Have you listed your employer in your profile only to see a link appear to a community page with the same name? Do you want to know how to get it to link to your employer’s Facebook page instead? This happens to a lot of people “” it’s one of Facebook’s special annoyances. Luckily, it’s able to be fixed. It’s a little href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/hacks/">hacky, but it works.

For many of us, that little link in our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/facebook/">Facebook profiles is the only information our Facebook contacts see about our employment. It’s quite important that the link goes to the right page “” for entrepreneurs especially. So, today we’ll take you through a step-by-step process for getting that link right.

1. Get The Web Developer Firefox Add-on

This process will involve both Firefox and the href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/web-developer/">Web Developer add-on. My apologies to non-Firefox users, but this plug-in isn’t available for other browsers as far as I know. Grab the add-on and restart Firefox. A new toolbar will appear, which you’ll need to use later.

2. Go To Your Employer’s Page & Get Their ID Number

You’ll need to visit your employer’s Facebook page to get the ID number of the page. For some, this will be visible in the URL of the page. For others, the page will have a custom URL and you won’t see it there. Instead, simply hover over the page’s user picture and you’ll see the ID number appear in the URL at the bottom left of the Firefox window. 3. Remove Current Employer Details

You might have already entered your employer details, but often this process doesn’t work when employment details are entered. Go to your profile, click “ href="https://www.facebook.com/editprofile.php">Edit Profile“ and then “ href="https://www.facebook.com/editprofile.php?sk=eduwork">Education and Work“. Edit the entry and save the information in a text file for now, then delete the entry from Facebook.

4. Enter Employer Details (Again)

Next, you’ll need to add the employer. With the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-creative-facebook-profile-page/">new Facebook profiles, this page-linking trick only works if you’ve already entered the name and then you edit it. Type the name in and click on the highlighted entry Facebook presents you.

In the next screen, don’t save the employer by clicking “Add Job“. This is where you’ll need to use the Web Developer add-on.

5. Using The Web Developer Add-on

When you installed the Web Developer add-on, a toolbar will have appeared in Firefox. While you’re adding your employer details, you’ll need to find “Forms” on that toolbar and choose “Display Form Details“. This will turn your page into a nice mess, but it’s essential to get this working.

Look for fields marked with input name=”employer_id“. There should be two of them visible: one for the field where you would normally add a new employer and one within the details section of the employer you just added. It’s this second one you’re looking for.

Enter the ID number from your employer’s Facebook page into this field (replacing the old number there), then click “Add Job“. This creates the employer entry with the correct page link. Don’t add any employment details, like your position until later or it won’t save. Just click “Add Job“ and go back to it later and fill in the details.

You may now go to “Web Developer Toolbar” > “Forms” > “Display Form Detail” and uncheck it to go back to the normal view. It’s also now possible to edit the employer details as normal to add position details and length of service.

Success!

You should now be able to view your profile and click on the employer link to the correct Facebook Page. For years, I tried to keep a current list, but my family or friends would move, their address and phone numbers would change – and inevitably my entire href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/mobical-backup-mobile-contacts-calendar/">mobile address book would be completely outdated. There has never been a very good way of “automatically” updating contact lists. However, now people willingly submit and update their own contact details online, so what better way to maintain an updated contact list than to extract href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/add-facebook-profile-pictures-to-your-address-book-mac-only/">and sync it all from Facebook?

I decided to search for the best mobile address book applications that could automatically connect to and sync up with all of my Facebook friends. The following four applications from the Android Market are the best apps to accomplish this amazing feat of contact automation.

EboBirthday

My favorite contacts application, even though it’s the simplest, is EboBirthday. Keeping track of birthdays is something that I’m notoriously bad at. I forget my own birthday, let alone my brother’s or sister’s. Thankfully, EboBirthday comes to the rescue with an app that can import birthday information from your Facebook or Google contacts, or from any previous birthday lists you might have been trying to maintain.

The beauty of this is that it acts like a central repository for all of your birthday data. Once you’re connected to Facebook, you’ll never forget another birthday again. On the downside, not everyone is completely honest about their listed birthday on Facebook. So, for those contacts, you’ll probably have to update manually.

PicDial for Facebook

Remembering birthdays is nice, but the most valuable part of being plugged into Facebook is that it’s essentially a database of contact information that auto-updates itself. For that reason, it is the best source to sync up to if you want to maintain your phone’s contact list without any effort on your part. A very cool app for doing this is called PicDial. PicDial can pull in friend data from either Facebook or MySpace.

It can also automatically use your own profile picture on Facebook for an image to display on your friend’s phone when you call them.

Once all of your friends’ data is uploaded, including phone numbers, email addresses and any other contact information they’ve offered, you will finally have the following quick-dial pad. It’s like a speed-dial app that lets you call people instantly by just tapping on their picture.

ContApps

One of my favorite apps to connect my Facebook contacts with my Android address book is ContApps. It not only pulls in photos and contact info from your Facebook friends list, but it’ll also show you your friends’ latest Facebook status update as well. The main page looks a lot like PicDial’s speed-dial screen, but I found that the ContApps list wasn’t quite as well organized or easy to navigate.

What I liked the most about this app was the individual screen for each friend. Everything you need is all in one place, the person’s birthday, work email, home email, IM contact and phone number.

The buttons at the bottom are pretty cool. Social feeds doesn’t quite work yet as far as I can tell, but the “Google It” button will Google the person’s name – so you can view Internet details about the person whenever you like. From reviews I’ve seen, it also shows you the location of your friends and it pulls in Twitter data as well. As I mentioned above, you can view the person’s current Facebook status by tapping on their picture.

Overall, I think this is a useful app and goes a long way toward connecting the Android address book with popular social networks. If you want to give it a shot and use it to import your Facebook contacts, you can download it with the following QR code.

AddressBook for Android

By far, my favorite app to connect all of my favorite social networks with my Android href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/address-book">address book is, aptly named, AddressBook for Android. After you download this app, you’ll be prompted to download all of the additional plug-ins that you want – such as one to connect to Facebook and another to connect to Twitter or YouTube.

Once your contacts are imported from those social networks, they’re displayed in a nice looking contacts list. This is meant to replace the standard Android address book, and throughout you’ll find all sorts of other features incorporated into it, such as a button for an emergency number (which you can program) and a one-touch connection to look up local movie listings.

I really like this app because it’s clean, fast, and it just works as advertised. You can add-on the features you want, or just leave off the ones you don’t.

The one I am going to give a closer look at today is an old one: it received a great deal of attention back in 2007. It is still supported though and I have just recently discovered and fallen in love with it.

href="http://interclue.com/">Interclue is a fun addon for FireFox. Actually it gives so much info on the preview that sometimes it seems too much (luckily, plenty of its behavior can be controlled via the tool options).

How Interclue Works: The Basics

After you have it installed, hover over any link and notice the linked domain favicon pops up nearby. Just hover over the icon and you will be able to preview URL page contents before clicking:

Control this feature from the tool options:

Navigate to: Tools -> Interclue options -> Linkclue activation

You can set the time delay before a Linkclue icon appears, when the icon disappears (if you use it) and if it should fade away. You can also specify if you want the icon to appear for internal links or external only.

In the same dialog, you can also customize the size of the preview window.

What’s in a Preview?

The preview pop-up includes:

• The linked page text;
• The linked page thumbnail (upper-right corner);
• “Meta clues” that provide further info on the linked page.

The latter is actually pretty useful feature (but probably that’s what I call “too much”). The meta clues can include:

• Delicious saves and tags;
• The number of downloadable files on the target page;
• Page date, etc

Meta clues can be disabled using the [x] next to the feature, or in the Interclue options panel.

• -> Page summaries: to adjust the font of the page text in the preview pop-up;
• -> Meta clues: to set the additional information you want to be collected in the preview window;

Different Types of Links

Besides favicons (displayed for “normal” links), other types of icons may appear upon mouse-over in some cases – these icons can signal:

1. HTML anchors (or “named” anchors):

This will usually work for “Comments”, “Read more”, links from the blog home page, for example. The preview window will show exactly the part of the page where the link anchors to:

2. Redirected links

• Malware or phishing sites;

Navigate to: Tools -> Interclue options -> Hover Cues -> “Adjust Hoverclue settings for different types of links…”

Preview Window Additional Actions

The preview pop-up speeds up quite a few browsing tasks. By default, you are able to instantly:

• Preview the next/previous similar link in the same window (for example, for MakeUseOf home page, you can load the preview of each post one by one in the same dialog);
• Bookmark the link;
• Open the page in a new background tab;
• Email the preview window content;
• Copy the preview window content;
• Access your tools options.
