How To Format A Large Hard Drive With Either FAT Or FAT32

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD01.png" alt="format hard drive" width="250" height="180" />In a recent article I detailed  class="vt-p" title="How To Format a USB Drive" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/format-usb-drive/">how to format a USB drive and in a follow-up article I explained what class="vt-p" title="What Is a File System" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/file-system-find-runs-drives/">file systems are good for. In both articles I mentioned that there is a 32GB size limit for partitions when formatting with FAT or FAT32. Well, as some of you certainly know, that is not the entire truth. FAT / FAT32 itself can handle up to 16TB hard drives and up to 2TB are supported in most operating systems. Microsoft has set a 32GB partition size limit for the FAT / FAT32 file system to promote NTFS, which is generally more efficient when working with large partitions.

So first of all, this limitation only exists in recent versions of Windows. Secondly, Windows does recognize large hard drives formatted with FAT / FAT32. And finally, you can circumvent the 32 GB limit.

id="more-64517"> /> In this article I will show what you can do if you need to format a large hard drive with FAT / FAT32 or create a 32+ GB partition with said file system.

The Manual Way

You don’t need a tool to circumvent the 32 GB partition limit, you can do it manually and it’s fairly easy. Rather than using the standard Windows formatter, you switch to the command line.

In Windows XP, go to > Start > Run. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, go to > Start, type > Run in the search field, and launch it. Type > cmd into the text field and click > OK.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD02.png" alt="Command Line Formatting" width="417" height="222" />

Enter the following command at the prompt: format /FS:FAT32 X:

Replace the letter X with the drive letter for the external device you wish to format and hit > Enter.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD06.png" alt="Command Line Formatting" width="580" height="238" />

That’s it! The formatting may take a long time as it did in my 15.2 GB example above, but it works.

The Tools

If you don’t want to mess with the command line, you can use tools that apply the same principle, but provide a nice graphical user interface (GUI) for your convenience.

class="vt-p" title="SwissKnife" href="http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-411-swissknife">SwissKnife (Windows XP)

SwissKnife is a simple partition manager that lets you do more than just format your hard drive with different file systems. You can also use it to delete, create, and resize partitions and it works faster than Windows.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD04.png" alt="Manage partitions" width="580" height="355" />

However, the free version of SwissKnife is only available for Windows 95 through XP. If you would like to use it on more recent versions of Windows, you have to purchase class="vt-p" title="SwissKnife Premium" href="http://www.compuapps.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=126&Itemid=190">SwissKnife Premium or try one of the other free tools below.

class="vt-p" title="Fat32 Formatter" href="http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/index.html">Fat32Formatter

Windows 7 users can try Fat32Formatter. It’s a self-executable tool with a decent GUI that allows you to format large hard drives with FAT32. Balloon tips guide the user through its functions. No other documentation is available.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD07.png" alt="file allocation table" width="564" height="373" />

This tool is almost too simplistic. While you can delete a partition and create new ones, you cannot choose the allocation unit size, which does make a different as I class="vt-p" title="How To Format a USB Drive" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/format-usb-drive/">outlined previously.

class="vt-p" title="FAT32 Format" href="http://www.pendriveapps.com/format-fat32-larger-than-32gb/">FAT32 Format

FAT32 Format is another very basic portable GUI tool that doesn’t require installation. It just does one task, and it does it very efficiently: format drives with FAT32.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/FormatHD05.png" alt="format in fat32" width="412" height="397" />

FAT32 Format works with Windows XP through 7 and supports up to 2TB partition size. You can choose the allocation unit size and give the partition a new volume label. Unfortunately, it can not create new partitions.

If you want to manage your partitions, i.e. create new ones or change their size, I recommend that you use dedicated software. First, create a partition that you want to format with FAT32. Then, in case your partition manager can’t do it, use one of the tools above to carry out the FAT32 formatting.

For detailed instructions, see James’ article on class="vt-p" title="How To Partition a Hard Drive in Windows" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/setup-hard-drive-windows/"> How To Set Up A Second Hard Drive In Windows: Partitioning. For a third party alternative to Windows’ partition manager, see Justin’s article on class="vt-p" title="GParted Partitioning Software" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gparted-ultimate-partitioning-software/">GParted – The Ultimate In Partitioning Software. Convert Any File To PDF Format Using Nitro Reader [Windows]

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/logo2.png" alt="convert to pdf format" />PDF files have been the ubiquitous file format for sharing documents, thanks to their ability to lock down the layout & formatting of the document and the tiny file size.  Adobe Acrobat has a hefty price tag that runs into many hundreds of dollars, so as awesome as PDF files are, creating them used to be quite costly.

    Today we have a number of free and open source solutions to create PDF files. Better yet, these tools allow us to create the document in our familiar software environment, say Microsoft Word, and convert them to PDF format.

    One such great app is Nitro Reader, which is free to use and is loaded with a lot of great features.

    id="more-52723">

    Overview

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.nitroreader.com/">Nitro Reader supports both Windows 32 bit and 64 bit platforms. On the download page, there is a field to enter your email address to get email updates about Nitro Reader. Submitting the email address is a not a mandatory requirement and you can download the file straight away.

    Once the download is complete, the installation is very quick and does not include any other bundled toolbars or trialware. After installation, Nitro Reader set itself as the default PDF reader of choice without giving a choice, which I found a bit annoying. You can revert this back by going into the Preferences section.

    Reading PDF Files

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Reading.jpg" alt="convert to pdf format" width="580" height="427" />

    Nitro Reader has a clean, familiar ribbon interface just like Microsoft Office and a light footprint running smoothly without hogging system resources. It comes with the standard features we have come to expect from a standard PDF reader. Tasks and tools are separated appropriately for easy access.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Customizing-the-QAT.png" alt="create pdf files" width="580" height="526" />

    The Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) is extremely customizable and you can pick & choose the shortcuts you use often to create an easily accessible group. Nitro Reader’s panes are context specific ie. they are displayed or hidden depending on the content on display.

    An option to notify special features in the PDF file like security restrictions, digital certificates, or form fields is also available in Nitro Reader.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Tabbed.png" alt="create pdf files" width="580" height="264" />

    Accessing multiple PDF files is such a delight with a browser-like tabbed interface. While reading multiple documents, it is possible with Nitro Reader to set different page view settings for each of the documents that are open.

    Creating PDF files

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Creating.png" alt="create pdf files" width="550" height="417" />

    Nitro Reader can create PDF files from a whopping three hundred different file formats. PDF creation process is extremely simple. Select a file from the disk, choose the file optimization level (to reduce the file size), assign a location to save the created file and you are all done.

    Nitro Reader creates the PDF file keeping the layout and style of the original document completely intact.

    Content Extraction

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Extraction.png" alt="convert to pdf format" width="552" height="386" />

    Often we find the content formatting in the file to be too distracting to read or to save the images embedded in the file. Nitro Reader does a very fine job in extracting both text and images from the PDF file. The text extracted even the index without much damage to the original formatting & alignment.

    Final Thoughts

    For a free app, Nitro Reader is loaded with an unbelievable set of features. Nitro Reader also can save the data entered in a PDF form even after closing it until you reset it. To add a digital signature, all you have to do is upload an image and just start signing documents away. Transparency is automatically added to the images to give a watermark-like look and you can add multiple signatures featuring multiple users as well.

    If you are interested in other Acrobat Reader alternatives check out our coverage class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/a-quadruple-of-light-alternatives-to-adobe-reader/">here. While you’re at it, you might also want to learn to use class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/can-you-convert-a-pdf-file-to-a-word-doc/">AnyBizSoft PDF to Word Converter and to turn all your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-pdf-file-flash-movie/">PDF files into flash movies!

    What are your thoughts on Nitro Reader? I consider this app to be the best and would love to hear from you if there are better alternatives to convert files to PDF format.

    What Is Mp3? Why Is It The Most Popular Music Format In Internet?

    Music is available in many formats just to name a few would be WMA, WAV, MP3 among MP3 is the most commonly used these days. MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players.

    MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group as part of its MPEG-1 standard.

    The use in MP3 of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners.

    The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people. This method is commonly referred to as perceptual coding. It internally provides a representation of sound within a short-term time/frequency analysis window, by using psychoacoustic models to discard or reduce precision of components less audible to human hearing, and recording the remaining information in an efficient manner.

    From the first half of 1994 through the late 1990s, MP3 files began to spread on the Internet. And the growth of the MP3 format of music became exponential. One of the main reasons why MP3 is the most commonly used format of music is because of its growth in the internet. Internet actually fuelled the growth of MP3 format. Many may wonder how could something like the internet which is common to all fuelled the growth of MP3 format and not others. Well the main reason is that it was the MP3 format that was most easily available on the internet for sharing among various users. So if a song is available by anyone person anywhere in the world that song could be shared by anyone else who was connected to the internet this is called peer to peer sharing. This way anyone could get any song that he wanted. But there was a disadvantage that was we had to believe that person sharing the song is only sharing the original song and not anything else disguised as the song so to avoid this confusion, and for the sake of security it is always better to download form a known person of site.

    Today a number of sites are available which provide a large number of songs for free download this way we can get whichever song that we want and be safe and secure.

    Locate Songs in Mp3 Format for Portable Devices

    Santa Claus was generous to you and you got a brand new MP3 player. The disk of this nice gadget is so big that it can hold a thousand times more MP3s than you currently have. So, you are searching hectically where to download MP3s from. Don?t worry; the Internet is the place to go to, if you want to download loads of MP3s.

    If you have an iPod or an MP3 player, then you are probably always on the lookout for more music to download. Fortunately for you, the Internet has a plethora of resources to satisfy your music appetite. Soon, you will have hours of tunes at your disposal.

    If you have been to high school lately, you will see about half of the student body plugged into iPods or MP3 players in between classes, at lunch, and after school. For those who have teenagers at home, you know how hard it is to get their attention when they are listening to their music. With the increasingly advanced technology, it takes about 24-48 hours of music to fill a disc.

    Thus, it requires a LOT of downloads to fill an MP3 player. For some kids, one site, one genre, and they are all set to download all the MP3 music they will ever want. However, if you like different kinds of music, from a variety of artists, you may want to check out numerous sites before settling on one or two. Unless the music is pirated, which is illegal and punishable by law, you will have to pay for the music by the single or pay a subscription.

    Generally subscription sites offer unlimited downloads. This is great but only if the site has songs from genres you like. Therefore, before you subscribe to a MP3 downloads site, check what they offer because if you subscribe with many sites, which don?t have your music, the costs can be overwhelming.

    There is one more thing to bear in mind ? consumers benefit when MP3 download sites compete. Because of this competition, you will often find offers for free downloads. As with any other purchasing decision, first you need to make some research where the best deals are and only after that sign up with a site. For instance, if a site gives you a 15% discount if you download more than 10 songs, make the calculations if this is feasible for you or not.

    You will soon see for yourself that the Internet is a golden mine for downloaders. Well, we also mentioned that free lunch (i.e. free MP3s) can be poisonous (or illegal), so make your best to watch for the best deal not for the free stuff. The best deal can be a cheap song or a low subscription fee for unlimited downloads for all (including your siblings and relatives).

    Therefore, if you want to download MP3 songs, you just need to learn how to choose the best places for MP3 downloads. Some sites offer discounts or free songs, while others offer unlimited downloads for a low fee. You see, competition for your dollar is great and you are the one who benefits most from it!

    Recover MP3 files after format hard drive or deleted by a mistake operation

    MP3 file will “lose” in certain situations. For example, it may lose a MP3 file if MP3 player software is forced to quit unexpectedly, or if your computer has a power interruption while you’re playing, or if you close the file without saving changes,or virus attacks,or fomatted by a mistake,or deleted by a mistake operation.
    If you format hard drive and deleted MP3 files by a mistake operation will loss data,you need data recovery software to recover MP3 files.
    MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3( MP3 ), is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression.
An MP3 file that is created using the setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file that is about 1/11th the size of the CD file created from the original audio source. An MP3 file can also be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality. The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people.

    The MPEG-1 standard does not include a precise specification for an MP3 encoder, but does provide example psychoacoustic models, rate loop, and the like in the non-normative part of the original standard.
    Decoding, on the other hand, is carefully defined in the standard. Most decoders are “bitstream compliant”, which means that the decompressed output – that they produce from a given MP3 file – will be the same, within a specified degree of rounding tolerance, as the output specified mathematically in the ISO/IEC standard document.
    Several bit rates are specified in the MPEG-1 Layer 3 standard: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256 and 320 kbit/s, and the available sampling frequencies are 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz.

    When performing lossy audio encoding, such as creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio. Using a lower bit rate provides a relatively lower audio quality and produces a smaller file size. Likewise, using a higher bit rate outputs a higher quality audio, but also results in a larger file.

    mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format

    have bought one mp3/mp4 player from china. It had 2 GB memory and it had new version of firmware. Due to some error in mp3 player, I format it. Then when I checked memory space, I found that it has only 109 MB. I don’t know why mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format. Anyone else having the same problem. Please help me.
    Thank you.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    Hey you are using fake mp3/mp4 player and that’s why you are getting such type of problem. You must check before buying whether it is working properly or not. Most of the people have such type of problem, who have take china made electronic device. If your mp3/mp4 player has warranty then you have toreplace it with new one to get rid out of this problem.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    Have you tried to format it using Command prompt. If not then use following steps to do this.
    1.First connect your mp3/mp4 player to computer.
    2.Now open Command prompt.
    3.Now type “format _ ” (Instead of “_” use drive letter of your mp3/mp4 player )
    That’s it.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    You have to use TestDisk utility to fix this problem. TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    I able to fix this problem by using SD Formatter 2.0. I think you also use it to get rid out of this problem. This software formats all SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards using a formatting program that complies with official SD memory card requirements. SD formatting provides quick and easy access to your SD memory card. SD or SDHC memory card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with official SD memory card requirements and optimum performance may not be experienced.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    I also had the same problem. Then as per your answer I used TestDisk utility to fix this problem and it really works for me. But one problem is there. I able to recover only 1gb from it. This means that now my mp3/mp4 player shows only 1gb free space instead of 2gb. Can anyone tell me how do I get back to 2gb. Is there any kind of software available.

    Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
    Hey I also have the same model and same problem. I also format my mp3 player and then it shows only 178mb free space. I tried various method to fix this problem, but nothing happened. Then after frustrating I replace my mp3/mp4 player with new one and I able to fix this problem. I think you also replace your mp3/mp4 player with new one to get rid out of this problem.

    The History of the Mp3 File Format

    If you have listened to music on your computer, then there’s no doubt that you have come into contact with an MP3 file or two. Most people do not know much about MP3s besides that they are files used to store music data on. Basically that’s all they are, a way to store audio data on a computer. Well, let me tell you, MP3s are that, but there’s a bit more to them. Today I will be taking you through a tour of the history and the ins and outs of the MP3 file format.

    What is an MP3?
    An MP3 files, also know as an MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, is a form of digital audio encoding and lossy compression format. It was designed by a team of European engineers to reduce audio file size, while staying as true as possible to the sound quality of the original uncompressed recording. This is achieved by using psychoacoustic models to eliminate parts of the audio that are not audible to the human ear, saving the parts of the audio that we can hear. The MP3 can be saved in different compression modes, allowing flexibility in data size/quality. This is one of the reasons why the MP3 format is the most widely used audio file format.

    The History of the MP3
    The MP3 was developed by the German company Fraunhofer-Gesellshaft, and also hold the patent for MP3 technology, which they license out now. In 1987 the Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen research center, part of Fraunhofer-Gesellshaft, began research on high quality, low bit rate audio encoding. They named this project EUREKA EU147. Dieter Seitzer, professor at the University of Erlangen, helped with the coding. At the time he was working on a way to transfer audio file information over a standard telephone line. The main brain behind the development of the MP3 was Karlheinz Brandenburg; also know as the “father of the MP3″. He was a mathematics and electronics specialist who had been researching compression methods since 1977. Fraunhofer was granted a patent to the technology in April 1989. According to Brandenburg, the MP3 file format almost did not exist. In 1991, during modification test, the encoding did not want to work. But luckily two days before the submission of the first version of the MP3 codec, they identified and solved the compiler error. 1993 saw the publication of the MPEG-1 standard, with the updated MPEG-2 standard developed and published a year later. One small relatively unknown fact is that in 1999, the record label Sub-Pop was the first record label to distribute their music as MP3s online.

    In this article, I did not go too much into the technical details of the MP3 file format. This was meant to give you a simple history of the MP3 file, where it came from, who was involved in its invention, and where it is now. I hope you all gained at least a little knowledge and understanding into the world of the MP3.

    Why Mp3 Is The Most Popular Music Format

    For many modern music fans, online music is synonymous with the MP3 format. Although other audio formats are available, and new ones emerging all the time, none of these have come close to rivalling MP3 in terms of popularity and versatility when sharing music over the internet.

    The history of MP3 can be traced back to 1987, when the German company Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft researched audio compression for high quality music coded at a low bit-rate. The company obtained a patent in Germany for MPEG Audio Layer III (MP3) in 1989, and over the next decade developed the audio compression technology into its present form.

    The first portable MP3 players appeared in 1999, and despite being bulky and limited compared to today’s standards, the freedom they offered from physical CDs sent a clear indication that a revolution was underway, in terms of how music was created and listened to. Artists began creating music tailored for the MP3 market, and as technology gradually caught up to the ideal, MP3 music became the standard for personal stereos, cars and now mobile phones.

    The universal nature of MP3 means the format is compatible with a wider range of players than other forms of audio compression, which are often limited to specific players or have other drawbacks. While some formats such as WAV or FLAC are capable of boasting superior quality to MP3, this also results in much larger file sizes that are inconvenient when storing music on portable MP3 players. Other audio formats like WMA and AAC also have their advantages, but these are tailored towards users of Microsoft and Apple media players respectively.

    The popularity of mp3 music shows that its creators succeeded in creating an audio format capable of holding high quality sound at a relatively low bit-rate. There is a wide range of compression formats available, from as low as 32 kb/s to as high as 320 kb/s, with lower bit-rates having inferior quality but the advantage of a smaller file size, meaning music fans can store a great deal more music than is often the case in other audio formats.

    As storage space on personal computers and mp3 players has improved over the past few years, mp3 music at higher bit-rates such as 320 kb/s has become more popular among music fans easier to listen to their favourite songs in the highest quality possible. High quality music streaming has also seen MP3 reach a wider audience, as music lovers can listen to their favourite songs over the internet without needing to download them first.

    MP3 Audio Format – Convenient yet powerful

    Mp3 player is the most recent and popular music format that has inevitably helped the consumer to listen the tunes of their choice. The previous audio formats like the tapes, cassettes, CD’s didn’t give much convenience to the consumers in comparison to the mp3 audio format. Therefore, with the help of mp3 player, you can easily create personalized or customized music tunes and carry it anywhere you go.

    How mp3 files work?
    Mp3 files movement is much amazing as compared to music cassettes, CD’s and other audio formats. A CD stores music in the form of digital information. When a CD is created, music is sampled around 44,100 times per second. Separate samples are used both for left and right sound speakers of a music system. Thus, a CD stores huge amount of data i.e. 44,100 samples/second * 16 bits/sample * 2 channels = 1,411,200 bits per second. If we break it down, 1.4 million bits per second equals 176,000 bytes per second. An average song on a CD consumes about 32 million bytes of space and it takes much time while you download it. In case of mp3 audio format, the size of music file is reduced whereby a 32 MB music file is compressed to 3 Mb. Therefore, it could also be downloaded fast from the internet to your hard disk. At the same time, it takes much less space.

    Why Mp3 has revolutionized the web?
    It has made easy for people to easily distribute their music files at very less or no cost. It provides easy and instant accessibility to music files on the internet. People have learned a lot to manipulate sound on the computer. You can now easily;

    Download an mp3 song from the internet and play it.

    Rip any song from a CD and play it or encode it in mp3 format.

    Record any song yourself, convert it into mp3 format and distribute over the internet to the rest of the world.

    You can convert MP3 files into CD files and create your own audio CD’s from mp3 files over the internet.

    Store a number of Mp3 files on data CD’s.

    Load mp3 songs into any mp3 player and carry it anywhere you go.
