Steam Gets Mobile Apps For iOS & Android [News]

Valve’s ever-popular content delivery platform Steam has taken its first steps into the mobile world with the launch of two apps for iOS and Android users. Despite both being available for anyone to download on the App Store and Android Market, Valve have so far only allowed a small number of users use the service.

Currently in beta, both apps provide quick access to  friend statuses, chat and the store front where games can be purchased using saved credentials. In addition to this there is a “Friend Activity” area that logs purchases, achievements and other events and news sections for updates from blogs and Valve themselves.

As it stands these news sections are pretty bare, but the game catalogue is complete and fully functional, allowing for the purchase of full titles from your Android or iOS device. Valve’s president and co-founder, Gabe Newell, said:

Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale — these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam.”

Don’t worry if you’re not in the beta just yet, simply by downloading one of the apps and logging in (as well as providing the Steam Guard code sent to your email address) Valve will add you to the list of users awaiting beta entry.

If you’ve been lucky enough to get beta access already then let us know what you think!

StumbleUpon Gets Visually Appealing Makeover [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/stumbleupon_logo.png" alt="" />According to the online media research site, href="StumbleUpon Gets Visually Appealing Makeover">GigaOM, href="http://www.stumbleupon.com/home">StumbleUpon has surpassed Facebook as “the biggest traffic driver among social media websites in the US”.  StumbleUpon has always been one of the go-to sites for discovering new and interesting stuff on the Web, and recently the site has done a significant makeover that gives it a lot more visual appeal.

The new homepage of StumbleUpon replaces the predominately text-based layout (see first screenshot below) with attractive columns of high-quality images and photos linking to topics of interests for StumbleUpon members (second screenshot).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/screenshot16771.png" alt="Screenshot1677" width="580" height="372" border="0" />

A new “Explore Box” has also been added for making keyword and phrase searches. Unlike Google, when you do a search in StumbleUpon, you are taken directly to sites that other StumbleUpon members found interesting to recommend.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/screenshot1679.jpg" alt="Screenshot1679" width="580" height="453" border="0" />

This new design is more in line with the image-driven communication of most contemporary online websites, which often means a photo can draw your attention a lot faster than single columns of text.

As you click the “Stumble!” button in the drop-down menu of the site it begins to feel like you’re browsing a museum or exposition, because each click typically takes you to some very interesting places. You can like and dislike pages you “stumble upon”, and the ones you like get bookmarked to your account.

Another new feature added to the site are Channels, which are a collection of sites, people, and brands that you might find interesting.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/stumbleupon3.jpg" alt="Stumbleupon3" width="580" height="467" border="0" />

StumbleUpon also has a gorgeous href="http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stumbleupon-redesigns-launches-ipad-app-news/&sa=U&ei=TdLeTqGYNqLZiAKu1e3sCA&ved=0CAUQFjAA&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNH2T7J-RFxbaLBPLWeMK4C288mxCA">iPad app that includes all of the features of the online website.

Instapaper Gets A Huge Update On iOS Devices [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/instapaper-300x300.png" alt="" />Yet again, another iOS application pushes out a game changing update to go along with the release of Apple’s latest software version, iOS 5. The changes to this version of href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/instapaper/id288545208?mt=8">Instapaper are pretty extensive, and it is clear that Instapaper takes browsing your articles on iOS very seriously. The layout of the app has completely changed on iPad. Now it uses a grid instead of a list. Also, the layout has been cleaned up on the iPhone, though not as drastically.

In addition to improving the layout, many articles now feature the author’s name, as well as the website name and date, as long as it can extract that information. They also made some improvements to the scroll bar. Tapping and holding down on the article enables quick scroll. They also added brightness controls, so depending on the lighting conditions where you are reading, you can fine tune your experience.

They also made it easier to read footnotes in any article. Simply tap the screen. For most articles, the footnote will appear as a pop up, saving you from have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen.

iOS 5 added an OS wide dictionary, and if you prefer to use it, you can set up href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/instapaper/id288545208?mt=8">Instapaper to use it instead of their own in-app dictionary.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/mzl.esiijnrj.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="334" height="480" />

Lastly, you can now set up the app to pull in any links you like on Facebook, post to Twitter, or share on Tumblr.

For href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/instapaper/id288545208?mt=8">Instapaper diehards, this is a must-own.

How To Enable Facebook’s New “Timeline” Profile Right Now Before Anyone Else Gets It

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/facebook_logo_300x300.jpg" alt="" />Yesterday href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=10150289612087131">Facebook announced a host of new features in what was described by industry observers as the href="http://news.cnet.com/what-facebook-announced-at-f8-today/8301-1023_3-20110181-93.html">biggest shakeup in Facebook’s history.  Most of these changes are obviously due to the emerging and growing threat from href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-plus/">Google Plus, and one of the features that Mark Zuckerberg introduced was the radical redesign of the profile page.  It’s called the “ href="https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline">timeline” and it could prove to be the most controversial change of them all.

Not everyone has the timeline design yet and you may have to wait up to several weeks for it.  However, if you’re curious about how it looks on your profile and you want to try it out now, then here is how to do it.

Please note however that your new timeline page will only be viewable to those who also have the timeline design page.  Those who still have the old page design will continue to see your old page design until the timeline feature goes mainstream for everyone.

Step One – Authorise Facebook Developer To Access Your Account

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/permission.jpg" alt="" width="571" height="360" />

The first step is to sign up as a Facebook developer. This involves enabling and authorising Facebook Developer to access your Facebook account.  Just go href="https://developers.facebook.com/apps">here and click “allow“.

Create A New App

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb2.jpg" alt="" width="459" height="239" />

The next step is to create a new app.  Don’t panic, you’re not actually going to create one.  On this page, in the top right hand corner are two buttons – “edit app” and “create new app“.  Click “create new app“.

href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb3.jpg"> class="size-full wp-image-87725 aligncenter" title="fb3" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb3.jpg" alt="" width="587" height="202" />

This is the box that will come up next.  Simply put whatever you want into both boxes.  It doesn’t matter, as long as someone else hasn’t reserved the name.  It should also be at least 7 characters long.  As you can see, I put “coolmuoapp“which was the first thing that popped into my head.  Now click “continue“.

Clear The Captcha

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb4.jpg" alt="" width="586" height="232" />

Now you have to prove you’re human and not an automated bot.  Enter the captcha and hit “submit“.

Define An Action

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb5.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="308" />

OK, you’re almost finished.  In this final screen, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the “Open Graph” link in the top left hand corner of the page.  Click on that and you will get this :

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb6.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="375" />

All you have to do is choose an action in the first text field and choose an object in the second text field.  So I chose “watch” in the first text field and “movie” in the second.  Now press “get started“.

After processing that, Facebook will flip back to the Open Graph page (you may even get an error message) but you can now ignore all of that and head towards your Facebook profile.  Within a minute or two, you should receive an invitation to try out the timeline profile.  Click on that and you are in.  Here’s mine :

class="align-center aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/fb7.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="404" />

At the top, where I have chosen to upload a Highland cow (one of my favourite animals) is the area known as the “cover”.  This is where you can upload your own photo and really personalise your page.  You can let your imagination go completely riot and choose something that reflects your personality and who you are.

On the whole, the timeline profile is an interesting development but it is a radical departure from what the profile used to be like, so I am sure there will be lots of people who will vehemently hate the design.  But I would say give it a chance.

As the name “timeline” implies, you can move the slider back over every year you have had the Facebook profile and see all your old status messages.  I found it fascinating seeing what I posted years ago and laughing at some of the bad jokes that I posted (and some of the good ones too).

Let us know in the comments if you have any problems getting the timeline page, and also let us know if you either like or hate the new design.

How To Secure & Encrypt Your Information If Your Laptop Gets Stolen [Mac]

class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/macvirus.jpg" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop" width="260" height="198" />The FBI reports that 97% of stolen laptops are never recovered or returned to their owners. In this regard, MakeUseOf has published several articles about anti-theft tracking software, such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/adeona-stolen-laptop-tracker/">Adeona and  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/prey-project-track-your-stolen-laptop/">Prey. But to deal with the likelihood you may never recover your stolen or lost laptop, you will want to have a plan to secure sensitive information on the laptop.

Taking a few steps to pass lock, encrypt, hide, and most importantly back up the most important content on your laptop only takes a few minutes, and it can save you the agony of having sensitive information fall into the wrong hands. While the tools below are geared towards Mac users, similar tools are available for other users as well.

So let’s take a look at some of the things you can do right now to make an insurance policy against laptop theft.

id="more-61182">

Password Lock Your Laptop

For Mac laptop users, Apple includes a secure way to access your computer’s content.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/passwordprotect1.png" alt="how to secure laptop" width="580" height="413" />

Apple’s OS X security features can be found in System Preferences. The general password feature requires your account password in order for the computer to be used. You can set up this feature to automatically log out of your computer after a specified amount of time or after the screensaver or sleep begins before a password is required.

You will need to click the padlock icon at the bottom left in order to enable the settings and save them.

The FileVault feature encrypts all the information in your Home folder, and your login password is required in order to access your content.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/muoscreenshot45.png" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop from theft" width="580" height="262" />

Inputting a password each time you want to access your computer may seem like a hassle, but if your laptop is constantly vulnerable to theft, then these built-in features can be one of the first steps to securing your information when your laptop is stolen.

Encrypt Folder/Files

For very sensitive data in your laptop, you should consider further encrypting important data. For PC users, read Jim’s article on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/encrypted-folders-truecrypt-7/">How to Make Encrypted Folder Using Truecrypt 7.

For Mac users, you can create an encrypted disk image (DMG) (sort of like a folder) in which you can store sensitive data. Here’s how:

  • Launch Disk Utility (Applications folder > Utilities folder) on Mac.
  • Click on New > Blank Disk Image
  • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/diskimage.png" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop from theft" width="537" height="104" />

  • Enter the name for the disk image/folder in the Save As text field and save the DMG where you want.
  • style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/muoscreenshot461.png" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop from theft" width="518" height="236" />

  • Select a size for the image file from the Volume Size pop-up menu. If you will be encrypting simple document files, you may only need 500 MB. If you’re going to be adding audio and video files, you may need 2-8 GB.
  • Choose a volume format if you don’t want to use the default Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
  • Choose 128-bit AES (and/or 256-bit AES in Mac OS X 10.5 or later) from the Encryption pop-up menu to encrypt the image’s contents with a password. If you don’t choose an encryption, your new image won’t be encrypted.
  • Choose an image format. You can use “sparse disk image” for a disk image that only uses as much space as it needs, rather than a set amount of space. If you’re not sure, use the “read/write disk image” choice.
  • Click the Create button.
  • Enter and verify a class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1578">good password in the dialog window that appears. This password will be saved in your keychain by default, or you can deselect “Remember password (add to keychain)” if you don’t want that. You can store the password in the keychain both for convenience and for reducing risk of password loss.
  • style="text-align: left;">Click OK.

When the DMG is being created, you will be asked to enter a secure password. After doing so, do not check “Remember password in my keychain,” because your password will be automatically entered when the DMG is opened.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/passwordprotect.png" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop data" width="444" height="340" />

Now to secure your files, open the DMG. It will appear in the side bar of a Finder window under Devices.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dmgfile.png" border="0" alt="how to secure laptop" width="209" height="291" />

Drag into the DMG folder any files you want to secure and then eject the folder like you would any external hard drive.

To further secure your information in terms of files and folders, check out these how-to articles about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-lock-or-hide-a-folder-a-file-or-a-drive-on-the-computer/">hiding specified data and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-hide-files-and-folders-using-7-freeware-apps/">folders.

Let us know what other methods or free tools you have found useful for securing information on your laptop.

    Is There Any Way to Detect AdWare Before it Gets on Your PC?

    Copyright (c) 2009 Graham McKenzie

    Have you ever opened a website and immediately seen half a dozen small windows pop up in front of you about anything from male enhancement to online dating?

    These popups are powered by AdWare, small bits and pieces of software that websites will download to your computer through the web browser’s built in data caching – cookies and old files. While most of the time AdWare doesn’t cause any long term damage to your computer, it can severely slow down its performance and get in your way over and over again – blocking your view of the content on the screen.

    So, it is no small wonder that many people wonder if there is an effective way to detect and abolish AdWare before it even gets onto their PC. Luckily, there are options out there that can help you.

    To start with, users should follow a few simple rules that will mitigate how often AdWare can even become a problem. Certain websites pose larger problems than others and should be avoided at all costs. This includes websites with picture, video, or music downloads of any kind, forums that are not part of a larger, official website, anything related to spam topics like gambling, dating, or pharmaceuticals, and most online dating websites. You’re going to find that the vast majority of AdWare will come from these types of sites – if you avoid them, you cut out the chance of it getting through.

    However, for the small percentage of remaining AdWare that can get into your computer, there are options to detect it. Most modern browsers come with some form of AdWare protection, allowing you to see which websites you are about to visit might be high risk. By turning on these features, you can ensure that you get a warning before you enter a site that might cause problems to your computer.

    The best way to detect and block AdWare from getting into your computer though is to have a good anti-AdWare software installed that will work whenever the computer is on to detect potential AdWare, and block or delete it before it reaches your computer.

    This software will remain on at all times, usually in the taskbar at the bottom right hand of your computer. Whenever you open a website, download a file, or open an email, it will scan the contents of those files and tell you if there is anything to be concerned with. In small cases, it will block unwanted downloads of AdWare files and in more severe cases it will warn you about an infection and quarantine or delete the file much in the same way that anti-Virus software operates.

    By combining common sense, a careful eye for high risk websites and a good piece of anti-AdWare software, you can keep your computer safe from any number of unwanted popups, infectious files and annoying AdWare that will slow you down and get in the way.

    Partition Recovery When Windows Boot Record Gets Damaged

    In Microsoft Windows computer, boot record is the most critical data structure that enables booting of your system and make your system usable. In some situations, when you start your Microsoft Windows computer, you might find some errors related to missing boot record. These errors prevent you from booting your system properly and access hard drive partitions. This behavior renders all of the hard drive partitions inaccessible and cause severe partition loss. In such critical circumstances, Windows Partition Recovery become essential to get your valuable data back.

    In a practical scenario, you might come across below error message while trying to boot your Windows-based computer:

    “Searching for Boot Record from CD/DVD.. Not Found

    Searching for Boot Record from BBS-0: [Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082) ] OK

    Searching for Boot Record from SCSI.. Not Found

    Boot Failure
    Reboot and Select proper Boot device

    or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device

    Press any key when ready”

    At this point, you need to find out the cause of this behavior and then resolve it by carrying out Partition Recovery.

    Root of the issue

    As stated in the above error message, this issue occurs due to damaged or missing boot record of your Windows computer. The corruption might take place due to virus infection, improper system shutdown, hardware problems, damaged system data structures or invalid settings in system BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).

    Resolution

    First of all, check the BIOS settings to see whether the S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) feature is enabled. Disable it and then try to start your system. If the problem persists, this feature is outdated. After that, check the boot sequence settings of your system. If you are still getting the same problem, hard drive formatting is required.

    Although, formatting is able to remove all of the hard drive errors and make your system usable in majority of situations, but it also has a downside. It removes all of the hard drive partitions and cause complete partition loss. Such cases require Partition Recovery Software for absolute, quick and easy recovery of lost partitions.

    The Partition Recovery applications are capable of thoroughly scanning the affected hard drive and recover all of the lost partitions. These tools are completely safe and easy to use.

    Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most effective and powerful application for quick and simple recovery. It supports recovery of FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system partitions. The software is designed for Microsoft Windows 7 RC1, Vista, 2003, XP and 2000.

    iPod 5th Gen Nano Gets FM Radio!

    The wait is finally over.

    It is like we’ve been forever waiting for the icon of the portable mp3 player to add a FM tuner. The wait is finally over. Apple’s launch this week of its fifth-generation iPod Nano, the first iPod to include a video camera and a FM tuner drew the attention of tech nerds and bloggers. The video camera would come in handy but the FM tuner was the much anticipated addition! Yes, we can listen to our favorite radio stations once again with this new feature without carrying another cheap mp3 player along us.

    How does it work?

    The navigation between stations is ‘iPod’ easy! It is really cool to note that the earphones act as antennas receiving the signal for the FM tuner. This newly launched FM tuner also enables DVR-like, on-demand functionality to live radio, allowing listeners to pause a song from a live radio feed, rewind it or resume listening after switching to another station. Yes, you can pause live radio! Apple is calling this cool new feature as “Live Pause”. Additionally, there is also a feature to tag your favorite songs which are added to the iTunes (when we sync), where it can be bought later via “Buy from FM” platform.

    What next?

    Oh, did I mention that this new iPod has a built-in pedometer too? You can take a walk with your little iPod listening to your favorite songs (or radio!) and at the same time measuring the number of steps you have walked. Okay, now that this little device has so many cool things stuffed like a Christmas stocking, I was wondering what else could be added? I am sure that you would agree that Apple should add a FM transmitter along with the FM tuner. Personally, I am tired of these cheap FM transmitters that do not transmit quality sound to my car speakers. If apple can add that feature to the Nano, it will definitely make the long car rides more pleasurable.
