3 Steps You Can Take To Reduce The Firefox 4 Memory Leak

If you are looking for ways to tame the beast, I may have some clues! In this article I will show you 3 steps to reduce and limit the chunk Firefox bites off your RAM. I will start with the obvious, but in the last step, we will dive deep into the heart of your browser.
Prologue
I have been using Firefox for many years and have carried over my profile from each version and computer to the next. Over the years, I have accumulated hundreds of bookmarks, dozens of extensions (most disabled), and several plugins. So by version 4, Firefox has grown to a respectable size. You could call it a monster.
To show you that the tips I’m sharing do have an effect, I have documented how memory usage improved on my machine as I went from one step to the next. Unfortunately, I found that Firefox leaks memory, thus I recorded the value after a few minutes, even though in all cases it continued to increase. This is not 100% exact, but it still gives you a good idea of how well each step works.
Counting: 29 open tabs, 31 extensions
State of affairs: 700,740K
1. Close Or Hibernate Tabs
In case you didn’t know this already, the outrageous amount of memory Firefox uses, correlates with the even more outrageous amount of open tabs you cannot get yourself to close. Unfortunately, the easiest way to save a lot of RAM, is to close a lot of tabs.
If you cannot close all of them for the love of it, how about managing your tabs with the help of one of the following extensions:
Personally, I work with TabGroups Manager. The extension helps me to keep the amount of open tabs at bay, and this is how I could remove 13 tabs from memory all at once.

2. Remove Add-Ons
Running add-ons, i.e. extensions, themes, or plugins, eat up quite a bit of RAM. So go through your collection and remove those that you never use. Before entirely removing them, you can disable them and see whether that significantly improves the memory leak. Go to > Firefox > Add-ons and switch between > Extensions > Appearance and > Plugins. Be sure to update them via the > Tools for all add-ons button.
Counting: 16 open tabs, 21 extensions
Memory usage: 443,916K
3. About:Config Hacks
There are several very potent hacks that control how much memory Firefox can or will use. None of them had a huge effect in my demonstration, but your results may vary.
Limit Firefox’ RAM usage
Type > about:config into the URL bar, promise to be careful, and scroll to > browser.cache.disk.capacity. The default value depends on how much RAM you have installed. Double-click it to change the value. Do not limit the RAM usage too aggressively, especially not below the amount of RAM Firefox is using as you apply this hack, so be sure to check first! In my case around 400,000K was a realistic value.
Allow Windows to Claim Back RAM when Firefox is Minimized
With this hack enabled, Windows will be able to claim back RAM more aggressively. In > about:config right-click anywhere and select > New > Boolean and enter > config.trim_on_minimize as the preference name. Double-click the new entry to set its value to > true. Restart Firefox to enable the changes.
Limit Memory Storage for Open Tabs
The last about:config preference we are going to look at is > browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers. The default value is -1, which will automatically determine the maximum amount of pages stored in memory, based on the total amount of RAM. In other word, the bigger your RAM and the more tabs you have open, the bigger the chunk that Firefox will take. You can set this value to zero to not store any pages in memory or to 1 for 32MB, 2 for 64MB, 3 for 128MB etc.

Epilogue
All steps brought some improvement, but the end result was still not very satisfying. Besides, the real problem with Firefox 4 is the memory leak, which in my case was mainly caused by open tabs. Firefox’ memory usage would climb on and on with no way to stop it, other than to close all tabs. When I closed all tabs except for one, Firefox used about 230,000K. With a virgin profile, memory usage went down to around 48,000K; finally a realistic value, but sadly with almost every little bit of customization removed.
Status: virgin Firefox profile, 1 tab open
Memory usage: ~48,000K
The conclusion is that Firefox has a problem, but if you love your open tabs and add-ons, you will have to put up with it. If you prefer a lean and fast browser however, simply ditch everything, create a new profile, and be very restrictive with what you add.

MP3 Players – Memory Storage Options

Digital music players or MP3 players have become a part of our daily lives, much in the same way as cell phones and laptop computers. You see people using them at the gym, your colleagues at work probably have them, and many of your co-passengers on your business flight probably carry one with them. So you finally decided to get your self one, and you wonder which one to get. This article provides a few tips on selecting the type of MP3 player that best suits your needs.
Here is a bit of background on cheap MP3 players. This information will help you better understand the selection information that follows. The MP3 player owes its development to the doctoral work of a student at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He developed an algorithm to compress digital music files. The basic concept of the work is that the human ear has limitations on what tones and sounds it can and cannot perceive. Most music sound tracks contain “extraneous” sounds that we cannot really discern. The algorithm developed in Germany strips away these extraneous elements. With this process, the digital audio file can be compressed to one tenth or one twelfth of its original size without significant loss of sound quality. Additional compression is possible, but this will likely affect the sound quality. This makes the size of the MP3 file much more manageable, and can be stored in smaller memory modules.
MP3 players two fall into two broad categories based on the type of storage device used in them. One class of players has a miniature hard drive, similar to the hard drive in your computer. These players typically have a large storage capacity and units with a hundred or more gigabytes of capacity are not common. On the other hand, the second class of MP3 players relies on electronic memory or flash memory for storage. These storage units are usually much smaller in capacity. Typical flash memory storage units are on the order of eight or sixteen gigabytes. Depending on the number of music files that you would like to store, you can then decide on the type of player that you want to pick. For an initial of the number of songs, you can assume that each file will be approximately five megabytes in size. Using this assumption, each gigabyte of storage space will allow you to store around two hundred songs.
MP3 players with hard drives have to major drawbacks when compared to players that use digital memory. The hard drive is an electro-mechanical device. So it tends to consume much more power than a flash memory unit. This means that you can go through batteries quite quickly. It helps if the batteries are rechargeable, but you still have to deal with the hassle of plugging in the batteries or the entire unit in order to recharge. Flash memory consumes much less power. The second drawback is that hard drive can skip if the unit is subjected to jolts. So if you plan to use your MP3 player while you jog or workout, you are probably better off with a flash memory unit.

mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format

have bought one mp3/mp4 player from china. It had 2 GB memory and it had new version of firmware. Due to some error in mp3 player, I format it. Then when I checked memory space, I found that it has only 109 MB. I don’t know why mp3/mp4 player lost memory after format. Anyone else having the same problem. Please help me.

Hey you are using fake mp3/mp4 player and that’s why you are getting such type of problem. You must check before buying whether it is working properly or not. Most of the people have such type of problem, who have take china made electronic device. If your mp3/mp4 player has warranty then you have toreplace it with new one to get rid out of this problem.

Have you tried to format it using Command prompt. If not then use following steps to do this.
1.First connect your mp3/mp4 player to computer.
2.Now open Command prompt.
3.Now type “format _ ” (Instead of “_” use drive letter of your mp3/mp4 player )
That’s it.

You have to use TestDisk utility to fix this problem. TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

I able to fix this problem by using SD Formatter 2.0. I think you also use it to get rid out of this problem. This software formats all SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards using a formatting program that complies with official SD memory card requirements. SD formatting provides quick and easy access to your SD memory card. SD or SDHC memory card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with official SD memory card requirements and optimum performance may not be experienced.

I also had the same problem. Then as per your answer I used TestDisk utility to fix this problem and it really works for me. But one problem is there. I able to recover only 1gb from it. This means that now my mp3/mp4 player shows only 1gb free space instead of 2gb. Can anyone tell me how do I get back to 2gb. Is there any kind of software available.

Hey I also have the same model and same problem. I also format my mp3 player and then it shows only 178mb free space. I tried various method to fix this problem, but nothing happened. Then after frustrating I replace my mp3/mp4 player with new one and I able to fix this problem. I think you also replace your mp3/mp4 player with new one to get rid out of this problem.
