How Many Programming Languages Do You know? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/polls.png"/>Last week we asked MakeUseOf readers exactly href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-addresses-makeuseof-poll/">how many email addresses you have. It turns out most of us around here have between 2 and 5 email addresses, and the rest of us have even more.

Out of the 954 votes, we had this breakdown: 51% have 2-5 email addresses; 29% have 6-10 email addresses; 10% have between 10-20 email addresses; 8% have 20+ email addresses; 1% have only one email address; while one voter (or .01%) had no email address at all.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

The bulk of MakeUseOf readers have 2-5 email addresses), while the rest generally have more.

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: How Many Programming Languages Do You know?

MakeUseOf readers generally seem to have a little geek talent in reserve, so we thought we’d find out just how geeky you all are. In order to decide whether you “know” a programming language or not, think about whether you could honestly tell a potential employer you knew it. Basically, it doesn’t matter if you’d use a cheat sheet for reminders, but you should understand how the language works, have coded with it before and remember it well enough to not need to re-learn it. As for what counts as a programming language, that’s another argument. Be sensible!

    The Things You Need To Know When Buying A New Hard Drive

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/harddrives1.jpg" alt="buy hard drive" width="252" height="252" />Your computer’s hard drive is its only form of long-term storage. Music, photos, documents, games – it all goes on your hard drive. There isn’t a lot you can do to increase the capacity of your hard drive, either.

    You can always try to compress files, but that’s not much fun, and this often just delays the inevitable. If you’re running out of hard drive space it’s only a matter of time before you need to buy a new drive. But what should you buy?

    id="more-57693">

    Inside or Out?

    First things first – before anything else, you need to decide what type of hard drive you’re looking for. External or internal?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/harddrive2.jpg" alt="buy hard drive" width="400" height="230" />

    These drives are very different. External drives loiter outside your system and connect to your computer via class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/usb/">USB, eSATA or FireWire connection. These hard drives are portable and incredibly simple to use – most are plug and play.

    However, external drives are generally more expensive per gigabyte of storage than internal drives. They also take up space on your desk, which may not be ideal. Finally, external drives usually don’t perform as well as internal drives, so you may notice that copying files to and from the external drive takes a long time.

    External drives connected via class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/usb-30-technology-explained/">USB 3.0 are an exception to this – but remember, connecting an external hard drive via USB 3.0 requires that both your computer’s motherboard and your external drive support the standard. If your motherboard doesn’t support USB 3.0 you’ll need to buy an expansion card and install it inside your computer.

    Internal drives are better value overall, but an external drive is fine if you’re not comfortable mucking about inside your PC.

    External Concerns

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/harddrive4.jpg" alt="choose replacement hard drive" width="342" height="320" />

    Let’s assume you decided on an external drive. If you went internal, skip to the next section.

    There are two general types of external drives. On the one hand you have small drives based off 2.5” mechanical hard drives. These usually connect via USB and are powered via USB. They’re often small enough to carry in a pocket. Seagate offers a 1.5 TB drive in this category – all other options max out at 1 TB.

    On the other hand you have large external drives based off 3.5” mechanical hard drives. These drives sometimes require power from a wall socket. They’re heavier and not fun to lug around without a bag, but they’re available in capacities of up to (and beyond) 3TB. They’re usually better value, too. The choice here is simply one of portability vs. storage capacity and value.

    You should also pay attention to how a drive connects to your computer. The quickest connections are USB 3.0 and eSATA, but these are also the least common on desktops and laptops, so check to make sure you have the proper connection before buying. USB 2.0 and FireWire connections are more common, but not as quick.

    The spindle speed of an external hard drive should also be considered – higher is better. The fastest external drives available max out at 7200 RPM.

    Internal Affairs

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/harddrive3.jpg" alt="choose replacement hard drive" width="400" height="400" />

    If you’re comfortable installing a hard drive you’re probably best off going internal. Doing so opens up a world of options.

    You don’t have to worry about the portability of internal drives, so picking an internal drive is a straight compromise between performance, storage capacity and price. You do have to worry about size, however, because laptops and desktops use different drive sizes. Laptops use 2.5” drives, while desktops generally use 3.5” drives. Be careful, though – some of today’s slim systems and all-in-one PCs do use 2.5” drives.

    Performance is determined by the spindle speed and cache available on a hard drive. The maximum spindle speed on consumer drives is 10,000 RPM (enterprise hard drives are quicker still, but forget about them – they’re outrageously expensive). Cache is usually between 16 and 64 MB.

    Storage capacity is incredibly various. The smallest internal drives offer about 80 GB of space, while the largest external drives tops out at 3TB.

    Prices rise with performance and capacity. For example, Western Digital sells its low-end “green” 1TB 3.5” internal drive for $60. Upgrading to the high-performance “black” version requires that you hand over an extra $30.

    Connection type isn’t really an issue with internal drives. Almost all internal drives use SATA. You only need to worry if you have a computer older than 5 years, as it may use a legacy connection instead of SATA. You can add SATA support by installing an SATA expansion card.

    A Note About Solid State Drives

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/harddrive51.jpg" alt="buy hard drive" width="440" height="330" />

    Everything I’ve said so far applies to mechanical hard drives. These are still the most popular by far, but the performance a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/why-trim-important-to-solid-state-hard-drives/">solid state drive can offer is hard to ignore.

    If you are considering a SSD, keep in mind that they’re virtually always 2.5” drives. They can be installed in a desktop, but you may need an adapter to secure the drive. Also, be sure to read the reviews. Spindle speed and cache size give a good impression of a mechanical drive’s performance, but there is no easy way to guess the performance of an SSD without reading a review.

    External SSDs are basically just thumb drives. They’re very expensive, but extremely portable. As with internal 2.5” drives there is no easy way to guess performance without researching first.

    Conclusion

    Almost everyone runs out of hard drive storage eventually, but this is nothing to worry about. It’s easy to buy a new hard drive, and most drives with less than 1TB of storage can be had for under $100.

    Just be sure to do your homework – otherwise you may end up with a drive that is slower than you hoped, or a drive that doesn’t work with and/or fit in your computer.

    7 Important Things To Know When Buying An LCD Monitor

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD01.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" width="300" height="195" />Are you tired of your old computer monitor and in dire need of a new one? Maybe you should make yourself familiar with LCD computer monitors. LCD stands for style="text-decoration: underline;">liquid style="text-decoration: underline;">crystal style="text-decoration: underline;">display and are also known as flatscreens.

    LCDs have been used for a while, for example in digital clocks and laptops. In recent years they have become a standard for desktop monitors. During the same time, LCDs have also conquered the TV market.

    Flatscreen monitors are much thinner and lighter than CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors. They also require less energy, emit no electromagnetic radiation, and the technology enables clearer images, higher resolutions, and a flicker-free display, which is easier on the eyes.

    id="more-53413"> /> These are only a few key arguments to finally replace the old CRT monitor. This article explains the various features of monitors in general and flatscreens in specific. It will help you understand what you should watch out for when buying a new LCD computer monitor.

    Screen Size

    The screen size is measured in inches, diagonally from the bottom left to the upper right corner of the display. Available sizes range from 15″ to 30″. The most common size for a desktop monitor today is 19″ to 22″, but it is not uncommon to buy larger sizes.

    Bigger sizes usually means you will have more room on your desktop. You might finally be able to view multiple open windows in parallel. However, bigger monitors also take up more space on your desk and they tend to be more expensive.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD04.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" width="580" height="245" />

    Aspect Ratio

    Aspect ratio describes the relative number of horizontal to vertical pixels in a display. Standard CRT monitors were almost square with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Today, you will find widescreen monitors that have aspect ratios like movie theater screens, i.e. 16:9 or 16:10. 16:9 is also called HD (high definition).

    If you’re watching DVDs on your computer, you can avoid the black bars across your screen with a widescreen display. Wide ratios are also the most convenient solution for viewing multiple windows in parallel. The only reasons to go with 4:3 is that you either prefer it for some reason or you don’t have sufficient space on your desk for a wider monitor.

    Resolution

    Resolution is the number of pixels displayed horizontally and vertically. Due to the nature of LCD technology, flatscreens have only one optimized or native resolution. Hence, their native resolution describes the absolute number of pixels present horizontally and vertically.

    Unlike CRT monitors, using a lower than native resolution on a flatscreen, leads to fuzzy images. Hence it is important to choose the right native resolution from the start as you can not change it, unless you accept a loss of image quality.

    Higher resolutions mean sharper images, higher clarity, and more desktop space. This is perfect if you multitask or enjoy to watch movies on your computer. On the other hand, text become much smaller and harder to read. Thus a high resolution is to be avoided if your eyesight is less than perfect.

    Crunch Gear has produced a great comparison chart of aspect ratios and available resolutions. Click the respective links for the class="vt-p" title="Cruch Gear Article" href="http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/12/09/handy-chart-for-understanding-aspect-ratio-and-resolution/">article or the class="vt-p" title="Aspect Ratio and Resolution Chart" href="http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/799px-aspect_ratios_and_resolutionssvg.png">full size image.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD02.png" border="0" alt="lcd monitor" width="580" height="437" />

    Contrast Ratio

    Contrast ratio describes the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black the LCD computer monitor can display. Higher contrast ratios equal whiter whites and blacker blacks, as well as a greater degree of gray values in between. The best contrast ratio you can get is 1,000 : 1.

    Contrast ratio is a difficult topic. You cannot really compare the values between different manufacturers. Also, sometimes you will find the term dynamic contrast, which is not the same as contrast ratio and can be deceiving.

    Brightness

    LCD monitors are illuminated by several backlights. Brightness is measured in candelas per square meter (cd/m2). A higher rating of at least 300 cd/m2, i.e. higher brightness, is to be desired if you want to watch movies or play games on your computer. For office work and browsing a lower rating of 200 – 250 cd/m2 is fine.

    Viewing Angle

    The higher the viewing angle, the better people who look at the monitor from the side will be able to see its display. Compared to CRTs, LCDs have a limited viewing angle. However, this feature is only interesting if you expect yourself or guests to look at your monitor with an angle. You can ignore it if you’re always going to sit straight in front of your monitor.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD05.png" border="0" alt="lcd monitor" width="580" height="181" />

    Ports

    All this time I’ve only been talking about the display and the LCD technology. But a monitor is more than just a display. It needs to be connected to a computer and possibly other devices. Hence, you need to know what type of port you will need and then make sure the monitor has it. Most importantly, check which connector your video card supports.

    Here is a brief overview of the most common ones:

    • DisplayPort /> The latest digital display interface, produced since 2008.
    • HDMI /> style="text-decoration: underline;">High- style="text-decoration: underline;">Definition style="text-decoration: underline;">Multimedia style="text-decoration: underline;">Interface, a digital audio/video interface produced since 2003.
    • DVI /> style="text-decoration: underline;">Digital style="text-decoration: underline;">Video style="text-decoration: underline;">Interface, the first digital video interface. Produced to replace VGA since 1999.
    • VGA /> style="text-decoration: underline;">Video style="text-decoration: underline;">Graphics style="text-decoration: underline;">Array, the old analog connector, first produced in 1987.

    The image below shows the ports mentioned above. From left to right: DisplayPort (blue), HDMI (black), VGA (white), and DVI (white).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD03.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" />

    In addition to these you may find component video, S-video, and composite video connectors.

    I didn’t go into class="vt-p" title="LCD Monitor Response Time" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Response_time_%28technology%29">response time, which can be neglected, and class="vt-p" title="LCD Panel Technology" href="http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php">panel technology, which basically doesn’t matter if you make up your mind about the above features.

    To summarize, you should first pick a desired size, aspect ratio, and resolution. These characteristics should meet your needs. In the next step you can compare all available models for further features, most importantly contrast ratio, brightness, and available ports. Finally, the price will decide which model you can afford.

    What is the most important factor for you when buying an LCD computer monitor?

When you factor in that the funding href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/196017994/diaspora-the-personally-controlled-do-it-all-distr">eventually reached $200,641 and donors to the project include Facebook frontman Mark Zuckerburg (describing it as a “cool idea”) then this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-5-best-open-source-social-networking-software/">open-source social network venture starts to sound quite exciting.

    The word diaspora originated from the Greek meaning “a scattering of seeds”, an apt name for any decentralised social network. In modern usage, a diaspora is defined as a group migration, but will the promise of tighter security and an open source attitude be enough to tempt people away from social media giants like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/is-facebook-safer-than-myspace/">Facebook or MySpace?

    id="more-54237">

    What’s It For?

    Diaspora came about when a group of New York University students from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science were inspired by a speech about freedom and privacy online. Columbia University law professor Eben Moglen described centralised social networks as “spying for free” and the developers came up with Diaspora.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/diaspofficial.jpg" alt="open source facebook"/>

    On April 24 2010, the project was announced on href="http://www.kickstarter.com">Kickstarter. Within a few weeks the team had a few hundred thou’ in the bank, a goal to aim for and the open-source world on their side.

    The developers aim to create an alternative social network, with the added option of choosing where your data is stored rather than have it sit on the same centralised server. They’re also pretty big on keeping work and play separate, so your boss remains oblivious to what you get up to on a Friday night.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/workmates.jpg" alt="open source facebook"/>

    The project’s main “opposition” (for want of a better word) is undoubtedly Facebook, which has been making headlines for a while over security lapses and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-complete-guide-to-facebook-privacy/">privacy boo-boos. Even if the project isn’t a massive success, Diaspora’s direct approach with privacy and data security will hopefully further encourage Facebook and pals to improve things on their side.

    So How Does It Work?

    Users are able to set up their own servers (known as “seeds”) to store their data, these seeds can then interact with other seeds to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/review-of-5-online-photo-sharing-sites-as-free-alternatives-to-flickr/">share photos, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/openbook-search-facebook-status-updates/">status updates and everything else the internet likes to do.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/status.jpg" alt="open source facebook alternative"/>

    Not everybody needs to set up a seed, but through having these separate “hubs” you are able to choose where your data is hosted – rather than putting it straight on someone else’s servers. Your data remains on the seed you choose, and you have control over what is done with it.

    Data migration has also been addressed and developers have said that if a user would like to move data to another seed, Diaspora will support seamless migration from one seed to another and still work afterwards.

    Diaspora is still somewhat of a business, much like Facebook. When the platform is finally launched there are plans from the developers to offer paid hosting for seeds, complete with support. Those of you interested in this thinking “No thanks, I’ve got hosting” probably don’t care, as long as you’ve got support for Ruby in your hosting package.

    Apart from that, it all reads a bit Facebook really. The main Diaspora interface looks like Facebook though the current version isn’t exactly full of features and consumer-friendly.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/aspects.jpg" alt="open source facebook alternative"/>

    The ability to separate your work life and social life is a nice touch, and highly customizable. Diaspora refers to groups of people as “aspects”, and contacts are added to these as required. When you post an update online you can then choose to only post to work, family or even just your drinking buddies.

    What State Is It In?

    The current build is a developer preview, with a consumer alpha due in October. There’s undoubtedly still a long way to go, but the open-source nature of the project should help move things along.

    At the moment you can post status updates, upload photos, add contacts and edit your profile. The current build is also chock-full of security holes, but that’s no surprise as it’s still pre-alpha.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/addfriend.jpg" alt="open source facebook alternative"/>

    Developers have promised a “battery of add-on modules” are making their way to Diaspora, and these are intended to enable “any type of communication”. They are also planning their own href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-security-tips-to-protect-yourself-from-instant-messenger-hacks/">instant messenger (because you haven’t got enough of those already) and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-how-does-skype-work/">VoIP integration.

    Also on the to-do list is integration with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/openid-overview-and-four-awesome-providers/">OpenID, to facilitate logging in and the distribution of encrypted backups between seeds. It all sounds great, it’s just not built yet.

    Can I Have A Go?

    If you do want a play with the current development build then you can register on href="http://openspora.com">Openspora and take a look around. Remember – don’t go adding too many personal details and your wedding photos. This is still a preview!

    Those of you who want something a little more stable and actually usable will have wait for that consumer alpha coming in October.

    Diaspora is still in its infancy yet already receiving a lot of interest. If you’re concerned about privacy, data protection and what Facebook are planning next then it is probably worth keeping an eye on this one. Whether it’s going to be a real contender for the social networking crown remains to be seen. />

    Things You Need To Know Before Purchasing A Restaurant POS Hardware

    Any basic POS systems you may see on a typical retail establishment consists of a cash register with or without a built in cash drawer, monitor, receipt printers, and an input device. It can also be a touch screen monitors, programmable keyboards, or scanners and handheld devices for inputting data into the POS system.

    Touch Screens:
    Many restaurants find touch screen monitors as more intuitive to use than keyboards, as it can reduce mistypes and can easily cancel inputted orders within a second, and because it provides flexible user interfaces and programming. Aside from that, touch screens are easier to position in any counter and even uses less electricity, although, they can be more prone to breakdowns.

    Handheld devices: Restaurant harware devices like PDAs, which are commonly wireless devices that transmits data back to its base station and into the POS system. You can also use the newer version, which is the write-on handhelds that allows you to write information such as the orders and sends them directly to the kitchen! These types of handheld devices are perfect for your staff who interacts with your customers, when up-selling desserts and drinks roaming around table per table.

    Keyboards: You’ll find that most grocery and convenient stores prefer to use this type of POS hardware because it allows them to program individual keys for specific item codes and prices. A standard keyboard consists of 101-key, which can be seen with any computer. Others are small and flat, which are common in fast food outlets. POS keyboards often has a built-in magnetic stripe readers for processing credit cards.

    Scanners: This restaurant hardware reads bar codes and converts it before inputting it’s details to a POS system computer. This device speeds up transactions and provide accurate data on products or services being purchased by a customer. Scanners connects through Y-connectors called wedges that make them function as an extension of the keyboard.

    Volume of customers: For different volume of customers, using different types of scanners can be very helpful. If the line has several customers, your staff can easily use a CCD scanner or entry-level laser scanner. If the line is loaded with customers, then an  autosensing laser scanners would be better. This type of scanner  turns on when an item is placed in front of it, scans its code, and then turn off again. But if the counter line is overflowing with customers, you could sure use the help of an omnidirectional scanner, where it can scan a bar code from any angle with its 15 or 20 lasers simultaneously!

    Additional Restaurant POS

    Cash drawers: Used to store cash, credit card slips, gift certificates and other important papers. When looking to buy a cash drawer, look for a sturdy construction of at least 18-gauge steel, don’t just buy one because your local vendor tells you that it’s the latest or simply because it looks fancy. Go for the most reliable cash drawer since the usable life of cash drawers are measured, you also have to make surer that you can replace rollers, bearings, and other parts. A typical cash drawer opens only when it is signaled by the POS printer.

    POS printers: An addition to your restaurant POS system is a printer, every retail business needs one to complete a sales transaction. A POS printer is needed for printing a receipt and creating credit card slips. There are two types of POS printers, the dot matrix printer and the thermal printer. The dot matrix printer uses ribbons and regular paper to print. On the other hand, Thermal printers are slighly expensive than the dot matrix printers because they are more realiable, they have less moving parts, faster and quieter when printing.

    Customer displays:
    A customer display or pole display lets your customers view the price of the item they’re about to purchase, and can sometimes be used to support advertising. Just make sure that your customer display has the right height and width to perfectly fit in to your counter table, as well as it’s compatibility with your POS software.

    Check readers: If you’re still thinking if you’re going to buy one, now would be the best time to say yes! This little device can help prevent fraud by verifying essential account information on cheks that are presented by your customers. It can save you money and eliminate flushing money down the drain because of fraud.

    Magnetic stripe readers: This piece of restaurant hardware is used to read credit cards. You can also purchase keyboards and touch screens has a built-in magnetic strip readers for convenience.

    Fingerprint ID readers: If you want to limit which POS terminal can a staff use, then this type of restaurant hardware can be handy. You can also use this for employee logins thus preventing any of your employees from logging in inplace of somebody.

    Always rememeber when purchasing a restaurant POS system, hardawre or software, you have to make sure that you review their details first. No matter how expensive or cheap a POS equipment is, consider the environment where you’re going to use it. Regular cleaning keeps your keyboards and touch screens in top shape, vacuuming dust and lubing your receipt printer can extend its life and maintaining an over all clean workstation can help protect your POS terminal from dust and spills. You can always request for a FREE POS system quote online where local suppliers will offer you competitive price lists of any restaurant hardware and software you need based on the the information you provide them. So you would never have to waste money buying the wrong POS systems.

    15 More System Preferences Items A New Mac User Should Know About

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferenceicon1.png" alt="mac preferences" />In href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-system-preferences-items-mac-user-mac/">part 1 of this article, I covered some basic items in Apple’s Snow Leopard System Preferences. In this second part, we’ll cover a few more basic items—and for some Mac users, perhaps a couple of hidden items which are not regularly used. I’m skipping over the Internet & Wireless items in System Preferences—namely because I assume if you’re reading this that you have your Internet connection set up properly.

    MakeUseOf has also published a few other articles on wireless connections that you might find useful. Those include “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-share-the-internet-connection-between-your-mac-and-a-pc/">How to Share the Internet Connection Between Mac and PC“ and another article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-share-files-across-mac-windows-computers/">sharing file between Mac and Windows computers. There’s also an article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/safely-restrict-your-kids-computer-access-with-parental-controls-mac/">setting parental controls on your Mac. Not to be missed, MakeUseOf’s handy PDF guide: href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">The Mac Manual.

    id="more-50709"> /> Here are the preference items we’ll be looking at.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferencept2.jpg" alt="mac preferences"/>

    Energy Saver

    Though computers are nothing more than machines, they still need their rest — not only to maintain performance but also to save energy. In Energy Saver, you can set controls for when to put your computer to sleep, as well set times for it to shut down and start back up (click the Schedule button to set shut-down and restart times). I personally only restart my computer about once a week, but I do make sure it automatically put to sleep when not in use.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/energysaver.png" />

    Software Update

    One of the best ways to keep your computer in tip-top shape is to keep it backed up and updated with the latest versions of software. When Apple releases the latest version of its operating system or software, it will send a notice to your computer to download and install that update. If you want to find out whether you missed one or more updates, click on the Check Now button and it will verify if you need to update the operating system or other Apple software installed on your Mac. Note, however, that it will not check for third party applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate1.png" />

    Clicking on the Installed Software button will reveal what versions of Apple software are already installed on your computer. You can also run this check by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your Mac‘s menu bar and selecting Software Update.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate2.png" />

    Text to Speech

    MakeUseOf has already covered the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/having-a-conversation-with-your-mac-computer/">Speech Recognition feature of System Preferences, but there’s also a feature called Text to Speech which is a handy tool for having your computer read aloud text. I have often use this feature for when I’m too tired to read articles or when I‘m editing my writing. It’s of course also useful for Mac users with impaired eyesight.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/texttospeech.png" />

    If you want to use this feature, you can set a keyboard shortcut to activate it. After doing so, select some text in any application, such as Mail, and then hit your assigned keyboard shortcut. The computer will read the text aloud.

    Also, if you want or need additional computer voice assistance, click on the Open Universal Access Preferences for several useful features.

    Date & Time

    No doubt by default, you already have the date and time clock set up on your Mac; it can be done automatically. But if you ever need an audio timer, such as for work purposes, you can set one up in Date & Time, in which your Mac will announce the time on the hour, every thirty or every fifteen minutes. This is not a feature you will run 24/7 but it’s a quasi built-in timer that might come in handy.

    Time Machine

    I know of no better and easier back up system than Apple‘s Time Machine. If you’re not using it, you should. All that is required is an external hard drive, of say 500 or more gigabytes. Attach it to your computer and open the Time Machine item in System Preferences. From there, click the Select Disk button to do the initial setup. You can click the Options button to selectively exclude data on your computer that you don’t want backed up. Read this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/online-resources-learn-apples-time-machine/">article for additional information about Time Machine.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/timemachine.png" />

    Startup Disk

    If you ever need to troubleshoot your Mac or test out some questionable software on another hard drive, use the Startup Disk feature. You will need to have a bootable href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-clone-and-copy-your-hard-drive/">backup drive connected to your computer to use this feature.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/startupdisk.png" />

    Other

    If the last section, Other, of your System Preferences is not very populated, you’re probably missing out on many useful plug-ins and enhancements for your Mac. One particular item that every Mac user will want installed in this area is the href="http://growl.info/">Growl notification program. This free plug-in literally works with hundreds of href="http://growl.info/applications.php">Apple and third-party applications.

    If you ever need to remove items in this section, it can easily be done by right- or Control-clicking on the plug-in or application and selecting the Remove… button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/removeplugin.png" alt="mac preferences"/>

    15 System Preferences Items A New Mac User Should Know About [Part 2]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferenceicon1.png" alt="mac preferences" />In href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-system-preferences-items-mac-user-mac/">part 1 of this article, I covered some basic items in Apple’s Snow Leopard System Preferences.

Not to be missed, MakeUseOf’s handy PDF guide: href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">The Mac Manual.

    id="more-50709"> /> Here are the preference items we’ll be looking at.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/systempreferencept2.jpg" alt="mac preferences"/>

I personally only restart my computer about once a week, but I do make sure it automatically put to sleep when not in use.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/energysaver.png" />

Note, however, that it will not check for third party applications.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate1.png" />

    Clicking on the Installed Software button will reveal what versions of Apple software are already installed on your computer. You can also run this check by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your Mac‘s menu bar and selecting Software Update.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/softwareupdate2.png" />

It’s of course also useful for Mac users with impaired eyesight.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/texttospeech.png" />

This is not a feature you will run 24/7 but it’s a quasi built-in timer that might come in handy.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/clockannouncement.png" />

Read this href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/online-resources-learn-apples-time-machine/">article for additional information about Time Machine.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/timemachine.png" />

    Startup Disk

    If you ever need to troubleshoot your Mac or test out some questionable software on another hard drive, use the Startup Disk feature. You will need to have a bootable href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-clone-and-copy-your-hard-drive/">backup drive connected to your computer to use this feature.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/startupdisk.png" />

    If you ever need to remove items in this section, it can easily be done by right- or Control-clicking on the plug-in or application and selecting the Remove… button.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/removeplugin.png" alt="mac preferences"/>

    What You Need To Know About The Best Portable MP3 Players

    Portable mp3 players are taking the music world by storm. They offer convenience, portability, and ease of use, all in a small, feature rich package. There’s not much to not like about them. But mp3 player models are constantly changing. Therefore it’s a good idea to know what features are most important when you are trying to choose a portable mp3 player for your own use. Here are some tips to consider:

    * Consider how you plan to use your mp3 player before buying it. Will you be using it on very long trips where you have no access to your computer song collection? If so, you may want to opt for a portable mp3 player that uses a hard drive to store songs as they can hold thousands of songs at a time and you can go for a long time without hearing the same song twice. In many cases you may be able to have your entire song collection on your mp3 player that way. However, most people will probably be using their portable mp3 player just for a few hours at a time on shorter trips. In that case a flash memory player should work just fine. They can usually handle 50- 75 songs at a time and that may be all you need.

    * The best portable mp3 players also allow you to be able to upgrade the operating system of the unit whenever needed. This can be very important as the mp3 player equipment is changing constantly because it’s still a relatively new technology. So you want to be able to keep up as advancements are made, and newer file formats or compressions are introduced. Otherwise you could wind up with an obsolete player very quickly.

    * Before you buy any portable mp3 player be sure that you personally physically inspect it. This is especially critical for smaller players as they can be so small and compact that some folks with larger hands have a difficult time operating the controls. You also want to be sure that the display will meet your needs too, as some players display more information at a time than others do, and some are more readable even in low light situations than others.

    * The best portable mp3 players conserve power well too. This can be an important issue as you will most likely not have a permanent power source when you are on the go, so your battery is all you have to power the unit. Some players can go for days on a set of batteries and others can only go a few hours. So make sure that the player you choose will fit the way you intend to use it. Also be aware that some players use a battery that is rechargeable but also can’t be removed, and so must be sent back to the factory for an expensive battery replacement. The best portable mp3 players use batteries that are easy to find and change, such as AA or AAA batteries.

    Since mp3 players are still fairly new to the marketplace, many people are not as familiar with them as other pieces of electronic equipment like CD players. So it’s good to understand what features are important in the best rated mp3 players in order to make the best choice. Hopefully, the tips above can help you make the best choice.

    What you Really Need to Know About Getting Mp3 Downloadable Music From File Sharing Programs

    Getting free mp3 downloadable music from file sharing programs is extremely popular. It’s estimated that as many as sixty (60) million music lovers like you get music for your mp3 player or ipod this way. But have you ever considered the issues involved with downloading your favorite songs from file sharing programs? If you haven’t shared any music files yet, you really need to know the benefits and risks; and I wrote this article to provide you with an overview of what’s involved in getting mp3 downloadable music from file sharing programs.

    The Benefits of Downloading Music From MP3 File Sharing Programs

    The biggest draw to getting music from mp3 file sharing programs is the ability to download music you would ordinarily have to buy for free. Along with getting the music you want for free, there is no limit to the number of files or the size of the files you can download. Also, today’s p2p file sharing technology makes it possible for users to quickly search for, download and share music files at lightning speeds.

    As exciting as it is to be able to search for, find and get fast downloads of the music you want for free, there are downsides to getting mp3 downloadable music from file sharing programs.

    The Risks Involved In Downloading Music Files From MP3 File Sharing Programs

    The greatest risks surrounding downloading music files from mp3 file sharing programs involves spyware and getting sued for copyright infringement. Many popular file sharing programs expose users of the p2p (peer to peer) network to spyware, adware and computer viruses. They are free open source programs or freeware, and as such, they may be bundled with spyware that slows down your computers’ performance or adware that tracks and reports your online activities. Additional computer security risks come from the files of other users in the p2p network. However, the most controversial aspect of getting mp3 downloadable music from file sharing programs involves the sharing and/or distribution of copyrighted works that hasn’t been legally licensed by the mp3 file sharing program or service. If you download and share copyrighted music that hasn’t properly licensed for digital distribution, you expose yourself to possibly getting sued by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for copyright infringement.

    While the computer spyware and lawsuit risks are serious, there are steps a determined mp3 file sharing program user can take to reduce or eliminate those risks.

    Clearly the draw, as well as the excitement of getting free mp3 music from p2p file sharing programs is hard to resist. On the other hand, the risks to your hardware and personal finances are hard to ignore. However, if your desire for unlimited free mp3 music outweighs your concern about these risks, getting mp3 downloadable music from file sharing programs might be the way for you to go.

    Essentially there are four kinds of mp3 players on the market, and they are most easily grouped by their ability to store the digital sound files. Also keep in mind that “mp3″ has come to represent all digital sound file formats, and the most common is the WMA format. But here are the various kinds of mp3 players available:

    1. Flash memory mp3 players – These tend to be the smallest and lightest of the bunch. They use flash memory to store songs with 128MB on up to 1GB of storage. Basically 256MB can hold about 60 songs, so flash memory players are best for folks who will use their player on short trips or excursions. They are also great for joggers and exercisers since there are no moving parts that can get damaged by the constant movement.

    2. Micro-drive mp3 players – These use very small hard drives to store song data, and they usually come in around 4GB to 6GB in storage space. Because they use a hard drive they can be damaged if dropped, so that is a consideration, but they do offer much more storage capacity than the flash memory models.

    3. Hard drive mp3 players – These tend to have the highest capacity, but also the largest size of all mp3 players. Since they have 20GB to 30GB of storage space they can hold unusually large amounts of songs, perhaps even a person’s entire song collection. The trade-off is the size and weight, although it is not a major consideration. However, keep in mind that hard drives can be easily damaged if handled roughly.

    4. CD players with mp3 capability – CD players have been around for quite a while now and most people are very familiar with them. Many newer models now have the ability to play mp3 files that are recorded onto CDs from your home computer. They have no storage capacity of their own, but they can play mp3 files on your own CDs. They of course are limited in size by the CD itself, but can provide low cost mp3 listening if someone is looking for very cheap portable mp3 players.

    Any of the above choices will let you listen to clean, clear, digital sound files. The main differences have to do with how you plan on using the player to listen to your music, and how much music you want to have available at one time. You should now understand what kind of mp3 players are available, so a good strategy would be to check with some of the best mp3 player reviews online and choose the one that will most likely fit your needs best.
