If you receive any of the following errors while trying to boot up or during login phase, you probably have a corrupted Registry:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate System error: Lsass.exe When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.
Follow these steps to resolve such issue:
(Boot Method A – Using Windows Recovery console)
Insert your Windows CD into your computer and reboot. When it prompts you to “Press Any Key to Boot from CD”, press any key. When the screen appears that gives you the options to Setup, Repair or Quit, press R on your keyboard to enter repair mode. At the next screen select the installation of windows you would like to work on. For most people there will be only one option. When prompted enter your administrator password and press enter on your keyboard.
When you get the prompt, type “cd repair” (should be “c:\windows\repair”) to enter the directory where Registry backup are stored.
(Boot Method B – Using Reimage Boot-CD)
Build Reimage Boot CD. And after you are able to login, visit http://www.reimagepcrepair.com to run Reimage scan and Fix Reboot the PC using the Boot CD and reach Desktop
