10 Hilarious & Weird Personalities Like Charlie Sheen On Twitter

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/twitterlogo.png" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" />We all know that with the millions of users that are on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/twitter/">Twitter, there are bound to be some pretty interesting accounts to follow. In fact, there are way too many that should be mentioned as worthy of your time, but sadly that number has to be cut down dramatically for the purposes of this post.

Also note that the title of this post says that the following accounts are “hilarious and weird like Charlie Sheen on Twitter”. This is not entirely true, as I think href="https://twitter.com/charliesheen">Charlie Sheen is on a level of his own, and I’m sure he wants just that. If you’re reading this Charlie, you’re welcome.

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

Finally, if neither one of those two suit you well, how about looking at href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson‘s account? Personally, I’ve found his show to be my favorite, simply because of the randomness of what happens. His Twitter account brings a lot of tweets with it that make you laugh simply by the strange randomness from each tweet.

My favorite recent tweet: “My 10 yr old son just found out about the NASCAR driver named Dick Trickle. I may have to get oxygen. The kid is losing it.”

2 YouTube Personalities

href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/raywj_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

If a personality who actually landed a job on national television isn’t the direction you want to go in, you can always try YouTube personalities. There are so many out there that it’s downright ridiculous. So I’ll cut it short and only name two, as YouTubers don’t all automatically have a Twitter account.

Our first person is href="https://www.twitter.com/raywj">Ray William Johnson, who currently has the most subscribed channel on YouTube, and regularly gets well over 5 million hits per video. He’s a great online comedian with a good team to back him up, and the random tidbits that land on Twitter are worth seeing as well.

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

Hey look, href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg is on Twitter too! Well, not really. It’s a parody account, as Mark is clearly happy on Facebook and Google+ (yes, he’s on Google+, up to no good I assume). Anyway, this parody account cracks plenty of jokes about new Facebook features and other similar topics. Simply put, if you’re not a complete fan of Facebook, you’ll get a kick from this account.

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

No Twitter experience is complete without some accounts that represent imaginary characters, especially Star Wars. Therefore, I definitely recommend you look at href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">DarthVader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR for your funny Star Wars jokes.

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

The final two in our list are random accounts that I felt needed to be added to my list. First is href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains, an account where problems that people in the first world have are poked at with a funny stick, although each tweet does make you think a little. It’s a strange combination of funny and sad. I still enjoy to read their tweets.

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

The final account on our list is the great href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice. Yes, their funny talents don’t just stop at strangely wonderful and funny commercials and YouTube videos, but continues even on their Twitter account! I have to admit, their commercials and social media activities are definitely working well for them.

My favorite recent tweet: “What’s the natural career progression after nuclear physicist, lady-kissing champion and mustachioed billionaire business tycoon?”

Overall, there are plenty of Twitter accounts that can be funny, weird or both. I find all the accounts that I listed to definitely be funny, while a good number of them (but not all) are “weird”. This list is not meant to be a definitive “these people are hilarious and weird, while nobody else is” list, so feel free to dispute the list and offer up your own suggestions in the comments.

My favorite recent tweet: “Are human souls considered low carb?”

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kassemg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/kassemg">KassemG is our second YouTuber who isn’t nearly as popular as Ray William Johnson but just as funny (in a slightly more inappropriate way, if that’s even possible). Either way, he’s worth checking out because the more laughs the better, am I right?

My recent favorite tweet: “I have a tumblr now but haven’t put anything on it. Is nudity allowed?

3 Parody/Imaginary Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/ceoMarkZuck">Mark Zuckerberg

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mark_zuckerberg_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent tweet: “Smart lists for friends: they’re like Circles, but less round and not ruined by Google.”

href="https://twitter.com/darthvader">Darth Vader and href="https://twitter.com/DeathStarPR">DeathStarPR

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/darthvader_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird twitter accounts" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent Darth Vader tweet: “The best part of waking up is ewok in your cup.”

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deathstarpr_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite recent DeathStarPR tweet: “Tyler Perry is the highest paid man in Hollywood. See, this is why you guys don’t deserve to not get exploded.”

2 Miscellaneous Accounts

href="https://twitter.com/FirstWorldPains">FirstWorldPains

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/firstworldpains_tweet2.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="246" />

My favorite tweet: “ href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-windows-internet-explorer-accessing-internet/">Internet Explorer.”

href="https://www.twitter.com/oldspice">Old Spice

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/oldspice_tweet3.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

3 TV Comedians

href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jimmy_kimmel_tweet2.jpg" alt="charlie sheen on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

First up is href="https://twitter.com/jimmykimmel">Jimmy Kimmel. He has always been pretty popular with his antics on late night television, and his Twitter account is a great extension of that. If you’re a fan of his show, you’ll love his Twitter account just as much.

My favorite recent tweet: “In 20 years there will be a nostalgic app that makes all your pictures look like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/basics-properly-resizing-image-files-photoshop/">crappy old 12-megapixel photos.

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conan_obrien_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

href="https://twitter.com/ConanOBrien">Conan O’Brien would indeed be another account you can follow. He also brings many of his antics from his TV show to his Twitter account, with a Conan twist. I enjoy his show a lot whenever I have time to see it.

My favorite recent tweet: “Just learned the hard way that “Cajun-style” is not a quality you want in a proctology exam.”

href="https://twitter.com/CraigyFerg">Craig Ferguson

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/craig_ferguson_tweet2.jpg" alt="weird people on twitter" width="550" height="246" />

5 Awesome Games Like Angry Birds When You Can’t Get Enough

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_104815.png" alt="games like angry birds" />Are your fingers itching to sling more items across a field to crush your enemies and get to the next level in a game? If you’ve been playing Angry Birds, I imagine you’re probably either satisfied with that one game (and aren’t looking to play any more), or you’re ready to move on and take on any other physics-based, catapulting games that come your way. If you are experiencing the latter, you might like what you’ll find on this post.

We’ve gathered a number of popular catapulting games like Angry Birds in style, but keep in mind that the idea of a game where the objective is to destroy your enemies in the field with slingshots did exist before Angry Birds was conceived. Thus, there are many more games that could be on this list, but we don’t want you to be totally unproductive, do we? If you’re ready to take on some new challenges, read on!

Crush The Castle [ href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/crush-the-castle-free/id329941560?mt=8">iOS, href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.namcowireless.ctc">Android & href="http://armorgames.com/play/3614/crush-the-castle">Web]

align="center"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_011704.jpg" alt="2011-09-13_011704" width="580" height="832" border="0" />

Price: free for iOS ( href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crush-the-castle/id318639200?mt=8">$0.99 version available for iPhone & href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crush-the-castle-hd/id443011378?mt=8#">iPad) and web; $0.99 for Android

One of the first few physics-based games that launched in the App Store, Crush The Castle is an extremely popular game where your job is to destroy the other castles in the area and wipe out the enemies with your choice of 8 different catapults. This game is so popular that it produced a successor, href="http://armorgames.com/play/6137/crush-the-castle-2">Crush The Castle 2 with additional challenging levels, but with the same objectives.

If you want a game that’s easy to familiarize yourself with coming from Angry Birds, this is likely to be one of your best bets.

href="http://armorgames.com/play/4819/siege-master">Siege Master [Web]

align="center"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_014448.jpg" alt="games like angry birds" width="580" height="624" border="0" />

Price: free

From the same developers that host the previous game, Armor Games, comes another physics-based game set in medieval times where the objective of the game is to conquer the kingdom using a variety of siege weapons (e.g. a catapult). If you’ve grown quite fond of knocking down structures just like in Angry Birds and Crush the Castle, this is one game you shouldn’t miss.

href="http://armorgames.com/play/5137/sandcastle">Sandcastle [Web]

align="center"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_094609.png" alt="pc games like angry birds" width="579" height="330" border="0" />

Price: free

This is the third game on this list made by the same company that made the two previous games, Crush the Castle and Siege Master. You’ll notice the website truly holds to its name as it seems to offer games mostly in medieval settings. In Sandcastle, your goal is to defend your city from the invading ships by shooting cannons and sinking said ships.

Much like Angry Birds and other physics-based games, this game requires some strategy. Unlike the previous games, the graphics for Sandcastle resemble the style of Angry Birds a bit more in that they’re more colorful and cartoony, but not overly kiddish.

href="http://www.gameninja.com/games/ninja-dogs.html">Ninja Dogs [Web]

align="center"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_023800.jpg" alt="pc games like angry birds" width="578" height="835" border="0" />

Price: free

This is a highly addictive game that has been played over 600,000 times and given a rating of 5 stars on the Ninja Games developer website. In Ninja Dogs, your goal is to rescue the Ninja Dog Master from a cat by launching dogs into the air and crushing all the cats in sight. The graphics on this game are a bit reminiscent of Angry Birds, especially since the game contains vivid colors, a cartoony style, and huge-headed dogs with tiny bodies, much like the angry birds only seem to have bodies and no heads.

href="http://armorgames.com/play/6833/sieger">Sieger [Web]

align="center"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-09-13_101736.png" alt="games like angry birds" width="580" height="435" border="0" />

Price: free

I should admit something. I’m not much of a gamer so I don’t actually play Angry Birds that often (though I have tried to like it), but Sieger is one game that had me hooked. In this game, you don’t shoot sideways. You should shoot straight to the target (like a first-person shooter game). Your goal is to crush the enemy (the individuals without an exclamation point on their heads) by flinging items and demolishing blocks. You must figure out a way to finish off all the enemies with the allotted ammo and without hurting your allies, or your siege will fail.

In the more advanced levels where there are more enemies standing together, when you crush them, sometimes there’s more blood depiction than I would like, potentially making it a risky game for younger children. Other than that, Sieger is a very engaging game that requires you to think strategically.

Whether you’re looking to kill time, to improve strategic thinking skills, or just to have fun, Angry Birds is just one of many games that can meet your needs. Each of these five physics-based, catapulting games like Angry Birds should also make a nice addition to your collection of good games.

It’s your turn to tell us what games you find the most challenging but highly engaging as well. Let us know about your favorite games (mobile or web) in the comments below!

Cold Calling Computer Technicians: Don’t Fall For A Scam Like This [Scam Alert!]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/intro1.jpg" alt="" />You’ve probably heard the term “don’t scam a scammer” but I’ve always been fond of “don’t scam a tech writer” myself. I’m not saying we’re infallible, but if your scam involves the Internet, a href="../service/windows">Windows PC and a cold calling technician, it won’t take long for the penny to drop.

I’m basing this article on my experience with a would-be scammer who called my parents house last week. This isn’t the first time Mr Windows Repair Guy has so helpfully graced us with his detailed instructions, and this time I was determined to find out exactly what the deal was.

Tell your friends, tell your relatives – Microsoft does not call to fix your PC.

The Call

When the phone rang, the guy on the other end claimed to be from “Windows Technical Support”. Many people would probably notice that something is awry at this point, as Microsoft isn’t known for cold calling to tell you there’s a problem with your computer. Straight away I knew it was the good old “you’ve got viruses, and we can fix ‘em” scam, so instead of the “where’s the Start button on my Linux desktop?” routine I had fun with last time, I thought I’d play along.

I was informed that Microsoft had detected that I had viruses on my computer, and that if I didn’t follow his advice to remove them, my computer could “crash unexpectedly at any time” (tell me something I don’t know).

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/1management.png" alt="" width="572" height="329" />

So I sat down at my parents’ new Windows 7 machine and asked him what sort of viruses I had. He told me to click on Start, right-click on Computer and choose Manage. Then I was told to click Event Viewer, Custom Views then Administrative Events.

This is where the scam gets somewhat believable. This screen displays a log of messages from various services and programs running on your PC. At first glance, there are a lot of red crosses and warning triangles, which could probably look quite serious to an average user.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2administrativeevents.png" alt="" width="545" height="375" />

Apparently, these were my viruses!

The Fix

I was then asked if I could delete any of these new-found viruses with a simple right-click and Delete. As we all know by now – these aren’t viruses. Additionally, you can’t remove the log with the right-click context menu, so I guess they’re just here to stay?

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/3myvirus.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="263" />

Of course the fix was only round the corner. Once I’d informed my new best friend that I couldn’t remove them, he told me to open Internet Explorer (!) and assured me there was software available to help victims like me.

The website I was told to visit was AMMYY.com (which we are not linking to), but the software didn’t seem to match up. This website claims to provide a remote desktop solution, not the malware dressed up as security software I was expecting.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/4canuhasdelete.png" alt="" width="294" height="557" />

At this point I had been on the phone for a good 15 minutes, with much of the conversation lost in translation as I struggled to understand the heavy Indian accent. I had words, informed him that I knew exactly what was going on and would be reporting the incident to BT (the telephone provider) as well as shaming him in any way possible and bid him adieu.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ammyy.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="356" />

Didn’t stop him calling back immediately though did it?

The Cost

There are a plethora of reasons you shouldn’t trust a cold caller, but even more so when it comes to your PC, your personal information and suspicious software. The costs associated with someone gaining remote access to your computer could be devastating. Sensitive information relating to bank accounts, passwords for paid services and documents that could be used to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-ways-prevent-identity-theft-computer-hackers-2/">forge an identity could be stolen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/5ohnoeitsascam.png" alt="" width="561" height="458" />

Goods could be ordered via services that save your billing information and any sites that remember logins will be easily accessible. In addition to theft, safeguards like anti-virus programs might be disabled and further malicious software like keyloggers and trojans could be installed.

There is unfortunately very little that can be done to combat these scams. I phoned BT and was told that the numbers from this type of call are virtually untraceable, but calls came from “somewhere in Asia” and were a persistent problem. If the perpetrators are using href="../tags/voip">VoIP services like Skype, the calls are not easy to trace, and it’s not impossible to use a ringback service to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-8-online-tools-to-identify-the-owner-of-a-phone-number/">decipher the number.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article has provided some brief insight into this kind of scam, which is prevalent all over the world. Unless you fancy becoming part of the big bad botnet, you’d better never trust a caller like this. Variations are common – sometimes it’s bogus anti-virus software that requires payment, or similar – so remain vigilant.

I’m not sure whether AMMYY.com are a legitimate company or not, but Panda’s Firefox plugin doesn’t rate the website and nor does a quick Google search which brings up all sorts of “scam” notices. I’m going to recommend that nobody uses an AMMYY.com product, purely on the basis that there are href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-easy-screen-sharing-and-remote-access-tools-all-free/">lots of quality proven alternatives that aren’t linked to dishonest individuals who want your money, data and bandwidth.

Have you had any phone calls like this? Do you know anyone who has? Consider sharing this article, and spreading the word. Comments and discussion are welcome below this article.

Read Like A Hipster With These 3 Libraries For Your Browser

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/B7ax35.png?54167"/>So what if you have an extensive library on your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/amazon/">Amazon href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/kindle/">Kindle? Who cares if you have a bunch of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ibooks/">iBooks downloaded to your href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/ipad/">iPad? Some of the best novels can be found using just your Internet browser, and the best part is that you’ve probably never heard of them before.

So don your sans-prescription dark-rimmed glasses, and put on your impractical-yet-fashionable summer scarf. MakeUseOf is about to get hipster with a whole bunch of indie novels that you can read online.

href="http://www.onlinenovels.net">Online Novels

As a basic link list,  href="http://www.onlinenovels.net">Online Novels does not provide a sexy, decked-out, graphically-oriented website. However, it does exhibit quite a few novels with very detailed and articulate descriptions of each one.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/OnlineNovels.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="384" />

Despite Online Novels’ vintage HTML that is so ironic, it offers some quality material for you to scroll through. Most authors have their own home-pages, so you can even check out their other material.

Most of the books that you will find here are free, and they can typically be read using just your browser. There are even a few short stories and poems if you  just want a quick read.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/OnlineNovels2.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="318" />

In addition to the in-browser novels, there are actually some titles available directly from authors for your Amazon Kindle. Granted, if you can’t pay out for these, you could always just use your parents’ credit card in true hipster fashion.

href="http://www.booksie.com/">Booksie

href="http://www.booksie.com">Booksie is a community for aspiring writers to publish their work one chapter at a time. This site is a little more user-friendly than its Online Novels counterpart, and it also offers free audiobooks, PDFs, and eBooks.

(Please note, if you want to use your desktop to read the cleaner eBook versions, you should try out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/koobits-desktop-ebook-reader/">Koobits.)

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Booksie1.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="272" />

Writers use Booksie with the intent of getting their work read by the world. You can do your part and join the fun as a reader of novels while they are released piece by piece. The site really focuses on the in-progress work of a book, so you actually see it develop in episodic chapters (a la Great Expectations by Charles Dickens).

class="size-full wp-image-80738 aligncenter" title="Booksie7" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Booksie7.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="541" />

This site is great for having something new to read, but if your imagination palate craves something light, Booksie also has a wide variety of poems and short stories to choose from.

However, if you aren’t big on fan-fiction, you should be warned that there are a few of them here, but generally speaking, the site has its share of good literature.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Booksie3.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="340" />

The work found on Booksie might not be of the best quality, seeing that it is written by authors who put fingers on the keyboard in their spare time, but the nice part of this is that each piece comes directly from the original creator and is completely untouched by the hands of a market-minded agent or publisher. Read with an open mind, and you just might be able to appreciate some of it.

href="http://www.webook.com">WeBook

As previously mentioned in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/webook-online-book-publishing-wannabe-authors/">MakeUseOf directory,  href="http://www.webook.com">WeBook is like the Texas cage-fighting match of online literature. The premise of the entire site is that authors submit their work, let you read it, and as it gains popularity (by your votes), it will eventually reach an agent who can get it published… and make it mainstream.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/WeBook1.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="355" />

While this site was initially developed for authors just trying to catch a break, it provides totally free content for those who want to sit back with a cup of Earl Grey and enter someone else’s mind for a little while. However, if you are an author, you have to pay a one-time submission fee.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/WeBook2.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="406" />

Each book is run through a gauntlet of three rounds that are all part of a process called “PagetoFame”. Authors start out with a single page submission for the first round, get voted up to a five pages round, and after that, they go on to the final fifty pages round.

If the book-in-the-making gets past these three rounds, it goes on to the Literary Showcase where agents can take a gander at it.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/WeBook3.png?54167" alt="" width="580" height="425" />

You’ll primarily only be reading parts of unfinished books via WeBook, but when one finally makes it as a New York Times bestseller, you can tell everyone you know, “I read that chapter before it was even published.”

Conclusion

So maybe these sites aren’t going to make you a hipster, but they are going to give you a look at some fresh reading material by a few unheard-of authors. This just goes to show you that you don’t always have to depend on the publishing houses to tell you what to read.

What are some good pieces of work that you have found using these sites? Would you recommend them? Also, what other sites have you found that host independent novels?

    Learn How To Play Ultimate Frisbee Like A Pro With These 5 Websites

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/play_ultimate1.png?54167" alt="" />Ultimate Frisbee has been around for years but in the last few years it seems to have been making a serious resurgence. With so many new players out there, it puts a serious burden on the guys who have been around to try and show these new players how the game needs to be played, and all the basic techniques that are required. Thankfully, there are plenty of websites that can handle this load for the old school players, and help the new guys learn a lot about the game off the field, so on the field they can focus on implementing, rather than learning.

    It’s easy to think “I’ve been throwing a disk around since I was a little kid, Ultimate Frisbee should be easy for me”. When I first started playing I certainly thought this. However, as soon as I stepped on field and I realized just how many different ways you can throw a Frisbee, I knew it was time to do some digging for knowledge. At MakeUseOf, we have previously covered  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-great-sites-for-beginners-to-learn-how-to-play-golf/">Golf,  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/learn-fight-ufc-fighter-3-sites/">Mixed Martial Arts and many other sports, so now it is time for us to teach you all about Frisbee.

    Best Websites To Learn Ultimate Frisbee

    I hope to save you the effort I went through digging around for good websites on Ultimate Frisbee by showing you the ones that I have found to be the best.

    1. class="vt-p" href="http://youtube.com">YouTube

    Obviously, when trying to learn anything, YouTube is an incredibly valuable resource. It’s not going to be the most organized way to find specific information about Ultimate, but it certainly has a lot of videos. There are some very prolific users on there who are worth subscribing to such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/rjmcleod04">Ultimate Rob and class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/brodiesmith21">Everything Ultimate.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tube.png?54167" alt="" width="674" height="496" />

    The one major thing YouTube offers that can’t seem to be found elsewhere is full games. It is very valuable for new players to watch high level teams play to really get a feel for how they position themselves, and what throws they use in certain situations. Plus, it is downright entertaining!

    style="height: 430px; width: 580px;" width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4Hx8oSsB4E?version=3" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4Hx8oSsB4E?version=3" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    2. class="vt-p" href="http://ultitraining.wordpress.com/">UltiTraining

    Their website is not the prettiest to look at, and it doesn’t get updated as frequently as some of the other sites on the list, but they do have a bunch of great articles to help new players learn some techniques. One of my personal favorites is their article about laying out (a layout is a technique for diving to catch a disc).

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ulti1.png?54167" alt="" width="632" height="340" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://ultitraining.wordpress.com/2011/01/17/learning-to-layout-practice-progressions/">This article features some great drills for practicing laying out without hurting yourself. After all, in Ultimate Frisbee, style points can be worth just as much as actual goals.

    3. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/blog/">Ultimate Handbook

    Ultimate Handbook is another great site for techniques, but they take it a step further with a lot of strategy. They are the only site that I have found that features charts explaining the different plays and formations of Ultimate Frisbee. These charts are actually animated, so you can actually see how the play should break down.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/chartsulti.png?54167" alt="" width="556" height="617" />

    One of the most frustrating things for a new player can be to have one of the more experienced players on the field call out a set or a play, like a stack, and have no idea where they need to be. With the information in Ultimate Handbook, they can rectify the situation and learn the plays.

    4. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page">Ultipedia

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ultipedia.png?54167" alt="" width="579" height="203" />

    It’s pretty hard to make a list of the top websites for any topic without including a community based Wiki. The fact is, when enough knowledgeable people get together and share that knowledge, we all win. This is no exception with the Ultipedia. There is pretty much anything you would want to know about Ultimate Frisbee here.

    Ultipedia also includes breakdowns of all the rules of Ultimate Frisbee. If you ever want to know how a rule works, this is the place to check.

    5. class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/">Ultimate Rob

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/">Ultimate Rob is a name that came up during the YouTube section, and while his YouTube channel is great, his website is where the real action is. There is such a wide array of information on his site that is mind boggling.

    He has sections for the basics, for advanced players, technique breakdowns for every throw in the game, and even drills and training anyone can do to improve their Ultimate Frisbee game. Ultimate Rob even goes into the psychology behind the Ultimate Frisbee player. I especially enjoy his class="vt-p" href="http://www.ultimaterob.com/2011/05/19/positive-feedback/">article about positive feedback for new players.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/rob.png?54167" alt="" width="681" height="573" />

    Overall, just an incredible website with so much content that is a must stop place for any one who wants to play Ultimate Frisbee.

    Now Go Out & Play!

    Now you have all the information, you need to improve your game at Ultimate Frisbee. So hit the field and implement all these new techniques. For all you pros out there, share these links with some of the new players in your group, and prepare to be much less frustrated by how bad they are.

    Do you have any websites you use for Ultimate Frisbee? Share them in the comments! />

    Slideshare’s Zipcast – Like Ustream For Presentation-Based Meetings

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Zipcast-300.png" alt="" width="240" height="179" />Have you attended a few online meetings in your time? Were they easy to use? Did you need to download the presentation separately? Did the presenters have trouble with audio-visual setup and responses to audience questions? Well, Slideshare has a solution to all this and it’s free!

    href="http://slideshare.com/zipcast">Zipcast is href="http://slideshare.com/">Slideshare’s newest feature, which essentially allows you to run a Ustream-style chat and meeting space. You are able to give a voice-over and video presence to the presentation and to control when the slides change. Meanwhile, your audience can chat about the presentation, meaning you’re able to monitor questions your audience might have in real time. It’s basically a very simple, free way to co-ordinate an online meeting.

    id="more-65833">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Zipcast-Splash.png" alt="" />

    If you like, you can learn a lot more about Zipcast by watching href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mYrQGQqMGY">Robert Scoble’s video interview with the Slideshare Founder and CEO.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2mYrQGQqMGY?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2mYrQGQqMGY?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Start A Zipcast

    The easiest way to start a Zipcast is to go to the presentation you wish to use and click on “Zipcast“. Yes, it’s possible to create a Zipcast on any public presentation on Slideshare.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Zipcast-From-Presentation1b.png" alt="" />

    Slideshare lets you choose whether to make your Zipcast public or private. Private Zipcasts are able to be password protected and ideal for company meetings, whereas public Zipcasts are perfect for teaching and sharing ideas on given subjects. Even if you choose not to have a password on a private Zipcast, your meeting will only be visible to those who have the URL. It won’t be listed in the Slideshare Zipcast listings.

    Then all you need to do is set up your camera and microphone using Flash, then share details of your Zipcast meeting until you’ve got an audience.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Flash-Mic-and-Camera.png" alt="" />

    Here’s what a Zipcast looks like in action. You can see the presenter video and the chat log on the right, the presentation on the left. Below this is a collection of pictures of the participants. Everything is all in one centralised location, so there’s no fuss.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Zipcast-In-Action.png" alt="" />

    Sharing On Social Media

    When you start a Zipcast you are asked if you’d like to share the Zipcast on Facebook. It’s a great way to let your friends know you’ve started the meeting and tell them they can join in. Later, you can still easily invite people to join you. Also, if you’re chatting in a Zipcast you can share your messages on Facebook. I would have liked to see Twitter as an option there, too.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Share-Zipcast.png" alt="" />

    Limitations of Zipcasts

    Things you can’t yet do with Slideshare’s Zipcast meetings:

    • Scheduling.
    • Recording.
    • Allowing multiple users to lead the presentation.

    However, all of these features are in the works (as shown in href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mYrQGQqMGY">Robert Scoble’s video interview).Also, you can create your meeting URL ahead of time, then email people, create a Facebook event or use some other way of scheduling attendance for your Zipcast. You could also use a screencast creator to save your presentation along with the chat records.

    Despite the limitations though, href="http://slideshare.com/">Slideshare’s href="http://slideshare.com/zipcast">Zipcasts are a lot easier to set up, use and manage than other online presentation systems I’ve seen, such as Vokle. I think it has a solid future ahead.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Recent-Zipcasts.png" alt="" />

    How to Search YouTube Like a PRO with Google Advanced Operators

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/youtube-search.jpg" alt="youtube search"/> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/comprehensive-guide-youtube-player-keyboard-shortcuts/">I love YouTube. I use it for inspiration or to kill an idle hour (which I normally don’t have). I love the variety of user-generated content: different styles, topics and perspectives. I love it that YouTube is huge.

    But with the resource being enormous comes one issue: it is almost impossible to search it efficiently. And there are no official guides on how to search YouTube to actually find something.

    However, not many people know how flexible YouTube’s search function actually is.

    id="more-63993"> /> About 2 years ago (maybe more) Google started operating YouTube search — if you haven’t noticed Google Video Search and YouTube search have even identical (advanced) search options. And with Google coming into play, there turns out to be some really tricky and smart ways to search YouTube using href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/master-the-google-search-like-a-god-save-time/">Google search operators.

    The Issue

    YouTube (like Google Video Search) has some handy sorting options that allow you to find videos by:

    • Relevancy (based on your search query);
    • Upload date (to find most recent videos);
    • View count (to find the most viewed videos);
    • Rating (to find the highest rated videos).

    I love using the latter two options to look through the most popular YouTube videos on any topic.

    The only issue is that when you sort by anything other than relevancy, the results are likely to be highly irrelevant.

    Let’s compare:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/youtube-search-02.jpg" alt="youtube search" width="550" height="306" />

    Sorting makes results absolutely off-topic. Luckily, we do have an option to sort YouTube search results while still getting relevant results: YouTube advanced search operators.

    YouTube Advanced Search Operators

    I don’t think the search operators I am listing here are anywhere to be found in YouTube’s documentation. All that is listed on the official “Advanced YouTube search” href="http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=111997">page is the set of the usual search options you see below the search field:

    You can filter results by:

    • Type of results, such as Videos, Channels, or Playlists
    • Subject category
    • Video length
    • Video quality
    • Features, such as Closed captions, Partner videos, or Rentals

    However, as we have seen above, filtering and sorting seldom triggers relevant results.

    To bypass this issue, you need to use advanced operators which were inherited from Google search and are really very helpful:

    1. Use quotes to force the exact match

    This operator may come particularly in handy when you are sure which exact key phrases you want to be included into the search results, for example, the name of a movie or a music clip.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/youtube-search-03.jpg" alt="youtube video search" width="455" height="370" />

    2. Use plus (+) sign to force a word in the results

    If one of your words gets dropped out from search results, this operator may save a lot of your time. Similarly, you can use the minus (-) sign to force YouTube search to exclude any irrelevant but persistent words from the search results.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/youtube-search-04.jpg" alt="youtube video search" width="390" height="279" />

    3. Force any word to appear in the video title with help of INTITLE: operator

    This trick turns out to be very useful if you, for example, keep getting irrelevant results (video pages that only mention your search term in comments or loosely in description).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/youtube-search-05.jpg" alt="youtube search" width="550" height="263" />

    Any more YouTube search tricks to force relevant results even when using sorting options? />

MakeUseOf is one of the best and most popular tech blogs on the internet! Who wouldn’t want to write for us? However, we have always turned down guest post requests, simply because we have always had more than enough submissions from our permanent staff.

    However, we have now decided that perhaps we are going about things the wrong way here. Perhaps MakeUseOf would benefit from the wisdom of people who are too busy and too committed to work for us full time and long term. People who would perhaps appreciate the ability to get the occasional article in?

    Therefore, starting from today, we are going to start looking at guest post submissions – and we will pay for them too if accepted. And link to your website. Seriously, what is there not to like?

    id="more-60588"> /> However, we do have to impose a few rules. Therefore we have made a webpage which details what you need to do – and not do – in order for us to seriously look at your guest post submissions. Head on over to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/guest-write-makeuseof">MakeUseOf Guest Posting page to see what we are looking for – and not looking for. Then send us your submissions and if we like what we see, we’ll be in touch.

    As well as accepting guest posts for the first time, we also have a few other things up our sleeve for 2011 which will make MakeUseOf even better. To make sure you don’t miss out, make sure you subscribe to class="vt-p" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/Makeuseof">our RSS feed or email updates. />

    Do you suffer from ‘slow windows’ recently? Just for you to know, there are so many things you can do if you want to get a faster pc startup, but, there’s another simple and more elegant way to do that which basically doesn’t require you to have any special technical skills or try to fix your System by yourself. Keep reading the following review and quickly discover the best way that’ll enable you to dramatically skyrocket your computer’s performance.

    If your pc keeps freezing or maybe you get weird error messages, boot errors, and other familiar operating system error messages – in most cases it is in high probability related to your System’s registry system. Over time, when you add various programs onto your pc, it happens that some programs aren’t installed or uninstalled correctly, while corrupting parts of your windows registry.

    Basically, the registry is a Windows db – it stores information about your hardware and software installations. Your windows system uses this data while using each of your hardware or software. Now you can imagine how sensitive your system is.

    If you wish to get a faster pc startup you should maintain your windows registry unharmed – damaged win-registry can cause your Personal computer serious performance problems that usually slow down or even freeze programs and even your entire system.

    Since the registry is very complex, it is highly recommended to avoid trying to repair it by yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing – it can cause you even more problems. The safest way to get a faster pc startup is to use a recommended registry maintenance application and simply let it scan, identify, and fix any registry error for you. This cleaning process can effectively fix your Pc’s speed problems and maintain your System’s functionality on the best side. The majority of these solutions offer scheduled auto-repair tasks and automatic system updates, so it easily enables you to keep your pc optimized 24/7.
