5 More Top Quality Free To Play Online Multiplayer Games [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro6.jpg" alt="free online multiplayer games" />Continuing the tradition of tirelessly hunting down href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">quality href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-sites-where-you-can-download-old-pc-games-for-free-nb/">free href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-awesome-free-opensource-games-enjoy-windows-mac-linux/">timewasters, today we’re highlighting some great free to play href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/online-games/">online games. If you spend much of your time in-game, casting spells or crouching to avoid a shower of bullets we’ve got you covered in this article.

Don’t forget to check out the minimum system requirements before downloading and getting disappointed. All of the games listed are free to download and play, though don’t be surprised when you’re asked to pay for additional in-game content (they’ve got to fill up the coffers somehow, after all).

href="http://www.leagueoflegends.com/">League of Legends

Originally based on a Warcraft III: Frozen Throne map called Defense of the Ancients, League of Legends is a session-based 5 on 5 multiplayer battle. Each team starts at opposite ends of the map, next to their “Nexus”, which they must defend. The winner is the team who destroys the enemy’s Nexus, simple as that.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0vKpfxHU6oc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0vKpfxHU6oc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

At the start of the game each player chooses a champion (of which there are currently 76 in total), though your choice will be limited based on your progress, or willingness to pay to unlock further characters. There are two game modes, Normal and Ranked, with Ranked introducing tougher restrictions and a Level 30 requirement to play.

Getting started is as easy as registering a free account, downloading the client and logging in. Before jumping into battle and failing miserably you’ll be walked through a tutorial, and given a basic introduction to controls, items and spells. Then you’re free to take on the world for guts, gold and glory.

href="http://battlefield.play4free.com/">Battlefield Play4Free

Do you enjoy shooting things? How about driving and flying whilst shooting things? Then the case is clear – you need to play Battlefield. Dating back to September 2002 when Battlefield 1942 was originally released, the Battlefield franchise has gone from strength to strength over the years and this free offering might stave off the hunger before Battlefield 3 lands.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zU6cA615Agc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zU6cA615Agc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

Incorporating heavily team-based capture and attack/defend game modes along with vehicle-driven warfare, your average match can be explosive to say the least. With tanks, planes, air strikes and fully destructible buildings there’s plenty of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/desktop-enhancements/">eye candy and action to keep even the most seasoned players happy.

Certainly one to revisit if you remember the frantic, laggy yet golden days of BF1942 and Road to Rome.

href="http://vindictus.nexon.net/">Vindictus

Vindictus is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) with some brutal hack-n-slash gameplay. Running on Valve’s fantastic href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-free-online-multiplayer-source-engine-mods-halflife-2/">Source engine, the game is visually pleasing even by today’s standards. The in-game objects can be interacted with, destroyed and picked up to be wielded as weapons.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/p0C6BzI0l8E?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/p0C6BzI0l8E?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

There are currently 3 classes to choose from (though 5 are planned) and regardless of class, teamwork is essential if you’re to advance the game and beat Vindictus’ 6 story-based episodes.

href="http://combatarms.nexon.net/">Combat Arms

Taking its cues from classics like Counter-Strike and the Call of Duty franchise, Combat Arms is a jam-packed free first person shooter from South Korean developer Doobic Studios. The game features a levelling system, with the player earning Gamer Points to spend on additional weapons and customization.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXvJNOHlPG0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXvJNOHlPG0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

There are a href="http://combatarms.nexon.net/Guides/Missions.aspx">ton of game modes to enjoy, including capture the flag, co-op play and various objective based game modes. Of course there’s always the option of flashing your cash, and this will allow you to buy unlocks with NX (the publisher’s credit system, which requires real money).

Combat Arms also features an integrated clan system and gaming leagues, making it quite a competitive corner of the web.

href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/">MapleStory

The final game on our list isn’t quite as meaty as the previous two, but may suit younger and casual online gamers. MapleStory is a side-scrolling MMORPG with simple controls and plenty of bright colours.

The game follows the typical RPG setup, with your character venturing into dungeons to defeat monsters, meeting fellow warriors, levelling up abilities and collecting in-game currency known as “Mesos”.

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6lM-_RD0bbs?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6lM-_RD0bbs?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

In addition to developing the ultimate warrior, players can also form guilds, get married and even form families. Unsurprisingly, MapleStory is huge in South Korea where it was initially developed.

Honorary Mention: href="http://www.thedutycalls.com/">Duty Calls

width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eE_msAKWdOs?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eE_msAKWdOs?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

War. War never changes. Oops, it just did! Not strictly a multiplayer game (well, it’s not strictly a game at all) Duty Calls is a Call of Duty parody released alongside the recent Bulletstorm as a marketing ploy. If you’ve played Modern Warfare (or any Call of Duty game since) then you’ll be giggling like a school girl for the most part.

Conclusion

Hopefully there’s enough multiplayer carnage here to at least whet a few appetites. The fact that these games are free to play at least gives you the ability to fully evaluate them before deciding to splash out on some upgrades. Then again, you might never feel the need to pay a penny and enjoy some quality games for the sweetest price of all.

Do any of these free online multiplayer games tickle your fancy? Have you got any other suggestions for us? We love to hear what you think, give us the low-down in the comments below.

    4 Free Online Multiplayer Source Engine Mods For Half-Life 2

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intro2.jpg" alt="best half-life 2 multiplayer mods" />Valve’s original hit href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-cross-platform-fps-games/">first person shooter Half-Life gave birth to some wonderful third-party development. Thanks to the free software development kit (SDK) modders, mappers and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/blender-powerful-free-crossplatform-3d-content-creation-suite/">modelers were free to hack and mould the engine into completely different games.

    Many of these games survived the jump from the original Half-Life engine to the Source engine, first used in Counter-Strike: Source & Half-Life 2 (and re-used several times in games like Left 4 Dead). Where many developers now charge users for in-house total conversions (Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam, for example) PC href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/games/">gamers have long been able to enjoy similar efforts for free.

    id="more-67274"> /> Here are a few personal free favourites to get the most out of your Source engine games!

    Full Steam Ahead

    If you’ve not got Steam, head over to href="http://www.steampowered.com/">the official website and download the client for href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-the-ultimate-windows-7-guide">Windows (Steam does work on Mac, as does Half-Life 2 but unfortunately free third-party mods that run on OS X are very thin on the ground).

    You’re going to need a copy of a game that uses the Source engine and supports third-party mods. If you’ve got a full copy of Half-Life 2 then you’re already done. If you’ve not got Half-Life 2 you could buy it (it’s about $10, £7) or a similar title with support for the SDK.

    Luckily there is href="http://store.steampowered.com/search/?category2=16">a list of games that support these mods on the Steam website, choose one you like the look of and make sure it’s downloaded and ready to play.

    href="http://www.zombiepanic.org/">Zombie Panic! Source [ href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/17500/">On Steam]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/zps1.jpg" alt="best half-life 2 multiplayer mods" width="580" height="464" />

    At the time of writing Zombie Panic! Source is entertaining more online players than a considerable amount of new full-price releases, which is pretty good going for a free mod. There are two classes – the human survivor and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/apocalypse-now-with-these-three-zombie-games/">blood-thirsty zombies.

    Everyone starts out human, apart from one (volunteer or auto-selected) zombie. As a human it’s your job to fend off hordes of undead with whatever weapons you can find (you’re given one random melee weapon and a handgun to start you off). Zombies simply have to eat brains!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/zps2.jpg" alt="half life 2 mods" width="580" height="464" />

    When a human player is killed by a zombie then he or she joins the zombie team. Each zombie has a limited amount of lives, and when these lives run out the humans win. Of course, if the zombies overrun the human team then the zombie team wins.

    href="http://www.fortress-forever.com/">Fortress Forever [ href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/900646/">On Steam]

    Do you remember Team Fortress Classic? Back when mods were free add-ons, created by enthusiasts in their bedrooms and played by thousands? Don’t you wish someone would remake the classic TFC, except from scratch on the Source engine? Step in Fortress Forever!

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-0-6wdDyGLI" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-0-6wdDyGLI">

    The mod aims to satiate the needs of those who have stuck with the age-old TFC, and also promises to have done “more for new TF players than any prior Fortress attempt” – which should please the newbies.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/fortress.jpg" alt="half life 2 mods" width="580" height="435" />

    As well as the old school capture the flag set-up, FF includes several other game modes, 10 playable classes and in excess of 20 maps (including the legendary 2fort). If you pine for TFC and are sick of Team Fortress 2, you might have just found your medicine.

    href="http://www.insmod.org/">Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat [ href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/17700">On Steam]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/insmod2.jpg" alt="half life 2 mods" width="580" height="435" />

    Winner of ModDB’s Mod of the Year 2007, Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat delivers a present-day conflict experience with a variety of real-world weapons and equipment. You won’t get very far without working as a team and making the most of the environment provided.

    The realism levels have been turned up to 11, meaning a couple of bullets is all it takes to be pushing up daisies. There’s a few modes of play, including a Battlefield-esque point capture gametype and of course generic team href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/quake-live-free-online-shooter-in-your-browser/">deathmatch.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/insmod1.jpg" alt="half life 2 multiplayer mods" width="579" height="362" />

    Maps are based on real-world Afghan and Iraqi locations such as Ramadi, Almaden and Baghdad. There is also a new (unrelated) open source href="http://forums.newworldinteractive.com/index.php?/forum/14-insurgency-classic/">Insurgency Classic project, which might be worth checking out.

    href="http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/">Source Forts [ href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/90034/">On Steam]

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/sf1.jpg" alt="half life 2 multiplayer mods" width="580" height="311" />

    Recently back from the dead, Source Forts is a multiplayer mod with a difference, and will test your building and shooting skills equally. Armed with a modified Half-Life 2 gravity gun, teams must create and maintain their very own forts in order to protect their flag.

    At the start of each round there is a build period, where you and your team are given enough time to construct a base. At the same time your foes are busily doing the same. Once build-time is over, you must capture the opposing force’s flag more times than they capture yours.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/sf2.jpg" alt="best half-life 2 multiplayer mods" width="580" height="313" />

    There are different classes, plenty of maps and a small dedicated community playing. If you’re interested, you’ll want to href="http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_Started">check out the wiki for the full low-down.

    Conclusion

    Whilst there might not be a wealth of players enjoying these mods, there should still be enough available servers to get a decent game. If you’re looking for a neat way to link up with and meet gamers try href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/instant-message-and-more-mid-game-with-xfire/">X-Fire for Windows, a game-centric IM client.

    Unfortunately for gamers these mods seem to be thinner on the ground than ever – despite the original (and free) Half-Life classic Counter-Strike still being one of the most popular games on the Steam platform.

    Play Your Old Xbox, PS2, Newer X360 & PS3 Multiplayer Games Free With XLink Kai

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/intro2.jpg" alt="old free games" width="300" height="120" />It was a sad day when Microsoft announced that Xbox Live support for older games was ending in April this year. Classics like Halo and its sequel which introduced many to the notion of playing against foes across the world lost their online communities overnight.

    But long before the announcement was made a service called class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk">XLink Kai was already quite popular. By establishing a server on a home PC which connects your console to the Kai servers, it is possible to play pretty much any game that supports the System Link mode of play.

    X-Link Kai has support for Xbox, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-play-sony-playstation-2-games-on-your-pc/">Playstation 2, GameCube, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-psp-homebrew-alphabet-pt-1/">PSP, Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Finding a game can sometimes be difficult, but there’s a cracking little community there to help you organise and play your favourite games.

    id="more-53883">

    Before We Begin

    The console I’ll be using in this walkthrough is Microsoft’s original Xbox. The set-up procedure is a pretty basic affair for all consoles, but the service has a trickier set of rules to adhere to on newer consoles. Xbox 360 users might benefit from reading class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37954&sid=d7b9d7f0611bfc553d2ef0f40d74aade">this step-by-step and PS3 owners might want to consult class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28743&sid=d7b9d7f0611bfc553d2ef0f40d74aade">this one.

    The first issue I had was connecting my Xbox to my home network. As Microsoft’s chubby black console doesn’t support wireless networking, I decided to try  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-turn-an-old-router-into-a-wireless-bridge/">bridging the connection with my laptop, running Windows 7.

    If you’ve got metres of network cable, or your Xbox (or other chosen console) is already networked then you can skip this bit, but there’s a decent  class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=evo7:networking">network troubleshooter on the XLink website if you run into problems.

    Bridging Wirelessly With Windows 7

    Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to your console (in my case the Xbox) and the other to your computer’s Ethernet port. Click on Start then Control Panel and find Network and Sharing Center. In the panel on the left hand side click Manage Wireless Networks (this may appear as Manage Connections).

    In the next dialogue choose Adapter properties and click on the Sharing tab. Enable the first option: Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection and then OK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/sharing.jpg" alt="old free games" width="580" height="500" />

    Now you should have bridged your console wirelessly. One good way to test this is to start-up your console with nothing in the CD tray, and attempt to access an online element from the console’s dashboard.

    On an old Xbox you can try to make a new Xbox Live Gamertag. Once the set-up fails (it will, Xbox Live has been shut down after all) you’ll get asked if you want to troubleshoot your connection. Agree and run the network diagnostic tool. As long as you see the “ class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/just-dnslookup-remote-dns-lookup-tool/">DNS resolved” message then you’re connected and good to go.

    Installing X-Link Kai

    Head over to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/downloads.php">XLink Kai download page and grab the installer. Whilst it is worth mentioning that there are Windows, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download-free-mac-manual">Mac and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-guide-linux">Linux versions, you might also need to set-up wireless bridging within your chosen OS. Linux users might want to check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-easily-share-your-wireless-connection-in-ubuntu-9-10/">Justin’s guide about doing this with class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ubuntu-1004-extremely-simple-operating-system-linux/">Ubuntu.

    Once downloaded, run the XLink Kai installer.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/xlinksetup.jpg" alt="old games" width="524" height="412" />

    Once you’ve installed, there’s one last check to do before playing. Windows 2000, XP and Vista users are in luck as XLink should work perfectly and they can skip this bit.

    Windows 7 users will need to find XLink Kai within the Start menu, right click on Start Kai and choose Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and enable compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Last of all check Run this program as an administrator and hit OK.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/compatibility.jpg" alt="old games" width="396" height="550" />

    Let’s Play Some Games

    Use the Start Kai shortcut you just modified to launch the program. Once it’s loaded you should be prompted for a login. class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/signup.php">Click here to register for an XTag, supply all the details required and confirm your account.

    Turn on your console (stick in a game, I recommend Halo 2 for Xbox as people still play it) and make sure it’s completed starting up. Log in through Kai. It shouldn’t take long, and once loaded click on the small magnifying glass icon (labelled style="color: #ff0000;">1 in the screenshot below) to bring up the diagnostics panel. In the game you’re playing (I chose Halo 2) don’t sign in to any online services and choose System Link as if to trick your console into looking for games.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/xlinkdiag1.jpg" alt="old games" width="562" height="469" />

    style="text-align: center;">

    Now click on the Switch to diagnostics view toggle button (labelled style="color: #ff0000;">2 in the screenshot above). Your console should appear, with a message saying it’s correctly configured. Congratulations, now you can click on the globe icon to bring up Arena View.

    Choose your console, genre of game and eventually the game you want to play. Once you find a populated arena, click on it. You should instantly see the games pop up in your System Link menu. Simply join any game of your choosing through your console.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/playing.jpg" alt="old free games" width="580" height="331" />

    If you are having trouble then the class="vt-p" href="http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forums.php">XLink Kai community forums are full of helpful people, not to mention those organising games and tournaments. Don’t forget you’re far more likely to get a game at sensible times so don’t fret if there aren’t any servers immediately, you could always start one.

    Take Part In Multiplayer War Games With Free FPS AssaultCube

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assaultlogo.jpg" alt="multiplayer war games" width="300" height="151" />What many people don’t know about me is that I used to be a die-hard gamer. I would play team-match Medal of Honor with guys and girls around the globe until three in the morning, then I’d get up the next morning and hit the game even before I had breakfast. Yes, I was not always the pillar of the community that you see here before you.

    It goes without saying that, like most of the FPS gamers out there, I started and became immediately addicted to Doom and the whole concept of the First-Person-Shooter game. With a set of earphones and a good video card, you can really feel like you’re battling alien monsters, or waging battle with your buddies in World War II. I love free FPS games, such as the list of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-five-free-online-shooter-games/">five online shooters Simon mentioned earlier.

    id="more-53864"> /> Since I’ve played almost every FPS game that has hit the market since the 1980’s, I’m kind of picky about quality. So, when I decided to do a review of the most popular open-source first-person shooter game on SourceForge called class="vt-p" href="http://assault.cubers.net/download.html">AssaultCube, I expected to play for five minutes and then move on.

    AssaultCube Offers Realism & Smooth Gameplay

    AssaultCube is available for Windows, Linux or Mac. The moment I installed and launched AssaultCube, I knew that I was in for a treat. Type in your nickname, set the screen resolution and you’re off and running. You’ll see yourself and your teammates in the map at the upper left of the screen. Obviously, you won’t see your opponents – you have to hunt them down!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault1.jpg" alt="multiplayer war games" width="575" height="431" />

    Right off the bat I noticed the graphics were impeccable, and the game creators took all of the best parts of the most popular FPS games and incorporated them into this one. All controls are available that gamers expect – crouch, jump, stealth, quick weapon select, and everything else.

    Movement is smooth and fast – and on a standard Windows 7 laptop I experienced absolutely no lag or skipping of the video. I noticed that the AI works well. Based on the difficulty settings, your team and your opponents will either fight hard, or run around in circles like idiots – in Single Player mode it’s up to you!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault2.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="575" height="431" />

    I also noticed that absolutely everything in this game is easily customizable. All video, sound, head-up display settings – everything. Whatever sort of FPS game experience that you’re used to with your other games, you can likely customize this one to suit your tastes.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault3.jpg" alt="" width="452" height="423" />

    The same goes for all of the keyboard mapping controls. You could completely remap all of the keys if you like, and bind any key to the commands. I found that the default follows the standard control setup for most games, so I pretty much left everything as is.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault4.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="487" height="572" />

    During game play, I noticed that the programmers really took every little detail into account. You’ll see muzzle flashes not only out of the guns, but also reflected on the walls. You’ll see your reflection when you stand and look at water, and you’ll see your bullets striking the walls or objects – although objects don’t react quite as realistically as they could (if at all).

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault5.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="507" height="522" />

    The real beauty of this game is the environment. There are a whole selection of game maps to choose from that offer an entirely different look and feel – different places to hide, to climb up onto, or to dive down into. Every map will require different tactical maneuvers, so the fun really never stops – and I haven’t even got to multi-player mode yet!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault6.jpg" alt="" width="486" height="519" />

    When you choose multi-player mode, you can set up a LAN game on your network, or you can choose from the available game servers around the world. I checked it around midnight my time and found that the top 10 or so servers had plenty of active players.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault7.jpg" alt="free multiplayer war game" width="575" height="501" />

    I found that multi-player mode also ran smoothly, even during chaotic and active moments in the game. The only time I saw a few skips was when there was about seven players on each team battling it out in a courtyard. But even then, it barely lasted a second.  Playing this game in multi-player mode brought back a whole lot of fun memories from my earlier days of FPS gaming. In fact, I think I blew about forty minutes just playing while I should have been writing this article!

    I know my priorities though, so as the enemy shot my buddy who I was supposed to be providing cover-fire for, I took my last screenshot and got back to the article. John445, wherever you are – sorry, buddy!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/assault81.jpg" alt="multiplayer war games" width="575" height="461" />

    Overall, I can see why this game has had almost 30,000 downloads on SourceForge. It is addictive, very fun, and if you have any leaning toward easily getting addicted to multiplayer FPS wargames – I would advise you to avoid it at all cost, or kiss your free time goodbye.

    Give AssaultCube a run and let us know what you think. Do you know of any other FPS games out there that are as good or better? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. />
