Originally from Boston, Josh Barsell started out as founder of the band Transit in 2001. The band soon moved to Los Angeles and after playing many shows over the years, Transit split up in 2006. Still in LA, Josh recorded his first solo record at Sunset Sound this May.

Gaining immense popularity in the last few years, mp3s are all the rage. Stores are racing to keep mp3 players in stocks, and sites offering mp3 downloads are enjoying unprecedented traffic. Accordingly, the demand for free mp3 downloads is on the rise. While the phrase “free mp3 downloads” often conjures up images of the peer-to-peer file sharing networks that are constantly embroiled in legal battles, there are other, legal ways to get your mp3 fix without resorting to legally questionable resources.

If you’re eager to get free mp3 downloads of your favorite artist, try visiting the official website. Many artists will release tracks from past or present albums in order to generate interest and, of course, increase sales. Fully supported by the artists and their labels, these tracks are usually of high quality, and may feature deep cuts that wouldn’t get much airplay. Record label websites also sometimes offer free tracks of up and coming artists, or known artists that could use a boost in sales.

You may also get free mp3 downloads as part of a promotion from retailers eager to capitalize on the popularity of mp3s. While mp3 refers to a specific file format, the term is often used generically to refer to music files of any format. How Do File Sharing Programs Work?

Modern file sharing programs connects users directly to each other allowing them to share and download files. They are also called P2P, or peer to peer programs. Unlike old file sharing programs such as Napster who ran all connections through their servers. That is also why it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly who is downloading what.

They do not have sufficient knowledge of copyright laws. Current copyright laws allow an individual to rip MP3 provided he or she has brought a copy of the CD. However, he or she cannot give, sell or upload MP3 to others. Beware due to MP3 piracy, record companies have recently developed technologies that do not allow you to rip mp3 from CD. Add to that, they are dozens of websites on the internet proclaiming to be able to download mp3 and movies legally when they are not!

How to determine whether you can download MP3 legally?

Technically, any MP3 posted on file-sharing programs without the permission of the artist is illegal. Most commercial MP3 on file sharing networks are illegal, so my advice would be to avoid them altogether.

There are a few reputable MP3 download sites on the internet you can trust. The most famous of all is itunes from Apple. Napster has a subscription service per month that allows you to download more than two million mp3 legally. Technically, you do not own the mp3 so do not give, sell or upload to file sharing networks.

Modern technology makes music more accessible than ever, with a huge percentage of people now downloading music from the internet onto their MP3 player. Many people use file sharing sites to obtain their MP3 player files, but these sites do not have copyright ownership. This alters the stability and quality of the product, and can also lead to legal proceedings being brought against the user. Therefore, the best way to download music to your audio player is to find a legitimate site.

Online MP3 player downloads from a legitimate site have the benefit of being licensed by either the record company or the artist. This means that there is no infringement of copyright laws and so enables many benefits for the user. Approximately 35% of all MP3 player owners now use this method to download music files. Of course, licensed MP3 file downloads come with a price tag but this is minimal when compared with the cost of CDs and minidisks.

There are two ways of paying for MP3 player downloads. The first is one off fee or monthly payment that acts as a subscription. The cost involved with licensed MP3 player sites is off putting to many, but overall the advantages of subscribing outweigh the disadvantages. The licensed site guarantees a quality product for your audio player, which is safe for your computer and which follows laws and regulations. It is fast, accessible and cost effective.

Many MP3 player download sites offer free trials of its product and services so that you can test the site thoroughly before committing to any purchase. This involves being able to download a specified number of MP3 files or being able to use the services for a set length of time before a payment is required. Last year DPS Software signed four new clients. Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Jackson Parton Shipping Solicitors, Davies & Davies Associates and Clark Willis Law Firm have all chose DPS Software as their preferred supplier of software solutions for the legal profession. By signing these clients, DPS branched out into three niche areas.

NTU, Jackson Parton and Davies & Davies Associates required a bespoke solution to meet their needs. NTU required a case management system with various permission/log in rights across 4 departments including each of NTU’s 5 HR Teams, the Corporate HR Team, the Equality & Diversity Team and the HR Payroll Team.

Jackson Parton are a specialist marine law practice handling wet and dry marine, commodity and trade, insurance and related litigation and non‐contentious work. They needed a Matter Management and Accounts package with digital dictation facilities.

Davies & Davies Associates required a combined case management and accounts package for their work in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Arbitration, and Adjudication within the construction industry.

Commenting on these signings Sales Supervisor, James Drew said: “Having supplied software solutions to the legal market for over 25 years we have built a solid case management product. Inevitably, our solutions have drawn the attention of businesses outside of the legal profession for their flexibility and versatility.”

In March 2009 DPS Software announced that they had taken over the development and

maintenance, support services, sales and ongoing training duties of Access Legal Systems. The take over of Access Legal Systems means that firms such as CTurner Solicitors, who use both Access and DPS Software solutions, now use one company for the support and maintenance services of their software.

In this article, we’re going to discuss the top five resources for you to find free/cheap online legal help. These sites offer so much information that by the time we’re done you might actually consider going to law school. Sound exciting? You might want to cancel that legal consultation you’ve scheduled with your lawyer.

Before we get started, I’d like to point you to three great services we’ve previously covered in the MUO directory to find free online legal help: CivilAnswers, Avvo, & JDSupra. These are excellent resources and might be just what you’re looking for. If you’re still thirsty for more, however, here are the five sources I promised you:

LawInfo

LawInfo has an enormous amount of free resources at your disposal. They offer access to over 100,000 forms for almost any legal issue and an FAQ section where you can find answers to over 24,000 legal questions.

They have statutes, articles, how-to’s, legal guides, videos, and a library of resources to help you learn the law or find the right attorney. Their videos are really well shot and are short and to the point. I’d go on, but that’d just be bragging.

FreeAdvice

FreeAdvice offers “outstanding advice” at a “reasonable price”. This free service has a large collection of law/legal information for you to take in and allows you to ask your questions to lawyers. What sets this service apart from the rest is their forum. There they have thousands of posts and threads for you to read and you can submit your questions/thoughts directly to the community.

LawFiles.net

LawFiles.net is a place where you can submit your questions to attorneys in seconds. It has a very simple design and offers a lot of useful information. This service is free and confidential, keeping your legal matters private. You can also read recent answers, legal articles, and news.

LawGuru

LawGuru has a team of attorney contributors just waiting to answer your legal questions. They have a very simple system that lets you ask legal questions, search past questions/answers, and find local attorneys.

When submitting a question, you have the option of submitting your query as ‘free’ or ‘paid’. Paid questions allow you to hand select the attorneys you would like your question sent to and comes with 100% confidentiality, meaning your question won’t be published on the LawGuru public answers system.

Free questions are placed on a five day hold before being submitted to attorneys. When your question receives an answer, you are notified by email and the Q&A is posted to LawGuru Answers.

The Law

The Law is home to an accumulation of legal discussions, forms, guides, and FAQs. You can submit your cases for a free online legal help there, as well as locate an attorney by keyword, location, or practice area. The website is well organized and easy to read.
