Ubuntu Restricted Extras: The First Thing You Should Install On Ubuntu [Linux]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/restricted-icon.png?323f2c" alt="things to install on ubuntu" />Install Java, Flash, every href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/codec/">codec you’ll ever need and much more, all at once. It’s heavily proprietary, but Ubuntu Restricted Extras is probably the first package you should install in Ubuntu.

Are you a new Ubuntu user? You might soon notice that a lot of things don’t work out of the box. You cannot listen to MP3 files or watch most movies; even DVDs. Browsing the web means doing so without Flash and Java, and certain websites don’t look right because the fonts are different. That’s where Ubuntu Restricted Extras comes in. A collection of software Ubuntu can’t legally bundle with Ubuntu, this package is easy to install and makes your computer capable of a staggering number of things. You’ll get Java, Flash, a staggering number of codecs, all the familiar default fonts from Windows and the ability to open href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/rar/">RAR files.

Windows users need special tools, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ninite-easily-install-all-your-favorite-free-apps-as-one-installation/">Ninite, to install this amount of software at once. Ubuntu users need only install one package from their repositories: Ubuntu Restricted Extras. This is probably the first thing you should do with any new installation of Ubuntu, so keep reading if you’re not familiar with it.

Installation

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ubuntu-restricted-extras-install.png?323f2c" alt="things to install on ubuntu" width="579" height="238" />

Installing software in Ubuntu couldn’t be easier. Just head to the Ubuntu Software Center, then search for the package you want to install.

The Software Center is a collection of programs you can install in Ubuntu. There are thousands of programs here for free, and an ever-growing collection of games and programs you can purchase. Like the App Store on mobile devices, this is the one-stop-shop for all Ubuntu software. It’s also where you find Ubuntu Restricted Extras. And you won’t need to look long: it’s one click away from the main page:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/restricted-frontpage.png?323f2c" alt="ubuntu suggestions" width="580" height="210" />

You’ll find it under “Top rated software.” Open it, then click the “Install” button. You’ll have to type your password and then you’ll be done.

Are you too lazy to open the program and find Restricted Extras? Fine; href="apt:ubuntu-restricted-extras">click here to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras. Done. Are you using Kubuntu or Xubuntu? Search for “Kubuntu Restricted Extras” or “Xubuntu Restricted Extras” instead.

Included Packages

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ubuntu-restricted-extras-packages.png?323f2c" alt="things to install on ubuntu" width="580" height="343" />

There’s nothing magic about Ubuntu Restricted Extras: it’s just a “meta-package”, which is a fancy way of saying it installs a number of other packages you could find separately in the Software Center if you wanted to. These packages, by name, are:

  • flashplugin-installer
  • gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
  • gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
  • gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
  • icedtea6-plugin
  • libavcodec-extra-52
  • libmp4v2-0
  • ttf-mscorefonts-installer
  • unrar

Not sure what these mean? The top one, “flashplugin-installer”, gets Adobe’s Flash installed on your system. The various “gstreamer” packages add codecs to Gstreamer, which the Ubuntu video and music player both use to open files. “IcedTea” is a browser plugin for Java, and is followed in the list by a couple more codecs. The mscorefonts package gives you Times New Roman, Arial and other Windows-standard fonts. Unrar does what it says: open RAR files.

On Playing DVDs

None of these packages, however, give you the ability to play DVDs. To do that, you’re going to need to do some extra work. You can href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs">find the instructions here.

Prefer not to do all that work? Head to the Ubuntu Software Center and install Fluendo DVD Player. It will set you back $25, but it works.

Why is either process necessary? Well, like it or not, DVDs are protected. When you buy Windows or a Mac, the people who created the DVD standard get paid. Ubuntu is free, meaning they aren’t paying anyone for the right to play DVDs. Hence the need to jump through hoops or buy a compatible player.

Why Not By Default?

All of these other programs aren’t included for similar reasons. Simply put, Ubuntu doesn’t have the right to distribute codecs, Flash, Java and other technology on the Ubuntu disk. Doing so would make Ubuntu illegal to distribute in some countries, including the United States of America. This means that Ubuntu could become illegal in America should they decide to include these packages.

Why can they offer Ubuntu Restricted Extras at all, then? Well, basically because it’s up to individuals to either install these packages or not. The theory is it’s up to you to determine whether or not these packages are legal in your country and to act accordingly.

I’d like to hear from you guys. Do you install Ubuntu Restricted Extras, or not? Why? I’ll be around in the comments below, so let’s chat.

    First Steps With The Arduino: A Closer Look At The Circuit Board & The Structure Of A Program

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/featured-arduino.jpg" alt="arduino circuit board" />Last time I left you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-arduino-starter-kit-installing-drivers-setting-board-port">having set up your Arduino to work with Mac or Windows, and having uploaded a simple test app that blinked the on-board LED. Today I’m going to explain the code you uploaded, the structure of Arduino software, and a little more about the electronic bits on the board itself.

    This article is part of an introduction to the Arduino series. The other articles in the series so far are:

    • title="What Is Arduino & What Can You Do With It? [Technology Explained]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/arduino-technology-explained/">What is Arduino and what can you do with it?

    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-arduino-starter-kit-installing-drivers-setting-board-port/">Getting Started With Your Arduino Starter Kit – Installing Drivers & Setting Up The Board & Port

    The Hardware

    Let’s take a closer look at what the Arduino Uno has in terms of bits on the circuit board.

    Here’s an enlarged diagram to refer to:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ArduinoUnoFront1.jpg" alt="arduino circuit board" width="580" height="440" />

    • Along the top, there are 14 digital Input/Output pins (numbered 0-13). These are the most versatile pins on your Arduino and can function as either input or output, and will form the core of your projects. Digital means that the signal these pins can write or read will be on or off.
    • 6 of those digital pins, which are marked by the tilde sign ~ are capable of doing what it is called href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation">Pulse Width Modulation. I’m not an electrical engineer so I won’t embarrass myself by explaining the science behind this, but to you and I it means we can provide a range of output levels – for instance, dimming an LED or driving a motor at varying speeds.
    • Pin 13 is special in that it has a built-in LED. This is for convenience and testing purposes only really. You can use that on-board LED, as you did in the Blink example app, by simply outputting to pin 13 – or it can be used as a standard I/O pin.
    • On the bottom right are 6 analog input pins. These will read the value of analog sensors such a light-meter or variable resistors.
    • On the bottom left next to the analog input pins are power pins. The only ones you really need to worry about are the ground pins (GND), 3.3v, and 5v power lines.
    • Finally, the only switch found on the Arduino is a reset switch. This will restart whatever program it has in its memory.
    • The Arduino has a set amount of memory, and if your program goes too large, the compiler will give you an error.

    The Structure Of An Arduino Program

    Every Arduino program is made up of at least two functions (if you don’t know what a function is, be sure to read my title="The Absolute Basics Of Programming For Beginners (Pt. 2)" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/absolute-basics-programming-beginners-part-2/">basic programming tutorial, part 2 – function and control statements, and title="The Basics Of Computer Programming 101 – Variables And DataTypes" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-of-computer-programming-variables-datatypes/">part 1 where we discussed variables before continuing).

    The first is the setup function. This is run initially – once only – and is used to tell the Arduino what is connected and where, as well as initialising any variables you might need in your program.

    Second is the loop. This is the core of every Arduino program. When the Arduino is running, after the setup function has completed, the loop will run through all the code, then do the whole thing again – until either either the power is lost or the reset switch is pressed. The length of time it takes to complete one full loop depends upon the code contained. You may write some code that says “wait 6 hours”, in which case the loop isn’t going to be repeating very often.

    Here’s a quick state diagram to illustrate:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/arduino-state-diagram.png" alt="arduino circuit board" width="544" height="362" />

    Examining The Blink Program

    Take a look back at the Blink program code and identify the setup and loop functions.

    Here’s the setup: />

    void setup() { /> // initialize the digital pin as an output. /> // Pin 13 has an LED connected on most Arduino boards: /> pinMode(13, OUTPUT); /> }

    The lines that begin with // are simply comments to explain the code to a human reader, and they don’t get uploaded to the Arduino. So in fact, there’s only one line of setup code in this particular Arduino app. That line is saying “Set pin 13 to output mode”. 13, remember, is the built-in LED.

    Then there is the loop: />

    void loop() { /> digitalWrite(13, HIGH); // set the LED on /> delay(1000); // wait for a second /> digitalWrite(13, LOW); // set the LED off /> delay(1000); // wait for a second /> }

    The comments at the end of each line of code explain their function quite well. HIGH and LOW refer to the ON and OFF state of a digital output – in our case the LED. You could actually write ON or OFF in the code too, both are synonymous (as is 0 and 1 also). Delay tells the Arduino to wait for a bit, in this case 1000 milliseconds (or 1 second).

    Finally, a note about the programming language used here. Notice that both setup and loop functions have the word void before them. This is a special word for nothing, because the function returns nothing when it is called – it simply runs the code contained within. For now, let’s leave it at that by saying that the function’s block of code is enclosed by curly braces { }, and that each line of code must end with a ; semi-colon.

    Try altering the basic program somehow by changing the precise delay values to something larger or smaller. See how small you can get it down to before the flashing is no longer noticeable. Work out which value to change to get it to stay on for longer, or to stay off for longer. Try adding some more digitalWrite and delay statements into the loop function to create a more complex flashing pattern like the href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOS">morse code for SOS. If you have a buzzer, try connecting it to pins 13 and GND too (hint: the red wire goes to 13, black to ground).

    That’s all for today. Next time we’ll add in some more LEDs and write our own application from scratch. As ever, comments and shares much appreciated. I can’t imagine you’d have any problems with the code referred to today, but if you’ve tried adjusting the code slightly and are running into errors or unexpected behaviour, feel free to post it in the comments and we’ll see if we can work through it together.

    The 10 Best Free Blackberry Apps You Must Download First

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/blackkey.png" alt="" />One thing I’ve realized, after having spent so much time writing for MakeUseOf, is that you can really follow along with the major events in a writer’s life based on the articles that they’ve written. In my particular case, you can see how I got my brand new Android a couple of Christmases ago, and played around with things like converting it into a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-your-android-phone-into-a-real-star-trek-tricorder/">Star Trek Tricorder. Then, one day after getting a speeding ticket, I started using my Android to report href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-effective-tools-avoid-police-radar-speed-traps/">police speed traps. Then most recently, I quit my job and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-online-resources-burn-bridges-quit-job/">burned my bridges.

    One surprise I had when I started the new job is that I would be receiving a brand new Blackberry phone. Now, this presents a dilemma – do I drop my beloved Android phone and become a Crackberry addict? I decided to explore this new world of Blackberry Smartphone apps to see if it could do at least the most important things that I use my Android for. In the process, I wanted to introduce you to some of those fundamental apps that every Blackberry user should install the first day they activate the device.

    Ten Best Must-Have Blackberry Apps

    There are really three things that I use my Android phone for about 80 percent of the time – Facebook, Twitter and email. Thankfully, there is a href="http://us.blackberry.com/smartphones/features/social/facebook.jsp">Facebook for Blackberry app that comes default with your Blackberry. It’s actually just as good, if not better, than most of the Facebook apps that I’ve used on Android.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free15a07.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    One thing I noticed about the Blackberry (Bold) was the very sweet rollover button – sort of like a touch mouse – that you can use to quickly scroll down pages and menus.  This will make scrolling through Facebook updates a breeze!

    Of course you’ve got to have href="http://us.blackberry.com/smartphones/features/social/twitter.jsp">Twitter for Blackberry as well. This is also a great app that’s laid out well and easy to navigate and use.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free18a08.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    The last critical app that I had to have was the ability to access multiple Gmail accounts. Thankfully, there is also a Gmail app available for the Blackberry.  Not only that, you can download a bunch of Google client apps for the Blackberry just by visiting href="http://www.google.com/mobile/blackberry/">Google’s mobile page in your smartphone browser.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free12a04.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    I like the client, however I also like the look and feel of the browser-based Gmail access from the Blackberry as well. So try both and just choose the one you like best.

    Another must-have app that you can also download from Google’s mobile page is Google Maps. If your Blackberry has GPS built-in, then this also becomes one of the coolest free GPS navigational tools you’ll ever use.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free14a06.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Accessing & Publishing Information With Free Blackberry Apps

    If you regularly read RSS feed updates every day with your morning coffee or during the train ride into work, then you’ll love href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/15737">XPRSS, the best free RSS feed reader available for the Blackberry. This app comes preloaded with a list of the most popular news feeds, and of course you can add as many of your own as you want.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free2e09.png" alt="" />

    Aside from reading articles that other people write, you may produce your own. If you do have your own WordPress blog, then you’ll want to install the href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/5802">WordPress client. This client lets you do almost everything from managing comments to reviewing and writing posts.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free11a03.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    If you regularly find yourself on the road and you do have a GPS-enabled phone, then the href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/5829">LifeInPocket GPS app is an all-in-one app that you’ll never be able to live without once you start using it. Based on your location, it’ll show you navigation routes, your nearby friends, nearby businesses including cheap gas or towing services, current traffic levels, current news for your area and much more.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free6a14.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Just having this one app on your phone would let you uninstall dozens of other apps.

    Another obscure little app that will quickly become a critical, necessary part of your smartphone experience is href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/4841?lang=en">BeamExplorer. Aside from the fact that it is one of the easiest file explorers to use, and integrates very nicely with the Bold’s rollover pad, BeamExplorer also lets you create MS Office files on-the-fly. That’s a very rare feature to find for free in a Blackberry app.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free8a16.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    One of my absolute favorite apps that I could never really find in the Android Market, is href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/720?lang=en">Vlingo. This is one of those rare apps that seems ahead of the curve technologically. It is perfect for in the car, because you can launch applications, update your Facebook or Twitter accounts.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free13a05.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Best of all, when you enable it, Vlingo will read all incoming text messages and emails (up to 50 words) to you so that you don’t have to fumble with your phone while you’re driving.

    The last app that I wanted to share is one called href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/39124?lang=en">Vectir. It is a remote control app that is available as either a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi install. It’s ideal for those of you that run servers or monitor-less desktops at home and you want to remote-control the PC.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screenshot_ultimate_free513.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Blackberry doesn’t offer any free VNC-type apps, but if you install the Vectir server on the PC, you can control the Desktop with your Blackberry just like you would with a VNC connection.

    As you can see, even the Blackberry offers a decent collection of free apps to get you started with enjoying your new Blackberry experience. I know I was a little nervous to change over from the Android – but the monthly savings alone made it worth my while. Now that I’ve seen that I can do everything I need to with the Blackberry that I did with my Android, the switchover really won’t be all that painful.

    Do you use a Blackberry? Are there any free Blackberry apps that you love? Share them in the comments section below.

    Stockpeek launches On Apple App Store – First Finance App To Integrate iPad 2 Smart Cover [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.ghwwlbgq.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" />Apple’s new class="vt-p" href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC947LL/A?n=ipad2&fnode=MTc0MjU2Mjc&mco=MjM2MDgwNDE">Smart Cover has made waves lately. Of course, when a new product like this launches, developers are quick to try and find a way to make their app work with it.  class="vt-p" href="http://stockwatch.toughturtle.com/">Toughturtle has got out front to bring the first full featured financial app that interacts with the Smart Cover. The Smart Cover wakes up your phone and has several folds in it so you can just peek at the screen.

    They have integrated a beautiful ticker that you can quickly peek at by just lifting up the first flap on the case. The name class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stockpeek/id445706583#">Stockpeek is an incredibly fitting name for a product such as this, since you can literally peek at your ticker in the app by simply lifting up the case slightly.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.zjzaibuz.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="360" />

    In addition to integrating the Smart Cover, Stockpeek is a fully featured stock app that offers everything you could want in terms of browsing and monitoring your stocks. For any serious trader, the one dollar price tag is very reasonable for what you get. They offer the ability to track an unlimited number of stocks, over 50 worldwide exchanges, full screen charts, and a class="vt-p" href="http://stockwatch.toughturtle.com/iPadVersion/features.php">slew of other features.

    Of course, if you don’t have an iPad 2 and Smart cover, the app is still fully functional – just without the peeking feature.

    Tales Of Monkey Island Comes To iPad, First Episode Is Free! [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/monkeyisland1.jpg" alt="" />Looking for a great free adventure game on your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ipad-device-photographers-mac/">iPad? You’re in luck, because Telltale Games’ first installment, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, is available for free on the iPad until July 22. This first installment pits the heroic Guybrush Threepwood against a mysterious illness spread by the evil pirate LeChuck.

    Tales of Monkey Island is a remake of the incredibly popular Monkey Island adventure games, a series that debuted in 1990 with the release of The Secret of Monkey Island. Developed by LucasArts, the original titles were loved by critics and fans for their humorous class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-collaborative-storytelling-websites-weave-digital-stories/">storytelling, securing them cult-classic status in gaming culture. The new series replicates the original’s wit but adds a modern 3D game engine.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/monkeyisland2.jpg" alt="" width="570" height="321" />

    The remake, which is broken up into 5 episodes, was originally released for the PC in 2009 and received much praise from critics and fans, with most of the episodes receiving a score of 80 or higher on Metacritic.

    Although Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is the only episode available for free, all five episodes have been released simultaneously for $6.99 each, bringing the total cost of the series to $27.96. That’s rather expensive by iPad standards, but it’s good compared to other platforms. The collection is currently priced at $34.99 on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/steam/">Steam, for example.

    The 4 Best Websites To Check Out New Music Releases First

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_0859.png" alt="new music releases" width="200" height="199" />How do you find new music releases? We’ve shown you plenty of tools over the months that make it easier to find some new jams. Between href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-music-services-search-engines-discover-music-musicians-bands/">music search engines, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/complete-list-hottest-music-exploration-sites/">streaming sites, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-free-ways-discover-music-online/">music discovery web apps, and services like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/muzic-place-discover-music-online/">Muzic you should have unearthed lots of interesting bands and artists by now. Heck, we’ve even shown you how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/itunes-imixes-create-great-music-playlists/">use iTunes to discover new music.

    After you find a bunch of artists you like, however, how do you keep up with all of their new releases? New music albums get released every week, so it’s quite easy to miss a release from one of your favorite artists, even if you’re paying attention. There are plenty of sites out there that house this type of information, but which sites should you be checking out first?

    id="more-65174">

    1. href="http://www.billboard.com/#/">Billboard

    If you’re looking for all the newest releases, Billboard is the official place to be. Billboard is the center for music information related to popular artists and if your goal is to merely see what’s popular or currently trending you need look no further.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_1221.jpg" alt="new music releases" width="580" height="466" />

    Click on the Charts tab to view the ‘Hot 100′, ‘Billboard 200′, and the top digital and radio songs in the US. They also have news and reviews of the latest albums and song releases, and you can listen to most of the latest tracks.

    Find a song or artist you like? With the rest of the sites on the list, you should be set with new music for a while.

    2. href="http://www.music-alerts.com/">Music-Alerts

    Music-Alerts is a really simple webapp that we covered once in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/musicalerts-monitor-album-release-dates-rss/">directory. Essentially, it notifies you when your favorite music artist releases a new CD.

    It’s not uncommon for even casual music listeners to have more than 50 artists in their music collections, and keeping track of everything those artists release on a regular basis can be a lot of work.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_1305.png" alt="top new music releases" width="580" height="459" />

    With Music-Alerts, you can add your favorite artists one by one, name your feed, and click create feed! You will receive a link to your feed that you can add to your favorite RSS reader to get notified of new music releases.

    If you’re using Google Reader, I also suggest you check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/grain-simple-desktop-notifications-google-reader/">GRaiN for desktop notifications. Also, be sure to check out href="http://www.albumreminder.com/">Album Reminder, too.

    3. href="http://newalbumreleases.net/">New Album Releases

    This next site is a personal favorite of mine and something I found a long time ago when looking for new music. New Album Releases, as it’s aptly named, posts new album releases every day.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_1218.jpg" alt="top new music releases" width="580" height="377" />

    Categories consist of Rap, Rock, Metal, Pop, Electronic, Folk, Indie, Jazz and Blues, etc. Clicking on an album will take you to a page where you can see album information such as artist, track names, format, and size on disk.

    Here’s the kicker: you can download every album you find on this site. I’m not sure how, strictly speaking, legal it is, but each album page includes download links to the individual album. The site does have a DMCA policy listed, which is far more legit than a lot of the other sites I’ve seen.

    4. href="http://www.youtube.com/music">YouTube Music

    YouTube, believe it or not, is a great place to find new music releases. It’s not as easy to locate what you’re looking for right away, which is why I have the site lower on my list, but once you’ve discovered some of the new releases you’re interested in from the sites above, you can definitely use YouTube to check them out.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_1149.jpg" alt="top new music releases" width="580" height="530" />

    On href="http://www.youtube.com/music">YouTube’s Music page, you can search via categories like ‘Easy Listening’ or ‘Rap’, or you can view the day’s hits. You can even view events near you, so if one of your favorite artists is coming to town you’ll be able to catch them.

    But wait, isn’t YouTube all about videos? Well, yeah, but with over 35 hours of new videos being uploaded to the site every minute, you can definitely use it to find some new music releases.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-02-08_1153.png" alt="new music releases" width="566" height="334" />

    If you’re familiar with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/search/?cx=009717636731598800244:qhe4rh7wuxs&cof=FORID:11&q=download+youtube&sa=">downloading YouTube vids, in fact, you can actually rip the audio right from them to download the latest songs you come across. We’ve covered many services capable of doing this, but all you need is a simple site like href="http://flvto.com/">FLVTO.

    What are some of your favorite sites to keep up on new music releases?

    Play & Create First Person Shooter Maps With Cube2

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube2icon.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="300" height="121" />If there’s one thing I love to do to release stress after a hard day is to sit back with a good first person shooter game and just let loose with the mayhem. I’m talking about running across mine fields, blasting everything that moves to pieces, and creating chain reaction explosions. An hour or so of that and I’ve completely vented my frustrations.

    The thing is, there are really only so many first person shooter games out there, and once you beat one it can get pretty old to play the same levels over and over. Wouldn’t it be cool to redesign levels, or create your own maps from scratch? Even better, wouldn’t it be cool if you could create the first person shooter map while you’re in the middle of playing it?

    id="more-64407"> /> Here at MUO it’s pretty obvious that we love FPS games. You’ve got the five free first person shooters that class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">Simon covered, and five cross platform FPS games class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-cross-platform-fps-games/">Ross covered. It’s also fitting that I recently covered a Cube engine driven game called class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/multiplayer-war-games-fps-assaultcube/">AssultCube, because the FPS I’m going to cover today is also based on the Cube engine, but it’s far more advanced. Best of all, it actually lets you modify the map while you’re in the middle of playing it!

    Introducing Cube 2

    class="vt-p" href="http://sauerbraten.org/">Cube 2 is actually entitled Sauerbraten, and it’s described by the creators as a “major redesign” of the original Cube first person shooter. After playing AssaultCube, it’s pretty apparent that Sauerbraten really is one of the more advanced FPS shooters based on the Cube engine. Quite simply it loads faster and the graphics moves smoother (without skipping) than just about any other FPS I’ve played.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube1.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="580" height="460" />

    When you first launch Cube 2 you’ll see the main options available. There are a lot of different ways to play this game. Bot match is a quick game with goals like “capture the base” (like capture the flag), or you can launch a campaign which includes a series of sub-missions in order to accomplish an overall goal.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube2.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="486" height="532" />

    There are several campaigns that come preloaded with Cube 2, each with its own story line and unique graphics. These are pretty involved and detailed campaigns. It’s almost like having multiple FPS games in one package.

    Once I launched one of them and started playing, I was surprised at the attention to detail. I wouldn’t say that the graphics are superior to all other FPS games, but what surprised me was some of the realism thrown in. For example, you can see below where the programmers included a flaring effect from the overhead lighting – sort of what would happen when you shine your camera toward a bright light. This sort of attention to detail deserves a mention and a thumbs up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube3.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="580" height="502" />

    The default controls in Cube 2 are identical to most other FPS games out there, so the learning curve is pretty much non-existent if you’ve played these games before.  I was rusty from not playing in a while – I managed to take out the beast lying in a pool of blood off to the right, but that one charging toward me took me out pretty fast.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube4.jpg" alt="first person shooter map design" width="580" height="434" />

    Bot matches are pretty fun, but make sure you practice a bit first because you have to be pretty good to compete with these guys. Some of these levels are truly impressive, like the one below where you essentially fight from astroid to astroid in order to take over the enemy base.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube6.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="474" />

    There is also a pretty heavy user base with Cube2, so when you go into multiplayer mode you’re bound to find an active game server with lots of players ready to take you on and take you out. As you can see below, there’s no shortage of action.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube7.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="546" />

    As a first person shooter, it’s a good game. However, in my opinion this one probably wouldn’t have stood out so much if it wasn’t for the awesome in-game map editing system that’s built right in. When you click on the “editing” option from the main menu. you’ll see all of the in-game editing controls available. Holding down “E” during game play will get you into edit mode (Cntrl-E during solo play).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube5.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="508" />

    In game editing takes a little while to get used to. It’s fairly intuitive, but it’s a good idea to read through the controls in the Editing menu in order to really do a good job altering the levels to your liking. You can modify the game however you like, making it as intricate or as wacky as you like.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube8.jpg" alt="create fps maps" width="580" height="434" />

    In editing mode, you can just grab objects and move them to new locations or delete them. Here I’m moving some armor from the stand it was originally on to just in front of a large open doorway.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube9.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="444" />

    It’s really fun to create your own levels – almost an entirely different hobby in and of itself. But if you don’t really have time for that and want to just play around within maps that other people have created, then select “Load Map” from the main menu and pick one of the many premade maps that come loaded with the game. You can also alter any of these to your liking as well.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/cube10.jpg" alt="first person shooter maps" width="579" height="577" />

    As a first person shooter, I think Cube 2 is an excellent choice. It’s better than most and not quite as good as a few, but where it takes the cake is in the in-game editing feature, without a doubt.

    Give Cube 2 a try and test your skill at creating a new map of your own while you’re inside the first person shooter map itself. Did you find that it was easy or hard? Let us know what you think in the comments section below. />

    A First Look At The iOS 4.2 On The iPad

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/multi.png" border="0" alt="ios 4.2" width="300" height="261" />Now that class="vt-p" href="http://www.apple.com/ios/">iOS 4.2 is finally available to iPad users, what new features does it bring to the table? Some of them are more than welcome like folders, Find My iPad and the Mail app’s revamp. A few of the other features, including the much lauded multitasking as well as AirPrint leave a little to be desired.

    We’ve put together a rundown of the most important features, to give you an idea of what you’ll get with the update, although there are already rumours flying around that OS 4.3 will be out as soon as December. Of course, 4.2 took its sweet time to arrive, so we won’t be holding our breath.

    id="more-59761">

    Folders

    If you have a hundred and one apps on your iPad, the appearance of folders is probably more than welcome. To create a folder, drag one app on top of the other, adding a maximum of  20 apps per folder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Folders11.jpg" alt="ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    To make life easier, we would suggest organising your iPad when it’s hooked up to iTunes. It will be less time consuming as you can select multiple apps by clicking the CMD/CTRL button. When you download a new app on your computer, when syncing your iPad, you can add it to the desired folder straight away before it’s even on your iPad.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Folders2.jpg" border="0" alt="apple ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    Find My iPad

    In the past, it required a paid MobileMe account to benefit from this feature but with 4.2, iPads and other iOS devices can be remotely located and controlled if lost.

    The service, available when you download the free app, class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8">Find My iPhone, will allow you to locate your iPad on a map, display a message of your choice on the screen, set a passcode lock and even wipe all of your personal data from the device.   Bakari recently looked further into this really useful service class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/locate-missing-stolen-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-find-iphone-mac">here.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/FindMyiPad.png" border="0" alt="apple ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    Multitasking

    Multitasking has been a thorn in the side of Apple fanboys, and while it’s now available on OS 4.2 it isn’t exactly perfect. First, not all apps support multitasking so don’t expect to listen to music using just any radio or music app and leave it running in the background.

    For those apps that do support multitasking, click the home button twice in succession to bring up a menu of currently open apps. Closing an app uses a similar process as deleting an app from your screen, hold the icon down until the delete icon appears on each app, and close the apps that you don’t need. Don’t forget to do this on a regular basis otherwise you’ll be leaving apps open in the background left and right.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/MultiTasking.jpg" border="0" alt="apple ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    It seems Apple can’t find a middle ground. Either no multitasking at all, or leave all of your apps open unless they are manually closed. For example, if you’re listening to a music app that supports multitasking, be sure to use the mulitasking menu to close it as hitting the home button alone will not stop the music.

    Mail Revamp

    The native Mail app has had a small but significant makeover. You can now view all of your email in a unified inbox, as well as read threaded conversations a la Gmail, making for a much more streamlined email experience.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Mail1b.png" border="0" alt="ipad ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    AirPrint

    Apple might want to make a big deal over the ability to print wirelessly from your iPad, but the truth of the matter is that it only works with specific HP printers.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Print.jpg" border="0" alt="ipad ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    It’s not clear whether the service will be available to use with other printers, but in the meantime other iPad users can give these class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/print-iphone-free-easy-steps/">options a try. If you’re on the go, check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/print-anything-wherever-you-are-printeron/">Ryan’s tips on how to print no matter where you are, a few of which should work with the iPad.

    Parental Controls

    With newly added parental controls, you can stop your kids from buying half of the iTunes app store, whether inadvertently or on purpose. You can also disable access to YouTube, iTunes and even Safari as well as disabling in-app purchases.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Parental.png" border="0" alt="ipad ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    Search Current Page

    This feature is actually a little hard to find, but with 4.2 you can now search for specific text on any webpage. Using the Google search bar at the top of the browser, enter the text you want to search for, and it will tell you how many times the word appears on the page.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Search1.jpg" border="0" alt="Search1.jpg" width="580" height="435" />

    Other changes to the iOS include the ability to reply to calendar invitations, iTunes TV show rentals and access to the gaming platform already available on other iOS devices, Game Center. You can also now benefit from AirPlay, which allows you to stream digital media to your Apple TV or AirPlay enabled speakers from your iPad.

    Another iOS native app to get a facelift is Notes. Apple are finally gives you a choice of 3 fonts, Chalkboard, Helvetica and Marker Felt, and it’s about time, because let’s face it, the original Marker Felt font was pretty juvenile.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Notes.png" border="0" alt="ios 4.2" width="580" height="435" />

    What feature are you happy to finally have on your iPad? Let us know in the comments. />

    Audio And Video Drivers For Windows Xp – Read this First !

    Life just got easier. there’s a way you can download audio and video drivers for Windows XP without spending time and effort on the manufacturer’s official website or practically any other site. Trying to find the right driver for any of your devices can sometimes be a tricky and risky task. Let me teach you the secrets you need to know; you’ll see how to save yourself some valuable time and prevent hassles.

    Click here to download audio and video drivers for Windows XP now!

    Before we go on, i need to warn you that if you happen to load an incorrect device driver, it may simply not work, or you may start to see various windows errors. Using proper drivers is essential not merely for the functioning of a specific device, but for your windows system’s ‘well-being’ and efficiency. Can you define “driver”? Put simply, a driver program holds essential data on specific software or hardware so that other applications can “converse” with that particular device. Imagine how delighted i was when, as i was trying to detect a specific driver, i came upon an instant driver(s) detection solution that quickly tracks down the latest edition of your desired driver in a matter of moments. I was impressed when i tried it out – it took me about 40 seconds to come across the drivers that i needed.

    Undeniably, your pc’s drivers are vital elements that need your attention, precisely in the same way you keep your windows fully operational. It’s a real time-saving convenience that these state-of-the-art utilities are often capable of downloading the driver you’re searching for, even in the case it’s unable to be found, even from the manufacturer himself! It’s not a good idea to use drivers that were downloaded from uncertain urls – your pc may end up with spyware and malware.

    So with one of these programs, the process involved in order to download audio and video drivers for Windows XP doesn’t need to be a lengthy and complicated and risky assignment as it used to be. A word to the wise: if you find yourself dealing with system errors, refreshing your drivers is a good step to take as there are high chances it’ll fix these problems. Now that you understand how this technology works, put it to work for you – no doubt you’ll discover some added benefits that i forgot to point out. I believe that one day windows’ update element will be able to supply automated updates to such crucial files as these. Concluding this story on driver scanners; i expect that it has been enlightening and that it helped you to find what you were looking for.

    iOS 4 First Impressions

    WHY DOES THE AUDIO SUCK? Read this description: www.facebook.com I learned a few things while I was trying to record my first impressions of Apple’s new iOS 4 (as seen here on the iPhone 3GS). I decided to make the fandroids happy and used my HTC Evo 4G to capture the excitement. Did you catch that? I’m actually using an Android device in a practical setting! It disappointed me on so many levels. Not iOS 4, but the HTC Evo 4G’s default camera app and settings. And, just in case think THIS video looks and sounds bad, here’s the raw data from the first one: pastie.org Yes, my first take topped out at 11fps since I was recording indoors with limited light. Ouch. Even when I exposed myself to more light (to capture at 24fps), I still wasn’t able to lock the camera’s exposure – so you’ll find the brightness fading in and out throughout this entire video. Sorry – I’m just using the default video recording app on the HTC Evo 4G (as would most users). Oh, and… there’s no way to adjust the default audio settings either, so I was limited to a paltry 8k mono sound! I’m a little baffled by that one. What was HTC thinking?! And even after getting through it all, I learned that HTC’s software only encodes MPEG4 in 3GP format. WTF? What good is having expandable storage options if your defaults are crippled? Moreover, I would like to apologize for repeating myself in the video – this was (seriously) an umpteenth take after trying to get the camera to play nicely. *sigh* So, back to
