class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/androidmalwarethumb2.jpg" alt="" />Malware threats against phones were once few and far between, but anyone being honest with themselves knew that it was just a matter of time before hackers went after them in force. Now, Android is receiving way too much attention from the wrong people.
According to a report from Juniper Networks, there has been a marked rise in Android malware in the months of October and November. Worse, 44% of the threats discovered by Juniper in their research were of the SMS Trojan variety. These viruses send SMS messages to premium numbers without the user knowing, racking up lots of cash for the people operating those numbers – and lots of charges on customer accounts.
Juniper blames Google’s
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quick-guide-developing-android-apps-google-app-inventor/">open development process for the issue. Android’s market uses a system where developer apps are not reviewed before they appear. Google will pull malware, of course, but only after it’s been reported and had the chance to infect Android devices.
Thankfully, you can defend yourself by downloading an anti-virus app – but you may need to get out your wallet. There’s still limited data on most free anti-virus apps, and the information that is available from

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/lookout-mobile-security-protect-phone-malware-locate-remotely/">Lookout is still untested).
On the other hand, these organizations have tested paid apps from Kaspersky and F-Secure and given praise to both.

class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/images/recurring/sound-sunday.png?54167"/>Yet another week has passed and it’s time again for Sound Sunday. In this edition you’ll find quite a bit of variation, including a remix album of The Chemical Brothers’ record Further, a tribute album to Nirvana’s Nevermind, and a mix of genres including pop, rock, soul, hip hop, ambient, electronic, and an idea of punk.
If you wish to have an impact on next week’s edition, I encourage you to post your feedback in the comments or send me an Email [tina at makeuseof dot com]. Album suggestions or genre requests are very welcome!

title="Saints of Valory Homepage" href="http://www.saintsofvalory.com/">Saints of Valory – Mixtape
Austin, TX is a hotbed for musical creation and discovery. Plenty of international artists relocate to Austin, but Saints of Valory have an interesting melting pot of a lineup. Lead singer Gavin Jasper is Brazilian, Frenchman Gerard Bouvier pounds the drums and keyboardist Stephen Buckle is Canadian. Godfrey Thomson, on guitar, is the only dude from the US of A. For a band whose members hail from all over the globe, the style here is straightforward. Sugary guitar and key harmonies populate the group’s five-song Neon Eyes EP. The production is solid, the hooks are there and Jasper’s voice is somewhat reminiscent of Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

From the album introduction: “Morpion brings an intriguing and unique edge to the IDM side of things, combining various electronic styles into something universal. “Headcleaner” appeals to both the glitch and ambient lovers, and its arsenal of downtempo and dub influenced layers inflate the album into a well-rounded embodiment of music.”

From the official album introduction: “DJ Jazzy Jeff, along with contributions from well-known producers James Poyser, Pete Kuzma and Démien DeSandies, has created an experience that music lovers have long awaited. Yet, those not as well versed in the genre will appreciate these soulful treats just the same. From the album introduction on Bandcamp: “Somehow between being a music expert and comedian for VH1, DJaying, preparing for her next art exhibit, hosting “Speaking Of…” on Music Choice, developing a TV show based on her comedy produced by Nick Cannon, and speaking at colleges across the nation, Deev found time to get in the studio work and with Ski Beatz, James Poyser, Droop E, Cook Classics and more to make some bottom line, dopeness. Though she was busy with other projects, it was her frustration with America’s obsession with image over artistry and money over musicality that made her decide to put music to the side. But a recent trip to Europe to perform in Berlin and Paris showed her that there is still a world that appreciates true artistry! Renewed, she came back to the states, got back on the mic, and found her way to “Madame Monochrome”.”

From their Last.fm profile: “After couple of solo performances as a singer songwriter, Dukat Stray a.k.a. Stray Dogg decided to form a band in the winter of 2011 with Ana (violin), and Jelena (piano), girls who are Music Academy (Belgrade) graduates. The band performed as a backup to Chinawoman and Scout Niblett after only couple of months practice, with a 4 song Demo only availible. The band needed another guitar player, and that’s when Marko from the Belgrade electropop band Inje, joined Stray Dogg band to play solo guitar.”

CAE’s releases are the result of hours of improvisation recorded with basic analog equipment across the globe. It can be described as library music, in reference to the abstract, obscure instrumentals of the 60′s-70′s. class="align-right" src="http://www.makeuseof.com/images/recurring/sound-sunday.png?54167"/>Let Sound Sunday into your ears!
This Sunday I want to explore the often neglected sides of a very artistic and diverse musical genre with you. When people hear Hip Hop, they typically think of Rap, “the beat-driven rhymes of an often improvisatory nature.” For many (including myself) Rap is a turn off. But Hip Hop has evolved and expanded into sub-genres and flavors that do perfectly well without Rap. This is the other side of Hip Hop, the instrumental, beats, soul, ambient, electronic, dubstep, trip hop, and drum’n’bass side, which I want to give you a taste of today.
