Right from the outset, the Tap Tap series was seeing huge success on the device. It was the most popular application for months, and everyone was having a blast tapping his or her screen along to the beat. Even Rock Band and Guitar Hero have tried their luck on the iPhone, and found a decent level of success. The problem with these games is that they are all essentially the same. Notes fall from the top of the screen and you try to tap them at the right time. They may have different skins but in the end, it is all the same.

Smule, the company behind I Am T Pain, hopes to give rhythm games a new feel on the iPhone with a game called href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magic-guitar/id403024450?mt=8">Magic Guitar. This game still involves tapping the screen to play notes, but it presents it differently, and it forces you to hold the phone similar to the way you would hold the neck of a guitar. It is a fresh way to play with a genre that is played out. The music game boom was huge, and the fall was even more massive. The question is; can a fresh take bring the genre back to prominence?

Mechanics

The first thing that is important with this game is the way you hold your iPhone. You need to hold it in your hand as if you were holding the neck of a guitar and look down at the device. This gives you a very different feel than most music games on the app store. This also makes playing the game feel more authentic.

The notes will scroll from the side of the screen, and you need to press the play area to play the note. You have to press close to the right area in order for the note to sound right. It will still register if you play the wrong spot, but it will just sound a little off. This adds to the authentic guitar feel. Notes will appear longer and shorter depending on how long you need to hold them. Obviously, a longer note will require you to keep your fingers pressed down longer, while a shorter note will require more of a quick tap.

In addition to the length of notes, you will also encounter notes that require you to slide your finger up and down the screen, creating bend. You can also shake your iPhone to create vibrato.

Each song allows you to choose a type of guitar. You can play electric, acoustic, lead or choose the default for that particular song. You can also increase and decrease the speed of the notes, making the song easier or more difficult, depending on your skill level.

Songs

The game comes with five songs for free, and more can be purchased for various amounts of game currency called Shreds. You can also earn more shreds by completing offers within the application.

The free songs are public domain stuff such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and The Star Spangled Banner. The songs available for purchase are much more extensive and include artists such as The Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Tom Petty and many others. The selection is truly impressive.

Challenges

The game includes many challenges to keep things fun and fresh. As you level up, you will unlock new challenges that make you do things like get a certain amount of points overall, or earn a certain rating on a particular song.

There are also achievements to earn. These give you even more goals to shoot for while shredding away on your iPhone.

Social Integration

Guitar Magic features some great leaderboard and social features. First, you can head to the World tab from the main menu and listen to performances from other players from around the world. After hanging out in the globe for a little, I must say, some people are terrible at this game!

You can also connect the game with Facebook and compare stats and scores with your real life friends. You can share your individual performances on Facebook and Twitter right after you finish a song. This is a very cool rhythm game. It takes the tried and true method of making a music game and adds some serious new twists. The tool can come in handy in a number of situations. You may use it to conceal extracurricular tasks at school, hide classified documents when a nosy colleague comes in to disturb, or keep generally keep your browsing habits private.

While you can use the [WINDOWS] + [D] keyboard shortcut to minimize everything and reveal only the desktop, Magic Boss Key actually hides only selected items. With the click of a single hot key, your choice of open windows disappears, for example running applications, browser windows, or open folders. At the same time, you can also hide desktop icons, the taskbar, and mute the sound.

The program remains visible in the tray, so it is recommended that you edit your system tray to hide this item.

Since some windows, although hidden, might still sit in the system tray, for example Magic Boss Key itself, or are pinned to the taskbar, you might want to hide the taskbar altogether. Click the > Options button and personalize the settings. Within the options window you can also pick your favorite hot key. You can choose between the [F12] button or the [Windows] button + left / right mouse button. Clicking the hot key again, will restore the hidden windows.

It could be a little better if hiding the tray icon of the program itself would work and if it was possible to launch the program with some windows preset to be hidden, for example specific applications like the browser or an instant messenger. Overall, however, it simply works.

No registration is required: just upload a file and start reading. Magic Scroll is not only a great way to read EPUB books; it’s a great way to share them. Upload a book and you’ll be given a permanent URL for the book, which you can easily share with your friends.

We’ve profiled similar applications in the past. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/bookworm-personal-ebook-library/">BookWorm is a great personal online library, for example. But it’s hard to match the simplicity and elegance of MagicScroll’s ePub reader, an example of HTML5 at its best. It’s as good as the eBook reader in class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-beautiful-free-ebooks-googles-shop/">Google’s online book store, but you can upload any book you want. Sure, it doesn’t work with DRM-protected books, but if you’re looking for an elegant way to read books online you’re not going to find a better one. Heck, I can’t even think of a desktop eBook reader this nice.

Uploading Books

Head over to class="vt-p" href="http://www.magicscroll.net">MagicScroll to get started. Here you’ll find a simple box from which you can upload EPUB files:

You don’t need to register to upload a file; you can simply upload it. If you don’t have any EPUBs you feel like uploading you can try reading a provided sample book to see how you like the feel of the app. If you want to find some free EPUBs, I highly recommend trying out class="vt-p" href="http://www.gutenberg.org">Project Gutenburg.

Once you upload a book you’ll receive a permanent URL for your book. Be sure to save this URL somewhere if you want to read your book on various devices.

Reading Books

Once you’ve uploaded a book you can start reading. The site will process the book for quick reading, then you’ll see its cover. Your book won’t take up the entire window by default:

Use the arrows keys to turn the page. Simple, right? You can also pull out the table of contents to jump to a particular chapter:

Don’t want to bother with the arrow keys? There’s a magic scrolling function built-in, which makes reading effortless. Click the “Play” button in the bottom-right corner to active this. Text at the top will slowly be replaced with text from the next page, and this transition will work its way down. It’s oddly intuitive, and you can adjust the speed to your preference.

Myself, I prefer the good old arrow keys, but this is a really nice option to have. You can disable this feature, and change the look for your eBooks, in the settings menu:

Shortcut Syncing

There being no user account for this service, you cannot sync your books across multiple devices natively. If you use class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/xmarks-syncs-bookmarks-passwords-major-browsers/">Xmarks or a similar service, however, syncing is as easy as bookmarking the books you’re reading. If you don’t want to mess around with bookmark syncing, you could also try a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/url-shortener/">URL shortener. This will at least make your URLs a bit less cumbersome.

Web Store

Do you like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-chrome-8-introducing-chrome-web-store/">Chrome’s new web store? Why not class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ghgnmgfdoiplfmhgghbmlphanpfmjble">install Magic Scroll as a Chrome App? It’s free and gives you an attractive bookmark.

Don’t like Chrome’s new web store? Complain about it in the comments. That ought to show Google it’s stupid to offer such a thing.

This is a web app done right. Not only is it just as (if not more) functional than its desktop rivals; it’s really easy to get started with. I’ll be using this to do some at-work reading for sure. I’m looking forward to future versions, because having a library and bookmarks in the cloud would be awesome.

Everyone understands selling cookies, or popcorn, or books, or candy to raise money.  You sell a box of cookies for Ten Dollars and your organization gets to keep Five Dollars for your cause.  You have to get the order.  Take the money.  Get the products.  Deliver the products.  You walked miles, or stood for hours, or physically humiliate your co-workers to get the orders.  It was all hard and not terribly efficient.

Now, imagine this…you find a digital product…maybe a piece of software, maybe an eBook, maybe something else.  Perhaps they already have program for fundraising, or perhaps you negotiate one (it is certainly easier if they already have a program).  They establish a way for you to get a direct, online link to a Shopping Cart that is specifically established for you (this may be a unique page, or it may just a program, coupon or reference number on their standard order page).  You let your potential buyers know about the link/product.  They go and buy the product using credit cards, perhaps Paypal.  The owner of the digital product supplies it directly to the buyer.  You get the money.

So how do you let your potential buyers know.  Here are just a few ways:

1)       Put a link and description on your organization’s  website or in their electronic or physical newsletter;

2)      Hand out cards or flyers, or just leave them lying around, with a brief story and a link;

3)      Here is the best-viral email; you send a personal email with a compelling description of the cause you are raising money for and ask people to go to a link a buy the product for your cause.  Tell them how much they will enjoy the product.  Now…here is the best part…send this email to ten of your friends…ask them to copy the main body, add their personal endorsement and send it to ten of their friends.  And repeat.  Sure, at some point the chain will run out…but look at the basic math…suppose 8 of your friends do what you asked…and then for each of them 4 of their friends…and for each of their friends 2 of their friends…and then for one more friend does it.  If you could make $10 per product (a minimum that you should expect here), you just made your organization over $10,000…and you never left the house, never handled money, never handled product.  LIFE IS GOOD!  (And if you want to make this better, just imagine that instead of just you starting this, imagine that your committee of 10 people each started this the same way…you just made $100,000).

There are literally hundreds of other ways to use digital download products for your fundraisers.  The common thread is this…it is easy, it is efficient, and it is effective.

Here is how to get started and what to look for in using digital download products for online fundraising:

1)      Find a digital product that will be interesting to the audience your organization touches.  Selling gambling software to a religious organization may not be a great idea (broadly).  If you are dealing with Moms, look for cookbooks, childcare books, and child protection tools.  Make sure your offering relates to your audience.

2)      Make sure your organization gets a fair return on the sale.  If you are not getting 50% of the Suggested Retail Value, walk away.  If you are not getting at least $10.00 per sale, walk away.

3)      Ensure that the product supplier can accept all reasonable forms of payment online.  At a minimum,  the supplier must accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, JCB and PayPal.  Accepting online checks is a nice bonus.

4)      First use suppliers who have established online fundraising programs already established and who can provide tools like email templates, web pages, advertisement suggestions.  You should not have to do all the work yourself.

5)      Make sure you receive funds received at least twice a month and that there is no specific limit on how long the fundraising program can be continued.  At the same time, make sure that you can “pull” the program whenever you want.

6)      You be the boss.  This is your program, make sure it works for you and your organization.

That’s it.  That’s all there is to it.  It isn’t hard.  It isn’t internet mumbo-jumbo.  It is real.  It works.  Try it.  Make it work for your organization today.
