Now, Android is receiving way too much attention from the wrong people.

According to a report from Juniper Networks, there has been a marked rise in Android malware in the months of October and November. Worse, 44% of the threats discovered by Juniper in their research were of the SMS Trojan variety. These viruses send SMS messages to premium numbers without the user knowing, racking up lots of cash for the people operating those numbers – and lots of charges on customer accounts.

Juniper blames Google’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quick-guide-developing-android-apps-google-app-inventor/">open development process for the issue. Android’s market uses a system where developer apps are not reviewed before they appear. Google will pull malware, of course, but only after it’s been reported and had the chance to infect Android devices.

Thankfully, you can defend yourself by downloading an anti-virus app – but you may need to get out your wallet. There’s still limited data on most free anti-virus apps, and the information that is available from href="http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews/mobile-security">AV-Comparatives and href="http://www.av-test.org/fileadmin/pdf/avtest_2011-11_free_android_virus_scanner_english.pdf">AV-Test has shown some to be worthless (crowd favorite href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/lookout-mobile-security-protect-phone-malware-locate-remotely/">Lookout is still untested).

On the other hand, these organizations have tested paid apps from Kaspersky and F-Secure and given praise to both. href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kms&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rbXMiXQ..">Kaspersky Mobile Security is $9.99 on the Android market, and a version for href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/android-tablet-security/">Android tablets is available. F-Secure is 29.95 in British Pounds. F-Secure is not available for download on the North American Android market.

Austin, TX is a hotbed for musical creation and discovery. Plenty of international artists relocate to Austin, but Saints of Valory have an interesting melting pot of a lineup. Lead singer Gavin Jasper is Brazilian, Frenchman Gerard Bouvier pounds the drums and keyboardist Stephen Buckle is Canadian. Godfrey Thomson, on guitar, is the only dude from the US of A. For a band whose members hail from all over the globe, the style here is straightforward. Sugary guitar and key harmonies populate the group’s five-song Neon Eyes EP. The production is solid, the hooks are there and Jasper’s voice is somewhat reminiscent of Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Chrome Sparks is the project of 20-something university student Jeremy Malvin of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He describes himself as a claustrophobic procrastinator with a bad taste in cereals. If anything, these characteristics appear to benefit the music.

When people hear Hip Hop, they typically think of Rap, “the beat-driven rhymes of an often improvisatory nature.” For many (including myself) Rap is a turn off. But Hip Hop has evolved and expanded into sub-genres and flavors that do perfectly well without Rap. This is the other side of Hip Hop, the instrumental, beats,  soul, ambient, electronic, dubstep, trip hop, and drum’n’bass side, which I want to give you a taste of today.
