What Do You Think Of Windows 8′s Metro UI? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we were interested in your tweeting habits, and asked you how often you share on Twitter. We wanted to get an idea of how frequently people tweet, and found out the surprising fact that more than %40 of you don’t tweet at all.

Out of the 145 readers who voted, 19% don’t even have a Twitter account, 23% have an account but never tweet, 23% tweet 1-5 times per week, 19% tweet 1-5 times per day, 7% tweet 6-10 times per day, 5.5% tweet 11-20 times per day, and 3.5% tweet more than 2- times daily.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

While not a whole lot of readers voted, it was still surprising to find out that so many of you are not big on tweeting, with a staggering 65% who tweet 5 times a week or less. In a world so consumed by Twitter and hashtags, it’s interesting to see such results.

poll

This week’s poll question is: What Do You Think Of Windows 8′s Metro UI?

Microsoft Metro UI is not entirely new, with early glimpses of dating back to earlier versions of Windows Media Center and Zune, but with Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8, Microsoft made sure we all heard of and knew what Metro UI is. Metro is a design language which is based on certain principles such as specific fonts, use of tiles and text for navigation, and more, and by utilizing in in Windows 8, Microsoft is trying to go in a completely different direction. This UI has gotten mixed reviews (although more good than bad), with some people thinking it’s the best thing since Windows added a Start button, and others hating the thought of having that as their main operating system. Where do you stand?

What is it about Metro UI that you like or don’t like? Do you think it’s good on some products but not on others? If so, which? We’re waiting for your comments.

How Often Do You Share On Twitter? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we asked you whether or not you use recommendation apps to find good places to eat. Apparently, this is not a subject readers think of a lot, as only 78 of you voted. But this makes the results all the more interesting!

Out of 78 readers who voted, 45% don’t use recommendation apps at all (!), 24% use them all the time and find them useful, 23% use them sometimes, 6% used to use recommendation apps but don’t trust them anymore, and 1% keep trying to use them, but are usually disappointed.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

While not many people voted, it’s still surprising to see that more than half of the voters don’t use these apps, and most of the voters don’t think they’re any good. I guess the market is ready for something different in this niche!

image

This week’s poll question is: How Often Do You Share On Twitter?

Twitter is a staggeringly large social network, and as such, millions of tweets pass through its line each day. We all know there are Twitter accounts which are almost empty, with 1-2 tweets every few days, and there are Twitter accounts from which we get a flood of tweets, which can sometimes drown our whole timeline. Where do you fall into the mix? Do you love sharing on Twitter and tweet multiple times a day, or are you one of those who prefer to tweet once every 2-3 days? Or maybe you don’t even own a Twitter account?

Do you love seeing many tweets from your friends? Or do you think people should limit themselves to several tweets per week so as to not create an over-crowded timeline for everyone?

Do You Use Social Recommendation Apps To Find A Good Place To Eat? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we asked you if tablets will eventually replace laptops. We got all sorts of interesting opinions in the comments, but at the end of the day, most of you thought that tablets will never replace laptops, and that they will always have different niches to fill.

Out of 415 readers who voted, 48% think tablets will never entirely replace laptops, 32% think it might actually happen, but that today’s tablets are still missing some key components, 20% think it’s a sure thing, and is only a matter of time, and 1% think that the iPad will replace laptops, but other tablets won’t.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

As you can see, 3 voters thought that Apple’s iPad will manage to replace laptops, while other tablets won’t. Would be interesting to know the reasons behind these votes!

This week’s poll question is: Do You Use Social Recommendation Apps To Find A Good Place To Eat?

Social recommendation apps for restaurants are all the rage lately. Apps and websites such as Yelp and Urbanspoon are highly popular, and many people use them as a gauge when deciding where to have dinner. These apps can be a great source of information when you’re looking for a good place to eat in a new town, and can also be used to find new places in your own local city. This method is not foolproof, however, and you can find yourself in a place you would not otherwise go to, just because you trusted a stranger’s recommendation. Some people still prefer asking their own friends for help, and thus reduce the chance of falling on a dud. So what is your view on the matter?

Have you had good or bad experience with these social recommendation apps? Or maybe you never even tried them? And if so, why? Share everything in the comments.

What Is The Future Of Paper? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Last week we asked you which major company was the best of 2011. With companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon on the list, I didn’t expect this poll to create any major surprises. Alas, our readers are not to be taken for granted, and the winning company of 2011 is not in the above three…

Out of 483 readers who voted, almost 29% named Mozilla as the best company of 2011. Google game in close second with 25% of the votes, with third place going to Apple (19%), followed by Amazon (9%), Samsung (6%), Microsoft (4%), Facebook (2%), with Nokia trailing the pack at less than 0.5%. 4% of the voters thought the title should go to none of these companies.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

So the surprising winner of this poll was Mozilla, who really did do some impressive things this year in its battle against Google Chrome. Microsoft, who has been working rather hard this year, did not seem to impress MakeUseOf’s readers that much.

image

This week’s poll question is: What Is The Future Of Paper?

If you’ve ever watched even one sci-fi movie as a kid, you’ve been waiting ever since for those flying cars and a life without paper. In reality, paper still has a strong hold on our society, although it’s quickly diminishing. Many people choose to forego paper bills entirely, and pay everything online. E-readers have also had quite an impact in the short time they’ve been around, and more and more people are leaving paper books behind. So is paper going to disappear soon, just like in the movies, or is all this just a drop in the ocean of paper, which will stay with us forever?

If you think paper will disappear in time, vote for the answer which states the closest number of years. Don’t forget to share in the comments exactly why you think paper will stay or disappear, and what would be the substitutes.

Which Major Company Is The Best Of 2011? [MakeUseOf Poll]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg?323f2c" alt=""/>In the spirit of Christmas, we asked you last week for href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/electronic-christmas-cards-makeuseof-poll/">your opinion regarding electronic Christmas cards. While not many of you voted (probably busy with Christmas dinners and presents), the majority of voters still prefer plain old paper cards over anything else.

Out of 147 voters, 24% think e-cards are great and prefer them over paper cards, 40% think paper cards are more personal and are generally superior, 16% are happy as long as they get some kind of card, and a full 20% don’t like sending cards at all.

Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

So here is some useful information for you for next year: if in doubt, send a paper card!

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image14.png?323f2c" alt="image" width="321" height="551" border="0" />

This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Which Major Company Is The Best Of 2011?

2011 is over, and it’s time to think back on everything that’s happened. Among other things, 2011 saw the release of Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich, the new iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iOS 5, Facebook’s Timeline profiles, Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus S, Windows Phone Mango and Nokia’s new WP7 devices, Mozilla’s move to quick update cycles, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, the public launch of Google+ and much much more. So taking all this into account, which is your favorite company of 2011? Who made the greatest progress? Who launched the best products? It’s time for you to choose!

align="center"> />

Explain in the comments why you chose the company you did. Further more, if you chose “none of the above”, which do you think should be the best company of 2011?

    What Do You Think Of Electronic Christmas Cards? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg?323f2c" alt=""/>Last week we asked you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/facebooks-timeline-profiles-makeuseof-poll/">what you thought of Facebook’s new Timeline profiles. It seems that there is no real consensus about Timeline profiles, and while some people think they’re great, others can’t stand them.

    Out of 370 voters, 32% think the new profiles are great, 24% don’t think it matters that much, 36% don’t like Timeline and wish they didn’t have to switch, and 8% don’t even use Facebook and therefore couldn’t care less.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    Facebook put a lot of work into Timeline, yet its success seems to be only halfhearted.  Among people who actually care about it, Timeline is definitely not a smashing hit. With a third of the voters not liking it and not wanting to switch, it might be time for Facebook to go back to the drawing boards. On the other hand, many people don’t like changes in Facebook in general, so it might just be one  more thing to get used to.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image10.png?323f2c" alt="image" width="319" height="532"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: What Do You Think Of Electronic Christmas Cards?

    Sending Christmas cards is a long-lived tradition, and for many people it symbolizes the togetherness and friendship of the holiday season. Some people like to keep in touch with friends by writing a personal Christmas card every year, while for others this is more of a chore they perform out of politeness. Electronic Christmas cards are a fast and easy way to send out lots of cards without the extra work of going out to buy cards, sitting down to write each one and then going out to the mailbox to mail them. So what is your preferred tradition?

    align="center"> />

    If you prefer regular paper cards, what makes them better? And what makes electronic cards the better choice to spread some Christmas cheer?

    What Do You Think Of Facebook’s New Timeline Profiles? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    class="alignright size-full wp-image-77875" title="STATIC POLLS" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg?323f2c" alt=""/>Last week we asked you to decide, once and for all,  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/angry-birds-makeuseof-poll/">what you think of Angry Birds. Surprisingly, the votes were divided almost equally between readers who love Angry Birds and people who think it’s a lot of hype about nothing.

    Out of 353 voters, 54% gave an ultimate “Yes!” for Angry Birds, 42% made “No!” their final verdict, and a full %5 claimed they don’t know what Angry Birds is. We can only wonder if they were serious.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

Now, everyone who wants Timeline can finally get it, and even evaluate for 7 days before everyone sees it. Timeline is a huge change from how the old Facebook profiles looked, and should potentially include everything you ever did up till the day you were born. Once And For All, Angry Birds – Yes Or No? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 11 December 2011. Tags: , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/polls1.jpg?323f2c" alt="polls" />Last week we asked you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/browser-install-parents-computer-makeuseof-poll/">which browser you’d prefer to install on your parents’ computer. This does not merely investigate which browser MakeUseOf readers deem as the best, but which one they think is simple enough, easy enough and good enough for people who are not computer geeks.

    Out of 831 readers who voted, a full 50% would install Chrome on their parents’ computer, 34% would go for Firefox, 7% think IE9 is the best option, 4% voted for Opera, 2% for Safari, another 2% would install an older version of Internet Explorer, and 1% chose none of the above.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    Although the battle between Chrome and Firefox was a fierce one, Chrome managed to steal an impressive lead and is definitely the preferred browser for less computer savvy people. The surprising part was the amount of people who chose Opera – almost 5%. If so many people think it’s good enough for their parents, maybe we should all give it a second look.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/poll.jpg?323f2c" alt="poll" width="331" height="647"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Once and for All, Angry Birds – Yes or No?

    Angry Birds has been with us for a while. In fact, it’s hard to remember a time when it wasn’t around. There’s almost no quarrel about the addictiveness of the game, but what do you really think about it? Is it the best thing since Super Mario Bros 3 or is it an annoying and overrated fad? This week there aren’t many answers to choose from, so it’s time to decide, once and for all!

    align="center"> />

    What is is about Angry Birds that make people so excited? Or so annoyed? What makes it a really good game or a really bad one? Or have you never even heard of it? (is that possible?) Share your opinions!

    Which Browser Would You Install On Your Parents’ Computer? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 05 December 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/polls.jpg" alt="polls" />Last week we wondered whether you thought  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/google-facebook-makeuseof-poll/">Google+ will eventually take over Facebook. The votes were divided almost equally between the possible five answers, with a small majority who believes Google+ is way better and is on its way to smash Facebook to smithereens.

    Out of 628 voters, 28% think Google+ is way better then Facebook, 12% think Google+ has no chance and that Facebook is here to stay, 25% believe there’s room for both and neither will take over, 20% think Google+ needs to improve if its to make an impression on Facebook, and 16% believe social networks as we know them are bound to disappear anyway.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    All in all, more then 50% of the voters think Google+ is not going to take over Facebook any time soon. I guess the guys over at Facebook can relax, at least for a little while. But they shouldn’t relax too much!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/2011-12-03-20h03_59.jpg" alt="" width="323" height="646"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Which Browser Would You Install on Your Parents’ Computer?

    The holiday season is officially upon us, and many will travel home from wherever they are, to take care of the old family computer (among other things). The browser scene keeps changing on us, and while Firefox 4 might not have been for everyone, Firefox 8 is a whole different story. Chrome and Safari are getting much more stable, and IE is not such a bad option anymore, either. So when you update your parents’ computer this year, what browser will you choose to install?

    Why did you choose the browser you voted for? What makes it better for people who are not really computer savvy?

    Will Google+ Take Over Facebook? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 27 November 2011. Tags: , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/polls3.jpg" alt="polls" />Last week we asked href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-phone-7-makeuseof-poll/">what you think of Windows Phone 7. While Windows Phone 7 is the new player in the field, a surprising number of voters stated that they either already use it or want to use it as it is right now. A small number of voters think it will never be good enough to tackle the current competitors in the market.

    Out of 246 voters, 34% already use WP7 and think it’s awesome, 2% use it but don’t think it’s that good, 16% want to get one right now, 15% think it looks good but are giving it more time, 12% think it will never be good enough and 20% think that while it’s probably OK, they will never switch to it.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    Almost 70% of the readers who voted are giving Windows Phone 7 a chance. This is definitely good news for the third major contender in the mobile OS market!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-11-27-18h00_25.jpg" alt="" width="325" height="681"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Will Google+ Take Over Facebook?

    Google+ is not longer new, but compared to Facebook, it’s still the new kid on the block. While the joining rate amazed everyone when Google+ first launched, it still doesn’t seem to hurt Facebook in any meaningful way. But Google are not giving up so easily, and new features keep rolling off the Google+ printing press, making it better all the time. So where does the future of social networking lie? Google+, or Facebook?

    What You Need To Know About Sandy Bridge-E [MakeUseOf Explains]

    Posted on 24 November 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sandybridgethumb.jpg" alt="" />Intel has just unleashed a new line of processors. It’s not based on a new architecture, but is instead an expansion of the current Sandy Bridge line. Now, instead of a maximum of four cores, you can buy a processor with up to six!

    Of course, you could do that months ago –  but you’d have to purchase a processor using the Nehalem architecture. That made no sense, because the quickest quad-core Sandy Bridge options were almost as fast and hundreds less expensive. Does Sandy Bridge-E resolve that issue? Let’s take a closer look.

    Behind the Name

    Once again, Intel has created a name that’s not nearly as clear as they might have thought. What’s the E stand for? Efficiency? Eco? Extreme?

    Nope. It stands for Enthusiast. The Sandy Bridge-E is built to be the best of the best, and as a result it’s not meant to appeal to a layman user who uses his or her PC for common tasks like web browsing and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/important-pc-gaming-terms-explained/">PC gaming. Instead, it’s targeted at people who need as many cores as possible, and use demanding applications that can actually take advantage of multiple threads.

    Processor Details

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sandybridge-especs.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="282" />

    Two new processors will be offered at launch, the Core i7-3930K and the Core i7-3960X. The difference between these choices is clock speed and cache. The 3,930K offers a 3.2 GHz base clock speed and 12MB of cache, while Core i7-3,960X offers a 3.3 GHz base clock speed and 15MB of cache. Both have href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hyperthreading-technology-explained/">hyper-threading, so the six cores can support twelve threads.

    What about pricing? The MSRP is $555 for the 3,930K and $990 for the 3,960X. I’d expect retailers to actually ask more for these initially, as despite the already high prices, they will be in high demand. They are, after all, the most powerful processors money can buy.

    That may sound dramatic, but it’s absolutely true. href="http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Processors/Intel-Sandy-Bridge-E-Review-Core-i7-3960X-and-X79-Chipset-Tested/Render-Tests">In testing by PC Perspective, the new processors were able to outperform the Core-i7 2600K by as much as 30%. As you might expect, programs with excellent multi-thread support revealed the largest gap between the quad-core and six-core Sandy Bridge entries. Software that doesn’t require the extra cores, such as games, show little difference between the new processors and the older quad-core Sandy Bridge products.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sandybridgecooler.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="310" />

    Strangely, these new LGA 2011 processors do not come with a heatsink or cooler, making them the only processors sold by Intel in an OEM box without a cooling solution. Don’t forget to budget a processor cooler when purchasing one of these processors. Intel will offer its typical low-end cooler for $20, but also plans to offer a water cooler for around $80. Of course, for the same money you could purchase a third-party cooler. The choice is yours.

    A New Chipset, Too

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/x79blockdiagram.jpg" alt="" width="556" height="483" />

    In addition to the new processors, Intel is unleashing a new chipset, called X79. It is meant as a replacement for the X58 chipset that was once considered Intel’s flagship. Because X58 does not offer Sandy Bridge support, the chipset has been of questionable use since the release of the newest processor architecture.

    X79 introduces yet another new processor socket, LGA2011. There are other changes, as well. RAM support has changed from href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/difference-ddr2-ddr3-ram-technology-explained/">tri-channel (as found on X58) to quad-channel, and the new chipset has been built to handle the high power requirements of the new processors, all of which are slapped with a 130W TDP. By comparison, a Core i7-2600K has a 95W TDP.

    Chipset changes were also required because the new Sandy Bridge-E processors, like their previous brethren, entirely eliminate the Northbridge.

    Should You Buy One?

    So, you’re impressed by the performance. Now you’re wondering – should I blow my savings on one of these? Or is this not the best use of my cash?

    That depends.

    The title “enthusiast” doesn’t properly describe the exclusivity of these processors. I am an enthusiast, but I would never buy one of these, because I don’t run software that needs the extra cores. My most demanding tasks is gaming, which still sees only a small benefit from four cores, never mind six.

    Instead, these products are aimed at people who use computers as important tools for doing work. If a 20% increase in performance can cut an hour off the time it takes for your PC to complete an encoding run, then you’re the kind of person this processor is for. If you regularly edit files with multi-gigabyte file sizes, you’re the kind of person this processor is for. If a computer crash effectively shuts down your business, you’re the kind of person this processor is for.

    And in the hands of such a professional, yes, the high prices can be justified and may in fact pay for themselves in a matter of weeks by saving time that would otherwise be spent waiting for a task to finish.

    Of course, there’s no accounting for taste. If you have a lot of money to spend on a PC, and you want the fastest possible, feel free to jump on the Sandy Bridge-E bandwagon. You may receive much better value from a less powerful configuration, but not every nerd cares about value as much as owning a stonking fast computer.

    Conclusion

    Sandy Bridge-E is an impressive step forward for Intel, and one that is perhaps overdue. The older Nehalem-based six-core processors were still commanding high prices, despite the use of a nearly three year old architecture and chipset.

    With this new line, Intel will once again have a proper flagship that can leave both Intel and AMD’s best in the dust.

    What Do You Think About Windows Phone 7? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 21 November 2011. Tags: , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/polls2.jpg" alt="" />Last week we wondered href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/alternative-keyboard-layouts-makeuseof-poll/">what you think about alternative keyboard layouts. While not many of you voted, the majority who did are curious about alternative keyboard layouts, believe they might be better, but feel that the switch would be too hard. This might be so, but some readers still reported they managed to switch, permanently or for a while.

    Out of 197 voters, an impressive %10 already use an alternative layout, 7% tried it but went back to Qwerty, 49% are curious, but think the switch is probably too hard to tackle, 18% love Qwerty and don’t want to switch at all, and 17% heard about it in the poll for the first time!

    It’s nice to know that our poll could enlighten 33 readers about the existence of alternative layouts. Who knows, they might switch now! Overall, around 17% of the voters have tried alternative layouts, so if you’re curious, the switch may be possible after all.

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: What Do You Think About Windows Phone 7?

    WP7 has been around for almost two years, but only recently has it started gaining popularity. The latest Nokia release might or might not give WP7 the push it’s been needing all this time. But is the OS any good? Is it being underrated by the technology world, or are we all better off sticking to what we already have? Now is the time for you to have your say!

    align="center"> />

    If you already use it, what makes it good or bad? What are the reasons you would consider switching to it? And if you never will, why? Tell us everything in the comments.

    What Do You Think About Alternative Keyboard Layouts? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 14 November 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/polls1.jpg" alt="polls" />Last week we asked you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/prefer-read-books-makeuseof-poll/">how you prefer to read your books. The results showed that the world is not yet completely sold on eReaders: the number of voters who read only paper books is about equal to the number of voters who use eReaders exclusively.

    Out of 490 voters, 30% read only paper books, 16% prefer e-ink eReaders, 11% like the new kids on the block: the tablet eReaders, 34% use an eReader, but also enjoy a paper book from time to time, and 8% are still in the process of deciding what the best reading method is.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    While a third of the voters think eReaders are the best, another third prefer paper books. Having said that, a whopping 62% reported they use an eReader of some kind, whether exclusively or not. This means eReaders are definitely popular, but a rather large portion of the voters still don’t want nothing to do with them.

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: What Do You Think About Alternative Keyboard Layouts?

    If your first reaction is “what?”, you’re probably not alone. A huge majority of computer users use Qwerty as their keyboard layout; it’s the default in almost every keyboard in the world, and everyone is used to it. But there are at least two more layouts out there, href="http://colemak.com/">Colemak and href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard">Dvorak, and according to the people who use them, they’re actually better. So what do MakeUseOf readers think of them?

    align="center"> />

    If you use an alternative layout, which one do you use? What makes it better? What are the reasons for switching or for staying with Qwerty? Share your opinions!

    How Do You Prefer To Read Your Books? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 06 November 2011. Tags: , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/polls.jpg" alt="polls" />Last week we asked if href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/date-leaves-iphone-ring-default-makeuseof-poll/">you would date someone who leaves their iPhone (or any other phone!) ring on default. In general, MakeUseOf readers don’t see ringtones as a deciding factor, and over half of the voters think it doesn’t make any difference.

    Out of 276 voters, 57% don’t care if the ringtone is left on default, 8% think leaving the default ringtone is totally lame, 5% think it’s OK only if it’s a brand new phone, 11% would help change the ringtone and 19% are true Android fans.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    With almost 60% not caring about the default ringtone at all, almost 25% state they do care about it somewhat, and will accept it only under certain conditions or help change it first. Is it the idea of the default ringtone that bothers people, or is it the default iPhone ring itself that’s a little hard to swallow?

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-11-05-15h38_11.png" alt="2011-11-05 15h38_11" width="332" height="631" border="0" />

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: How Do You Prefer To Read Your Books?

    The world of books has gone through a dramatic change over the last few years. It started with cheap paper books that ship for free all over the world, continues with e-ink eReaders such as the Kindle and the Nook, and has no evolved to actual tablets that are meant to be used as readers. So how do you like your books?

    align="center"> />

    If you chose paper, why do you prefer it? And what makes a tablet reader better than e-ink? Will paper books vanish off the face of the earth, or is there a fight in them yet? Share your opinions!

    Would You Date Someone Who Leaves Their iPhone Ring On Default? [MakeUseOf Poll]

    Posted on 31 October 2011. Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/polls.jpg" alt="" />Last week we asked href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/switch-hotmail-makeuseof-poll/">what would make you switch to Hotmail. A little over half of the voters will not give Hotmail a chance, no matter what. The other half are either already using Hotmail or will consider switching.

    Out of 654 voters, 51% will not consider switching to Hotmail for anything, 22% already use Hotmail and think it’s a good solution, 19% will consider switching if Hotmail puts their platform through a complete revamp and 8% want Hotmail to change their name before they will consider switching.

    Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.

    Almost 80% of the voters do not currently use Hotmail (at least not as their main e-mail provider), and most of these will never even consider switching. Hotmail might still be the largest webmail service, but not among MakeUseOf readers!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-30-09h45_49.png" alt="2011-10-30 09h45_49" width="324" height="563"/>

    This week’s href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: Would You Date Someone Who Leaves Their iPhone Ring On Default?

    We hear it around us all the time: that annoying/friendly iPhone default ringtone. Some people don’t care about these things or can’t be bothered to find out how to change the ringtone. Others feel that leaving the ring on default is almost like not naming your dog. Where do MakeUseOf readers stand?

    align="center"> />

    Dates aside, how do you feel about that ever-so-familiar default ringtone? Does it drive you mad every time you hear it or do you think individualization in technology is way overrated?
