Taking Free Classes & Courses At iTunes U [iPad, iPhone & iPod touch]

free itunes classesAt Apple’s recent live event at the Guggenheim in New York to launch its most recent application, iBooks Author, the company also used the occasion to introduce another education related iOS 5 app and iTunes service called iTunes U.

For several years now, colleges and universities have posted for free academic courses via iTunes podcasts. But now in iTunes U, Apple is expanding the service by providing access to complete courses from leading universities and other schools.

For now the courses are completely free–requiring only your time to work through the lectures and assignments.

iTunes App

The iTunes U app can be used on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. When you subscribe to a coure all the core material for the course will be automatically downloaded to the app on your device.

free itunes classes

Links to supplemental material will also be provided for download from the App Store, the iBookstore, and the iTunes Music Store. While the supplemental material may come at a cost, most of the video lectures and PDF document handouts seem to be available for free.

itunes free classes

The beauty of iTunes U is how it packages core material into one application. A downloaded course typically includes a brief overview, a detailed course outline of lectures and assignments, a built-in Notepad, and links to course materials. The interface and setup is similar to how you might organize an analog three-ring binder.

itunes free classes

Though courses are best viewed on the iPad, you can sync your notes and course information between your iOS devices. Unfortunately, however, Apple has not created a Mac client for iTunes U. Nor has it done so for its iBooks 2 textbook reader.

itunes free classes

You can access and view all the courses in iTunes U either through the iTunes U application itself, or in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iTunes U already includes several dozen courses on a wide range of topics—from Basics of Culinary, Beginners Chinese, Masters of Photography, to Stanford University’s highly rated iPad and iPhone App Development course.

Standford CS193p

The Stanford apps development course, for example, includes 19 actual live lectures, slide show presentations, in course assignments.

free online classes

Even better, the course doesn’t require you to purchase any additional supplemental material. And if you’re running OS X Lion you can download Apple’s app developers application Xcode for free from the App Store. All that is required on your part for this course is your time.

Copyright Course

Another interesting though lightweight course, titled Rights, Remixes, and Respect, is a five part series about the differences between creative inspiration, appropriation, copyright and fair use.

free online classes

Kirby Ferguson, the developer for this course, provides short definitions of copyright related terms, and then presents excellent song and movie examples about sampling and remixing and creative productions. His video presentations are are linked to a website which means you don’t have to download those files to your device.

free online classes

You can work through the course in less than a week, and it even ends with a couple of short quiz reviews. The course also requires a few paid download of songs from the iTunes Music Store.

Notepad

Another useful and practical tool in the iTunes U app is a built-in notepad. If you want to do pretty much all your work within your mobile device, this notepad will come in quite handy. It works similarly to to the default Notepad app in Apple’s mobile devices.

free itunes classes

While iTunes U will never be as popular as the iTunes Music Store or the App Store, it’s a great opportunity and resource for self-motivated learning. And because courses are free, you learn as much as you like without taking out a student loan.

Let us know what you think of iTunes U.

Apple is Offering Free Replacement For 1st Generation iPod Nano [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ipod-nano5.png" alt="" />As rare as it is for Apple to publicly admit a malfunction, this one is too big to overlook. According to Apple, the batteries of some first generation iPod nanos may overheat and become a safety risk. While this is a rare occurrence, Apple has decided not to take risks this time. If you own a first gen iPod nano, check out Apple’s href="http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/">replacement program.

The iPods in question are ones that were manufactured between September 2005 and December 2006, and they are all traced back to a single supplier which apparently produced faulty batteries. To help you decide whether you own the right iPod nano, you can check if it has a plastic black or white front and a silver metal back. If it does, you’re holding a 1st gen Nano.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ipod-nano-serial.png" alt="ipod-nano-serial" width="469" height="431" border="0" />

If you think you own one of the faulty devices, you can use Apple’s wizard to enter its serial number and see whether you should send it back for a new one. The program is only offered in 20 countries, and you’d need to choose your country before you can enter your serial number. If you are eligible, you will receive your new device approximately 6 weeks after Apple receives your faulty Nano. Note that if your iPod is engraved, the replacement unit will not have the engraving.

Don’t forget to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-your-ipod-with-sharepod/">back up your iPod fully before sending it out!

7 “Hidden” iOS 5 Features You Might Have Missed [iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/logo.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" /> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios">iOS 5 added so many features, tweaks and improvements to Apple’s mobile operating system that many inclusions seem to have gone by unannounced. Everyone (including us) has been href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/notified-revamped-notification-center-ios-5/">raving about the new Notification Center, the 4S href="http://www.makeuseof.com/?p=90999">battery drain feature (!) and the fact that you no longer need href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-sync-your-itunes-library-with-your-music-folders/">iTunes to update, but what else is new?

In their marketing spiel, Apple were quick to claim “over 200 new features” had made their way into the update, except they never really explained what they all did. Here I’m hoping to shine some light on a few of the more useful, hidden iOS features you might not have noticed yet. iDevices at the ready!

Keyboard Shortcuts

Under Settings, General and then Keyboard it is possible to define words you wish to use as shortcuts for longer words or phrases. As you can see, Apple has added the first for you – when typed, “omw” changes to “On my way!” making it easier and faster to type out commonly used phrases in a message or email.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/keyboardshortcuts.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

These shortcuts are naturally system-wide, and new ones can be added via the Add New Shortcut… button. Useful shortcuts could include “mymail” for your full email address, “myblog” for your website URL and classics like “ttyl” and “glhf” for the gamers out there.

Custom Vibration Patterns

By far one of the coolest (if a little pointless, I digress) new features in iOS 5 is the ability to customise or create your very own vibration patterns. To enable custom vibrations navigate to Settings, General then Accessibility where you will find a Custom Vibrations option. Enable it and return to Settings then Sound where there is now an option at the bottom of the screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/vibrationpatterns.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

Tap it to choose from any of the five in-built patterns, or touch Create New Vibration to record your own. Hit Save once you’re happy with your creation to set it as default. This won’t be the most frequently used feature on your phone, though it can be handy if you find yourself constantly missing alerts.

AssistiveTouch

iPad owners are lucky enough to be able to use a few multi-touch gestures off the bat (more on this later) but did you know all iOS devices can make use of AssistiveTouch and its custom gestures? Under Settings, General then Accessibility choose AssistiveTouch and notice the small icon in the bottom right hand corner.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assistivetouch.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

Touch it and you’ll get quick access to your home screen, favourites and of course gestures. These can be defined by tapping Create New Gesture and dragging out a pattern with your finger. Give it a name and function and you’ve got yourself some gesture-based shortcuts.

Speak Selection & Voice Over

Two brand new talking innovations that made it into iOS 5 are Speak Selection and VoiceOver which can both be found under Settings, General then Accessibility (and both need to be enabled before you can use them).

Speak Selection adds a “Speak” option to any text that you select (be it a webpage, an email or a message you’re still typing) before reading the whole thing back to you at a swift pace. The speaking rate can be modified in the same settings menu as above.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/speakselection.jpg" alt="ios features list" width="320" height="480" />

VoiceOver is another potentially useful speaking option, and one that is especially handy for those with poor eyesight who have difficulty navigating their device. This feature simply reads aloud from the screen you are on, listing options and other notes. Both are particularly great at what they do, making your iOS device quite the conversationalist!

Custom Alerts

At long last it is possible to change the default alerts that were previously locked to default iOS sounds. These options can be found under Settings then Sounds and include Sent/Received Mail tones, Message tones, Calendar/Reminder alerts and a tweet tone.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/customalerts.jpg" alt="ios features" width="320" height="480" />

If you find you’re still missing notifications you can try turning on LED Flash for Alerts under Settings, General then Accessibility. This will flash your camera LED when your phone receives a notification, but be aware your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-ways-boost-cell-phone-battery-life-iphone-android-smartphones/">battery life will probably be affected too.

In-Built Dictionary

Another useful feature that made its way into this release is the in-built dictionary which allows you to select a word using the standard text select method and tap Define in order to check its meaning and pronunciation.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/dictionary.jpg" alt="hidden ios features" width="320" height="480" />

There is no way to access the dictionary other than via the context menu once a word has been selected.

iPad Specifics

Those of you lucky enough to own an iPad will enjoy the few iPad-specific enhancements that iOS 5 has to offer. Multi-touch gestures are now here to stay, and you can use four or five fingers to pinch to reveal the home screen, scroll up to reveal the app-switcher (as opposed to double tapping the Home button) and scroll left or right to switch between apps.

The other feature worth noting is the split keyboard option which is accessed by holding the bottom left icon on the keyboard in typing mode and choosing Split. This makes typing with your thumbs far more accessible, and the keyboard can even be undocked (hold the button again) in case it’s in your way.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the fabled 200+ enhancements Apple managed to squeeze into href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/started-ios-5-update/">the most exciting version of iOS yet. If you know of any others then please don’t hesitate in sharing them in the comments below.

How To Stream Music & Video To Your iPhone, iPod Touch Or iPad From A Mac Or Windows PC [iOS]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/intro13.jpg" alt="" />An issue I encountered when I first received my iPhone was the inability to stream my fairly well-organised music and video collection direct to my new device. I don’t use iTunes other than on my iPhone for the odd podcast, mainly because I’m primarily a Linux user (though there are a handful of Windows PCs scattered around the house).

Unfortunately very little exists to stream via Linux to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ios">iOS, so instead I thought I would try class="vt-p" href="http://www.airplayit.com/">Air Playit for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/windows">Windows and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/mac">Mac OS X. Developed by Digiarty Software, Air Playit is both a server (to be installed on your PC) and a mobile application (to be used on your iPhone or similar). The set-up process is a breeze, and the software supports both local and remote sharing to boot.

Download & Configure Your Server

Without further ado, download the server for your operating system from the appropriate link below:

  • Air Playit Server: class="vt-p" href="http://www.airplayit.com/download/airplayitserver_setup.exe">Windows (32 & 64bit) / class="vt-p" href="http://www.airplayit.com/download/airplayit_macserver.dmg">Mac OS X

Once your download has completed, run the file, complete the installer and launch the server. Windows users may be prompted to create an exception for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-windows-firewall-windows-7-firewall-control/">Windows Firewall, so make sure you grant access should you use it.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/windowsfirewall.jpg" alt="" width="551" height="399" />

The first screen you will see is a registration form, which you can fill in or opt to ignore by clicking Do not show again. Once you have dismissed the dialogue, take a good look at the server which should already be running under the name of your computer.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/serverstart.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="446" />

There are 6 different tabs in total, and these are:

  • Information – This screen provides server information, including IP address and server name.
  • Permission – Here is where you can grant access to different user groups, including admin, kids and public. By default, public users are allowed on your server without entering a PIN.
  • Shared Folders – This is where your media is located.
  • Conversion – An offline video converter for converting to mobile-friendly formats for downloading videos in your collection.
  • Web – A fully-fledged web UI for your server (requires activation).
  • Setting – A few options to tweak and change should you wish.

The next step is configuring your server. Add shares on the Shares tab by clicking Add Folder, locating and naming your share. Supported audio formats are MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV and video support is extensive, check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.airplayit.com/streaming-video.htm">supported codecs here.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/addshare.jpg" alt="" width="545" height="262" />

On the Permission tab leaving everything as it is will grant you read-access to your shares without the need to input a PIN. If you would like to change this, configure your PINs accordingly and dish them out. For this guide, I’ve left public user access as open – as all I want to do is watch and listen, locally.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/permissions.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="446" />

Connect Your Device

Now that your server is installed and running, grab your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and download the client from the link below:

  • class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-playit-streaming-video/id449212860?ls=1&mt=8">Air Playit Client @ AppStore (all iOS devices)
style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_appstart.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

Once downloaded, launch the client and take a look at your options. If you want to stream music locally from a PC on your current network, in your current vicinity then tap Local Server. If all went well the server you configured a few minutes ago will show up, and tapping it should reveal your shares (or prompt you for a PIN first).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_detectserver.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

If this does not happen, choose Specify Address Manualy (sic) and input the information found on your server’s Information tab (server name, IP address, port and PIN). Adding a remote server is an identical task, if the server is on the network you are currently using then it too will be automatically detected (which is handy for future, remote use).

A word of warning – if you are going to be streaming via 3G/4G, don’t forget about data costs on both ends; after all your PC has to upload before your mobile can download. You will need a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/static-ip-address-advantages-disadvantages/">static IP or service like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-home-network-dyndns/">DynDNS in order to be reachable, and if you are having issues then there’s a few potential class="vt-p" href="http://forum.airplayit.com/viewthread.php?tid=9&extra=page%253D1">solutions on the Air Playit forum.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_musiclist.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

With your server connected, tap it and peruse the shares you have available. I tested out a few high-quality MP3 files, a music video and a 480p (standard definition) episode of South Park via my home wireless network without any hiccups whatsoever. Unfortunately it is not possible to play music in the background whilst doing other things with your iPhone.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_southpark.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="387" />

Finally if you are interested in downloading files to your device over the air, then the video converter is exactly what you are looking for. On the Conversion tab click Add Video Conversion Task, select your source file and a profile and begin converting. Then you can download the video from a share location by selecting it on your device and hitting Download to iPhone. Nifty.

Conclusion

The Air Playit server and client combination provide an easy way to stream and download your media either locally or remotely. The fact that both ends of the deal are free, easy to use and reliable gives me little reason to find fault with the Air Playit package. This might be the streaming service you’ve been looking for, and it’s free!

Android and Windows Phone 7 users don’t despair, the developers claim there’s a version of Air Playit coming for your device, sometime in the future.

Have you use Air Playit? Have you used it remotely? Any alternative free streamers that do a better job? Let us know in the comments.

  • Setting – A few options to tweak and change should you wish.

The next step is configuring your server. Add shares on the Shares tab by clicking Add Folder, locating and naming your share. Supported audio formats are MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV and video support is extensive, check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.airplayit.com/streaming-video.htm">supported codecs here.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/addshare.jpg" alt="" width="545" height="262" />

On the Permission tab leaving everything as it is will grant you read-access to your shares without the need to input a PIN. If you would like to change this, configure your PINs accordingly and dish them out. For this guide, I’ve left public user access as open – as all I want to do is watch and listen, locally.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/permissions.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="446" />

Connect Your Device

Now that your server is installed and running, grab your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and download the client from the link below:

  • class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-playit-streaming-video/id449212860?ls=1&mt=8">Air Playit Client @ AppStore (all iOS devices)
style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_appstart.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

Once downloaded, launch the client and take a look at your options. If you want to stream music locally from a PC on your current network, in your current vicinity then tap Local Server. If all went well the server you configured a few minutes ago will show up, and tapping it should reveal your shares (or prompt you for a PIN first).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_detectserver.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

You will need a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/static-ip-address-advantages-disadvantages/">static IP or service like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-home-network-dyndns/">DynDNS in order to be reachable, and if you are having issues then there’s a few potential class="vt-p" href="http://forum.airplayit.com/viewthread.php?tid=9&extra=page%253D1">solutions on the Air Playit forum.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_musiclist.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

With your server connected, tap it and peruse the shares you have available. I tested out a few high-quality MP3 files, a music video and a 480p (standard definition) episode of South Park via my home wireless network without any hiccups whatsoever. Unfortunately it is not possible to play music in the background whilst doing other things with your iPhone.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone_southpark.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="387" />

Windows users may be prompted to create an exception for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-windows-firewall-windows-7-firewall-control/">Windows Firewall, so make sure you grant access should you use it.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/windowsfirewall.jpg" alt="" width="551" height="399" />

The first screen you will see is a registration form, which you can fill in or opt to ignore by clicking Do not show again. Once you have dismissed the dialogue, take a good look at the server which should already be running under the name of your computer.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/serverstart.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="446" />

How To Transfer Music & Other Media To Your iPod Or iOS Device [Linux]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro11.jpg" alt="transfer music to ipod" />If you’re using an iPod or iOS device, Linux might seem like a daft choice of operating system. Apple doesn’t officially support it, and whilst that’s a real shame (especially considering the UNIX similarities between OS X and Linux) it’s not, in some cases, insurmountable.

Unless you’re using the 4th generation device (or iPad) you shouldn’t have any issues transferring media, provided you’ve got the right software on your side. Unfortunately iPod Touch 4, iPad and iPhone 4 users running iOS 4.1+ won’t be able to use this method until the vital libgpod library used by class="vt-p" href="http://www.gtkpod.org/">gtkpod is updated to support these devices. Until then, they will mount (using the first method below) as read-only. As soon as libgpod gets an update we’ll pencil in the details here. For the rest of you it’s easy, and you’ll be loading music onto your Apple device in no time.

Getting Penguins To Talk To Fruits

Note: If you’re using a non-iOS device, e.g. iPod or iPod nano, you do not need this – skip to the next section below. If you are using an old iPod Touch (1G, 2G, 3G) or iPhone (1G, 2G, 3G) then you do need this.

In order to get Linux and your iPhone or iPod Touch (old ones, remember) on speaking terms you’re going to need to download libimobiledevice. Once you have installed this package, your Apple device and Linux operating system will play along nicely.

Visit class="vt-p" href="http://www.libimobiledevice.org/">libimobiledevice.org to either download a package suitable for your particular distribution, or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/compile-install-tar-gz-tar-bz2-files-ubuntu-linux/">compile from source if you’re that way inclined. Ubuntu users who would like a quick install can open a Terminal window and paste:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmcenery/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libimobiledevice1

Note the 1 at the end of the command! There are other packages available for OpenSUSE, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fedora-12-a-visually-pleasing-highly-configurable-linux-distro-you-might-want-to-try/">Fedora, Mandriva and Debian, all located at the above URL. Once you’ve set that up, you’re good to go – time to plug in that iPhone!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/mounted.png" alt="transfer music to ipod" width="297" height="167" />

On most distributions the device will mount itself automatically. If it doesn’t you’ve either not installed the above package or will need to mount the device according to your distribution’s guidelines.

You now have filetree access to your device. Prod around if you want, you’ll find your camera images in the DCIM folder if you want to quickly copy and paste them to a local folder for backup.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/iphone_root.png" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="551" height="558" />

Note: don’t delete anything from the DCIM folder (or any location, really) as this does not update your iTunes database. Your iPhone will think the files are still there and you’ll have to manually delete a bunch of fuzzy thumbnails later.

Transferring Music & Video

From experience, there’s only one program I would recommend for this task – class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/banshee-20-comprehensive-media-player-streamer-podcast-tool-linux/">Banshee, a clever little all in one solution. The app supports music, video, podcasts and audiobooks. In fact, you can use anything listed at the bottom of class="vt-p" href="http://www.gtkpod.org/wiki/Libgpod">this gtkpod webpage and this includes a few familiars like Rhythmbox, Amarok and podtool.

Here I’ll be sticking to Banshee as it is the standard music player for Ubuntu 11.04, but if you’re using an older version or different distribution you’ll need to grab the appropriate one at the class="vt-p" href="http://banshee.fm/download/">Banshee download page.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/banshee_pretransfer.jpg" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="580" height="450" />

With your iPhone (or iPod Touch) connected and mounted, start up Banshee. Click on your device in the left hand sidebar and Banshee will display a page which allows you to determine whether you want manual or automatic music sync – manual is always best.

Next you’ll need to add music to the Banshee database. Simply choose Media then Import Media then decide on whether to import your entire library or simply the selection you want on your device. There’s no support for .FLAC, .OGG, .APE or similar so make sure you’ve class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-flac-mp3-music-portable/">transcoded any class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-flac-mp3-music-portable/">of these to something like .MP3, .AAC, .ALAC, .AIFF or .WAV.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/transferring.png" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="335" height="306" />

With your music imported, choose your default Music playlist. Next simply select the artists, albums or single tracks you would like on the device (Ctrl+Click for multiple choices). The next step is simple – drag your chosen artists, albums and so on to your device listed under Devices in the side menu (e.g. iPhone). Banshee will immediately begin transferring files, and your device should notify you that a sync is in progress.

Note: This probably sounds obvious, but please don’t unmount or disconnect your device whilst sync is in process. You will probably corrupt your device’s database file and cause all manner of headaches.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/banshee_posttransfer.jpg" alt="transfer music to ipod" width="580" height="382" />

That’s pretty much it, and it works just the same with video only you’ll need to make sure your device supports the video format you are trying to sync (supported filetypes include: .MP4, .M4V & .MOV).

Conclusion

It’s a shame that gtkpod hasn’t updated for the latest Apple firmware, but it’s hopefully only a matter of time. With a powerful program like Banshee at the helm, controlling your media is a pretty straightforward task. You don’t quite get the same functionality as you’d get from iTunes (firmware updates are the big one there, I think) but it works. At least for some. Banshee also works on Windows and OS X, for those of you who are desperate to leave iTunes behind.

Have you got an iPhone but also run Linux? Are there better tools out there than Banshee? Maybe you’re an iTunes refugee? Have your say in the comments below! />

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/banshee_pretransfer.jpg" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="580" height="450" />

There’s no support for .FLAC, .OGG, .APE or similar so make sure you’ve class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-flac-mp3-music-portable/">transcoded any class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-flac-mp3-music-portable/">of these to something like .MP3, .AAC, .ALAC, .AIFF or .WAV.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/transferring.png" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="335" height="306" />

You will probably corrupt your device’s database file and cause all manner of headaches.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/banshee_posttransfer.jpg" alt="transfer music to ipod" width="580" height="382" />

Once you’ve set that up, you’re good to go – time to plug in that iPhone!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/mounted.png" alt="transfer music to ipod" width="297" height="167" />

    On most distributions the device will mount itself automatically. If it doesn’t you’ve either not installed the above package or will need to mount the device according to your distribution’s guidelines.

    You now have filetree access to your device. Prod around if you want, you’ll find your camera images in the DCIM folder if you want to quickly copy and paste them to a local folder for backup.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/iphone_root.png" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="551" height="558" />

    With your iPhone (or iPod Touch) connected and mounted, start up Banshee. Click on your device in the left hand sidebar and Banshee will display a page which allows you to determine whether you want manual or automatic music sync – manual is always best.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/transferring.png" alt="transfer music to ipod without itunes" width="335" height="306" />

    12 Most Common iPod Sync Problems & How to Fix Them

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/shutterstock_52271518-300.png" alt="ipod sync problems" width="260" height="190" />Are you having iPod sync problems?  Does iTunes keep giving you a weird error number that you don’t understand?  Have you searched through many an iPod/iTunes forum looking for answers and yet still don’t know what’s wrong? Yeah, I’ve been there before. I know it well.

    The most frustrating thing is to wade through idea after idea, gradually considering the XYZ things you might need to do just to get your iPod to sync. You think there has to be an easier way. Surely someone at iTunes had this version of iPod and used XP too? Surely they didn’t have to resort to registry hacking to fix this? Well, we can hope. In the meantime, here’s a compiled list of the most common iPod sync problems and the easiest steps you can take to work out how to fix them. Hopefully it will have you sorted out in no time.

    id="more-64461">

    1. Back Up Before You Try Anything

    It’s advised that you do an iTunes backup and an class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 ">iPod/iPhone backup before you try any fixes.

    2. Are You New To iPods?

    If you’ve never had an iPod before, quickly check this class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1351">basic user guide to make sure you know how it’s supposed to be syncing.

    3. Restore & Update

    iTunes encourage users to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1481">restore and update their iPods if there are any sync problems. Often your problem can be resolved easily this way, so give it a go. Connect your iPod, open iTunes, then choose “Check for update” to ensure you have the latest version of the software.

    To back up your iPod, Right-Click (or CTRL-Click) your device in iTunes when connected and choose “Back Up“.

    4. Beware Of Applications Which Change Computer Appearance

    Skins and other class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">appearance-changing software can have undesired consequences with iTunes, so try uninstalling them. You might find a quick fix to your problems!

    5. Enable Disc Use

    This might help if you’ve seen any of the following errors:

    • Unknown iPod Error (-50).
    • An unknown error occurred (-50)
    • The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.

    These errors occur a lot under Windows XP and are often fixed by class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=653201&tstart=30 ">enabling disk use on your iPod.

    You need to click “enable disc use” then “apply” really quickly. Then you need to do something to make XP recognise the drive ASAP. The easiest way is to have Device Manager open and ready, then click class="vt-p" href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6854405&tstart=0">“Scan For Hardware Changes” or “Add New Hardware“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/iPod_Scan_For_Hardware_Changes.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

    6. Deselect Music Sync / Deselect Voice Memo Sync

    You may be able to pinpoint the problem by class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 ">deselecting various sync checkboxes (eg. Voice Memo or Music Sync) before attempting a sync.

    7. Try Syncing With A New Admin Account

    Create a new admin account on your machine, open iTunes (which will be a new library), then attempt to class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 "> sync your iPod with this new library. If it works, you can at least eliminate hardware conflicts and iPod failure. It is likely to be a problem with the library, a corrupt file you’re trying to transfer or a program automatically running in your normal profile.

    8. Run Disc Utility / Repair Disc / Error Checking

    It might be the case that your iPod needs to have the class="vt-p" href="http://www.chromewalker.com/cw_six/?p=148 ">disc repaired. Make sure the iPod is set to “enable disc use” but not to start iTunes when plugged in, then shut iTunes and eject the iPod. When you re-connect, run Disc Utility / Repair Disc on the iPod. Then try syncing in iTunes – you might have to run Repair Disc again.

    Also try going to the iPod in My Computer. Right click and choose Properties > Tools > Error Checking.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Ipod_Error_Checking.png" alt="ipod sync problems" />

    9. Fix Digital Signing Of Windows Drivers

    This might be required if you’ve seen one of the following errors:

    • The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-124 , 1418, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439).

    It’s possible that your registry files have been corrupted in some way. So, class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539 ">iTunes have written out the content of a batch file for you to create and run. Don’t forget to back up first! They also suggest doing a virus check afterwards just in case that was what caused your problem in the first place.

    10. Verify MobileMe Settings

    To class="vt-p" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1672 ">verify your MobileMe settings are correct, ensure your Internet connection is working then connect for a sync. If it’s not syncing (or has finished) check that the MobileMe contacts and calendar data is correct. Also check your MobileMe email as that will let you know if your password is correctly entered. Then click on “fetch new data” and ensure push is turned “ON”.

    11. Corrupt Files and Hardware Conflicts

    Have you seen “sync error -69″?

    Every now and then, you might find a corrupt MP3 file or photo in your collection. If that happens, iTunes will throw an error message at you, but not necessarily explain why. Check to see if you can pinpoint a particular song it’s trying to transfer. Or, try class="vt-p" href="http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/12262-error-69-cant-sync-ipod.html ">deleting your photo cache. Note, this could also be caused by a hardware conflict.

    12. It Might Just Be iTunes

    Don’t forget that it might just be a problem with iTunes itself. Try going through these class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-top-itunes-troubleshooting-tips-tricks/">iTunes fixes to see if you can get your iTunes working properly.

    The Mark Of Mp3 Culture-Apple Ipod

    Nowadays, the mp3 player has been developed to a great extent. We can even see the player with fashionable design come to our life including the sunglasses mp3 player and watch mp3 player. Do you know something about the history or culture about the mp3 player? Are you a fan of iPod? In the following we are going to talk something about the Apple iPod.

    Coming with high price and super power-consuming, NOMAD Juke box doesn’t bring people to the life with hard-drive based mp3 player. But something has changed with the coming of Apple iPod. Though Apple is not the first one coming up with the idea of hard-drive based mp3, it’s iPod that really open the wave of hard-drive based mp3 player.

    iPod came as an mp3 without much excellence indeed in October, 2001. In fact, it’s of high price, common audio quality, short life and it didn’t support Windows. However, it’s first electronic combined the internet music with mp3 player. People were willing to download music from Apple official website with little money. iPod gained support from both consumers and record companies then.

    More importantly, besides the nice appearance and humanistic design, iPod has become a kind of fashion and even an indication the mp3 musical culture. If you have an iPod, you may not get the best mp3, but you turn to be a person of taste.

    As something has turned to be a kind of culture, it can never be replaced anymore. That’s the reason why the iPod keeps being the best seller from the first to forth generation.

    Free Music mp3 players -Ipod Player mp3 on eBay and Amazon website

    Free Music mp3 players -Ipod Player mp3 -eBay and Amazon website

    With the recent advent of the Ipod, a lot of people are using portable Mp3 players to carry their entire music collection around with them. What just a few years ago would have required you to lug a suitcase full of CDs around, now can fit in the palm of your hand. Visit here now http://ipod-allmp3players.blogspot.com/

    Some Ipods can carry up to 60Gb of songs (and now video) on a single miniature hard drive. The Ipod even looks cool and lights up like a magical glowing device. Besides Apple, numerous companies make portable Mp3 players.This doesn’t even begin to get into the phenomenon of podcasting. Podcasting is a simple concept with amazing utility for the average consumer. Imagine if you could take an audio broadcast of any sort (podcasting a teleseminar comes to mind) on the airplane with you on your next business trip.

    1)You don’t have to be there when the teleseminar is held.

    2)You can pause it, rewind it, fast forward the teleseminar to any point that you feel is important.

    3)You can listen to it repeatedly.

    4)You can send the podcast to friends and family members who can also take the audio content with them on their merry way.

    I do this all the time. It works great. Download and go. This is bigger than you think. Overall, the ubiquity of portable Mp3 players is a cultural revolution as far as information transfer goes. Why do I have to wait for a broadcast when I can be in another time zone and replay it at my leisure.

    When you take your Mp3 player on the road with you, you are basically shifting time. No more sitting around waiting for the video or audio presentation to start. You can download it to your portable Mp3 player and start it whenever you want.

    Portable Mp3 players seem to be here to stay. Find out why and what the latest trends are: you’ll be surprised how you ever lived without one. I was! Free Music mp3 players -Ipod Player mp3 -eBay and Amazon website .

    Comparing iPod and MP3 Players – Is There A Difference?

    According to the latest market studies, the iPod has sold over 1.5 million units as compared to the other MP3 players. The iPod video 30gb holds over 15,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or 150 hours of video with a battery life of 14 hours for music, and two hours for videos. This is exciting when we think about having no choices a few years ago, or carrying around a lot of CDs. Of course, we could always listen to the car stereo! But when a person is out shopping for a MP3 player, is the iPod really any better?

    First of all, we need to understand that the iPod is an MP3 player, not that iPods and MP3 players are identical and in competition. A good rule of thumb to remember is this: when you look for a DVR, you don’t say you are looking for a DVR. For example, you say you are looking for a Tivo. An analogy would be this – when you go to buy a carbonated beverage or soda, you don’t say you are looking for a carbonated beverage, you say you are looking for a Coke or a Pepsi. Both are carbonated beverages. When you look for an MP3 player, you don’t say you are looking for a MP3 player – because it could be any brand, including the iPod. You say you are looking for an iPod. This, and other subtle differences, is the difference between an iPod and an MP3 player. And when recognizing this, understand that of all the negative reviews of any of the MP3 players, all the complaints of errors were 95% user errors – not reading what the item was actually capable of doing.

    The iPod is the most popular MP3 player out there. This is not even open for discussion. Owned by celebrities in the Rolling Stone Magazine or on Entertainment Tonight, you never see them talking about the benefits and features of their Creative Labs or iRiver, other brands of the MP3 players. Why? Because it is not considered “hip” or “cool” to talk about anything other than an iPod. It HAS to be an iPod for a person to fit in, to be with it, and to be accepted as one of the leaders in MP3 players.

    But then, don’t most of us grow up? We begin to see all options that fit our needs, not just what is hip. We begin to see ourself as an individual, not just as one of a group – with no separate identity. We pass through Junior High and High school, and head into college, begin a family, or just get on with life. And with this, we begin to see the benefits of more affordable MP3 players, not just one. We begin to look at what we want in a MP3 player beside a brand name.

    The most important focus for most buyers who are paying their own bills is money. The iPods are very expensive, with a nonreplacable battery that loses its resiliency in about a couple years. And if money is issues with the ol’ pocket … consider how much extra space you can get for your dollar by going with a different brand name than iPod. If the price tag on the iPod 60GB player is $399 and the price tag on the Toshiba 60GB player is $249, then a person has something to consider. Another option could be the MP3 CD players, which offer more megabytes per dollar with CDs that hold 10 hours of music each. Some people get hung up on the fact it is not a hard drive-based player, while others feel it is comparable enough to go for the extra saved money. It’s all about choice.

    Additionally, the iPod video and audio formats can sometimes cause problems with people who like to use certain types of media formats. Apple uses a few exclusive types of video and audio formats, like the AAC-encoded files, because they are Apple where other manufacturers use multiple formats to become more attractive to the consumer. Many reviews consider this an extremely negative drawback to the iPod, as they feel “hemmed in”. Other MP3 players allow the choice of “BuyMusic”, “Musicmatch”, or “Napster”. Most MP3 players support a wide range musical service choices. Make sure you investigate what formats are supported by iPod and other manufacturers you are considering, it could make or break your purchase.

    Apple’s iPod is the industry leader for a reason, because they make tremendous products, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other great products on the market. With many drawback such as a high price, review complaints of limited support, limited memory, limited types of music that can be recorded or played, or with unlimited ability to record online music. Other brands to look would be Rio, Creative, Samsung or Dell – it may be time to do a comparison study!
