BJCP stands for Beer Judge Certification Program. The BJCP’s goal is to train beer experts, and their Android app is a very informative beer index which includes everything you ever wanted to know about beer styles, flavors, aromas, ingredients, etc.

If you’ve always wanted to know the difference between a brown porter and a robust porter, or to get to know some classic examples for amber hybrid beer, you’re going to love BJCP’s app. There are no frills here, just information, and lots of it.

The app includes ads, but if you happen to be a BJCP member, you can remove them by entering your BJCP number.

Hoptopia is a great source for craft beer reviews, which you can browse by name, beer style and brewery. The beers are reviewed by real people, and each is given an overall score (out of 100). You can also read an in-depth review about each beer, and see what price you should expect it to go for.

After reading about a beer, you can add it to your favorites, which you can access from the “More” tab. This way, you can get to know lots of new beers by browsing, and create your own collections of interesting beers you want to try. The beer database is not huge, but definitely comprehensive, and will provide an interesting read for any beer lover.

BeerDiary is a very simple app, which I nonetheless find extremely useful and fun to use. If you often feel the urge to record your drinking habits or to list the different beers you drink so as to never forget them again, you’re going to love BeerDiary.

With BeerDiary, you can add all your favorite beers, including the brewer’s name and location, a description and tag. You can then view your beer list at any time, and tap the beer-glass icon to signify that you’ve now drunk that beer. What you get is a list with all the beers you’ve drunk, and the exact times and days you’ve done so. You can browse your beers by name, brewer or tag.

The app doesn’t do any more than this at the moment, but a simple app is sometimes all you need for a simple task.

With a name like that, where can an app go wrong? Beer, or by its full name, Beer – List, Ratings & Reviews, is for those who are looking for a beer diary with more capabilities than BeerDiary, and are also interested in reading other people’s opinions.

For each beer you add to your list, you can input a name, style, barcode, photo, ratings, and much, much more. You can also share each beer you add via Twitter, Facebook or email. For your own records, you can view stats, export to CSV, backup and restore, and more. You can search through all your beers, and also search through beers other people reviewed, read their opinions and comment.

If you’ve ever brewed beer by yourself, you’ve probably done some calculations. Depending on the process you’re using and on your level, there are all kinds of parameters you need to take into considerations when brewing beer.

Brewzor calculator is a free app aimed at both home brewers and professional brewers, and provides an impressive number of brewing calculators, some of which I’ve never even heard of before. You can set up the app to use your exact measurements, and also configure what kind of equipment you’re using. BrewR is another app aimed at brewers, and will especially appeal to home brewers. You can add your own recipes, complete with ingredients (which you can choose from the vast ingredient database), recipe notes and specific batch notes. It also includes several timers to use while brewing, such as a boil time countdown and hopping time alerts.

The ingredients in the database are editable, so you can pretty much add any ingredient you can dream of. You can also add your own notes to each ingredient. When you have a list of recipes, you can filter them and sort them in various ways, and even share them with friends through all the regular social channels.

The app will save your stats for you, complete with time and place, and will tally up the costs for the night, until you start it over. You can view your activities on a map and automatically share your drinking ventures on Twitter and Facebook.

Some people are screaming praise, and others are yelling mean nasty things about the poor iPhone. I fall on the praise side. I had a terrible experience actually getting the phone, since my carrier took my pre-order, and then decided to try to make me wait until the end of October to get the phone. I smoothed that over and got myself a 4S on day one thankfully.

    I could not be happier with the phone. I am coming from a 3GS so the improvements are leaps and bounds for me. I could see how someone coming from an iPhone 4 might not see the changes as profoundly as I do, but nonetheless, the changes are there, and they are noticeable. Either way, today I’m going to look at the reasons I love my 4S, and why it is the best phone I have ever owned.

    Siri

    This one is obvious, because Siri is the main feature touted on the new iPhone, but it truly is something special. I realize that other phones have incorporated voice control before, heck, even the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone itself had voice control in previous models, but none works as smoothly and easily as Siri.

    Just hold the home button for a couple of seconds or simply put the phone to your ear as if you are making a call. This will wake your personal assistant from her slumber (I know it is an “it”, but it has a girl’s voice, so I call it a she). Siri is incredibly accurate, 99 percent of the time it knows what you want, and executes it post-haste.

    Most other voice control applications are just that – href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/voice-recognition/">separate applications. Siri is so well integrated into the phone that it puts other voice control services to shame.

    Siri is another example of Apple being Apple. They do not always do it first, but in most cases, they do it best.

    Speed

    The iPhone 4S promised speed improvements in a couple of areas, and so far it has delivered on both. It promises an obscenely fast processor, and in that regard, it is ridiculous. As I said previously, I was coming from an iPhone 3GS, so the dual core A5 is much faster. The phone runs snappier than any phone I have owned. I have some friends that came into the 4S from a 4, and they said there was a serious difference, although not as earth shattering as it is from a 3GS.

    Apple also promised improved data speeds on iPhone 4S, and while this difference is not nearly as noticeable as the improvement in the processor, it is there. While running a speed test, my download speed was about 1.5MB faster than my previous iPhone.  This is not a huge change, but faster is always better than slower.

    Camera

    I could not be more impressed by the iPhone 4S camera. When Apple talked about the improvements on the camera front, they were not just blowing smoke. It is really an exceptional improvement. The pictures look great, and the video quality is fantastic. As with anything iPhone, the camera is easy to use.

    Even in low light situations, the pictures look clean and bright.

    With the addition of the camera button on the lock screen in iOS 5 and the improvements in the processor, it is incredibly quick to take a picture. Now, you will not have to miss the photo op because it took too long to get the camera up and running.

    It is the best camera on an Apple phone yet. In terms of cell phone cameras it blows most out of the water, but there are phones out there with better cameras. Still, eight Megapixels is very solid. The 4S actually outputs the same resolution as my point and shoot digital camera. It very well could be your only camera.

    The Look

    I am actually happy they did not change the look of the phone for this generation. I am very fond of the design of the iPhone 4, and I am glad they stuck with it. I would have enjoyed a bigger screen, but I can certainly live without it.

    I was hoping they would not make the phone any thinner. I like a little bit of meat on my cell phone, and based on some of those prototypes people were making, I was not happy. Thankfully, Apple stuck with the clean look and size of the iPhone 4 for at least another year.

    iOS 5

    I know this is available on most iPhones, but Apple really knocked it out of the park with this OS so I felt I needed to mention it. The improvements are everywhere you look in the OS. Many of the reasons I used to jailbreak my phone are no longer relevant, and I am even considering leaving my new 4S clean and jailbreak-free (we will see how long that lasts, since I have never had an unjailbroken iPhone).

    Some of my favorite features of the new OS are custom vibrations, text shortcuts, find my friends, and iCloud. Overall, there is so much cool stuff in iOS 5 that it could make an entire article in itself. A great new OS nicely complements a great new phone.

    I will happily admit that I am something of an href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/iphone/">iPhone fan boy. It was unlikely there was anything Apple could have done with the new phone that would have upset me. In the end, it has everything I expect from my iPhone, and even though the improvements are more incremental than many people would have liked, I am completely happy with it.

    The Tech

However, whenever you post a status update that is something like “my laptop’s hard drive has opened a portal to Hell and the cat is stuck inside my desktop’s fan”, the Tech is on the ready.

    Immediately, he will do everything within his ability to fix it. Your Facebook wall will transform into a troubleshooting session that is better than any professional service! Also, their advice will actually work… sometimes. />

    The RE:Fwd Master

    Remember a little thing called email? That was to be before Facebook and when Orwell’s Newspeak became mainstream. But all jokes aside, you know of chain emails, right?

    FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO 30 FRIENDS BY 7 PM TONIGHT AND A MAGICAL WHALE WILL BE ON YOUR PORCH TOMORROW MORNING!!!

    These are the types of bizarre messages that are sometimes sent out via friends and on other occasions via the workplace. However, this monstrosity has been revived on Facebook through the RE:Fwd Master. The RE:Fwd Master tends to post chain-eque status updates on their status updates, and I utterly hate it.

    By the way, if you post a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube">YouTube video of yourself in the comments saying “RE:Fwd Master” five times fast, I’ll let you be my friend on Facebook. True story.

    The Disgruntled Citizen

    Zuckerberg created Facebook, and honestly, Zuckerberg reserves the right to title="Facebook Timeline Starts Rolling Out To User Profiles Today [News]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebook-timeline-starts-rolling-user-profiles-today-news/">change it however he wants (much like a certain George Lucas). However, whenever Facebook makes a change, 99% of the posts on my feed become devoted to “how horrible” the new changes are. The remaining 1% are about cats being stuck in desktop fans.

    It seems as though this stereotype compares itself a disgruntled citizen frustrated with the new laws that his dictator has instated. Well, truth be told, the Disgruntled Citizen hasn’t done much for Zuckerberg (save for being a demographic that builds ad revenue), but in my opinion, Zuckerberg sure has done a lot for the Disgruntled Citizen.

    The Personal Cheerleader

    The Personal Cheerleader is not a bad Facebook stereotype. As a matter of fact, I feel that this is the stereotype that everyone loves. These are the people who take time out of their day to sit down, look at what you have posted, and encourage you in some form or fashion. I love the Personal Cheerleaders, and the world needs more of them.

    Alternatively, there is the Personal Stalker. These types do exactly what the Personal Cheerleader does except with a bit of a creepy twist. Their motives may not be as pure as the Personal Cheerleaders’, and chances are that they just want to have you over for dinner, or in extreme cases, have you for dinner. (F-s-s-s-s….)

    The Insensitive Commenter

    Occasionally, we will post tragic news on our Facebook page about a death in the family or a lost opportunity. These are all very terrible, and there is nothing funny about that at all. However, there are some people who entirely disregard the content of your Facebook status update and utilize the comment section as their own personal way to contact you. Say, for instance, that you have updated your status to something about your cat dying in a tragic fan accident. This will typically be the response of the Insensitive Commenter:

    HEY. I WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU COULD PAY ME BACK FOR THAT PIZZA I BOUGHT YOU LAST FRIDAY. LOL.

    People, they exist. You know that they exist. As a matter of fact, you may be one of them. It’s a shame, but we’ve all experienced them.

    The Relationship Monitor

    I’ve discussed this before somewhere out on the seas of the Internet, but you will notice that every single time someone updates their relationship status to single (or in some cases, paired up) there will always be that one individual who acts absolutely shocked and surprised – “WHAT?!” or “WHY DID Y’ALL BREAK UP?!” seem to be common responses. Here we have the Relationship Monitor, one of my least favorites.

    One variation of the Relationship Monitor would be the fellow who sympathizes with the poor girl who fell victim to such a break-up. He will write things such as, “I’M SO SORRY!” and “IF YOU EVER NEED TO TALK, JUST CALL ME, OKAY?”

    Well, we all know his ulterior motives. He wants the girl for himself! If it were up to me, I would say that everyone should just leave the person alone. On the other hand, maybe folks shouldn’t publicize their break-up on Facebook, either.

    FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO 30 FRIENDS BY 7 PM TONIGHT AND A MAGICAL WHALE WILL BE ON YOUR PORCH TOMORROW MORNING!!!

    These are the types of bizarre messages that are sometimes sent out via friends and on other occasions via the workplace. However, this monstrosity has been revived on Facebook through the RE:Fwd Master. The RE:Fwd Master tends to post chain-eque status updates on their status updates, and I utterly hate it.

    By the way, if you post a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube">YouTube video of yourself in the comments saying “RE:Fwd Master” five times fast, I’ll let you be my friend on Facebook. True story.

    The Disgruntled Citizen

    Zuckerberg created Facebook, and honestly, Zuckerberg reserves the right to title="Facebook Timeline Starts Rolling Out To User Profiles Today [News]" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebook-timeline-starts-rolling-user-profiles-today-news/">change it however he wants (much like a certain George Lucas). However, whenever Facebook makes a change, 99% of the posts on my feed become devoted to “how horrible” the new changes are. The remaining 1% are about cats being stuck in desktop fans.

    It seems as though this stereotype compares itself a disgruntled citizen frustrated with the new laws that his dictator has instated. Well, truth be told, the Disgruntled Citizen hasn’t done much for Zuckerberg (save for being a demographic that builds ad revenue), but in my opinion, Zuckerberg sure has done a lot for the Disgruntled Citizen.

    The Personal Cheerleader

    The Personal Cheerleader is not a bad Facebook stereotype. As a matter of fact, I feel that this is the stereotype that everyone loves. These are the people who take time out of their day to sit down, look at what you have posted, and encourage you in some form or fashion. I love the Personal Cheerleaders, and the world needs more of them.

    Alternatively, there is the Personal Stalker. These types do exactly what the Personal Cheerleader does except with a bit of a creepy twist. Their motives may not be as pure as the Personal Cheerleaders’, and chances are that they just want to have you over for dinner, or in extreme cases, have you for dinner. (F-s-s-s-s….)

    The Insensitive Commenter

    Occasionally, we will post tragic news on our Facebook page about a death in the family or a lost opportunity. These are all very terrible, and there is nothing funny about that at all. However, there are some people who entirely disregard the content of your Facebook status update and utilize the comment section as their own personal way to contact you. Say, for instance, that you have updated your status to something about your cat dying in a tragic fan accident. This will typically be the response of the Insensitive Commenter:

    HEY. I WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU COULD PAY ME BACK FOR THAT PIZZA I BOUGHT YOU LAST FRIDAY. LOL.

    People, they exist. You know that they exist. As a matter of fact, you may be one of them. It’s a shame, but we’ve all experienced them.

    The Relationship Monitor

    I’ve discussed this before somewhere out on the seas of the Internet, but you will notice that every single time someone updates their relationship status to single (or in some cases, paired up) there will always be that one individual who acts absolutely shocked and surprised – “WHAT?!” or “WHY DID Y’ALL BREAK UP?!” seem to be common responses. Here we have the Relationship Monitor, one of my least favorites.

    One variation of the Relationship Monitor would be the fellow who sympathizes with the poor girl who fell victim to such a break-up. He will write things such as, “I’M SO SORRY!” and “IF YOU EVER NEED TO TALK, JUST CALL ME, OKAY?”

    Well, we all know his ulterior motives. He wants the girl for himself! If it were up to me, I would say that everyone should just leave the person alone. On the other hand, maybe folks shouldn’t publicize their break-up on Facebook, either.

    But what can I do with all of my check-in data? I’d love to be able to not only see all of the places I’ve checked into, but mark certain ones as my favorites and then use that information to discover even more great venues. Is that too much to ask? I don’t think so, and neither does Scoville.

Thanks to software, you have a full-featured graphing calculator that’s designed to work just like a hand-held calculator.

    With a simple program from Microsoft named href="http://www.microsoft.com/education/products/student/math/default.aspx#overview">Microsoft Mathematics 4.0, you have the full power of a graphing calculator – and more – right at your computer.

    Let’s go over some of the neat features this program provides and how it can help with homework or other math functions.

    When you launch the program you have an interface that is very similar to any other graphing calculator. You can enter your numbers and calculations directly into the program by either pressing the buttons with your mouse or just typing it in.

    You can also draw your calculations and Mathematics will try to decipher your drawing into an equation. This is helpful if you receive an problem but don’t know exactly how to enter it into the program. It works fairly well, but does have some difficulty decoding some more complicated equations.

    Of course the core of a graphic calculating program is the graphs it can make. Entering the equations into the “equation” portion of the program allows you to graph multiple lines on the same chart.

    Once you get used to the program, you can actually get very fancy with your graphs. Entering the right commands in the software will translate to a graph on the worksheet:

    Another interesting portion of the program is the equation solver. Once you type in an equation it will help you step through to solve it for one of the variables you have listed. After it is solved, you can then graph it in 2d or 3d to help visualize the equation and learn what it actually does.

    The Equation Library built into the program also gets you started on some interesting ways you can enter data into the program.

    The final feature I’d like to go over is the Triangle Solver. The solver takes all of the legwork out of figuring out the remaining angles or length of a triangle and will also let you know exactly what type of triangle it is.

    On a personal note, when I was going through high school I relied heavily on a graphing calculator to do all of my work for me. Although I was very good at translating problems into a format the calculator can read, I ignored the underlying concepts which lead me to receive good grades, at least for the mean time. Once I went to college and was no longer able to use a calculator I had a very tough time adjusting. Please make sure to use this program responsibly and actually learn the underlying principles.
