Microsoft Skydrive Gets Big Update – 25GB Of Cloud Storage

cloud storageMicrosoft SkyDrive has been around for a while, but was recently given a fairly significant update. We took some time to talk to Microsoft about the new features and play with it all, so here’s a breakdown of what you can expect.

You’ll need a Windows Live account to start making full use of SkyDrive. For those too lazy to read – there’s 25gb of storage, web-based versions of popular Office apps; collaborative editing that doesn’t require everyone to login; and an iPhone app you should probably avoid for now.

Web-Based Office Apps

In SkyDrive, you now have access to cut-down versions of popular Office apps, to both create and edit documents without the need for a full offline Office suite (though you can at any point open your SkyDrive files in regular Office apps, then seamlessly save back again). Personally, I’m not a fan of Google Docs, so if your documents are predominantly MS formats and you’d like to move into the cloud without the hassle of importing and exporting etc, this is a great solution – and free.

cloud storage

The web-based versions work across OS, taking advantages of new HTML5 standards rather than Silverlight, so that’s something to keep in mind if someone mails a Word document to your shiny iMac when you don’t have Office for Mac.

Collaborative Editing

You’ll be pleased to know that the cloud versions of Office now support collaborative editing, or at least a hybrid form of it. First up – this feature isn’t as advanced as say Google Docs, where you can see collaborators typing in real time and changes are done at a character level. Instead, SkyDrive takes the approach of locking certain parts of the document – a paragraph will be marked as being edited for instance. Once changes are available to view, you need to manually click the update changes button.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a huge step forward in a world where Office documents are still the norm in many companies – and changes at the paragraph level are more than sufficient for most of us. It’s a shame it doesn’t work asynchronously though as manually refreshing things is quite tedious.

Public Share Links and Edit Privileges

Along with collaborative editing comes an easy way to share your files and folders. Three levels of links are available – public, can edit, and view only. You can either share this straight out to your Facebook and Linked In status, or get a regular URL to share in Twitter etc.

free cloud storage

One really cool feature is that you don’t need a Windows Live account to edit the documents if someone sends you a link, so it’s a fantastic tool get anyone’s input without complicated sign ups. Compare to Google Docs which requires all collborators to have a Google Account in order to sign in and edit documents, which can be a real hassle with less tech-savvy users.

On the downside, the share links are ridiculously lengthy. I can’t help thinking that some kind of automated link shortening service would have been really easy to add. As it is, a simple view-only link to a photo comes out like this:

https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=86d16a5e767798c4&resid=86D16A5E767798C4!107&parid=86D16A5E767798C4!102&authkey=!AArcUia4KgCYgbI

25GB Totally Free Storage

Even if you don’t need collaborative features, SkyDrive’s free 25gb is a generous cloud storage locker. It doesn’t sync with your files, so you can offload files totally to the cloud if you want, or just use it for backup. The interface is very Explorer-like so Windows users will feel right at home, but it also works just fine on a Mac. We had a few issues during testing with Chrome though, so stick to Firefox or Safari (or Explorer if you insist).

iPhone App

Unlike Apple’s iCloud service, Microsoft has made a big effort to make the SkyDrive available on other devices. Unfortunately, the SkyDrive app for iPhone is decidedly under-developed – the user interface is confusing at best; files must be uploaded one by one as there’s no mass-upload feature; a manual refresh is often needed to keep it in sync with the web-based version; and worst of all – if you take a photo directly within the app, and it fails to upload (as it often did in my testing), the photo is lost forever – it doesn’t get saved to your Camera Roll as you would expect. I’m afraid I really can’t recommend the iPhone side of SkyDrive until a good update is released. If you must, take the photos with the Camera app first, then do the Choose Existing dialog to upload it.

If you have ventured to try the app out, and can’t for the life of you figure out how to delete a photo from the SkyDrive iPhone app – you need to click the “share” button in the top right and change the thumbnail view to a “Details view“, then you can swipe left to right to reveal Delete on the item.

cloud storage

Though I didn’t get a chance to play with SkyDrive integration on Windows Phone 7, I think it’s safe to assume it’s a more fulfilling experience than the iPhone app; and I think we can also say that SkyDrive is likely to be strongly integrated into the upcoming Windows 8.

SkyDrive is obviously Microsoft’s answer to iCloud and Google Docs, and while iCloud is still the stronger platform in my opinion, it’s limited to Apple devices. SkyDrive is cross-platform for the most part, and has made a valiant attempt to integrate with iPhones too – hopefully an update will tackle the problems I’ve outlined.

For Windows users and Windows Phone 7 owners – SkyDrive is a clear winner. Even if you’re not a big fan of Microsoft stuff, you can’t argue with 25gb free space. Collaborative editing that doesn’t require the user to login to anything is unique to SkyDrive and could be a great feature for many if you’re sharing with less technically capable users or large numbers who you can’t guarantee have Live / Google accounts.

Have you had a chance to play with the new SkyDrive yet? What do you think? How do you compare it to Google Docs, or iCloud?

Why Microsoft Should Not Be Pushing Their New Metro UI Onto Their Other Products [Opinion]

With the introduction of the Windows Phone platform in 2010, Microsoft unveiled the Metro user interface, designed to make accessing information quick and easy. Rather than litter their new mobile platform with endless rows of icons, Microsoft’s tile-based interface proved that there was another way to make mobile phones functional.

Such has been the critical acclaim for this user interface that Microsoft has since opted to roll out Metro across its other consumer products. First was its introduction on the Xbox 360 and later this year it will play a big part in Microsoft’s story as a key element of the Windows 8 operating system. But is this the best use for the UI? Surely a mobile phone user interface should stay on such a device? After all, don’t computer users want to be able use their mouse and keyboard and quickly launch their chosen apps rather than scroll through tiles?

What Is Metro? Microsoft’s Signature UI Explained

From a personal point of view, I’m a big fan of Metro on the Windows Phone. It is fast, slick, functional and logical and it has been instrumental in turning Microsoft’s mobile fortunes around. Additionally it has provided the mobile industry as a whole, a much-needed kick in the rear to pull it out of the mire of iOS cloning into which it was readily sinking.

A design language established initially for use with Windows Phone, Metro features the uniform use of the Segoe WP typeface, tiles and a general grouping of similar functions and features under a single tile. For instance, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are grouped with contacts under the People Hub on Windows Phone devices. The tile-based Start screen interface on a Windows Phone can be adjusted to suit your preferences, with users typically placing their most-used apps and hubs at the top.

Almost all Windows Phone apps use the Metro look

Additionally the fresh approach to presenting information, available by scrolling left and right, enables app designers plenty of space with which to present menus and options and discards the need for a dedicated menu button. All in all, Metro works well on Windows Phone and you can see why Microsoft is so enthralled by it. But is it suitable as a “signature user interface”?

Success On One Platform Does Not Guarantee Success On Another

The beta release of Windows 8 demonstrated how the Metro UI had been redeveloped for use on larger devices, specifically tablets. While Microsoft’s focus in this area is admirable – after all, they started the tablet computer market, yet thanks to Apple’s iPad find themselves several years behind – it can be argued that most Windows 8 users don’t want or need a finger-friendly user interface.

The new Start screen in Windows 8, powered by the Metro UI

After all, Metro is intended for use by fingers rather than a mouse and keyboard. While it might be an ideal UI for the rumoured ARM-based Windows 8 tablets, the presence of Metro as a key element of Windows 8 for desktops and high-end tablets is puzzling.

While it is possible to navigate around the tile-based Start menu in Windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard, it is a little unwieldy, much like playing a piano while wearing gloves. There is also the matter of just how important using a touch-focused user interface is to the standard user.

As things stand, Windows 7 is a perfectly good operating system that is enjoying strong user take-up and has a good reputation, particularly among corporate users. Conversely Windows 8 is being designed specifically for business users and yet there seems to be a gap between what users want from a UI and what Microsoft is planning to offer in 2012.

The Metro UI has recently spread to Xbox

Although there is the ability to switch to a version of the traditional desktop view in Windows 8 – ideal for legacy and office applications – office-based users are likely to discard Metro entirely, reducing it to little more than an overlay UI. Overlays were great for Microsoft 3-4 years ago when they needed to extend the life of Windows Mobile, but we really should have moved away from that era.

Too Much Metro Too Soon?

Why does Microsoft want to replace Windows 7 so soon? More importantly, why is it pushing Metro as a user interface so heavily?

Some might argue that Microsoft’s reputation has improved in recent years and that Metro is an embodiment of this change. While their great rival Apple has grown into a monolithic retirement fund for lawyers, Microsoft has been embracing user communities, for instance helping them to set up ways of legally unlocking its new phones.

This positive pull is mirrored in the clear typography and ease of use found in Metro, but to spread the UI across all of Microsoft’s consumer platforms is potentially dangerous. Windows 8 could founder based on its very presence; so soon after the Vista debacle this is something that Microsoft could well do without.

Play Cut The Rope On Any Browser For Free, Courtesy Of Microsoft [News]

Good news Cut the Rope fans! You are no longer limited to playing your favorite game on your mobile device. Microsoft, together with ZeptoLab and Pixel Lab, has created an HTML5 version of of the popular game, which you can play for free on any major browser.

The free game includes 27 levels, and you can play it right now simply by pointing your browser to CutTheRope.ie. As mentioned, the game was developed entirely in HTML5, no Flash in sight (ideally), and was made especially for playing on Microsoft’s flagship browser, Internet Explorer 9.

If pure HTML 5 sounds too good to be true, you’re probably right. As mentioned in a Behind the Scenes page made by the game’s developers, some media playback issues in Chrome and Firefox forced them to fall back on a Flash plugin for correct music and sound effects. I tried the game on Chrome, and while it worked well, even with Flash disabled (except for some minor audio bugs), it wouldn’t even load when all of my plugins were automatically blocked. This might be due to a bug in Chrome.

cut-the-rope-ie

While the game works well in all browsers, some levels, which are unique to this version, can only be unlocked by pinning the game to the taskbar, an exclusive feature to Internet Explorer 9. So this might be a good a time as any to try IE9, if you haven’t done so yet.

Happy Om Nom Nomming!

Microsoft Launches SkyDrive App For iPhone & Windows Phone [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/skydrive-icon.jpg?323f2c" alt="skydrive-icon" />Following the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-announces-step-office-ipad-onenote-news/">recent OneNote launch for iPad, Microsoft is moving on with another major release – a native SkyDrive app. SkyDrive is Microsoft’s answer to cloud storage services such as iCloud and Dropbox, and they’ve now launched a designated SkyDrive app for both href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skydrive/id477537958?ls=1&mt=8">iPhone and href="http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/ad543082-80ec-45bb-aa02-ffe7f4182ba8">Windows Phone.

The new SkyDrive app is especially useful to those who already use SkyDrive, and can now access all their files and folders from anywhere they go. Through the mobile app you can access your documents, music, videos and pictures, and share them with other people. You can also manage files, create and delete folders, and more.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/skydrive-app.jpg?323f2c" alt="skydrive-app" width="514" height="376" border="0" />

Understandably, the Windows Phone app is somewhat more integrated with the service. Windows Phone users can automatically upload pictures taken on the device’s camera to SkyDrive, and share files from SkyDrive through text messages, e-mails and IMs. The iPhone version is available in 32 languages, and shows that despite the work on Windows Phone, Microsoft knows where most of their users are.

If you’re a regular user of Dropbox, Box, or other services, you might like to know that SkyDrive is offering 25GB of free storage. This is compared to Dropbox who offer 2GB and Box who offer 5GB. Microsoft Releases Temporary Fix For Duqu Virus [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/duqufixthumb.jpg" alt="" />Several days ago href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-word-bug-linked-duqu-virus-news/">we reported that a nasty new Windows bug had been found. It is particularly nasty for two reasons – it involves a previously unknown exploit, and it may be the brainchild of the same group that developed href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tech-fun/stuxnet-anatomy-computer-virus/">Stuxnet.

    Now, Microsoft has released a temporary fix. The fix is not a patch, but rather a workaround that involves using the command prompt to disable access to T2EMBED.DLL. Alternatively, href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2639658">users can have this taken care of automatically with the Microsoft Fit It utility.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/duqufix1.png" alt="" width="560" height="239" />

    Microsoft warns that using the workaround will cause embedded href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-cool-free-computer-fonts-stand/">font technology to no longer work correctly. Applications that use it will “fail to display properly”. Microsoft does not elaborate, but this most likely means embedded fonts will not appear and instead be replaced by a default font. Webpages sometimes use font embedding to allow users to view web text in a font that’s not installed on the user’s computer, for example.

    While the workaround does provide temporary protection, a patch is being developed to close the exploit and allow for safe use of embedded fonts. It will be release automatically via Windows Update once it becomes available. No release date has been promised.

    For our readers at home, our original advice – don’t open Word documents found in emails – is a perfectly adequate solution. Businesses with multiple computers, however, would be wise to use this fix.

    Microsoft Word Bug Linked To Duqu Virus [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/antivirus.jpg" alt="" />A new virus is making the rounds, and this one has the potential to be very serious. The Duqu virus has source code similar to Stuxnet, which was believed to have played havoc with Iran’s nuclear program. Everyone is looking to unlock the secret behind this serious virus, but for now it looks like it is being linked with a piece of software downloaded from corrupted Microsoft Word documents. If you receive any Word documents from an unknown party, do not open them.

    Basically, this virus enters your system and could potentially allow malicious individuals into your system where they can take control and take all kinds of data. This would obviously be especially bad if you have credit card information on your computer or if the virus ends up on the system of a corporation where there can be all kinds of private data. Worse still, they could target government, similar to Stuxnet.

    This virus could very well be made by the same people who made Stuxnet, or at the very least, their source could have been stolen to create this Duqu virus.

    As of now, there is no fix for this virus. For the time being, we suggest that all of our users be extremely wary of all Word documents they receive, especially if you don’t know the person who sent it.

    Microsoft Releases A Hotmail Android App & Some More Hotmail Upgrades [News]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image36.png" alt="" />Microsoft has announced that we should all “ href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/anotherlookathotmail/">give Hotmail another look“. This does not mean that Hotmail’s whole interface is changed forever, but there are certainly some new additions that are mainly aimed at e-mail organization and war against “greymail”.

    The most exciting part of this announcement is the release of an official Hotmail Android app. Microsoft has finally decided to jump on the Android train, and Hotmail and Android users finally have an official app with two-way sync for e-mails, contacts and calendar.

    The changes in Hotmail include new and better ways to control greymail, which is basically newsletters you’ve signed up to and forgot or changed your mind about. Hotmail now puts all these newsletters into a Newsletter category, and offers a one-click unsubscribe button which is supposed to do the dirty work for you.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-10-04-20h59_12.png" alt="2011-10-04 20h59_12" width="474" height="565" border="0" />

    Among the changes is also Scheduled Cleanup, which helps you keep just the most relevant e-mails. Using this feature you can select a sender (like a newsletter provider) and then choose to keep only the latest e-mail from that sender and delete or move all the old ones. “Flags done right” is another feature which moves all flagged messages to the top of your inbox and also allows you to automatically flag e-mails from a certain sender or with a specific subject line.

    Microsoft has also finally seen the need for custom categories, and you can now create your own categories and quickly apply them to an entire group of e-mails.

    As mentioned above, you can now download the official href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hotmail.Z7">Hotmail app for Android, which is certainly an upgrade for some users.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/image37.png" alt="image" width="302" height="384" border="0" />

    What do you think? Are these changes to Hotmail worthy or should Microsoft consider a much more prominent facelift? Let us know in the comments.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA01.png" border="0" alt="security misconfiguration" />

    Note that you require Administrator rights for all machines that you wish to scan. You can scan a single or multiple systems based on the computer name or IP address. If you select to scan multiple computers, you need to enter a domain name or a range of IP addresses.

    For this demonstration I went with scanning a single computer.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA02.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    The scanning options are straightforward, although not necessarily clear for the inexperienced user. If you don’t understand what some of the options mean, click the > Scanning Options link at the bottom for detailed explanations. The information will load in a separate Internet Explorer window.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA03.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    The scan merely takes a few seconds and returns an overview of issues found in different categories. Each item is scored and a summary of the result is provided, along with links to further information material.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA04.png" border="0" alt="security configuration" />

    Checks that were passed receive a green score, items that could not be checked are marked with a grey minus, room for improvements is highlighted by a blue score, a yellow score indicates a non-critical vulnerability and a red score alerts the user to a failed check and thus a critical security issue. Follow the respective links for detailed information about what was scanned or instructions on how an issue can be corrected.

    All reports are saved and can be accessed at a later time for reference. You can also print or copy your report to the clipboard.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MBSA05.png" border="0" alt="security misconfiguration" />

    Conclusion

    Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer is a very good tool to quickly get an overview of security-related settings on your Windows machine. Instructions for correcting detected security misconfigurations are very clear and should therefore be easy to follow for the average user. Overall, the documentation is surprisingly detailed and well done, almost as if Microsoft expected non-IT folks to use this tool.

    It must be said though that fixing most configurations does require some basic understanding of how Windows works. For example an issue with the file system is not necessarily security relevant and the instructions do not provide information on how to find the drive that doesn’t run NTFS. Moreover, some issues require advanced knowledge and should be left to the experts to be fixed, for example setting a password expiration.

    For more information, also have a look at this article from Microsoft Patterns & Practices: class="vt-p" title="How To: Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer" href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff647642.aspx">How To Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.

    Create Stunning 3D Panoramas On Your iPhone With Microsoft Photosynth [iOS]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro10.jpg" alt="iphone panorama app" />Creating a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-amazing-panoramas-in-windows-for-free/">panorama from multiple images is no longer the arduous, drawn out tweak-fest it used to be. If you’ve got access to professional software like class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-idiot-guide-photoshop/">Photoshop or even basic freebies like Windows Photo Gallery then creating a panorama never takes more than a few clicks.

    Microsoft Photosynth is technology you’ve probably seen before, as it kicked up quite a storm when the company announced it. Taking multiple photos of differing size, orientation, quality and so on; Microsoft (with help from some clever chaps at the University of Washington) released a tool that could make a 3D panorama automatically.

    The technology is called Photosynth, and it really has to be played with to be believed. Luckily iOS users (iPhone 3GS & 4, iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4G) can now create panoramas on the fly. You class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/frame-frame-free-photography-app-ios-stopmotion-antishake/">don’t need a tripod, existing images or money – the iPhone panorama app is free and startlingly easy to use.

    Creating A Masterpiece

    Capturing the world around you in a 360-degree panorama is not as hard as it sounds, though there are a few things to remember in order to get the best results from Photosynth. The first screen you’ll see upon launching the app is your camera image and a “Tap to Start” message, and 3 tabs at the bottom of the screen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ip_taptostart.jpg" alt="iphone panorama app" width="333" height="500" />

    The tab on the left takes you to your existing Photosynths, and the right hand tab allows you to connect sharing accounts and edit a few settings. One setting worth mentioning is Exposure Lock which will stop your camera adjusting for different light levels, delivering an evenly exposed shot (I’d recommend leaving it alone to begin with).

    On the centre tab (a camera icon), tapping the screen will initiate a new panorama. Photosynth will start taking photos straight away, and as you move your camera around you will notice the program automatically building up a panoramic image of the scene.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="alignnone size-full wp-image-76636" title="create_synth1" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/create_synth1.jpg" alt="iphone panorama" width="333" height="500" />

    It is important not to move from your starting position when you are creating your 360-degree image as this will cause inaccuracies within the panorama. If possible try to stand perfectly still and pivot your phone in its current position. This is undoubtedly the best method for capturing a panorama, and you’ll see what I mean once you’ve messed a few up.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/create_synth2.jpg" alt="iphone panorama" width="333" height="500" />

    As you pivot your phone new pictures will be added to the panorama. At times the green Photosynth capture box will turn yellow, and this indicates manual capture is required. At these points it is up to you to decide whether manual capture is going to add to or detract from the image. You can also overwrite existing photos by touching to take a new photo, or hit undo to remove your last shot. Each scene is different, but don’t forget to capture what’s above and below you!

    When you think you’re finished, hit Done and the app will automatically stitch your images together for you. It can take about 5 minutes for a full 360-degree scene, not bad considering how long it would take by hand. A flat image of your panorama is also saved to the camera roll, like the one below.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/flatphotosynth.jpg" alt="iphone panorama" width="580" height="290" />

    Photosynthing All Over The World

    So you’ve got your panorama, and it’s awesome. You can pan around by swiping on the screen, pinch to zoom and there’s an enticing Share button in the bottom left corner. Touching this will give you three options: share to Facebook, publish to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bing-maps-plannin-car-trips-easier/">Bing Maps and upload to Photosynth.net.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ip_sharesynth.jpg" alt="iphone panoramic picture app" width="333" height="500" />

    To share to Facebook you’ll need to link your account with Facebook Connect, and both Bing Maps and Photosynth.net upload options require a Windows Live ID.

    Here I’m going to upload to the Photosynth website as it’s probably the easiest way of viewing your panorama on a bigger screen, from anywhere on the web. After you’ve selected Upload To Photosynth.net hit Sign In Now. Enter your usual Live ID and choose a public display name before finalising your decision with Create then Upload.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/ip_uploadsynth.jpg" alt="iphone panoramic picture app" width="333" height="500" />

    To view the panorama on your PC sign in to Photosynth.net with your usual login. You’ll be taken to the My Photosynths area where you can select your newly uploaded creation ( class="vt-p" href="http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=14e609b7-a7ab-4a0c-81e7-10b1bd7637a4">here’s mine). You’ll need class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/microsoft-silverlight-geeks-weigh/">Microsoft Silverlight to view, though on my Ubuntu laptop the open source alternative Moonlight worked a treat.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/web_myphotosynths.jpg" alt="iphone panoramic picture app" width="580" height="190" />

    From the Photosynth website you can also class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-panorama-websites-360-degree-virtual-tour-world/">explore the community’s creations, and this can be time consuming as there’s so many great scenes on there. I wouldn’t recommend browsing the website if you have work to do, put it that way.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/web_panorama.jpg" alt="iphone panorama app" width="580" height="368" />

    Download

    Photosynth is currently only available for iOS, so if you’ve got a supported device you’re one of the lucky few. There is currently no evidence of an Android version in development, though we can always hope.

    • Microsoft Photosynth (iOS 4.0+ required) @ class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photosynth/id430065256?mt=8#">AppStore

    Conclusion

    I absolutely love Photosynth. Not only is it free, but it’s one of the most fun photography apps out there today. I’ve been using the app for weeks now and don’t remember a single crash, stitching is quick and the ability to quickly upload and share rocks. Not every panorama will turn out perfect but the more you practice the better they’ll get.

    I’m struggling to find a reason not to recommend this iPhone panorama app to everyone with an iPhone. Download it. Do it now.

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot3791.jpg" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="300" height="300" />Though Microsoft Word can sometimes feel like a big clunky program with too many bells and whistles, there are still some powerful time saving tools under its hood that you should know about. One of them is the Comments tool, which can be used sort of like little yellow sticky notes as you write, revise, and edit your research paper, manuscript, business report, or your next great novel.

    Comments in Word can serve many purposes, but they work like writing comments in the margins of a paper document. But of course, using Comments in Word, like other digital technology, provides a lot more than putting pen to paper. You can include external links to web resources, internal links to different parts of a document, and set up a pre-addressed email link for your readers. You can also send your Word file to someone or a group of people who in turn can add comments to your document.

    Adding Comments In Word 2011

    In Microsoft Word 2007-2011, you can add comments (when you’re writing in the Print Layout or Web Layout views) by first selecting one or more words in your document, and then clicking on Insert > New Comment in the menu bar. Note, I’m using Word 2011 for Mac for this tutorial, but the Comment tool and features are similar for the PC version of Word as well.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/newcomment.png" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="336" height="141" />

    You can of course access this tool in Word’s Toolbar, or what is called the Ribbon of Word 2010 or Mac 2011 edition, to create a new note using one single click. Or better yet, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-launch-any-windows-app-at-the-touch-of-a-button/">create a keyboard shortcut for the New Comment menu item (here’s how for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-secrets-of-mac-shortcuts/">Mac users).

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/makecomments.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="435" height="76" />

    When you add a note, you can write as much as you like in it. Your notes will appear as “balloons” on the side of the page where you selected to add the comment. All comments must be attached to piece of selected text. Comments are useful in the writing process for making notes to yourself, especially when you’re in the flow of writing and you don’t want to stop and check a fact or a resource. You can make a note to do it later.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/commentstoself.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="580" height="188" />

    You or another reader of your document could use Comments to ask questions, make suggested changes, or make references to other sources in your document. The comments you add don’t show up when you print your document.

    When your balloon comments get too distracting or take up too much precious space on the screen, you can simply click View > Markup to hide them. Do the same to bring them back. You can delete comments one at a time by clicking the “x” button in the upper-right of the Comment’s title bar.

    Adding Links To Comments

    URL Link

    What is useful about Comments is that you can include links to webpages, a mailto link, or links to designated parts of your existing document.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot378.png" border="0" alt="word 2007 comments" width="514" height="107" />

    To add to a URL, select a piece of text, and add a comment note. Next, either type in your URL or locate the webpage and drag the URL into the note.

    Mailto Link

    Sometimes when another reader or editor of your document is reading your added comments, you might want them to contact you directly by email concerning something you wrote in the document. Considering how lazy we computer users have become, Word enables you to include a mailto link in a comment or attach it directly to piece of text. That way, the lazy reader doesn’t have to stop and create a new mail and add your or someone else’s designated address. You can do it all that work for them.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mailto-1.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="580" height="430" />

    To add a mailto link, select the Comment box and go to Insert > Hyperlink, or Command+K.  In the dialogue box, enter the email address and subject line of the pre-addressed email. If you want to get more fancy, notice that little ScreenTip button above? You can type in a custom message to the reader when they hover their cursor over the resulting link.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mailto2.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="448" height="169" />

    Now when a reader clicks on the mailto link, a new email will open with your address and subject line inserted for them, so they don’t have to take their precious time doing it themselves.

    Document Link

    If you’re creating a long document, say a 150-page dissertation, you’ll know how unwieldy things can become when you need to find and locate important parts of your text file. You could use a comment in one part of your document to link to another part. However, the process for doing this requires a few more steps to set up.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muo2.png" border="0" alt="using comments in word 2007" width="344" height="358" />

    First off, you need to create a bookmark(s) link to your document. To do this, select the text for the bookmark, and go to Insert > Bookmark. Change the “OLE_Link1” to a custom name. Click Add.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/documentlink2.png" border="0" alt="Documentlink2" width="580" height="430" />

    When you want to add your document link in a comment or to a piece of selected text in your document, you need to click Insert > Hyper Link. Select the Document button. Click the Locate… button and your bookmarked anchor should be listed under bookmarks. Your bookmarked text will be highlighted in blue.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/muoscreenshot380.png" border="0" alt="Muoscreenshot380" width="391" height="355" />

    To remove hyperlinks, simply select the link and click Delete. Likewise, you can edit the Hyperlink by control-clicking on the link and choosing Insert > Edit Hyperlink.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/hyperlink3.png" border="0" alt="comments in word 2007" width="580" height="114" />

    Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 – An Advanced Calculator Tool That Students Love

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/calculator-title.png" alt="microsoft mathematics"/>Much to the chagrin of students and parents worldwide, it is not unheard of for graphing calculators to cost upwards of $100. Thanks to software, you have a full-featured graphing calculator that’s designed to work just like a hand-held calculator.

    With a simple program from Microsoft named href="http://www.microsoft.com/education/products/student/math/default.aspx#overview">Microsoft Mathematics 4.0, you have the full power of a graphing calculator – and more – right at your computer.

    Let’s go over some of the neat features this program provides and how it can help with homework or other math functions.

    When you launch the program you have an interface that is very similar to any other graphing calculator. You can enter your numbers and calculations directly into the program by either pressing the buttons with your mouse or just typing it in.

    id="more-67659"> /> Think of it as the built-in Windows ‘calc’ program on steroids.

    You can also draw your calculations and Mathematics will try to decipher your drawing into an equation. This is helpful if you receive an problem but don’t know exactly how to enter it into the program. It works fairly well, but does have some difficulty decoding some more complicated equations.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/drawing.png" alt="microsoft mathematics" width="235" height="201" />

    Of course the core of a graphic calculating program is the graphs it can make. Entering the equations into the “equation” portion of the program allows you to graph multiple lines on the same chart.

    Once you get used to the program, you can actually get very fancy with your graphs. Entering the right commands in the software will translate to a graph on the worksheet:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/worksheet.png" alt="microsoft mathematics 4.0" width="436" height="409" />

    Another interesting portion of the program is the equation solver. Once you type in an equation it will help you step through to solve it for one of the variables you have listed. After it is solved, you can then graph it in 2d or 3d to help visualize the equation and learn what it actually does.

    If you are interested in learning how you can apply Microsoft Mathematics to help your child or student learn mathematics, Microsoft offers this href="http://www.microsoft.com/education/teachers/guides/mathematics_4.0.aspx">free guide to give you learning ideas.

    The Equation Library built into the program also gets you started on some interesting ways you can enter data into the program.

    The final feature I’d like to go over is the Triangle Solver. The solver takes all of the legwork out of figuring out the remaining angles or length of a triangle and will also let you know exactly what type of triangle it is.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/triangle-solver.png" alt="microsoft mathematics" width="332" height="467" />

    On a personal note, when I was going through high school I relied heavily on a graphing calculator to do all of my work for me. Although I was very good at translating problems into a format the calculator can read, I ignored the underlying concepts which lead me to receive good grades, at least for the mean time. Once I went to college and was no longer able to use a calculator I had a very tough time adjusting. Please make sure to use this program responsibly and actually learn the underlying principles.

    Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 can be downloaded href="http://www.microsoft.com/education/products/student/math/default.aspx#overview">here and is free. It is only available for Windows, however if you have VirtualBox you will be able to run it on any other OS.

    Have you used Microsoft Mathematics before? Do you know of some alternative software you can use in place of it? Let us know in the comments below! />

    The 4 Best Free Alternatives To Microsoft PowerPoint

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/0-ppt-intro.jpg" alt="alternatives to powerpoint" width="300" height="225" />Do you create a lot of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/presentations/">presentations? If you do, you’re probably a master at PowerPoint, or Keynote if you own a Mac. Microsoft PowerPoint is the standard for slide presentation software and lays the blueprint from which all other applications are created. But what if you’re looking for something new or different?

    In this article, I’m going to show you the 4 best, free alternatives to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/powerpoint/">PowerPoint. If you’re looking for a new way to present your material without getting too far away from PowerPoint’s concept, you’ll find these apps useful. If you want to escape PowerPoint’s grasp once and for all, we can help you with that as well.

    id="more-60322">

    1. class="vt-p" href="https://docs.google.com/">Google Docs Presentation

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/1-ppt-google1.png" alt="alternatives to powerpoint" width="580" height="395" />

    My favorite alternative when it comes to replacing Microsoft applications is usually Google. You may already be familiar with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-docs/">Google Docs, but did you know you can create presentations with the web-based app? Just click on the Create new drop down menu and select Presentation to get started.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/2-ppt-google2.png" alt="free powerpoint alternative" width="474" height="374" />

    As you might imagine, this online application is very simple to use. You can change the theme and background of your presentation, insert text boxes, images, and videos, import slides, and all that good stuff. And since you’re using Google Docs, you can share your presentation with others and work on it collaboratively.

    2. class="vt-p" href="http://www.sliderocket.com/">SlideRocket

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/3-ppt-sliderocket.jpg" alt="like powerpoint but free" width="580" height="320" />

    SlideRocket is a higher end model of a collaborative, web-based presentation application. While this is a premium app, they do offer a nice free option, which gives you 250 MB of storage (15 MB file size), up to 5 multi-seat accounts, shared folders, items, and libraries, and the ability to import from Powerpoint and export to PDF.

    We covered SlideRocket in an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/make-beautiful-online-presentations-with-sliderocket/">article 2 years ago and it has only got better since then. It has a beautiful user interface and a lot of great features, including the ability to add themes, layouts, shapes, charts, tables, pictures, audio, video, and Flash animations. You can also integrate content from sites like Flickr and YouTube, as well as utilize plug-ins.

    To get a glimpse of SlideRocket, check out this short video:

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="351" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nija_9mLTPE?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="351" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nija_9mLTPE?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    3. class="vt-p" href="http://280slides.com/">280 Slides

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/4-ppt-280slides1.png" alt="like powerpoint but free" width="580" height="285" />

    280 Slides is another very easy to use presentation creation app. Last class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/build-show-presentations-online-with-280-slides/">covered back in March of ’09, 280 Slides offers a host of great features, like the ability to upload your existing PowerPoint presentations and import them into 280 Slides, preventing you from having to start over.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/5-ppt-280slides2.jpg" alt="like powerpoint but free" width="580" height="414" />

    Other great features include autosave and recovery, storing presentations online, downloading them in the PowerPoint 2007 format, adding photos and movies from Flickr and YouTube, posting to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/slideshare-find-share-powerpoint-presentations/">SlideShare and embedding, and running them straight from your browser.

    4. class="vt-p" href="http://prezi.com/">Prezi

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/6-ppt-prezi.jpg" alt="alternatives to powerpoint" width="400" height="266" />

    Prezi, if you haven’t heard of it by now, is one of those really cool presentation applications that is very different from how PowerPoint and the rest function. What makes it significantly different is the fact that it doesn’t invoke the traditional slide-by-slide rules of a normal presentation. Rather, each presentation you create is a flowing, motion-based depiction filled with your creativity.

    I’m not going to spend much time going over Prezi’s features because Simon did a fantastic job of that already in his class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/prezi-turning-dull-slideshows-revolutionary-dynamic-presentations/">article on Prezi back in February of this year. If you would like to view the official Prezi introduction video, however, have at it:

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="351" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pxhqD0hNx4Q?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="351" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pxhqD0hNx4Q?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Conclusion

    Are you over PowerPoint yet? I wasn’t lying when I said there were some good alternative apps out there. Explore these and you will find a bunch of great features and ways of presenting your material to others. The sharing abilities and integration with other services and file types give you a diverse set of options when deciding which tool would be best for the job.

    Another cool app that might be worth investigating from our directory is class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/spresent/">Spresent.
