PRTG Monitor – A Free Bandwidth Meter For PCs In Your Home Network

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/networkmonitor.png" alt="" />Have you ever been in a situation where your Internet is just dragging along, while you know that you’re the only person on your network, and you’re hardly using any bandwidth?

There are plenty of tools out there that will help you with analyzing your home network and assist you with increasing your Internet speeds on that network. You could use href="http://http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/have-you-ever-wondered-how-much-bandwidth-you-use-windows/">Networx, a tool Karl covered, to measure the individual bandwidth of each PC. You could go through some of the href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/test-home-network-speed-decipher-results/">network speed tests that Matt described. Then you could follow Tina’s tips to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/break-the-speed-limits-to-your-internet/">increase your Internet speeds.

In this article, I’m going to offer you a very cool centralized solution that you can run on a single PC (or server), which will go out and monitor your entire network for traffic and performance issues.

Monitor Your Entire Network With PRTG Monitor

If you stop and think about it, to get a true measurement about the health of your network, you really need to monitor not only the traffic going in and out of just one PC on the network. You should also be constantly monitoring each connected device for any problems. Such problems could be recognizing when the CPU goes haywire, when network bandwidth stays pegged at the max, or any other factors that indicate there could be a virus or hacking involved.

The href="http://www.paessler.com/download/prtg">PRTG Monitor software is a commercial tool, but there is a great freeware version available to home users that provides monitoring for up to 10 “sensors”. For most home users, this is more than sufficient.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg1.png" alt="" width="578" height="428" />

You can run PRTG on more than one server for a “cluster” mode, but the easiest and fastest setup is to run it on one server in “standalone mode”.

The first screen you’ll see after you set up PRTG and launch the software, is the main menu where you can quickly access the major areas of the monitor software. This includes manually adding devices to monitor, reviewing status results in log files and reports, or having the software perform “network discovery” to locate any devices connected to your network.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg3.png" alt="" width="572" height="367" />

Manually adding devices lets you configure little details that the automatic discovery won’t do, like customizing the icon for that device or giving it a name that you will recognize.

All you have to do is type in the known network IP address for that device. At the top of the Network Monitor screen is where you’ll find the quick navigation bar. This is where you can go to view the sensor statuses, view all network alarms, reports and logs.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg4.png" alt="" width="470" height="525" />

The alarm area will show you all of the latest alarm messages for all of the devices on your network. These might include notifications that the CPU on a PC or device has gone through the roof, or the fact that the space on the C: drive is dangerously low. The system is looking for the sort of symptoms that indicate an unhealthy or infected system.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg5.png" alt="" width="579" height="216" />

Of course, if you scroll over to the right when you view the device status, you’ll see the last measured network bandwidth for that device as well – an important indicator that there may be a problem, or that you have someone on your network that’s stealing all of your bandwidth!

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg5b.png" alt="" width="573" height="145" />

The “Live Data” graphs off to the right of the main display screen are my favorite part of the software. Here you can keep an eye on the CPU load, memory use and overall health of all of the devices on your home network. And if you don’t want to sit there monitoring everything all day, the software will log the data and provide you with graphs for different time intervals, like the last few days or the last month.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg6.png" alt="" width="573" height="333" />

The overview screen for each device is where you can get access to that information, as well as the log files, alarm notifications, and all of the realtime information for that device.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg7.png" alt="" width="578" height="359" />

You also get cool notification icons that highlight when there’s an active alarm or notification for any device on your network. Each icon has a different meaning – informational, warning, or alarm. Just click on the icon to see those notifications.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg8.png" alt="" width="483" height="444" />

If you want a closer view of the device behaviors, just click on any of the graphs and it’ll switch into full-screen mode. If you are the type of person that likes to have realtime statistics up on your screen (especially if you use an extended monitor) – go ahead and connect to the server remotely, and just display these graphs right on your screen (plus it looks really cool when people walk by…)

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg8b.png" alt="" width="578" height="507" />

The logs will provide you with a huge volume of system state changes, alarm notifications and just status reports about what’s going on throughout your network and from each device. I’ve never seen freeware that is quite this effective and useful when it comes to getting really valuable information about a network, or remotely monitoring device like this. I’m really impressed with this software.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border-width: 1px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/prtg9.png" alt="" width="579" height="526" />

Try installing it on one of your more powerful home PCs and give it a try, or set up a dedicated server for monitoring your network health, and just let it run and log data. You may be surprised at what the software discovers, and what it tells you about where you may be losing bandwidth to runaway processes or infected computers.

Give it a shot and let us know how well it worked for your network. Did you learn anything new? Share your experiences with it in the comments section below.

Turn Your Social Network Feeds Into News Stories With Smartr [iPhone & iPad]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/smartr.jpg" alt="social network news feed" />Does the iPad and iPhone need yet another magazine or newspaper style app? Well, despite the popularity and craftsmanship of similar apps like href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/flipboard-social-magazine/">Flipboard, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/zite-ipad-rss-feed-contender/">Zite, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pulse-free-visual-display-rss-news-reader-ipad/">Pulse, Factyle’s href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smartr-news-for-ipad/id453281695?mt=8#">Smartr News, released last week, has its own unique features and approach to using your Twitter and Facebook feeds for downloading news and other content.

If your social network usage is like mine, most of your social feeds consist of links to web content rather than pure messages. Likewise, you probably post more links than you do messages. So it only makes sense to have an app exclusively devoted to using your social networks as news feed sources. Smartr News is similar to Flipboard, but it’s more streamlined.

Set Up Pages

Smartr News starts you off with a few Technology, Breaking News, and Trending RSS feeds of news stories, but adding your Twitter and Facebook accounts personalizes your Smartr News content. It actually downloads the links to articles on the timeline of your social networks and displays them read-only style stripped of ads and other obtrusive content.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1052.jpg" alt="social network news feed" width="580" height="435" border="0" />

The two-column display includes your feeds on one side, and your selected linked content on the other.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1057.jpg" alt="social news feed" width="435" height="580" />

If you have the right selection of Twitter and Facebook friends, their links also become a part of your news sources, providing you an abundant amount of content.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1053.jpg" alt="social news feed" width="580" height="435" border="0" />

In addition, Smartr News comes with featured feeds for sports, “Long Reads” (long thoughtful articles), celebrity gossip, fashion, movies, trending, and the like.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1059.jpg" alt="social news feed" width="580" height="579" border="0" />

A preview of your pages are displayed as squares, each with a headline and an image of leading stories. You can also add pages to this top list.

Sharing Content

Similar to other news apps in this genre, Smartr provides several ways to share stories and save them for later reading. Besides having your own posted links shared on your social networks, you can also save articles to your Instapaper or Read It Later service.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1056.png" alt="social media news rss feed" width="580" height="351" border="0" />

If the links you post are really important to you and others, Smartr has a unique feature for creating blog pages based on your links.

After you add a new blog, you simply tap to add selected articles to it. Smartr creates an external blog page for you that can be subscribed to by others. The page design of Smartr blogs are very basic, but the intent is have a place where you can build a collection of selected articles to share with others.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1063.jpg" alt="social media news rss feed" width="580" height="564" border="0" />

Unfortunately however, you have to view your blog outside of Smartr. It doesn’t download within the app itself.

Smartr Activity

Another way to get more news content in Smartr is by creating an Activity page that consists of selected friends with similar interests to yours that you can follow. Your Activity page will consist solely of their posts with their news links.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_1060.jpg" alt="social media news rss feed" width="535" height="580" />

Smartr also provides a list of “handpicked featured users” to get you started.

Other Features

Smartr’s other features include the ability to write and post directly to your Twitter and Facebook timelines, as well as to Tumblr and Posterous.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_10561.png" alt="social network news feed" width="580" height="351" border="0" />

You can also navigate the newsreader app really easily with a single finger gesture. In addition to tapping on individual stories in the timeline, you can swipe your finger on the right column to move to the previous or next story in the timeline. This makes for a really quick way to scan stories without a lot of hand movement across the screen.

So is Smartr a replacement for other newsreader apps? Well, it depends on what your needs are. If you get most of your news from your social networks, then yes, Smartr seems to be the best way to go. Let us know what you think.

Learn & Grow Your Business At EFactor – The World’s Largest Social Network For Entrepreneurs

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor01.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social network" />You might say what’s wrong with LinkedIn and many of the Facebook groups that have sprouted around entrepreneurship. Actually nothing – but just as everything from cooking to travel needs its own niche community, entrepreneurship deserves one too. Come to think of it, the web we know today would be a large vacant space without the enterprising zeal of tech evangelists and the big barons of the web who started out as humble entrepreneurs.

href="http://www.efactor.com/">EFactor fits into that niche nicely. EFactor says that it is the world’s largest entrepreneurs social network. It may or may not be backed up by statistics, but one thing is sure…it sure has all the all the tools that a wannabe (and a well-worn) entrepreneur needs. It has valuable knowledge resources and a mix of free and premium (paid) tools for the  entrepreneur.

Let’s become yet another member here and see if it’s worth our while.

It Is a Large Business Network

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor02.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social network" width="580" height="403" />

With a member database of 900,000 and that too from nearly 168 countries, EFactor can lay claim to the title. The homepage itself tells you that the Finance Request Network has over 25,000 vetted investors to help you get your business off the ground. EFactor is all about match-ups between those with business ideas and those with funds or advice. It is also a virtual marketplace. EFactor works around 4 main themes – find funding, gain knowledge, save costs, and gain revenue.

Starting Out At EFactor with One-Click

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor03.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social networking sites" width="580" height="233" />

Just like any other network EFactor gives you a way to bring in your friends and contacts into your network. EFactor’s One-Click Network is your first matchup that will help you build contacts with similar interests. You can build up your profile by connecting your LinkedIn account too which is what I have done. But spend some time filling up the Knowledge Profile section.

The NOW Feed

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor04.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social networking sites" width="580" height="315" />

The NOW feed is like the control center for what you engage in at EFactor. It is a list of feeds from all the important sections on EFactor. As you can see from the screenshot above, EFactor filters and feeds you information depending on the profile you have set up. You can connect to these resources like News, Blogs, Get Answers etc. and explore them in more depth. For instance, on Get Answers you can seek advice from the EFactor community and use the search function to read up old Q&A’s.

The Toolbox

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor07.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social networking sites" width="580" height="352" />

The Toolbox is the resources page for an entrepreneur. It is a mix of a virtual marketplace and other real world resources. Most of them are premium services requiring payment. But there are some like EFactor Widgets and Biz2Credit which you can explore. Free tools are limited and I am not sure how useful they are in their scope.

The Knowledge Base

Knowledge and education is what you will like to seek as a fledgling entrepreneur. The Knowledge section on EFactor is chockfull of personal stories, whitepapers, PDF downloads, streaming audio files etc. You can use the filters on top to sift through the different types of media on the page. But a better way to go through the knowledge mine here would be to use the stages of entrepreneurial how-to as listed on the left. If you are a first time entrepreneur, begin from the beginning (Before you start), right on to Expanding.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor05.jpg" alt="entrepreneur networking" width="580" height="313" />

There are many among the close to a million members who have advertised their services as mentors. EFactor gives each of them a separate page with complete bio, email addresses, and personal feeds. Again, you can filter them by area of expertise and the kind of entrepreneurial assistance you are looking for.

class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Efactor06.jpg" alt="entrepreneurs social network" width="580" height="257" />

If you are looking to use EFactor as a free only tool, then the knowledge base, business networking, and the Finance Requests tool should help you make headway. You could do without premium features like Events and entrepreneurial meet-ups via offline E.Lounges.

I am just starting out and learning my way through the niche entrepreneurial network. You can add the EFactor’s resources to the few we earlier covered:

  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-websites-show-how-start-business/">10 Best Websites That Show You How to Start a Business
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/big-idea-sell-openinvo/">Instantly Connect Idea Makers & Entrepreneurs Using OpenInvo
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-awesome-inspiring-blogs-entrepreneurs-business-owners/">10 Awesome & Inspiring Blogs for Entrepreneurs and Business Owners
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-websites-creative-business-ideas-entrepreneur/">8 Websites For Creative Business Ideas If You Want To Be An Entrepreneur
  • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-tools-plan-visualise-startup-business/">3 Free Tools to Plan and Visualise Your Start-Up Business

I am starting to build my own entrepreneurs social network. What about you? As an entrepreneur in the making would you like to connect here? Do you think EFactor as a social network is worth your while?

Use Your WiFi Connection Setup On All PCs With WiFi Network Backup Manager [Windows]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cdbackup.png" alt="" />According to a class="vt-p" href="http://www.marketingcharts.com/direct/computers-remain-popular-with-mobile-users-18195/prosper-internet-usage-by-device-owners-jul11gif/">Prosper Mobile Insights Survey in 2011, over half of mobile smartphone users – 56 percent to be exact – still sat down and logged into the Internet with a computer. Not only do these mobile users usually prefer toting around a laptop for real hard-core heavy-bandwidth computer use while they’re on the go, they also find themselves accessing the Internet from multiple mobile Internet hotspots throughout the day. A typical, active person may have four to six commonly used Wi-Fi points, like home, work, an Internet cafe on the way to work, and the local library on the weekends.

Having multiple access points isn’t so much of a hassle, because you can just configure all of them in your wireless network setup and then click to connect to whichever one you want. Here at MUO, we’ve offered some good tips on setting up wi-fi networks, like Tina’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wifi-for-dummies-9-common-mistakes-setting-up-a-wireless-network/">Wi-Fi for Dummies, and Tim’s tips on setting up a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-set-up-and-secure-your-own-wi-fi-hotspot/">secure wi-fi hotspot. The hassle comes in when you switch to a new computer or if you switch computers often. You have to set up all of those Wi-Fi points again, and hopefully you can remember all of the previous settings you were using.

Luckily, there’s an app called the class="vt-p" href="http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/shair/archive/2011/06/11/wifi-network-backup-manager-utility.aspx">WiFi Network Backup Manager that can capture all of the details for your Wi-Fi connections and save them in a very portable and easy to manage XML file.

Using The WiFi Network Backup Manager

The WiFi Network Backup Manager is a useful tool that you probably never would have imagined needing until you use it. Then you can’t live without it.

Basically, when you first run the program, it will extract your current Wi-Fi network settings and lay them all out in an XML format.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback1.png" alt="" width="580" height="452" />

style="text-align: left;">You can explore the settings by scrolling down. If things seem a little hectic, just click on the red minus sign to collapse a configuration category. This lets you explore your current Wi-Fi network settings without a whole lot of clutter. Keep in mind that you can’t change the settings from within this app – it’s primarily a view and backup utility.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback2.png" alt="" width="358" height="333" />

style="text-align: left;">If you want to make changes, make them in the Windows network setup, and then relaunch the WiFi Network Backup Utility for a fresh update. Once you’re satisfied that all of the settings for all of your commonly used Wi-Fi networks are good, go ahead and click on the “Save All” button at the bottom of the main window.

style="text-align: left;">This will open up a dialog window where you can tell the utility where to save the backup file. It saves it as a .WifiBackup format, which is supposed to be readable only by the software, but in reality it’s just an XML file. At this point you can save the file – which is your complete Wi-Fi profile – anywhere you like.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback3.png" alt="" width="462" height="417" />

style="text-align: left;">Save the file to a USB drive (along with a copy of the install for the Wi-Fi Backup Utility), and you’ll have all of your Wi-Fi settings available everywhere you go. Borrowing a friend’s laptop? Just pop in the USB stick and all your Wi-Fi settings are right there. Getting a refreshed laptop at work? Now you don’t have to worry about wasting time re-configuring everything.

style="text-align: left;">When you’re on the new computer and you want to reload all of the Wi-Fi network settings into the Windows Network setup, just launch the Wi-Fi backup utility and click on the “Load” button. Browse to the .WifiBackup file that you saved, and the software will import the XML file with all of your previous Wi-Fi settings. A dialog box will pop up asking you if you want to load those Wi-Fi networks into your current control panel.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback4.png" alt="" width="519" height="423" />

style="text-align: left;">Click Yes, and then go into the Wi-Fi network configuration area of the Windows control panel. You’ll see the networks loaded up, with all of the settings that you had defined on your other computer. That’s it – it doesn’t get much easier than that.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback5.png" alt="" width="552" height="376" />

style="text-align: left;">One final note for those of you that feel you want the ability to tweak the settings even after you’ve exported the XML file to your USB drive or your DropBox account. Just open up the XML file in Notepad or WordPress, and you can edit it just like you normally would any other text file. You’ll need to sift through the code, but it’s easy enough to find the settings. You can manually change those settings, and then just make sure to save the file with the .WifiBackup extension.

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/wifiback6.png" alt="" width="574" height="400" />

style="text-align: left;">If you do a lot of traveling, and you tend to switch between several laptops – like a work and a home one – using this utility can save you a lot of time. Once you have a good setup working with all of your Wi-Fi connections, just back up the file and you’ll never have to set them up on another PC again.

style="text-align: left;">Give the Wi-Fi Backup Manager a try and let us know what you think. Will it save you some time while you’re mobile? Can you think of other useful reasons someone may want to keep a backup file of Wi-Fi settings? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

    Giver – Still The Best Way to Send Files Across A Network [Linux]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_intro.jpg" alt="" />You know that, no matter what operating system you use, sharing files across a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/network/">network can sometimes be a pain. Sadly, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux">Linux isn’t always an exception in this category either, although for basic folder sharing some distributions make it easier. Having to set up a shared folder is even more painful when all you really want to do is send a file to a different computer, without having to use class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/dropbox">Dropbox or another outside service.

    class="vt-p" href="http://code.google.com/p/giver/">Giver, which has already class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-transfer-files-easily-among-linux-machines/">been reviewed back in early 2009, still belongs to the list of top-notch programs. This is even more surprising considering that the last release came out in 2007. Although the program itself hasn’t changed, the distributions themselves have changed dramatically, and yet the program still works.

    Giver does file sharing a little differently. Instead of sharing a folder to the network, you can simply choose a file or folder to send to a certain computer. In other words, this is a one-time transaction, like sending an email with an attachment.  That’s all Giver does while barely having any options to configure in order to keep the experience as simple and flawless as possible.

    Installation

    In my own experience all distributions simply name the package “giver”, but if you use a distribution with a small user base, you may want to double check.

    Procedure

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_main.jpg" alt="" width="326" height="561" />

    As soon as Giver is installed on the two computers you would like to send files to and from, open up Giver on each computer. It magically detects the instances of Giver running on your own computer and any other computer on the network. From there, you can either left click, choose the option you want, and choose the file/folder to send, or you can drag and drop a file or folder onto a computer in the list to do the same.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_notification.jpg" alt="" width="577" height="54" />

    A notification should then appear on the computer that is receiving the file or folder, where you must click Accept in order to start the process. It should go relatively quickly (it’s using your full class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/lan/">LAN or class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/wifi/">WiFi speed, after all), and it will be stored in whatever folder you have set.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_accept.jpg" alt="" width="574" height="136" />

    Options

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/giver_options.jpg" alt="" width="466" height="560" />

    Speaking of options, I’m going to mention them really quick. Like I said, there aren’t very many at all, as you can probably determine from the screenshot. Again, this was meant for easy and flawless operation with no configuration needed out-of-the-box. There are only three possible things you can configure. You can change your name if you would like (which it originally takes from whatever you have set for your system account for “Full Name”), what kind of icon appears whenever people see your computer on their list, and where to save files that were given to you.

    Considerations

    Linux distributions have changed quite a bit, considering the arrival of class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gnome-3-beta-desktop-linux/">GNOME 3 and the general advancement of software stacks. No worries though, Giver runs perfectly fine alongside newer software stacks, and doesn’t give you any problems. However, it would be helpful to note that Giver directly uses ports. Therefore, if a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-open-router-ports-their-security-implications">port is not open thanks to your system firewall, nothing will get through, even if your computer appears on the other person’s list.

    Normally, setting a port exception would do the trick (the list even says what port it’s using!), but because Giver randomizes the port each time you start it up, that may not be a viable solution for you. I would think that the developers were fine with it being this way because it is meant to be used over a network anyway, which should be appropriately configured and protected. Therefore, for easy operation you should disable your class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/firewall/">firewall, but to protect yourself, make sure that your network has a firewall itself and that it works well.

    Also, if you’re using this on a mobile computer, I highly recommend that you immediately turn on your firewall again before leaving your protected network. Linux may not be affected by any viruses (at least there’s nothing common out there), but direct attacks from hackers are still a possibility.

    Conclusion

    For networks, Giver is almost a must, especially in larger environments such as workplaces. Despite its age, it is very stable and works as great as it should. Maybe someday a group can come back and enhance Giver even more by adding new features, such as GTK3 support. However, as long as it runs, everything is in order.

    How often do you share files and folders? Do you often find yourself only doing this for some individual files? Would you use Giver, and how would you maybe improve it? Let us know in the comments!

    2 Ways To Monitor Tweets Within Your Twitter Network

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-06.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" />Twitter is a well-known and well-used source of instant hot news and trending topics. It’s huge and is able to spread news in real time. We have listed lots of tools to monitor href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/12-websites-show-hottest-twitter-topics/">hottest Twitter topics, find href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-content-matters-twitter-part-1/">important content and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-websites-show-hottest-twitter-topic/">track popular news.

    However being huge and powered by real people, Twitter is also hugely cluttered. It is almost impossible to find one’s way around thousands of tweets and retweets. The only way to give this stream of updates a meaning is to only listen to people that matter to you: people you follow for a reason. Here are a collection of tools that will help you track down the news within your Twitter network.

    1. Updates Retweeted By Your Friends

    “Old-style” retweets (also referred to as “manual” as opposed to href="http://support.twitter.com/entries/77606-what-is-retweet-rt">Twitter-RT functionality) have long been an effective source of trending topics. If a story gets retweeted and cited, it must be a hot story. But are you really that interested in any hot topic discussed online?

    If you’ve been smart enough to create a relevant circle of friends on Twitter, you are likely to share similar interests with people you follow. So here are two ways to find out what people you care about retweet daily:

    Tweeted Times

    href="http://tweetedtimes.com/">Tweeted Times is a social media tool to create an easy-to-scan newspaper of your Twitter timeline. You can create a digest based on your own Twitter stream, any Twitter list and / or Twitter search results.

    The tool ranks the updates based on how many of your friends and friends of your friends have retweeted the news.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-01.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" width="499" height="459" />

    Updated: hourly.

    Tracking tools: You can read the newspaper online or use your preferred RSS reader to track your newspaper feed. You can also set up the tool to automatically share top stories and promote your newspaper from your Twitter account.

    FeedEra

    href="http://feedera.com/">FeedEra is another tool that creates a digest of your friends’ retweets. The tool ranks the stories using its “FeedScore” which is said to aggregate data from Twitter, Topsy, bit.ly and other powerful sources. All the updates are broken into stories, photos, videos and music.

    class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-74941" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-05.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="327" />

    Updated: daily (email digest) and live (online digest).

    Tracking tools: Get a digest in your inbox every morning with the best of your feed.

    In your settings you can also maintain a blacklist of domains and annoying Twitter friends you don’t want to be included in the digest:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-02.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="230" />

    Besides subscribing to your friends’ popular stories, you can also subscribe to any Twitter list update (the list should not necessarily be created by you).

    2. Updates “Favorited” By Your Friends

    Whereas retweeting spreads the word further, “favoriting” saves it for further reference (sort of a sharing versus bookmarking functionality). Most of your friends are likely to star Twitter updates to save most useful posts, so you may consider looking into what they like.

    I wasn’t able to find any good tool that would create a digest of what all your friends favorite. Instead, there are a few ways to create an aggregated RSS feed of your friends’ favorite Twitter updates:

    Favebytes

    href="http://favebytes.com/">Favebytes is a quick, registration-free web-based application that creates an OPML file from your friends’ favorites. Outline Processor Markup Language (OPML) is the traditional format for RSS aggregators to import and export the subscription list. This means you can use the OPML file created by Favebytes to import your friends’ favorite feeds to almost any feed reader.

    Here’s the sample of my OPML file imported by Google Reader:

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-03.jpg" alt="monitor your tweets" width="550" height="229" />

    Updated: live (powered by Twitter built-in Twitter favorites feeds).

    Tracking tools: Most RSS readers.

    2. Yahoo! Pipes

    There are a few promising pipes that aggregate your Twitter friends’ favorites – here are href="http://pipes.yahoo.com/earth2marsh/twitter_friends_favorites">two href="http://pipes.yahoo.com/xverges/friendsfavs">of them. If you are ready to cope with frequent Yahoo! Pipes slowness, that can be a good solution.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/twitter-digest-04.jpg" alt="monitor tweeters" width="550" height="354" />

    Updated: live (powered by Twitter built-in Twitter favorites feeds).

    Tracking tools: Online interface or any RSS reader.

    href="http://www.favewits.com/">Favewits.com is another online tool based on Yahoo! Pipes but I found it even slower. There’s also  href="http://favorious.com/">Favorious that lets you have various sorts of fun with Twitter favorites including your viewing your friends’ favorite timeline – but I wasn’t able to get it working properly.

    From what I have seen, the above two tools only grab updates from ~100 people you most recently followed, so if you follow more users, these cannot be complete solutions.

    Any other good tips on how to track only meaningful Twitter updates that really matter to you? Please let us know in the comments!

    3 Ways To Meaningfully Visualize Your LinkedIn Network

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-08.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin connections"/> href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/linkedin/">LinkedIn has always been one of the most useful social media networks for me. The reason is simple: it is business-oriented and (almost) clutter-free. While I do have a large network there, I am almost never spammed or bugged in any way: there no random people who are willing to chat or pitch their products.

    The best thing is that people are connected for a reason there: when sending a friend request, you need to specify how you are connected to a person. This way your network contains a wealth of business-oriented information: you can find out how you are related to any company or person you need to get in touch with. Alternatively, you can be introduced to anyone outside your immediate network using your first-level connections.

    id="more-67335"> /> Tapping into your Linkedin connections can be a great way to discover new career opportunities for personal and professional growth – and here are three tools that can help you to:

    1. Visualize Your Network Layers and Influencers: InMaps

    href="http://inmaps.linkedinlabs.com/">InMaps (we have already href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/inmaps-visualize-linkedin-connections/">reviewed InMaps) is a new project inside LinkedIn labs that creates the visual representation of your professional network. The tool goes through your connections, analyzes the links between them and groups them into different network clusters.

    It may take some time for larger networks but it is well worth waiting…

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-01.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin connections" width="500" height="202" />

    The tool can be a huge help in identifying influencers in your business network:

    • People with bigger dots and their names in larger fonts have more connections;
    • Click on any dot to see the person you are connected to as well as where your points of connection overlap.

    Besides that, your map is color-coded to represent different affiliations or groups from your professional career, such as your previous employer, college classmates, or industries you’ve worked in.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-07.jpg" width="600" height="300" />

    The tool thus turns really helpful for building and expending your reach on many levels but most importantly, it adds some context to your connections: learn why people know each other and how they are connected.

    2. Visualize Your Relation to Any Company: MyWebCareer

    href="http://www.mywebcareer.com/">MyWebCareer is a multi-feature tool that makes sense of your Linkedin and Facebook connections by using sophisticated link analysis, visualization, and semantics technologies

    All the content the tools retrieves from your LinkedIn profile is fed into the semantic and entity extraction engine. The output enables you to explore a merged view of your online presence across multiple Internet properties and search engines.

    For example, the tool lets you identify your top companies you are associated with as well as top industry you are involved with:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-02.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin" width="600" height="224" />

    While the above visualization and graphing tools look interesting, the best tool inside is called “My Network” that provides visual interface for exploring your merged Career & Social Graph. It can turn very useful for exploring your relation to any company in your network.

    Click on any company name in the list and the tool will show which of your connections is involved in it and how:

    • Red Links = current position
    • Blue Links = previous positions
    • Link Thickness = time at company

    If you also have Facebook account tied to MyWebCareer, you’ll be able to see if you are connected to the person through Linkedin or Facebook or both.

    For example, here are my LinkedIn contacts who are related to About.com. You can see how long they have been involved into the company, if the are currently working there and how you are connected:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-04.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin" width="600" height="405" />

    3. Visualize Company and Position Distribution: ManyEyes

    href="http://www-958.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/manyeyes/">ManyEyes (here’s our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/manyeyes-visualize-statistics/">review of ManyEyes) is a multi-purpose free visualization tool that can process and graph any data you provide. With LinkedIn, you can export the whole list of your connections using href="http://www.linkedin.com/addressBookExport">AddressBookExport tool. The list will contain:

    • The full name of each of your contact;
    • The email address;
    • The current position;
    • The company.

    The latter two can become a great source for visualization (especially for large networks).

    Just format your .CSV file a bit. In my case that was merely about:

    • Breaking data into columns using comma as delimiter;
    • Adding informative column headers;
    • (Possibly) deleting unnecessary rows.

    Then copy-paste the area with data into ManyEyes and make sure the data is properly processed using the preview:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-05.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin" width="596" height="153" />

    Now, choose the visualization type and pattern (there are plenty of those inside). I chose the Matrix Chart that allowed me to visualize position versus company distribution using colors:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/linkedin-tools-06.jpg" alt="visualize linkedin connections" width="600" height="295" />

    As far as you can see, the tool is quite useful for identifying companies with most connections as well.

    Have you ever thought of using LinkedIn to grow your professional reach? Do you think these tools may turn useful? />

    Lockerz – A Social Network For Entertainment & Rewards-Based Shopping

With the huge success of Facebook, it’s no surprise that a lot of the newer sites out there – and most of the ones class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/author/stevencampbell/">I write about - feature some kind of social features or centralized community.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.lockerz.com/">Lockerz is one such site that takes advantage of both of those things. Lockerz is a social commerce company whose mission is “to be the homepage for men and women ages 13 to 30, building a community of trendsetters and tastemakers who love to shop, play, and connect on the web.” It’s a place where you can interact with others in the community while earning points you can use towards major discounts on your favorite items. Does that sound like something that might interest you?

    id="more-63913">

    What Exactly Is Lockerz?

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-20_1414.png" alt="what is social shopping" width="580" height="342" />

    As I mentioned in the introduction, Lockerz is a social commerce site. It was founded in 2009 by former technology and retail executive Kathy Savitt, who was formerly the vice president of strategic communications, content, and entertainment initiatives at class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/amazon/">Amazon. The Lockerz community has grown to more than 17 million members in less that one year, and the site offers major discounts on the best fashions, electronics, music, and more.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-20_1415.jpg" alt="social shopping sites" width="580" height="518" />

    Members of the site earn PTZ (points), which are used to lower the prices on your favorite merchandise. PTZ can be earned a number of different ways, like watching videos, listening to music, answering daily questions, inviting friends to join, buying your favorite brands, and with “FWB;)”, Lockerz’ social commerce feature.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-20_1415_001.jpg" alt="social shopping sites" width="557" height="331" />

    PTZ are then used to lower the prices of merchandise in the Lockerz Boutiques. The more PTZ a member earns and decides to use, the larger the discount, which can be up to 100%.

    Explain FWB;) To Me

    FWB;) (yes, I have to include the winky face. Sigh) is Lockerz’ social commerce platform that they introduced in October 2010. It’s a self-proclaimed “hybrid of e-commerce and social networking”, and it rewards members for interacting with one another. For instance, members are rewarded with PTZ for introducing their friends to their favorite fashion or technology brands, as well as music, videos, and more.

    “FWB;) creates a mutually beneficial relationship between members, their friends, and their favorite brands and artists. Friends share favorites, and everyone benefits.”

    Once you sign up to become a member of Lockerz, you will create a personal profile (Locker) in which your badges (Decalz) are showcased for friends to view. When a Lockerz friend clicks on Decalz in another member’s Locker, both members earn PTZ.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-20_1416.png" alt="what is social shopping" width="580" height="426" />

    Furthermore, if a friend purchases a product or views a video in-full after clicking on Decalz, both members earn (significantly) more PTZ. As you can see, the more influential members are with their friends, the more PTZ they earn towards their own shopping experience.

    Conclusion

    By now you may be wondering what types of products you can use all these PTZ towards on Lockerz. Well, Lockerz has partnered with thousands of the best brands and stores in a lot of different categories, including electronics, designer gear, sports equipment, and clothing outlets.

    I’m a fan of what Lockerz is doing. I really think that they do a good job of offering their members incentive to use the site, as well as give them creative ways to engage other users. It’s an interesting niche social network and I can’t wait to see other companies follow suit.

    How To Build & Use Your Own Network Attached Storage Using A Ubuntu Netbook

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/00-Ubuntu-Netbook.jpg" border="0" alt="network attached storage" />If you live in a multiple computer environment, you will know of the advantages of using NAS (Network-Attached Storage). Instead of storing common files inside a personal computer and synchronizing all those computers on a regular basis, it would be easier to store the files inside NAS and have all the computers within the network access the files there. NAS is perfect for collaboration in a small computer network, or for storing and sharing files.

    But getting a NAS means spending more money on hardware. If you are within a personal network, have a computer with Ubuntu and some storage space to spare (either an internal or external drive(s)), you could build your own NAS using all the ingredients you already have.

    id="more-62636">

    Installing Samba In Ubuntu

    The first thing you need to do before anything else is make sure that your computer is connected to a local network.  A wireless network is OK, but a wired network is highly recommended as it will give you a more stable connection.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/01a-Wireless-Connection.jpg" border="0" alt="network attached storage" width="580" height="250" />

    The second thing to confirm is that you have a computer with Ubuntu installed. I used a netbook and class="vt-p" href="http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook">Ubuntu Netbook Edition for my experiment. If you don’t want to install Ubuntu on your computer, you can class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-usb-ubuntu-linux-boot-jump-drive/">install the OS on a USB drive instead.

    To be able to share storage within a local network, you need to add Samba to your Ubuntu. Samba is the most commonly used file server system. It is the open-source implementation of Microsoft’s network protocol which means that it will work with all Windows, OS X and Linux machines on your LAN.

    • Start by opening “Applications” from the side menu and search for “Synaptic Package Manager“. This is the utility to add and remove packages (applications) within Ubuntu.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/02a-Synaptic-Package-Manager.jpg" border="0" alt="network storage" width="580" height="250" />

    • Open Synaptic Package Manager and search for “samba“.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03a-Search-Samba.jpg" border="0" alt="network storage" width="580" height="361" />

    • From the search results, right click on “samba” and choose “Mark for Installation“.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03b-Mark-Install.jpg" border="0" alt="network storage" width="480" height="310" />

    • Then click the “Apply” button to install it.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03c-Apply-Marked.jpg" border="0" alt="benefits of network attached storage" width="580" height="250" />

    • A confirmation window will appear. Click “Apply” to continue.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03d-Summary.jpg" border="0" alt="benefits of network attached storage" width="447" height="430" />

    • Ubuntu will download and install the package. The process might take a while depending on the speed of your internet connection.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03e-Downloading.jpg" border="0" alt="benefits of network attached storage" width="335" height="208" />

    • Another confirmation window will appear after the installation is complete.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/03f-Apply-Changes.jpg" border="0" alt="03f Apply Changes.jpg" width="511" height="231" />

    • Now you are ready to share some storage space within your network.

    Create And Share Folder(s)

    The next step is configuring the folder(s) to be shared to other users on your network. If you want to use an external drive as the Network Attached Storage, you can attach it to your system. If you don’t want other users to mess up your existing folders, just create new folder(s) to share inside this storage space by right clicking on an empty space and choosing “Create Folder“.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04a-Create-New-Folder.jpg" border="0" alt="04a Create New Folder.jpg" width="580" height="220" />

    • Right-click on any folder that you want to share to access the “Sharing Options“.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04b-Sharing-Options.jpg" border="0" alt="04b Sharing Options.jpg" width="580" height="300" />

    • Since we are going to use this storage inside a personal network, check all the boxes and fill in the required fields. Please consult the network administrator (or friends who understand networking) if you plan to use your Network Attached Storage inside a public network.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04c-Folder-Sharing.jpg" border="0" alt="04c Folder Sharing.jpg" width="395" height="364" />

    • You need to give permission to your machine before you can share the folder.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/04e-Add-Permission.jpg" border="0" alt="04e Add Permission.jpg" width="538" height="280" />

    After that, your shared folder(s) will appear in the network and everybody within the network can use the folder(s) to store their files. Repeat the process to other folders that you want to share on the network.

    Accessing The Shared Folders

    To access the shared folders from any computer within the network, point the computer’s file manager to:

    smb://ubuntu

    • In Mac, you can do this by going to the “Go – Connect To Server” menu (or by using “Command + K“).
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05a-Go-Connect-Menu1.jpg" border="0" alt="05a Go - Connect Menu.jpg" width="301" height="348" />

    • You can write down the address manually and click “Connect“, or you can use the “Browse” button to find the location of the shared folder(s).
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05b-SMB-Ubuntu.jpg" border="0" alt="05b SMB Ubuntu.jpg" width="488" height="228" />

    • The available folder(s) will appear on the list. Click “OK” to mount it.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05bb-Mount.jpg" border="0" alt="05bb Mount.jpg" width="420" height="283" />

    • After the folder is mounted, you can use it as if it’s a folder inside the local hard drive.
    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/05c-Browse-Ubuntu-Shared.jpg" border="0" alt="network attached storage" width="580" height="200" />

    I can’t give an example of accessing the shared folder on NAS from a Windows machine because my Windows is installed on the same machine where I installed Ubuntu. But the process should be similar. You should find the “Connect To Server” menu from “Control Panel – Network“.

    I also used a rather unstable wireless network, so my results of building my own NAS are a bit disappointing. If you are able to try this on a stable network and/or also able to try accessing the shared folder(s) from a Windows machine, please share your results in the comments below.

    Banish Social Network Buttons Forever With Adblock

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/social-adblock.jpg" />Encouraging you to “Like,” “Tweet”, “Digg”, and “Stumble” content, buttons for href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/social-networks">social networks spill on to almost every page on the modern Internet. If you prefer to copy URLs yourself, AdBlock can keep social networks where they belong: their own pages.

    Recently, we taught you how to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/adblock-protect-browser-malware/">use Adblock to keep you safe from malware, proving everyone’s favorite ad-blocking tool does more than just block ads. This week, thanks to a tip from a reader, we highlight yet another use for Adblock.

    Whether it’s at the bottom of an article or a collection hovering on the side of a page, buttons for social networks are everywhere. Some sites, like href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/facebook">Facebook, go even further — filling sites with random pictures of a given blog’s fans or an assortment of headlines recently shared on Facebook (as though those headlines are any different than the headlines on the page itself).

    id="more-56550"> /> Obviously we at MakeUseOf understand the appeal of such things; there are a few buttons around this very article. By putting these here we make it easy for you, our reader, to share our content with others. This means your friends read our content, and may become regular readers, thus bringing our goal of global domination that much closer to fruition.

    But just because we have our reasons for adding the buttons doesn’t mean you, our readers, want to see them. We’re all about empowering people, and if you’d rather copy and paste a URL into your social network of choice than see buttons on every page you visit…well, that’s up to you. Here’s how.

    Installing Adblock

    First things first: you have to install Adblock. You probably know how to do this, but if not here is the quick rundown of installation links for your browser:

    • href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1865">AdBlock Plus for Firefox
    • href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom"> AdBlock for Chrome
    • href="http://safariadblock.com/">AdBlock for Safari

    Install these plugins the way you normally would and you’re ready to get started!

    Two Filters

    There are two main filters on the web for blocking social networking craplets on the web: href="http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/?q=node/806">Fanboy’s Web Annoyances filter and href="https://monzta.maltekraus.de/adblock_social.txt">Montza’s social media blocker. These lists are both comparable, so feel free to try out both on your favorite sites to see what works for you.

    Not sure how to install new filters? Check out your AdBlock extension’s preferences; the option to do so is there.

    The Results

    So, how well does it work? Let’s take a look. As you know, at the bottom of every MakeUseOf article is a series of buttons. It looks like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/adblock-social-before.png" />

    Well, subscribed to either of the filters linked to above, the bottom of every article looks a little more like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/adblock-social-after.png" />

    Not the most interesting screenshot I’ve ever uploaded, but that’s the point: there’s no longer anything there. And lest you think this only works for tech blogs, on the front page of American news magazine Slate.com there’s a box that looks like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/adblock-social-slate.png" />

    Again, this method blocks that box completely (and several other pointless widgets that litter all of Slate’s pages).

    A Cleaner Web

    The web was probably at its cleanest five years ago, after advertisers stopped being so irritating but before social network buttons became ubiquitous. Use AdBlock Plus and you can relive those glory days of Internet tidiness! The best part is, you don’t even need to block ads: you can turn those filters off in the preferences, if you want to support your favorite sites.

    Social networks are cool, but I prefer copy/pasting links on my own. Having a way to block all of those annoying social networking buttons is fantastic to me, because I’m always looking for a way to reduce the clutter in my life.

    What about you: is using Adblock to filter out social networking boxes a good idea, or do you like the convenience of those buttons? Can you think of any other cool uses for Adblock? Let’s talk; the comments are below. />

    How To Install A BuddyPress Social Network On WordPress 3.0

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/buddypress-logo.gif" alt="wordpress plugin buddypress" />Have you ever felt like running your very own social networking site?  I know I have.  Have I actually got up and done it?  Not yet.  But with WordPress 3.0 it is now easy to set one up.

    A while back Damien wrote an article about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-build-a-social-networking-site-using-wordpress/">how to install and run your very own social network using WordPress.  At the time you had to download and install WordPress MU (or WordPress Multi User) in order to install BuddyPress and therefore to have your own social network.

    id="more-52057"> />

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="434" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="flashvars" value="guid=fft9IGgw" /> name="src" value="http://s0.videopress.com/player.swf?v=1.02" /> name="wmode" value="transparent" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="434" src="http://s0.videopress.com/player.swf?v=1.02" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" flashvars="guid=fft9IGgw">

    Since the advent of WordPress 3.0, regular WordPress and WordPress MU has now been merged together.  In other words, if you have upgraded your blog to WordPress 3.0, you have the features of MU built right in.  You just have to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-wordpress-blog-blog-network-wordpress-30/">activate them.

    This is good news for someone who wants to use BuddyPress because they don’t have to download and install WordPress MU.  Check out how easy it is now to install BuddyPress now that we have WordPress 3.0.

    1. Activate Networking Abilities Of WordPress 3.0.

    It’s kind of a mystery to me why the multi-site abilities of WordPress 3.0 are hidden behind a few hacks but they are.  WordPress 3.0 does not act like MU right out of the box.  Check out this article about class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-wordpress-blog-blog-network-wordpress-30/">how to turn your WordPress blog into a blog network using WordPress 3.0.  Do what’s outlined there and you’ll be ready to move on to the next step.

    2. Install The BuddyPress Plugin

    Installing the BuddyPress plugin (it’s actually a group of plugins packed together) is as easy as installing any WordPress plugin.  Just head to the plugins section of the Admin screen and search for Buddypress.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_plugininstall.png" alt="wordpress plugin buddypress" width="546" height="167" />

    Just make sure it is the correct plugin and you’re good to go.

    3. Activate A BuddyPress Compatible WordPress Theme

    After installing the proper plugin, you’ll probably get a message saying: “You’ll need to activate a BuddyPress compatible theme to take advantage of all of the features. We’ve bundled a default theme, but you can always install some other compatible themes or upgrade your existing WordPress theme.”

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_thememessage.png" alt="installing buddypress" width="498" height="99" />

    If you don’t have one downloaded already, click the “install some other compatible themes” link.  For the time being I chose to use the default theme.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_defaulttheme.png" alt="installing buddypress" width="580" height="247" />

    style="text-align: left;">That’s all there really is to setting up BuddyPress on WordPress 3.0.  It’s as easy as enabling networking, installing a plugin and installing a compatible theme.  From here it’s up to you to find a niche and users to use this tool.  Take some time and become familiar with some of the features before you get too many users asking for help.  Check out these features:

    1. Activity Streams – See What Everyone Is Up To

    style="text-align: left;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_activitystream.png" alt="installing buddypress" width="523" height="341" />

    style="text-align: left;">You can view the activity streams of individuals, groups or even the whole site.

    2. Extended Profiles – “About Me” Pages For Users

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_profile.png" alt="buddypress" width="499" height="424" />

    You have control over what fields users can fill in to describe themselves.  They can upload an avatar too.

    3. Private Messaging

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/buddypress_privatemessaging.png" alt="wordpress plugin buddypress" width="327" height="154" />

    Private messaging is like an internal email system.  Send messages to other users that only they can see (image from the  class="vt-p" href="http://buddypress.org/">BuddyPress homepage).

    There’s also other features common to social networking like friend connecting, blogging, and discussion forums.  Check these out at the class="vt-p" href="http://buddypress.org/">BuddyPress homepage.  Also try out the test site by going to class="vt-p" href="http://testbp.org">testbp.org and signing up for an account.

    style="text-align: left;">Is BuddyPress the only way to create your own social networking site?  No.  There are what Damien called “3rd party social network providers.”  Check out class="vt-p" href="http://www.groupsite.com">Groupsite to create a free network without having to handle all of the installation and setting up.  As we know, there are pluses and minuses to both but your needs may dictate which direction you choose to go in.

    style="text-align: left;">Do you run a social networking site?  What do you use to do it?  We want to know.

    Fortify Your Network Control With A Utm And Penetrator Vulnerability Scanning Appliance

    Did you now that your company’s computer network is facing security threats everyday?  Hackers will attempt to infiltrate your network to steal information or disrupt your operation. Pranksters will try to access your wireless network to get free Internet access while spammers will flood your mail servers.  On top of these, there are the usual worms, viruses, and Trojans that will surely harm your entire network and damage your files.  To protect your network from these daily threats, you need to deploy the Protector UTM Anti Spam appliance and Penetrator vulnerability scanning appliance.  These are your best defenses against all network security threats.

    The Protector UTM Anti Spam appliance is a very effective tool against the onslaught of spam, unwanted, and redirected mails.  This hardware is equipped with the latest anti spam technology that can block unwanted mails without filtering legitimate electronic communications.  So even if you do not have a mail server administrator, your corporate email system will still operate at optimum levels.  However, the Protector UTM Anti Spam appliance is not only effective against spam.  It also has the capability to act as an anti-intrusion device that can block viruses, Trojans, and all forms of malicious wares.  With just a single UTM appliance, your network will get multiple protection systems and effectively prevent external attacks and threats.

    In the past, the only solution of companies to protect their networks is to deploy a firewall and implement several adhoc security systems.  In most instances, a firewall is not enough to prevent attacks.  And if you deploy different security systems, you will be forced to deal with several vendors.  This will complicate your network security management and would be costlier also.  That is why you will enjoy superior benefits from an all-in-one Protector UTM Anti Spam appliance.  All major security issues can be handled by a UTM appliance that is why your network will be protected at all times.

    To further fortify network security, the Penetrator vulnerability scanning appliance should also be installed.  Although a UTM device has anti intrusion capability, it is not designed to perform network security audits.  This security audit can only be performed by the Penetrator vulnerability scanning appliance.  This type of appliance is your best defense against hackers.  The vulnerability scanning appliance will identify exposed and weak areas of your network that can be exploited by hackers.  The Penetrator testing appliance can perform automated scanning so you can ensure that all the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of your network can be addressed immediately.  The pen testing appliance can provide vulnerability assessments, reports, and solutions.

    So if you want to fully protect your network from external threats and hacks, then you have to seriously consider deploying UTM and vulnerability scanning devices.  These two security systems work in tandem with each other.  The UTM protects your network systems from spam and viruses while the vulnerability scanner will enable you to prevent illegal hacks.  With these security systems in place, you will be able to keep your network safer and protected.
