Recover Lost Data For Free With Pandora Recovery [Windows]

Last night I inadvertently deleted 17GB of data with a mis-press of Shift+Del, causing a classic “oh sh*t!!” moment. I’d chosen to “permanently delete” the folder, skipping the Recycle Bin and instantly freeing up some space on my drive.

This is great when you’re playing file janitor for a day, cutting, copying and inevitably deleting files and folders you no longer need. Unfortunately getting the data back isn’t quite as easy as a trip to the Recycle Bin. You’ll need some recovery software, something like Pandora Recovery. Breathe. Relax. Let’s recover some data.

A Few Things To Remember

When a file is deleted, Windows usually sends the item to the Recycle Bin where it is marked for deletion but still very much on your drive. Once you’ve emptied the Recycle Bin the file is seemingly lost. Shift+Del is simply a handy shortcut to skip the Bin and zap a file.

However, just because the file or folder has been deleted does not mean your data has been destroyed. When a file is “deleted”, Windows simply marks that section of the hard drive as free, writable space. Provided you’ve not filled up the drive a few times, it’s very likely you’ll be able to recover those files.

This does of course mean that old hard drives, memory cards, flash drives and any other rewritable storage medium is subject to the same rules. If you format and sell an old SD card there’s every chance the buyer could attempt a recovery and enjoy your holiday snaps too. Regardless of how likely it is that someone would do this, it’s still very much possible.

Install Pandora Recovery

Assuming you’ve just lost a couple of vital documents, you’ll probably want to protect the medium they were stored on. Don’t write to the drive, don’t move or copy items and ensure you have at least enough free space on a separate drive for the files you want to recover.

Recovering files to the same drive that you are recovering from is possibly going to end in tears as your files have now been marked as free space, meaning it’s possible that you’ll overwrite the same files you’re trying to cover and lose your data. Don’t do it – recover to another drive and then put your files back where they belong.

If you’re recovering from your system drive then it’s probably a good idea to not install Pandora in this location, in case you overwrite the data. If you’re reading this without the need for an immediate recovery then ask yourself if you’re better off installing the software before you genuinely need it. Otherwise, choose another partition or better still prepare a portable USB install on another PC. It is also possible to buy a ready-to-rock USB version of Pandora for around $20.

You can grab Pandora here, choose Download.com as a mirror and click the Direct Download Now link below the CNET Installer link. CNET Installer will attempt to install crapware on your PC (you have to agree, but it’s quite a confusing dialogue) in addition to the Ask.com toolbar you should probably refuse in the main installer.

Once Pandora is installed or available as a portable app you’re ready to recover.

The Recovery Process

Recovering data with Pandora is fairly simple, and the first thing you’ll see is a wizard that attempts to guide you through the process. Follow the wizard and after choosing a drive you’ll be asked whether you want to browse for deleted files, search or conduct a deep surface scan.

Browse is great if you know where the data went missing from, and probably returns the quickest results. If you’re after a particular file then searching either for a matching name or simply by extension like *.avi or *.jpg will yield results. If your drive has been formatted, has corrupted file tables, is a removable/flash storage medium or everything else has failed then a deep surface scan is your best option.

You can easily skip between the functions in their respective tabs, and the recovery process is identical for all three methods. Once you have located a file or folder you would like to recover simply right click and choose Recover to… from the menu.

A dialogue box will pop-up requesting a location to store recovered data, remember: if you’re recovering from an external hard drive – copy to your main drive. If you’re recovering from system drive – recover to a USB or external drive. Do not write to your source drive.

Depending on how much data is being recovered you may have to wait a while. Recovering 17GB of video took me about 45 minutes, whereas a small file (documents or images) takes seconds. Once you’re done you’ll hopefully see something resembling the screen below.

Conclusion

Remember, if you can’t find your data with a search or browse then a deep surface scan is highly recommended. I deleted a few files to test the program and not only did it find the images I purposefully deleted but a lot of old music, video and image files from before my last format.

If you’ve tried Pandora Recovery and are still having problems then all is not lost. Maybe you’ll have some joy with another recommended recovery program. There is also a detailed FAQ regarding Pandora here.

How To Recover Lost Files In Dropbox

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox01.png" alt="recover lost files" /> href="http://www.dropbox.com">Dropbox is an online file storing, sync, and backup solution with features that make its competition look pale in comparison. The most ingenious thing about Dropbox is that you don’t have to remember to sync your files or make a backup. As long as you ‘drop’ your files into the Dropbox folder, they are automatically synced and hence backed up to the Dropbox server, provided you have an active Internet connection.

But what happens if you accidentally delete a file? Will it be gone forever once the changes are synced to Dropbox? Yes, the file will disappear from your Dropbox folder. However, it won’t be entirely gone just yet. So is there a way to recover lost files from Dropbox after it was deleted? This being the super smart Dropbox, there certainly is!

What Dropbox does behind the scenes is to keep a record of every saved change in your Dropbox folder for 30 days. This means that not only can you restore files that were removed from your Dropbox folder during the past 30 days, you can also go back to previous versions of documents. This recover and restore feature makes Dropbox a life saver and in this article I will show you how to use it.

Recovering Files Online

The way it works is straightforward. When you are logged into Dropbox online, you will notice a ‘Show deleted files‘ button in every folder.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox02.png" alt="recover lost files" />

Clicking this button will reveal all files that were deleted during the past 30 days. When you hover over a file with the mouse cursor, you will see a little arrow in the far right. By clicking the arrow of a deleted file, you can choose to undelete, permanently delete, or view previous versions of the file.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox03.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

When you hover over any other file and click the arrow, you can also access a list of previous versions, through which you can preview and restore any of the backed up versions.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox04.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

Recovering Files From Dropbox Installation On Windows

Likewise, you can open the above list of previous file versions via the Dropbox folder on your computer. The respective application is available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Mobile.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox05.png" alt="dropbox recover deleted files" />

Generally, the restore feature only works if the files you’re working on were uploaded to the Dropbox server. For example if you move a file to your Dropbox folder and work on it while you’re offline, you will neither be able to restore the file if you delete it, nor will you be able to go back to a previous version. The reason is that the original file and/or its intermediate versions were never uploaded to the Dropbox server. Once a file hits the server however, a second copy of this file version will be available for 30 days after the initial file was first changed.

This said, there is another way to restore files from your computer in case the above method fails. Dropbox also keeps a hidden cache of files in a backup storage within the Dropbox settings. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 open a new Windows Explorer window or folder. Copy and paste the following line to the location bar at the top of the folder and press Enter:

%HOMEPATH%\Dropbox\.dropbox.cache

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RestoreDropbox06.png" alt="recover lost files" />

This will open your Dropbox cache within the Application Data folder. To restore a file, drag it out of this cache folder into another folder or onto your desktop.

If you think 30 days are not enough, you should consider upgrading to Dropbox Pro and get the title="Dropbox Pack-Rat add-on" href="https://www.dropbox.com/help/113">Pack-Rat add-on, which will save a history of your files forever.

mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format

have bought one mp3/mp4 player from china. It had 2 GB memory and it had new version of firmware. Due to some error in mp3 player, I format it. Then when I checked memory space, I found that it has only 109 MB. I don’t know why mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format. Anyone else having the same problem. Please help me.
    Thank you.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Hey you are using fake mp3/mp4 player and that’s why you are getting such type of problem. You must check before buying whether it is working properly or not. Most of the people have such type of problem, who have take china made electronic device. If your mp3/mp4 player has warranty then you have toreplace it with new one to get rid out of this problem.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Have you tried to format it using Command prompt. If not then use following steps to do this.
1.First connect your mp3/mp4 player to computer.
    2.Now open Command prompt.
3.Now type “format _ ” (Instead of “_” use drive letter of your mp3/mp4 player )
    That’s it.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
You have to use TestDisk utility to fix this problem. TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
I able to fix this problem by using SD Formatter 2.0. I think you also use it to get rid out of this problem. This software formats all SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards using a formatting program that complies with official SD memory card requirements. SD formatting provides quick and easy access to your SD memory card. SD or SDHC memory card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with official SD memory card requirements and optimum performance may not be experienced.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
I also had the same problem. Then as per your answer I used TestDisk utility to fix this problem and it really works for me. But one problem is there. I able to recover only 1gb from it. This means that now my mp3/mp4 player shows only 1gb free space instead of 2gb. Can anyone tell me how do I get back to 2gb. Is there any kind of software available.

Re: mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format
Hey I also have the same model and same problem. I also format my mp3 player and then it shows only 178mb free space. I tried various method to fix this problem, but nothing happened. Then after frustrating I replace my mp3/mp4 player with new one and I able to fix this problem. I think you also replace your mp3/mp4 player with new one to get rid out of this problem.

Lost or Forgot Computer Password? Reset Windows XP password!

Lost or Forgot Computer Password? Reset Windows XP password!

If you have lost or forgotten your password for logging in to a computer running the Windows XP operating system, there are a few different options:

If you created a Windows XP password reset disk for Windows XP, you can use that disk to reset Windows XP password on your account. For more information on how to create and use password reset disks go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to create and use a password reset disk for a computer that is not a domain member in Windows XP
How to create and use a password reset disk for a computer in a domain in Windows XP

If you don’t have a Windows XP password reset disk, the other option is to log on as the Administrator (or to have the person who is the machine’s Administrator log on) and change the Windows XP password for your user account. For information on how to do this go to the following Mircosoft article:

If you don’t know the Administrator password, and don’t have a Windows XP password reset disk, then you will not be able to log on to Windows XP, and will need to reinstall the operating system and recreate any user accounts.

There are some programs available on the web which claim to be able to reset the Windows XP password(s) without access to an Administrator account, but these are not Microsoft programs, and are not recommended. If you do wish to try one of these programs (at your own risk), a web search should turn up a number of options.

    Other tips:

First, do you have the administrator password? Login as an admin and change the password of your user ID NEW: If you are an Administrator user, and are logged into Windows right now because your PC is setup to log you in automatically, but have forgotten your password in fact, and would now like to change it. well, Windows requires you to know the old one. However, there is a brute force way to reset the Administrator password. Open a Command prompt (START—> RUN—> then type “cmd” without the double quotes) and then type the following command:

    net user username newpassword

Remember, if the username has spaces in it, then enclose it in double quotes, e.g.,

    net user “Jackson” pulpypass

This would change Samuel Jackson’s password to pulpypass provided Samuel Jackson was an Administrator user.

Don’t have admin access? Well, you can get it if you wish by downloading a cool utility from Thomas Mathiesen to recover Windows password if you have forgotten it. Or, you could just download this program to reset Windows XP / 2000 / NT security if the Administrator password, secure boot password, or the key disk is lost. NTAccess can replace the administrator password of a Windows XP, Windows NT or Windows 2000 system by rebooting the computer with a special set of boot disks or CD-ROM (XP only). This is useful if you forgot the administrator password and cannot access the Windows XP/2000/NT system. Petter N Hagen has put together an Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, which is basically a single floppy or CD containing everything you need to edit the passwords on most Windows systems.

Top 5 Tools That Will Help You Locate Your Lost Cell Phone

locate my lost cell phoneIt happens to all of us. You set your phone down to go do something and later on you can’t remember where you left it. Or maybe it fell out of your pocket somewhere. Whatever the case may be, a lost cell phone can give you a headache in a hurry.

After all, we’re dependent on these devices. What if it was stolen? You don’t want your private information in the wrong hands, especially since these new phones are capable of making purchases online.

In this article, I am going to cover a few of the tools you can use to locate your lost or stolen cell phone. So the next time you lose your phone, hopefully it won’t take all day to find it.

[Note]: Finding your cell phone is much easier if you have the ringer turned on or at least have it on vibrate. Finding a phone on silent can be done (if you have GPS), but it is by far the trickiest of all recoveries.

    WhereisMyCellPhone

For a lot of you, this may be the only tool you need. If you don’t have a house phone (less and less people do every day), you can go to WhereisMyCellPhone and dial your number for free. We’ve covered this app in our directory before. Simply type in your number, click Find It!, and let it ring until your phone is found. There is no registration required to use this app.   This app is US-only.

    BlueRetriever

If you think you’ve left your phone in a public place, you can try this directory app. BlueRetriever is pretty cool in that it allows you to create a wallpaper for your phone that has a site URL and an ID number on it.

When someone finds your phone, they can go to the website, type in the ID number, and they will be able to find out who the phone belongs to. You can even offer them a reward, which you set yourself, of up to $100 in gift cards (Amazon, Starbucks, Target) or donations with Kiva.

Site registration is free and BlueRetriever supports the following devices:

    • iPhone Original/3G/3GS.
    • iPod Touch.
    • Blackberry: Curve, Storm, Bold, Pearl.
    • Palm Pre.
    • Google G1.

[Note]: If your phone is not on the list, feel free to try the service anyway. You may however need to crop the image to fit on your phone’s screen.

    Lookout

    locate my lost cell phone

This app supports Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile phones. Lookout provides security in the form of virus and malware protection, data backup of your contacts and photos, and device location.

The site says that if you can’t find your phone you can make it “scream” (not quite sure what that means) or wipe it out.

    F-Secure Anti-Theft

    locate my lost cell phone

If you’re really worried about your data being stolen, you can look into F-Secure Anti-Theft (directory). Supported by Symbian OS, Windows Mobile, and Android, this application provides the ability to track your lost phone, remotely lock it, and even remotely wipe out all the data.

If your phone is stolen, you can text message a key to your phone to find its geo-location. Send the phone different keys to perform the activities mentioned above.

We’ve covered similar software in WaveSecure and BuddyWay.

    iTag [Android]

If you own an Android phone, you need an app like iTag. Once installed this app will allow you to view your cell phone’s location, make it ring from the website even if it is set to silent or vibrate, lock the keys, back up your contacts, delete the information on the phone, and more. There’s not much this app can’t do in the way of finding your cell phone.

    Conclusion

Did you find your lost cell phone? I hope you did.
