Apple Releases iTunes 10.4 With Full Screen Support, Updates iWork [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunesthumb.jpg?54167" alt="" />Just a few days after the introduction of Apple’s latest operating system, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apples-mac-osx-lion-news/">OS X Lion, the company has revealed a small update to iTunes 10.4. The update’s most obvious addition is a new full screen mode that works alongside Lion’s multi-touch support to provide a smooth, immersive experience. Users can navigate back to the desktop with a three-finger swipe, making for quick navigation between full screen iTunes and other applications.

The update also finally provides iTunes with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-32-bit-64-bit-windows/">64-bit support, a change that won’t have obvious short-term impact but is necessary for the software’s future development. Cupertino’s developers state that this improvement results in better performance and stability. However, the switch to 64-bit could potentially break class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">some iTunes plugins until they are updated.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/itunes104.jpg?54167" alt="" width="519" height="265" />

iWork has received an update to version 6, which provides the software with support for Lion’s new functionality. Resume, Auto Save, and Version features are now a part of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, making it easier for users to switch between documents and recover them should a crash or other error occur.

You’ll need Lion OS X to receive the full benefit of iTunes 10.4, but the software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or better. The update to iWork version 6 requires Mac OS X 10.6.6 or better, but most of the new features will not work without Lion.

    3 Ways To View Full RSS Feeds In Google Reader

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rss-300x300.png" alt="google reader full feed"/>I’m a big fan of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/rss/">RSS, let it be known. While some people are spouting rubbish about the days of feeds being over, devices that use and display these feeds in convenient ways are definitely giving RSS feeds a healthy comeback. For me, the idea of actually visiting the same website over and over in order to read the content is rather tedious – the idea that I have to bookmark each site and then click the bookmark to go and see what’s changed! If you ask me, bookmarks are dead, not RSS feeds.

    However, one problem I do constantly run into is sites that display an excerpt in the feed instead of the full content – even more frustrating if it’s a site that ONLY posts pictures – requiring you to click through to the slow-loading full site in order to view the picture. (Just so you know, MakeUseOf and the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/"> Geeky Fun section all produce full feeds for you to browse at your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-reader/">Google Reader leisure)

    Well, no problem. Today I’m going to show you 3 ways in which you grab the full feed from the partial feed – one website that could be used with any feed reader service or browser – one browser extension for Chrome and one for Firefox. If you’re using Internet Explorer, then stop it. It’s not a good browser by any standards, it’s the most insecure and the bane of every web developer with incompatible standards. Download href="http://www.google.com/chrome/">Chrome or href="http://getfirefox.com">Firefox now.

    href="http://fulltextrssfeed.com/">FullTextRssFeed.com

    We have introduced this in the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fulltextrssfeed-convert-partial-rss-feeds-to-full-text/">directory before (as well as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/fivefilter-full-text-feeds/">FiveFilter and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/wizardrss-full-rss-feeds/">WizardRSS), but this particularly site wins awards from me for the simplest and most beautiful interface. Open the site, paste in the feed URL of the crippled RSS and click submit. You can try with this fascinating UK news feed from the BBC if you like: http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/uk/rss.xml

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fullfeed1.png.png" alt="google reader full feed" width="580" height="120" />

    When the site comes back with the full feed – it’s quite speedy too – you can see a quick preview to make sure all is working well. then simply copy the URL it gives you above, and subscribe to that instead. If only everything on the internet was this simple, and worked so well.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fullfeed2.png" alt="google reader feeds full" width="580" height="365" />

    Chrome: Super Google Reader:

    href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/khbjahpecnkenngkidhioicnfpakihgo">Grab the extension from here and install.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/supereaderchromeinstall.png" alt="google reader feeds full" width="580" height="438" />

    Now, if you open Google Reader as normal, you should see a new Readable, Link and Feed tabs above each post. Feed is the default view which might only show you partial content for certain feeds. In this case, click on Link to be shown the actual page in context, including any banner ads or sidebar from the site in question – or click Readable to let the plugin have a shot at grabbing content intelligently.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/superreaderchrome.png" alt="google reader full feed" width="580" height="153" />

    During tests, I found that not all pictures were pulled in if it was a mixed text/media based article, but in general worked just fine – especially for sites that previously only allowed pictures to be shown when clicking through.

    Firefox: (not v.4)

    Firefox requires a little more work I’m afraid, but it is possible. Unfortunately, this method will only allow to use the iFrame tactic of loading the article from the actual site inside of Reader, rather than extracting the content – and it doesn’t work in Firefox 4 according to my tests.

    First up, you need to install href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/">GreaseMonkey extension that allows you to run user-submitted scripts, then install both href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76963">this and href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76964">this script. Now when you open Google Reader in Firefox, you’ll be able to enable full entry content on a folder or feed basis.

    Conclusion:

    If you love feeds as much as I do and regularly read through the news on your iPad or similar device, your best bet is to go through your feeds and replace them all with a href="http://fulltextrssfeed.com">fulltextrssfeed.com equivalent. The Chrome extension is nice, but given that most of my feed reading is done away from the PC it would be more effective to just change the URLs.

    If you know of a similar or better solution for Firefox – or even Opera as I know a few readers hate it when I forget that browser – do post your suggestions in the comments. Thanks! />

    How To Use Comments To Their Full Potential In Microsoft Word 2007+

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot3791.jpg" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="300" height="300" />Though Microsoft Word can sometimes feel like a big clunky program with too many bells and whistles, there are still some powerful time saving tools under its hood that you should know about. One of them is the Comments tool, which can be used sort of like little yellow sticky notes as you write, revise, and edit your research paper, manuscript, business report, or your next great novel.

    Comments in Word can serve many purposes, but they work like writing comments in the margins of a paper document. But of course, using Comments in Word, like other digital technology, provides a lot more than putting pen to paper. You can include external links to web resources, internal links to different parts of a document, and set up a pre-addressed email link for your readers. You can also send your Word file to someone or a group of people who in turn can add comments to your document.

    Adding Comments In Word 2011

    In Microsoft Word 2007-2011, you can add comments (when you’re writing in the Print Layout or Web Layout views) by first selecting one or more words in your document, and then clicking on Insert > New Comment in the menu bar. Note, I’m using Word 2011 for Mac for this tutorial, but the Comment tool and features are similar for the PC version of Word as well.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/newcomment.png" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="336" height="141" />

    You can of course access this tool in Word’s Toolbar, or what is called the Ribbon of Word 2010 or Mac 2011 edition, to create a new note using one single click. Or better yet, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-launch-any-windows-app-at-the-touch-of-a-button/">create a keyboard shortcut for the New Comment menu item (here’s how for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-secrets-of-mac-shortcuts/">Mac users).

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/makecomments.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="435" height="76" />

    When you add a note, you can write as much as you like in it. Your notes will appear as “balloons” on the side of the page where you selected to add the comment. All comments must be attached to piece of selected text. Comments are useful in the writing process for making notes to yourself, especially when you’re in the flow of writing and you don’t want to stop and check a fact or a resource. You can make a note to do it later.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/commentstoself.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="580" height="188" />

    You or another reader of your document could use Comments to ask questions, make suggested changes, or make references to other sources in your document. The comments you add don’t show up when you print your document.

    When your balloon comments get too distracting or take up too much precious space on the screen, you can simply click View > Markup to hide them. Do the same to bring them back. You can delete comments one at a time by clicking the “x” button in the upper-right of the Comment’s title bar.

    Adding Links To Comments

    URL Link

    What is useful about Comments is that you can include links to webpages, a mailto link, or links to designated parts of your existing document.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot378.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="514" height="107" />

    To add to a URL, select a piece of text, and add a comment note. Next, either type in your URL or locate the webpage and drag the URL into the note.

    Mailto Link

    Sometimes when another reader or editor of your document is reading your added comments, you might want them to contact you directly by email concerning something you wrote in the document. Considering how lazy we computer users have become, Word enables you to include a mailto link in a comment or attach it directly to piece of text. That way, the lazy reader doesn’t have to stop and create a new mail and add your or someone else’s designated address. You can do it all that work for them.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mailto-1.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="580" height="430" />

    To add a mailto link, select the Comment box and go to Insert > Hyperlink, or Command+K.  In the dialogue box, enter the email address and subject line of the pre-addressed email. If you want to get more fancy, notice that little ScreenTip button above? You can type in a custom message to the reader when they hover their cursor over the resulting link.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mailto2.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="448" height="169" />

    Now when a reader clicks on the mailto link, a new email will open with your address and subject line inserted for them, so they don’t have to take their precious time doing it themselves.

    Document Link

    If you’re creating a long document, say a 150-page dissertation, you’ll know how unwieldy things can become when you need to find and locate important parts of your text file. You could use a comment in one part of your document to link to another part. However, the process for doing this requires a few more steps to set up.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muo2.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="344" height="358" />

    First off, you need to create a bookmark(s) link to your document. To do this, select the text for the bookmark, and go to Insert > Bookmark. Change the “OLE_Link1” to a custom name. Click Add.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documentlink2.png" border="0" alt="Documentlink2" width="580" height="430" />

    When you want to add your document link in a comment or to a piece of selected text in your document, you need to click Insert > Hyper Link. Select the Document button. Click the Locate… button and your bookmarked anchor should be listed under bookmarks. Your bookmarked text will be highlighted in blue.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot380.png" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot380" width="391" height="355" />

    To remove hyperlinks, simply select the link and click Delete. Likewise, you can edit the Hyperlink by control-clicking on the link and choosing Insert > Edit Hyperlink.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/hyperlink3.png" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="580" height="114" />
