PRTG Monitor – A Free Bandwidth Meter For PCs In Your Home Network

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/networkmonitor.png" alt="" />Have you ever been in a situation where your Internet is just dragging along, while you know that you’re the only person on your network, and you’re hardly using any bandwidth?

There are plenty of tools out there that will help you with analyzing your home network and assist you with increasing your Internet speeds on that network. You could use href="http://http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/have-you-ever-wondered-how-much-bandwidth-you-use-windows/">Networx, a tool Karl covered, to measure the individual bandwidth of each PC. You could go through some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/test-home-network-speed-decipher-results/">network speed tests that Matt described. Then you could follow Tina’s tips to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/break-the-speed-limits-to-your-internet/">increase your Internet speeds.

In this article, I’m going to offer you a very cool centralized solution that you can run on a single PC (or server), which will go out and monitor your entire network for traffic and performance issues.

Monitor Your Entire Network With PRTG Monitor

If you stop and think about it, to get a true measurement about the health of your network, you really need to monitor not only the traffic going in and out of just one PC on the network. You should also be constantly monitoring each connected device for any problems. Such problems could be recognizing when the CPU goes haywire, when network bandwidth stays pegged at the max, or any other factors that indicate there could be a virus or hacking involved.

The href="http://www.paessler.com/download/prtg">PRTG Monitor software is a commercial tool, but there is a great freeware version available to home users that provides monitoring for up to 10 “sensors”. For most home users, this is more than sufficient.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg1.png" alt="" width="578" height="428" />

You can run PRTG on more than one server for a “cluster” mode, but the easiest and fastest setup is to run it on one server in “standalone mode”.

The first screen you’ll see after you set up PRTG and launch the software, is the main menu where you can quickly access the major areas of the monitor software. This includes manually adding devices to monitor, reviewing status results in log files and reports, or having the software perform “network discovery” to locate any devices connected to your network.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg3.png" alt="" width="572" height="367" />

Manually adding devices lets you configure little details that the automatic discovery won’t do, like customizing the icon for that device or giving it a name that you will recognize.

All you have to do is type in the known network IP address for that device. At the top of the Network Monitor screen is where you’ll find the quick navigation bar. This is where you can go to view the sensor statuses, view all network alarms, reports and logs.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg4.png" alt="" width="470" height="525" />

The alarm area will show you all of the latest alarm messages for all of the devices on your network. These might include notifications that the CPU on a PC or device has gone through the roof, or the fact that the space on the C: drive is dangerously low. The system is looking for the sort of symptoms that indicate an unhealthy or infected system.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg5.png" alt="" width="579" height="216" />

Of course, if you scroll over to the right when you view the device status, you’ll see the last measured network bandwidth for that device as well – an important indicator that there may be a problem, or that you have someone on your network that’s stealing all of your bandwidth!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg5b.png" alt="" width="573" height="145" />

The “Live Data” graphs off to the right of the main display screen are my favorite part of the software. Here you can keep an eye on the CPU load, memory use and overall health of all of the devices on your home network. And if you don’t want to sit there monitoring everything all day, the software will log the data and provide you with graphs for different time intervals, like the last few days or the last month.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg6.png" alt="" width="573" height="333" />

The overview screen for each device is where you can get access to that information, as well as the log files, alarm notifications, and all of the realtime information for that device.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg7.png" alt="" width="578" height="359" />

You also get cool notification icons that highlight when there’s an active alarm or notification for any device on your network. Each icon has a different meaning – informational, warning, or alarm. Just click on the icon to see those notifications.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg8.png" alt="" width="483" height="444" />

If you want a closer view of the device behaviors, just click on any of the graphs and it’ll switch into full-screen mode. If you are the type of person that likes to have realtime statistics up on your screen (especially if you use an extended monitor) – go ahead and connect to the server remotely, and just display these graphs right on your screen (plus it looks really cool when people walk by…)

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg8b.png" alt="" width="578" height="507" />

The logs will provide you with a huge volume of system state changes, alarm notifications and just status reports about what’s going on throughout your network and from each device. I’ve never seen freeware that is quite this effective and useful when it comes to getting really valuable information about a network, or remotely monitoring device like this. I’m really impressed with this software.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg9.png" alt="" width="579" height="526" />

Try installing it on one of your more powerful home PCs and give it a try, or set up a dedicated server for monitoring your network health, and just let it run and log data. You may be surprised at what the software discovers, and what it tells you about where you may be losing bandwidth to runaway processes or infected computers.

Give it a shot and let us know how well it worked for your network. Did you learn anything new? Share your experiences with it in the comments section below.

5 Cool Twitter Search Tricks To Monitor What People Are Saying About You

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/twitter-reputation-management2.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" />If you own a website or are just trying to earn money online as a freelancer, it is always good to know what people are saying about you over the Internet. People may be citing you, sharing experiences about your services or recommending you. In any case, you may want to be there to answer any questions, make contacts, and so on.

One of the best tools to listen to online conversations is Twitter and here are a few actionable suggestions.

How Do You Create Twitter Feeds?

First, let’s make sure we know how to monitor Twitter search results using your favorite RSS reader. Each time you search, you create the feed link (you can see it in the right-hand column):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-07.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" width="550" height="242" />

Here are a few useful tips we have previously covered on having fun with RSS feeds, which you are likely to find useful for using the search tricks listed in this article:

  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/rss-feeds-work-simple-terms-technology-explained/">How RSS feeds work in simple terms
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-free-rss-readers-ipad/">Best free RSS readers for the iPad
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/edit-existing-rss-feeds-yahoo-pipes/">How to mix and edit existing RSS feeds with Yahoo! Pipes
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-unread-rss-feeds-tips/">Two easy tips to manage your unread RSS feeds better
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/blogtrottr-gmail-idevices-mail-app-read-rss-feeds-offline/">How to read RSS feeds on your iPad even when you’re offline

And now the actual tips on creating useful RSS feeds to track you and your business mentions on Twitter!

1. Reduce Any Clutter: Filter Out Retweets

While retweeting is great for expanding the reach of the update, retweets are actually one and the same message repeated again and again. Seeing multiple retweeted messages in your personal reputation management feed may result in one important update getting lost in the clutter.

Luckily Twitter search supports the – operator that lets you filter out all the updates containing a specific word from the search results:

["You (brand) name" -rt]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-01.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="311" />

2. Monitor Only Real Opinions: Filter Out Links

Let’s face it: most Twitter updates are aimed to share a link. If you blog a lot, your name (or moniker) is mostly mentioned on Twitter next to the post you have written. But do you want to only monitor “real” conversations?

Here’s a good way: Twitter supports the filter:links operator that searches only for tweets containing links. If we use the above mentioned trick, we’ll make it work vice versa excluding all linked updates from search results.

["You (brand) name" -filter:links]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-02.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="310" />

Similarly, you can also filter all updates referencing your Twitter username (you will be updated about these by Twitter itself via email or by your Twitter client):

[-from:username] – filters out all tweets coming from a user;

[-@username] – filters out all tweets referencing a user.

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-03.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="550" height="175" />

3. Monitor Negative Mentions

This tip is especially useful for e-commerce site owners and geeky customer support managers. You can focus on negative mentions by including src='http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> in the results.

["You (brand) name" src='http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> ]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-04.jpg" alt="tweets about you" width="550" height="310" />

4. Monitor Questions Mentioning You Or Your Business

Another great tip for service owners: you can create a separate feed to monitor all questions about you or your business name.

["Your (brand) name" ?] – make sure to use a space before the question mark.

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-05.jpg" alt="twitter search tricks" width="550" height="238" />

5. Include Your Name & Your Moniker(s) In Search Results

Lastly, here’s the easiest tip: you are most likely to be known by several names online: your name, username, site name, etc. You can include all these mentions in search results using OR operator:

["You business name" OR "Your name" OR "Your moniker]

Example

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/twitter-reputation-management-06.jpg" alt="Include all your brand mentions" width="550" height="391" />

Are you tracking your name mentions on Twitter! I hope I have inspired you to! Please let me know your thoughts!

Two Awesome Free Tools To Monitor & Verify Your Website [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/websiteup.png" alt="" />Owning a website seems like a terrific idea on paper. Produce a bunch of awesome articles that draw in huge crowds, lots of comments and discussion, and of course plenty of ad revenue. The last thing most people consider when thinking up the next great website is the work. Owning a popular website means regular server maintenance, closely monitoring the health and uptime of your web server, and keeping track of the health of your internal and external links. After your website traffic starts to multiply, sometimes those monitoring and maintenance tasks start to consume more time than you ever anticipated.

Once I realized that I needed these tools, the first place I turned to was MUO. At first I thought that maybe using one of the apps that href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-monitor-websites-that-dont-have-rss-feeds/">Aibek listed to monitor sites might work. Unfortunately those would only tell me whenever one of my writers had updated the site. I wanted something along the lines of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/pingdom-monitor-website-downtime/">Pingdom, but that particular tool only allows you to monitor one website under the free account.

Eventually, I discovered a couple of tools available from href="http://www.iannet.org/apps.php">IanNet that did exactly what I was looking for – one that would automatically monitor all of my websites, and another that would monitor the health of all internal and external URL links. Those tools are href="http://www.sitesmonitor.net/">SiteMonitor and href="http://www.iannet.org/apps/SiteVerify/">SiteVerify.

The Importance of Monitoring Your Website

The one thing I cannot stress enough when it comes to “optimizing” your website for Google these days is the importance of server health. Carefully optimized keywords and topics are still important, but the site should also be fast-loading, have excellent up-time, and have no broken links.

Using SiteMonitor To Monitor Uptime

The first thing I did when I discovered SiteMonitor was to set it up to run on my personal home web server. This PC, which is always running, is a good starting point to go out and ping my websites at regular intervals every day. When you first run the app, it looks somewhat simple, but the usefulness of the program quickly becomes apparent once you start using it.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor1.png" alt="" width="573" height="393" />

The first thing you’ll want to do is start adding the websites to monitor. Just click the blue “Add” button, and a popup window will appear for the details you need to include. The ping actually looks for a segment of text within the HTML response, so you’ll need to view the source code and pick some text that the page always returns. Many people just use the <title> text for this.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor3.png" alt="" width="579" height="471" />

The program also includes functionality for a secure connection (https) and TCP. Once you’ve added one or more sites, you can manually run a test using the green “Check Selected” button. Or you can use the “Check All” button next to it to test all of your sites at once.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor4.png" alt="" width="573" height="393" />

When you do a manual check, you’ll get a pop-up confirmation that the connection to the web server went through okay.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor5.png" alt="" width="563" height="381" />

You’ll also see the page-load time for that URL. Most people typically only use this app to check the main page of their website, but there’s nothing stopping you from entering additional URLs and testing various pages of your site as well.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor4a.png" alt="" width="512" height="174" />

You may want to keep the standard Google entry as a baseline for your own site. If your page-load time is almost as good or better than Google, you’re probably running a fairly healthy server setup.

Best of all (and this is my favorite feature of this program), you can configure the program to check your website at a set interval, and if there’s a problem you can configure it to email you, or send an SMS.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor6.png" alt="" width="435" height="431" />

This is an awesome tool if you really want your website visitors to have the best possible experience, and are really concerned about any downtime at all. This software will let you know instantly so that you can call tech support and get the issue resolved immediately.

Use SiteVerify To Qualify Your Links

As I mentioned earlier, another really important maintenance task when you own a popular website is to always monitor for broken links. Internal page changes can create broken links without knowing it. Also, external sites may disappear off the net, causing broken external links. This is where SiteVerify comes in handy.

All you have to do is type in the URL of your top-level domain, and then click “Start“. The software will start crawling through your website, checking links at whatever depth you defined in the “Traverse” setting. Keep this at “1″ for the fastest check (individual links).

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor7.png" alt="" width="577" height="453" />

The software will quickly dig out all links throughout your website, and then it will start plugging through the list and validating your links. The test I ran above was for all internal links, but you can check the box for external links – but be warned that the scan will take significantly longer.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/sitemonitor8.png" alt="" width="325" height="299" />

Once the scan is done, you can send the final results to a text file by choosing “Export List” from the file menu, and you can also use SiteVerify to create a Sitemap for your website.

Verifying links is an important thing that I would recommend any webmaster should do at least once a month at the very minimum. By monitoring your uptime and your page load speed, as well as maintaining the health and integrity of all of your internal and external links, you’ll ensure that your site is considered by both search engines and your visitors, as one of the best-quality sites on the Internet.

Give these website monitoring tools a try and see if it catches any problems with your website. Do you find them valuable as a website owner? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

3 Tools To Monitor Google’s “Past 24 Hours” Search Results Pages

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track.jpg" alt="recent searches" />Google offers quite a few options to monitor recent news and updates. We have class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/google-alerts/">Google Alerts (that allow you to subscribe via email and RSS) and various ways to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-uses-of-google-alerts-for-a-freelancer/">have fun with the tool. We also have class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/google-news/">Google News that can deliver news results to your email address or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-interesting-ways-google-news-rss-feeds/">feed reader. Furthermore, we have class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/blogsearch">Google Blog Search that also generates RSS links for you to track new blog posts around your search term(s).

However, sadly, none of the above options are perfect and none of them are as good as regular Google search “web” results. The Google Alerts tool has no option to only get results from “Web” (these results are only included in the “Everything” option), the Google News index is much smaller than the general index and Google Blog Search is too spammed.

Therefore, the best way to monitor recent pages indexed by Google around your search term (which can be your business or personal brand name, your favorite website or even your town, if you are, for example, a local journalist), is to scan daily through “Past 24 hours” search results:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-01.jpg" alt="recent searches" width="550" height="380" />

Here are a few tools that both track pages on Google’s search results and remind you to check that page regularly (via email or browser update):

1. Track Engine

class="vt-p" href="http://trackengine.com/servlets/com.nexlabs.trackengine.ui.Login">Track Engine is the oldest tool I am aware of that lets you track results on any page and delivers you the changes via email). I’ve been using it for ages to monitor recent web mentions of my personal projects or name. The free version of the tool lets you track 5 pages which have proved enough for me.

When adding a new page (“bookmark”) to monitor you can:

  • Set how often you want to track the page (from once in two hours to once a week);
  • Set the tool to highlight the changes on a page;
  • Set the color to highlight the changes;
  • Track changes to particular page elements (hyperlinks, images, numbers or dates);
  • Disable tracking during weekends or weekdays;

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-02.jpg" alt="recent searches on google" width="566" height="524" />

Here is a sample of results delivered to your inbox:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-03.jpg" alt="recent searches on google" width="508" height="514" />

2. Update Scanner (Firefox)

class="vt-p" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/update-scanner/">Update Scanner is another option that can help you class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-monitor-websites-that-dont-have-rss-feeds/">monitor websites that do not offer an RSS or email subscription option. It reminds you to check out the changes via the browser alert.

To add a page to the scanner, right click on it and select “Scan Page for Updates“. In the dialog you can specify:

  • How often you want the page to be scanned for changes;
  • How huge the change should be for it to be highlighted (for example, you can ignore all changes which are less than 100 characters):

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-04.jpg" alt="recent searches on google" width="399" height="398" />

Here is a sample of Google search results scanned:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-07.jpg" alt="all recent searches" width="550" height="340" />

3. Page Monitor (Google Chrome)

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/track-website-page-monitor-chrome/">Page Monitor is a valuable option for Google Chrome users. Like the above one, it also sends updates via browser alerts.

For each new added page, you can:

  • Set how often you want the page scanned;
  • Select the specific part of the page to track (via the “Pick” button in the “Advanced” section)
  • Enable sound notifications;
  • Enable desktop alerts.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-05.jpg" alt="all recent searches" width="550" height="187" />

Here is a sample of Google search results scanned:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/past-24-track-06.jpg" alt="recent searches" width="550" height="274" />

Monitor How SEO-Optimized Your Site Is With SEO Panel

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo22.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" />Most SEO experts out there have come to recognize how humbling the field of search engine optimization can be. Just when you put together a series of rules or techniques that work well, Google up and turns the world upside down. The nice thing about optimizing a site however is that most of the really important core issues still matter, even after Google makes any change – whether it’s big or small.

How well your site will do really still depends on a wide variety of factors, but most importantly your keyword usage, the quality of your site – including number of broken links and well-written content, and also toward the top of the list are backlinks from other high quality sites.

So you believe that you’re doing all of this, but you’re really not sure. Sure, some of your pages rank toward the top of Google listings, but how do you know how well your site is optimized as a whole? Obviously, one way to do it is to create a checklist and go through your site one page at a time. Of course, if you’re like me and hate that kind of grunt work, then you’ll be as pleased as I was to discover class="vt-p" href="http://www.seopanel.in/download/">SEO Panel.

Installing SEO Panel

What’s SEO Panel? It’s a high-quality, free PHP-based app that you can use to audit your entire website, or even your competitor’s websites, for the leading SEO issues that most experts agree really matter. This is somewhat similar to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/traffic-travis-free-seo-management-tool/">Traffic Travis, another SEO tool that I’ve reviewed.

Before you can start using the app, you’re going to need a web server where you can install it. On my case, I installed it on my class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/setting-up-multiple-portable-xampp-webservers-usb-drive/">locally installed Xampp web server, but you can download and copy the files to the public area of any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed and enabled.

Make sure that the config/sp-config.php file and the tmp directory is writable by everyone. Then, just open up a browser and go to the /seopanel/install/ directory. In my case it would be http://localhost/seopanel/install/

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo1.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" width="491" height="341" />

When you run the installation, it will check your server to make sure everything it needs is installed and enabled.  Odds are that you may receive the “CURL Support” error above, especially if you’ve set up your own web server. CURL is usually easy enough to enable just by going to the php.ini file on your web server’s PHP installation and removing the “;” from the .dll file extension.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo2.png" alt="seo optimized" width="279" height="187" />

Now when you launch the install script, you should see the following screen.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo3.png" alt="seo optimized" width="488" height="326" />

Don’t forget to change permissions on /config/sp-config.php so that not everybody has write permission. In the next step, you’ll be in the admin panel. The default login is spadmin/spadmin.

The first step, once you’re in the SEO Panel is to set up the websites that you want to monitor. Just click to add a new website and fill in the details.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo4.png" alt="seo optimized" width="579" height="599" />

Once you’re done, you’ll see all of your configured and activated websites in the Website Manager area. You can see just from the picture above how many features this application has, including class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-seo-report-website-seorush/">reports, SEO analysis tools, keyword reports and more.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo5.png" alt="seo panel" width="474" height="320" />

When you click on the reports manager, you’ll have the opportunity to request a full analysis of your system based on criteria like current search engine rank, search engine saturization, and number of quality backlinks to your website.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo6.png" alt="seo panel" width="428" height="356" />

You’ll get a really good overview of the websites you want to follow when you click on the “SEO Panel” link on the main menu bar.  The account summary that shows up will provide current search engine ranks, backlinks, and indexed pages.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo7.png" alt="seo panel" width="531" height="350" />

Next, click on “Keyword Position Checker” and you’ll discover a list of tools that make it a lot easier to determine whether your keyword efforts are currently good enough. One of my favorite tools is the keyword “position” checker. Just choose the search engine you want to use, type in a keyword or phrase that you’d like your site to rank highly for, and click Proceed.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo8.png" alt="" width="578" height="461" />

Just scroll down the listings, and if you see any highlighted entries, then that’s a page from the site that you’re currently monitoring with the SEO tool. This is a fast and easy way to see if you rank at all well for the topics you are trying to focus on with your site.

Another invaluable tool in this PHP program is the “Auditing” area. This section lets you run audits against any website, and will reveal statistics about any site. Just choose the audit types you want to perform and let the system do the work for you.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo9.png" alt="" width="512" height="513" />

When you do a full audit, be prepared to wait a long time as SEO Panel actually crawls through the entire site to analyze and report back with the relevant data. Each page gets its own line of statistics, and you’ll be able to clearly see which pages on your site have the lowest scores and need the most work.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo10.png" alt="search engine optimized seo" width="578" height="451" />

A lot of people get pretty frustrated when it comes to SEO. It seems inconceivable that certain techniques will actually increase your ranking, but it’s true. The SEO Panel app gives you a place to turn when you just don’t know where your site stands. Looking closely at the reports and audits will show you where your site is really bleeding, and how to go about giving it SEO first aid.

So give SEO Panel a try and see if it gives you any new insight into how you can improve your website. Share your experiences with it in the comments section below.

    Monitor Access & Guard Your Android Privacy With LBE Privacy Guard

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/lbelogo.png"/>One of the biggest reasons that I liked the idea of getting an Android phone was the entire concept of an operating system protected from viruses or other malicious software, thanks to the fact that installed apps don’t have root access to the OS.

    However, it didn’t take long before I wanted to enable root access so that I could install and run even more apps. The problem that arises is that once you’ve opened up that vulnerability, there is always the risk that you could accidentally install malicious software.

    We’ve covered a number of security apps for the Android, such as my article on href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mobile-defense-free-mobile-phone-tracking-system-android/">Mobile Defense, and Matt’s article on whether you need href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antivirus-android-phone-geeks-weigh/">antivirus protection for your Android.  However, vulnerability on any smartphone doesn’t only come just from possible viruses. It also comes from the potential that malicious software could hijack your data connection, sending emails without your knowledge, or hijacking your cellular account and sending SMS messages or making calls without your permission.

    Protect Yourself With LBE Privacy Guard

    When you first install the href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security&feature=search_result">LBE Privacy Guard, you’ll see all of the apps that are currently set as monitored and trusted. You can not only protect yourself from viruses, but you can monitor every access point in and out of your phone.

    In this way, the app goes far beyond “antivirus” software – it’s not necessarily protecting your phone from malicious software as it is monitoring all access points and letting you know exactly what’s going on with your phone. /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor1.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" /> /> When you first run the software, all apps are set up as “monitored apps.” If you click on “Trusted Apps”, you’ll see that starting out only LBE Privacy Guard is included. Any application placed in this category is not monitored at all, so choose carefully!

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor2.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    On the main menu, you’ll see all of the categories that the LBE Privacy Guard can monitor and control in order to protect your privacy. Categories include location sharing, financial information, your phone contacts and data, and much more. If the apps don’t have permissions enabled in these categories, then they aren’t sending or receiving data.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor3.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Click on PIM Access Manager to view apps that currently have permissions to send or receive SMS messages from your phone or to otherwise access your cellular phone line.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor4.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    If you click on any of these applications, you’ll see that you have three choices when setting permissions – either permit access, reject access, or require the application to prompt you for permission every time access is attempted.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor5.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    As you can see, all of the apps have the default setting of prompting required. This is a good setting to start out with, because you can see which apps you have running frequently access which data services. If you see any surprises, you can disable the apps that you didn’t know were accessing your services.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor6.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Other categories you’ll want to check out include things like location information (which apps have access to your GPS coordinates). Obviously this would be a significant privacy concern if there’s some app sharing your location details that you don’t know about.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor7.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    Then there are apps that have access to your Internet/data connection. If you really want to keep close tabs on all data going in and out of your phone (especially if you are on a metered data plan), then this LBE Privacy Guard can be a real life saver.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor8.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    To change permission settings for any specific app, from the main menu select “App Management” and then click on the app that you want to modify. On the app permission screen, you can add or remove the requested access that the application wants to use, or you can choose to enable “Trust” to make it a “trusted application.”

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/androidmonitor9.png" alt="" width="281" height="500" />

    A trusted application is one that not only has permissions to access your phone services that it wants to access, but it isn’t even monitored or logged by LBE Privacy Guard at all.  This is a good option for any applications that you absolutely know you can trust, like Gmail or Evernote.

    If you’ve noticed your phone running more slowly, or you have higher access charges on your bill than you expected, enable LBE Privacy Guard and give it a try. See if it comes up with any surprising applications that request access to your phone’s services.

    Let us know what you think of the app. And if you know of any other useful antivirus apps or connection monitoring apps like this one for Android phones, share your insight in the comments section below! />

    2 Ways To Monitor Tweets Within Your Twitter Network

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-06.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" />Twitter is a well-known and well-used source of instant hot news and trending topics. It’s huge and is able to spread news in real time. We have listed lots of tools to monitor href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/12-websites-show-hottest-twitter-topics/">hottest Twitter topics, find href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-content-matters-twitter-part-1/">important content and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-websites-show-hottest-twitter-topic/">track popular news.

    However being huge and powered by real people, Twitter is also hugely cluttered. It is almost impossible to find one’s way around thousands of tweets and retweets. The only way to give this stream of updates a meaning is to only listen to people that matter to you: people you follow for a reason. Here are a collection of tools that will help you track down the news within your Twitter network.

    1. Updates Retweeted By Your Friends

    “Old-style” retweets (also referred to as “manual” as opposed to href="http://support.twitter.com/entries/77606-what-is-retweet-rt">Twitter-RT functionality) have long been an effective source of trending topics. If a story gets retweeted and cited, it must be a hot story. But are you really that interested in any hot topic discussed online?

    If you’ve been smart enough to create a relevant circle of friends on Twitter, you are likely to share similar interests with people you follow. So here are two ways to find out what people you care about retweet daily:

    Tweeted Times

    href="http://tweetedtimes.com/">Tweeted Times is a social media tool to create an easy-to-scan newspaper of your Twitter timeline. You can create a digest based on your own Twitter stream, any Twitter list and / or Twitter search results.

    The tool ranks the updates based on how many of your friends and friends of your friends have retweeted the news.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-01.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" width="499" height="459" />

    Updated: hourly.

    Tracking tools: You can read the newspaper online or use your preferred RSS reader to track your newspaper feed. You can also set up the tool to automatically share top stories and promote your newspaper from your Twitter account.

    FeedEra

    href="http://feedera.com/">FeedEra is another tool that creates a digest of your friends’ retweets. The tool ranks the stories using its “FeedScore” which is said to aggregate data from Twitter, Topsy, bit.ly and other powerful sources. All the updates are broken into stories, photos, videos and music.

    class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-74941" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-05.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="327" />

    Updated: daily (email digest) and live (online digest).

    Tracking tools: Get a digest in your inbox every morning with the best of your feed.

    In your settings you can also maintain a blacklist of domains and annoying Twitter friends you don’t want to be included in the digest:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-02.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="230" />

    Besides subscribing to your friends’ popular stories, you can also subscribe to any Twitter list update (the list should not necessarily be created by you).

    2. Updates “Favorited” By Your Friends

    Whereas retweeting spreads the word further, “favoriting” saves it for further reference (sort of a sharing versus bookmarking functionality). Most of your friends are likely to star Twitter updates to save most useful posts, so you may consider looking into what they like.

    I wasn’t able to find any good tool that would create a digest of what all your friends favorite. Instead, there are a few ways to create an aggregated RSS feed of your friends’ favorite Twitter updates:

    Favebytes

    href="http://favebytes.com/">Favebytes is a quick, registration-free web-based application that creates an OPML file from your friends’ favorites. Outline Processor Markup Language (OPML) is the traditional format for RSS aggregators to import and export the subscription list. This means you can use the OPML file created by Favebytes to import your friends’ favorite feeds to almost any feed reader.

    Here’s the sample of my OPML file imported by Google Reader:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-03.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="229" />

    Updated: live (powered by Twitter built-in Twitter favorites feeds).

    Tracking tools: Most RSS readers.

    2. Yahoo! Pipes

    There are a few promising pipes that aggregate your Twitter friends’ favorites – here are href="http://pipes.yahoo.com/earth2marsh/twitter_friends_favorites">two href="http://pipes.yahoo.com/xverges/friendsfavs">of them. If you are ready to cope with frequent Yahoo! Pipes slowness, that can be a good solution.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-04.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" width="550" height="354" />

    Updated: live (powered by Twitter built-in Twitter favorites feeds).

    Tracking tools: Online interface or any RSS reader.

    href="http://www.favewits.com/">Favewits.com is another online tool based on Yahoo! Pipes but I found it even slower. There’s also  href="http://favorious.com/">Favorious that lets you have various sorts of fun with Twitter favorites including your viewing your friends’ favorite timeline – but I wasn’t able to get it working properly.

    From what I have seen, the above two tools only grab updates from ~100 people you most recently followed, so if you follow more users, these cannot be complete solutions.

    Any other good tips on how to track only meaningful Twitter updates that really matter to you? Please let us know in the comments!

    Monitor Craigslist While You Search The Web With CraigZilla [Firefox]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla21.png" alt="monitor craigslist" />I have to admit that I really love Craigslist. I’m not sure I could ever explain why such a poorly designed, massive and hulking mess of a classified ad system would become so immensely popular around the world, but there’s no getting around the fact that it is. When you want to find something to buy or sell, need a service like a carpenter or a nanny, or you just want to find out where the local yard sales are, Craigslist is the place that can help better than even most local community event or bulletin boards.

    Here at MUO, we’ve covered a lot of different search tools and methods to dig through Craigslist. I first touched on searching Craigslist with a desktop app called href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/simplifying-craigslist-with-the-craigslist-reader/">Craigslist Reader. Unfortunately the app didn’t stay entirely free for long. Then there are the various search engines like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/crazedlistsearch-multiple-craigslist-cities/">CrazedList, and lots of other tools that let you plug into the massive ad board, like the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-mashups-to-make-craigslist-even-more-useful/">5 tools David covered a while back.

    Monitor Craigslist With A Firefox Add-On

    While a dedicated desktop Craigslist client is something that I like to use when I’m trying to do a deep query of Craigslist, I also don’t want to keep extra software running all the time for scheduled searches to monitor Craigslist changes. I also like using Craiglist search engines, but again, they don’t always have the same features as an application, and most can’t do the scheduled searches that give you a competitive advantage with things like buying rare collectibles or spotting job opportunities.

    So I was pleased to discover href="http://www.studioshorts.com/projects/CraigZilla/">CraigZilla, a Craigslist search tool that runs embedded right inside Firefox. You don’t have to run any additional hardware and you don’t have to visit any website. Craigzilla will run in your Firefox browser and alert you any time there are new Craiglist listings that match your search criteria.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla1.png" alt="monitor craigslist" width="567" height="504" />

    When you first install the CraigZilla plugin, the first thing you’ll want to do is go into the options (in the Firefox add-on list) and set up how often you want the tool to check Craigslist for new listings that meet your search criteria, as well as the search location (yes, unfortunately you can only choose one).

    You’ll also notice in the preferences window that there are tabs for the various feed categories. You can select any categories that you want CraigZilla to monitor and alert you whenever there are any new additions. I wouldn’t suggest selecting “All” unless you want constant notification. However, if there are some categories that you’re always on the lookout for, this is a really effective way to stay on top of the latest listings.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla2.png" alt="firefox craigslist addon" width="500" height="517" />

    The Job Feeds are also a powerful tool for any job hunter because you’ll be alerted instantly whenever a new ad is placed within your field or industry. For service providers, like freelancers or contractors, this is probably one of the easiest ways to identify new leads and opportunities just about every day.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla3.png" alt="firefox craigslist addon" width="579" height="539" />

    If you’re house hunting or apartment hunting, there’s also a Housing Feed where you can monitor new ads published to the category of real estate you’re interested in. As any house or apartment hunter knows, being the first to make that phone call can sometimes mean the difference between getting a place or having it slip through your fingers.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla4.png" alt="firefox craigslist addon" width="577" height="259" />

    If you’re a head hunter or someone that constantly needs new hired help, the Services Feeds section is a good place to start. Constantly need laborers? Select the Labor/Move category. Always in search of writers? Select the Write/Ed/Trans category. You’ll get alerted any time someone new places an ad that they are available for work.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla5.png" alt="craigslist add on" width="519" height="356" />

    When you’re done configuring your feeds, you’ll see the CraigZilla icon appear in the lower right corner of the screen. This is where you’ll be able to quickly access all of the new Craigslist listings, and it’s also where notifications will pop-up.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla6.png" alt="craigslist add on" width="184" height="105" />

    If you don’t add any filters, you can view all of the latest Craigslist ads in a category by right clicking the CraigZilla icon and then left-clicking on the category that you want to see. Only the categories you selected in the Preferences will show up.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla7.png" alt="craigslist add on" width="554" height="600" />

    In the online reviews for CraigZilla, I read that one person had difficulty getting the filters to work, so I decided to test it out myself. You can add filters in the Preferences by typing in words in the Filter fields for that category.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla8.png" alt="" width="311" height="237" />

    Now, whenever listings with your filter show up, you’ll get a notification, and you can hover your mouse over the icon to get a quick view of those new listings that match your filter. As far as I can tell, it works like a charm!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla9.png" alt="" width="308" height="331" />

    When you click into the category to view the newest listings, you’ll see the ads that match your filter highlighted with an underline.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/craigzilla10.png" alt="monitor craigslist" width="522" height="481" />

    CraigZilla is one of those add-ons that I’m confident I’m going to keep using for as long as it’s available. I’m far too busy to be bothered to go back to Craigslist all the time to search for new opportunities, and I have way too many applications already running on my PC to launch yet another one. CraigZilla solves that dilemma by running in the background on your browser and alerting you whenever anything of interest shows up in the listings.

    If you’re an avid Craigslist user, give the Firefox CraigZilla plugin a try and let us know what you think. Did it do everything you wanted? Were any useful features missing? Share your insight in the comments section below. />

    7 Important Things To Know When Buying An LCD Monitor

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD01.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" width="300" height="195" />Are you tired of your old computer monitor and in dire need of a new one? Maybe you should make yourself familiar with LCD computer monitors. LCD stands for style="text-decoration: underline;">liquid style="text-decoration: underline;">crystal style="text-decoration: underline;">display and are also known as flatscreens.

    LCDs have been used for a while, for example in digital clocks and laptops. In recent years they have become a standard for desktop monitors. During the same time, LCDs have also conquered the TV market.

    Flatscreen monitors are much thinner and lighter than CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors. They also require less energy, emit no electromagnetic radiation, and the technology enables clearer images, higher resolutions, and a flicker-free display, which is easier on the eyes.

    id="more-53413"> /> These are only a few key arguments to finally replace the old CRT monitor. This article explains the various features of monitors in general and flatscreens in specific. It will help you understand what you should watch out for when buying a new LCD computer monitor.

    Screen Size

    The screen size is measured in inches, diagonally from the bottom left to the upper right corner of the display. Available sizes range from 15″ to 30″. The most common size for a desktop monitor today is 19″ to 22″, but it is not uncommon to buy larger sizes.

    Bigger sizes usually means you will have more room on your desktop. You might finally be able to view multiple open windows in parallel. However, bigger monitors also take up more space on your desk and they tend to be more expensive.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD04.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" width="580" height="245" />

    Aspect Ratio

    Aspect ratio describes the relative number of horizontal to vertical pixels in a display. Standard CRT monitors were almost square with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Today, you will find widescreen monitors that have aspect ratios like movie theater screens, i.e. 16:9 or 16:10. 16:9 is also called HD (high definition).

    If you’re watching DVDs on your computer, you can avoid the black bars across your screen with a widescreen display. Wide ratios are also the most convenient solution for viewing multiple windows in parallel. The only reasons to go with 4:3 is that you either prefer it for some reason or you don’t have sufficient space on your desk for a wider monitor.

    Resolution

    Resolution is the number of pixels displayed horizontally and vertically. Due to the nature of LCD technology, flatscreens have only one optimized or native resolution. Hence, their native resolution describes the absolute number of pixels present horizontally and vertically.

    Unlike CRT monitors, using a lower than native resolution on a flatscreen, leads to fuzzy images. Hence it is important to choose the right native resolution from the start as you can not change it, unless you accept a loss of image quality.

    Higher resolutions mean sharper images, higher clarity, and more desktop space. This is perfect if you multitask or enjoy to watch movies on your computer. On the other hand, text become much smaller and harder to read. Thus a high resolution is to be avoided if your eyesight is less than perfect.

    Crunch Gear has produced a great comparison chart of aspect ratios and available resolutions. Click the respective links for the class="vt-p" title="Cruch Gear Article" href="http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/12/09/handy-chart-for-understanding-aspect-ratio-and-resolution/">article or the class="vt-p" title="Aspect Ratio and Resolution Chart" href="http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/799px-aspect_ratios_and_resolutionssvg.png">full size image.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD02.png" border="0" alt="lcd monitor" width="580" height="437" />

    Contrast Ratio

    Contrast ratio describes the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black the LCD computer monitor can display. Higher contrast ratios equal whiter whites and blacker blacks, as well as a greater degree of gray values in between. The best contrast ratio you can get is 1,000 : 1.

    Contrast ratio is a difficult topic. You cannot really compare the values between different manufacturers. Also, sometimes you will find the term dynamic contrast, which is not the same as contrast ratio and can be deceiving.

    Brightness

    LCD monitors are illuminated by several backlights. Brightness is measured in candelas per square meter (cd/m2). A higher rating of at least 300 cd/m2, i.e. higher brightness, is to be desired if you want to watch movies or play games on your computer. For office work and browsing a lower rating of 200 – 250 cd/m2 is fine.

    Viewing Angle

    The higher the viewing angle, the better people who look at the monitor from the side will be able to see its display. Compared to CRTs, LCDs have a limited viewing angle. However, this feature is only interesting if you expect yourself or guests to look at your monitor with an angle. You can ignore it if you’re always going to sit straight in front of your monitor.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD05.png" border="0" alt="lcd monitor" width="580" height="181" />

    Ports

    All this time I’ve only been talking about the display and the LCD technology. But a monitor is more than just a display. It needs to be connected to a computer and possibly other devices. Hence, you need to know what type of port you will need and then make sure the monitor has it. Most importantly, check which connector your video card supports.

    Here is a brief overview of the most common ones:

    • DisplayPort /> The latest digital display interface, produced since 2008.
    • HDMI /> style="text-decoration: underline;">High- style="text-decoration: underline;">Definition style="text-decoration: underline;">Multimedia style="text-decoration: underline;">Interface, a digital audio/video interface produced since 2003.
    • DVI /> style="text-decoration: underline;">Digital style="text-decoration: underline;">Video style="text-decoration: underline;">Interface, the first digital video interface. Produced to replace VGA since 1999.
    • VGA /> style="text-decoration: underline;">Video style="text-decoration: underline;">Graphics style="text-decoration: underline;">Array, the old analog connector, first produced in 1987.

    The image below shows the ports mentioned above. From left to right: DisplayPort (blue), HDMI (black), VGA (white), and DVI (white).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/LCD03.png" border="0" alt="lcd computer monitors" />

    In addition to these you may find component video, S-video, and composite video connectors.

    I didn’t go into class="vt-p" title="LCD Monitor Response Time" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Response_time_%28technology%29">response time, which can be neglected, and class="vt-p" title="LCD Panel Technology" href="http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php">panel technology, which basically doesn’t matter if you make up your mind about the above features.

    To summarize, you should first pick a desired size, aspect ratio, and resolution. These characteristics should meet your needs. In the next step you can compare all available models for further features, most importantly contrast ratio, brightness, and available ports. Finally, the price will decide which model you can afford.

    What is the most important factor for you when buying an LCD computer monitor?

    Dual Monitor Setup on Mac OS X

    live.pirillo.com – I’ve been using the dual 30″ monitors with my Vista machine, hooked up with Dual Link DVI cables. Someone in chat suggested I use one of them for the MacBook Pro. With these new MBP’s, it’s quite easy. Just plug in one of the DVI cables, and off you go… or so I thought.

    3 Laptop Computer Temperature Monitor Apps That Could Save Your Hard Drive

    As computers have become such a big part of our everyday lives, we have grown to expect faster and faster desktops and laptops for our daily activities. One of the problems with those fast processors and hard drives is that since they have to fit more power into increasingly smaller spaces, they end up reaching very high temperatures — which if not monitored and kept under control, can play havoc with your computer.

    Overheating is one of the leading causes of hard drive failure. Other symptoms such as slowness, unresponsive programs and crashes and random reboots can sometimes be attributed to overheating as well.

    When a processor fails, it is an expensive repair. However, when a hard drive fails, the costs of losing your data can be much, much higher. So what can you do to protect your laptop? Here are a few tools that could help you.

    Real Temp

    Real Temp is a comprehensive monitor that reads temperature information from all Intel Core processors and even allows you to calibrate the sensors for each individual CPU in dual- or quad-processor machines. And unlike many other sensors, it works equally well on laptops and desktops. Real Temp runs without installation being necessary. It can just be extracted to a folder or external drive and run directly from those places.

    It comes preset with default max temperatures for each configuration, which can be easily adjusted; and also with an option for an alarm to go off if the temperature reaches dangerous levels.

    Core Temp

    Core Temp is one of the sensors that encompasses most of Intel’s and AMD’s CPUs, and it works on Windows XP Service Pack 2, 2003 Server, Vista and Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). One of the useful tools includes the ability to log your information, which is very helpful when analyzing the temperature of the laptop over long periods of time and detect whether some fluctuations are normal or a sign of trouble.

    SpeedFan

    SpeedFan is a lightweight and reliable temperature monitor, which has the added bonus of also monitoring (as the name suggests) the speed of the fans, since they are an important part of the health of your computer.

    It can be set to monitor your hard drive’s temperature, the CPU temperature and the general internal temperature of the computer. SpeedFan is an interesting program that allows you to do a lot but it doesn’t work on every laptop model due to the fact that the fans on every laptop are configured differently. In some models, the temperature is available but most other functions are not. In spite of that, it does serve as a reliable monitor for the internal temperature of the computer even when some of the other features are not available; and a good detection system to warn you when certain problems arise. It can be set to run on startup and sound an alarm if the temperature gets too high.

    There are many computer issues that are difficult to diagnose and correct, but thankfully, high temperatures isn’t one of them. It should be one of the things to check if you start experiencing sluggishness and hard drive errors. All it takes is a little bit of attention and one of the programs above, and the problem can be corrected before it becomes an issue.

    Have you experienced overheating? What kind of symptoms did you experience? How did you fix it? Let us know by writing a comment below.
