Qiqqa Organizes Academic Papers, A Student’s Best Friend [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-icon.png" alt="" />Get your massive collection of academic papers under control so you can get to work actually writing. class="vt-p" href="http://www.qiqqa.com">Qiqqa is a document management program built from the ground up for academics, making it a must-have tool for students and professors everywhere. Set Qiqqa up now and be ready to head back to school.

Journal articles are just as relevant in the academic world today as they’ve ever been, but fewer and fewer people actually handle a physical journal on a day-to-day basis. Instead students and professors are amassing ever-growing folders of PDF files containing the papers they need to do their job. These files are convenient in many ways but the more papers you collect the harder it is to find anything.

Featuring quality OCR and a searchable document library complete with metadata (author, subjects, tags and more), Qiqqa makes organizing your PDF files a snap. Add an indexed way to add comments and markup pages and you’ll quickly realize that this is the tool you’ve been looking for.

Your Library

Start up class="vt-p" href="http://www.qiqqa.com">Qiqqa and you’ll see a summary of your library, along with a collection of links to learn how to better use Qiqqa:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-main.png" alt="" width="580" height="224" />

You’ll also notice that there is a tabbed interface. This means you can open various documents at once, which is useful while writing.

Open the library and you’ll see your PDF collection:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-library.png" alt="" width="580" height="182" />

All of your papers are presented here, assuming you’ve added them. Adding files to this library is easy. You can set Qiqqa to watch a folder on your computer for new files; do this and any files added to that folder will be in your library. Alternatively, you can add files individually or add entire folders of files.

Once you build your collection you can scroll through to find a specific paper if you’d like. Alternatively, you can use the search function:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-search.png" alt="" width="580" height="184" />

This is probably the quickest way to find what you’re looking for, but it is by no means the only way. You can also break your library down using metadata:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-filters.png" alt="" width="580" height="285" />

Above you can see the papers organized according to whether or not they’ve been read. As you can see there are a variety of other options, including authors, publications, year and tags. Some PDFs include this information but most don’t; you’ll have to add metadata to the files to use these tools.

Getting Metadata

Luckily Qiqqa also includes a brilliant way of collecting metadata. It requires some input from you, but will ultimately save you a lot of time when you’re searching for documents and when you’re building a bibliography later. This video tutorial outlines everything nicely:

width="580" height="430" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oPGi4rTI7h4?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> width="580" height="430" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oPGi4rTI7h4?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" />

Reading PDF Files

Qiqqa comes with a built-in PDF reader, of course:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-reading.png" alt="" width="580" height="202" />

From here you can read the way you usually would, with a few bonuses. You can highlight text and add notes; these notes are then indexed for easy reference. In fact, all text in all the PDFs you add to Qiqqa are indexed; even PDFs made from scanned documents. This is possible because Qiqqa comes with very good class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ocr/">OCR technology.

This is put to good use. For example, Qiqqa can automatically determine the title of a paper by looking for the biggest words on the front page of the paper. This same concept is used to automatically generate a table of contents for any file that doesn’t have one, a feature that can save you a lot of time.

Other Features

If you’re working on a paper you might want to visualize your ideas alongside the sources that inspired them. Qiqqa includes a tool for this:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/qiqqa-brainstorm.png" alt="" width="511" height="236" />

This isn’t that different from other class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mindmapping-software-organize-year-resolutions/">mind mapping software, except that you can directly reference the papers from which you’re drawing ideas.

Another feature worth mentioning is online syncing. You need to purchase a user account to really make use of this, but for academics with multiple computers it could be a godsend. It’s even possible to browse your papers online.

Download Qiqqa

Ready to download Qiqqa? Visit the class="vt-p" href="http://www.qiqqa.com/">Qiqqa homepage to find out how.

Want to see Qiqqa in action before you download anything? Watch the following video; it goes over all the features mentioned above and more:

width="580" height="430" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FtdicOm60pI?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> width="580" height="430" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FtdicOm60pI?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" />

You can class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/QiqqaTips">find more Qiqqa tutorial videos here.

Conclusion

I’m not an academic; at least, not anymore. My wife Kathy is though, and it was her quest to organize papers that made me aware of Qiqqa. She is a physics graduate student and uses the software all the time; she tells me it’s extremely useful and I can certainly see why.

I want to know what you think, though. Is Qiqqa a good way to manage documents, or is there a better one? Let me know in the comments below, as always. I love learning from you guys.

Migrate Your Facebook Friends To Google+ With The Facebook Friend Exporter Extension [Chrome]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/intro.jpeg?54167" alt="" />By now many of you will class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-google">know about Google+, its rising popularity and the inevitable knock-on effect for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook. Maybe you’ve seen the light and been converted to Google’s way?  Are you worried your Facebook profile is going to suffer as a consequence?

You could always try migrating your current list of Facebook cohorts to your new-found greener pastures, which is exactly what the Facebook Friend Exporter for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/chrome">Chrome aims to do. Of course, Facebook isn’t too pleased about this and it’s become somewhat of a cat-and-mouse game. The extension’s developer, Mohamed Mansour, has promised “I will maintain this version. Just bear with me” – so it looks like the battle is on!

At the time of writing this only works if you are using the English language version of Facebook. If you’re not used to browsing in English you could always change your language in your Account Settings, then switch back when you’re done.

Cat & Mouse

Grabbing your entire army of Facebook friends wasn’t so hard when Mansour originally released his extension only hours after Google+ opened up. All that was necessary was a trip to the Chrome Web Store with the extension easily installable with a click or two.

Now however Facebook has blocked Mansour’s original technique, class="vt-p" href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/116805285176805120365/posts/T6C2oTgMzVV">prompting him to comment via Google+:

style="padding-left: 30px;">This is what happens when your extension becomes famous :sigh: Facebook just removed the emails from their mobile site. They implemented a throttling mechanism that if you visit your ~5 friends in a short period of time, it will remove the email field.

style="padding-left: 30px;">No worries, a new version is on the making … I am bloody annoyed now, because this proves Facebook owns every users data on Facebook. You don’t own anything!

Annoyed yet? Well Mansour has promised to maintain his extension, and you’ll only need to do this once (successfully) in order to port your groupies. Let’s get started…

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/chromecomments.png?54167" alt="" width="502" height="249" />

Installing The Extension

As this is a game of cat and mouse, there’s every chance that the mouse might get ahead (in this instance Mansour) and the longer, slightly more complex technique I’m about to explain might not be necessary.

You can grab the extension directly from the Google Chrome Web Store class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ficlccidpkaiepnnboobcmafnnfoomga">here, and it’s definitely worth clicking Install to see whether or not the current version is working. It takes a few seconds, and if it doesn’t work you can disable the extension directly from your Extensions page in the Chrome settings menu.

To test it out, skip to the Exporting Your Friends section of this article now! If it didn’t work, welcome back – here’s the other way.

If this version is not working then Mansour also maintains the source code on GitHub, and this is your key to downloading the very latest versions that stand a better chance of actually working!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/archive.png?54167" alt="" width="550" height="377" />

First visit class="vt-p" href="https://github.com/mohamedmansour/fb-exporter">Mansour’s GitHub, click Downloads and choose either TAR.GZ or .ZIP archive format. Naturally, it doesn’t matter which you click provided you can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-top-3-file-compression-extraction-softwares/">open the archive afterwards. Once you’ve downloaded the file, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/extraction/">extract the folder within the archive to a location of your choice (somewhere you’ll remember).

Next open up Google Chrome and enter “ class="vt-p" href="chrome://extensions/">chrome://extensions“ (without quotation marks) into your address bar at which point you’ll be presented with a list of extensions currently installed. Click the Developer mode drop-down button on this page and choose Load unpacked extension.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/extensions.png?54167" alt="" width="552" height="152" />

Choose the folder you extracted only a moments ago (not the folder contents or any individual files, the whole folder) and the Facebook Friend Exporter should install itself and appear above the rest of your extensions. Good job, you’ve class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/compile-install-tar-gz-tar-bz2-files-ubuntu-linux/">installed from source!

Exporting Your Friends

Next you’ll want to visit Facebook and see whether it’s working or not. If all went well you should hopefully see a new Export friends! next to the usual Home and Profile buttons. For this to work you will need to be on your Friends page at class="vt-p" href="http://www.facebook.com/friends/edit/">facebook.com/friends/edit once logged in.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/facebookbutton.png?54167" alt="" width="417" height="88" />

Click Export friends! and a new tab should open with a disclaimer and terms of service for you to approve. Check the box and hit Let’s get started! to reveal your friends list. Finally it’s a case of one last click of let’s start! before Facebook Friend Exporter does its thing.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tandc.png?54167" alt="" width="469" height="309" />

The extension will begin crunching and notify you accordingly when a contact has been copied. You are reminded to leave Facebook alone during the duration of the process. Once completed you’ll be invited to download your Facebook contacts as a .CSV (comma separated value) file or import it directly into Gmail under the heading “Imported From Facebook”.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/pending.png?54167" alt="" width="561" height="126" />

You also have one last chance to uncheck any friends you simply don’t want to include in Google+ before you proceed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/alldone.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="176" />

Once imported to Gmail your contacts will appear on your Circles page, allowing you to sort through and add at your own free will, with Google firing out notifications to selected parties.

Conclusion

Unfortunately this migration process is touch-and-go and fairly fiddly in places. The extension itself might take a while to complete the process but once you’re done your next task is convincing your friends that Google+ is the way to go. If you really want them to get the message you could always set your profile picture as this article’s introduction image, something that’s been doing the rounds recently.

    SasuNaru- “Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend” (Yaoi/Yuri Contest)

    Watch in HD or HQ please~ Jeez, four f-ing times rendering. FOUR F-ING TIMES!!! Well I suppose I should be grateful it didn’t take any longer XDD OMG…It’s 2 mins long!!!!!!! *happy tears!* I’m s-so happy!! AND I made my very own love confession!! :3 I had to keep fixing it, for starters HD is being a weirdo on my weirdo Sony Vegas preview and I couldn’t see the whole screen. Then after I rendered it I found all the mistakes I didn’t see X_x It only took me…four days…*_* I’m amazed, I thought it would take so much longer but I did it and it turned out good! I set a record for myself~! Buuuuut, My computer got some damn adware shit, and I lost all my episodes DX; I download them as I go…BTW: When it goes: He goes left and you stay right, Yes, I know my left from my right but it didn’t look good the other way around so I kept it that way. Besides, I was also trying to keep it in Naruto’s POV as long as possible. I am slowly becoming addicted to SasuNaru, It’s like a Monster energy drink and pocky (omg, like a match mate in heaven!) But NaruHina has been my OTP since the day I first saw Naruto XD I finally got an excuse to use a Fray song as well 8D I love this band~ I was soooo close to using You found me or even Over my head but I was going around listening to songs and when I came across this one I just got inspired~ I’m sorry I’m spoiling you all with yaoi, I know a few of you are probably like “O_o wtf? submit something oher than yaoi for a damn minute would ya
