Making 8bit Music: An Introduction To Free Chiptune Music Trackers

A few months ago I wrote an article highlighting some of the best resources on the web for finding 8bit music, all manner of MOD files and the software required for playback. Today I’m going to be venturing a little deeper and digging out the tools you’ll be needing in order to create some chiptune yourself.

The modern MOD-scene is a friendly, care-and-share alike community consisting of programmers producing free software, composers sharing their music for free and those who simply love the music. Thanks to software emulation, there’s no need for original hardware any more – though many do still insist on using classic technology for their musical needs.

This will be a two-part guide, with hardware, samples and VSTs coming next week.

Trackers & Making Music

A tracker is not an absolute necessity for creating 8bit, and many people get away with using digital audio solutions like FLStudio or Audacity. However, If you’re really serious about creating 8bit music then you’re going to want to learn how to use a tracker.

Whilst each tracker is different, the methodology behind making music is virtually identical on each piece of software. The most noticeable difference between standard audio software and a music tracker is the way the track is constructed – vertically, as opposed to horizontally – but there’s far more to it than that.

There are 6 main characteristics common to music trackers: tracks (channels), samples, notes, effects, patterns and orders. Tracks are the vertical strips onto which you construct the music, and whilst trackers of old only had a limited amount of available tracks the modern offerings have vastly improved on this. Samples are sound recordings that must be imported (and sometimes generated in-tracker) in order to construct  music.

Notes then adjust the pitch of the samples in order to match them to musical notes, allowing you to construct complex patterns of varying notes with only a handful of samples. Effects go hand in hand with notes, as these are commands added to the end of the note to instruct it to play arpeggio, vibrato, portamento and so on.

A pattern consists of multiple tracks playing at once to make up part of a song, whilst the order defines when each pattern plays, for how long and specifying other options like whether each pattern should be looped or not. These are the basics, and once they’re firmly implanted in your head then the only thing holding you back is your imagination and eagerness to experiment.

Software

Here are some of the best, completely free music trackers as well as relevant documentation where available.

OpenMPT (Windows) [Official Documentation]

Based on ModPlug Tracker, OpenMPT (Open ModPlug Tracker) builds on this release with a number of awesome features including support for VST effects and instruments. VST stands for virtual studio technology and allows instruments such as synthesizers and drum kits as well as a number of effects to be used in OpenMPT. This is somewhat special as I haven’t found any other free trackers that provide support.

OpenMPT continues the 8bit revival by supporting a number of newer file formats including Impulse Tracker (.IT/.ITP files) as well as good old fashioned (but somewhat limiting at times) .MOD and .XM files. OpenMPT is currently only designed to be used with Windows, and unfortunately I had a lot of trouble getting this to work through WINE on Linux.

One of the most complete, powerful and user-friendly trackers out there.

MilkyTracker (Windows, Mac, Linux) [Official Manual, Unofficial Tutorial]

Another much-loved tracker, MilkyTracker attempts to be a faithful recreation of the popular DOS tracker, FastTracker 2. It also aims to satiate Amiga fans, providing enhanced playback compatibility with the Amiga classic ProTracker. MilkyTracker is able to create .MOD and .XM tracks, has a unique custom user interface and supports MIDI-in.

MilkyTracker has not made the leaps forward that OpenMPT has in the form of VSTs and advanced formats, and this is because it has been designed to be and remain a second generation tracker.

SunVox (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android) [Official Manual, Video Tutorials]

SunVox aims to be a more contained workstation than Milky or OpenMPT and to achieve this there are a lot of synthesizers and effects bundled from the get-go. In addition to this the software has a particularly flexible architecture, allowing it to perform well on older machines, mobile devices and even smartphones.

Indeed, there are iOS and Android versions available – but they’re going to cost you. If you’re weighing up the purchase then luckily all other versions are free. If you’ve still got an old Windows Mobile or PalmOS device then you’ll be pleased to know SunVox is fully compatible, so why not try it out!

SchismTracker (Windows, Mac, Linux + more) [FAQ, Message Board]

SchismTracker is a free Impulse Tracker clone that aims to recreate the feel and functionality seen in the old DOS application. Whilst Impulse Tracker doesn’t add anything particularly new to the plate (unlike ChibiTracker above) it is very flexible in construction, and according to the author: “Schism will most likely build on any architecture supported by GCC4 (e.g. alpha, m68k, arm, etc.)”

As well as Windows, Mac and a handful of Linux distributions, SchismTracker can be downloaded for the Pandora and even the Nintendo Wii (though that version is no longer supported).

SonantLive (Browser) [Instructions]

Because you want to play with a tracker and you’re too impatient to download a portable app and run it – introducing SonantLive, a music tracker than runs in your browser! Yes, it works and should give you a basic introduction to patterns, sequences, waves and of course the process behind constructing a pattern.

It’s not necessarily as powerful as the other trackers on this list but then again it’s web-based, designed for fun and completely free. You can even save and load!

Conclusion

There’s simply not enough space here to go into hardware chiptune, the many free samples the web has to offer or all the gorgeous VST instruments and effects that are floating around for free. You’re going to have to wait for next week in order to enjoy those.

In the meanwhile if you’ve got any other trackers or software you rely on for your chiptune needs then don’t hesitate to add them in the comments below.

Learn to Automate Your Mac with AppleScript [Part 1: Introduction]

style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/applescript1.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>Most computer users know how tedious it can be to perform menial and repetitive tasks like launching applications and web pages, inserting data into text fields, resizing image files, and typing out frequently used words.

Many of us perform larger and more intensive tasks involving two or more applications and several clicks or keyboard shortcuts. That’s why applications like Apple‘s classic AppleScript application has been a favorite among many users because of it’s almost English-like programming language.

id="more-56126"> /> AppleScript is an automation program which though it’s not as user-friendly as Apple‘s drag-and-drop href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/automator">Automator program, it is much faster and it allows you to build complex automations.

AppleScript comes installed by default in all version Apple‘s OS X software, and there are many resourceful websites which can help you learn how to use the program.

If you’re new to AppleScript and are curious about it, let’s take a few minutes to see what it has to offer.

AppleScript In Action

AppleScript can be found the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder of your Mac. Launch AppleScript so that you can get started with some pre-installed scripts. (By the way, you might want to drag AppleScript to your dock so that you can easily access it during and after this tutorial. You can also just drag the application out of the utilities folder and put it in the list of other applications.)

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/preferences2.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>

After you launch AppleScript, open its Preferences and click the “Show Script menu in menu bar” and “Show Computer scripts” boxes.

In your Finder’s menu bar, you’ll see the AppleScript folder icon. Click on it and then select Default Actions > Info Scripts folder. (Notice also that there’s a menu item titled, Open AppleScript Editor, which is another way you can launch AppleScript.)

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/currentdatetime.jpg" alt="how to applescript"/>

Now click on the Current Date & Time script, and it should display that information with an option to copy that data to your clipboard. That is just one very small example of what AppleScript can do.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/datetimes.png" alt="how to applescript"/>

Now go back and click on the Info Scripts folder again, but this time just click and release on the folder itself so that it will open.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/datetimescript.jpg" alt="how to applescript"/>

Double-click on the Current Date & Time script to open it in the AppleScript Editor. Underneath some copyright language, you’ll see the lines of script that caused the data to display. As you read each line of the script, you’ll see that many parts of it read almost like a regular English sentence (e.g., “display dialog the date_stamp buttons {“Clipboard”, “OK”) default button 2“).

For an AppleScript beginner, this code may appear a little too complex, but it’s certainly easier to understand than many other programming languages, such as Objective-C.

Opening Web Sites

Okay, let’s run an easier script. Go back to the AppleScript folders in the menu bar and select Default Actions > URLs. Open the folder and then click on one of the scripts, such as “Apple Store.scpt“.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/openapplesite.png" alt="how to write applescript"/>

Click the Run button in the toolbar and AppleScript should launch the targeted URL.

There’s another way to write that script so that it makes a little more sense. Let’s learn how. Select File > New in AppleScript and type, or copy and paste, the following lines of script exactly:

style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 41.6px; text-indent: -41.6px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;">tell style="color: #2c12fe;">application “Safari”

style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 83.2px; text-indent: -83.2px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; color: #2c12fe; text-align: center;"> style="color: #000000;"> style="white-space: pre;"> activate

style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 83.2px; text-indent: -83.2px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;"> style="white-space: pre;"> style="color: #1e21bd;">open location “http://www.apple.com/”

style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 41.6px; text-indent: -41.6px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; text-align: center;">end tell

If you want, you can add several more URLs using the same line of instructions, (e.g. “open location “http://www.makeuseof.com”) and then save the script as an application in order to launch all your targeted URLs at once.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/saveasapp.png" alt="applescript tutorial"/>

Okay, let’s stop for now. In part 2 of this article, I will present some really cool, simple, and practical AppleScripts, and also tell you where you can find more information to start learning the language.

If you use AppleScript, let us know about a few of your favorite automations.

    Windows XP: A Basic Introduction

    Microsoft has been a leading provider of many computer and Internet products and services. They may be best known for their operation system (OS), Windows, especially XP, released in 2001. In fact, more people use Windows operating systems (as opposed to Mac, Linux, or another lesser known OS) than all other operating systems combined. Windows XP is currently being used by more people than all the Windows OS’s combined, not to mention claims about 60 percent of the entire OS market shares.

    One of the quickest ways to identify the Windows XP is by the green start button and blue taskbar on the bottom of your computer screen, but it is responsible for much more than that. Microsoft in a way started over with the way they presented operating systems for their users.

    Before XP (short for “experience”), there were two strands of operating systems in use by computer users in the late 90′s—one was a business/networking friendly version known as Windows NT (which was upgraded to Windows 2000, in the year 2000). The other version was a consumer friendly version known as Windows 98 (succeeded by Windows ME, also in 2000).

    Microsoft not only greatly improved the performance and, what they considered to be a vast improvement to usability, XP also replaced the two “strands” of Windows OS’s into one operating system. XP is alternatively named “Windows 5.1” because it follows the Windows NT code base and is the successor to the NT based Windows 2000 (or, Windows 5.0).

    There are multiple versions of XP, but the two most popular are Windows XP Professional Edition (similar to the Windows 2000 format), and Windows XP Home Edition (to replace 98 and ME), but every version is highly similar in the look and feel of XP. The most obvious difference in XP and all its predecessors is the major changes in the GUI, or graphical user interface. The colors, design, even shadows are significant improvements to the “aesthetic” quality, although this is a “classic” option to revert to the Windows 2000 look.

    The most important reason for all the changes in the GUI was to improve the usability of all its features, especially for those who are new to computers. Options from the start menu, to the placements of icons and options were “optimized” to make computing simple to do and easy to understand (of course, these improvements may not be appreciated by those who have become accustomed to using a previous version of Windows, so not everyone agrees on the value of them).

    The Control Panel, for example, was changed from previous versions to having two views.  The “Classic View” just like the older versions that listed all the options in thumbnails in alphabetical order, and the “Category View” groups similar icons together to help users know where to find the controls they want.

    Several upgrades to XP, called a service pack (SP), have been released since the original 2001 release. These are basically security and stability fixes that were available for free from the Microsoft website or as an automatic update. The last upgrade, service pack 3 had over 1,100  fixes! XP SP3 is the only version of XP that is still supported by Microsoft. According to the company, Microsoft will continue supporting (and provides free updates for) XP SP3 until April 2014, even though two newer operating systems, Vista and Windows 7, have already been released.

    Introduction to Web Browsers

    Web Browsers have come a long way from the days of the first internet web browser, Mosaic and the like. The monopoly of the Microsoft-authored Internet Explorer has been decisively broken and terminated possibly, forever. Web browsers today have progressed from being a mere internet-exploring tool to being a multi-purpose, multi-pronged application that brings several advantages to the web visitor. A web browser is defined as a software application, a typical HTTP client that helps the internet visitor to interpret the HTML documents and display the content from web servers or in file systems.Today there are a variety of internet browsers available. The prominent browsers available for personal computers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox Opera Netscape and so on. A browser is the most commonly used kind of user agent. The largest networked collection of linked documents is known as the World Wide Web.

    Web browsers communicate with web servers primarily using HTTP (hyper-text transfer protocol) to fetch webpages. HTTP allows web browsers to submit information to web servers as well as fetch web pages from them. The most commonly used HTTP is HTTP/1.1. Web Pages are located by means of a URL (uniform resource locator), which is treated as an address, beginning with http: for HTTP access. Many browsers also support a variety of other URL types and their corresponding protocols, such as ftp: for FTP (file transfer protocol), gopher: for Gopher, and https: for HTTPS (an SSL encrypted version of HTTP).

    The generally accepted file format for a web page is usually HTML (hyper-text markup language) and is identified in the HTTP protocol using a MIME content type. Most browsers certainly support other technology formats in addition to HTML, such as the JPEG PNG and GIF image formats, and can be extended to support more through the use of plugins. The combination of HTTP content type and URL protocol specification allows web page designers to embed images, animations, video, sound, and streaming media into a web page, or to make them accessible through the web page.

    In the beginning web browsers supported only a very simple version of HTML. The rapid development of web browsers led to the development of HTML into a more complex avatars. Modern web browsers support standards-based HTML and XHTML which should display in the same way across all browsers. Web sites today are designed using WYSIWYG HTML generation programs such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage. There are continuous development activities in developing standards, specifically with XHTML and CSS (cascading style sheets, used for page layout). Some of the more popular browsers include additional components to support Usenet news, IRC (Internet relay chat), and e-mail. Protocols supported may include NNTP (network news transfer protocol), SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol), IMAP (Internet message access protocol), and POP (post office protocol).

    Different browsers have uniqueness built in because of the very features that they provide and very functions that they support. Modern browsers and web pages tend to utilize many features and techniques that did not exist in the early days of the web. The following is a list of some of the most notable features:

    - HTTP and HTTPS
    - HTML, XMLand XHTML
    - GIF, PNGJPEG and SVG
    - Cascading Style Sheets
    - JavaScript
    - Digital certificates
    - RSS
    - Bookmarks
    - Caching
    - Plugins like Macromedia Flash and Quick Time.

    Other features generally include:
    - Autocomplete
    - Tabbed browsing
    - Spatial navigation
    - Caret navigation
    - Screen reader
    - Pop-up Blocker
    - Ad filtering
    - Phishing

    Web Browsers have today established themselves as a most user-friendly and essential technology tool for surfing the internet. Web browsers help the visitors to the ethereal world of the web to view contents from different file formats, interact with other websites, incorporate appropriate technology to view/download/upload multi-media content and streaming multi-media. Web browsers today provide functionalities like blocking of unwanted pop-up advertisements, spywares and phishing attempts. They provide the convenience of tabbed browsing and come with advanced features like auto-fill and password and download managers.

    Web browsers of today are not mere messengers between client and server. They are full-fledged programs capable of using fuzzy logic to select most appropriate content and help the web visitor to browse safely and pleasurably.

    Troubleshooting Microsoft Windows Vista (5 Part Series) – Introduction

    Computer troubleshooting is in many ways more art than science; it’s more of a marriage between your basic computer understanding and all the peculiarities of your specific environment. Truth be told, this series of articles actually possesses very little capability in terms of helping you troubleshoot your network. What it can do, however, is get you pointed in the right direction so that you have a better idea of the troubleshooting resources that are at your fingertips within Vista.

    Of course, there’s no way any computer article can possibly foresee every possible computer troubleshooting scenario. If you want to really know whether a particular troubleshooting approach will work, my best advice is to give it a try. It’s just a machine, after all, and you aren’t going to break it with a few clicks of the mouse.

    OK, you might break it, but if you follow some of the advice laid out in this article, you shouldn’t be able to do anything that you can’t undo. Here, we focus mainly on some of the troubleshooting tools that Windows Vista places in the hands of the administrator. As always, the focus is mainly on what’s new: we will examine a new utility called Problem Reports and Solutions, and I’ll bet you don’t need to read much further to guess what the nature of that one is. Also, we’ll explore some tools that an administrator might already know from previous operating systems like the System Restore utility, and we’ll look at situations in which System Restore just might save the day.

    In this 5-part series of articles, we will discuss the various tools available for troubleshooting within Windows Vista. As I’m sure you’re aware, this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. If you’d like to get my entire book “Windows Vista Administration: The Definitive Guide” by Brian Culp, Publisher: O’Reilly, ISBN-13: 978-0-59-652959-8 (or any of my 20+ other books and tutorials), you can pick it up at my website, www.TheAnswerHub.com or at most major book chains. In addition, I’m always happy to provide additional assistance for free (within reason, mind you…don’t go thinking this is some sort of a free ride). Visit me at my website and submit your questions to me. I’ll get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.

    Up next: we start with a look at a troubleshooting task that is meant to prevent many problems from happening in the first place. It’s the Vista Automatic Updates, which Vista admins should absolutely use to enforce good preventive health.
