjmMSE?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

How To Use FlipToast

After you href="http://http://www.fliptoast.com/download/Social-Networking/FlipToast">install FlipToast, it will sit in your system tray, allowing you to bring up the sidebar, stop and start the display of desktop notifications, and do things like update your status, post photos, and more.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/3_fliptoast.png" alt="facebook client" width="491" height="386" />

The sidebar, which I said you could move around, will be on the right side of the screen by default. You can change its position in the settings, however. The Facebook Chat option will also be disabled by default, but you can simply click it to enable chat functionality and view your online friends.

If you’ve got something important that you’re working on, like, say, an article for your blog (wink, wink), you can turn live notifications off to temporarily stop getting messages. You can also shorten the notification fade out time to make messages distraction free.

Conclusion

FlipToast is definitely the best desktop Facebook client that I’ve seen. You can do a lot with it that other clients don’t allow and being able to access your Facebook chat alone is a great feature. If you spend a lot of time on Facebook and would like to take those interactions away from your browser for a while, I recommend you check out FlipToast. What do you think of it? />

    Convert Your Free Yahoo Email To An RSS Feed With YmailFeed

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/blueglobe.jpg" alt="email to rss" />One of the issues I’ve always had with my free Yahoo email account is the fact that it’s so difficult to deal with it anywhere outside of the online Yahoo Mail system itself. There aren’t very many online email systems that will let you extract email from your Yahoo account as easily as you can get it from your Gmail account. This is because, unlike with Google Mail, a free Yahoo Mail account does not include free POP access.

    Recently, I wrote a review of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-bandit-feed-online/">RSS Bandit, a very cool feed reader with the ability to pull in email feeds from Gmail accounts. It doesn’t use POP access, instead it utilizes the authenticated Atom feed that Google provides to all Gmail users. This is awesome, but once again it made me regret ever signing up for a free Yahoo account, because it’s once again left out in the cold. No matter what, I always have to go back to the online Yahoo email system to check those emails. In a Web 2.0 world, Yahoo Mail feels so disconnected from everything.

    id="more-52473"> /> After writing the RSS Bandit article, I realized that if there’s some way I could convert my free Yahoo email account into an RSS feed, I’d have an instant connection to that free email account without the need for a POP connection. It actually didn’t take very long to discover class="vt-p" href="http://ymailfeed.appspot.com/">YmailFeed, an awesome free service hosted on Google AppSpot (ironically) that lets you convert your free Yahoo email account into an RSS feed.

    Setting Up Your Yahoo Email RSS Feed

    The first thing you’ll need to do to set up your Yahoo Mail as an RSS feed is to visit YmailFeed, sign up for your free account, and then click on “Start the Process“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52474" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed1.jpg" alt="email to rss" width="569" height="426" />

    You’re then taken to your Yahoo account sign-in page. This is a legitimate Yahoo sign-in, it’s not a scam! YmailFeed is not collecting your login information, you simply need to log into your account so that the YmailFeed system can retrieve a unique key associated with your authentication.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52475" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed2.jpg" alt="email to rss" width="224" height="435" />

    This is similar to when you give external applications permission to access your Facebook account. Likewise, by logging into your Yahoo account, you are “approving” that YmailFeed can access your incoming email. To hammer this home, Yahoo requires that you sign off on this request, since you’re basically opening up your email account to a third-party app that is going to convert your incoming mail into a feed format.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52476" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed3.jpg" alt="forward email to rss" width="569" height="151" />

    Once you agree, your account is active and all new, unread email is converted into a feed. You can see a preview of that feed in the left window in your YmailFeed account. You have three important links at the bottom of the next screen, which is basically the feed for your free Yahoo email account. If that URL is ever compromised and falls into the wrong hands, just click on “Regenerate the Codes” and a new set of feed URLs is provided – the old ones will be disabled.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52477" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed4.jpg" alt="forward email to rss" width="548" height="419" />

    Three types of feeds links are provided, AutoDiscovery, a standard RSS Feed and an ATOM feed. Now that I’m using RSS Bandit, which can handle AutoDiscovery, I just initiate a new feed and add the feed under my existing email group. The feed shows up under “Feed Details” just like any other regular RSS feed.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52482" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed51.jpg" alt="forward email to rss" width="519" height="289" />

    The way RSS Bandit handles it when you click on the email itself is that it opens up a direct link to Yahoo Mail within the lower content panel. Another cool way to make use of your Yahoo feed is by clicking that little “Netvibes” link on the YmailFeed page with your feed URLs. In just two clicks, you can add an awesome Yahoo mail widget to your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-life-completely-online-netvibes/">Netvibes account.

    Getting Yahoo Mail loaded into my private Netvibes dashboard is something that I haven’t been able to get working for a long time, but now with YmailFeed, it works like a charm.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52479" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed6.jpg" alt="convert email to rss" width="401" height="373" />

    If you just want to get your most recent Yahoo mail in Google Reader, simply add the RSS Feed from your YmailFeed account and you’ve instantly connected Google Reader to your Yahoo inbox. Now, how cool is that?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yfeed7.jpg" alt="convert email to rss" width="496" height="439" />

    In fact, having your free Yahoo inbox as an RSS feed like this opens up a whole world of possibilities. You could install the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-intelligent-online-news-filter-greatnews/">GreatNews RSS Filter and use it to analyze all incoming Gmail and Yahoo email and send you alerts. Rather than setting up filters in all of your email accounts, you can process all incoming email in one place.

    Create An Instant Mobile Website From Your RSS Feed With WINKSite

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/mobiledevice.jpg" alt="create a mobile website" width="174" height="240" />One aspect of owning a website or a blog that few people think about is offering mobile content. The problem with forgetting about the mobile community is that mobile is the trend of the Internet. More people are checking Facebook, reading and responding to emails, and yes – reading their favorite websites right from their mobile phones.

    In 2008, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/browsing-web-on-your-mobile-phone/">Aibek observed how quickly the mobile Internet was taking off. If you are looking to capture potential visitors wherever they are, then offering mobile content is the way to do that.

    The problem is that not everyone has time to put together a mobile version of their website or blog.

    id="more-51986"> /> In 2010, MakeUseOf began work on offering readers an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/introducing-makeuseofs-redesigned-mobile-website/">updated mobile alternative. If you’re looking to offer mobile content, but you aren’t really comfortable or knowledgeable with the web coding required, an excellent option is to make use of class="vt-p" href="http://winksite.com">WINKSite, a free service that instantly converts your RSS feed into a high quality mobile site.

    Setting Up Your Mobile Site

    Getting your mobile website set up is ridiculously easy, and requires zero programming knowledge. All you have to do is sign up for a free WINKSite account, and then from the dashboard click on “Create a Site.” The next screen is where you’ll set up an individual mobile site.

    If you want to have your existing RSS feed used as the source for your mobile site content, make sure to click on “Blog” and fill in the link to the URL or your RSS feed URL.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52005" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink2.jpg" alt="create a mobile website" width="553" height="480" />

    style="text-align: left;">The beauty of this service is that you can personalize the mobile site to look however you like. Adjust the color scheme and upload your own header photo. In my case I’ve uploaded the FWC logo and centered it at the top of the mobile site.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52006" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink3.jpg" alt="create a mobile website" width="566" height="535" />

    style="text-align: left;">As you adjust the color and header settings, you can see a small preview of what the mobile site will look like in the right hand column. Once you’re done, you’ll end up on the dashboard page.  Another awesome thing about WINKSite is the fact that there are so many available content types that you can create for absolutely free and add to your mobile site. These are things like a forum, a chat room, surveys and much more.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52007" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink4.jpg" alt="make a mobile website" width="558" height="452" />

    Adding Content To Your Mobile Site

    style="text-align: left;">While you could just allow your RSS feed to update your new mobile website automatically, you have the option to add new, unique content for your mobile readers only. For example, create a survey that will be featured in the “survey channel” in the link listings. Setting  up a new survey requires that you fill out one simple form, and you’re done.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52008" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink5.jpg" alt="make a mobile website" width="433" height="469" />

    style="text-align: left;">You can even create an Ezine to go along with your blog! All setup and content creating takes place on the WINKSite website, and again the entire process makes use of a very simple wizard. You can create the entire e-zine by packaging up several articles within one e-zine issue.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52009" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink6.jpg" alt="make a mobile website" width="423" height="446" />

    style="text-align: left;">Fill out the forms to create each article within your e-zine, and you’re good to go. You can schedule the publication date at a later time, and you can make it so articles expire and are only visible publicly for a limited time.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52010" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink7.jpg" alt="" width="428" height="478" />

    style="text-align: left;">As though all of these add-ons weren’t enough, you can also add a Forum channel to your mobile site, where visitors can post comments and have conversations that pertain to the content on your mobile website. This is a great way to build community around the topics that you publish on your site.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52011" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink8.jpg" alt="" width="437" height="438" />

    style="text-align: left;">You can even issue “field reports” to your mobile blog by sending a text message or an email that gets posted to the site, depending how you configure it to work in your mobile blog Field Reports settings.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52012" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wink9.jpg" alt="" width="425" height="424" />

    style="text-align: left;">Once you’re finished setting everything up, check out your new mobile site by accessing the URL that was provided to you when you created the site. Here is what the main page of my FreeWritingCenter mobile site looks like on my Motorola Droid.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52013" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/device1.jpg" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    style="text-align: left;">Click on any of the story titles, and you get a view of the RSS feed content. The display will look differently here, depending on whether you post an excerpt or the entire article to the RSS feed. In my case, I post an excerpt, so the visitor will have to click the link to view the entire HTML website. To be more compatible for all mobile phones, it would probably be better to post the entire article to the feed so they can view it from within your mobile site.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-52014" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/device2.jpg" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    style="text-align: left;">Overall, WINKSite is a useful resource for generating a version of your website that will display properly on mobile devices. It works well, and configuration is so easy that anyone can do it. It would be nice to have a little bit more control over the formatting and to have the ability to insert HTML into some of the forms, but for the most part it performs a valuable service for website owners, and it does it well.

    style="text-align: left;">Do you have a mobile version of your website? If not, give WINKSite a shot and let us know what you think!

    Update Your Twitter Feed With What Music You’re Listening To [Mac]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twuneslogo.png" border="0" alt="post music on twitter" />If you’re an avid href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/itunes">iTunes player and href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/twitter">Twitter user, you no doubt like to occasionally share what you’re currently listening to with your contacts around the corner or across the world. But it’s a hassle to type out the title and the name of the artist of the song you’re currently listening to just to post music on twitter, let alone adding a link to the song from the iTunes Store.

    Well, a fairly new and free application and Twitter plug-in, class="vt-p" href="http://wops.dnsalias.net/wp_meta/twunes/">Twunes, developed by Stefan Wofrum, does all that tedious typing for you.

    I’ve seen and used a few similar href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/applescript">AppleScript programs that essentially do the same thing. But it looks like Twunes is the best at what it does.

    id="more-50833">

    How It Works

    You basically run Twunes like any other application. After downloading it, you are given a prompt to enter your Twitter username and password.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/usrcredentials1.jpg" border="0" alt="post music on twitter" width="508" height="451" />

    From that point, you‘re literally set up to tweet your currently playing song in iTunes. It’s really that simple.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twunes4.jpg" border="0" alt="post music on twitter" width="508" height="415" />

    Twunes sets up the tweet based on the preferences you set. Clicking the Twunes icon in the upper-left corner of the app’s interface sends the tweet to your Twitter account.

    Other Features

    However, there are some other great features you may want to take advantage of. You will find them by opening Twunes‘s Preferences.

    Although it would be nice if Twunes could be accessed from the Mac menu bar, you can nevertheless use it to control iTunes from within Twunes itself. The Twunes toolbar features the ability to play, stop, and pause iTunes.

    Another great feature is that Twunes will create a iTunes Store link for the song you’re currently playing, which of course saves you the trouble of copying and pasting that information in the tweet itself.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/ituneslink.jpg" border="0" alt="tweet music" width="580" height="426" />

    An added touch in the application enables you to select what type of prefix information you want for your tweet. You’re not stuck with “My iTunes plays…

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/prefix.png" border="0" alt="tweet music" width="357" height="140" />

    You may want to start with a popular hashtag, “ class="vt-p" href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=nowplaying">#nowplaying” that is used by many Twitter members. If you don’t want to use that hashtag as a prefix, you can also just select to include in the message itself by simply clicking the appropriate box.

    You can also cross-post Tweeted information to your Facebook account. Just check the “Include hashstag #fb” box in Preferences.

    Probably the most welcomed feature of Twunes is that you don’t need to have the interface showing in order to quickly send a tweet with the iTunes information. You can simply minimize the app and then right or Control click on the Twunes icon in your Dock.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tweetitfromdock.png" border="0" alt="tweet music" width="276" height="247" />

    From there, you simply select, “Tweet it!“, and go back to what you’re doing.

    Finally, if you want to see what other Twitter and Twunes users are playing, the developer includes a #Twunes hashtag in the iTunes tweet itself. Clicking on that hashtag of course will serve up all the other Twitter users using that same hashtag.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/twunes72.png" border="0" alt="twitter music" width="428" height="471" />

    Overall, Twunes is an awesome and very practical application to post music on twitter. It’s free, but it deserves a requested donation from the developer – or at least a great big thank you.

    MUO has covered some other class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/four-free-sites-to-share-your-music-on-twitter">Twitter class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-twitters-most-popular-music-with-the-hype-machine">music related applications.
